Developed by Thomas “Gar” Gillies, founder of the Garnet Amplifier Company, the Herzog was built in collaboration with The Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive guitarist, Randy Bachman. A former violin player, Bachman loved the effect of a sustained hum sound, and often tried to mimic it on his guitar by plugging a small amp into a bigger amp, and cranking the volume. After repairing countless blown amps for Bachman, Gillies built him the tube pre-amp seen here. The creamy overdrive and sustained guitar tone produced by the Garnet Herzog went on to become the signature “Winnipeg sound” heard on tracks such as “American Woman” and “No Time”"

Scripted by comedian John Mulaney and starring Alexander Skarsgård as a very funny [Werner] Herzog analogue, “Rainer Wolz”, as both a young and old man, the big ridiculous satirical twist is the supposed documentation of filming not some sort of awards-y dramatic film but a very hokey three-camera 1980s CBS sitcom pilot called “Bachelor Nanny” [...] filmed for absolutely no reason high up on a remote and very dangerous wilderness mountaintop village somewhere in Siberia in the company of an Indigenous tribe.

Documentary about Werner Herzog.

After the interview snippets from various people during the opening I was briefly worried how this would turn out. But thankfully it then gets quickly more serious about Herzog. And often unexpectedly sentimental.

He's truly unique, one of a kind. But as can be seen in the doc, during filming of some of the iconic movies like Aguirre and Fitzcarraldo, he was also pretty unprepared and irresponsible.

It's interesting to hear from Herzog's brother. I also liked seeing Wim Wenders. The stories of their movies are vastly different. I wonder how a conversation between the two would go.

If you're familiar with Herzog's filmography, then I don't think you learn much new. But it's still an entertaining watch.

A Florida Legacy: Sam and Robbie Vickers’ transformational gift to the Harn Museum of Art

Here is the video on The Florida Art Collection, an extensive collection of Florida-themed paintings, drawings, and watercolors that includes many prominent American artists from the late 19th to the mid-20th centuries including paintings by such celebrated artists as Winslow Homer and John Singer Sargent gifted by Samuel and Roberta Vickers as the collection transitions from their North Florida home to the Harn Museum of Art.
