FOTD #101 : conifer blueing bracket! (postia caesia)
the conifer blueing bracket is a bracket fungus in the family fomitopsidaceae. it is a wood rot that usually grows on pine !! it has been reported in europe (most commonly britain & ireland), north america & some parts of asia.
the big question : can i bite it?? some sources call it edible - but, most declare the edibility unknown.

p. caesia description :
"the fruitbodies are typically 1 to 5cm across & up to 1cm thick, & the upper surface is covered in fine hairs & radial wrinkles that create a slightly wavy margin. the upper surface is white initially but develops a blue-grey tinge as it matures, & it also blues fairly soon after being handled. the pores are white and spaced 4 to 6 per mm."

  Conifer Blueing Bracket (Postia caesia)
With its often conspicuous bue tinge and the peculiar pores, this species is not easily confused with any other polypore.
Though the species is common and widespread, it is uncommun to find it in larger numbers in the same location.

Kinship (alternatively, family!)
First piece of 2017 is a pretty personal one! I’m actually happy with this, too.
Mushrooms/fungi hold a very special place in my heart, and are so important to me, spiritually and personally! I have trouble putting it into words, but those who know me might understand! So for today, I decided to do something more personal, and sketches some mushrooms from our photos from hiking trips.
They are: Sulphur shelf/chicken of the woods (left side), elm oysters (middle-bottom), honey mushrooms (middle), hexagonal-pored polypore (middle-right, on branch) and conifer blueing bracket fungus (Postia caesia) (bottom-right, on branch)
