Take the Train to Manchester
The new Corduroy Institute album is finally available for download on Bandcamp—link in bio. This record contains nine songs which were created between December of 2019 and August of 2023— the longest span of time we have ever devoted to any of our releases.
Take the Train to Manchester coalesced around the principle of discontinuity. Every piece was crafted intermittently over a period of years, thus allowing audio recordings from different moments of our past intermingle to create compositions which we ourselves could have never foreseen. The end result is a document of alienation written to and from the forgotten.
As with previous efforts, the music was created through multitracked improvisations and the lyrics were derived from cut-ups taken from across the gamut of print media. During the course of our sonic research we employed the Bass VI, synthesizers, guitars, drum machines, samplers, guitar pedals, loopers, digital modular synthesizers, and even a microcassette recorder to create the sonorities on these recordings.
We invite you to listen, download, and provide your peer review.

Paul McCartney, Celia Mortimer, Iris & Vi Caldwell & Mike McCartney: Sketches for a Coming-of-Age Novel.
All quotes from TUNE IN by Mark Lewisohn, except the last one.
[Paul] had two main girlfriends in the last weeks of 1962 and neither knew of the other. One was Celia Mortimer, 17, the strikingly attractive redhead from art school who designed her own clothes and was a big Beatles fan at the Cavern.
'In my first year at art College everyone was wild about trad jazz, but then word came up the hill that ‘things were happening’ at the Cavern; a few of us went down one lunchtime to have a look—and there were the Beatles. […] It was the first time anyone in Britain had the black polo neck, black corduroy, existentialist look. I instantly took their lead and started to make hip black corduroy things to wear.'
‘[…] Paul was attractive, intelligent, arty, all the things that appealed to me, plus he was good to be with: a genuine, gentle person who wanted to please. He was the complete opposite of John, who was snarly and grumpy and incredibly, incisively funny. Paul was the nice one. We started to go out, but things were still quite innocent. Because I lived some way out of Liverpool there weren’t many places we could go, except to sit in his dad’s front room or my friend’s front room, or the cinema—we saw the first James Bond film.’ EXOTIC NIGHTMARES
Paul’s other girlfriend was Iris Caldwell—Rory Storm’s witty, pretty, blonde sister; George’s first love; the 18-year-old daughter of Ma Storm, whose house, Hurricaneville at 54 Broad Green Road, was central to the Beatles’ late-night social scene.
‘He had a beautiful voice and puppy-dog eyes,’ Iris says, ‘and he was much more interested in me than I was in him. I wanted more than a tuppence-ha’penny guitarist of a Liverpool group.’ Iris’s professional dancing career had taken off: she was as busy as Paul, working summer seasons and London shows and touring around the country; they could only see each other when their diaries dovetailed, and just as Paul was with Celia when Iris was out of town, she was secretly going out with Frank Ifield. […]
Iris always knew that a big part of the attraction for anyone going out with her or Rory was the chance of extended time at Hurricaneville, to hang longer around her dad Ernie and especially her mum, Vi. […] ‘Mum never chucked anyone out,’ Iris says. ‘We were all late-night people apart from me dad, who the Beatles called the Crusher because he had exotic nightmares and ate household objects.’ […]
Mary had been gone for six years this October, and Vi Caldwell was one of the women who tried to fill the breach. ‘I was practically a mother to Paul,’ she said without boasting. She made him food and drink, took his stage-soaked shirts and washed and ironed them, and shared easy intimacies. ‘Paul used to like her combing his legs,’ Iris says. ‘He had really hairy legs and he’d come in from the Cavern all tired, roll up his trousers and she used to comb his legs. How ridiculous can you get? But he adored my mum and my mum adored him.’
Vi recalls: ‘Paul was very temperamental. He would come on occasions and would be terrifically friendly and down-to-earth, and on other occasions he would come and be rather aloof and we wondered if we had offended him, as if he was thinking ‘I’m being too friendly so I’ll keep you in your place.’ That was our impression.’
THRILLING IN A DIFFERENT WAY
[Paul] was without the others, but with Celia Mortimer…and a new song. It was Tuesday/Wednesday 23/24 October [1962], the Beatles’ sole two-day break of the year, and Paul decided to leave his car at home and have an adventure: he and Celia hitch-hiked to London to see Ivan Vaughan. Paul loved hitching: he enjoyed chatting to strangers and seeing himself in an observational role, but he’d only done it with George or John, never with a girl. Celia—intelligent, chic, a pretty redhead—made it thrilling in a different way. And it was to see the brilliant Ivy, his Institute mate and John’s boyhood pal. […]
The new song was I Saw Her Standing There, though it had no title as yet. Its melody and structure skidded into Paul’s head late on Monday as he drove back from a Nems Enterprises Showdance in Widness. This was a sophistication of delivery had never experienced, inspiration so excitingly hot that when he got to Hurricaneville he grabbed an acoustic guitar and started working it out. […] It was truly a magical moment for Rory Storm, who’d never seen anyone write a song before. Vi and Iris would always maintain that he asked Paul if he could have it, exclusively, and Paul said yes—but as Rory didn’t have a record contract it’s unclear why he asked and Paul may have said yes only to regain some necessary peace and quiet.
Celia: ‘We had an amazing time, just wandering the streets in the sunshine, looking at London, holding hands and having fun, and Paul had the melody of what became I Saw Her Standing There going round his head all day, humming and singing it and fleshing out the words. […] He said, ‘What rhymes with “We danced through the night?” and I came up with ‘We held each other tight’, which was really quite naff, but he used it.’ BACK TO McCARTNEY-LENNON
However, the song was completed only when he had a front parlour session with John at 20Forthlin Road. They tried out little bits on Jim Macs Nems piano but mostly used guitars, working ‘eyeball to eyeball’ just like when they’d first written together here as schoolboys. Mike took photographs of them sitting by the little tiled fireplace—important historic images, the only such photos ever taken—so here we see these two sharp ambitious tuned-in young man looking down at an old Liverpool Institute exercise book in which Paul has written the words, complete with plenty of crossings-out. John is wearing his black horn-rim glasses and playing his Jumbo Gibson, Paul is playing a cheap Spanish acoustic of unknown history. Another original, a McCartney-Lennon one, is taking shape right here, right now. BIG PLAYER CELIA AND THE OTHER McCARTNEY BOY
Celia Mortimer’s relationship with Paul ended in the last weeks of 1962. ‘As the Beatles spent more time in London, Paul was there and not in Liverpool so much, and our situation just fizzled out. There was no time for it.’ She went on to become a big player on the London fashion scene, with her own label and studio on Great Portland Street, just a long from where she spent a few hours with Paul in 1962. In between times, she went out for a long time with Mike McCartney and was part of the Liverpool poetry scene.
Mike (a Ladies’ hairdresser at the time): MY FIRST LOVE AND BOB 'FOLK RUBBISH' DYLAN (from The Macs, 1981)
One day my first real love, after mum, walked into the salon; she was one of a group of models posing for the Daily Post and Echo. I was brushing up the hair as it cascaded endlessly down on to the floor. I wasn't exactly the brushing up which excited her, it was the way I did it (isn't it always?). The brush was balanced, she later recalled, on the end of my index finger, the furthest point from my body and, with absolute disdain, I followed it across the shop floor.
Not being a Post and Echo model at all, but in truth a hungry student plying her body for money, she returned for the free evening classes where she became my model, and I discovered that her name was Celia. From a model customer she became a model model, and from a model model we became a model couple.
She was the first woman I gave myself to, and she gave herself in return. In her Husky Street flat we got lost in each other's body and mind; we swam together through many Liverpool 8 late nights and often into the morning, when she would get up to cook breakfast and put on records. I would just lie there, male chauv-like. One morning she kept playing a particular album which didn't impress me.
'Who's that Ceel?'
'Someone they keep playing at college . . . Bob Dylan.'
'Never heard of him.'
'Neither had I, but after a while he's quite good.'
"Ceel—my first real love (after Mum)." Photo by Mike McCartney.

Magical Vacation trivia - Twigadamus
I've brought this up to a few people before, but I might as well leave it here so the word can be spread ;)
Twigadamus's Japanese name is プーレグ Pūregu, which comes from グレープ Gurēpu (grape). While this may just seem like another food-based name at first, one particular line of dialogue reveals something rather interesting.
When talking to Corduroy, an NPC standing outside Ambergris Prep on Cassia, she says that Rogan Josh, Twigadamus, Biscotti, and Biek Fowler all graduated from the institution.
In Japanese, however, the people she lists are Jin Reo (Kale), Yuga Tāba (Rogan Josh), Pūregu Lakeside, Gran Dragée (Biscotti), Bie Maruku (Biek Fowler), and Blueberry Lakeside.
The English version of Magical Starsign doesn't want you to know that Twigadamus is actually related to Blueberry from Magical Vacation.

snippet #2 from my wip
Even if Alastair was unsure if he could spend time with Charles that night, he was going to do all he could to look his best. So he brushed off his best suit, a maroon corduroy jacket with matching shoes, black pants, and an amber cravat that brought out the dark brown flecks in his black eyes. Looking in the mirror, he thought that he looked quite handsome. Perhaps Charles would feel more comfortable applying the word to him now at seventeen, when he had finished growing and no longer was made up of jutting planes and angles.
“Why are you looking at yourself?” Cordelia’s voice came from the door, and Alastair turned to look at her. She wore a long gown of pastel pink, roses strewn throughout her hair. She looked much older than Alastair ever thought of her. To him, perhaps she would always look like the gremlin-like wild child who leapt out at him from beneath his bed to give him a fright.
Alastair rolled his eyes at her. “Why shouldn’t I look at myself? Are you suggesting that I wander about the London Institute with a crooked tie and hair as lopsided as your own?”
Cordelia gave him a long-suffering look, turned on her heel, and walked away.

The Supima Design Competition (SDC) has reached a significant milestone, celebrating its 17th year with a spotlight on emerging design talent at New York Fashion Week (NYFW). Hosted at the historic Prince George Ballroom, the event featured an impressive runway presentation where finalists unveiled their collections, each meticulously crafted under the guidance of industry mentors. The primary goal of the SDC is to connect recent Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) graduates from six prominent design schools across the United States to the fashion industry. This year, Emma Joan Foley from Parsons School of Design was awarded the coveted title of competition winner. The finalists were tasked with designing a women’s eveningwear collection exclusively using five specific Supima fabrics: denim, twill, corduroy, knit, and velveteen. Each designer had to construct a unique look from each fabric, pushing the envelope of creativity and technical skills. Not just a competition, the SDC invests in its participants through mentoring and educational initiatives. Supima actively donates fabric yardage to partner institutions and runs workshops on cotton quality and responsible production practices. This enriches students' understanding of raw materials, which is vital as they transition from academic life to professional careers. The competition thrives on a structured program involving weekly check-ins and progress reviews with a dedicated team of mentors, including renowned fashion designer Bibhu Mohapatra, who celebrated his 10th anniversary as a mentor for the competition. Midyette, the Vice President of Marketing and Promotions at Supima, emphasized the commitment to nurturing creativity: “Every year we feel like we have seen everything under the sun when it comes to manipulation of the fabrics, creativity, and uniqueness in design and silhouettes. But the new group comes in and they continue to impress, pushing Supima to new levels.” The experience gained through the SDC mimics running one's own fashion house, a significant advantage for graduates entering the competitive fashion landscape. Many alumni, such as Andrew Kwon and Jeffrey Taylor, have successfully launched their namesake labels, showcasing the tangible impact of the SDC on their careers. This year’s event was hosted by designer Phillip Lim, who joined a distinguished panel of industry professionals, including fashion creatives Jerome Lamaar and Cipriana Quann, as well as New York Fashion Week founder Fern Mallis. This diverse group of judges, varying from stylists and influencers to experienced fashion writers, provides the finalists with invaluable networking opportunities and insights that can help shape their careers post-competition. Established in 1954, Supima has positioned itself as the marketing and promotional authority for American Pima cotton, renowned for its exceptional quality. Grown exclusively on about 300 family farms, Supima cotton represents the top 1 percent of cotton quality available, characterized by its longer fibers that yield superior strength and durability. The introduction of the AQRe Project enhances transparency in the supply chain, allowing consumers to trace their fabric back to its source, an increasingly appealing aspect in today’s conscientious market. Each finalist was given a chance to express their individual design philosophy and share insights from their experience with Supima cotton. Emma Joan Foley, for instance, experimented with manipulating fabrics to mimic leather-like qualities, while Mina Piao emphasized sustainability in her knitwear, incorporating algae-based bioplastic to innovate her designs. Marina Lamphier highlighted the importance of blending contrasting design elements to create functional yet stylish garments, showcasing how collaboration and resource management are critical in realizing a cohesive collection. Lizzy Truitt, inspired by her family’s farming background, advocated for sustainable practices and aimed to uplift local communities through her fashion ventures.
Jules Gourley’s approach to design emphasized a material-first philosophy, leveraging the unique properties of Supima to inform their creative process. Lastly, Henry Hawk asserted the significance of learning from historical production methods to innovate future sustainable practices in denim. The Supima Design Competition serves not only as a launchpad for emerging talent but also fosters a community of innovators eager to redefine the fashion industry. As trends continue to shift towards sustainability and ethical practices, competitions like SDC are pivotal in nurturing forward-thinking designers who are prepared to lead the next generation of fashion. In summary, participants of the Supima Design Competition leave with not only an enhanced portfolio to propel them into their careers but also the experience and connections necessary to make their unique mark in the industry. The impact of this competition resonates beyond the runway, illustrating a commitment to creative excellence and sustainability in fashion.

March 29, 2021: Two years ago today, Corduroy Institute obtained the E-mu ESI-4000. This purchase marked our first foray into rackamount samplers.
Since our first recordings, digital samplers have played a pivotal role in our composition. Initially, samplers with a drum machine form factor were used to establish the pulse of the music. Later we acquired keyboard-based samplers to access polyphony and multilayered tones. As functional as these are, transporting them between our multiple studios hindered their practicality.
In 2021, however, we made a leap into the rackmount world by obtaining an ESI-4000. This unit came with RAM upgrades and a USB floppy drive.
The previous owner was critical of the workflow and we have to concur. This is the first and only time we have ever had to print an owner's manual for any of our devices. The operating system, the navigation, the nomenclature, and the file conventions all conspire to make this unit unusually abstruse.
Despite these flaws, it remains a worthwhile sound processor. Samples acquire a pleasing metallic quality during transposition. The filter section is among the most extensive and each one can absolutely transform the basic tone. The ability to alter the bit rate also allows a sample to become degraded to uncannily precise depths. Finally, there are ways to induce errors which make it a curious part of the arsenal.
You can hear the E-mu ESI-4000 on "In This Confessional" where it provides percussive hits thanks to external MIDI control from the Arturia Microfreak. That is, thus far, our sole recorded use of the unit within a Corduroy Institute song. Most of the time, it serves as intermediary sound processor whose sampled contents then get sampled onto other samplers.
As always, however, further exploration and sonic research awaits.

Jon asks to see certain outfits as a treat? I'm curious, what does he like to see?
Got a couple asks about outfits, so. Both their fashion styles contribute:
As a child of the 90's, Martin's vintage aesthetic leans towards the sort of things that have aged well from that decade, mixed with styles from the 60's - 80's, and newer stuff that goes well with it. Not that he wears anything so dated it looks weird, or so stereotypical that it could be straight from a catalogue. More of a vaguely retro and homey look, with lots of yellows, oranges, greens, blues and browns. Band t-shirts, TV show mascots and logos that look nerdy but not too childish, 'Keep Calm and Carry On' and other cheerful phrases, rainbow pride designs, scenic prints, and sometimes stripes and patterns, when he can layer them in a way that doesn't look too flashy. Cable knit jumpers, cardigans with wooden buttons, corduroy trousers, comfy jeans, and lace up ankle boots.
Since he tends to buy second hand clothes in plus sizes, everything he really likes was a lucky find, and he tries to look after it with a lot of hand washing, and occasional repairs if need be. For his first few years at the Institute, while he was quite desperately pretending to be older, he only wore the smartest clothes he owned to work. The button up shirts and jumpers that looked the most nondescript and professional. It took a few years for him to relax and start showing more personality, which Diana gently encouraged. So Martin understands Jon's insecurities about dressing for the job, he really does, especially knowing that he's been lying about his age too, but still...
Jon treats professional attire as a performance that he needs to participate in to gain access to opportunities and maintain his position, the same way he exaggerates his posh accent and his age. Working hard isn't always enough in other people's eyes, and he can't coast on being likeable or well connected, but he can make sure he looks and sounds like he belongs, to carve out a niche where he has some stability and respect. Once he's responsible for others, he's judged on their performance too, and in theory, smartening up ought to be the low hanging fruit; it's easier to remind someone to polish their shoes than to teach them Latin. (Of course, that goes out the window if they come to work in trainers, but... some people have other strengths to fall back on.)
In his time off, there's no pressure to live up to anyone else's standards, so when he's by himself, he draws the line at 'I won't leave the house in pajamas, even if I'm only nipping round the corner for milk', and some of his casual clothes get quite ratty with age before he gets rid of them. Still, he does like academic fashion for its own sake, and he's a history nerd, so he'll sometimes mix and match smart clothes with ones that are more quirky or relaxed, e.g. a maroon silk waistcoat, a white shirt with baggy sleeves, skinny black jeans, and a pair of combat boots that he's had since uni.
So when Jon has Martin all to himself, sometimes he wants to see him in the cute stuff that he doesn't get to see him in at work anymore; a particular top with a nostalgic design, which looks better with boxers than with trousers. Or a nice embroidered jacket, with nothing underneath.
Sometimes he wants to see him in his smartest clothes, to act out a fantasy about shaping him up into the perfect assistant, and stripping things off layer by layer.
Sometimes he wants to dress Martin in the same kinds of anachronistic and melodramatic fashion that Jon picks out for himself, purely for the aesthetics.
Sometimes he wants to see him in something new and exciting; lingerie, leather, 'club wear' that he wouldn't let him actually wear to a club. Clothes bought as souvenirs during weekend trips together.
Sometimes they take everything off as soon as they get home, and agree on a pajamas and takeout evening, and why would Martin put on trousers again at a time like that?
(With so many options, there aren't many days when Jon doesn't voice a preference one way or another.)

Wendip Week 2022-On Four Wheels
Dipper and Wendy finds themselves scrambling to get ready for their wedding.
Written for @wendip-week
Dipper fiddled with his tie as the car drove down the street.
“Dipper, stop fiddling with your tie, you’re gonna ruin it,” barked Pacifica.
“I just want to make sure it looks good.”
“It does look good, you’re gonna ruin it.”
“Guys”, Mabel shouted from the driver's seat, “Can we not do this today?”
“Paz started it!”
“Dipper!”
“What, it’s my wedding.”
They pulled up to the church. Neither Dipper or Wendy were really that religious but it was a Gravity Falls institution. A variety of Pines’ and Corduroy’s were standing on the lawn.
“Hope Wendy is having a better time,” Mabel mumbled to herself as her brother argued with her girlfriend.
Wendy was not, in fact, having a better time. “Will you slow down!” Wendy shouted at her driver.
Stan’s voice came over the speaker in the limo. “Who’s the one who overslept on the night before her wedding?”
Tambry, who was sitting behind Wendy trying to do her hair, said, “He has a point you know.”
“This is why I didn’t make you my maid of honor.” Wendy went back to ironying her pants. Her shirt and coat hung up on a hook. The poor bride to be was in her underwear. “Never challenge anyone in my family to a drinking game.”
The limo made another sharp turn. “Stan, where the hell did you get a limo anyway?”
“Never ask how sausage is made, kid.”

This is our Oscar...
Immediately upon learning of the arrival of the lord of aesthetes, we had an appropriate costume made for our reporter by Mr. Frank Millet, and sent him to New York. Upon arriving at Mr. Wilde's hotel the reporter sent up his card, and an answer was brought that the poet desired some minutes to meditate upon the propriety of receiving an earthy visitor.
While waiting in the hotel parlor he was greatly discouraged by hearing a young lady say to a friend, "Ah, I'm so disappointed; he isn't a bit like Bunthorne."
After the reporter had waited about an hour, the valet returned and said that the poet was occupied with inspirations from the outer utterness, and could see no one. The reporter, without losing heart, again sent up his card, this time taking the precaution to write in one corner, "Of the inner brotherhood."
This had the desired effect, and he was soon ushered into the apartments of the lover of the beautiful. As he entered he was greeted by a "Ha! ha!" a strange sound that seemed like the smile of a tombstone. Seated before the fireplace he saw a tall, lean man of about twenty-six years. He wore a large Grosvenor of an ultramarine color, with a love of a sunflower embroidered on it; his morning coat was of purple corduroy, with the collar and cuffs adorned with pansies. In his hand he held a lily which ever and anon he would smell of, at which times a look of almost angelic serenity would o'er spread his countenance. At his side there stood a small table, with a dainty cup of tea and some cigarettes. Before seating himself our reporter wished to free his mind of a long existing burden, and innocently enough said, "Mr. Wilde -"
"I beg your indulgence, but please call me Oscar, 'tis not so earthy, but far more ecstatic."
"Well, Oscar, will you ease my aching soul and define aesthet -"
Before our reporter could finish, the "Idyllic" calmly rose, and with a voice calm enough to draw tears to the eye of a needle, said, "Lad, I did not thing that you came here to injure my sensitive feelings."
The reporter insisted that he had no such purpose, but as this was his first interview, and as all the other newspapers had asked the same question, he thought it was only the correct thing. This pacified the poet, and he said that AEstheticism is the cultivation of the AEsthetic, adding, "I trust this is clear."
Oh, perfectly, replied the reporter, as clear as the bursar's last report of Memorial.
At this remark Mr. Wilde's face assumed a look of weirdness, an expression of yearning after the infinite.
"By the way, Oscar, what do you think of America's institutions of learning as compared with those of other countries?"
"Ha! Ha! too fleshly, not sufficiently early English; but yet methinks it has been told that young men of Harvard are hopeful subjects, who may be etherealized and yet saved."
"Ah, yes," languidly responded the reporter, gradually falling into the spirit of the surrounding; "they too feel an indefinable longing for the indifferent, which the ephemeral mundanes would say is caused by indigestibility of the Memorial Carte de Jour.
"Ha! ha! yes, I grasp your conception, but then 'tis said that their aestheticism is purely pastoral."
"Yes, perhaps it is too Holme-ly."
Oscar must have heard of the great field, for at this remark his eyes gleamed with the fire of trembling delirium; his hair would certainly have stood on end, but the length refused this outrage to its gravity.
"Is it true, Oscar, that you helped to write 'Patience'?"
"Lad, 'tis but the story of my own life; as you see I am strangely beautiful, and 'tis pity for womankind alone that tempts me to wear this disfiguring garb."
"About your play" - but at this point the valet announced the presence in the parlor of some maidens who were just dying to see Oscar, and so, with many thanks for Oscar's kindness in talking to such a "mean, and commonplace thing," he took his leave.

It is Projecting Time so tonight I’m thinking about Martin, having to grow up too fast in order to take care of his mother and himself, and not getting to do a lot of the typical adolescent/young adult experimentation and self discovery.
Not getting to have phases or be carefree and a little rebellious and do questionable shit to his hair and clothes and not care that his mum hates it. Always having to be perfect. Not even having the time to be otherwise.
Martin, years later, an independent Proper Adult and finally starting to realize it a little! He always thought piercings looked cool, but his mum disapproved of them and he couldn’t afford it (or the risk of having to pay for medical care if they got infected). So after months of back and forth, he buys himself some clip-ons just to try it out. He meticulously checks and triple checks the institute policy on hair colors before assaulting his hair with bleach and blue box dye in his bathroom. It looks horrible. Pink looks better though and he keeps it for 10 months. He scours thrift shops for waistcoats or leather jackets or corduroy pants or giant sunglasses or anything that fits whatever look he’s trying out at the time. Buying mismatched prints for his walls and getting the ugliest fucking couch because it made him smile and splattering paint all over his kitchen table when he was having an art phase. Not quite having settled on a style or what actually works or what he wants but it’s just so freeing. Just to take those small things back for himself.
Not really going anywhere with this, just wanted to think about Martin getting to do things because he just fucking wants to and feeling great about it.
#this is 1000% projection#because i just bought some clip on lip piercings because life is short#and i relate VERY HARD to martin and how he grew up#and i know how it can cause you to miss out on a huge chunk of common milestones and also just. fun lol#not to mention growing up queer and how that can set you back if you're not out/don't realize it til later in life#i didn't get to start being myself til i was 30 and i'm putting that on mr blackwood tonight
