hey jbird, hope your day is going well! calling back to that post you made about occultists using steel as iron - where would you, as a blacksmith, recommend sourcing iron for workings? i have been looking but thought i would ask your opinion, as i respect it. i am also unsure where to source proper metals for planetary workings (i live very remotely and shipping is often expensive, if not impossible for me). thanks a million!
I love this question but I'm gonna rant.
As to the planetary metals question - some metals are easier to get than others. Idk what kindve working you're aiming for, or what kind of tools you have available to process them, but honestly, other than copper sheet or pugs of tin, your best bet is probably online or local fabrication places.
The iron-vs-steel debate, has been circling my head for quite a while now, and I'm afraid I don't really have a very accessible answer other than possibly scrapyards - iron metal, as it would have been known even just 100 years ago, has been very quietly replaced by mild steel for most applications - most iron ore ends up processed into steels now, and short of cast iron, it's getting difficult to find iron metal. Most items sold as wrought iron now, are blackened steel. Another trouble is that iron metal itself is smelted to a variety of use cases and the resulting alloys (all iron metals are alloys of iron, after all - even steel) are suited to different use cases. You could, conceivably, go at some cast iron with an angle grinder, but due to its makeup, cast iron melts at a lower temperature than wrought iron and isn't directly ideal for forging processes without intermediate processing.
Another problem is that most every item occult people recommend as a source of "Really Real Iron" is itself now manufactured from mild carbon steel. Railroad spikes, square cut nails, horse shoes - all these are steel, generally. (save for horseshoes which are now sometimes made of aluminum) and not even very good steel, outside of their intended uses. Concrete rebar is another item, often cited to be iron, but it isn't, at least not today - it's steel. Usually recycled.
Another problem is that "Iron metal" refers collectively to non-steel alloys of iron, and each are suited to different use cases - they vary mostly by carbon content and percentage of slag and inclusions but even this seemingly small amount of variety results in iron running a wide gamut of physical properties - its no wonder iron has been considered sacred when you start to consider the incredible array of behaviors that can be coaxed out of it. To use the same example as before, cast iron becomes a flowable, predictable liquid at temperatures much lower than wrought iron or steel, and is chosen for its ability to easily flow into mold cavities - whereas wrought iron becomes shapeable with a hammer. For this, we need to keep in mind that statements people take for granted, such as one of my least favorite schulke-isms, "square iron nails, forged in the ancient way" are more or less an anachronism now - most square post nails, if not specifically hand forged, specifically from wrought iron - will have been pressed from sheet steel. It irks me, a little bit, reading someone recommend X item, "they're made from pure iron!" because... Not in at least a hundred years, now. Does that mean my stainless refrigerator is an antipersonel device against Fae? Or Does the addition of chromium make them go "oh, ohkay, I thought that was iron, we're good." or are the supposed inhuman origins of metalwork itself enough that all elemental iron-bearing items are Fae repellent? Or is the occult community unnecessarily simplifying the results of millennia of humanities experiments in metallurgy for the sake of aesthetics? We know that 2 millennia ago, people in India were manufacturing steel - we know that in both medieval European weaponry and antique Japanese swords, steel would've been laboriously produced for the manufacture of blades, and iron would have been used where the more brittle metal could serve - my point, is that the "ancients" knew the difference between iron and steel, if they said "iron", they likely meant iron, and I would very much like my copy of green mysteries now.
Imo, whether this distinction genuinely matters is a big question and I figure the answer must vary by use case. Physically, the two materials have very different properties. steel nails will still rust, unless galvanized or nickel finished, and thus still exhibit Martian qualities - I don't know how the Fae feel about steel, as opposed to "Really Real Iron"; that ain't my lane. Being that both are iron alloys I would *hope* steel would be no different, but, again, not my lane, I have no idea. I think it must matter to some degree - the black pullet recommends rings of steel, specifically. Again, the "ancients" would've known the difference - yet now people pretend the distinction doesn't exist, usually, because "iron" just sounds cooler.
I wish I had a better suggestion, but What *I* ended up doing was finding a manufacturer of wrought iron and dropping 3 figures to have them ship a bunch to my to my house. - if you can keep the lengths down, you can usually keep the shipping itself around 40 dollars in the US for ground shipping. Longer pieces cost more to ship. I won't know if it's genuine till it gets here, but if it isn't, that supplier gets crossed off the list, and if it is genuine, I'm making myself bangles. That's the trouble with rare materials, though - some pipework is still made of malleable iron. (you'd need to be certain as black steel pipe is also a thing) but if all you need is an iron amulet or something to that effect, you could conceivably cut up iron pipe.
