2020 / 46
Aperçu of the week:
You can fool all the people some of the time and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time (Abraham Lincoln). Right!
Bad news of the week:
The presidential elections in the USA reveal a lot of ambivalent aspects. Okay, Joe Biden won in the end, but more than 70 million Americans voted for Donald Trump - and none of them can claim not to know what they were doing. In 2016, the whole world had the hope that the office was more powerful than the man. And the Trump election was somehow a clumsy misunderstanding, a kind of accident. With this year's election a clear statement was made. And not a good one.
The following conclusions, among others, seem to suggest themselves: White people fear their loss of social significance. Statistics show that they will already be in the minority by the middle of this century - because today's minorities, especially Latinos, will then be in the majority. So a Trump voter could claim that he or she merely wants to defend the status quo ("Our America!") against all these strange progressive trends of change ("Good old times!").
Red states are and remain red, blue states are blue, and swing states are clearly divided: cities blue, rural areas red. Even candidates with exotic bonuses (not only Trump for the Republicans, but also Obama and Hillary Clinton for the Democrats) are changing something about the blanket party fixes that dominate most U.S. states: New England and the Pacific Coast are Democratic, the Midwest is Republican, the Great Lakes and Florida are battlegrounds. Party programs, specific personnel or campaign content hardly count. One only wants to reassure oneself briefly whether the basics are still right and then succumbs to one's reflexes. Even a tweet is enough for that.
With his reaction to the count, Trump has not only proven that he was wrongly appointed to office, but has also damaged democracy in the USA - probably permanently. In addition, the defeated campaign is threatening with a week-long hangover due to legal measures, which will ultimately prove to be untenable, but will nevertheless spread uncertainty. Moreover, the Trump administration will hardly lift a finger in day-to-day politics until its successor takes office. Nor can it be assumed that there will be a constructive transition that would make it easier for the Biden government to get off to a good start. This is bad, because at the moment every day counts in the USA, like almost everywhere else in the world.
Tuesday was not only about the posts of president and vice president. Most of Congress was also on the ballot papers: the entire House of Representatives as well as a third of the Senate will be filled by new (or old) candidates. Currently, fundamental changes seem rather unlikely; the House will probably remain barely democratic, the Senate barely republican. This is bad, because without a majority in the Senate, Biden has hardly any chance to govern significantly. All that would remain would be more or less symbolic politics. And that is not enough to "heal the national soul", nor to neutralize the national and international impact of the policies of the last four years. So hope for the Midterm Elections. It is just as unfortunate which personnel is now in power. Not only have proven dishonest tacticians without a moral compass such as Mitch McConnell or Lindsey Graham been re-elected, but many newcomers also makes one shiver: Several Republican candidates had spread conspiracy theories of QAnon during the election campaign. Now at least one candidate, Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia, has actually been elected.
So: not everything will be "all right" overnight - most problems were already increasingly noticeable before Trump and will continue to dominate the political agenda after Trump.
Good news of the week:
The (at least European) expectations of the US presidential elections were clear: Trump will be voted out of office, "the adults" will take the helm again. "A re-election of the incumbent would therefore (have been) a fatal signal. Not least because an election victory would call into question one of the great strengths of Western democracy as a form of government: its ability to correct itself (Der Spiegel)". That has now worked.
Many other aspects have also worked: More US citizens participated in the election than ever before. The basis of any democracy, the participation of the people, was heavily emphasized.
With Biden, an upright democrat has won. Harris is the first female vice president, and her parents are from India and Jamaica. The two highest representatives of the people therefore represent the people better than ever before.
Not only the "Popular vote", but also the majority of the electoral votes in Electoral College were won by Biden/Harris. So this time this fundamentally undemocratic electoral system did not lead to the victory of the loser, as in 2000 and 2016.
The election winners are proven political professionals and not newcomers, as was the case with Trump (not to mention his family and companions). Biden was more than just a backbencher in the Senate for 36 years and was also vice president for 8 years. Kamala Harris was Attorney General in California prior to her election to the senate in 2016, a highly operational position combining the head of the state law enforcement agency and duties of a Secretary of Justice.
The elections ran largely smoothly. No court-appealable chaos at the polling stations, no civil-war-like riots in the streets, no voter oppression through legal tricks or threatening from self-appointed "election watchdogs". The counting process in all states also worked or is working smoothly, despite all Republicans' prophecies of doom regarding the mail-in ballots. No problems worth mentioning were reported, the transparency sets new standards, for example with webcams. The challenges in court announced by Trump are therefore likely to be lost in the void.
The media coverage was objective and factual. Even Fox News paid more attention to facts than to Trump's increasingly desperate tweets and, for example, assigned Arizona to the Democratic camp days before CNN. The fourth power in the state was and is largely fulfilling its role.
So: not everything will be "right again" overnight - the tasks are enormous, but the new team will be able to cope with them much better than the old one.
Sense of achievement of the week:
I didn't write about the corona epidemic today. And regarding the overwhelming dominance of this topic, this is remarkable - even an achievement. But there is a joke lately that sums the news of this year up quite significantly: In the year 2050 two historians meet. Asks the first one: "So what's your main focus in history?" The second one answers: "Middle age. And yours?" "The year 2020." "Ah - which week?"

Mother of San Bernardino Jihadi - Who Killed 14 - Agrees to Plead Guilty to Destroying Evidence Related to Her Son’s 2015 Terrorist Attack
Rafia Sultana Shareef’s plea agreement will allow her to serve no more than 18 months of a 20-year sentence.
RIVERSIDE, California – The mother of Syed Rizwan Farook, the male shooter in 2015 San Bernardino terrorist attack, has agreed to plead guilty to a federal criminal charge of intending to impede a federal criminal investigation by shredding a map her son generated in connection with the attack.
Rafia Sultana Shareef, a.k.a. Rafia Farook, 66, of Corona, has agreed to plead guilty to a one-count information charging her with alteration, destruction, and mutilation of records. The criminal information and related plea agreement were filed Monday in United States District Court in Riverside, and the documents became publicly available today.
Shareef is scheduled to make her initial appearance in federal court in Riverside on March 16.
According to her plea agreement, on December 2, 2015, Shareef was living at a Redlands residence she shared with her son and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, and her grandchild. At approximately 8 a.m. on that day, Farook and Malik left the family home and left their infant child with Shareef, falsely telling her that they were going to a medical appointment.
Instead, Farook and Malik drove a black SUV that Farook had rented a few days earlier to the Inland Regional Center (IRC) in San Bernardino. Farook entered the IRC alone, while Malik waited inside the SUV, which was parked at the IRC parking lot. Farook placed a bag containing a bomb in a conference room where his coworkers were holding an event. After some time, Farook and Malik left the IRC, then returned at approximately 10:58 a.m. dressed in black tactical gear.
Approaching the IRC on foot from the exterior, Farook and Malik opened fire using high-powered firearms on individuals outside and inside the venue, killing 14 people and wounding at least 22 others. At approximately 11:01 a.m., Farook and Malik departed the IRC and began driving around San Bernardino. A few hours later, Farook and Malik engaged in a firefight with law enforcement officers that resulted in the wounding of one policeman and their own deaths.
Sometime between 11:43 a.m. and 3:06 p.m., while Shareef was still at her home, she learned that law enforcement had identified her son as a suspect in the IRC attack, the plea agreement states. In the presence of family members that afternoon, Shareef expressed her belief that her son and daughter-in-law had perpetrated the IRC attack, according to the plea agreement.
Prior to leaving the family home with her infant grandchild at 3:41 p.m., Shareef went into her son’s bedroom, grabbed at least one document that appeared to be a map, and fed it into a shredder, according to the plea agreement. Shareef admitted that she knew her son had produced the document, and she believed it was directly related to his planning of the IRC attack.
Once she pleads guilty to the felony charge, Shareef will face a maximum statutory sentence of 20 years in federal prison, but the plea agreement contemplates a sentence of no more than 18 months.
This matter was investigated by the FBI. This case stems from the broader investigation of the San Bernardino attack by members of the Inland Empire Joint Terrorism Task Force, which includes the FBI; the San Bernardino Police Department; the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; Homeland Security Investigations; the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department; the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office; the Chino Police Department; the Redlands Police Department; the Ontario Police Department; the Corona Police Department; and the Riverside Police Department.
The case against Shareef is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Christopher D. Grigg, Chief of the Terrorism and Export Crimes Section; Melanie Sartoris of the General Crimes Section; and Julius J. Nam of the Criminal Appeals Section. Justice Department Trial Attorneys Alicia Cook and C. Alexandria Bogle of the National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section provided substantial support.

THE TRUTH!!!
I have been pondering this for a while and finally have peace about what I am about to say. First for those of you out there who do not believe in some form of a higher power, here is one of several truths I will reveal to you. We did not evolve from monkeys or apes, and there was not a huge meteor that crashed into the earth, and then humans started forming out of a big rock. There is a GOD and there is a devil.
The evil one was cast down from GOD to this earth to have full reign until the final battle when the evil one is defeated (which he already knows his fate). The reason he was cast down is because he wanted to be GOD, therefore GOD kicked him down to this earth and gave him freedom until his final defeat.
I ask myself frequently why GOD didn’t come during the horrific days of Hitler of Stalin, Only GOD knows the time he will return to defeat the evil one.
As you can see the evil one is very much alive and doing his best to take as many souls with him into the lake of fire with him at his final end. He also has little helpers he sends up through the portholes of hell instructing them on what to do, and who to attack.
What is going on right now with THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is sad, and so demonic it makes me cry. Watching people killing children, cops, and one another, looting and, the anarchy, tyranny, unrest, and destruction of our beautiful cities and on and on is so distressing that the evil one is so very happy right now and laughing at this. It’s like a robber in a bank vault knowing he is getting ready to become filthy rich and knows he is going to get away with it, for only a short season though. Now onto political jargon.
Trump? Well he does not have the best etiquette or demeanor, nor does he put a filter on his words quite often BUT, let me just list a few things he has done for our country.
1.Before the Corona Virus we had the best economy since Ronald Reagan was in office
2.Unemployment rate was below 4%, the lowest it has been in US history
3.He has started to drain the evil swamp in Washington
4.He is protecting our religious liberties
5.Before the virus we had more jobs available then there are unemployed people
6.For the first time in 50 years we are energy independent
7.He has reinvigorated the manufacturing industry along with the coal industry and the offshore drilling industry.
8.He is securing out borders
9.He has strengthened our military
10.He destroyed ISIS
11.He has appointed 193 conservative judges
12.He has replaced two supreme court judges with two conservative supreme court judges
13.He has lowered prescription drug prices
14.He has succeeded in bringing peace with Israel and Saudi Arabia WHICH IS HUGE!!
There is so much more that can be listed!
Since he came into office, from the moment, he started he has had one attack after another (hence the evil one and his followers)
Blaming him for the Corona Virus (WHAT?) do you seriously think he made this virus in a petri dish and started spreading it all on his own? If you do then you are STUPID! On January 21, 2020 he put a travel ban on China he gave idiot Cuomo the hospital ships, and the makeshift hospitals with PPE, ventilators, and everything that Cuomo asked for then never used. What did Cuomo do? He put Covid patients into nursing homes killing thousands of poor souls.
The radical left tried to impeach him for Russian Collusion which was proven false.
He had a 16-minute conversation with the newly elected president of Ukraine which the democrats said that he asked Ukraine to rig the 2020 election to keep him in office. The White House publicly released the transcript of the conversation which was completely harmless. Radical left proven wrong again.
The fake news media has attacked him from the very start, even before he was elected.
The Clintons who are murderers OMG (go on your Instagram and download the app IGTV open the app and type in wake up 2 truth) VERY DISTURBING BUT JUST SO TRUE AND ANOTHER EVIL PLOY OF THE devil. I think every adult should watch this!!
I can go on and on and I will write more later. But I leave with this important note:
If you want socialism/communism to be our new way of life, if you want people camping out in your front yard and defecating on your lawn, if you want the government to control your wages, your taxes raised, your 401k and your insurance controlled and taken away only to have the government control it, if you want them to continue killing our children elders and total and utter evil roaming our streets every night. If you want your guns confiscated and marshal law to be implemented, cancel culture to continue being in fear for your family and loved ones every day and every night and our beautiful country turning into poor Venezuela then by all means vote for poor lost memory in space Joe Biden. You will get Comala Harris to be our first female president (purposely spelled her name wrong). She wants your guns, abortions even after delivery making the baby comfortable while being put down, and free Medicare for all illegal immigrants. When she was the attorney general for California she had many cases brought to her, Catholic Clergy Men that sexually abused minors, for which she did not prosecute one NOT ONE, because the Catholic church funded 60.000 dollars towards her campaign and to keep her quiet. OMG so much more, if you want all of this then by all means BE STUPID AND VOTE FOR EVIL!!!

Very long today to catch up.
Corona news:
Total cases are ~9M, total deaths are ~470K. The WHO reported the highest amount of cases in one day today.
12 states have hit their new daily case record, with Arizona, California, Florida, and Texas in particular affected.
Trump had his first rally after the virus started in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Someone took him to court to stop it from happening, but a court ruled it was fine. 6 staffers later tested positive for the virus, and attendees had to sign waivers if they got sick. The rally had an underwhelming turnout and did not fill up the venue.
A study on the effects of dexamethasone, an inexpensive steroid, showed it helped survival rates in critically sick patients.
An additional 1.5 workers filed for unemployment last week.
Apparently some nursing homes are just jettisoning some of their residents so they can accept more lucrative COVID patients. Like, people with Alzheimer's are wandering the streets type of situations.
NYC is entering stage 2 of reopening tomorrow.
BLM news:
The Minnesota legislature could not compromise on law-enforcement reform and it collapsed before the special session ended. The governor could of course call them back later to try again.
Inside the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone in Seattle, where no police are allowed, there was a shooting that killed one and critically injured another.
One officer was charged in the killing of Rayshard Brooks, the man who was killed during an arrest in Atlanta.
Louisville is moving to fire one of the officers who killed Breonna Taylor. According to Taylor's family, police executed a no-knock search warrant without identifying themselves, so her boyfriend started shooting at what they thought was a home invasion. The police started shooting back, hitting Taylor eight times and killing her.
Pepsi is dropping its Aunt Jemima brand.
Other news:
On Friday night Attorney General William Barr announced he would replace federal prosecutor Geoffrey Berman, who refused to leave his post, so Trump fired him. Berman oversaw many cases that upset Trump, such as the arrest of Michael Cohen and opening an inquiry into Giuliani.
At least 20 Indian soldiers died in a brawl with Chinese soldiers at the border. This, and the previous encounter, was not a shootout but rather people fighting each other with bats and rocks. Supposedly Chinese soldiers were killed as well, but the Chinese government won't say anything. An additional 10 Indian soldiers were captured and later returned.
The Supreme Court ruled that Trump cannot proceed with ending DACA. It said it has no opinion as to whether DACA is legal, but that the White House did not provide adequate justification to end it.
Tens of thousands marched in Mali, demanding President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita resign. Mali has been suffering from a somewhat civil war due to al Qaeda and ISIS jihadism, and many ordinary citizens are tired of the government being unable to stop it.
John Bolton, former US national security adviser, is releasing a book heavily criticizing Trump. The administration tried to stop it from being published, but the court said it was allowed.
A man named Khairi Saadallah stabbed and killed three people in a park in the UK. It is being treated as a terrorist attack.
A mob of hundreds in Germany attacked police and destroyed store displays. It started after police started a drug search on a youth and people fought against the police until it turned into a riot. I've read several English and German papers trying to figure out why this happened and every source is very vague, but seems that people were partying and looking for a fight. Post-isolation euphoria?
There was a rare solar eclipse today in the Middle East and Asia called the "ring of fire," which allows a small ring around the moon.

The Moore Family Law Group
The Moore Family Law Group
The Moore Family Law Group believe that for family law concerns, you deserve the finest legal counsel possible. That is why, throughout the years, they have created a reputation for success and competence.
Divorce
One of the practice areas covered by Moore Family Law Group is divorce.
Divorce, like losing a loved one, can be a very traumatic moment in one's life. It's an emotionally charged moment, with feelings of rage, overwhelm, despair, and frustration looming. Divorce involves emotional suffering. Many people face the prospect of losing part of their possessions. They will have less time with their children, lose some of their income, and have to modify their lifestyle.
While divorce is not uncommon, going through one oneself is never easy. Even if you are splitting up on amicable terms, it is still advised that you employ a qualified divorce attorney.
At Moore Family Law Group, we are committed to safeguarding everything you have worked so hard for over the years, as well as your mental and emotional well-being.
California was the first state to implement the notion of "no-fault divorce." In California, a dissolution of marriage can be granted if the court determines that "irreconcilable disagreements" have resulted in the marriage's irreversible breakup. This means that a married individual who wishes to end the marriage may do so, even if the other spouse wishes to remain together.
In order to seek a divorce in California, at least one spouse must have lived in the state for at least six months prior to submitting the divorce petition.
You must also have lived in the county where you want to submit your divorce petition for at least three months prior to filing.
You must wait at least six months after filing the divorce petition and serving it on your husband for your divorce to be completed.
You may be eligible for a summary divorce if you have been married for less than five years, have no children, do not own real estate, and have very modest property and obligations.
This is a simplified procedure that rarely includes appearing before a court. You and your spouse must draft an agreement outlining how you will split your property and debts and file it with the court, along with a joint divorce petition and other needed papers.
Although you must still wait six months for your divorce to be completed, you do not have to go through many of the processes and appearances that are necessary for a standard divorce.
If you are confronting a divorce in California, and you are looking for a divorce attorney, approach The Moore Law Firm.

Michael Joseph Callahan, the 39-year-old Winchester resident who was convicted of second-degree murder after running over a California Highway Patrol sergeant in Lake Elsinore in 2019, was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison on Friday, Oct. 1,
The sentence by Riverside County Superior Court Judge Timothy F. Freer is the maximum under the law.
Callahan tearfully apologized to Steve Licon, the officer he killed, and his family, in the French Valley courtroom.
“I hope you find forgiveness in your hearts. I’m deeply sorry for the accident I caused. I know with prayers and the Lord’s guidance I will be able to honor Steve Licon,” he said.
On April 6, 2019, Callahan followed his overnight shift at the Costco in Rancho Cucamonga with a trip to Big Al’s sports bar in Ontario, where he consumed almost four 22-ounce beers with high alcohol content and three shots of tequila, prosecutors said. Co-workers who joined Callahan at the bar and witnessed his erratic behavior begged him to let someone drive him home, but he attempted the 50-mile trip himself.
At the same time, Licon, 53, was patrolling the 15 Freeway in Lake Elsinore on his motorcycle. Visitors had crowded the area to view the poppy bloom. Licon was off his bike on the right shoulder writing a speeding ticket at 4:25 p.m. when Callahan plowed into him at 65 mph, prosecutors said. Licon was pronounced dead at Inland Valley Medical Center.
Prosecutors filed the murder charge after learning that Callahan had been convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol in Orange County in 2004. Case law allowed such a charge under the implied-malice theory that Callahan, whose sentence in OC included attending Mothers Against Drunk Driving meetings, had long understood the dangers of impaired driving.
Defense attorney Kerry Armstrong argued that Callahan was “exhausted” after leaving work and that his bizarre actions that day, which including inappropriate hugging of co-workers and stealing food off strangers’ plates — indicated that he was not thinking rationally enough in the moment to recognize that his impaired driving would endanger others.
The jury convicted Callahan on Aug. 27 after about six days of deliberations.
At Friday’s hearing, Licon’s wife Ann described seeing her husband’s body covered by an American flag in the hospital. “The shock that he will never be coming home was too much to bear. … He was my heart, my better half and my best friend.”
This is a developing story. Please check back for more.

Issues Around Child Custody During Coronavirus
By Jordan Wappler, Fordham University Class of 2022
June 5, 2020
Child custody battles can already be heated, intense and life-changing for those involved, and the current pandemic only adds to complications. With days on end of families being unnaturally confined in close quarters, there is speculation that divorce rates will increase. We might see more custody battles emerge in the next few months, but there are challenges with past and current ones as well.
Quarantine, shelter-in-place orders, various regional lockdowns and health concerns make agreed custody schedules a source of argument for parents and sometimes just no longer feasible. When mediation is possible, it is ideal. In amicable relationships, couples can sometimes work out an agreement and adjust a previous custody schedule. For example, if a child is supposed to spend half of their time with one parent and half with the other, but one parent is, say, a nurse working the frontlines of corona, that couple might choose to have the child stay with the non-essential-work parent for the time being. However, in more hostile relationships where parents are estranged, a self-made decision may not be possible, and an attorney will be needed. According to a CNN article, “The biggest obstacle for divorced parents during the coronavirus pandemic is legal” (CNN). Most county and state family courts are closed due to the pandemic, and only open for emergency situations like abuse or child endangerment (CNN).
Since this is unprecedented territory, there is no specific standard of how to deal with the situation. Some courts have delivered administrative orders that address custody issues during corona virus. This means that different states are taking different stances on how to proceed with custody issues in this time. Some states, for example, require parents to adhere to existing agreements, while others, in contrast, allow for alterations but require parents to document the changes. Other states provide little or no guidance.
In Texas, the state Supreme Court issued an emergency ruling that “indicated parents should follow current custody orders pursuant to the schedule that was in place before the shutdown. The order also stipulated that stay-at-home provisions of specific counties or cities do not override the possession schedule” (CNN). Many states have left the guidelines vague. John Casey, chief justice of probate and family court in Massachusetts, issued an open letter saying that “both parents should cooperate” (CNN), suggesting that if custody is altered, parents should collaborate by giving children a chance to video conference or telephone the other parent (NY Times). In California, the San Francisco Superior Court Unified Family Court issued a Notice of Emergency Family Court Operations that stated that “ex parte requests to change child custody or visitation orders will not be granted absent a very strong factual showing of imminent danger or severe detriment to the child” (sfsuperiorcourt.org). In Connecticut, due to unclear interpretation of divorce law given current events, attorneys have advised clients to record any temporary changes to original custody agreements in writing and save hard copies of correspondence about the agreement and changes (CNN). In Davidson County Tennessee, the state district court said that the primary residential parent should take custody of the child within four hours of a shelter-in-place order and retain that sole custody until the order is lifted (Nolo).
One challenge faced by some parents is that they have to weigh the cost and benefit of fighting their spouse to change custody. For example, there are relationships where one parent might feel that the custody arrangement should be altered given current circumstances (perhaps one parent has a new partner that is not social distancing and could infect the child, etc.) but the other parent does not agree. Although the concerned parent might feel they should fight for their children’s safety, there might be future legal consequences. Marcia Zug, a law professor at University of Southern Carolina, believes that judges may cut visitation and limit custody for parents that interfere with an ex’s custody (CNN). Zug explained that normally courts do not rule in favor of a parent that violates a custody or visitation agreement, and that unless courts change the approach to such situations because of the pandemic, under the usual framework interference with custody agreements would not be found justifiable (CNN, Zug). For those who vehemently believe their child’s health is at risk because of their custody arrangement, they can ask a judge to intervene or have an attorney try to obtain an emergency temporary child custody order from a local family court (Nolo). However, when parents do look to the courts for help, they are receiving various responses, with some courts being mostly closed, others holding hearings online, and each jurisdiction having their own definition of what exactly constitutes an ‘emergency’ during a pandemic (NY Times). Regions and states start to venture into various phases of re-opening, but if a second wave of the virus hits as predicated, this problem of custody during a pandemic might return.
Most can probably agree with Justice Sunshine, family court judge in New York and Statewide Coordinating Judge for Matrimonial Cases, who said“I hope over the next few years children will be telling me how positively their parents behaved to make sure they were safe, allowed access by technology if illness or the risks of travel prevented access, and that both of their parents put their differences aside and they did it for me" (jdsupra, Justice Jeffrey Sunshine) .

Found shackled and emaciated, children of torture suspects are freed
(CNN)David and Louise Turpin projected an image of a picture-perfect family on social media.
They posted photos of themselves with their 13 children, smiling as they celebrated birthdays, renewed wedding vows and visited Disneyland together.
In the photos, the couple's children wore identical clothing based on gender and often had the same haircuts.
"They all dressed alike when they went out," Betty Turpin, David's mother, told CNN. The couple would line the children up according to age, she said, and the parents took their positions at the front and back of the line, for "protective reasons."
"It was easier to keep up with the kids" that way, their grandmother said. "They were very protective of the kids."
David, 56, and Louise, 49, are accused of holding their children captive in their Perris, California, home in filthy conditions, some of them shackled to beds with chains and padlocks. The 13 siblings range in age from 2 to 29.
The parents are charged with torture and child endangerment, and scheduled for a court hearing Thursday. Bail was set at $9 million each. It was not immediately clear if the suspects had attorneys or whether they had entered a plea.
On Sunday, one of their daughters, a 17-year-old, managed to escape from their home by climbing out a window and called 911 from a deactivated cell phone she found in the house, police said. She told officers her parents were holding her 12 siblings captive inside the home, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department said.
The teenager had photos to support her story, Riverside County Sheriff's Capt. Greg Fellows told reporters Tuesday.
"I wish I could come to you with information that would explain why this happened, but we do need to acknowledge the courage of the young girl who escaped from that residence to bring attention so they can get the help they so need," Fellows said.
Six siblings under the age of 18
Neither law enforcement nor child protective services had been called to the home in the past, officials said.
Riverside County Department of Public Social Services Director Susan von Zabern said the incident "was the first opportunity we had to intervene."
Fellows, who likened the siblings' treatment to torture, said their mother was "perplexed as to why" authorities came to her home.
Sheriff's deputies found 12 victims there who "appeared malnourished and very dirty." Several were shackled to their beds "in dark and foul-smelling surroundings," the sheriff's department said.
All looked like children, police said, and officers were surprised to learn that seven of them are adults. The adults are being treated at Corona Regional Medical Center in Corona, and the six children are at Riverside University Health System Medical Center in Moreno Valley.
"It's hard to think of them as adults," said Mark Uffer, Corona Regional Medical Center CEO. "When you see them, they're small. They're stable. They're being fed."
Daniel Hoffman, a professor of nutritional sciences at Rutgers University, told CNN that growth is essentially halted at the age at which undernutrition begins.
"The problem is not having enough energy or micronutrients -- key nutrients like zinc, folate, iron -- for an extended period of time," he said. "Kids can become 'stunted,' meaning they're shorter than should be for their age. If you lack micronutrients, you can meet energy to live everyday and even have a normal body weight, but growth can still be stunted."
Fellows said that, so far, there was no indication of sexual abuse.
Six of the siblings are under 18, he said. Three were chained to furniture, according to the sheriff.
Couple renewed vows in front of children
The family has lived in Perris since 2014, Fellows said.
Neighbors said they knew a large family lived there, CNN affiliate KABC reported, but they never saw any of the younger children. They said the kids would emerge occasionally at the same time to work on the lawn and would head back in together.
One neighbor said the children appeared "very pale-skinned, almost like they'd never seen the sun."
Another neighbor, Kimberly Milligan, said the children were thin and appeared malnourished.
In 2015, Milligan said she was with her son checking out Christmas decorations on nearby homes. Some of the older Turpin children were putting up a Nativity scene outside their house, and she complimented their decorations.
"They just froze," Milligan recalled.
She described the parents as "standoffish -- not in a mean way."
Betty Turpin, the children's grandmother, said the entire family would vacation together and had yearly passes to Disneyland.
"This is a highly respectable family," she said.
A series of videos on social media showed the Turpins renewing their vows at the Elvis Chapel in Las Vegas in 2013 and 2015, with the children joining them.
In one ceremony, the girls, wearing the same purple plaid dresses and white shoes, lead the processional, and the boys, wearing dark suits, stand with their father.
An emotional David Turpin can be seen repeating his vows in the video. The children laugh along with an Elvis impersonator, and the couple kiss as their daughters clap.
Suspect's sister: 'Heartbroken' for nieces and nephews
In an interview with NBC, Louise Turpin's sister said she was "so heartbroken" for her nieces and nephews and surprised to learn of their living conditions.
"I can't even say the words to you that I would like to say to her. I'm so angry inside. I'm mad," said Turpin's sister, whom NBC identified as Teresa Robinette.
"I'm hurt," she said. "Our life wasn't perfect growing up but she didn't live like that. And neither did David." said.
Robinette said her dad was a preacher when she was younger.
"I feel like it's a bad dream," she said.
Neighbor called suspect's former Texas home 'the compound'
Fellows said they previously lived in Murrieta, in southwestern Riverside County, and in Texas.
The family lived in Rio Vista, Texas until 2010, and before that in Fort Worth, Texas, CNN affiliate KTVT reported.
The new owners who bought the Turpin's foreclosed home in Fort Worth kept pictures of the house's condition, the station reported. Windows were broken out and boarded up. Waste covered the carpet and walls, and there were scratches on the back of doors, the station reported.
Shelli Vinyard, a neighbor of the Turpins' Rio Vista home in Hill County, said she called the place "the compound."
"I thought it was like a religious compound over there," she said.
The family home-schooled their children and "kept them away from anybody," she recalled.
Vinyard said that, at first, the family was friendly and their children played together.
She recalled asking one of the children her name. The girl said they weren't allowed to tell people their names, the report said.
"Then, all of a sudden, after that conversation it kind of stopped. They quit ... hanging out together and playing together," Vinyard said.
Bankruptcy didn't seem to upset the couple
In 2011, they filed for bankruptcy in California, according to court records.
Ivan Trahan, an attorney who represented the couple at their bankruptcy hearing, told CNN that "there was nothing out of ordinary" about them in 2011. They "spoke lovingly of their children and even showed me their photos from Disneyland," he said.
David Turpin made about $140,000 a year as an engineer at Northrop Grumman, according to the bankruptcy documents. His wife's occupation was listed as homemaker.
They listed about $150,000 in assets, including about $87,000 from 401(k) plans from Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman, according to court papers. The documents listed debts of about $240,000, which included mostly credit cards and a foreclosed farm in Rio Vista, Texas, valued at $40,000.
A Lockheed Martin spokesman confirmed Turpin worked there and left the company in 2010.
In a statement, Tim Paynter, a vice president for the Northrop Grumman, referred questions about the case to authorities. "We are deeply troubled by the nature of the allegations against Mr. Turpin," the statement said.
Trahan said neither of the Turpins seemed upset about going through bankruptcy.
"They came with a lot of debt. We just knew there was no way they could make their payments," the lawyer said.
David Turpin is listed as the principal of the Sandcastle Day School, according to the California Department of Education website. It operated out of his home Perris and opened in March 2011.
The state education department does not have the authority to monitor or inspect private schools, spokesman Scott Roark said in a statement.
"We are sickened by this tragedy and relieved the children are now safe and authorities are investigating," the statement said. "Full-time private schools are required to register with the state to record their students' exemption from compulsory attendance at public schools."
CORRECTION: This story has been updated to give the correct spelling of Northrop Grumman and the correct age for David Turpin, who is 56. It also has been updated to give the correct date that the Turpins started living in Perris, California. The family has lived there since 2014, authorities said.

Boeing Tested Air Purifiers Like Those Widely Used in Schools. It Decided Not to Use Them in Planes.
Aerospace giant Boeing tested two kinds of ionization technologies — like those widely adopted in schools hoping to combat covid — to determine how well each killed germs on surfaces and decided that neither was effective enough to install on its commercial planes.
This story also ran on NBC News. It can be republished for free.
Boeing noted in its conclusion that “air ionization has not shown significant disinfection effectiveness.”
Companies that make the air purifiers say they emit charged ions, or “activated oxygen,” that are said to inactivate bacteria and viruses in the air. Boeing did not test the technology’s effectiveness in the air, only on surfaces. It also used a “surrogate” for the virus that causes covid-19.
The Boeing study has been cited in a federal lawsuit filed by a Maryland consumer against Global Plasma Solutions, maker of the “needlepoint bipolar ionization” technology that a Boeing spokesperson said its engineers tested.
The proposed class-action lawsuit says GPS makes “deceptive, misleading, and false” claims about its products based on company-funded studies that are “not applicable to real world conditions.”
A GPS spokesperson said the lawsuit is “baseless and misleading” and that the company will aggressively defend against it. He added that Boeing “researchers deemed the study ‘inconclusive.’”
“Plaintiff’s Complaint throws the proverbial kitchen sink at GPS in the hopes that something might stick,” the air purifier company says in court documents filed May 24 as part of its motion to dismiss the proposed class action. “But it is devoid of any concrete, specific allegations plausibly alleging that GPS made even a single false or deceptive statement about its products.”
The plaintiff’s case cites a KHN investigation that found that more than 2,000 U.S. schools had bought air-purifying technology, including ionizers. Many schools used federal funds to purchase the products. In April, a covid-19 commission task force from The Lancet, a leading medical journal, composed of top international health, education and air-quality experts, called various air-cleaning technologies — ionization, plasma and dry hydrogen peroxide — “often unproven.”
Boeing said in its report that with ionization there is “very little external peer reviewed research in comparison to other traditional disinfection technologies” such as chemical, UV and thermal disinfection and HEPA filters, all of which it relies on to sanitize its planes.
The controversy is getting the attention of school officials from coast to coast. They include one California superintendent who cited the lawsuit and switched off that district’s more than 400 GPS devices.
For worried parents and academic air-quality experts who regard industry-backed studies with skepticism, the Boeing report heightens their concerns.
“This [study] is totally damning,” said Delphine Farmer, a Colorado State University associate professor who specializes in atmospheric and indoor chemistry who reviewed the Boeing report. “It should just raise flags for absolutely everyone.”
‘No Reduction’ in Bacteria
GPS pointed to another study, one conducted in the weeks before Boeing began its study in September, by a third-party lab. It completed a study of two devices — powered by GPS technology — that another aviation company now markets to clean the air and surfaces in planes.
That study looked at the effect of the ionizers on the virus that causes covid-19 when used on aluminum, a type of plastic called Kydex and leather. The test report shows it was conducted in a sealed, 20-by-8-foot chamber, with airflow speeds of 2,133 feet per minute — or about 24 mph. At the end of 30 minutes, “the overall average decrease in active virus” was more than 99%.
“Given the specific environment this was tested in, the quality of the materials, and the method in which the virus was dispersed, it is safe to say that the bipolar ionization system used in this experiment has the ability to deactivate SARS-CoV-2 with the given ion counts,” the Aug. 7 report from the third-party lab says.
The following month, Boeing began its own testing of GPS devices and another kind of ionization technology.
The Boeing study cites a GPS white paper that says its device killed 99.68% of E. coli bacteria in one test in 15 minutes. GPS records show the test was done on bacteria suspended in the air. The Boeing engineers used the company’s technology to try to kill E. coli on surfaces in a lab but found “no observable reduction in viability” after an hour.
The Boeing study notes it “was unable to replicate supplier results in terms of antimicrobial effectiveness.”
GPS cautioned that the Boeing tests examined disinfection of surfaces, not the air: “While GPS products do have the ability to help reduce pathogens in air and on surfaces, GPS products are not chemical surface disinfectants.”
Yet surface tests comprise half of the test results the company lists on its “pathogen reduction” webpage, a GPS spokesperson confirmed.
Boeing researchers found another lab result they could not replicate: While the GPS white paper reported a 96.24% reduction in Staphylococcus aureus in 30 minutes, Boeing engineers found “no reductions” in the bacteria in an hourlong test.
Boeing found minimal or no reduction on surfaces in four other pathogens it tested with GPS ionizers for an hour in a Huntsville, Alabama, lab.
Notably, Boeing’s tests in Huntsville detected no hazardous ozone gas from the GPS unit, the report says. The “corona discharge” ionization technology from another vendor that Boeing also studied did emit ozone at levels that “exceeded regulatory standards.”
A University of Arizona lab test described in the Boeing study found that the GPS device showed a 66.7% inactivation of a common cold coronavirus on a surface after an hour of exposure at up to 62,000 negative ions per cubic centimeter. That ion level is far higher than the amount of ions company leaders have said the devices tend to deliver to a typical room. Those levels have ranged from 2,000 to 10,000 and even up to 30,000 ions per cubic centimeter when an HVAC system is running, according to records provided to KHN and statements made by company representatives.
In a presentation during a Berkeley Unified School District meeting in California, a physicist who appeared with executives said a level of more than 60,000 ions per cubic centimeter “has been shown to be not healthy.”
GPS noted that Boeing deemed the 66.7% effectiveness rate in killing the common cold virus “statistically significant.” A GPS spokesperson said the result validates needlepoint bipolar ionization’s “effectiveness against certain pathogens.” In its report, Boeing called the test results “inconclusive” due to “lack of experimental confirmation.”
A GPS spokesperson also highlighted a passage in the Boeing report’s conclusion that said: “There remains significant interest in air ionization due to lack of byproduct production, minimal risk to human health, minimum risk to airplane materials and systems, and the potential for persistent disinfection of air and surfaces under specific flow conditions.”
The Boeing study concluded in January. In April, GPS published the results of additional tests it funded at a third-party lab showing its technology “is highly effective in neutralizing the SARS-CoV-2 pathogen.”
Boeing engineers said their study highlights the need for those in the ionization business to standardize the evaluation of the technology “to allow comparison to other proven methods of disinfection.”
Ripple Effects of the Boeing Study
On May 7, law firms representing a man who spent over $750 on a GPS air cleaner in Texas filed the “fraudulent concealment” lawsuit against GPS in U.S. District Court in Delaware.
The lawsuit claims that the defendant’s “misrepresentations and false statements were woven into an extensive and long-term advertising campaign … accelerating during the COVID-19 pandemic.”
“People are being victimized by these companies for profit,” said Mickey Mills, a Houston attorney for the plaintiff. “People are scared because of covid, and they capitalize on it.”
In filing a motion to dismiss the case, GPS told the court the lawsuit was an “attempt to distort the facts and assert baseless claims, doing grave damage to GPS’s business in the process.”
The GPS court document also says the disclaimers on its website “make it unreasonable for any consumers to believe that the efficacy demonstrated in GPS studies will necessarily be the same for their particular application.”
It asserts that most of the GPS statements identified in the plaintiff’s lawsuit — such as “safe to use” and “cleaner air” — amount to “non-actionable puffery” as they are “vague generalities and statements of opinion.”
The lawsuit spurred a Newark, California, school district to turn off its GPS devices, according to a May 18 memo from Superintendent Mark Triplett to district families. The district spent nearly $360,000 on the devices, an April board presentation shows.
The roughly 5,500-student district bought GPS units for every school HVAC system, Triplett said in a March school board meeting in which he noted the technology “arguably is much better than any filter.” By May, he said in the memo the district had become aware of the lawsuit “alleging the misrepresentation” of the devices and would continue to monitor the situation.
A company spokesperson noted GPS appreciates Newark’s concerns and has reached out to share additional data and answer questions, as well as extended “an offer to conduct onsite testing to verify the safety of this technology and the added benefits.”
Megan McMillen, vice president of the Newark Teachers Association and a special education preschool teacher, said it was disheartening to know the cash-strapped district in the Bay Area spent so much on the devices instead of other safety measures or services to mitigate learning loss after the chaotic pandemic year.
“For such a big chunk of that [money] going to something potentially ineffective … is really frustrating,” she said.

Getting a divorce in California
Getting a divorce in California can have serious long-term repercussions. There are strict legal requirements, so the first thing to do is to hire a Divorce Attorney, who will advise you on the process, and ultimately guide you through what can be a terrible period in your life.
Getting a Divorce
The divorce will have serious long-term effects both emotionally and legally on both parties. there are strict legal requirements covering all aspects from legal separation to deciding how the property should be divided. As you can't sift through this yourself it is essential to retain a Divorce Attorney, the whole process can become very confusing for those without the proper legal training. Once you are connected with a trusted Divorce Attorney, it will relieve you of some of the stress associated with this life-changing event.
Divorce Attorney
Once a suitable Divorce Attorney has been retained he/she will advise you of the difference between separation and divorce. Sometimes legal separation is a court-mandated step of the divorce process, and a period of living apart may be required before the divorce proceeds. This point needs some clarification, especially if children are involved. You may be looking at a no-fault divorce. California, along with other states allow no-fault divorce when one spouse alleges that the marriage has broken down and there is no hope of redeeming it, a divorce can be granted with or without the consent of the other spouse. When filing for divorce the first time around, you will be unfamiliar with the process.
The First Steps in Divorce Proceedings
The spouse filing for divorce must be eligible to make a legal divorce petition and have grounds for divorce.
Next is requesting any temporary orders that concern custody and housing support. Orders concerning financial support for the period of the proceedings. Restraining orders to protect a shared estate from being plundered by either party before the proceedings are finalized.
The filing spouse must serve papers to the other spouse and have proof of having done so. Once this has happened, the receiving spouse must respond in a timely manner. This is all quite complex and is why you will require a Divorce Attorney.
Negotiations and Settlements
At this stage of proceedings, any negotiations and settlements are worked through prior to the trial, both parties should have legal representation.
A trial date will then be set, to work out the resolution of disputed items, and a judgment will ultimately be rendered. Member Spotlight
