Today it is a national holiday, December 6 commemorates the anniversary of the 1978 Referendum, in which Spaniards approved the current Spanish Constitution.

Democracy almost ended abruptly due to a military coup in 1981, not unlike what happened in Korea, but the quick and decisive pro-democratic stance of the Monarchy restored order and the leader of the reactionary faction was tried and imprisoned.

Our constitution represented a process of reconciliation between left-wing and right-wing people and leaders, with the philosophy that the coming generations need not repeat the horrors of war. "That the grandchildren don't kill each other like the grandparents." This was a very broad process, including former fascists, formerly revolutionary marxists, conservatives, christian democrats, liberals, social democrats and everything else.

Spain is a constitutional monarchy where the King is the head of state, ceremonial (like in Britain or Japan for instance), and the head of the executive is a "president", who is elected by the parliament. There's a Senate and a Congress of Deputies. The Judiciary is independent, or should be. There are mechanisms for separation of power (though currently like all the world, we are suffering from the tensions created by power cliques, partitocracy, and some illiberal-leaning individuals, but that's another subject).

Here are some things I specially like about our constitutional philosophy:

-It recognizes the right to the protection of health -> spain has universal healthcare, the public sector is the quality pillar of our health system and not the private sector, meaning that when things go south even rich people come to public healthcare

-It recognizes the right of people to choose a lifestyle that is according to the "free development of personality" -> spain has some of the world's most advanced self-expression and anti-discriminatory LGBTIQ laws, including gay marriage and gender self-id

-The Capital Punishment is unconstitutional, as is torture or humiliation; the purpose of justice and any deprivation of liberty must be rehabilitation, not punishment in itself -> spain abolished the death penalty and thus also became eligible for EU membership

There are many things to cherish and celebrate about modern Spain and I'm grateful that our forefathers truly left us a better country than they found after the more unsavory periods of our history. I believe in remembrance so we never head down that road again.
