Flora’s Flowers | Cordelia & Flora
“Goodness, you have been busy!”
Her sitting room had been adorned with dozens of flower arrangements, each lovelier and more elegant than the last. Cordelia supposed she should have expected this, when she'd agreed to let Flora select some potentials.
“How am I to choose?” She asked, considering each one in turn, trying to supress the sudden overwhelming feeling that began to settle in. Cordelia had agreed to the marriage, wholeheartedly (it was the right thing to do for Valeria; it was the right thing to do for Margot) and yet it hadn’t seemed real, somehow, until now when the preparations were being made right before her eyes.
There would be time, later, to digest these feelings. For now, she would put on a smile for her friend. Before her father’s death, no one wondered what Cordelia Stafford was thinking or feeling, but since then she’d quickly learned that her emotions must be repressed if she was going to provide the proper support for her sister.
“I think you must have always been destined to plan my wedding,” Cordelia smiled, fingers tracing the petals of a rose as she inspected the arrangement closest to her, “You’ve more ideas for the flowers than I think I could have had for the entire ceremony!” She laughed, “And we both know that you were certainly destined to plan your brother’s, but who could have guessed that they would have been one and the same?”
Certainly not Cordelia, herself, who had always considered Edward to be insufferable (and even more so knowing how he was with Flora - he was capable of being a much better man and yet he had somehow gotten it into his head that no one else deserved even a small fraction of the consideration he gave his sister).

Waiting | George & Edward
George knew little of Edward Lowry, when compared with the other obstacles that were to be removed. All of his spies were focused on the more important tasks of watching over Nicholas Stafford, and reporting back to him on nearly everything the visiting King did. Protecting Nicholas and Marguerite were his top priorities, but that did not mean he was to neglect Edward Lowry and William Seymour.
So when he came across Edward Lowry at the Queen’s summer palace, waiting patiently for Cordelia Stafford to join him for a walk in the gardens, he did not waste the opportunity to speak with him.
His manner was friendly when he greeted him, bowing respectfully. “Allow me to offer my congratulations, my lord. I wish you and the princess every happiness.” He doubted very much that either of them would be much happy with the other, if the marriage were to take place, but he left that unsaid.
“Please, make yourself comfortable,” He said, gesturing towards the rest of the room, “Might I have some tea or refreshments brought down to you while you wait?”

Walk with Me | Alexander & Genevieve
The youngest Stafford was invisible.
Alexander Lambton had to be consistently reminded that she existed. As long as he didn’t make that err in public, he much preferred this than Cordelia, who seemed intent on being a thorn in his side. No matter, Alexander thought, he had plans for her. In the end, she would see she was no match for him.
“Princess,” He greeted with a respectful bow of the head in her direction. Alexander was thankful for her title, for he could not, for the life of him, remember her name. That did not concern him. He was ready to forget about her, entirely, once he had been married to her sister. Alexander already had plans to ship Cordelia and her husband off somewhere far away so neither of them need bother him again (and if either of them did, he was sure an unfortunate accident would be easy enough to arrange).
As for the youngest Stafford, he would be content for her to stay in the city, if she wished, but he had no intention of having either her or her husband come to the palace more than what was absolutely necessary. She was quiet and he was silly and they were both equally dull. Alexander only meant to have the best company fill his halls and his soon-to-be brothers and sisters did not meet these standards.
It was another rainy afternoon and, as the Queen was kept busy by her council, Alexander had the time to himself. He would have passed Genevieve in the halls without knowing who she was, had not his adviser whispered it to him moments before. He decided that today was a good as a time as ever to get to know her. The gesture would go a long way with her sister, he thought, especially as he was certain Cordelia was only whispering poison in Marguerite's ears (which, no doubt, stemmed from jealousy).
“I’m short of company today,” He announced, “And I think it’s time you and I were better acquainted. Very soon, I hope, I will be able to call you my sister. Come,” He offered her his arm, “I  will have refreshments brought to the parlor.” He gestured towards his adviser who nodded and went off to find a servant, “I hear a congratulations of your own are in order. Tell me, when is the happy day?” He asked. But what he really wanted to know was when she would be moving out.

“It’s All in the Game” by Tommy Edwards (Doomed Queen Anne)
“Locking Up My Heart” by the Marvelettes (Beware, Princess Elizabeth)
Best of the Bi-Month
The Hostage by Susan Wiggs (2000): In the chaos of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, backwoods trader Tom Silver kidnaps heiress Deborah Sinclair, hoping to make her industrialist father compensate the victims of his greed and negligence. Nothing goes according to plan, however, and these two people who should be enemies become anything but. I absolutely loved this book; the combination of slow-burn romance and action-packed non-romantic plot was perfect, and Deborah’s arc is just beautiful.
Worst of the Bi-Month
Bledding Sorrow by Marilyn Harris (1976): The cash-strapped heir of an ancient Yorkshire estate, his improperly medicated American wife, and a working-class coach driver are forced to reenact a Tudor-era tragedy, because of...reasons, I guess. I wasn’t too disappointed when I realized that this was Gothic horror instead of Gothic romance--I like scary stories, too--but this isn’t so much a novel as a long parade of pointlessly dismaying incidents. The characters are generally powerless to avoid their fates and, what’s more, they don’t have the opportunity or inclination to struggle very hard. Their helplessness might work if there were a compelling explanation for it, but Harris only makes a few vague suggestions (i.e., “Reincarnation?” or “House evil?”). Also, one of the supporting characters is such an egregiously offensive gay stereotype that he would probably make Jack Chick exclaim, “Whoa, tone it down!” The style was decent, though, and I had a few good laughs along the way.
Rest of the Bi-Month
I’ll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara (2018): In this posthumously published true-crime book, McNamara details a series of burglaries, rapes, and murders that plagued Sacramento and Southern California during the 1970s-1980s, believed by her and many others to be the work of one man, dubbed the Golden State Killer. McNamara does a wonderful job capturing the strange false tranquility of Californian suburbia circa 1980, and she presents the (often convoluted) facts clearly but never salaciously. The good taste and empathy of her style kind of undercuts any passages along the lines of “perhaps researching serial killers is deeply unsavory,” but that was my only issue with the book.
The Ask and the Answer by Patrick Ness (2009): In the first sequel to The Knife of Never Letting Go, young Todd Hewitt, having left behind the world he knew forever, deals with increasingly morally complex and traumatic situations. Meanwhile, his new friend, [redacted], wrestles with similarly thorny and upsetting issues. This is a worthy sequel to one of my favorite books I read this year. I missed the road narrative of the first installment, but the complicated ethical dilemmas and the ever-switching power dynamics very nearly made up for its loss.
Monsters of Men by Patrick Ness (2010): In the final book of Ness’s trilogy, [redacted]. This was the weakest installment, but only because of some fairly minor structural issues, such as some initial narrative choppiness, that I probably wouldn’t have noticed if the first two books hadn’t been so well-structured as well as thematically fascinating. The payoff is pretty fantastic, in any event. Also, Todd’s whole...thing with the Mayor is one of the most gloriously weird, fascinating relationships I’ve seen in a YA novel.
Someone to Trust by Mary Balogh (2018): In Regency England, twenty-six-year-old Lord Hodges decides to do the proper thing and get himself wed; however, his narcissistic mother, not content with the significant emotional damage she’s dealt him over the years, keeps interfering with his search because she’s worried he’ll marry someone who’s not hot enough by her standards. Meanwhile, his thirty-five-year-old BFF, Lady Overfield, has resolved to accept the suit of a staid but pleasant acquaintance...but something just doesn’t feel right. You know what does feel right, though? Waltzing and talking about deep shit with Lord Hodges...and the feeling is mutual!!! This isn’t the most action-packed romance, but it’s super-cute and I was 1000% sold on Lady Overfield’s subtle awesomeness.
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn (2012): Unhappily married and resignedly living in his Missouri hometown, Nick Dunne suddenly finds himself as the prime suspect in his wife’s disappearance and apparent murder. What the fuck is going on? I spent like five years of my life debating with myself whether to read this book, and I’m glad I did (long after its relevancy had peaked, of course). It’s easily the weakest of Flynn’s three novels--its sense of place isn’t as strong as Sharp Objects or Dark Places, although I understand that’s somewhat intentional, and neither main character works as a representation of an actual person--but it’s a propulsive read and it’s pretty damn funny.
The Diamond Slipper by Jane Feather (1997): Lady Cordelia Brandenburg travels with her BFF, a teenage Marie Antoinette, so they can get hitched to the Austrian ambassador to France and the Dauphin, respectively. Two problems: Cordelia’s new husband is a fucking monster, and she’s fallen in love with the grieving brother of the husband’s mysteriously dead first wife. This novel probably isn’t to everyone’s taste; it kind of zigzags between a semi-cutesy fairy-tale feel and depictions of horrific abuse, and the effect is somewhat jarring. I enjoyed its use of historical details, though, and I liked the heroine a lot.
Beware, Princess Elizabeth by Carolyn Meyer (2002): In this historical YA novel, Elizabeth I narrates several incidents in her life from cradle to throne, focusing on all the times that her half-sister Mary came super-close to having her executed. Although I found the structure of the novel somewhat choppy, I really liked the portrayal of Elizabeth’s complicated relationships with her pious, increasingly suspicious half-siblings, plus the plot had plenty of action.
Doomed Queen Anne by Carolyn Meyer (2001): In another installment of Meyer’s Young Royals series, Anne Boleyn explains her journey from awkward child to unconventional, controversial courtier to VICTIM OF TOTAL RAILROADING. This novel was even choppier than Beware, Princess Elizabeth, mostly because Elizabeth’s story is better-suited to the episodic plot structure, but I have to say I love this portrayal of Anne Boleyn as much as (if not more than) I did at twelve. Her motivations aren’t high-minded or altruistic, but she’s got feelings, damn it, and she has a right to fight against being treated like shit! Also, Meyer gives her a sixth finger on one hand, which was probably not the case historically, but it’s cool that Anne is portrayed sympathetically while also having a body that’s stigmatized by society.
Trapped at the Altar by Jane Feather (2014): In the early 1680s, Catholic Lady Ariadne Daunt and Protestant Sir Ivor Chalfont live in Daunt Valley, a makeshift community of loosely related lawless aristocrats who lost their lands in the English Civil War. Ariadne and Ivor are force to wed by the community “elders,” who hope to send them to the royal court as a religiously flexible power couple. This already-tense situation is made more awkward by the fact that Ariadne is in love with another man, while Ivor is in love with Ariadne. This novel is part of a small subset of romances that would be better as historical fiction. I loved the unique (albeit nightmarish) setting of Daunt Valley, the exciting journey to London, and the well-portrayed court intrigue. I even quite liked Ariadne. However, Ivor was such a shit. Ariadne is upfront with him about her love for another, but, because Ivor “loves” her, he acts like she’s morally obligated to go along with the whole thing. He never really forgives her for not being a virgin on their wedding night, and his reaction when he finds out she’s been using birth control is bloodcurdling. Also, Feather throws away an interesting dynamic where Ariadne has genuine feelings for two complex men in favor of making Ivor’s rival a creepy stalker (but also an embarrassingly ineffectual sissy).
Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow by Jessica Day George (2008): A  nameless Norwegian girl who can talk to animals agrees to live with an enchanted polar bear for one year in exchange for her family’s deliverance from poverty, secretly hoping to find the answer to her beloved brother’s sadness as well. She finds herself way in over her head, though, with a curse that goes back centuries or longer. I enjoyed this retelling of “East of the Sun, West of the Moon,” and I thought a lot of the concepts were really clever (hint: this is neither the first girl nor the first polar bear). In execution, though, I didn’t like it as much as Edith Pattou’s retelling, East, which has a stronger sense of place and better-developed minor characters.
Storm by Donna Jo Napoli (2014): Sebah, a sixteen-year-old Canaanite girl, loses her home, her family, and her entire way of life in a sudden deluge that drowns the whole world...almost. After weeks of surviving in trees and on rafts, she manages to stow away on Noah’s Ark, where she rooms with some bonobos and learns way too much about Ham’s marital problems. I thought this was a very creative book with some delightfully weird earthiness, but it becomes somewhat static once Sebah boards the ark and meets a character who kills too much of the tension.
At the Queen’s Summons by Susan Wiggs (2009 update of 1995 original): Pippa, a street performer in Elizabethan England, claims the patronage of Aidan O Donoghue, a minor Irish king, in order to save herself from arrest. Aidan, a goodhearted fellow, goes along with it. This was a pleasant story, but I can remember almost nothing about it. I love Susan Wiggs, but her Tudor Rose trilogy is kind of a snore.

Alcott Readathon 2018: Diana and Persis (1878)
Chapter 1: A Pair of Friends It says friends but I’m shipping the hell out of them. Diana, 28, is a sculptor and partly inspired by Harriet Hosmer, according to Sarah Elbert’s introduction. Percy, 25, is a painter and her mixture of fun-loving and artistic dedication resembles May Alcott. Percy’s only family is her grandmother, while Diana lives alone, “denying herself the pleasures of youth, the honors of sex and beauty, the joys of love, the solaces of home.”
Percy comes to tell Diana that one, she’s rejected her suitor, and two, she’s leaving in a week to study in Paris then Rome. Diana heartily approves of both items. Percy shows her a painting of a lark flying in the sky and Diana says “it is very good!” Grandmother thought the lark should have a nest for a home. Diana disagrees, liking that the bird “does not stoop to fill gaping beaks with worms.” The symbolism needs no explanation.
In Percy’s opinion Frenchman can draw but have no eye for color, while she is good at color but bad at drawing. “I so much admire color, strength and stature in both men and women,” she says. Harold, they’re queer.
They cry and hug as Percy boards her ship.
Chapter 2: Letters Sept – Percy attends classes at K’s studio for women, which costs more than J’s school for both sexes but is more pleasant. She boards with Anna and Cordelia, a pair of cousins, as May roomed with sisters Kate and Rosa Peckham. Apparently there are 40,000 art students in France.
Nov – The women are enraged over a letter in the newspaper calling out J’s students for “unsexing” themselves. The idea being that women shouldn’t draw from nude models, particularly not in the same room as the men artists. Percy claims that the presence of the women creates “a purer atmosphere.” Okay.
“We are twitted with getting no medals at the Salon,” she writes. “How can we when hitherto we were not allowed to study at the life schools yet expected to do as well in a third of the time and with half the help men have?”
She befriends Miss Cassal, and older woman, a reference to Mary Cassatt. Percy and Miss Cassal want to start their own school.
Diana asked her about clothes and she responds that she doesn’t think about them one bit. She uses all her money on lessons. Given that Diana doesn’t seem to care much about clothes, I think she asked because she knows Percy cared more.
Dec – A black man models for the class; two American Southerners are “rather scornful” of him and Percy gives them a lecture.
They cook a turkey for Christmas and their friend Durant sends a pie.
Mar – Percy dashes off a still life at home one day and shows it to the master. He tells her to send it to the salon. WTF? she thinks. Anna paints Percy’s portrait.
April – The Salon accepts both, two of 2,000 chosen out of 8,500 submitted. Now I’m even more impressed at May. Percy is still confused why people think “that ordinary little thing” is so great. After visiting the Salon display she decides the painting’s simplicity causes the praise.
Chapter 3: Puck Diana visits the Pincian Hill in Rome, feeling homesick and thinking of Percy, married now and too busy for friendship. A little boy mistakes her for his aunt and she shows him her sketchbook. His papa is Antony Stafford the sculptor, a name she recognizes. Nino runs off with the book and Antony returns it.
Diana waits for him to visit, wanting his opinion on the statue of Saul. After a week she assumes he forgot, then Nino arrives with flowers, saying he was ill. Antony is very charmed by the sight of Diana playing with his son.
Of the stature he says, “There is virile force in this, accuracy as well as passion – in short, genius.” He offers to have it cast in marble. Her other project is a head of Nino. She adds wings to the shoulders to call it Puck.
Tumblr media
”Puck” by Harriet Hosmer. I’m still looking for a picture of Saul
Antony thinks to himself that Diana is like a man and a woman put together, and he doesn’t know which to admire most.
Chapter 4: At Home Percy writes that her daughter is born, so Diana visits her in Paris. Did Percy skip Rome? It doesn’t say.
August Muller, a Swiss man, plays the violin while Percy sketches baby Diana. Like Bhaer, he uses thee and thy.
“How well and glad and beautiful you look, my Percy,” says Diana. She forgives August for taking her friend away. Percy claims motherhood has hardly interrupted her art, but Diana notes that her paints look dry.
They have lunch – “salad and fruit, hot coffee and delectable rolls and a pot of butter still in its grape leaf fresh from the dairy.” (I include this because I like food history.) And wine, although Percy says it’s kept for special occasions.
Fanchette the maid puts baby to bed and they watch the sunset from the chateau ruins. Diana tells them she wants to visit Switzerland and then Rome. Instead of love she seeks fame. August insists that women can have both – “A man expects them, achieves them, why is not a woman’s life to be as full and free as his?”
Diana isn’t convinced, noting that Percy brought her knitting to the sunset.
At home, August plays from Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Percy thinks about what to have for breakfast while Diana wonders if a musician husband might make her happy.
“So they went merrily to bed, and the rivals shook hands with new cordiality as they said ‘Good Night!’”
And that’s where it ends. It is a shame that it’s unfinished – both because I want to read the rest and because May’s death is presumably what led LMA to abandon it. Will Diana fall in love with Antony or will she remain single? I could see either ending.

Escape | Cordelia & Ben
Cordelia wandered the dim halls of the library, absentmindedly tracing the her fingers across the spines as she went. If you were to ask her, she would have told you that she was eagerly exploring her uncle’s collection of books but, in truth she was too distracted to pay them much attention and had only used it as an excuse to temporarily escape the present company.
It was a small party: Clarence had extended an invitation to the Staffords and their royal guest, but Margot was unable to attend (which meant Cordelia and Genevieve had been forced to share a carriage with Alexander Lambton alone en route. Cordelia was dreading the trip home when he had had several glasses of brandy in him).
She’d hoped to at least enjoy her cousins’ company, but neither Anna nor Charles were there (Anna having caught a cold and Charles having had a previous engagement with Henry Craven) which left Rose as only other reasonable person in the room besides her own sister. Cordelia didn’t wish to interrupt their private conversation nor did she wish to continue listening to Howard, Alexander, and Clarence say another word on anything and so ... here she was.
Luckily, no one seemed too concerned that she was off elsewhere and no one had come looking for her. She’d assumed that she was alone but when she turned the corner, she collided with someone else and, all of a sudden, a wave of cold water and ice rushed over. Cordelia gasped, tightening from the shock of the sudden and unexpected cold. She looked up to find the source and saw that an awkward and rather confused looking servant had been the culprit.
He stood before her, speechless and unmoving, clutching a now empty pitcher of water in his hands. Had it been wine, she might have scolded him for his carelessly, but it was only water (it would dry) and, what’s more, it gave her an excuse to delay her return. She wanted to laugh when she realized that standing here, dripping wet in the dead of winter, was far preferable than most of the company she had left behind.
“You’d better be thankful it was me you spilled water on and not one of your mater’s other guests,” She teased, eyeing him, wondering how someone like this had managed to gain employment for her uncle, at all. “What are you doing here?” She asked - he was most likely wanted in the dining room as preparations were being made for dinner. “Are you lost?” She paused, smiling mischievously “Or are you hiding, too?”

our baby
IF THEY HAD A KID MEME | NOT-ACCEPTING | @strawpolls
Name: Cordelia ‘Corie’ Evelyn Stafford
Gender: Female
General Appearance:  Tall, slender and fair, Corie undeniably favours her mother’s looks. Her natural hair colour is a light brown, however, when old enough she often lightens it with highlights. Corie was always a pretty child, with a rather mature look to her countenance, she never really went through that ‘baby-face’ phase. As she grew up, she developed into quite the stunner; she has the build and the looks to model if she wanted to.
Personality: Corie has always been rather laid back, which was a benefit to her parents given all the back and forth they do from the UK to the US. She is kind and compassionate, especially when it comes to animals - she adores dogs and even volunteers at the local animal shelter in London. She isn’t the most academic of pupils, not because she isn’t intelligent - she is - it’s more to do with the fact that she doesn’t apply herself. She is very theatrical and has a natural humour to her that make her an extremely popular girl at school.
Special Talents: She has a talent for the theatre; Corie has been involved with various stage schools and drama clubs from being very young and honestly, she is really quite talented. Along with performing in local productions, she was always putting on shows with her friends, during the summer holidays they would spend the days rehearsing sketches or dances before performing in front of their families.
Who they like better: Both Gin and Curt are, quite frankly, wrapped around her little finger and Corie is fully aware of this. She doesn’t really exploit this, however, considering how inconvenient their situation is, she is really mature about it. Since she spends more time with Gin, Corie and Curt do have a rather special bond - she’s a daddy’s girl, there can be no denying that.
Who they take after more: Corie is very similar to Curt in terms of personality and Gin is thankful about that; she can only imagine how resentful the kid would have become had she taken after her more. Corie is a genuinely good person with a capacity for compassion that often surprises Gin but never fails to make her proud.
Personal Head canon: From a young age Corie became aware how fortunate she was in regards to the friendship and unity between her mum and dad. Of course, she had always wished that they were together like a proper mum and dad, however, she has always been aware how special their family was. Whilst her friend’s parents were going through bitter divorces refusing to speak to one another, Gin and Curt always made sure that the three of them did everything together; summer vacations, Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving etc...they were always together and the memories warranted by that are priceless to Corie.
