So I’ve had some Thoughts about Coppélia et Swanilda by Hana Chatani
Recently, an old professor of mine introduced me to the Shortbox Comics Fair, a digital comics fair with independent comics from all over the world. I had been complaining to him about wanting to expand out. I took his recommendation and instantly a few things caught my eye, particularly Hana Chatani’s Coppélia et Swanilda.
Some of my most precious childhood memories are of going to the ballet with my grandmother, so I was familiar with Coppélia’s story. It ended up in my cart and I bought it and read it and well, here we are now? As a typical rule in writing these I do try to avoid spoilers as well, I generally want people to read and try things out for themselves. And I doubly recommend that for any independent work. With that, I’m gonna be extra careful about spoilers for Chatani’s work, as I did enjoy it a lot and would recommend people buy it to try it out for themselves. Knowledge of Coppélia I don’t think is necessary to enjoy the story, but Chatani put a lot of nice little touch in for those who know ballet.
I find Chatani’s art to be very cute, and it lends itself really well to the fairytale sort of aesthetic. But it’s not so limited that it cut any expression of emotion away from the characters. Partially with Franz and Swanilda’s dance, you really get a sense of her desperation. Part of this effect comes from the key focus on motions. A lot of the comic is filled with movement, which for a story from a ballet is an enjoyable translation from between the mediums. It has been a while since I’ve seen a production, but I’m curious to see if certain movies from a production were directly referenced. But with that movement it also means when the comic is still, like in the scene with Franz and Coppélia, it creates a sense of unease and tension.
On that line, Chatani doesn’t directly follow Coppélia’s storyline, and I actually really enjoyed the twist it decided to go for. While avoiding spoilers, the comics really builds the bond between Swanilda and her friends. It also takes Coppélius in a different, more sympathetic turn. The story does sort of leave me wanting more, in both a good and bad way. As the story feels like it wants to continue, but is cut off, so it’s a little unsatisfactory in that way. Not that I would have liked the original ending of the ballet, I actually do like this exploration of the story, but doesn’t really end where I am fully satisfied. Now, all stories don’t need a satisfying ending, but I’m not fully convinced that the tone of this story was able to pull that mood off. Given Swanilda’s already wavering at the start and her emotions seem to still be wavering at the end. Yes, she ends with a goodbye and pretty soundly puts here feelings towards Franz away, but it doesn’t totally hit that point of closure for me.
Despite that, I still recommend the story. Personally, I feel a bit like I’m nitpicking a fine story that uses both its writing and art well, and ultimately this is something I’m glad I bought. It’s a nice little twist on a classic story, and it’s well told. It’s 67 pages, and I received both an English version and a Japanese version. It is done in a manga styling with it being in black and white with reading from right to left. Again, I recommend it or just looking around the Shortbox Comics Fair to see is there is something else for the personal taste.

Hi, I have a question concerning the Ballet Coppélia.
See my mom recorded on VHS a version that's from around the 90's - early 2000 (nothing later than 2001) of it but I watched it too much and it's been dead for like a decade so I can't remember which version it is.
The one thing I can remember vividly is a scene in the village that's basically dunked in yellow (especially the costumes of the main ballerinas. Swanhilda might still be in red tho ?). Might have been the lighting tho. Lots of actual mannequin parts thrown around too which is weirdly not that common.
I tried watching different versions on YT but I only see a dash of yellow in them which I don't vibe with so I'm pretty sure they aren't the version of Coppelia I remember. I think it was a russian company but I can't be sure.
So if someone has any information on this I'm all ears.

I’ve been thinking about cyberpunk fairytale/literary/general story au and
Pinocchio
Android, boom, easy
Handmade or refurbished, fully devoid of corporation scrap pieces.
As a result, doesn’t look convincingly human; people can tell he’s an android immediately
Homemade, super-developed A.I. software — more advanced than anything on the market (and maybe even ones developed in private..)
Coppélia
Predecessor to Pinocchio
Hyper-realistic; most people legitimately think she is human and assume her limited behaviour/personality/etc. is due to being in a bit of debt with a brain implant.
The super-developed A.I software couldn’t be added to her without screwing up her whole being, so Pinocchio was made.
Cinderella
Scrapelle? Idk names
Makes her own mods from what she can get her hands on
Planned to go to high(er) class event w/ mods bought with savings, relative offered to install software, purposefully downloaded viruses to destroy the mods.
Caused malfunctions in most, the most serious being an earpiece; she is deaf in her right ear
Fairy Godmother equivalent (AuntiVirus, still happy with it) illegally gets some expensive software onto her homemade mods so she fits in a bit more, but only for a limited time.
Any longer and the companies would notice and hunt her down.
Guess which ear the warning alarm went off in
When she flees, her retractable high-heels initiate a security procedure to clamp around her feet; she’s able to break one off, leaving it in rather large pieces outside the venue, but the other crushes her foot once she’s a fair distance from the event.
Maybe the event’s a mod convention
Pessimistic idea: Prince equivalent uses the event to find up-and-coming developers, help develop their work, steal it for himself, and have the creator silenced in some way (others being other iterations of the story: Catskin had animal based mods, like exotics; Rushen Coatie focussed on plant-like ones; Rhodopis does… sandals..?)

“The Sandman” (E.T.A. Hoffmann) ~ “The fear of words”
"The Sandman" is a terrifying story. The main character, Nathanael, grew up hearing terrifying stories since he was a child. He asked his nurse, ``What is the Sandman?'' and she answered, ``He is a terrible man, who comes to the children when they are having trouble sleeping and puts a handful of sand in their eyeballs. and the eyeballs will pop out, all bloody, and he will put them in a bag and carry them to his children to eat on a half-moon night.''
Nathanael was horrified when he heard this story. Because every night, when it was time for Nathanael to go to bed, he felt the presence of a visitor creaking on the stairs. It was Coppelius, a lawyer, who came to visit Nathanael's father. Still, one night, during Coppelius' visit, his father was killed in an explosion, and after that, Coppelius stopped coming and interest in the sandman disappeared.
Nathanael falls in love with a gorgeous woman. He catches a glimpse of the woman through a telescope he bought for a large sum of money from a barometer salesman named Coppola. The woman, Olympia, was a beautiful girl with particularly beautiful eyes, but she was an elaborate doll made by a person named Professor Spallangiani.
Coppelius and Spallangiani fight over this Olympia, the doll is torn to pieces, and her eyes are thrown at Nathanael. At this point, Nathanael goes insane due to the double shock of his long-held memory of the Sandman and the fact that the woman he loved was a doll.
“Fui--hui--ring of fire--ring of fire--turn the ring of fire, go round and round--it's fun--interesting!--Wood doll, hui, beautiful, cute doll, Go round and round...'' (He tries to strangle Professor Spallangiani, but he is captured and put in a mental hospital.)
After Nathanael is discharged from the asylum, he encounters Coppelius again, and this time he throws himself from a great height, causing his head to collapse and die. "Ah! Beautiful eyes—clean eyes," he shrieked. The word "Coppela" in Latin means "eye socket: the hollow in the skull that contains the eyes," and it is a name that is closely related to the Sandman.

Continue reading Untitled

Rook Ballet Headcanons!
Now that we know Rook has CANONICALLY started taking ballet lessons, these are some thoughts I have as to some of his possible preferences with it! While I know that he's still learning the basics, if he were to continue further, he would probably get quite good!
He already has some of the necessary core and upper-body strength for ballet, and I'm sure that the cardio aspect wouldn't be a huge challenge for him, either. However, he stated in his Platinum Jacket vignette that he has struggled some with balance and ankle stability, so for the most part, he would be primarily working to strengthen his leg muscles - specifically those of the hip, thigh, and ankle - and increasing overall flexibility. With that work, in combination with the poise and grace he already has in his movements, he could become a fantastic danseur!
Now, for his preferences...
To begin, his uniform: I see Rook as likely preferring tights rather than shorts, and a leotard rather than a shirt. He'd also likely choose a cap or short sleeve over a tank, at least for the most part. and he seems as if he'd be quite drawn to a zip-front (or high-neck) leotard.
He'd also prefer grey canvas ballet slippers, grey tights, and a white leotard, though there's a chance he'd wear black slippers and tights instead.
For reference, Rook's preferred dancewear would be somewhat like this:
or perhaps this:
He'd also need to tie his hair back, of course, as he does for P.E., Beanfest, etc. (It would be wise for him to pin back the loose strands, too... though chances are, he wouldn't do that, except for recitals.)
Now, for the steps, I've added in some video examples, in case you aren't familiar with ballet terminology.
I'll begin with what Rook may struggle with, at least at first. Based on his main problem areas (ankle stability and balance), any sort of step which involves being en relevé ("on rise" on ones' toes) would be somewhat difficult, as well as some centre work. Grand pliés and développés in the centre would likely be hard for him when he first begins, until he has toned the proper muscles. And for a similar reason, he may struggle with turns, especially fouettés, pirouettes, and chaînés. Rook may dislike chaînés especially, as even with proper spotting technique, they can be quite disorienting.
However, he'd LOVE things like cabrioles, Italian pas de chat (in this video, alternating with glissés), saut de Basque, jeté en tournant, tour jeté, and similar steps. They each have a certain... sensation about them; when performed, these steps give a feeling of almost soaring through the air. He'd find them to be beautiful, and powerful to both perform and watch.
Rook would also adore the fluidity of pas de valse / balancé, and have a lot of fun with exercises which feature them!
he'd also love dancing any sort of pas de deux, even if he didn't have much chance to do it. being able to feel the interplay and balance between him and his partner, and build that sense of trust would be fantastically beautiful to him, possibly even more than watching a pas de deux.
There are likely a number of other steps and various variations (perhaps the Coppélia Act I Franz variation, for example?) which Rook would find to be enjoyable during his time taking ballet. And - should he continue with dance - Rook may just find another form of art he falls in love with!
#twst#twisted wonderland#rook hunt#twst rook#rook platinum jacket#holy crow... my ballet background was REAWAKENED by that vignette#and did I heavily insert my own preferences into this post?#...no#(yes)#although I do honestly think that these would be the steps that Rook would struggle with and the steps he'd enjoy#also... that Coppélia variation is maybe my favourite one - it has most of my favourite steps; plus it's from a fantastic ballet#mon beau chasseur ♡#non... mon beau danseur ♡#je t'adore ♡#je t'aime ♡#krenenbaker's :)#scheduling this to post in the morning because I finished writing this rather late :)
