Lawless Spaces by Corey Ann Haydu
On her sixteenth birthday, Mimi's mother gives her a notebook to use as a journal, a tradition in their family. The notebooks of her mother, grandmother, and going back to her great great grandmother sit untouched in the attic.
I really liked this book. I didn't think that the novel in verse style made it flow well, but I liked that each woman in the family had similar but different issues. They all mirrored each other well.
Recommended for: people interested in novels in verse, feminists, and people interested in a book that explores generational trauma
Content Warnings: sexual trauma, sexual abuse, generational trauma

books I’ve read in 2023 📖 no. 070
Eventown by Corey Ann Haydu
“Sometimes I think feelings are bigger than people. More powerful. They make people do things that can't be undone. I used to think feelings were part of a person, but lately I've been thinking they are separate beings, that they come like aliens and invade people's bodies and cause destruction.”

“Stack WISHING SEASON next to BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA. Anica Mrose Rissi paints a picture and sings a song with a tremendous, unforgettable voice. As emotionally healing as it is ultimately joyful.” —Rita Williams Garcia, Newbery Honor author of ONE CRAZY SUMMER
“Beautiful and moving, this book will make you cry. But it will also mend your heart. A story that reminds us that love will help see us through, even in the darkest of times.” —Jasmine Warga, Newbery Honor author of OTHER WORDS FOR HOME
“Tender, heart-shifting, and deeply absorbing, Anica Mrose Rissi’s latest novel is a magical exploration of what it means to love and let go. A truly beautiful and profoundly intimate story.” —Corey Ann Haydu, author of EVENTOWN
“With beautiful prose and quiet humor, Anica Mrose Rissi tells a story of grief and loneliness and love and joy, the meandering, maddening mess that is healing from a great loss, and the (kind, awkward, surprising) people who help you through it. A quietly powerful tale that feels like an ageless classic.” —Claire Legrand, author of SOME KIND OF HAPPINESS
"A startlingly honest portrayal of grief, WISHING SEASON carries us through the bewildering beauty of a perfect Maine summer and a season of terrible loss. I loved this wise, lovely, delicate story of what we hold onto and how we let go.” —Laurel Snyder, author of ORPHAN ISLAND

Reading This Week 2024 #23
I was busy yesterday and so didn't have a chance to sit down and type up this report.
Finished:
What Did you Eat Yesterday? Vol. 9 by Fumi Yoshinaga, translated by Jocelyn Allen as usual this manga was very gentle and sweet daily life stuff for a maturing gay couple in tokyo. always a nice and funny read
Swallowing the Ash by Laurel Reynolds a chapbook of poetry gifted to me by the poet themself in thanks for checking in on their cat while they were out of town one time. it's about sexual trauma and its aftermath and I really enjoyed reading it
Rape and Representation edited by Lynn A. Higgins and Brenda R. Silver the first major accomplishment of my summer research reading. the essays that i think I'll find most usual for my work in the fall were the introduction for the whole collection, "The Education of Chloe: Erotic Protocols and Prior Violence" by John J. Winkler, ""A Little More than Persuading": Tess and the Subject of Sexual Violence" by Ellen Rooney, "Alice Walker's "Advancing Luna- and Ida B. Wells": A Struggle Toward Sisterhood" by Nellie V. McKay, and "Screen/Memory: Rape and Its Alibis in Last Year at Marienbad" by Lynn A. Higgins. I'll be returning to all of those to summarize/annotate and grab all of the quotes relevant to my work in the future.
The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System, Vol. 2 and 3 by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu, translated by Faelicy & Lily, with illustrations by Xiao Tong Kong (Velinxi) and in a near (but not complete) 180 turn from how sexual violence is handled in the works above, here's some problematic gay shit that I had just. such a fucking good time reading! I had such a fucking blast and I will be reading the epilogue volume in the near future, but make no mistake, there is pretty much nothing good or healthy in the central relationship, except maybe for the fact that it's setup and the frequent obliviousness of SQQ is really fucking funny. Luo Binghe's abandonment issues are so turbo nuclear insane that in the "original work" prior to any isekai shenanigans, he had a team of literally hundreds of wives working around the clock to manage him, and unfortunately in the isekai'd version we read, all of those issues are aimed very squarely at One Unprepared Straight Man. My heart goes out to you Shen Qingqiu. Best of luck with your narrative mandated boyfriend.
open my lungs to let you in by ghostybreads on ao3 whoops, immediately went and read some funny SVSSS fanfic, featuring an truth serum poison, and Luo Binghe getting jealous over Shen Qingqiu petting a fucking dog. very funny imo
DNFs:
One Jar of Magic by Corey Ann Haydu, audiobook read by Cassandra Morris
Doll Bones by Holly Black, audiobook read by Nick Podehl
both of the above were read on recommendation of that kid I've mentioned in previous posts. Doll Bones was by far the one that grabbed me the most, but I wasn't in the mood to pick it up again before my loan from the library lapsed...Maybe I'll check it out again another time?
Reading Plans:
read interesting looking works from the bibliography of the Higgins and Silver collection, and read Reading Rape by Sabine Sielke! other than that... just whatever seems interesting? probably some fanfic

for the uh. ask thing! top 5 books ^^
The Simon Snow Series by Rainbow Rowell - Of course this is my number one. Current obsession ❤️❤️ It’s honestly such a slay series omg my absolute favorite right now.
Under The Whispering Door by TJ Klune - Actually took me out. Obsessed with this book beyond all reason. It’s a love letter to grief and what comes after death and the uncertainty of life; with an extra little love story thrown in ❤️ This was such a beautiful read and it honestly made me cry and laugh and UGH I love it!
Rules For Stealing Stars by Corey Ann Haydu - Beautiful, beautiful, BEAUTIFUL! A story to family, abuse, hiding, and learning how to not just survive, but to thrive. My favorite part of this book was the magic and the scenery. I would definitely recommend this!
Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas - FUCKING BEAUTIFUL ❤️❤️ A well-written story about a trans boy trying to prove himself to his traditional Latinx family with a dash of deathly romance thrown in 😌 Absolutely GORGEOUS! I loved the vibes of this book. A perfect October read 😍
The Girls I’ve Been by Tess Sharpe - Wow. Just wow. The mystery, suspense, and overall adrenaline of this story was INTENSE and refreshing and all the right things. In this story you learn of a girl named Nora who isn’t who she seems, her not so secret girlfriend, their best friend, and two bank robbers dead set on keeping them hostage. I could go on and on about this book and it’s brilliant storytelling, but I think it’s best for you to just experience it for yourself.

Shiny New Library Prospects
Since I was not joking about the requests (except for having slightly fewer than 9) --
(I was doing so good about staying away from temptations, but then I had to go and read people’s end-of-year wrap-up posts and now I am FLOODED WITH NEW INTERESTS again)
1. Polo Cowboy - G. Neri: Mostly I just want to have the full story in my head and I’m embarrassed I didn’t get to it last year. Knocking this one off a checklist, basically, but the rest I’m really excited for!
2. Run, Rose, Run - Dolly Parton and James Patterson: I genuinely want to know who is doing the bulk of the writing here, or if they just went ‘eff it’ and hired a secret third person to ghostwrite. Anyway, this came to my attention as someone panning it, so I’m cautious in my optimism, BUT this one does come with a Dolly Parton album full of songs written for the novel, and THAT IS MY DREAM FOR BOOKS ABOUT MUSIC ALWAYS. This isn’t the first novel I’ve read about a young lady trying to make it in the country music biz and by god it won’t be the last.
3. Lawless Spaces - Corey Ann Haydu: as much as I try to avoid books in verse, something about the look of this one just really appeals to me and I wish to hold it in my hands and luxuriate over it (also, I love stories that trace the maternal line).
4. The Final Gambit - Jennifer Lynn Barnes: I was thinking about rereading the first two first, but eh, now I think I just want to dive in so I finally put myself on the request list, whenever it comes in. Probably not too long; currently #20 on 7 copies.
5. Treasure State - C.J. Box: released on September 27th, I’m ready for another Cassie DeWell book. I was waiting for the request list to calm down on this a bit before I joined so they wouldn’t order too many copies, and it’s still busy, but I’m #56 for 13 copies now so also not bad.
6. Friends Like These - Jennifer Lynn Alvarez: I loved her YA debut so I’m excited for another thriller.
7. Scattered Showers: Stories - Rainbow Rowell: I keep forgetting this exists (initially I ignored it because I was like, oh, Simon Snow is in this? and promptly assumed it was full of genres I hate, but then I actually read a review that addressed all the stories and this might actually be the most contemporary writing she’s done in a decade, so ON IT!) (secret real impetus: there’s a story with the Attachments characters and people don’t seem to love it, but I don’t even care, give it to me)
The problem is I still need to pick something else to actually read because I can’t get my hands on any of them until tomorrow at the earliest, on account of the weather NOT cooperating enough for me to pick even the one checked in at the local branch, let alone the ones I requested from farther away.
EDIT: I read a book I bought almost exactly 2 years ago*, that secretly I had always been hoping/intending to read in January, so not only did I accomplish that goal, I also got a Mount TBR entry. Best of all, it was awesome and totally captivating from beginning to end. What a good use of my afternoon.
*The Little Woods
EDIT 2: finished all of them by the end of the month except #4, which I’m still waiting for, and have decided to pause my request on for a while because the acute must-read-asap! feeling has receded a bit.

Currently Reading: Lawless Spaces by Corey Ann Haydu
I'm liking this so far. I'm actually close to 80% done now. I do feel like the poetry is really weird and the odd spacing messes with the flow for me. I guess I'm just used to Ellen Hopkins's novels in verse.

Cool find at the library
So I was at the library today, and I pulled out a book that looked interesting. This one:
Tumblr media
[ID: photo of a book cover. The book is titled “Ever Cursed”. The author is Corey Ann Haydu, and the cover design has a roman numeral clock surrounded by thorns and roses. End ID.]
And I flipped it open since it looked interesting, and I found something pretty cool. This book has a trigger warning. It is the first time I have ever seen a publish book with a trigger warning at the beginning, so, kudos to the author!
Tumblr media
[ID: photo of a page from the book. There is a textbox with the words “Dear Reader, Ever Cursed includes content involving sexual assault. It may also be triggering if you are struggling with, being treated for, or are in recovery for an eating disorder or disordered eating. As always, read with care, being mindful of what content is safe and comfortable for you. With love, Corey.” End ID]
I hope this catches on, to be honest.

hey guys i forgot this post existed. uh. I found the book like 2 days after I made this post, it’s Eventown by Corey Ann Haydu lol
would anyone be able to help me find a book? It's a middle grade/young ish ya book that I read once and I can't find it anymore
So this girl who likes baking moves to a new town (reason unspecified until the end) after having been there once, and it seeming perfect. The ice cream shop had flavors that change every day and the weather was good and people were nice. When they move there she realizes that they do basically the same thing everyday, everything is basically the same, the ice cream shop just has three flavors and switches. She likes baking and making interesting combinations but everyone there wants her to stick to the basic/normal way (Eg: I vaguely remember there being a scene where she brings peanut butter to a bonfire for putting on smores and everyone wants her to do it the normal way) There's like and HOA/city council thing that wants them (the family) to do a welcome thing or something and she declines every time bc it feels off and when she does theres something about erasing memories but it turns out they moved after her brother killed himself.
This is a really shitty description but it's all I can remember and I need to find it because it felt like a fever dream and I want to read it again.
