The victims of panic buying. Stupidity, selfishness, and greed (tomatoes won’t last a lockdown) will not protect anyone from coronavirus.

@shythalia Yes, certain media outlets have gone above and beyond in stirring up panic and hysteria among the population. But the real evil is consumerist greed. We have panic buying several times a year, notably at Christmas and on that pestilential weekend, Black Friday. People over-buying materials they do not need, and trampling on beleaguered shop assistants for the privilege thereof.
I think it's honestly the media's fault that idiots are panic-buying.

Beleaguered supermarkets plead with shoppers to stop panic buying, a stupid, irresponsible, and selfish response to the coronavirus. Panic buying means that vulnerable people more likely to suffer or die from the virus will go without at the time when they need these resources most.
The footage of people fighting over toilet paper is a damning indictment of consumerist greed masquerading as “preparation” and “concern”. All the shop assistants I have spoken to have been dazed, saying it is insane that people are panic buying when there is no necessity for this.
The country isn’t running out of toilet paper. The country isn’t running out of kitchen roll, or soap, or handwash. Rather, the real danger we face is those elderly people who are most at risk (whom some have callously seen as disposable in the face of an illness which may be more severe than the flu).
This level of panic and stupidity will not save anyone from coronavirus. What is happening is that people who are desperate for basic resources will have to wait longer, possibly compromising their health (and making them more susceptible to coronavirus). Go figure.
Time for society to rethink consumerist greed.

Another victim of panic buying. This is a shop assistant whose name is Haram on Twitter. He had to lift giant bottles of water for greedy customers buying, in his words, “$600 worth of shit they should already have”. As a result, he pulled muscles in “both arms and couldn’t sleep because of the pain.” Panic buying is harming already vulnerable shop assistants who are powerless to stop this pandemic of hoarding and selfishness. We need shops to remain open and stock necessary materials, because we have no doubt several months worth of more infections to come. Elderly people, and those more vulnerable to the disease need access to these resources more than ever. Panic buying is also sheer stupidity from an economic perspective, as it means that in several months time, people will buy drastically less, which imperils the income of shop assistants. How can people be so stupid?
