Back in July after the first Trump assassination attempt, I wrote that there can be no national unity, no burying the hatchet or cooling the rhetoric with people who have been encouraging political violence and pushing assassination prep for years. You can’t smack someone in the face with a hammer and then insist everyone calm down.

Trump’s election victory doesn’t change that. Those in the news media who spent years calling Trump a fascist and comparing him to Hitler, claiming he represents a threat to democracy and that he’ll use his presidential powers to go after his enemies, should not be forgiven. Their lies and nonstop propaganda should not be forgotten. No one should ever take them seriously again. When they try to engage the public square, they should either be ignored entirely or met with a wall of mockery and derision. They are enemies of the American people, whom they openly despise, and there can be no real unity with them no matter what they might say in the future.

Going forward, it should be a mark of shame to be associated with MSNBC, CBS News, and CNN. Same goes for The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, and Politico. All the “prestige” media outlets that perpetrated lies, distortions, and unhinged rhetoric about Trump should lose so much credibility that their reader and viewer bases collapse, advertisers abandon them, and they get broken up and sold off for parts. If Laurene Powell Jobs wants to run a vanity magazine for her own entertainment, fine. But let’s not pretend it’s a serious place where serious journalists work. We all know what it is now.

There is no useful way to categorize generative AI as stealing that doesn't also categorize essentially every creative work ever made as stealing.

Further, there is no way to develop generative AI which does practical things, like translation and protein folding, without developing generative AI which does literally anything else, because protein folding, translation, and making a creative work are functionally the same process from a programming perspective, and programmers tend to like open source things.

These things are pretty well established, but also seem to routinely be ignored. So why? Well, I have some speculation about why people might be wrong on the internet. A number of these things may be true in any individual of course.

They just don't know these things to be true, despite them being true, because they haven't heard them yet.

They have heard them but don't believe them, because it would be convenient if these things were not true (because they also have one of the later reasons too)

It's part of an ideological package deal they picked up somewhere, picking up some components of the ideology means they must pick up the others, and part of the highly online progressive ideological package is "anything made by a programmer that attracts media attention must necessarily be bad"

Everyone wants to be an artist, but they see potential competition. Thus, the competition must be defamed. It is also socially acceptable to lie, exaggerate, or generally wildly speculate about machines, so absurd easily disprovable claims get repeated.

People remember how much fun it was to bully cryptocurrency people, because they were a relatively small community that clearly signposted themselves, skewed ideologically right-libertarian (an extremely rare ideology in the real world and thus a desirable target), and defined themselves around a product that made very little financial sense and was impractical for basically everything (and was made by and for goldbugs but that's beside the point). They then assume, partially because of option 3, that anything that programmers make must necessarily make little financial sense and be impractical for basically everything, even when this is not true, and then assume therefore bullying Generative AI people might also be fun, because "they're basically the same thing"

Having enemies is fun in general, and a decently insulated mid-sized community has decided AI people are an ideologically acceptable enemy to have, so if you're going to have an enemy, why not have them as the enemy?

Valorization of certain forms of labor over others. (why is the corporate artist more important to defend than the auto worker who got automated out of a job earlier?)

Desperation for there to be something humans are better at than a sufficiently well-programmed computer, they already dominate board games and repetitive industrial tasks, and now they're coming for slightly less repetitive tasks, and if we don't have slightly less repetitive tasks, what do we have?

Fear of SEO spam and people using AI to lie on the internet (this is a particularly weird one because we already have SEO spam and it's comically easy to trick people on the internet, and it's doubtful generative AI would make either of these problems worse. I've seen people reblog the most obviously fake things like they're real! Using AI to lie on the internet would be like trying to kill an ant with a nuclear bomb, it might work, but also you could just lie about someone pretty directly or create a fake post that you claim is from an opponent and then mock them for it, and basically no one is going to check it. This particular moral panic is actually recycled from when photoshop was new)

Maybe they just genuinely do want more restrictive copyright law that allows companies to maintain very close control over their IP? I have seen this take in the wild but not so much in my tumblr circles, generally it's something about "fanworks butcher the source material and parodies are often lazy or shallow, therefore IP should be more restrictive to prevent those things from happening."

They don't like generative AI for some other reason (they're an educator and got handed a generated essay and had to grade it, they blame it for contributing to the continued decline in quality of search engines, they dislike how companies keep trying to make A Virtual Assistant Like From The Movies a thing and don't fully remember that this "we're going to make virtual assistants a thing" has been going on since at least Clippy and probably way longer) and then generalize their dislike to every aspect, because one aspect annoys them but they don't feel that's justification enough to be angry about it.

Anyway that's my speculation. Maybe there's other reasons why people keep making incorrect statements too, but I can't think of any that wouldn't be covered by these points right now.

Ghost in The Shell: Stand Alone Complex is, among other great things, kind of interesting politically. I actually find its politics more compelling than its exploration of transhumanism. Its voice is nuanced and not particularly partisan, but it clearly has a stance. [Long effortpost - Mild spoilers hereon!]

Starting at a very high level:

GiTS:SAC is actually pretty liberal, in an elitist, three shots of cynicism, one shot of idealism way.

As in, like, yes, naturally, there's a political and business elite.

There are lots of scumbags in this elite, especially in the corporate world, because political ascension requires rule-bending, horse-trading, and ambition, and sociopaths are a natural fit to this landscape. They work to eliminate all opposition to their preferred world order. What do they want? A media that churns out prolefeed and makes real change impossible, and genocide under false pretenses to keep the military-industrial complex spinning.

These scumbags are a closeknit bunch. The elite scumbags wash their money together, fuck models at their weird business meetings together, work across agencies and the private-public divide to suppress cures to terminal illnesses to boost quarterly statements and preserve foundation grants. Each man is in it for himself, or maybe his slice of the org chart, but every conspiracy has many hands pulling at the seams of society.

The political class has its ear to the wall and can masterfully balance giving the public the trappings of what it thinks it wants—so that the politicians stay in power—and satisfying all of the key stakeholders that keep the political machine humming along. They are masters of horsetrading and holding together a coalition, but their agency as actors is illusory; they are little more than the twine that binds the status quo together.

But very importantly, the elite doesn't just consist of scumbags. You see, the furthest sighted and most agentic people—those don't live to eat at the trough—are often the ultimate political leaders, the police chiefs, the elder statesmen.

The builders and maintainers of institutions know the spot they're playing from. They're used to being among scoundrels and backstabbers. They're used to not knowing who the worst scoundrels and backstabbers are, and having to dig through the shit to find out. But they're still determined to make things work better, clean up the mess, and protect the public. In the end, they'll know records to subpoena. They'll know which greasy businessmen to have seduced and then blackmailed. They'll know where to lay siege in the dawn raids.

Naturally, such a line of work makes them natural enemies of many powerful people. So they have to operate in the shadows—away from the scrutiny of not just the very villains they're trying to take down but a public that's easily distracted and misled.

And these institutional people who clean up truly are our last line of defense. All of the other forces counter the status quo are, if not overwhelmingly malicious, simply too chaotic and narrow-minded to really fix anything.

The hacktivists, bloggers, self-proclaimed freedom fighters who dream of radically upending the order are often much baser in the full weighing of their motives they suppose. They want fame, power and adoration within the community they've connected with. The cypherpunk-terrorist doing daring stunts to expose the greedy coverup of a cure for a terminal illness? He's really just vengeful about his own debilitating disease. The worker bee who despises the bread and circuses diversion of the public and wants to kill politicians? Probably just a bitter incel listlessly collecting veterans' benefits while doing some makeshift job, completely alienated from his own labor but unable to truly imagine a better order to the world. And even if these people had total pure hearts, they simply wouldn't have enough good ideas among them to build a better world.

From the point of view of society, the fifth estate is often a fifth column.

The public does not know its own interest. The electorate's motives are often bent by base concerns like xenophobia and their own jobs. Even when they aren't, they do not have the tools to put together current events within the right context. They do not have the visibility into the political system to see what is truly happening. Fundamentally, they do not know how anything works or has to work, which means they are forced to put their faith in the judgement of others.

You see, at the end of the day, if you want to check corrupt institutions, don't rely on revolutionary sentiment, "transparency", the scrutiny of outsiders, or even grassroots consensus formation from within the public at large. There's only one thing that works: managing power by dividing it. Keep the institutions in an unsteady, adversarial dance. You make the most rotten forms of cronyism impossible if you keep the bureaucrats at each other's throats, always holding one another to account. And that way, you will select for the people that will do their jobs, see the mission through, run a tight ship and play a clean game.

Comparative analysis—more wonky/academic/boring?

This view of politics rhymes with some things I'm familiar with. Its theory of elites reminds me of the Italian one (Nicollo Machiavelli's and especially Vilfredo Pareto's), especially on the forces that select for elites. The view of how society is stratified and the noble lie is very Platonic. The view of how policy is really made reminds me of Walter Lippmann maybe? But idk. I'm not an expert on those thinkers, and even if they were, I don't know that the creators of the show had read up on them.

What other things work this way? Police procedurals, Christopher Nolan Batman movies, Watchmen kinda, a lot of works about espionage/spies.

Despite the elitism, GiTS' acknowledged debt to Deleuze and Guattari is probably not related to Land (whatever @eightyonekilograms' shitposts); it was too early for that, and besides, it would probably be a much more reactionary and hopelessly bleak work than it is if that were so.

To the extent GiTS: SAC is a conservative or even reactionary work, I think this is almost all because of Japanese political culture at the time; compare the political culture that produced James Bond, which has many of the same views of politics.* And GiTS:SAC is a clearly more feminist work than Bond movies.* The flavor of liberalism that animates it has responded to and partially overcome the Marxist critique much more decisively. The bits of xenophobia are almost entirely a Japanese peculiarity...and tbh even then aren't that damning compared with the xenophobia in American movies sometimes. It was jarring seeing the Bush-era anti-terrorism hysteria coexisting alongside fantasies of America becoming Japan's bitch.

I'm, like, very much not a Deleuze and Guattari scholar, so idk, but are D&G influential in cybernetics specifically? Ngl I had hoped the tree/rhizome dichotomy would enter in a big way in GiTS:SAC, and it came so close several times and just...didn't. There's so much stuff about the group vs the collective in modes of being. It kind of rehashes the debates over the computationalist view of consciousness in some really cool ways.

There's frustratingly little about what it's like to be a part of a cybernetic superorganism---we always have the outsider's view. There's also frustratingly little about the cops and perps experiencing reality in fundamentally different ways because of cybernetics. That's a pretty hard storytelling target, but...there was such nutritious soil for this stuff in the show! And the writers just...laid it all fallow! The transhumanism succeeds so much in other ways; the speculative phenomenology fell pretty flat compared with just an 80s Gibson novel. Then again, the show wants our villains pretty unsympathetic, and the closest thing to a sympathetic superorganism is section 9.

*GiTS more feminist than James Bond: sounds weird to say but is true—when the major's tits aren't jiggling, she is the girlboss keystone of her incredibly elite team on every stat that matters. Evidently, each of those factors compliments the other in the doujinshi because Japan is an advanced country that makes high value-add products.

look i dont want to be a dick but first of all, enemy non-combatant is actually a useful term outside of gaza specifically (as that's clearly op's focus). it can, for example, refer to enemy medical personnel or support staff who are unarmed and/or not intended to be involved in combat, like vehicle mechanics.

second of all, the Words About War guide (the link in the ID functions btw) has a section that reads (im paraphrasing) "dont say national interest, say corporate or elite interest. specify who's interests are being served" like elite isnt an extremely common antisemitic dogwhistle when talking about government and especially economics. fucking really? did you even vet this before posting it? or did you not notice?

The greatest rock & roll is the voice of change, and Rage Against the Machine shook the foundations of the status quo – lyrically, sonically, and philosophically. The band mixed hip-hop, punk, metal, funk, and rock in an entirely new way. They took aim at oppressive systems of power – cultural, political, and economic – and set a new standard for how to ignite a revolution through the power of music. 

Formed in 1991, the Los Angeles quartet’s self-titled 1992 debut and 1996’s Evil Empire ushered rap-rock into the mainstream and established Rage Against the Machine as a powerful force that harnessed strength from defying sonic boundaries. Zack de la Rocha’s stinging, hip-hop-inspired vocals drew on his days fronting a hardcore band. The rhythm section of bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk heightened the urgency of de la Rocha’s delivery with deep, heavy grooves grounded by a pummeling backbeat – no rhythm section could maximize volume while staying in the pocket more skillfully. Guitarist Tom Morello took the rap-rock hybridization further than contemporary groups. He used pedals, toggle switches, and alternative tunings to incorporate effects normally created by hip-hop turntables, samplers, and synthesizers into the language of heavy metal through Rage’s driving riffs and iconic solos.     

Rage Against the Machine were part of a musical tradition indebted to the MC5, the Clash, and Public Enemy. While plenty of 1990s rock bands supported social justice issues, Rage Against the Machine’s rebellious politics stood head and shoulders above. Onstage and off, the band members gave a voice to the powerless, calling out local and global inequalities and railing against censorship, corporate cronyism, and government overreach. Their lyrics were smart and pointed; “Freedom” highlighted the plight of Leonard Peltier, an imprisoned Native American leader, while “People of the Sun” showed solidarity with tyrannized Mexican citizens. Even today, their lyrics remain relevant. “Killing in the Name,” a stark indictment of racism and police brutality, still resonates deeply in cities across America. Rage Against the Machine forged brazen protest music for the modern world.

there had never been any issues with heroes. huckleberry had loved heroes as a kid. it was one of the main reasons that when he almost failed out of highschool the marines had been his first place to go. he hadn't been lucky enough to be born a hero but --- maybe he could become one. he remembered dreaming of soldierboy and wanting to be a part of the team. maybe that was why he had grown tired of the rules and regulations in the military. rules of engagement preventing proper justice , the geneva convention removing any possibility of revenge. he had always wanted to become a hero. and so he did , an unauthorized absence and desertion charge later and he was on his way to making history. it started with corrupt politicians , pedophiles , small town heroes taking advantage of underprivileged populations. but one thing leads to another and his criteria for who needs to be killed slowly starts to windle down , anything can be on the list. anyone , for any small crime.

i posted some thoughts about this on mastodon last month

frankly i just think a lot of the discourse on steven universe was and remains shortsighted and childish. a lot of viewers and critics just stubbornly refuse to take the conditions of a production into consideration whatsoever. which, you know, i can understand that as a casual viewer of media, you don’t have that full context you just have the show. but when you get outlandishly vitriolic, as many online critics love to do, a lot of the time you just end up making villains of creators who most likely agree with you on a lot of the stuff you’re criticizing because *the studio forced them to put that shit in and would sue them to hell and back if they admitted to that fact.* i’ll never forget that like three hour “steven universe sucks” video where the critic in question just straight up personally yelled at rebecca sugar over the network’s release schedule, as if she had any control or input on that whatsoever!

at a certain point this level of projected auteurism transitions seamlessly into abject illiteracy. it’s a mode of criticism which treats art as if it emerges from a vacuum, as if artists working within any mainstream media machine have absolute creative control of what makes it onto the air. this critical mode gives endless, endless cover for exploitative censorious media corporations who force talented artists to work under the most untenable of conditions.

why do we care about this? what is it that we really care about? everyone wants the art to be good, but comes at it from an astonishingly naive perspective that corporations absolutely encourage. because if all responsibility for the work falls on the author’s head regardless of how many suits put themselves between the author and the finished work, then the suits just get to keep on doing what they’re doing. this is how we get marvel movies halfway through production before a script has even been written, how we get exploitative minirooms that refuse young screenwriters the long-term career experience of tv writers rooms past, how we get an environment where queer artists pushing boundaries in indie spaces with no financial or institutional support face infinitely more scrutiny with MUCH higher stakes than anything that actually has a real impact on the world at large.

that steven universe exists at all is a miracle. that it’s as queer as it is, and as nuanced as it is about queer family dynamics, mourning, trauma, forgiveness, is something worth celebrating. that doesn’t mean you have to watch it or like it! as cj the x would say, was it bad? or did you just not like it? increasingly i wish everyone watching things would learn to distinguish between the two, and would learn in general that no amount of criticizing mass media will ever ever ever ever result in Things Actually Changing. you want media to get better? then your enemy is the studios, and your allies are the exploited workers who are just as frustrated as you are! putting all that energy into hating A Director or Actor or Property is, most of the time, a gift to the capitalists.

THE GOAL OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY IS DISMANTLE THE REGULATORY AUTHORITIES AND GOVERNMENT THAT STOPS MONOPOLIES AND THINGS OF THAT NATURE AND KEEPS THE CORPORATIONS FROM STEAMROLLING THE PEOPLE. WHEN I SAW ON THE NEWS A WOMAN WHO BELIEVED BECAUSE OF MAGA MEDIA THAT THE GOVERNMENT HAD INTENSIFIED THE STORMS THAT HIT FLORIDA AND THAT REGION WITH SOME KIND OF SPECIAL TECHNOLOGY ON PURPOSE TO HURT THEIR OWN COUNTRY, AND I SAW THAT SHE INDEED REALLY BELIEVED THAT, I KNEW THAT THE CONSPIRACY THEORIES HAD BECOME A FORM OF PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE. THEY'VE ALSO BEEN USING THE CONSPIRACY THEORIES TO MAKE DONALD TRUMP LOOK LIKE A HERO AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT, THE GOVERNMENT AGENCIES THAT PROTECT US ALL IN REALITY, AND STOP THESE CORPORATIONS AND PRIVATE INTERESTS FROM STEAMROLLING EVERYONE, ALONG WITH PROTECTING US IN A MILITARY SENSE ON THE WORLD STAGE.
