Countries led by authoritarian ethnonationalist populists have not handled the pandemic well. Such leaders reject science because scientific thinking represents a threat to the narcissistic alternative universes those leaders create to justify their rule.
Donald Trump made the US “America First” only in terms of COVID-19 infections and deaths.
Far-right Jair Bolsonaro’s willful ignorance arguably eclipses that of Trump. Bolsonaro has let COVID-19 spiral out of control in South America’s largest country.
And now Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi is presiding over a public health disaster in India. Like Trump, he is blatantly holding mass political rallies during his country’s worst spike in infections.
Looking out over a sea of jostling, maskless faces gathered at a political rally in West Bengal on Saturday, the Indian prime minister, Narendra Modi, proudly proclaimed that he had “never ever seen such huge crowds”. A mask was also noticeably absent from Modi’s face.
That same day, India registered a record-breaking 234,000 new coronavirus cases and 1,341 deaths – and the numbers have kept rising since.
The country has descended into a tragedy of unprecedented proportions. Almost 1.6 million cases have been registered in a week, bringing total cases to more than 15 million. In the space of just 12 days, the Covid positivity rate doubled to 17%, while in Delhi it hit 30%. Hospitals across the country have filled to capacity but this time it is predominately the young taking up the beds; in Delhi, 65% of cases are under 40 years old.
[ ... ]
On Saturday, the same day as Modi’s rally, the state registered 7,713 new cases – the highest since the pandemic began. Three candidates running in the election have died from the virus. By Sunday, #ModiMadeDisaster began trending on Twitter.
The fate of Modi’s extremist BJP party in the state of West Bengal is more important than the lives of Indian citizens to him.
Modi has been exporting oxygen when it’s badly needed in India.
Modi Turned India from Vaccine Leader to Beggar: Congress
In fact, people have been dying due to leaky oxygen tanks in India.
Oxygen leak kills 22 patients as India’s daily infection rate nears 300,000
Situations like those in India and Brazil can be corrected when authoritarian populists are obliged to leave power. Since 20 January 2021, Donald Trump’s last day in office, the number of daily American deaths from COVID-19 declined from 4,410 down to 776 on Tuesday – a drop of over 82%.
Even authoritarians cannot resist public dissatisfaction indefinitely. So if you are in India and wish to reverse the country’s decline, DUMP MODI. In the West Bengal elections, vote for parties which can prevent a BJP victory. A vote against the BJP is a vote in favor of better public health.

Quote
Everyone understood the pandemic is a difficult challenge. Most citizens were willing to go to inordinate lengths to support the effort. But we managed to convert the governance of the pandemic into free fall. At the root of this is the culture of perception management that insecure leaderships at the top create. So, rather than acknowledging the depth of the challenge, many states, from Gujarat to Delhi to Bengal, actively mimicked the Central government’s emphasis on managing their image rather than confronting reality. They suppressed testing so that their scorecard looks good. You would have thought that at this point testing would be freely available, and on demand, rather than doled out in rationed doses. Most state leaders, like Vijay Rupani, Mamata Banerjee and Arvind Kejriwal are to blame as much as the prime minister, but they mimicked his (Narendra Modi's) style.

My city just had a category 2 cyclone that left a trail of destruction in its wake. Most of the people don't have water or electricity and it is absolutely impossible to maintain social distancing in this situation.
I don't know how much more we can take.
