Me at the start of the year: Since I keep giving up on going back to write anything (that is not fanfiction) I could at least shorten my "to read" list and the "still not finished" list. Me, now in September: [has even more books to read and to complete than at the start of the year] Me: well, uh- Looks like I failed
#corvo talks#i need to update my lists at this point and see which ones are close to the end and complete at least those#books and reading

No spoilers please. I know this probably won’t happen but it would be funny if something like it did.

I started writing in English as practice, also because I'd have to translate in English what I wrote to share it on here.
Then in a moment of writer's block I started using fanfic to practice both writing and English...
...that now after idk 2-3 years feels weird when I try to write in my native language 😅
I am constantly amazed by people who write stories in anything other than their native language.
#sometimes english feels better#other times there are untranslatable things that make me confused#other times I just don't know how to write in either language lmao#corvo talks

No matter if you play High Chaos or Low Chaos, the one thing that never changes about Corvo Attano is his unwavering love and adoration for Emily.
The player chooses how (if he'll be her sword or her shield, if he'll save her with blood or with mercy) but the fact remains that Emily is his sole motivation and that this rat man is going to protect his daughter with everything he's got to the end.
#dishonored thoughts fueled by my insomnia#idk I just think that's fascinating about him#“you can't have a consistent character out of him because of the variable or the player choices” WRONG he's a dad#we're talking about a man who almost singlehandedly brought an empire to its knees and then rose another one from the ashes#and all of this with the core purpose of making sure his daughter was safe#yes this also applies to dh2#anyway I love these games :D#corvo attano#emily kaldwin#dishonored#dishonored 2

having the player never hear corvo speak or see his reflection was one of the best decisions dh1 made. when your character loses his life's focal point, proceeds to get tortured for six months, and literally undergoes rebirth and apotheosis his existence turns liminal. corvo is real bc the violence (the knife: daud) is, bc the future (emily) is, bc dunwall is. he becomes jessamine's inverse--a body trapped for the empire, with the only power of choice he wields being the ability to inflict the horrors of the system on the people he's replacing in it
#dh1 may not have anti monarchy sentiments or w/e but the way it deals w the complexities of being complicit in such a system is potent#dishonored#daud's only descriptor of corvo being ''dead eyes'' taken w how everyone talking about the outsider refers to him as rhe black eyed bastard#but thats for a different post

didn’t your mother teach you not to play with fire, Corvo?
Daud had successfully dealt with a bunch of street kids turned assassins for years, he can manage one more. By inflicting some nap time on him probably
#dishonored#daud#corvo attano#art tag#drunk Corvo loses his brain-tongue barrier and starts taking shit that would potentially end up backfiring in his face. literally#*talking#Daud…endures#also. first drawing of the 2024?! huh

I hate how imperialism is so indoctrinated in DH1 that there is no option to destroy the Empire and have your happy ever after.
"Oh but Emily could do that and be a great leader of post-imperialistic society!" Yeah but we already have DH2 and we see that Emily isn't really interested in ruling her people at all. She acts only if it's becoming personal.
Besides neither DH2 nor DotO never tries to address her changes in the Empire or give us some real examples. In DotO she just "tries to renovate" the Empire instead of trying to understand why she has to do that and if it's even a good foreign policy to maintain.
"Oh but you can destroy the empire in DH1! You just have to go high chaos and let Emily die!" Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. No one is addressing high chaos as a "good option".
Not to mention the fact that DH1 tries to push you to decide between a chance for colonies to finally get free and death of a royal child. The game simply does not believe in fact that you may hate Dunwall for everything it did to other nations or to your protagonist; it does not believe that you will [at least try to] perceive Corvo as a character with a great inferiority complex because of his nationality, and his story as an example of self-reflection. And therefore it gives you this choice instead of an opportunity to leave the decaying city behind and flee somewhere with only one good person who was ever close to you - Emily.
You *have* to play "a bad route" to do what you think would be the best option and the game's narrative will do its best to make you aware of "how bad" you are.
What am I trying to achieve here? I'm trying to give you [my reader] a different perspective to play this game or to make any fanworks or just a thing to think about. And maybe to give you a chance to listen to the Outsider’s monologue after the game with slightly more understanding of a problem the next time you play.
"It's just as well. The Empire was dying already. Completely rotten. All that was needed was the right man to send it over the edge."
#dishonored#dishonered 2#corvo attano#emily kaldwin#oh and also there is something to be said about loyalists#treavor-not-all-aristocrats-are-bad-pendleton#martin and his cutted replicas about morley and further reduction to just power-hungry overseer#havelock being a part of the fleet when morley insurrection happened#and the fact that admiral serwed the best he could#while samuel is highly dissapointed by his stories from the past at sea#there is just- a lot to unpack and a lot of wasted potential#but i spare this talk for another time#dt (stands for doni talks)

I wonder if Jessamine's passing influenced the way death and mourning is viewed in the Empire
the world is strongly inspired by Victorian and Edwardian society, and one of the most defining aspects of the era, at least for modern people, is the way mourning was perceived at the time.
which, in turn, was influenced by the untimely death of queen Victoria's husband. the period of mourning, the way it is to be expressed, how people should behave and dress - all of this was strongly influenced by the widowhood of queen Victoria.
there are some paralells to it in the Kaldwin Empire, too. the untimely death of empress Jessamine, the high regard in which she is held long after her death, the ceremonies that accompany the anniversary of her passing. the way Emily has to perform, year after year, give a speech and celebrate her dead mother. the way Corvo's "celibacy" is often highlighted, his love for Jessamine and him remaining loyal to her even many years later and never taking another lover- so much of the mourning for the late Empress is celebrated and ceremonialized. I wonder what kind of effect it had on the world as a whole
#dishonored#dh#li.txt#jessamine kaldwin#i just need to talk about this okay#ive spent my afternoon reading up on how all this stuff worked in victorian england#yes i am writing a fanfiction how did you know------#i do not want to drag the way they dress into it since emily as a kid was in white (common mourning clothes for children which ????)#and corvo and jess were always wearing black#so Im guessing theyre just a goth family good for them

We can discuss the possibilities how Corvo told Emily he was her father but this is how the public found out

I was thinking to make a langblr sideblog since lately I'm in a mood to learn languages again... maybe posting stuff could keep me motivated? Idk.
I started thinking to relearn some stuff bc after 11? 12? years of not using it I need to refresh my French bc at work I struggled to speak (i still understand it spoken and written but I can't remember a dang word when i try to speak/write), and I wanted to prepare some phrases & such in German bc for the love of what's unholy it never stuck in my head.
Then I remembered that I went to university for studying Japanese (then I switched to cinema and then dropped bc lack of money) and that I loved to flex a bit with my Latin (but that's rusty af too)... and from there I'm falling into a rabbit hole and idk where to start at this point lmao
#corvo talks#languages#langblr#<- to do or not to do? Who knows#I'd spend the money I was going to put aside for a 'travel fund' lmao
