The Lower East Adams Lake wildfire, burning 21 kilometres north of Chase, B.C., on the east side of Adams Lake, more than doubled is size in the space of a few hours on Saturday.

As of 9:30 p.m. Saturday, the size of the wildfire was listed at 724 hectares, compared to 320 hectares at around 3 p.m. the same day.

The Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) says the wildfire continues to grow, primarily towards the north flank, which is away from populated areas under evacuation alert.

There are still 92 properties in the CSRD on evacuation alert, as well as one property in the Thompson Nicola Regional District and properties in the jurisdiction of the Adams Lake Indian Band.

Prior to European settlement, the area that is now occupied by the village was occupied by the Okelhs First Nations. They were eventually superseded by the Chilcotins in the 1870s.

The fur trade brought the earliest settlers to the area. The Overlanders expedition to the Cariboo goldfields rafted down the North Thompson River in 1862. When they first arrived at the mouth of the Clearwater River, they named it for its distinct clarity compared to the relatively muddy waters of the North Thompson. Forests Minister Doug Donaldson said the initial preservation is the start of a larger program to preserve old-growth forests, more than half of which are already protected on the B.C. coast. The 54 trees were selected from the University of B.C.’s big tree registry, which lists 347 trees that are on either private or Crown land and could be harvested under current regulations.
