Clearwater, BC (No. 7)
In the west, the highway begins at Masset, British Columbia, on Haida Gwaii, heading south along Graham Island for 101 km (63 mi) to Skidegate. It then connects via a 172 km (107 mi) ferry route to Prince Rupert, then passes southeastward for 724 km (450 mi) through to Prince George, before travelling another 268 km (167 mi) eastward through to Tête Jaune Cache.
A spur of the Yellowhead Highway, Highway 5, also known as the Southern Yellowhead Highway, connects the main highway at Tête Jaune Cache midway between the Alberta-British Columbia border and Prince George. The highway continues past Kamloops before following the Coquihalla Highway to Hope. Unlike Highway 16, route 5 is not branded as being part of the Trans-Canada system and retains the original Yellowhead signage (whereas Highway 16 uses the Trans-Canada Highway logo).

Americana Artist Emmett Jerome Shares Upbeat Homage to the Road on “Coquihalla Prayer”
Tumblr media
Emmett Jerome is a breed of musician not often encountered in this day and age. Raised on the blues, educated on country and cutting his teeth in Canada’s underground rock scene, he's always taken the road less traveled to get where he wants to go. Making his recording debut earlier this year with “Goodbye Trouble,” the 24-year-old Alberta native has quickly proven himself to be one of the most exciting young musicians to emerge from Western Canada in recent years.
Jerome’s debut EP, Rocky Mountain Son, will be out on September 18th via 604/Light Organ Records. He’s sharing his vintage-sounding new single, “Coquihalla Prayer,” in anticipation of its release. The song pays homage to the culture of working and traveling out in this part of the country. The Coquihalla Pass in particular is a nasty stretch of highway very familiar not only to truckers but to musicians, as well, as both often find themselves navigating dangerous highways throughout their career.
“Almost all the songs on this EP are traveling tales taken from a period in my life where I was spending a lot of time on the open road,” Jerome explains. “The adventure, loneliness, and hard work that went into this period come out in the music, and this includes ‘Coquihalla Prayer.’”

The Coquihalla Highway is also known as British Columbia Highway 5, a former (paid off) toll freeway between Hope and Kamloops, and a de facto replacement of the two lane (un-twinned) Trans-Canada Highway.

Snowfall warnings issued as 'bitterly cold' temperatures expected across B.C. this weekend
Environment Canada issued a range of special weather statements and weather warnings across British Columbia on Saturday, warning of unseasonably cold temperatures and snowfall. A snowfall warning for Metro Vancouver and Howe Sound said up to 10 centimeters of snow could fall in the region, with up to 25 centimeters in the Fraser Valley.
The amounts were an increase from forecasts made in special weather statements earlier on Saturday.
A special weather statement issued for Whistler also warned of periods of snow throughout the weekend.
There are Arctic outflow warnings in place across the Central and North Coasts, including inland sections, with wind chill expected to make it feel like –20 C in those regions. Wind gusts could reach up to 80 km/h along the coast. In the Fraser Valley and Fraser Canyon in southwest B.C., light snow is expected to intensify later Saturday afternoon. Around 15 centimeters of snow is expected to accumulate by Sunday afternoon.
There is also a winter storm warning in place for the Coquihalla Highway between Hope and Merritt, B.C., as well as special weather statements for the Lower Mainland and across northern B.C.
"If it's outside, dress warmly in layers and stay dry." "Cover as much exposed skin as possible to avoid frostbite," reads a statement from the forecaster.
"Be prepared for unusually cold temperatures and strong winds." An Arctic front will bring unseasonably cold temperatures to the region starting Sunday. Wind chill values of -15 degrees Celsius in Metro Vancouver and -20 degrees Celsius in the Fraser Valley and Sea to Sky regions are possible.
The system will bring up to 20 centimeters of snow to the recently repaired Coquihalla Highway, according to the forecaster.
The province said drivers on the South Coast should stay off the road in poor conditions. If they must travel, they should pack an emergency kit and make sure their vehicle has proper snow tires. TransLink, the regional transit authority, stated that they were proactively de-icing SkyTrain tracks and bus trolley wires in preparation for the cold snap and that they were prepared to implement snow shuttle services if conditions became particularly bad.
A series of special weather statements on Friday said Arctic air, blasting wind, and plummeting temperatures would settle over the far north and stick around for several days. The coldest temperatures are likely to be felt Monday through Wednesday, according to meteorologist Derek Lee.
Lee said the area from Peace Region to Fort Nelson could see overnight lows below –40 C. Overnight lows of -35 C are possible in Prince George and the Cariboo. The weather statements cover Haines Road, Atlin, Teslin, Cassiar Mountains, Dease Lake, Watson Lake, Peace River, Williston, Muncho Lake Park, and Fort Nelson in the far north.

The Coquihalla Highway (Highway 5) is set to reopen to commercial traffic and inter-city buses on Dec. 20, a month after it was significantly damaged by floods and mudslides.
Transportation Minister Rob Fleming made the announcement at a news conference on Wednesday.
He said the reopening was "one of the most remarkable engineering feats in recent memory in the province of British Columbia."

Flooding and mudslides had closed most routes between the coast and BC Interior over the past 24 hours, but the back route through Whistler on Hwy 99 remained open this morning.
That changed shortly after 11 am, when DriveBC reported that a mudslide 42 kilometres south of Lillooet had shut down Hwy 99 as well.
The only way to drive between the coast and the rest of Canada at this time is through the United States.
However, Washington is also seeing highway closures due to the inclement weather and residents would need a COVID-19 test to re-enter Canada.

Summit Lake Pass, BC
The region [British Columbia Interior], which includes the Interior Plateau as well as various mountain ranges and the valleys between them, comprises everything inland from the Coast Mountains and reaching east to the Rocky Mountains and, in the northeast, British Columbia's sector of the Prairies, the Peace River Block. "Interior" is usually and properly capitalized but turns up in lower-case in various books and magazines. The non-coastal areas of the province are considered to be "in the Interior", although the sparsely populated regions of its northern half are usually referred to only as "the North".
The town of Hope, at the eastern end of the Fraser Valley and at the foot of the Fraser Canyon, is often considered the "Gateway to the Interior" and bears an entrance arch to that effect, though in practical terms the Interior does not begin until somewhere between Yale and Boston Bar, in the Fraser Canyon, or until the summits of the Coquihalla and Allison Passes. The boundary between "the Coast" and "the Interior" along the Highway 99 corridor is nominally between Whistler and Pemberton, as Pemberton is often described as being in the Interior, but from the inland perspective it is often seen as part of the Coast because of its wetter climate and close ties to the Lower Mainland.
There are many subregions within the Interior, some regions in their own right, and although there are no precise definitions, it is often broken up informally as the Northern Interior, the Central Interior, the Southern Interior, the Northeast Interior and Southeast Interior, and these names often appear in non-governmental organizations and company names as well as in government administrative districts and ministerial regions, and in weather reports.

Going All In on Your Music Career
Going All In on Your Music Career
What backdoors have you yet to close? What escape hatches have you left open? What backup plans are you keeping in play just in case things don’t go well in your music career? I’m all for being practical. I’ve benefited greatly from prioritizing work that was the meeting place of what I was good at, what I enjoyed, and what I could get paid for. And it’s good to identify “what if” scenarios too.…
