🐉RATING: 🔥🔥🔥🔥/5 Whiteout is a collection of love stories, written by an all-star team of YA authors - Dhonielle Clayton, Tiffany P. Jackson, Nic Stone, Angie Thomas, Ashley Woodfolk, and Nicola Yoon. Clayton first brought the group together to write Blackout, published in 2021, a collection of loosely connected stories that take place when the power goes out in New York City. Unlike their first book, which had each chapter - each story - credited to its author, Whiteout intertwines its characters and fits them under the umbrella of a primary plotline. This modified format encourages the reader to guess the lead author of each character and their subplot. There are even hints in the authors’ note. A sweet series of teen love stories, Whiteout takes place in Atlanta during a rare snowstorm. Despite the obstacles - due to the snow and their own stubbornness - there are enough happy endings to program a week of Hallmark movies. There is strong LGBTQIA representation within the ensemble cast of characters, and their families are both structurally and ethnically diverse. Atlanta residents will appreciate references to popular landmarks, the original Snowpocolypse, and the spot-on descriptions of Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport as well as highways I-75, I-85, and I-285. Atlanta native Nic Stone knows how traffic can turn any day into a nightmare. Tomorrow is #digitaldetoxday, so I won’t be about on the socials. ☕️Even though I’d like to think I’m not as attached to my phone or socials as some people, I do find myself on them quite a bit, so in a way this weekend is the nudge I find myself needing. Sixteen-year-old Nora Gallagher has spent the past summer either with her boyfriend or at the local running track. As September approaches, she expects much of the same monotony. However, while at a crafts fair, Nora meets her neighbor, Wren Velasquez, whose holding a sign saying, “Tell me your story, and I’ll give you $1.” Neither divulge their stories.

Three days later, Wren climbs onto the balcony outside of Nora’s room, purple bruises lining his rib cage to match her black eye, and they finally share pieces of their stories. This begins an unspoken deal―he comes into her room at night, and they ignore each other’s bruises.

As Nora and Wren forge a romance, they must cope with numerous issues, including her abusive boyfriend and his abusive stepfather. But as the outside world threatens to tear apart the sanctuary they’ve created, they may not be able to keep ahold of each other―or themselves―for much longer.
