Younger people ask me, how exactly is it that Hewlett-Packard, the printer manufacturer, ended up taking over the world? After checking out the window for the presence of their all-hearing, man-slicing surveillance drones, I tell them. It was this, or they'd force the President to maintain a fleet of inkjet printers.

At first, things weren't so bad. We started to roll back the whole "paperless office" scam of the 90s. At one point, a bunch of toughs all zooted out on free government-provided fuser oil smashed the door to the data-centre where the False Minds existed, their pseudo-artificial-intelligence a clear threat to a world where being able to print was essential. That was a lot of fun, stepping on a bunch of scattered RAM in the middle of the street and knowing it was so close to being able to feel pain.

Then it became much clearer how things were going to really go from now on. Whole forests were felled in an instant to feed the new demand for vessels to contain our minds. Libraries suddenly became stuffed with hastily constructed bookshelves, their once-silent printers leaping back to life and erupting orgasmic volleys of paper. And everyone, everywhere, was looking for yellow ink, no matter what they printed. It's been twenty-five years since then.

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not complaining about the dominance of the printer giants. Sure, the amount of fatal papercuts has skyrocketed. Especially now that the ambulances aren't allowed to use their radios anymore, not unless they're connected to a fax machine. And pretty much everything has to be turned on and off a few times before it starts to work, otherwise it just blinks a stupid little light that doesn't mean anything.

All this, though, is worth it. Because as soon as Hewlett-Packard took control of the world governments, they took their first acts of violence out on their competition. Had the guy who made the shitty paper loader for the Lexmarks executed. And the rush from that was enough to get me through having to pay 25 cents a poop for the rest of my life. Sorry you missed it.

I glance up from my hiding spot in the storage house at the sound of two voices coming from the hall. Faintly, I heard someone say, "Hello, how are you?" With a scoff, the other one whispered, "Good. What'd I miss? Nothin'." I roll my eyes as I realize who it is, the sarcasm is enough of an indicator. I round the container, keeping quiet as they continued to bicker about how many people were loading the truck outside. I pop up next to Sam, glancing at the man loading the truck.

"There's 5 of them," I whisper cooly as Sam jumps back in shock. Bucky's eyes widen as I keep my stare forward at the mission. "The hell is your problem?" He asks glaring at me. I glare back at him and stand up fully. "You told me to meet you here," I say as my hands gesture to the storage unit. Sam settles back into his spot as he fiddles with his arm monitor for Red Wing. "Didn't have pop up like a fuckin' creep," he mumbles. "Didn't tell me she was coming, you wouldn't even let me come," Bucky bickers. Sam shoots him a look with a chuckle. "Yeah, well she's nicer than you even if she scares the shit outta me sometimes," he whispers.

Suddenly, something dropped on the ground and the loaders stopped moving the boxes. We all duck down, watching quietly. Soon enough, the trucks start to leave the unit, and Sam gives the go signal. Bucky and I run quickly to keep up with the trucks as Sam flies over. As Bucky gets on the back of the first one, I get on the last, opening the containers. Inside, I don't find anything but boxes of vaccines. With a sigh, I start to climb up the truck to get on top. Suddenly, I hear a crash with a groan as the truck wobbles. "Shit!" I seethe, seeing men with masks coming out of both trucks and up top. Bucky finds his way onto the top of the truck, watching as a man lunges at me. I duck as Sam kicks him over, letting him hang off the side. Glancing down the truck at Bucky, he starts to fight a man in a mask, while one grabs me from behind. He throws me forward, fist landing beside my head. My legs lock around his torso, flipping him over as I grab my knife from its holder. I plug it at his head as he grabs my wrist, snarling in the mask. I groan in frustration, kicking him in the side to push him off. He stands up, holding his side until Bucky plunges at him.

I breathe heavily, stabbing my knife behind me into another man's stomach. He screams, falling onto the truck. Turning around, two men have Bucky in the hold as Red Wing flies at the red-headed girl in the mask. She grabs it, breaking it over her knee. "I always wanted to do that," I hear Bucky groan as the girl turns around. As Bucky gets the men off of him, the girl kicks him off the side of the truck, a high-pitched screech coming from his metal arm scraping the side of it. "That little girl kicked your ass!" Sam laughs, flying around the side of the truck as Bucky yells at him. Suddenly, the girl comes at me, blocking her with my arms. I kick her in the stomach which causes her to recoil back, glaring at me through her mask. A loud roar of an engine comes down the road, a shield flying through the air. I didn't need to turn around to know who it was, his booming voice muffled in my ringing ears. "You've gotta be kidding me," I sigh. As John Walker fights the men, I sit on the end of the truck to watch with a sarcastic smile. "You gonna help?" He yells. "No, I'll watch," I say with a smile until I hear a yell as I glance over my shoulder, Sam plunging under the trucks to grab Bucky as they tumble into the field. I stand back up and continue to fight, ending shortly as the girl shoves me off the side of the truck. I scream, tumbling into the grass, and rolling down the small hill as I land with a groan. Catching my breath, I stare up at the sky. Eventually, the same two bickering voices come near, groggy standing up with a groan. I slowly walked back up to the road, meeting up with the two men. "That was a really shitty plan Sam," I say, dusting off the grass from my pants. He rolls his eyes as I walk alongside him and Bucky, headed to the main road. "Sorry about Red Wing," Bucky finally says to break the silence. "No your not," Sam shoots back without even glancing at him. They continue to bicker about cyborgs and random shit as the same stupid car comes rolling up the road from behind us. We all knew who it was, glaring as we kept our focus forward. "Yall need a ride?" His annoying voice asked. It was almost condescending actually. We stayed silent as he opened the back door, closing it as we walked past him. "Oh come on, it's like 20 miles until the main road." He says, opening the door again. "Just get in." We stopped walking glancing at each other. My eyes stayed locked with Bucky's for an uncomfortable amount of time before getting in the truck.

As John blabbers about something stupid, I'm sure, I can't help but notice Bucky's thigh against mine. The truck isn't all that big; John and another man are on one side, and Sam, Bucky, and I are on the other. Sam argues with John as Bucky stares him down, earning a "Does he always stare like that?" from "Mr. Captain America." On the other hand, I stare out the back of the truck, watching the road. "And who is she?" I hear John's friend say, causing the group of men to go quiet. Reluctantly turning my attention to him I raise my brow. "Who are you?" I say sarcastically in return with a scoff. He shifts uncomfortably in his seat, blinking a few times. "I'm Battlestar, Captain America sidekick," he says proudly. Bucky scoffs next to me and I let out a snort. "Battlestar?" Bucky repeats as he looks him up and down. After an awkward silence, Sam starts to say something but Bucky interrupts. "Stop the car!" He yells getting up to leave. "Oh, come on Bucky! We need to work as a team!" John says, hands waving in the air. The truck comes to a stop and Bucky gets out as I follow. Sam and John continue to argue before he eventually follows us up the path. Soon enough, the truck putters away and we head to the town.

Homebaked Bread Mod

I like bread. I want my Sims to be able to make bread without needing multiple ovens, but also have to knead dough in the process.

So I made this mod - a new "Bake Bread..." interaction that allows you to bake bread recipes using the Baker's Station kneading animations, but done so on a counter, and then cooked in a regular oven.

This mod is a pure script mod that adds the new interaction to fridges, and includes 4 bread recipes that can be cooked in this way:

Homebaked Sourdough

Homebaked Rye

Homebaked Baguette

Homebaked Challah

All have ingredients Egg and Flour from Echoweavers wheat and flour mod if you have it.

The first 3 are cloned versions of the Baker's Station's breads (they don't affect the original ones), made to be compatible with this mod.

The challah is a cloned version of my challah recipe converted from TS4, made compatible with this mod (also does not affect the original, see below if you don't have the Challah & Matzo Ball Soup Mod).

There are some technicalities about these recipes that make things work a bit differently to normal, but I'll put that under the cut, as well as information on making Homebaked-Bread-Compatible recipes.

REQUIRES the Baker's Station item from the store, for both the kneading animations as well as the bread recipe models. But it won't crash the game without it ;)

Notes on these recipes:

For these recipes to only show up under the mod's interaction, they are not "Learnable" recipes. So they work similar to the store recipes in that they can't be learnt from a recipe book, they don't count towards a Sim's learnt recipes, and I think a few other small things which I'm not sure of. Shouldn't be a big deal but I just wanted to mention that.

Specifically for the Challah, my original version of the recipe has a level 2 recipe book. You can have both the original and the HB recipe installed as they are technically separate recipes, but the regular version (under the EA cooking interaction) will use the original cooking process and require the recipe book, whereas the HB version will just require skill level 2 and will use the kneading animations. If you don't have the original challah mod installed, you'll need the challahFiles package as well.

The cooking process looks the same for all HB recipes - Sims get the dough from the fridge, knead it on a counter, put it in a baking dish, and cook it in the oven. The only difference are the raw/cooked models used in the baking dish.

Adding new Homebaked Bread recipes:

Mostly the same as making regular custom recipes, just with a few extra steps to make it an HB recipe.

Make your recipe as normal with CC Loader (alternatively add your recipe to the recipes XML included in this mod)

The Recipe_Key must include "HBBread"

Must have a custom cooking process which Recipe_Class refers to

For the cooking process, I suggest using one of mine as a base as there are only a couple of things that need changing then: The line Models contains the only things that can be customised for the cooking process - the raw dough model in the baking tray, the cooked bread in the baking tray, and the burnt bread in the baking tray. The easiest thing is to have the first as the dough (WOFridgeDough), and the second and third as the recipe's serving model with the default and burnt material states. But if you want to have extra models, you can of course.

Even more notes:

For NoFridgeShopping simmers, there's a tuning value in the zoeoe_BakeBreadMod_Tuning XML to turn on NoFridgeShopping. As you might expect, with this set to True, Sims will require the ingredients to bake the breads, and they will be greyed out without them. You can either change this with S3PE or NRaas Retuner under Sims3.Gameplay.Objects.zoeoe.BakeBreadMod.Main.

Fun fact: yet another mistake in EA's Baker's Station recipe data - the sourdough and rye breads have the same textures (both use rye ones) because they didn't set the material state name for the sourdough bread. My HB versions use the right textures, but if you want to fix the BS ones, just change the "breadRoundRye" to "breadRoundSourdough" where the sourdough single and group models are defined in the CCMerged RMLS resource.

Arlach tapped his fingers nervously. He’d have gladly given up his life for the liberation of his people. A combine harvester (even a deluxe AI driven model) was a pittance compared to that. Still, he didn’t really understand what he was hearing.

“I uh… heard you’re hooking up my strawberry picker to an air defense cannon?”

The human technician assembling the gun held up a hand, finishing up some last tweaking of the wire harness. He touched two wires together carefully and swore when a shower of sparks shot out of the contact.

Set back, but not defeated, the man paused his task to answer the farmer’s question.

“See, you’re looking at this wrong. It’s an AI harvester, and it works great for strawberries, but machines don’t really see ‘strawberries’. They rate strawberry-ness. There’s a lot of ways to manage that, but it looks for a generally pointed shape, some seeds, and that nice red color. So your run of the mill strawberry generally receives an almost perfect strawberry-ness score, but something like this-”

His hands dug through all the pockets of his work suit before they finally found their target. He fished out what had been a standard ferroslug before it was painted bright red and smattered with a handful of black dots. He took a moment to admire it himself before tossing it to the farmer and continuing.

“Well, it’s not a strawberry, but it scores as one. Well enough that the machine gets positive feedback from its alignment unit every time it puts one of these babies where it's supposed to go.”

Arlach stared at him blankly.

“So what, you’re convincing it to fill a cargo container up with painted bullets?”

The technician grinned.

“There's no a limit to how fast it's allowed to fill that container up. At no point did the alignment protocol even consider that it'd be capable of throwing a 'strawberry' at mach nine. And the cargohold is important, but the rocket its attached to is more so. You know what looks a lot like a surface to orbit rocket?"

Arlach’s brain clicked.

“The hypersonic missiles they've been throwing at us.”

The grin widened. Arlach himself felt slightly awed to have found the connection.

“Will it work?”

The human nodded.

“It’s damn near the only thing that can. To shoot down something going that fast, that low, you either need a dummy missile that can brute force outrun it, or enough computing power to hack a station. The alliance is too chickenshit to send over their actual military AI's, but these myopic-type digibrains are supposed to be safe for civilian use because the idea of convincing your tractor that a bullet is a strawberry and a WMD is a cargo loader was a little too creative for the morons over at John Deere Galactic. And if that digibrain just so happens to function near the exoflop level, they're going to have a hard time sneaking anything larger than a bee through this airspace.”

The alien’s hands went over its crest as its mind reeled.

“They're not the only ones who would never think of this. It's brilliant. I never would've considered it.”

The tech shrugged good naturedly and went back to retrieve the two ends of wire that he’d dropped earlier.

“Eh, it's not coming from nowhere. There’s something of a human tradition about using farm equipment for war. I'm just lucky to be part of the next evolution in this. The reaper himself only used a scythe. Now I get to use a combine harvester.”

I think the entire load up process took almost 8 hours. The van got to us at 7:30 am ish but the loaders didn't show up until 8 am, which was the earlier part of the estimated window.

The van contains two other loads. Both are military related moves.

I was talking to the driver and I did ask about how that works. The van has separate side doors for each section, so no one load determines the order of unloading. The mattress is the marker point for the end point of one load. There are divider/retaining cords that keeps the other load apart from ours.

The process is more technological than it was 18 years ago. The driver was the one putting numbered stickers on everything and entering detailed notes for any damage to existing items. Our stickers are a different color. He told us he's glad this was just a regular house vs military related move. For those, they have to enter serial numbers, additional details, and they really have to note down any damage. He gave us an example with one of our items that had a nick on it. If the nick existed and he didn't note it down, the clients could easily claim damage for the price of the entire item. Apparently the military folks take classes regarding this, too. IDK about that one.

We took up the rest of the truck!

We also timed it so that the junk haulers would show up at 4. They were a little early but it worked out. They even blew out the garage with a leaf blower.

Anyway, that part is done. The driver is headed to Arkansas and then a military fort in TX. We're his last stop.

As for the rest of today -we returned Xfinity's crap, got some dinner, and ate sitting on the floor. I went through all of our home related paperwork and threw out stuff the new folks won't need. Tomorrow we load up my car, throw any remaining shit out and leave for New Mexico!

Ellie walked up behind you and started playing with your hair. You smiled as you leaned your head back and let her fingers roam through your hair.

"So, when is your mom visiting?" She asked.

"She'll be there soon. Why, getting impatient? Can't wait?" You chuckled.

You knew Els hates her.

"What do you mean, impatient?" Ellie huffed. "Of course I can't wait, she'll see what a wreck you've become and be so disappointed in you. 'Oh, y/n, what do you mean you're not working in a corporation but actually doing something you enjoy?!'" She mocked your mother's high pitched voice.

Ellie is spot on about your mother. She always had this idea of what she wanted you to do, and never could understand why you chose a different path. Ellie has a way of making you feel better, though, putting everything back into perspective.

"Ouch! What did my mother do to you?" You ask, as you lightly swing behind Ellie and tap her head with your index finger. "She's gonna be here soon. Come on, it's Christmas. Can't we all get along?" You say, as you move back to sitting in the couch, this time with Ellie laying her head on your lap, with the snow-covered trees outside seen out of the window.

Ellie shifts her body towards you and she continues to snuggle her head into your lap while giggling. "Why can't we just all get along?" She repeats teasingly. "Well... maybe because she never approved of me? Your mother has always thought I'm some sort of free-loader, and she thinks I'm going to drag you down or something." Ellie says with a mocking tone, and adds in more of your mother's voice.

"Maybe because she found out you sell weed around the town. Makes sense to me." You chuckled and this time you started to play with her hair.

"Maybe I should sell some to your mother, she clearly needs to relax and not be such a stickler all the time." Ellie snickered, as she nuzzled up to you and closed her eyes.

"I wish that'd work. Just try to be nice and she should be gone after an hour, not a big deal." You chuckled as a memory of her previous visit played in your mind. Her and Ellie... don't go along well. "Okay, she'll be there soon. If she'll get suspicious, we're just friends and roommates, nothing romantic, alright?"

"Aww, really? Just roommates and nothing else?" Ellie teased as she sat up, placed her hands under your chin and made you look into her eyes. "Fine, you can keep denying that I'm your girlfriend, and just let your mother keep living in denial." Ellie giggled, before planting a kiss on your forehead.

"Thank you. Oh, and..."

You lectured her about do's and don't's, hoping she'll listen. As you finished what you were saying, you could hear a knock at the door, followed by a quick ring of the doorbell. You looked over at Ellie and chuckled, as your mother's previous visit flashed through your mind again. "Act all formal and proper." You said with a sarcastic tone, before standing up to answer the door.

"No problem." Ellie chuckled as she got off the couch and stood next to you.

As you opened the door, you saw your mother standing outside, wearing a long coat to keep her warm, as she stared at you intensely. Before you could react, she walked straight into your apartment and shouted at you. "What have I told you about being with that girl?!"

She was already prepared for your mother's harshness as she saw it coming, and as you looked back at her, she gave a comforting smile, before she turned away.

"No, don't you 'it's nice to see you' me... What are you, in a relationship with her?" Your mother yelled at you as she pointed back at Ellie. She noticed your nervous glance towards the young girl, and her eyes narrowed.

"Jesus, no, of course not!" You lied, gesturing for her to sit down.

Your mother, who looked quite pissed off, gave you a look of disbelief. "Really? The way you keep glancing towards her says otherwise." She huffed, as she took off her coat and hung it up on the hanger before sitting down.

"We're friends." You sat on a chair next to Ellie, opposite your mother. You nervously squeezed your roommate's hand, hoping it will go unnoticed.

As you held Els's hand, she looked down and squeezed your hand back, as she tried to hold back any signs of affection towards you.

"Friends who hold hands and spend Christmas together? Yeah, right." Your mother scoffed.

You sighed, biting your bottom lip and looking at Ellie as you weren't able to hold eye contact with your mother.

"I'm sorry, don't listen to her." You mouthed so the topic of your sentence won't hear it.

"Oh, don't worry." Ellie mouthed back to you, as she placed her hand on your thigh under the table. You could tell she wasn't hurt by all the insults - she looked like she's holding back a laugh.

Your mother glanced over at Ellie, who seemed to be taking the whole situation quite well. Seeing her daughter's girlfriend smiling and smirking at her made your mother seethe. "You think this is funny?" She asked Ellie, with a harsh tone.

Before Ellie could respond, you spoke up, to avoid any further drama. "Look, can we just drop this topic? It's Christmas, and I didn't want to have a fight on this day, alright?"

Your mother turned to you and scoffed. "Oh yeah, a little Christmas cheer is going to make all this non-sense go away." She said in a sarcastic tone. "You know, if you just listened to me and broke things off with... her... then we wouldn't even be in this situation." She gestured back at Ellie with exaggeration.

"What did she even do? Do you still can't get over her weed business? God, mom, that's not the end of the world." Your tone matched your mother's as you started to get more and more embarrased by how she treats your girlfriend. Meanwhile, Ellie couldn't care less - she was smirking, her hand moving up and down your thigh.

Your mother stared back at you, with an expression filled with disappointment and anger. "Your little 'friend' is nothing more than a lowlife druggie, who lives with you just to drag you down to her level." She said with exaggeration again.

Ellie looked more amused as she saw how your mother was acting towards her, and she was having a hard time hiding her smirk. The hand on your thigh started to boldly slide up.

You gave her a 'you're not helping' look as she was, in fact, really distracting you.

Ellie giggled, as she saw you trying your best to ignore her hand moving up and down your thighs. You felt a sensation running through your body, which caused your face to turn red. You tried your best to keep your composure, as your mother was still berating Ellie.

Your mother's face showed a look of disgust as she quickly realized what was happening between you and your girlfriend, and it only grew her anger.

There was a thunderous crash of metal upon metal as LOADER 4 descended into the Coral well. Its pilot scanned the area for more of the invisible foes she'd been beset by since arriving at BAWS Arsenal 2.

No doubt about it. This water... ...It contains faint traces of Coral. Must have been an underground vein... BAWS was hiding a "well" all this time.

At first, 'Raven' had thought the job was just the Liberation Front luring her to an isolated location for an ambush, given her recent exploits. But when she arrived, it became all too clear why the arsenal had gone silent.

IA-27s, 'Ghosts' as they were more commonly known. A full squadron of unmanned stealth mechs had descended upon the arsenal, for what purpose she couldn't say. But the lack of survivors told her this was more than just an inspection.

She reacted before she was even consciously aware she was under attack, another Ghost, this one with a plasma whip and energy shield descended on her from above, striking the ground where LOADER 4 once stood. Once again her system flooded with an awareness-enhancing chemical cocktail as she engaged the new foe...Foes, at least four. Another ambush.

Three of them... No, four. You're outnumbered. Pick them off one by one, 621!

No...five? Another object approached from above. Completely unlike the other four. No time. A background partition in her mechanical brain scanned the newcomer as she dodged another strike, lunging forward with her pulse blade against the enemy's shield.

"…Iᴅᴇɴᴛɪғɪᴇᴅ." Came a voice over the comms. Feminine, soft, and obviously artificial. The closest 'Raven' had to speech, having long forgotten her natural voice. "Cᴀʟʟsɪɢɴ: Asᴜʀᴀ. AC: CHANDRASEKHAR. Aғғɪʟɪᴀᴛɪᴏɴ…Lɪʙᴇʀᴀᴛɪᴏɴ Fʀᴏɴᴛ." She continued.

She brought her rifle to bare as the enemy's shield flickered, but before she could strike another blow it activated its plasma whip, strung out beneath LOADER 4's feet. She'd fallen into a trap, forced to dodge. Simultaneously, more invisible mechs opened fire from all sides at both LOADER 4 and the newcomer.

Puzzled, you stepped further inside, calling out his name. When there was no response, a gnawing worry began to settle in your chest. You wandered through the halls of U.A., stopping by various classrooms, asking anyone you encountered if they had seen Higari. Eventually, Ectoplasm mentioned that he had seen Higari retreat to his office earlier that day and hadn’t come out since.

With your worry deepening, you hurried to his classroom, where his personal office was. The usually lively corridors were quiet now, the sounds of students long gone as the day drew to a close. When you reached the classroom door, you knocked gently, the sound echoing down the empty hallway.

“Higari? It’s me, Y/N. Can I come in?”

For a long moment, there was no answer. You almost thought he wasn’t there, but then you heard the faint sound of shuffling footsteps. The door creaked open just a crack, enough for you to see Higari’s familiar figure on the other side. He looked different without his helmet, his messy hair slightly disheveled, and his face flushed with embarrassment.

His eyes darted around, avoiding yours. “Y/N, I… I didn’t mean for you to find out like that,” he mumbled, his voice quieter than you had ever heard it. “Midnight shouldn’t have said anything.”

You took in the sight of him, standing there in the dim light of the classroom. His normally confident posture was gone, replaced by an awkward uncertainty that tugged at your heart. The classroom itself was a reflection of his mind—a mix of organized chaos, with blueprints pinned to the walls, desks cluttered with parts and tools, and a few unfinished projects scattered around.
