Responsibility, Rage, and Recent Resurrection (Part 4)
A/N: The semester got me. Please forgive any too noticeable mistakes. There might be an epilogue or not. TBD, but for now this is the end. Thanks for reading.
Pairing: Connor x ilitw MC (Devon Hernandez)
TW: Violence between partners. Nothing worse than the game, but if the fact that its between these two characters messes with you, skip and send me an ask. I'm more than happy to post a quick summary.
Wordcount: 1632

Connor watched Devon’s chest move up and down with his breaths. After the fainting spell the day before, he’d woken up to ask for shampoo and had fallen asleep naturally later that night. Connor had tried to as well, but he couldn’t. He’d been so keyed up and stressed he couldn’t remember sleeping since his mother’s funeral. He hadn’t eaten or drank anything since before then. He felt like a hypocrite, forcing Devon to choke down oatmeal that tasted like dirt, while he’d bought a coffee only to end up holding it util it went cold. Maybe he was getting sick, the worst timing in the world, but it made sense for his luck.
Devon  snuffled and curled further into the bed. There had been a nightmare or two that Connor had soothed away by playing with Devon’s hair, nothing as violent as the first night. The sun was starting to rise and he still couldn’t sleep. He might as well do something productive. Maybe oatmeal from the café across the road wouldn’t taste like dirt.
He got out of bed and got dressed. He’d need to go to the laundromat soon for both of them. He stopped to place a kiss on Devon’s forehead and grabbed his phone out of the duffle bag. The temptation to toss it in the trash had been strong, but for the moment he still needed it.
He turned it on as he crossed the road. It was only 5:30 in the morning, so the cafe wasn’t too busy, thank god. Lately everyone had been getting on his nerves. He’d snapped at one of their motel neighbors yesterday for trying to tell him he’d dropped his keys. Not Connor’s finest moment. As he waited for his order he looked at the notifications only to freeze. Nothing since yesterday. He unlocked the phone and checked the texts. The most recent were still pleas to come back and cursing him out for leaving in the first place.
Connor jumped as his name was called. Pocketing the phone, he grabbed the order and rushed back across the street. It wasn’t a bad thing that they’d stopped calling. It probably just meant they’d given up. There were more important things for everyone to do than stay attached to a phone, but Devon’s worries ran through his mind. What if someone died? What if things had gone so bad that all of Westchester was doomed? What if there was no one left to call him?
At the start of the stairs, he set down the oatmeal and pulled out the phone again. He should check his voicemails—He frowned at the screen. For the last two days his most recent calls had been red, he hadn’t picked up any of them. So, why was the very last call from Stacy gray? 2:45 PM, yesterday. Right about when he’d left for the store just like Devon had asked him to.
He’d lied to him. Devon had lied to him. All those pretty words about love and devotion and he’d told Stacy exactly where they were. Connor’s heart sped up and he could feel his face getting hot. Someone would be showing up soon to tear Devon away from him, to drag both of them right back into that cesspool of a town. The phone cracked from where he was holding it in a death grip.
Well, if that was what Devon wanted, then Connor would let whoever showed up take his corpse back to town. Wasn’t he so nice?
He dropped the phone and stormed up the stairs, throwing the door open as Devon sprung off the bed, looking terrified. “Hi, honey,” Connor said sweetly as can be, “There something you want to tell me?”
He slammed the door shut.
—
Fuck.
“What are you talking about?” Devon steadied himself on the bed frame, trying to guess the distance between himself and the window behind him.
Connor’s skin was turning gray, fingers warping into razor sharp claws, and blue eyes that glowed just as bright as the weeds in his chest. All of Devon’s work had been erased.
Connor's handsome face twisted into a sneer. “Don’t play dumb. Funny thing about using someone else’s phone, you can see what they do with it.” He took a step forward and Devon stepped back on trembling legs.
They felt like Bambi, only if they fell, they’d end up ripped to shreds.
“I didn’t tell her anything. We just talked–”
“Stop fucking lying to me!” Connor lunged and Devon barely got out of the way leaving Connor getting to his feet  in the splinters of the bedside table.
He scrambled closer to the door.
“I spent four years of my life helping you, loving you, and now you’re just abandoning me?” Connor sounded wrecked, genuinely hurt because of something Devon did–No, it wasn’t Connor. Not really. He needed to stay strong.
“I’m not abandoning you! But you’re not yourself!”
“For the first time, I really am myself.”
Devon tried to duck again but Connor was too quick. His claws dug into Devon’s arm tearing open flesh and spilling blood as he struggled. Using his arm as leverage, Connor threw him to the ground, straddling him and wrapping a hand around his throat. Blood ran down Devon’s neck as he gasped for air.
He had a mocking smile. “Are you scared, sweetheart?”
Terrified, but like hell were they letting Connor kill them. A frenetic energy pooled in their chest, crushing their lungs and sending electricity through his bones. They shoved at Connor’s shoulders as hard as they could, sending him flying across the room.
Devon coughed and gagged as Connor growled and swore from where he’d–the Power–had thrown him. Strength that wasn’t his own still coursed through him as he rolled on to his knees and dragged himself onto the bed.
Connor was standing, only held back by an invisible wall that Devon could already feel the cracks of. Five minutes, max.
Their chest felt like it was going to explode and they wanted to cry. If they died again, and if Connor was ever healed he would hate himself forever. They would never see their friends again, never shove Noah down a (very small) flight of stairs. What the hell could he do?
Devon opened his mouth and started talking.
“Connor, please. I know we didn't have that much time together, but I know this isn’t you. You’re kind and selfless, maybe a little too much, even when the world has been fucking awful to you. You let total strangers into your house because you believed the best of them. You forgave Noah and gave him a home even after what he did. And you stayed.” Connor watched him curiously as Devon stood up and staggered over to him. “You stayed by my side for four years when I was nothing but wisps of emotion and memories. Even though it ripped you apart. You mean everything to me. It feels crazy, but I know there is no one else in the world for me. I only want you.”
Devon paused right in front of the invisible wall that had been eroding with every word, every step. Connor looked almost lost. They raised a trembling hand to cup his face. Connor closed his eyes, though they still glowed behind the lids. “Devon…?”
“Right here, baby.” He stepped into Connor and held him, Connor’s arms came up hesitantly around him. Now that they were so close, Devon could see that the weeds weren’t as bad as he’d thought. They glitched, going from their shrunken size to fully grown and back like they couldn’t decide how big they should be. “And I’m not scared. Not of you. I’m going to help you, and whatever happens after will happen. Whatever you want, I’ll always be here.” Right after swinging back to help his friends fend off the latest Power bullshit, but it would be the last time. After this, the both of them deserved to never be bothered again.
Devon reached a hand between them and placed it over the weeds. They’d been scared of them but now they knew the weeds were nothing more than an infection, hurting the man he loved.
Devon let his own Power tangle in the weeds and crush.
Connor gasped and fell into them. Devon’s own knees buckled under the supernatural strain and instant exhaustion but he would stand it. Connor tried to move away but Devon kept them close. “I’m sorry. I love you.”
As the weeds disintegrated into nothing but a few stray particles, Connor collapsed with only Devon holding him up. His heart was beating a little too fast, and all the physical parts of being a Horror were still there, but he was alive. Only the barest traces of the corruption lingered.
Devon tried to step back to the bed but his legs gave out and he ended up on the floor with Connor’s dead weight pinning him.
Their mind spun as they stared at the ceiling. If the corruption did rebuild itself and Connor killed them, they hoped they’d sleep through it.
The world went dark then quiet.
…
Small sounds filtered in. A terrified voice. Car keys. An engine turning over.
…
Devon blinked to see the inside of the Camaro. A still gray Connor in the driver’s seat. A map that he couldn’t read on the phone. The sun was slowly sinking in the sky. It was pretty.
…
Devon gasped awake. A forest and small shops and too few light posts. Bandages wrapped around his arm and neck.
“Devon?” Connor asked, glancing over at them.
They blinked at him. Devon could feel the Power. It was a deeper infection than the one he’d felt in Connor. Rotten and pulsing and furious.
“How close are we to the cabin?”

the next chapter ship talk (so far)
have i told you guys i already ship vikram and connor because they held hands in the sneak peek and lysa responded to this by rolling her eyes and saying "great, a bromance is forming." their shipname is Viknor and i have already made them a playlist I have other reasons to ship them as well - and I'm also not alone in being excited for their dynamic specifically. The entire audience at ElectricCon gasped out loud when they held hands and seemed to get along so well off the bat.
Because if you're familiar with Electric Entertainment shows like everyone in that audience was, you know they have tropes that repeat across their shows. One of those major tropes is that the two main male characters don't get along at first, and then pretend not to get along even when they become so close they would die for each other. They put on the whole bicker like an old married couple routine. (Jake and Ezekiel, Eliot and Hardison, Garrett and Janzo.) So the entire audience gasped and screeched when Vikram and Connor held hands for a prolonged period of time and smiled like giddy idiots the whole time and then proceeded to seem to get along well in the rest of the trailer because this is flipping the usual Electric Entertainment formula on it's head. Connor and Vikram aren't going to pretend to dislike each other out of some sense of pride, that isn't their characters. And on the flipside, Lysa and Charlie as the two main female characters seem to be the more standoffish and emotionally distant characters, because of respective traumas. (Lysa losing her parents at a young age and Charlie being rejected from the Library once before. This is her last chance to prove herself. Yes I also already ship Lysa/Charlie as well they are called Charlysa.)
They seem to gravitate to each other instantly, which makes sense when you consider the context of their characters and where they each are in their lives. Connor was a historian who was thrown out of academia for believing in magic and the library's existence, and it's implied his family and the rest of society thinks he's crazy. He's been reduced to being a thief by night and a conspiracy theory content creator by day. (He was literally livestreaming himself breaking into the castle ruins lmfao we have our first youtuber librarian its great) Then here comes Vikram, bursting into Connor's life and bringing the truth about magic and the Library being real with him. He literally bursts into Connor's life at his lowest, loneliest point and gives him all the answers and validation that he isn't crazy that he's ever wanted. (The way Connor and Lysa meet Vikram honestly reminded me of how Eve meets Flynn.) Meanwhile, from Vikram's perspective, he is suddenly stranded in the far future alone and everyone he's ever known is dead and gone. He's told he's not allowed to return so he's now doomed to be a fish out of water in a world where he doesn't belong for the rest of his life, never to see his loved ones again. So far, Charlie seems annoyed with his refusal to listen to her so far from what we've seen, and Lysa is emotionally standoffish and upset that she's even having to deal with magic because she hates the unknown and unpredictable. Of course we already know they will all soften and warm up to each other and become attached to each other, but it's pretty obvious that Connor is the first real true friend that will be easy to talk to that Vikram has in this new time. So, all that considered, it's not surprising they get along so well so quickly they're literally holding hands like they're about to skip off together in the first few episodes.

(this post is just me talking about which character dynamics interest me the most therefore what i'm most excited to ship both platonically and romantically, not saying I think they are going to make it canon. i enjoy shipping regardless of canon, although these two dynamics being canon would make me happy, but i can also see other variations between this group becoming a thing)
