Just finished watching “Bad Boys: Ride or Die”. Pretty good movie, would recommend. I just wanna say, as someone who’s watched the first two movies, it’s really fascinating to see the differences in direction. The movie looks and sounds like the original Michael Bay movies, but you can tell it’s someone else calling the shots.

After thinking on it some more, these are what stood out to me as the differences:

1) There’s far less action. Sure, there’s still enough shootouts and chases to satisfy any action movie fan, but it’s not to the point where every five minutes is an action scene.

2) The action scenes are filmed and choreographed differently. Michael Bay’s action scenes feel like a war movie, as in he takes it as seriously as possible. Adil and Bilall’s action scenes feel like…art? It’s hard to describe, but you can tell the new directors are focused more on style and imagery over grittiness. Bay focuses on the violence while the new directors focus more on the spectacle.

3) As a follow-up to the previous note, there were certain scenes in the movie that just didn’t feel like Michael Bay’s work. I’m mainly referring to the ancestral plane scenes (not even a joke, the directors cited Black Panther as an influence). Those scenes felt like something Michael Bay would do only in a movie like Transformers, not the Bad Boys movies.

4) I can’t confirm this, but I have a sneaking suspicion that Adil and Bilall are genuine fanboys of the original Bad Boys movies. The reason why I’m pointing this out is because if you go back to Bad Boys II, you can tell that Bay didn’t really give a shit about the story. It’s like he came up with the set pieces first, and then the reason why the set pieces exist. The new movies feel like they were made by people who genuinely loved the story of the first two movies and wanted to expand on them. Expand on the “lore”, I mean.

Think about it; Captain Howard actually had a major story arc instead of just being the stereotypical angry boss, the Zoepounders subplot came back, Reggie had his own side story after being introduced as a one-off gag character, there was more focus given to Mike’s emotional issues and Marcus being the more “mature” one, and so on.

I guess this is another way of me saying that the new directors are better at storytelling than Michael Bay, which really isn’t saying much. But it’s true! This is gonna sound harsh but the new Bad Boys movies feel…structured. The story sets stuff up and gives us payoffs, like Armando killing Captain Howard, then being redeemed/spared when he rescued Howard’s granddaughter. It’s noticeably different from Michael Bay’s work, which all feel like he’s making stuff up as he goes along since he just wants to get to the next action set piece.

(Side note: To be fair to Michael Bay, except for Pearl Harbor, I think he does great when it comes to military movies. The Rock was genuinely good, as well as 13 Hours. It’s when he branches off into literally any other genre that his weaknesses in storytelling come through)

First Encounter Part 3

Wanting to clear your mind from the previous interaction with Armando, you walk over to Dorn who is scrolling through files on his computer hoping to find something for the situation. Pushing his head playful you asked if he had any luck yet, while stealing a folder to look through. "No, I found a few emails and a file but nothing that could lead us to who is doing this,” he says sighing.  

Giving his shoulder a reassuring squeeze, you say, "Don't stress yourself to much over this, I'm sure something will pop up eventually.” Turning in his chair he looks up at you, with a boyish grin.

Screwing your eyebrows together you say “What?", setting the file you were going threw down. "Y/N, I can’t stop thinking about how fast you dropped to the ground earlier," pausing to laugh he continues, "that's the fastest I seen you move besides running from bugs." Watching him laugh about the incident from earlier, you smack your lips and push at his head again.  

"You know good and well you would’ve drop like I did too; I’ll be damned if I let a bullet take me out." Seeing him really start to tear up, while laughing, you watch as he holds his stomach doubling over.”Aye, not too much asshole!” you say chuckling a bit at his reaction. Sitting up he grabs your arm trying to regain his previous composure but failing when you give him a deadpan look. 

Continue to watch your friend have his little laughing session, you smile to yourself at his goofiness. As your about to scold him some more, you're abruptly interrupted by Armando who cuts into you and Dorns space. Forcing you two to break apart, to make room for him as he rudely asks Dorn to pull up a photo for him.  

Seeing his jaw flex, he sends you an intense glance, but looks back at the screen as Dorn zooms in on the photo. Glaring at him you say "Well, that was fucking rude, you could’ve asked nicely." Dorn hums in agreement. 

“Lo que sea que digas princesa,(Whatever you say princess)” Armando says brown eyes staying locked on the screen. Pausing you scan over his form trying to figure out why he had an attitude all the sudden. Letting out a gasp, you begin to laugh, realizing that he was jealous of Dorn.  

Glancing behind Armando muscled form to look at Dorn you see him shoot you a look with a smug smile confirming what you're thinking. Shaking your head you move closer, pressing your chest against Armandos toned arms, and whisper, "Don’t worry he’s with Kelly, ". Watching as he turns his face in your direction, pretty brown eyes glancing down at your breast. 

 He firmly whispers back, "I know, he needs to keep it that way." Biting your lip you smile, at his small show of dominance, his gaze returns back to the screen. 

Unconsciously, you stay close to his warm figure, as he leans forward, eyes evaluating the photo before he says “I seen this guy before...... can you do a facial scan." Hearing this Mike, Marcus, and Kelly make their way towards you guys watching each screen as loads of information begins to pop up. 

 "His name is James McGrath, looks like he was a former DEA Agent until he was tortured by the Cartel...... Captain Conrad mentions him a few times on some of his notes.” Pausing Dorn looks up, waiting to see what his superiors might have to say.  

"This has to be him he's the only with connections to the Cartel, it could be why he has been able to pull all these stunts......” pausing in realization Marcus ask if he could pull up the surveillance at his home, looking at your father with surprise you asked why.  

But before he could answer Mike cuts in and say, "Because were the only one that has proof that the Captain is innocent and he needs leverage." glancing at his son Mike pulls out his phone calling his wife. Widening your eyes in shock you quickly run to the couch to grab your phone, immediately dialing your sister.  

Bouncing slightly as you hear the phone ring for the third time, you yell to tell your father that she’s not picking up. Watching your father call Reggie with urgency, you look up to see Armando watching with concern. Hanging up you let out a frustrated sigh returning back to where everyone was viewing the monitors intensely. 

Shaking from nerves you feel Armando brush his hands against yours, staring up at him you see worry in his eyes. Wrapping your hand around his he gives it a light squeeze, trying to calm you down.

Just as Dorn alerts everyone that theirs movement outside the home you hear Reggie pick up. As your father explains the situation quickly, Reggie springs into action, moving your mom, nephew, and pregnant sister to the pantry. 

 Watching him reach up to retrieve the gun that's stored in their as well, you watch in amazement as your brother-in-law kick ass.”Damn,I didn’t know he could do that.” your dad mutters shocked.

Everyone lets out a few comments in agreement. Watching Reggie causally body 15 attackers, had your blood rushing in adrenaline. After confirming that the house was safe, he quickly moved the family out the house but not before saluting at the camera. 

“Yeah, baby that’s how we do it in the Burnett family! "You say hugging Armando with relief and excitement after what you just witness.

Standing in shock Armando moves to embrace you as well, but looks up to see everyone watching you two like a hawk. Clearing his throat, he watches you look up at him confused, nodding his head to the side you see everyone staring. 

Breaking away from him you avoid their gazes sheepishly saying sorry. 

Before anyone could comment Mike asked Dorn to pull up his security footage after not having any success, in reaching his wife.

As everyone eyes return back to the screens with concern, you feel Armando wrapping his hand around yours again, lightly running his thumb against it. 

 Mike let's out a sigh as his wife finally picks up, but it’s too late because not even a second later you hear screams and scuffling. Frantically, your eyes search the monitors, watching as men infiltrate Mikes home. 

Glancing away from the screen you look at Mike, who has an uneasy expression washing over his face. Just as he was about to speak, a deep menacing voice cuts in, 

“tss.tss.tss.... I think you have something that belongs to me Mike......”

Conrad hadn't been going out to the bar as much as he had been, but that hadn't meant the other still hadn't been drinking. He just did it at home with Mason. The younger of the two still worried, though now at least he hadn't had to worry that he wouldn't come home. With him home more now, Mason tried even harder not to be a burden to Conrad. Conrad was drinking and hurting because of him after all. The last thing he needed was to add to that with his own feelings and struggles and problems. His brother was going through enough without needing to hear him sobbing in the middle of the night when he could swear he felt his hand there down beneath his wrist only to go to touch it and finding nothing there. He didn't need to see the frustration on his face as he struggled with things or having to relearn ones where the hand that was no longer there had been the dominant one. So he kept it all inside. Pushing it down further and further until it had no reason but to come out in a massive explosion.

This is what happened when Mason was busy trying to stock some glass jars of preserves and pickled items and one of them fell to the ground shattering. He had been holding something, which meant he couldn't have grabbed the falling jar and stopped it from falling. If he'd had his other hand still he could have, or at least he would have been able to try. It was a simple small jar of apple preserves that normally he would have just gone to grab the broom and dustpan to sweep up. Today, though, today it might as well have been the match to light a powder keg, as Mason took another jar off the shelf, slamming it onto the ground and then another and another and another and so on.

The last day of the Faire, the sky was overcast, with rumbles of thunder in the far distance. As Mayor Nat stepped up to the podium set up in front of town hall, a small crowd gathered to hear the announcement. She proceeded to declare Pandora Flowers as the winner of the costume contest, and withdrew the sword to present to the winner of the tournament, Morgan Vovk.

Before she could, though, Quinn Buckley from the commune ran up on stage and grabbed the microphone from the podium.

“Listen! You have to listen. This, all of this, is because of a being far greater than us! It sent the creatures from the woods to test us! To separate the weak from the strong. It judges us because it wants us to be ready before it reveals itself. We have to listen! We have to—“

Sheriff Henry attempted to take the microphone from her, but she struggled against him, still shouting into the microphone.

“It’s real! I felt its presence! Those that listen will be saved!”

Thunder rumbled, closer than before, much closer. A loud crack of lightning illuminated the sky, blindingly bright. Beyond the clouds, briefly visible in that split second, loomed a shape, unrecognizable and massive, both bulbous and gangly. As quickly as it appeared it was gone, and what remained was the sizzling body of Tristan Wilde, struck by the lightning. The sky opened up, then, as thunder boomed directly above, and rain and hail pelted the town.

“It’s there! You all saw it! It’s real! We have to submit!” Quinn wailed, as Henry attempted to pull her off the stage. “I can prove it! I can walk amongst them untouched! I’ve been chosen! You can be chosen too!”

Her cries fell away in the deafening downpour, and those that had gathered scattered to find shelter in the nearest buildings. Whether or not they saw something or, if they did, if they believe what they saw, remains to be seen.

The storm raged on through the night, as the creatures wandered the streets unperturbed by the rain and hail. The lights of the town flickered and then, as lightning staggered across the sky, everything went dark.

(Those that ran to find shelter found themselves stuck for the night. Below you’ll find the (randomly selected) groups. You can choose for your characters to have seen the shape in the sky, to have not seen it, or to have seen it and not believe it.

Everyone can continue/finish their event threads, as all this took place on the final day of the Faire (the 29th). The mismatched buddy buddy formula exploded onto the screen here in a ball of violence, profanity and pin sharp one liners. It also launched Eddie Murphy into 1980s stardom. Directed by Walter Hill and starring Nick Nolte alongside Murphy as part of an electrifying black and white double act, it’s unrelenting in pace and bad attitude. It could have been so different though, with the likes of Stallone, Reynolds, Pryor and Hines attached at various times for lead parts, it now is written in folklore that Murphy got the break and grasped it with both hands (he was actually fired at one point mind!). Thankfully the problems behind the scenes were resolved to give us a classic of its type. A big success for Paramount it paved the way for more choice same formula pictures in the decade, but few were able to be so course and daring with the racial divide explosions.
