Anime i’ve Watched
That begin with a S (Part 2)!
Yep this is how i’m going to bring over all the anime and manga i’ve watched and posted about on the old blog. It’s not so detailed but it will have to do. Anything new I watch or read from this point on will have their own posts.
Shimoneta to Iu Gainen ga Sonzai Shinai Taikutsu na Sekai:
Genres: Comedy, Ecchi, School
Synopsis: With the introduction of strict new morality laws, Japan has become a nation cleansed of all that is obscene and impure. By monitoring citizens using special devices worn around their necks, authorities have taken extreme measures to ensure that society remains chaste. In this world of sexual suppression, Tanukichi Okuma—son of an infamous terrorist who opposed the chastity laws—has just entered high school, offering his help to the student council in order to get close to president Anna Nishikinomiya, his childhood friend and crush. Little does he know that the vice president Ayame Kajou has a secret identity: Blue Snow, a masked criminal dedicated to spreading lewd material amongst the sheltered public—and Tanukichi has caught the girl's interest due to his father's notoriety. Soon, Tanukichi is dragged into joining her organization called SOX, where he is forced to spread obscene propaganda, helping to launch an assault against the government's oppressive rule. With their school set as the first point of attack, Tanukichi will have to do the unthinkable when he realizes that their primary target is the person he admires most. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
My Rating: 7/10
Finished airing in 2015 with a total of 12 episodes.
My Thoughts: Super pervy but surprisingly funny and somewhat enjoyable. The only character that really made me cringe hard and want to tear my eyes out and scrub my brain was Anna... she was just too much. Just no. Not one i’d suggest or am likely to watch again but if it’s your thing, go for it.
Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan):
Genres: Action, Military, Mystery, Super Power, Drama, Fantasy, Shounen
Synopsis: Centuries ago, mankind was slaughtered to near extinction by monstrous humanoid creatures called titans, forcing humans to hide in fear behind enormous concentric walls. What makes these giants truly terrifying is that their taste for human flesh is not born out of hunger but what appears to be out of pleasure. To ensure their survival, the remnants of humanity began living within defensive barriers, resulting in one hundred years without a single titan encounter. However, that fragile calm is soon shattered when a colossal titan manages to breach the supposedly impregnable outer wall, reigniting the fight for survival against the man-eating abominations. After witnessing a horrific personal loss at the hands of the invading creatures, Eren Yeager dedicates his life to their eradication by enlisting into the Survey Corps, an elite military unit that combats the merciless humanoids outside the protection of the walls. Based on Hajime Isayama's award-winning manga, Shingeki no Kyojin follows Eren, along with his adopted sister Mikasa Ackerman and his childhood friend Armin Arlert, as they join the brutal war against the titans and race to discover a way of defeating them before the last walls are breached. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
My Rating: 9/10
Finished airing in 2013 with a total of 25 episodes.
My Thoughts: The first season was a damn near masterpiece and it’s rise in popularity was no shock after watching it. Amazing opening theme, fitting art/ style and a pretty interesting story. This is the type of anime that i’d likely suggest to someone who isn’t actually all that interested in anime.
Shingeki no Kyojin Season 2 (Attack on Titan Seaon 2):
Genres: Action, Military, Mystery, Super Power, Drama, Fantasy, Shounen
Synopsis: For centuries, humanity has been hunted by giant, mysterious predators known as the Titans. Three mighty walls—Wall Maria, Rose, and Sheena—provided peace and protection for humanity for over a hundred years. That peace, however, was shattered when the Colossus Titan and Armored Titan appeared and destroyed the outermost wall, Wall Maria. Forced to retreat behind Wall Rose, humanity waited with bated breath for the Titans to reappear and destroy their safe haven once more. In Shingeki no Kyojin Season 2, Eren Yeager and others of the 104th Training Corps have just begun to become full members of the Survey Corps. As they ready themselves to face the Titans once again, their preparations are interrupted by the invasion of Wall Rose—but all is not as it seems as more mysteries are unraveled. As the Survey Corps races to save the wall, they uncover more about the invading Titans and the dark secrets of their own members. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
My Rating: 7.5/10
Finished airing in 2017 with a total of 12 episodes.
My Thoughts: I have a very love/ hate sort of relationship with every season of this anime after the first. I still find it to be an extremely interesting anime and story that’s quite well done but certain negatives keep popping up as i’m watching, things I can’t quite ignore. Still pretty good series overall though.
Shingeki no Kyojin Season 3 (Attack on Titan Season 3):
Genres: Action, Military, Mystery, Super Power, Drama, Fantasy, Shounen
Synopsis: Still threatened by the "Titans" that rob them of their freedom, mankind remains caged inside the two remaining walls. Efforts to eradicate these monsters continue; however, threats arise not only from the Titans beyond the walls, but from the humans within them as well. After being rescued from the Colossal and Armored Titans, Eren Yaeger devotes himself to improving his Titan form. Krista Lenz struggles to accept the loss of her friend, Captain Levi chooses Eren and his friends to form his new personal squad, and Commander Erwin Smith recovers from his injuries. All seems well for the soldiers, until the government suddenly demands custody of Eren and Krista. The Survey Corps' recent successes have drawn attention, and a familiar face from Levi's past is sent to collect the wanted soldiers. Sought after by the government, Levi and his new squad must evade their adversaries in hopes of keeping Eren and Krista safe. In Shingeki no Kyojin Season 3, Eren and his fellow soldiers are not only fighting for their survival against the terrifying Titans, but also against the terror of a far more conniving foe: humans. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
My Rating: 8/10
Finished airing in 2018 with a total of 12 episodes.
My Thoughts: I just don’t really care for the characters... I mean I don’t hate them but that connection just isn’t there. Which may be a large part in why I don’t LOVE this series. Still, this season was a bit better than the previous one.
Shingeki no Kyojin Season 3 Part 2 (Attack on Titan Season 3 Part 2):
Genres: Military, shounen, action, Mystery, Super Power, Drama, Fantasy
Synopsis: Seeking to restore humanity’s diminishing hope, the Survey Corps embark on a mission to retake Wall Maria, where the battle against the merciless "Titans" takes the stage once again.
Returning to the tattered Shiganshina District that was once his home, Eren Yeager and the Corps find the town oddly unoccupied by Titans. Even after the outer gate is plugged, they strangely encounter no opposition. The mission progresses smoothly until Armin Arlert, highly suspicious of the enemy's absence, discovers distressing signs of a potential scheme against them.
Shingeki no Kyojin Season 3 Part 2 follows Eren as he vows to take back everything that was once his. Alongside him, the Survey Corps strive—through countless sacrifices—to carve a path towards victory and uncover the secrets locked away in the Yeager family's basement.
[Written by MAL Rewrite]
My Rating: 9/10
Finished airing in 2019 with a total of 10 episodes.
My Thoughts: That’s the stuff. That’s the stuff I loved about the very first season of the anime. A vast improvment from the previous two seasons in my opinion!
Shingeki no Kyojin: Kuinaki Sentaku (Attack on Titan: No Regrets):
Genres: OVA, Action, Fantasy
Synopsis: Many years before becoming the famed captain of the Survey Corps, a young Levi struggles to survive in the capital's garbage dump, the Underground. As the boss of his own criminal operation, Levi attempts to get by with meager earnings while aided by fellow criminals, Isabel Magnolia and Farlan Church. With little hope for the future, Levi accepts a deal from the anti-expedition faction leader Nicholas Lobov, who promises the trio citizenship aboveground if they are able to successfully assassinate Erwin Smith, a squad leader of the Survey Corps. As Levi and Erwin cross paths, Erwin acknowledges Levi's agility and skill and gives him the option to either become part of the expedition team, or be turned over to the Military Police, to atone for his crimes. Now closer to the man they are tasked to kill, the group plans to complete their mission and save themselves from a grim demise in the dim recesses of their past home. However, they are about to learn that the surface world is not as liberating as they had thought and that sometimes, freedom can come at a heavy price. Based on the popular spin-off manga of the same name, Shingeki no Kyojin: Kuinaki Sentaku illustrates the encounter between two of Shingeki no Kyojin's pivotal characters, as well as the events of the 23rd expedition beyond the walls. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
My Rating: 7/10
Finished airing in 2015 with a total of 2 episodes.
My Thoughts: I love Levi, he’s probably the only character I really care all that much about in this series but I just didn’t love this OVA!

Software Is Life
A companies' success is determined by functionality. This holds true for most aspects of life. Success level is highly correlated with functionality; even more so now in the digital age. I define my own functionality as my ability to innovate, and think critically. My business mission before I created Launchpadds was two parts: first, get as much information possible about making money online. Second, read and watch webinars, study other entrepreneurs (claiming) to make millions, even billions online.
I initially planned this as a short voyage, but it morphed into an ongoing three-year journey. Hence the title, software is life.
I initially learned about SaaS though a company called The Foundation. I began their program but didn't have resources to complete, but I learned to build any business relies on good copy. I didn't understand why it's so crucial until I started doing it. Write content for sales. The content can be used, recycled and re-purposed across all outlets. Your business has a message, and that message makes up your story. If the message is consistent across outlets, you will be more trustworthy to search engines, and wallah, more sales. When you run ads and drive traffic, people will see your business and consider it credible based off the way it's copy is designed. People will read your copy, and get a feeling; the feeling can either equate to sales or not.
I dumped more time into learning online money makers such as funnel hacking, consulting, shopify, amongst others. I still wasn't getting any results, which I acknowledge and blame myself for not applying the systems. The systems are great, my implementation is profane, and it wasn't right for me at the time to go further with them. I still follow these websites and plan to explore their functions more in the future. The amount of growth I've seen in these companies is phenomenal.
It wasn't until I stumbled back into cloud based software again looking for tools that would help me manage the reputation of a brand I designed called General Hearts. I discovered how to combine functionalities to match what I need to run nearly any business I want to create, and I realized, this is way too darn cool to keep to myself.
I s*** you not, this software makes brand management enjoyable instead of tedious. You're optimizing the way people interact and recognize your brand, organically boosting revenue. It puts the work you're already wasting time on, on cruise control. Effective software free's you up for whatever else you want to do!
Launchpadds dramatically cuts costs in search engine optimization alone, but also has features to make yourself synchronized and present across main social media channels; from one screen. I haven't mentioned all the features, but I feel like I've gone far enough. Read the website or subscribe to the blog if you want to go further in. Set up a demo and see for yourself how user-friendly and efficient Launchpadds is.
Assuming your content has keywords laced throughout, and your story relates you to your audience, your business will dramatically increase chance of thriving success. Your ads will target better, specifically those who have already expressed interest in your business! Google is the foundation for your digital footprint. Social media is a massive opportunity; it's the chance to show off your business (all your teams hard work).
Launchpadds is about to take flight, so get in now while the price is low. It can be life changing. The software is an all-inclusive platform for businesses to optimize search engines, social media, and review platforms, removes multi-system chaos, and converts more sales. We proudly offer continued value and next level services to any business or brand that uses google and/or social media with a priority of optimization, innovation, and growth.
"Consistent innovation. Focus on the future. Dominate the market."

Faraway Wanderers Reading Blog: Chapters 06-10
I AM BACK! Maybe I’ll be able to finish this live blog series before the live action comes out? Hopefully?
Chapter 6: The Beauty
Gu Xiang and Zhou Zishu are way too much together, ha. They also make a good team, surprisingly, even with Zhou Zishu having to bow out of the fight part way (throwing the same “poor fragile me” excuse Gu Xiang used right back at her…except he actually means it since the fool is literally dying a slow death by nails). He’s also a good teacher, and her a good student, and this really isn’t helping him lay low but ah well, I guess that flew out of the window once this whole mess started.
The fight scenes are pretty good, too. Gu Xiang is young and confident, but absolutely brutal and not afraid to use hidden weapons. She has good reflexes and instincts, though she is still young, and that’s reflected in her panic when she loses her weapon and getting overconfident. Contrast that with Zhou Zishu who is very observant and picks up some stones to help her out when he has to rest, and you can see the clear difference between them as people with two different experience levels. It’s really neat how the narrative manages to mix the characters’ life experiences, personality, and age into the way they fight without giving it away explicitly.
She blinked in astonishment — this ragged man’s ramblings worth diddlysquat, but his execution in battle was one of the cleanest and cruelest she had ever seen. It really made one wonder who he was.
Really throwing that image out the window. Guess it’s lucky he was nerfed by the nails, huh. And it turns out that our main character is also a rather brutal fighter, when he can fight without collapsing.
And here enters Wen Kexing, finally with a proper name! What an entrance. He’s already kind of a creep with no sense of personal boundaries, ha. He’s also really, really perceptive though. In a creepy way (who says “your shoulder blades are beautiful, therefore your face must also be beautiful”?? he’s such a ridiculous flirt).
Alas, we are left wondering whether Wen Kexing is really blinded by good looks or just very perceptive after Gu Xiang says that he has a tendency to exaggerate.
Chapter 7: Setting Off
Oh gosh, this poor boy. Protect him, he is precious. I’m talking about Zhang Chengling of course, who starts the chapter off crying because he has seen a lot of stuff go down, like his entire family dying to start things off, followed by people coming to kill him and a seemingly random beggar agreeing to deliver him somewhere safe? But, alas, might as well cry yourself a river while you’re at it, kid. It’s going to be a rough ride now that he’s stuck with this ragtag group.
Wen Kexing is such a clown. He has his wits about him, but he is such a clown with a punchable face. Zhou Zishu isn’t actually much better in terms of acting like a normal human being interacting with smaller human beings. At least Zhang Chengling is resilient. He bounces back quickly and continues to pester Zhou Zishu to become his teacher. He does still have nightmares, which makes sense after all he’s been through.
But he seems to remind Zhou Zishu of someone from his past, which is interesting.
Back to why Zhang Chengling is a precious bun and must be protected: after having nightmares and believing he’s woken his savior up, he says things like “I can…I can stop sleeping if it’s a problem?” That is not actually a legitimate solution to the problem, believe it or not.
Then some enemies arrive with a superpowered guqin/zither, which is hilarious no matter how many novels or dramas I encounter considering traditional guqin with silk strings aren’t very loud instruments (the description from the first sentence of the next chapter is right in that it’s more of a “thin” sound than other instruments).
Chapter 8: Moonshade
Wen Kexing is indeed an enigma, the perfect match for Zhou Zishu who is undoubtedly one himself. In between his moments of eccentricity, he provides a lot of insight to the martial arts world, the way he conveys the harshness of life in it striking a rather eerie note (Wen Kexing’s voice was gentle, “Even if he’s still alive, all of his meridians have been broken; he’s useless now. Death would be a happier fate for him.”) and slides right out of it a moment later.
This match also speaks to Zhou Zishu’s capabilities: injured, he managed to beat Qin Song who is apparently well-known for his ability to kill people with that zither, and with a crudely constructed flute at that.
He felt a particular aura from this man that suggested they might be birds of a feather, the other would definitely not do something if it didn’t benefit him. […] After lots of thoughts without any solid conclusions, he scoffed at himself — old habits died hard.
You two are indeed birds of a feather, glad you noticed. I do like how he slips back into old habits, after all, he only recently stepped away from his former life as a spymaster, it’d be difficult to put a stop to all of his old tendencies.
They even proceed to exchange a few moves, presumably to figure each other out, until the pesky nails driven into Zhou Zishu’s torso act up, which gives Wen Kexing an opportunity to be a creep and touch his face. Half of it makes sense, since he’s convinced Zhou Zishu is “a beauty” and hiding it somehow, but he seems the type to have done such a thing even without that reason.
This exchange is hilarious though:
-What’s my face made of? -Human skin. -It feels like it’s one with your body… -Well, I was born with it, so.
…I should hope so. These two are a comedy duo in their own right.
Gu Xiang continues to be a delight, in any case. She has no reserve about making smart comments as soon as Wen Kexing’s back is turned, probably knowing he can still hear her at a distance.
Finally, three days later, their little party manages to make it to Zhang Chengling’s father’s friend, but we’re only on chapter 8, which means there’s much more chaos to be had in their future. For now, Zhou Zishu is relieved he finished his self-imposed mission and gained some “merits”, but muses on how it’s exhausting to be good person, haha. Indeed, the world doesn’t make it easy sometimes, especially not the crazy martial arts world they live in.
Chapter 9: In the Woods
Name info-dump, I guarantee I will remember none of them. It does fill out the world and fits with Zhou Zishu’s character, since his job required him to know all the nitty-gritty details of the major players in the martial arts world.
Ultimately, the exposition serves to let us know why he decides stay in the manor for a bit, as he’s well aware that Zhao Jing and the rest of the people grouping up at his place aren’t as glamorous and gallant as they seem. Also, he’s already weak to Zhang Chengling’s puppy eyes, apparently.
Zhao Jing is catching onto the glaringly obvious hints at Zhou Zishu being far more than a random beggar, and his manipulation of Zhang Chengling’s eager to please nature might be a bad sign of what’s to come. Zhou Zishu is more than prepared for a little investigating into his real identity, and the deception runs deep enough that he has a whole fake history and job to go along with his name.
Zhou Zishu endures a round of social BS-ing, aka attempts to dig for information on him, which is explained in a really succinct manner: although the greetings and false praise are absolute bullshit and not genuine in the least, they do serve a purpose, which is to sort out who has relations with who, and who is an outsider to be wary of. It’s a good point. The boot-licking is a standard in the genre that emphasizes the importance of saving face and social relations. The author summed it up well.
After sitting through all that, Zhou Zishu decides he has stayed long enough and departs under the cover of night, except he can’t shake Wen Kexing off his tail, much to his annoyance.
I’ll admit, these two characters don’t draw me in quite as much as some of priest’s other protagonists, but their dialogue is a goldmine:
-“Escorting the young master Zhang is purely for gathering merits, so that I won’t have to endure any tortures in the Underworld after death. -“Correct, Brother Zhou truly shares the same mind with me; and as only beautiful people can do that, it is clear-” -“See, my dear soulmate, another chance for merit gathering has appeared.”
They continue bickering until they find a corpse in the forest, aaand this is where our plot kicks off!
Chapter 10: Netherworld
“Someone killed the Lord of Duan Jian Manor, and I’m a charitable person who wants to gather merits, so why not. And I’m bored anyway.”
Ha. And Zhou Zishu catches onto his BS right away, suggesting he might want to chase after Sun Ding because he’s the most powerful of the culprits who ran off. It’s hilarious how well-matched these two are, and how they just roll with each other’s ridiculous commentary.
Despite not wanting to get involved, Zhou Zishu can’t help it. His detective senses are tingling and he figures there’s nothing to lose since he’s a dead man walking.
However, their pursuit leads them to another dead body, and they take off after the person fleeing the crime scene until they reach a cemetery. Of course it’s a cemetery, haha. The person they were pursuing also disappears mysteriously. The whole scene is fit for a horror movie, complete with laughing animals.
Now, to be fair, and I’m not sure if this applies to owls, but some animals like foxes have truly terrifying vocalizations (one variation sounds like a screaming woman, for one). It’s no wonder people used to think demons and spirits existed. Unlike western depictions of the owl as a symbol of wisdom, among other things, in Chinese culture they’re apparently bad omens, at most used to ward off evil spirits.
Wen Kexing is so random and dramatic and loves to talk, haha. He tells a short story about owls being omens of death, then about locust trees being considered the door to the underworld. They really do find an underground cavern and river beneath the tombstone.
So! We have met our two main characters, become well-acquainted with their propensity to hide their true identities and incessant bickering when they’re together, and set the stage for solving a murder mystery. Decent progression for 10/78 chapters. I really love priest’s writing, which is always a delightful balance of pleasant and poetic description between good, distinctive dialogue and forward action to progress the story.

Felling Tree With Roots - Iron Fist blog
(SPOILER WARNING: The following is an in-depth critical analysis. If you haven’t seen this episode yet, you may want to before reading this review)
I have no idea how to structure this review, and that’s because Felling Tree With Roots is a complete and total mess. It’s rare to watch an episode where so many things seem to happen and yet nothing happens at the same time. There’s no core narrative. Nothing to latch on to. The episode just jumps around all over the place and I honestly can’t be bothered to keep up anymore.
First off Harold is back. Now that the Hand know that Danny is the Iron Fist, NOW they seem concerned about Harold’s activities after four episodes. This leads to yet another rubbish fight scene before Harold chops his own finger off to make it look as though these henchmen succeeded before seemingly disappearing off the face of the Earth. (yeah, I’m sure the Hand won’t be at all suspicious about that).
Meanwhile Danny and Colleen have sex. This I decided to fast-forward through because I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to see what Finn Jones’ cumface looks like. Also, so much for that vow of chastity Danny took, right? In the hands of a semi-competent writer, maybe they could have taken the whole idea that maybe Danny doesn’t want to be the Iron Fist and his having sex with Colleen perhaps symbolises him rejecting the teachings of the people in K’un L’un who trained/abused him for 15 years, but clearly Scott Buck doesn’t even qualify as a barely competent writer, let alone a semi competent writer. And another thing, why does Colleen want to have sex with him? The two have shared no chemistry whatsoever. Not to mention all of Danny’s other charming qualities like him continuously disrespecting Colleen’s dojo, asserting himself in her private affairs where he’s not wanted or needed and the fact that he’s just an arrogant, sexist, and dimwitted buffoon surely should discount him as boyfriend material.
Let’s talk about the one good thing about this episode, and indeed this series. Madame Gao. While I’m utterly confused as to why she’s leading a group that she has had no prior association with whatsoever, I must confess I am glad to see Madame Gao again. It really speaks to Wai Ching Ho’s acting ability (as well as Finn Jones’ significant lack of acting ability) that a 70 odd year old Chinese woman is more intimidating than the Immortal Iron Fist. Wai Ching Ho frankly outclasses Jones in every way, owning every scene she’s in. I love that Gao is just casually dealing heroin from an office in Rand Enterprises. Now there’s a power move if ever I saw one.
Then some guy shows up at Colleen’s dojo. I have no idea who he is, how he knows Colleen, or why he’s here, and his inclusion in the episode is completely pointless, so let’s move on.
So Danny and Colleen persuade that Chinese triad to attack the Hand’s warehouse or something. Don’t get excited. I know what you’re thinking. A gang war sounds positively gripping, doesn’t it? But Scott Buck doesn’t do gripping, that’s why the scene barely lasts two minutes. The show would rather focus on more important things, like this stupid chemical plant case that doesn’t seem to have anything to do with the Hand plot, as well as a corporate takeover of Rand Enterprises. Because that’s what I want to see in a martial arts show. Corporate takeovers. Sigh.
Finally there’s Ward, who seems to have gone a bit... how do I put this?... cuckoo for cocoa puffs. There’s one really funny scene where he walks in on Harold hitting a corpse with a hammer and starts to retch, reaches for a bucket to throw up in only to find Harold’s finger at the bottom (and the sad thing is I don’t think this scene was supposed to be funny). Then Harold expects Ward to dump the bodies, which leads to another funny scene of Ward comedically grunting and heaving corpses out of the back seat of a car and into a lake. The whole thing just comes across like a Laurel & Hardy skit that’s gotten hideously out of control.
And then things take a turn for the dark when Ward kills Harold for reasons that aren’t very well defined. The animosity between the two has been apparent since Episode 1, but Ward killing his dad feels ridiculously extreme. Ward objects to Harold treating him like a child and controlling his life, but the fact is the two haven’t had many meaningful interactions to justify Ward’s outburst of murderous rage. Hell, Harold disappeared for several episodes while Ward was dealing with his sudden and utterly random drug problem. Ward killing his father should feel like the culmination of several episodes’ worth of animosity and torment. Instead it just comes right the fuck out of nowhere. It’s shocking, but not in the right way. Also, shouldn’t Ward be more angry at the Hand? The only reason Harold is doing most of this stuff is because of the Hand. It all leads to my central complaint of that I don’t understand Ward’s motivation. He knows the Hand exist. Why is he so resistant in helping Danny or doing something about it?
This doesn’t let Harold off the hook of course, Initially Harold was presented as a dark, controlling antagonist. Then Danny shows up and suddenly he’s this innocent victim who wants nothing more than to help Danny on his mission, stroke puppies, kiss orphan babies’ foreheads and make everything okay. Then when Ward tries to up and leave, he steals all his money and beats him. This isn’t light and shade. This is a completely inconsistent and poorly written character.
Felling Tree With Roots is both stupid and boring, and I couldn’t be any less interested in where they’re going with any of this. God I hate this show.

Mission: Every week I will visit a new café/coffee shop in Denver. The daunting part of this plan is that I intend to write, blog, at each one. My idea is to have 2 segments. The first part, “the fact,” of the blog will be my experience at the café, a review if you will, how I’m feeling, what I see, etc… The second part, “the fiction,” will consist of a fictional story that I come up with while at the café. I’ll be grabbing onto my surroundings, the vibes, and my feelings to inspire a short story.
the fact
The Santa Fe art district is looking fresh. Despite the dirty snow piled up on the side street parking spots, this Sunday morning is pretty, cold, and bright. Walking into the Joe Maxx Coffee Company I push onto the right side of the door, no budge. A quick sweat of panic sweeps over me as I think to myself, “dammit Emily, you didn’t check to make sure they are open today.” I pause for a moment then push onto the left side of the door and it sways open. I’m definitely one of those people who acknowledge my awkward moments, but alas, no one was around to hear my ramblings. It’s pretty empty in this coffee shop this morning, with the exception of a table of middle-aged women loudly talking amongst each other.
Before I grab a drink, I head to the back of the shop to have a look around. It’s small, and the windows are shaded from the bright morning. The walls and floors are dark brown, and there are old rugs under each table. I choose a spot in the back corner on a couch that you would find at your friend’s grandparent’s house. I take off my coat and oversized blanket of a scarf and place them onto the couch. I go up to the front and take a moment to look over the menu. There are specialty coffee items on the menu like a White and Dirty, Spiked Lemonade, and an Affogato which is a scoop of vanilla ice cream drowned with a fresh hot shot of espresso. So tempted to order this ice cream based drink, I decide it’s too early for dessert, so I order the Kolache Latte which is a hazelnut latte topped with honey, whipped cream, and pecans—perfectly on the brink of desert. I ask the barista if I said it right, to which another barista standing near him corrects my pronunciation. I also order a slice of pumpkin bread. When he hands it to me he says “this is a massive piece of pumpkin bread.”
“Oh, awesome.” I excitedly reply. And it was in fact, a massive piece of moist pumpkin deliciousness piled onto a small glass white plate. While the milk for my Kolache Latte is being warmed and foamed, I look around at some of the funky art hanging on the brick walls. Music is being played, I’m assuming, from the plugged-in iPod laying on an old turntable. The barista calls out my coffee drink, and I go back up to retrieve my gooey looking over whipped cream drink in a to-go cup. Hurriedly, I head back to my spot and place my drink and pumpkin bread on the coffee table in front of the couch. I marvel for a moment at the toppings on my hazelnut latte. I’m also definitely the kind of person that has to eat all of the whipped cream off my drinks before I do anything else. I think it’s ridiculous letting it pathetically melt into your hot beverage without enjoying the creaminess of its intended state.
So, here I am, slurping up the honey-topped whipped cream, which is making my lips gooey and messy, and I couldn’t be happier. I lick my lips of the thick honey, and resume scooping the rest of the whipped cream off the top with the fork I’m using for my pumpkin bread. When I finally finish off all the good stuff my drink is down to half full. I dive into my bread and eat about half of it while I look around the shop noticing how every corner is being utilized for something—decoration or purpose. The corner directly in front of me to the left has a small old wooden TV table with one of those old black and white TVs that have two knobs for changing channels and an antenna. “Cool,” I think as I shove a giant piece of bread into my mouth. I don’t even mind that the bathrooms are across from me. The “all gender restrooms” are hip with art, white bath tiles, and uneven brick walls. I even stand up and walk over into one of them to check it out. “Cool,” I say out loud this time. The one thing I always remember when I check out a new restaurant or business—the bathrooms, if they’re worthy. I’m all about cool bathrooms.
While I’m up I continue to walk around the small space of the back of the coffee shop. There’s an old piano with a bench covered in itchy looking fabric. Where sheets of music are meant to be, there are business cards placed along the ledge. I almost pick up one of a woman who connects to spirits, but then decide there are no spirits I need to reach out to, so I leave it for someone who really needs her services. I do, however, pick up a business card of a woman who claims to be able to “facilitate my self-healing” and also a card from the Colorado Ballet where their slogan on the bottom of the card is “Drink Beer, Dance, Conquer.” Smiling as I take my new finds back to my area, I sink down into the couch and pull out my laptop.

the fiction
Billy laid his forearms on the sticky wood glazed bar of the dark dance hall. A Johnny Cash album played quietly from the turntable in the corner. Despite the warm bright morning, the hall was dark and cold. Before his first dance class, Billy liked to get to work early and have a bourbon at the bar. He’d been leading dance classes for 20 years, and just two years ago he bought this place from an old man whose wife had just passed. The old man was happy to hear Billy’s plans for the place. “Babe loved to dance. She would be happy to see this dump of a bar used for dancing.” Billy remembers the old man saying this, looking off into the distance for a good 30 seconds, and then handed Billy the keys saying, “Good luck, son.”
It took Billy three months to convert the old bar into a dance hall. He put in new wood flooring and painted the brick walls a deep red color. He put in a wall of mirrors across from the bar. He left the old bar there, he liked it. Even though he couldn’t sell booze, he kept a stash of nice bourbon under the counter and would often drink either by himself or with some of his regular patrons after the late classes.
This morning was no different from any other morning. Billy offered morning classes every weekday starting at 10 AM. The people who attended the morning classes were mostly of the older crowd, and his favorite. They would come in loud, always laughing about some conversation they all had while walking together to the hall. Someone would bring in pastries or biscuits, and Billy supplied them with coffee. They would all sit around the bar and have a cup of coffee before they would start. They never got to the actual dancing until 10:30. He would pour the first cup of coffee as they were stepping into the door promptly at 10, and set down a new full cup at each seat of the bar. Each of them greeting him with either a loud “Billy!,” or a nod and a “mornin, Bill.” There was a good mix of men and women, most of them single. All were friends, and all met at Billy’s Hall.
For the morning classes, Billy changed up the dance every week. These people came here for the social aspect of the hall rather than the actual dance, so they didn’t mind the inconsistency of the dances. They actually seemed to enjoy learning new dances, laughing together as they misstepped. Today Billy was teaching swing dance, one that he’d done many times with this morning group.
This morning’s topic of conversation was about the new neighborhood community garden being built a block over. They were all talking about the plots they had already bought, and what they planned on planting in them. As each of them talked about the vegetable or flower they were planning on growing, everyone chimed in with what they would do with the plant—going on tangents on each topic.
“Oh, my grandkids LOVE watermelon, I’m going to grow that too!”
“Ooo I’ll bring in some homemade tomatillo salsa every week. Who likes spicy?”
“My father used to make the best fried green tomatoes…”
Almost in an uproar of volume, the group would excitedly chime in with responses.
Billy sat at the end of the bar, sitting on his stool behind the bar sipping on his black coffee. Smiling, he listened to each person’s response and chimed in with his own comical spats. The sound of coffee cups hitting the heavy wood bar, the rusted stools swiveling, and the clammer of the group gave Billy’s Hall a character that he never expected but, now, oh so appreciated. Billy enjoyed what this group made this place out to be.
He looked down at his watch. “Alright, people, 10:30,” Billy spoke loudly over everyone. In almost a single sweep everyone was out of their chairs, coffee cups left on the bar.
Mission: Every week I will visit a new café/coffee shop in Denver. The daunting part of this plan is that I intend to write, blog, at each one.
