Era bellissima – ma questo, in fondo, le pareva futile. Piuttosto: era avvenente e avventata, amava dissiparsi, frequentare l’anomalia. Aveva 32 anni, s’era sposata due volte, divorziando dopo neanche un anno – la prima volta, ventenne, con Mickey Rooney, l’altra con Artie Shaw –, risultava essere la moglie di Frank Sinatra, era il 1954, ma in Spagna, edotta all’arte dai tori da Ernest Hemingway, si accompagnava a Luis Miguel Dominguín, il divin torero. Labbra carnali, fossa sacra nel mento, occhi fieri, la Gardner pareva indomabile. La ferì un toro, appunto, e la cicatrice la rese immortale. Pochi anni prima aveva recitato in The Snows of Kilimanjaro, insieme a Gregory Peck, tratto dal più bello e fatale dei racconti di Hemingway; nel 1957, insieme a Tyrone Power, diede vita alla riduzione di Fiesta. Eppure, nonostante Hemingway avesse una passione per lei, lei, inafferrabile – non contano gli uomini che con prestanza posso dire di averla ‘avuta’, non avendola – amava un altro.

  Robert Graves & famiglia con Ava Gardner

Robert Graves stava a Maiorca dal 1929: “È un paradiso. Ma si può sopportare un paradiso?”, gli aveva detto Gertrude Stein. A lui garbava fare il demone in paradiso, il poeta recluso nella propria barbarica dimora. Dal 1946 vi si era piantato definitivamente. Poeta poligrafo, aveva finito per rappresentare l’indole della poesia: giocava a fare il mago, l’uomo che con una parola può scalfire i cieli. Io, Claudio e La Dea Bianca gli garantivano una fama straordinaria. In un giorno del 1954, nell’ardore spagnolo, fu preda di una delle rare incarnazioni della Dea Bianca: Ava Gardner.

Lui stava lavorando all’enciclopedica raccolta dei Miti greci, lei l’aveva scambiato per un accademico. L’età poneva distanze: il poeta aveva sessant’anni, pur animato da una certa bulimica bramosia (due mogli gli avevano dato otto figli, le amanti superavano quel numero). “Non mi prenda per un accademico, un antropologo, un esperto di mitologia: non lo sono. Sono uno che ha ottimo naso e discreto tatto. Penso di aver scoperto connessioni, tra i miti, invisibili a molti. Le facoltà classiche mi odieranno e riceverò critiche molto altezzose”, le scrisse, con ipnotica spavalderia. Il ‘gancio’ era Ricardo Sicre: combattente repubblicano, convertitosi in spia a servizio degli inglesi e poi degli americani, aveva conosciuto Graves nel 1940. I suoi servigi furono ben remunerati: negli anni Cinquanta divenne imprenditore e uomo di relazioni. Amico di Hemingway e Dalí, di Orson Welles e di Churchill, una fotografia lo ritrae con Ava all’arena, a Madrid. Pur ricco di fama, Graves aveva bisogno di soldi. Sicre poteva fargli ottenere qualche incarico nel cinema. Le buone intenzioni produssero fumo, ma l’incontro con la Gardner fu una fiammata.

L’esito estetico più importante dell’incontro fu un racconto, A Toast for Ava Gardner, pubblicato sul “New Yorker” nel 1958, con una ribalta italiana per Theoria, trent’anni dopo (come Un brindisi per Ava Gardner: lo recuperiamo insieme alle poesie del sommo Graves?). Le poesie che Graves dedica alla sua musa non sono granché (“Ava Gardner mi trascinò/ angelo alato perché mi inginocchi/ al suo fianco mentre attraversiamo gli Stati Uniti…”), ma le lezioni di poesia – i materiali sono le lettere di Graves custodite St John’s College di Oxford – impartite all’attrice (“poteva finalmente dormire, studiare lo spagnolo, nuotare e consultarmi per completare la sua disordinata educazione lirica”, scrive, ospitandola a casa, nel febbraio del 1956) sono interessanti. “Colpire una grata in cerca di pepite d’oro può essere un lavoro frustrante. Le poesie sono come le persone: pochissime sono autentiche. La poesia non va capita, ma goduta, perché la poesia è tale se ha un significato esatto, immediato e semplice solo per te, e acquista senso ogni volta che viene letta”. Per qualche anno, si frequentarono, di continuo, a Madrid, a New York, a Londra. Gli amici di Graves, consapevoli delle sue ansie erotiche, mormoravano; lui li ghigliottinò, “Ava viene da me dopo Natale: siamo intimi, certo. Ma non puoi sapere quanto mi tranquillizzi non essere innamorato di lei”, scrisse a uno di loro.

Nel 1962 Ava è l’ospite d’onore a un compleanno del poeta: la femminilità trascinante obbliga ogni uomo al dato primo & ultimo, alla spacconeria – cioè, all’astio della nudità –, a una virilità di latta. “Ava si è accoppiata con un caporale della Guardia Civile. È un buon segno. Ora possiamo contrabbandare e uccidere chi ci pare”, scrive il poeta all’amico comune, Sicre. Ava godeva ad essere il centro di ogni illazione. Nel 1964, all’amico poeta, in Sicilia, sul set de La Bibbia: “Molto spesso, quando sono triste, ti scrivo, ma non ti spedisco nulla. Caro Robert, oggi ho cercato di spiegare a qualcuno che ricevere le tue lettere mi compensa di tutte le stronzate di questo film. Invece di sentirmi inutile e incapace, mi sento forte. È bello trovare qualcuno che amo e ammiro che mi dedica così tanto tempo, togliendomi dalla frenesia della vita di ogni giorno”. D’altronde, Graves si sentì in dovere di fare di Ava la propria confidente, denunciando una prestanza immortale, immorale. Parla, così, delle giovani muse: Margot Callas, Cindy Lee, “che aveva pugnalato il primo marito, diceva che era stato come infilare un coltello in una torta”, Juli Simmons, diciassettenne, “il nostro amore è particolare: lei non ha perso la verginità. Né fisica né spirituale”. Nel 1969 Ava Gardner e Robert Graves sono immortalati a New York: lui, il patriarca della poesia, la accarezza, come fosse una sua immaginazione, una creatura priva di corruzione. Il poeta, infine, fu falciato dal male, preferì il ritiro spagnolo. Nella casa che aveva ospitato Alec Guinness e Ben Gurion, Kingslay Amis e Michael Cane, un giorno, nel 1981, arrivò Jorge Luis Borges. Del poeta diede una descrizione commossa: “L’alto corpo continuava a compiere i suoi doveri sebbene non vedesse, né sentisse, né articolasse parola; l’anima era sola. Pensai non ci avesse riconosciuti, ma nel salutarlo mi strinse la mano e baciò quella di María Kodama… La moglie gli dava da mangiare col cucchiaio”. Dal 1950, Graves era stato nominato diverse volte per il Nobel: nel 1966 la candidatura pareva pronta, potente, ma l’alloro, per sua natura ingiusto, andò allora a Shmuel Agnon e a Nelly Sachs.

In un ottimo articolo edito su “El País”, Cuando Graves encontró a su diosa, Josep Massot ricostruisce i rapporti tra il poeta e la divina Gardner. “La prima volta, Robert Graves nacque a Wimbledon, il 24 luglio di 125 anni fa. La seconda volta accadde sulle Somme, nel cimitero di Bazentin, il 20 luglio del 1916. La scheggia di una granata tedesca gli perforò il polmone e il tenente colonnello Crawshay informò i genitori della morte del coraggioso, aitante capitano della Royal Welch Fusiliers. Il poeta sopravvisse, e non perse occasione per iniziare a fondare la propria mitologia”. Mirabile il finale. “La seconda morte, inappellabile, di Graves accadde nel 1985. Ava Gardner, pur fragile di salute, ruppe il proprio isolamento e si precipitò a Londra, per assistere ai funerali del poeta. La videro in piedi, per molto tempo, esposta alle intemperie, pioveva quel giorno: qualcuno le si fece incontro, con un ombrello”.

Ava Gardner era una divina, e come tale appariva, a tratti, come un vampiro. Ci sono donne che non si danno, prendono. In lei, può darsi, Graves riconobbe una delle rare presenze della Dea Bianca: “Un profeta come Mosè, o come Giovanni Battista, o Maometto, parla in nome di una divinità maschile e afferma, ‘Così dice il Signore’. Io non sono il profeta della Dea Bianca e mai oserei affermare, ‘Così dice la Dea’. Ma la semplice dichiarazione, piena di amore, ‘Nessuno più grande, nell’universo, della Triplice Dea’, è stata sempre fatta, implicitamente o esplicitamente, da tutti i poeti della Musa da quando ebbe inizio la poesia”. Il problema, più sottile, è a chi dedicarsi. Un poeta dedica sempre a qualcuno le proprie opere – i libri, pur per tutti, sono scritti soltanto per uno, l’unico. (d.b.)
