I'm looking into getting a purebred cat for the first time because I've developed allergies, and it's such a different world from my niche corner of dog breeding, I'm so lost How common is it for cat breeders to focus on temperament over conformation? I've shown a dog and been to many shows, and am working on a breed in development. I'm uncomfortable with a fixation on "correct" appearance versus a heavy focus on what an animal's quality of life is and what they're like to live with If I'm paying more for a kitten than I charge for a puppy I want to know the breeder has done a lot of handling and enrichment, grooming conditioning (for relevant breeds), and pair their cats for temperament strengths and weaknesses, not just conformation. What should I look for on a breeder site/what should I ask without sounding rude? I also have seen a couple breeders advertise a health guarantee including FIP for one year, and I'm wondering how that's possible. Can you really guarantee against it? I'm so sorry you and your gremlin are going through this, it sounds like a rollercoaster!
it's difficult to answer your first question! cat breeding seems more…..casual in terminology than dog breeding, if that makes sense?
with temperament, there’s a stereotype for each breed (Bengals = active, Siamese = yowly, Ragdolls = angelic beings, etc). breeders often have a page on their site explaining their idea of what the breed is (the ideal appearance, personality, and so on), and then a section with their breeding cats, with blurbs for each one. and they usually also have social media, where you can see how these cats slot into their lives.
if you’re from the states, be VERY WARY of breeders who cage their cats! that’s more of a cultural norm there, and personally, I prefer breeders who treat their animals like family members and live alongside them.
here are two examples of breeders who go above and beyond: Praticalcats and Trillium Devon Rex. their sites give away how obsessive they are about their animals - all the articles on Praticalcats, and all the genetic testing on Trillium - and I would feel comfortable recommending them to anyone who asked.
as for over-emphasis on a “correct” appearance – for each breed, there will be a certain look that’s a red flag. Devon Rexes that are too brachy, Maine Coons that are too large, Siamese that are too spindly, etc. if you do enough research on your breed of choice, you’ll start recognizing it. the cat will look more ‘special’, and more ‘like it’s breed’, but it’s an exaggeration at the cost of other qualities.
for specific questions like what handling they do, whether they’re conditioned to tolerate grooming, and how the cats get paired with buyers, most of the time you have to contact a breeder to ask that. there should be a mini job interview before any money changes hand, where the breeder grills you, and you get to return the favour. if a breeder skips this, I’d consider that a major red flag. and don’t worry about sounding rude, a good breeder will be delighted that you care so much about all of this!
and now, the guarantee against FIP – what are they guaranteeing, exactly? it might be a guarantee that they’ll replace the kitten if they develop FIP (the contract with my breeder had a similar clause). but if they’re guaranteeing that any kitten from them won’t develop FIP, then that’s nonsense. basically all young cats get exposed to the feline coronavirus that causes FIP, and whether they develop it or not is just a lottery gamble. I'd be suspicious of any breeder who claims that their kittens are exempt from this.
anyway, I think I've answered everything. hopefully that was helpful, and not just me rambling!

whenever you have time and energy, please let us hear more of your thoughts on violence under capitalism
Oh, I have the time and the energy, I just didn't want to make the previous ask/answer excessively long!
I think another basic point about both anarchism and communism is that there is violence inherent in capitalism. Capitalism requires the exploitation of the workers by the bosses in order to make profit.
If we take this on a global scale, I think we're all aware of the concept of "sweat shops" in the general, but often we don't consider how unsafe these places are to work. These are factories with no, or very limited regulation- we hear about factory collapses in Bangladesh, where people die in their hundreds. We don't hear about the individuals who are injured or killed every day globally due to unsafe working practices.
Even in the UK, a country that has reasonably good health and safety legislation (of course, legislation is not always followed), in 2018-2019, 147 workers were killed by "accidents at work", as well as 92 members of the public. That's more than 4 people each week. In 2020-21, bearing in mind there were mass lockdowns and many industries stopped working for a period of time, 123 workers, and 80 members of the public were killed. (figures from HSE). These figures do not include deaths from covid-19.
In fact, part of the reason I started this blog during the coronavirus pandemic was because I was aware people were being put in dangerous situations, and covid was being spread more widely because capitalism and profit were being prioritised above people's lives.
The way we are forced to work is killing many people, and injuring huge numbers. In 2021-22, about 150,000 people in the UK sustained an injury at work which meant they were absent for more than 7 days (so potentially quite a serious injury).
Injuries can be caused by unsafe working practices or environments, but equally things like rushing because you are under pressure can lead to a trip or a fall, or people trying to carry things that are too heavy or awkward on their own, and sustaining an injury. The nature of capitalism is that time is money, so we are encourage to work fast, to work when tired, and this can cause people to get hurt.
So that's a little bit about the violence inherent in "work", but what about the violence inherent in the system?
Capitalism kills people- capitalism has always killed people. The nature of the system is that some of us have money and access to all the things we need (food, housing, medication and so on) and some of us don't. People die, or are injured or get ill all the time due to homelessness, even in so-called developed countries. People die due to lack of food, even when there might be food available. People die due to lack of medicine all the time, even in countries where this ought to be freely available, because they cannot afford it.
Whenever people criticise communism, they like to bring up the famine under Stalin. I'm not going to launch into a defense of Stalin, but when we criticise capitalism, we should therefore look at famines caused by it, or contributed to by it. Historically, the potato famine in Ireland, or the Bengal Famine in India (when it was under British rule) are just two examples. We can also look at the ongoing famine in Yemen, and increasing problems in Sudan and the surrounding area.
Many people consider these famines to be solely due to natural causes, "acts of god" if you will. But that's not the case.
If we look at the potato famine, sometimes called an Drochshaol in Gaelic, solely because that's the one I'm most familiar with, we can see that it was caused largely by a capitalist, colonialist system, and the impacts of it were made far more extreme due to capitalism.
People will tell you the potato famine was caused by the potato blight, but it's not as simple as that. There was potato blight across Europe, in the 1840s, leading to about 100,000 deaths across the whole of Europe. In Ireland, more than 1 million people died, and many more emigrated, causing a 20-25% fall in the total population.
Part of the reason for this was the reliance on a single crop. This wasn't a situation chosen by the Irish people. Instead, English landlordism pushed the poorest Irish people into a situation where they had very little land, and the only crop that could sustain them on their land was the potato. Meanwhile, much of the agricultural land was used to grow wheat or other grains, or farm meat, which was solely used for the profit of the landlords.
Arguably the greatest tragedy of the Irish famine was that there was plenty of food in Ireland. It was just all being exported, so that people could make money. And during the famine, people continued to do this, and continued to make money, even whilst people were literally starving in the streets.
And during all of this, the English landlords continued to charge rent. Even before the famine, many families in Ireland could not fully afford their rents, and were supported through relatives working abroad (usually seasonal work in Britain). During the famine, there were a huge number of evictions.
I recently watched a BBC TV show about evictions (because English landlords haven't changed at all) and one of the tenants facing eviction said something along the lines of "eviction is a really violent act"- which I believe is true. And it is even more violent in a situation where your family is starving and everyone around you is starving.
Anyway, my point is that the landlords were able to evict their tenants, in order to make more money, causing even more deaths. And all of this is was fuelled by a capitalist, colonialist system.
And in the last 170 or so years, we can see that on a surface level, things have improved somewhat in some countries. But equally, in England, we still live in a country where someone can evict you for no reason and make you street homeless if *you* can't find another house in time- yes, in some circumstances, "the council" will help house people, but the housing offered is often inadequate or limited for families- and it often doesn't exist for young, single people- so they end up sofa surfing or sleeping on the streets.
In the USA, people still die or end up in extremely difficult situations because they can't afford the medical treatment they need.
I'm sure anyone who lives in a capitalist country can point to some key injustice which leads to death or serious ill health, and is driven solely by profit and the property owning class. This is the violence inherent in the system, and it kills far more people than interpersonal violence ever could.
Again, this has become very long, and there's still more in it that I want to explore, so do keep sending me asks on these themes if you are interested.

Events For Which You Need A Banquet Hall
Banquet halls are in great demand in India these days with the increasing number of social event which require social gatherings to happen within a small space, given the end of the coronavirus pandemic and people getting back to their normal lives and social situations. Marriages which have been delayed are being conducted and so are the engagement ceremonies and receptions.
Business meetings or corporate events are also require banquet halls for proper hosting of the events. Therefore, for business purpose also banquet halls in Siliguri are needed. Many prefer their business events and meetings being held in a close proximity to nature in order to balance out the stress of their work life and relax in the company of nature. This makes Darjeeling, Siliguri, and other locations in North Bengal the topmost choices for such events.
Following are the events that usually call for a banquet hall:
Weddings.
Engagement ceremonies.
Receptions.
Award functions.
Reunions.
Other similar social events.
A banquet hall business, seemingly a profitable one, is however, not easy, if one assumes it to be so. When it comes to management of a banquet hall and event management as whole, there are several factors involved:
Proper decoration of the banquet hall as per the theme of the event.
Supply of the items necessary for the event.
Providing the guests the proper ambiance and items that require the event to be successful.
Providing proper food and water supply to the guests.
Maintenance of proper hygiene throughout the course of the event.
Cleaning up and proper sanitization of the banquet hall after completion of the event.
One big advantage of choosing banquet halls over open spaces is that they provide a secure atmosphere for the guests who are attending the event and rain or minor weather calamities and can be easily avoided. It is now up to the organizers to decide to what extent they can modify the decor of the banquet hall in question and make it align with the theme of the events that usually take place in the hall.
A professional designer can make banquet hall look chic and classy, suited to the theme of events needs that usually take place in the hall. Interior designers who specialize in the same can be hired for this purpose. They truly change the way a banquet hall looks with their works and bring about a complete transformation.
The banquet halls are well decorated with furnitures, including chairs and tables for the guests and flower pots, all of which are available at any top furniture store. The furnishings add on to the the beauty of the banquet hall as a whole, being part of the interior decor. Besides getting proper furnishings, hiring dedicated and qualified staff is very much necessary in order to make the banquet business a successful one. The staff at the banquet halls in Siliguri and North Bengal are excellent at their job, trained with the necessary soft skills. They are obedient, dutiful and cater to all the needs of the guests without fail. This makes these banquet halls in North East in great demand.

The Empowerment of Having a Lab of One’s Own: Research on Cholera, Climate, and Human Health
Tumblr media
Climate and the oceans historically have been closely intertwined with human health. Advances in information technology have brought new discoveries – from outer reaches of space, where satellite remote sensing monitors circle the earth, to next generation sequencing and bioinformatics. Vibrio cholerae is the causative agent of cholera and major pandemics, yet it is an aquatic bacterium distributed globally in estuaries throughout the world, notably the Bay of Bengal and coastal regions globally. Models we developed to understand and predict outbreaks of cholera derive from work done in the Chesapeake Bay and the Bay of Bengal. The models are now used by UNICEF and aid agencies to determine risk of cholera in Yemen and other countries of the African continent. With the onset of COVID-19, the models have been modified to predict COVID-19, the current pandemic of coronavirus.

A fresh instance of the XBB 1.5 strain has apparently been found in Uttarakhand. Before three instances were found in Gujarat, one case each was found in Karnataka, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan.
The XBB.1.5 strain is connected to the Omicron XBB variant, a recombinant of the Omicron BA.2.10.1 and BA.2.75 subvariants. Together, XBB and XBB.1.5 account for 44% of cases in the US.
The XBB 1.5 strain is responsible for the Covid-19 cases in the United States, but the INSACOG data has revealed that nine cases of the BF.7 strain, which is suspected to be responsible for the coronavirus outbreak in China, have been found.
Sub-variant BF of Omicron.
In seven cases—four in West Bengal, two in Gujarat, one in Haryana—there have been seven occurrences found.

There are 2 forms of progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) in cats that we’re aware of, the rdAc variant and the Rdy variant.
The one that’s only been documented in the Abyssinian and Somali is the Rdy variant, which is more severe and causes blindness by 2 months of age.
The rdAc variant is much slower acting and can take years for the cat to become fully blind, but this variant is found in A LOT of breeds. If you click that link it’ll bring you to the UC Davis site which includes a list of breeds which should be tested.
Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) can manifest with ocular symptoms, we don’t know for sure why the feline coronavirus (FCoV) mutates into FIP in some cats and not others but it’s thought that there’s a genetic component partially at play and some breeds seem to be more predisposed to developing it than others.
Ragdolls are one of the breeds with a higher incidence of FIP. The Himalayan, another pointed breed, is also at a higher risk.
Other incidents of ocular disease and vision problems in certain breeds include
Primary glaucoma, which is uncommon in cats but the Burmese and Siamese may be predisposed.
Corneal sequestrum, which the Exotic/Persian breed group and Sphynx are predisposed to.
Entropion, which is the Exotic/Persian breed group and Sphynx are also predisposed to.
Hereditary cataracts have been documented in the Russian Blue and Bengal. Other breeds may also be predisposed.
Are ragdolls (specifically seal pointed) prone to blindness or vision problems and is this related to their blue eyes?
My friend asked me and after some research all I could find is that some DBE genes are linked with missing tear ducts, but not blindness.
What are some genetic causes of blindness in cats?
Thank you!!
(here is a cat pic as tax, my partner’s smoky tabby Master Chief)
Tumblr media
Please, i'm just a color genetics blog, i don't really know about health-related things 😿 But i'll try to answer I well as I can.
All pointed colors, including seal point, are associated with eye problems like strabismus (crossed eyes) and nystagmus (involuntary eye movements), and i've read these cats can have poor spatial vision, but i've never heard about blindness.
The only breed i found specifically mentioned as at risk of developing blindness is Abyssinian/Somali; there is a genetic disease called progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) that's more common among them. But this is unrelated to their coat and eye color.
The eye problems of ragdolls is indeed related to their blue eyes, but only because both are parts of the pointed phenotype: so strabismus and nystagmus isn't associated with blue eyes, it's associated with pointed cats (and pointed cats have blue eyes). As far as I know, neither full white with blue eyes, nor dominant blue eyed cats are more prone to these conditions.
Some (potentially) genetic causes of blindness in cats i could find:
Glaucoma in some cases
Retinal detachment
Progressive retinal atrophy
None of them are related to coat or eye color; and of course neither are the non-genetic causes like trauma or infection.
Here is an overview about the topic
Thank you for the kitty! The tabby stripes are actually the ghost pattern of the smoke color: this is a genetically solid cat.
