WHY IS THIS LIL GUY DIABOLICAL

Look at this lil guy. This smol man. This gentleman is the diabolical ironclad beetle- and it’s shell is so strong it can withstand being run over by a car! A CAR! He is indestructible. But- diabolical? I must disagree.

Beetles of the Ceratocanthinae subfamily (also known as pill scarab beetles) rely on a unique form of conglobation to conceal themselves. As the beetle tucks its head down and folds its legs up against its belly, the plates on its head, thorax, abdomen, and legs all come together to form a solid shield; the plates on its legs even have grooves and corresponding ridges that allow them to neatly interlock.

As this blog post explains:

Adult Ceratocanthinae are best known for their ability to conglobate: rolling into a nearly perfect ball. The elytra, pronotum, head, and all six tibiae interlock with each other by means of grooves and corresponding ridges, forming a tightly connected external surface. Many beetles take the form of a tight compact structure when threatened, however in Ceratocanthinae the tibiae of all six legs participate in forming the external hard surface of the sphere, unlike in other beetles.

The Ceratocanthinae subfamily contains many different genera/species, and they are all collectively known as pill scarabs. Many of them have a colorful, metallic appearance; they may be green, red, blue, brown, black, or multicolor.

love being the bug friend like yessss you saw a beetle and sent me a picture and yessss you ask me what kind of beetle it is and yessss you call me over when there's even the tiniest guy on the ground and yessss you ask me to pick up any bug on you/around you that's freaking u out. like lets gooo!!!!! hell yeah!!!!!!!! i love to see it!!!!!!!!! let's keep this going!!!!!!!!!!

Have you ever seen the magnificent rainbow scarab (Phanaeus vindex)? This colorful dung beetle can be found in parts of the eastern and central United States. While most dung beetles are dull shades of brown or gray, this species is one of a handful adorned in striking iridescent colors. Males also sport large horns on their heads! Like other dung beetles, this insect rolls dung into balls to incubate its young. It also digs dung-filled tunnels nearby to ensure that the newborn beetles will have enough to eat.

For some reason lately I've started thinking about beta!Wally and ordinary Wally.... I make headcannons and think about the difference between these two, even though they have the same appearance 🤨🤨🤨🥄 (my first attempts to draw a beta!Wally. two versions, because I'm undecided)

AND THEN HOWDY, BECAUSE I ADORE HIM..... YEAH (I'm still thinking about what I want him to look like in my artstyle—)
