ABS-CBN SHUT DOWN IS EQUATED TO THE DOWNFALL OF THE FILIPINO’S RIGHT TO BE INFORMED

Today, May 5, 2020 Tuesday marks the end of the most widely viewed TV Channel in the Philippines, the no. 1 Filipino Channel, ABS-CBN! The TV network was created in 1953, since then it really touched lives of many Filipino people not only who works for ABS-CBN, but let us say, all the Filipinos both within and outside the Philippines.  Well it is fair to include all those Filipinos at heart ;)

But despite the service that this network brought us---time lead it to its dead end. The worst part, it happened while the whole world is battling with the Corona Virus Pandemic. Where millions of Filipino people crave for everyday news on what is the true state of our beloved motherland. This event brought tears, anger and hatred towards the Philippine Government who robbed all the Filipinos the right to be well informed of what is happening in every corner of the Philippines, it was the only source of reliable information for majority of Filipinos.

Imagine all the shitty-ass move that the Administration is doing, all the in-transparencies that’s been going, and all the injustices that’s currently happening---all these will never be known by Filipinos without ABS-CBN. You might think there are different tv networks out there aside from ABS-CBN, there’s GMA, TV5 etc. But I will stand firm on my ground and will claim with pride that ABS-CBN is nothing like GMA or TV5. ABS-CBN makes each and every Filipino feel served and be treated as one.

ABS-CBN’s journey will never end today, it will rise up again as Filipinos stand up with them through this battle.

"A lot of people don’t seem to understand why the crackdown on ABS-CBN and Rappler is such a big deal, so let me say it in simple terms, and through events that you’ll understand.

Let me start with something related to the virus: In 1918, no newspaper wanted to publish a story about the flu pandemic that is infecting millions and killing thousands of people worldwide. The press was silenced because the war was on going. Except for one newspaper in Spain (who was neutral at that time). That’s why the flu was called Spanish Flu. The world became aware of how violent the virus was and, while millions were still killed by the virus, millions were also saved.

In 2001, ERAP was ousted after the media published stories of his corruption, saving our economy from further degradation.

In June of 2005, Samuel Ong (director of NBI), said in a PRESS conference that he possessed recordings of Gloria Arroyo asking Garci (COMELEC Commissioner) to rig the elections. GMA owned up to it and apologized in public.

In 2010, the media covered the hostage taking in Quirino Grandstand LIVE. 9 people were killed, and it exposed the incompetence of the Aquino administration in handling a crisis. (See also: building traffic in Metro Manila, Yolanda, etc.)

In 2012, Chief Justice Corona was impeached because of his grave abuse of the constitution. The stories and instances of his corruption were also covered by the media.

In 2013, the underbelly of the corrupt system in the government through the pork-barrel scam (remember Napoles?) was widely covered. There, we learned about the many officials who are liable in stealing people’s money.

In 2015, Mary Jane Veloso was saved from execution after Filipinos appealed to the Indonesian government. How did we learn about her? Because the press picked the case apart FOR US.

And of course: we learn about the casualties of Duterte’s drug war as well as his complacency towards China’s occupation of our territory over the last 4 years.

I can go on and on and on. The press has existed for centuries. Even pre-historic Filipinos have a version of media and press. Their role, as it turns out, is not just to inform us—that would be the most basic part of it.

The information they provide is for bigger things. It’s information that can save the country from corrupt officials. It’s information that can empower even the poorest of the poor. It’s information that can save lives from a typhoon or a crisis or from a deadly virus. So this is about you in as much as this is about press freedom. It should concern you because losing free press means losing the power to have access to these information.

Their role is to be the catalyst for progress: in politics, economics, public health, our freedom, and for the welfare of millions of Filipinos worldwide.

Their role is to curate the stories that YOU have to know, so that you can react accordingly. So that you know what to demand. So that you know who to hold accountable for ruining our country. So you know who to be grateful for, who to be angry at, who to question, and what questions to ask.

A country without free press is a country walking blindly. We’ll be stagnant without them. They are doing the thankless job, in front of bullets and raging angry voices, earning menial salaries and missing birthdays and anniversaries so they can tell stories for us. I don’t know what else to say to convince everyone that as much as the media may need us for their audience and traffic, we need them more to have, at the very least, a decent life."

For me no one needs to be pro-ABSCBN or pro-Rappler to be bothered by what is happening lately, but this silencing the media / limiting press freedom in general regardless kung anong network sila or news source is really alarming. See what our outcries did sa mga past administration sa info na binibigay nila diba. I can't thank people enough who are so willing to speak up for the truth and what is just and stand in the front lines to cry out against this corrupt governance. Saludo ako sa mga nagpprotest para sa karapatan ng lahat. Like who are we to be defended by such people that even the silent and even yung mga taong tinatawanan or kinocomdemn and against sa ginagawa nila, nadedefend nila kahit hindi nila nakikita yon. May nakita akong signage sa Grand Mañanita where parang yung thought is "I can't believe I'm doing this in a pandemic". Tignan nyo kung gano kagahaman and kaselfish ibang tao diba. Nagagawa nila tayong pagtaksilan sa pandemyang ito, lalo na't sila pa ang higit sa kanino man ang may awtoridad. Hindi ako politikal na tao pero to not speak up sa ganito for me is a disgrace. At kung hindi ka galit sa nangyayari, matakot ka man lang kung ano yung future na kakaharapin natin at maging ng mga susunod na henerasyon sa atin. Kahit man lang makwento ko pag matanda na ko na hindi man ako ganoon kaingay about dito, kahit minsan man lang nakapagvoice out ako na nasa side ako ng mga lumalaban para sa tunay na kasarinlan ng Pilipinas. Di mo naman kailangan maging bayani, siguro enough na yung may boses ka sa mga nangyayari.
