“Un-hoooooly shit!” Toby exclaims as he circles around Ellie with his nose uncomfortably in her personal space. Her nose wrinkles lightly when she smells the heavy Fern Flower smoke smell on him. “Nothing! Literally nothing! I’ve never smelled anything like it! Xi, you gotta smell this!”
“I’m sorry about him sweetie,” Ximena sighs as shakes her head and places a hand on her hip. “I would be lying if I say he isn’t usually like this. My name’s Ximena and that guy there is Toby.”
“I’m Ellie. And it’s cool. I get it a lot,” Ellie grimaces a little when she feels the tip of Toby’s nose touch her cheek and she pushes his face away from her. “Although not usually this close. Is his nose broken or something?”
“It will be if he doesn’t take a step back,” Colt replies from somewhere behind her as he closes the door behind his office and stands next to Ellie. He looks at Ximena and Toby and gives them a nod. “Both of you leave for the nightclub. I have a guest tonight.”
Colt sends her a smirk and Ellie rolls her eyes before she waves goodbye to Ximena and Toby. The moment the shop’s doors close behind them, Colt turns to Ellie with a smug smile as he leans back to look at her from head to toe. Taking careful note of the red leather jacket and short black shirt she’s wearing.
“I like that you’re curious,” Colt smiles as he looks back up at her face and subtly licks his lips. “Although self-preservation doesn’t seem to be your best trait.”
Ellie scoffs and pushes past him to enter his office. “I could take you on Colt. I haven’t used my magic the entire day.”
“Aw, saving yourself up for me? I’m touched,” Colt snickers as he follows her and closes the door behind him with a click of the lock.
Ellie immediately drops herself on the couch with a heavy sigh as she leans back and tilts her head to the ceiling. Colt raises an eyebrow at her, wanting to ask about the sigh, but he stops himself when he realizes that he’ll need alcohol first if he’s going to be talking to her about anything.
“Anything new to share to the class?” Colt asks as opens the mini fridge and throws her a bottle of beer. Ellie catches it and eyes the bottle suspiciously. Colt scoffs as he takes a seat next to her, peels off bottle cap like a sticker and tosses it on the coffee table in front of them. “Do you really think I’m gonna make you drink blood?”
“Mm,” Ellie agrees as she gathers her magic between her middle finger and thumb and flicks open the bottle cap which causes a loud pop to fill the room and the bottle cap to shoot up and embed itself on his office ceiling.
Colt frowns as he looks up at the bottle cap’s round indent on the ceiling. “You witches really need to understand spatial awareness beyond your magical bubble.”
“Oh we understand. We just don’t care,” Ellie smiles smugly as she drinks her beer. Colt rolls his eyes but he can’t help the small smile that tugs on his lips. Ellie drinks about half of it and places it down on the coffee table before she uses her magic and flicks her wrist to bring up a projected investigation board of the Kilat murder. Colt leans in, still absolutely at awe at how crisp and clear the image’s she projects, as his eyes glow with gold while he quickly takes in the information in front of him.
“This is what I’ve gathered so far. I looked into why a vampire or magical creature could possibly want from albularyo blood since that’s the only thing missing as of now but so far I haven’t found anything. It doesn’t give them any extra powers or anything so this murder is personally, not magically, motivated.”
“Yeah, we usually avoid drinking from magical creatures,” Colt scrunches his nose a little. “The blood tastes like metal. It’s gross,” Colt furrows his eyebrows at the look she gives him. “What? Why are you looking at me like that?”
Ellie opens her mouth, ready to explain to him what human blood tastes like but decides that it’s a losing battle and just shakes her head.
“Anyway, there was no forced entry in any of the doors, windows and portals. This is why I wasn’t so sure it was a vampire. Maybe a ghoul or a magical creature that can walk through solid objects? But Mr. Ernesto doesn’t mention any of those kinds of creatures as customers in his book.”
“Let me see the book.”
Ellie flicks her wrist and brings up a page the book. “Those crossed out are either dead, not currently in the country, or have been abducted by the fae. The rest I’ve interviewed and cleared of motive or had solid alibis during the time of the murder. I only have two left to question. Jason Shaw and a vampire named Tobias. Do you know anyone with that name? I’m having difficulties tracking them down.”
“No,” Colt replies. “But I’ll get my crew to ask around, it shouldn’t be that difficult.”
Ellie nods, a little relieved that that part of the investigation is handled by someone else. She’s already gotten a lot of heat and shit for stretching out this investigation into its second month. Mona, the head witch of her department, is being constantly pressured by the higher ups to hex the case as quickly as possible. Although Mona tries her best to keep them from interfering too much with Ellie’s work, she knows that it’s only going to be a matter of time before they forcefully stop the investigation.
“So you did all of this? In the last month?”
“Huh?” Ellie pulls herself out of her thoughts and turns to look at Colt who looks back at her with awe and disbelief. She shifts on her seat, suddenly feeling a little shy under his golden gaze, before she waves away the projected investigation board. “Uh yeah. It’s my first case after all. I need to show them that I can do this, even on my own. Nobody wanted to partner up with a half-witch.”
“This is your first case?” Colt whistles appreciatively as he leans back on the couch. “And you managed to rope me in, a Primordial, to help you. I’m impressed.”
“That was the easy part,” Ellie teases as she leans back on the couch next to him, her body suddenly feeling tired and achy. “It helps that my dad is a detective too. I got it from him.”
“Your…mortal dad?” Colt says cautiously, not really sure how to approach the conversation without insulting her for being a half-witch, but Ellie merely shrugs as if she’s heard the question a million times.
“Yeah. My mother was the witch,” She smiles fondly. “A great one too.”
Colt frowns. “Was?”
“Abducted by the fae five years ago.”
Colt grimaces a little, not really wanting to venture into his thoughts of what it’s like to be abducted by the fae. “She must’ve done something pretty shitty to anger the fae.”
“I wouldn’t know,” Ellie says as she turns to look at him, her eyes boring into his. “The Coven disowned my mother when she married my dad. The Agency was advised by the Coven not to investigate since she was not, lineage-wise, a witch anymore. So they didn’t.”
“Ah,” Colt says in realization. “So this is why you’re so stubborn about this case.”
She smirks as her eyes shine with mischief. “I’m a cliché after all.”
Colt nods, his body unconsciously leaning closer to hers. “Never thought about investigating it yourself?”
“I want to but can’t,” She shrugs and uses her magic to raise and swirl the rest of her beer on the coffee table. “I promised my dad I wouldn’t do it. That’s the only condition he had when I said I wanted to join the Agency. He investigated my mother’s abduction himself for two years—nearly drove him mad.”
“Ever want to just burn it down?” Colt says as his eyes glow with a golden fire, his voice tight and pained. “The whole of the Agency, right down to its foundation. Maybe then the creatures that deserved justice will finally get it.”
“And what about future cases like Ana’s?” Ellie sighs as she crosses her arms in front of her and the bottle of beer lands on the coffee table with a thump. “I hate it as much as you do and let me tell you, there’s a lot that needs to change in the Agency but there are good people fighting inside too. For people like Ana, me…you. That’s why I chose to stay, why I choose to fight. For now, at least.”
“You are so fucking annoying,” Colt says as he leans into her, his body magnetized to hers. “But I’m starting to realize that I like that.”
Ellie smirks as she leans her face closer to his. “Like I said, one of my better qualities.”
She doesn’t know who closed the gap—him or her—but it’s definitely as fiery and explosive as the kiss they shared in the nightclub nights before.
Ellie swings her legs over his lap, her lips glued to his, as Colt drops the bottle of beer with a thud on the floor in favor of gripping her hips tight in his hands. He pulls her down to his lap, her hips pressed against his, and she slips past a small moan against his lips and he easily pushes his tongue in to taste her.
She hurriedly pushes his jacket off of his shoulders and he moves his hand underneath her skirt to grip her thighs tight in his hand, his nails digging into skin.
“Fuck I want to taste you,” Colt groans as he fits his face into the side of her neck, his fangs lightly scraping her unblemished skin. “I’m curious. What does the blood of a half-witch taste like?”
Ellie lets out a small moan and delves her hands into his hair, gripping tight, before she grinds her hips against his. “Don’t know. Never had reviews.”
Colt chuckles at the tail end of a moan, his eyes lighting up in dark gold as he presses his lips on her racing pulse point. “Should I do the honors?”
Ellie smiles, opening her mouth to accept his invention, when the shrill sound of her ringtone breaks her out of his spell. She quickly untangles her limbs from his, her red lipstick smeared on her lips and her skirt pulled up her legs. She looks at Colt sitting on the couch, a smug and satisfied look on his face. He brings up his thumb and swipes the red lipstick she’s left on him as he bares his fangs in delight, his golden eyes never leaving her blues.
Ellie blushes, her face heating up at the image, as she clumsily digs through her red leather jacket to fish out her phone. “Uh yeah. Ellie—Detective Wheeler speaking. Yeah, Ingrid. No, I’m not busy. Just give me a sec,” She turns to look at Colt and holds the phone to her chest to cover the receiver. “I need to go.”
Colt frowns but recovers quickly and flicks his wrist to the door, his voice teasing and playful. “See you in four days, Miss Half a Witch.”
Ellie quickly exits the office door, pulling her skirt down as she walks, and makes her way out of the shop with her heart thumping hard and fast in her chest. She brings up the phone back to her ear and immediately pulls it away when she hears Ingrid’s loud voice.
“—can’t be serious! Was that Colt’s voice?!” Ingrid gushes, her voice shrill and high. “Ellie Wheeler you did not just sleep with a Primordial vampire!”
“I didn’t sleep with him!” Ellie defends as she hurriedly makes it to her car, buckles in her seatbelt and starts the engine before she drops her head on the steering wheel. “Just…tell me what you found Ingrid.”
“Nuh-uh you’re not getting away that easily. I expect all the dirty projections later!” Ingrid cackles as Ellie groans in exasperation before Ingrid’s voice drops to something serious. “Anyway, we finally got the approval to conduct an autopsy on the Kilat bodies and guess what we found?”
“Ingrid I literally wouldn’t be able to even if I tried, that’s your job.”
“What? Are you always this cranky after sex or is it just reserved for hot but rude vampires?” Ingrid laughs and Ellie glares at nothing. “Fine, anyway. So we found a huge cut to their femoral artery, that’s the vein behind your thigh. If a creature gets injured there—mortal or otherwise—you best expect to die of blood loss if left untreated. Not even a vampire’s saliva can stop blood loss that bad.”
“But wait,” Ellie scrunches her eyebrows and lifts her head off of the steering wheel. “You said there was no injury on the bodies.”
“Yeah, that’s the strange thing. The way the femoral artery was cut up should indicate a visible and pretty nasty injury—but we found nothing. I’ve asked around and no one has seen anything like this. It’s really weird.”
Ellie sighs as she kneads away the oncoming headache. “Thanks Ingrid, I’ll look into it more.”
“Yeah no problem,” Ingrid confirms before her voice lifts into something teasing and playful. “Now back to Colt. Was he like, you know? Hu—”
“Goodbye Ingrid,” Ellie cuts her off and tosses the phone on the passenger seat. She lets out a big sigh as she leans her head back on the seat. The possibilities swim in her head at the new information Ingrid has just presented her.
If the Kilat’s blood was drained by the femoral artery, what was with the vampire bite? And what would a creature do with close to ten liters of albularyo blood? Or did they just dump it out after the murders had been committed? If the end goal truly was just the murder, why go through all the trouble?
Ellie frowns. The possibility of the blood being dumped is there which means she’ll need a werewolf to help sniff out where the blood could’ve gone to. She could always ask Logan but she knows how iffy he is with blood and she certainly doesn’t want to push him to do things he doesn’t want to do. Logan’s already done enough for her for this case since he practically got her access to the Vault he’s supposed to be guarding.
Ellie sighs and starts her drive back to her apartment. For now, she’ll just follow the two leads she has. Maybe after a bottle of wine and a nice bubble bath, she’ll have a clearer head in four days when she’ll meet the next vampire on her list.

1. If you’re an author, how many WIPs do you currently have? (Be honest!)
Two, if I only count the ones that have at least part of an actual scene written for them and which I still intend to finish someday. (Because otherwise, they're not works in progress, are they? :P) Three if I count the one that's still in the idea stages but is starting to be fleshed out a bit more.
2. What’s next on your ‘to-read’ list? (Fan fiction or otherwise)
City of Stone and Silence by Django Wexler. Everyone, please give his books a try if you're into fantasy. They're so good. He's written for adults, middle grade, and YA, and all of it is fantastic. He's probably my second-favorite author atm (because I love Seanan McGuire and her writing too much to give the top spot to anyone else XD).
3. Do you prefer canonverse or AUs?
Yes.
(Seriously, I like both. I guess my very favorite would be canon divergence—where we're still in the canon universe but one or more things change)
4. What fandom’s/ship’s fan fiction do you read the most?
I don't think there's a clear winner? I bounce around a lot because I read too fast and am too picky with my preferences for one fandom to sustain me. I guess out of the fics I'm following that are still updating at least somewhat frequently, it'd probably be more-or-less a tie between BnHA and Trollhunters/Tales of Arcadia. But that only means, like, 5 – 6 fics each compared to 3 – 4 for most other fandoms, so. Not a big difference. ^^;
5. What’s a crackship you love?
I…can't think of any. ^^;
6. What’s the last thing you read that made you laugh?
I don't really remember. Maybe the newest October Daye book? Tybalt can usually make me smile even if he wasn't in this one much.
7. What’s the last thing you read that made you cry?
No idea. ^^; Probably a fanfic, but beats me which one it was.
8. Bed sharing or roommates AU?
Hmm…roommates, I guess?
9. Fake dating or arranged marriage?
Probably arranged marriage.
10. Mutual pining or enemies to friends to lovers?
Enemies to friends to lovers.
11. Kid fic or childhood friends?
This…depends a lot on how you define kidfic. If it's "the characters raise a kid together" then…I'm not all that interested in either, but I'd probably take childhood friends, depending on the plots of the individual stories. If it's "the adult characters when they were kids", then…they're almost the same thing, unless you're writing adult characters who grew up as childhood friends, and either way I have no real preference for either. If you define kidfic to include de-aging fics, then I'll take kidfic. Such a surprise, given my current WIP, I'm sure. :P
12. Friends with benefits or secret dating?
I guess secret dating, though I'm not fond of either.
13. Exes or established relationship?
Established relationship.
14. (For authors) Post a line of dialogue from one of your WIPs without context.

Robin's neck prickled. That timing had been far too convenient. The librarian had likely known where the book was the entire time, if there was even a book at all.
(This is technically the last line I edited; the last new line I wrote was in the chapter I just posted and I have no idea which one it would be)
16. Describe your WIP that currently has the highest word count.
That would be Dissonant Echoes, so…The Straw Hats arrive on a mysterious island. Zoro disappears and comes back as a kid with strong negative reactions to the rest of the Straw Hats, and they have to find out what happened and try to fix things.
17. Describe a fic that is still in the ‘ideas’ stage.
A full AU, tentatively titled Praying to Embers. More-or-less modern times. Luffy and his friends come to an island on vacation (still working out which SHs come with him and which they'll meet there). They arrive just in time for a festival celebrating the island's god, Roronoa, and at the festival they meet Zoro, a local who Luffy ropes into being their tour guide. He's not very good at the guiding part, but Luffy's sure they'll be great friends, which is good for Zoro, because he's really going to need some friendly help soon, if he can learn to trust them before it's too late.
This is what I'll be writing after DE, barring a new idea taking me hostage unexpectedly.
18. Do you have a fic reading/writing routine?
Reading, not really, unless you count downloading fics to my kindle and doing most of my reading: in the bathroom, while waiting for laundry or food to be done, when I’m supposed to be sleeping, etc. Well, that and reading on the computer, trying to see the screen past my armful of big fluffy kitty while he kneads my neck and shoulders and arms and face. >.<; Writing, I like to have a cup of tea before I start, I guess? And usually some music.
19. What’s your favorite character headcanon?
I…can't think of any right now. ^^;
20. Do you have a favorite fanfic or author? If so, tag them/post a link and share the love!
I don't think I have a single favorite. I'm not sure I could even narrow it down to a half dozen, haha. But I'll link a few fics (not going to tag anyone because I don't know everyone's tumblr, if they even have one, plus that would be putting myself out there a bit more than I feel comfortable with atm. If one of the authors of these fics see this, I love your work and I'm sorry for being such a shy anxious mess ^^; ).
Going to keep it to one per fandom so this doesn't get obnoxiously long, though for most of them (looking at BnHA, Detective Conan, Coco, and ToA in particular), you can assume there are at least one or two other fics I like just as much as these.

Happy Tuesday!
This week I am reading:
Tokyo Ghoul: Re Volume 5 by Sui Ishida
King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo
Gemina by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff
and The Complete Sherlock Holmes Volume 1 by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
And I finished:
Another by Yukito Ayatsuji and Hiro Kiyohara
Tokyo Ghoul is staying good and I’m loving the development! The first DVD is out now so I’ll be able to cement the details in my mind even more by watching it and reading it.
I am thoroughly enjoying King of Scars! I was a little wary since this is a direct sequel to the Shadow and Bone trilogy, and I had a preference for Six of Crows, but I am falling in love with it. I’m in the second half and can’t wait to just devour the rest! And this is the book that @books-take-flight and I are doing for our book club! It’s been a great read and a great continuation of our GrishaVerse-athon!
Gemina is going great, I’m glad I’m rereading it, since there are lots of elements that I had forgotten about, namely big plot points and the connections to the first book, Illuminae.
Sherlock Holmes is going well, just slowly. I am reading “The Red-Headed League” for possibly the first time. It hasn’t seemed too familiar yet. But it may ring some bells further in.
MINI REVIEW FOR ANOTHER
It was great finally getting to read this book after years of loving the anime. Without giving too much away, this is a manga (and novel series, but I haven’t gotten to those yet) about a boy that moves to a small town for cleaner air and other health reasons. When he arrives he notices that his class is overly secretive and overall strange. In his attempts to understand the situation he discovers that classmate Mei Misaki is someone who is not there to anyone else in the class.
Plot wise, this book is extremely similar to the anime. Style wise it’s very different. A couple of the characters look vastly different between the book and the show, namely our protagonist Sakakibara.

In the manga he is very sullen and seems be going for an “angsty” exterior. He’s more laid back and friendly in the anime.
The pacing is also very different as we don’t see many of the deaths in the manga, we just hear about them.
Finally, my favorite difference is the very end. The anime includes a scene at the very end that involves Reiko and the protagonist Koichi Sakakibara. I’ve had theories about this scene, and while this scene doesn’t exist in the manga, they make a passing comment that’s a direct nod to that scene, and all but confirms my theory. Unfortunately, this is extreme spoiler territory, so I can’t say it outright, but if you’re an Another fan like me, jump into my ask and we can talk about it!
Thank you for your patience on this weeks update! I haven’t read much the last few weeks, due to spring cleaning and vacation. And while my spring cleaning has only just begun I do hope to be able to read more!
Also, it’s PRIDE MONTH! I’m going to be reading quite a few LGBT works this month so please look forward to mini reviews of what I read. It will probably mostly be manga, as I have a hard time staying from my list of novels to read. But King of Scars has some LGBT representation so please look forward to reading about that!

Smol RBC-senpai is so cute! Not as much as smol RBC herself, but…yeah. I wonder if smol WBC is around as well…?
This story’s a lil’ hackneyed, but nothing that doesn’t twang the heartstrings a little…
I love how the sensei WBC still has blood on his arm as he walks away.
The banter between the NK and the Killer T cells really gets to me. It’s so good!

Where did Teruhi get the cloth for Yajirou’s (I presume) head…?
I find it interesting how he (Onitakemaru) dragged the old man merchant with him and yet went to the extent of plundering the treasure without the intent of keeping it. It’s like he did the plundering as a show of strength…
I’ve realised that even though Planet With’s been getting better and better, this show’s starting to sink. Sure, the staff on this show are giving me everything I asked for, but the shine of a new anime is starting to wear off…That montage just proved why it sunk – it’s more willing to go for a quality drop in the middle of the plot.
It was way too dark in the scene that revealed Teruhi’s face being up against Kuchii’s. It took me a bit to realise that was happening…
The water in that river looks a bit odd.
“Akimado firefly” gets me zero relevant Google results.
Now that I think of it, Nagamine’s kinda hot, LOL.
Come to think of it, I still haven’t got a bead on whether Teruhi has the hots for Kuchii or not. If it’s the former, then this show would be quite disappointing. Plus, are these invaders all Mongols from China, Mongols from Mongolia (duh) or Mongols from Europe? They did have gunpowder, which is from China, but they also said the Mongolians had invaded Europe at this point…

Karandi mentioned how she loved how faithful this show was to the past folklore of supernatural creatures and now they’re using that to the show’s advantage…huh.

I find it interesting Vlad chose to use Chinse martial arts. Either Toryu taught him, he learnt how to do them from Rijan or he learnt from Chinese people over many, many years. I think the second option is the most probable.

(I just wanna preface this saying that there are some anime that are absolutely should be in my top 10 but i’m not counting them, being Lupin III, One Piece, Dragon Ball/DBZ, Detective Conan etc.) 
Well that’s a tough one lol... I know my top 5 but... top 10? gotta think hard about that one

Mobile Fighter G Gundam: In my 25 years of life it may singlehandedly be the dumbest anime I’ve ever watched but it is a MASTERPIECE lmao where else can you find a show where a “regular human being” can just kick away a skyscraper and then his master summons his gundam, his master’s horse, and his master’s horse’s gundam and just think “this is fine”
8. Tenchi Muyo: Tenchi Universe: Okay so this is my most recent addition but it once I started watching it it felt like i was an incomplete human being before it lol. My friend absolutely wasn’t kidding when he said this is THE harem anime

IT’S MAY Y’ALL. Even though I’ll still be doing blog posts in May, it’s not going to be as hectic, as I finally finished my second year of university and have decided to take it easy after a very packed April.
I’m also doing things a little different with my wrap up this month by getting rid of star ratings. I watched a video on it, and I just feel like I’d rather people go by my actual comments on the books than look at the rating and decide that covers all my thoughts. I still have star ratings on Goodreads for my own personal use, but I’m doing my best to start writing proper summaries of my thoughts from now on!
READING WRAP UP
  Tropic of Serpents by Marie Brennan– a solid follow up to the first book, although there’s a startling lack of dragons in a series about a dragon naturalist! Definitely go into this one expecting a lot more politics than book 1, and Isabella starting a lot of Drama.
The Elementals by Michael McDowell– such an amazing horror novel! McDowell is so underrated for a writer who wrote predominantly in the seventies and eighties, and it’s so tragic how young he died. 
Princess Jellyfish Volume 1 by Akiko Higashimura– such a disappointing read. It’s really problematic, to the point where it drastically impacted my enjoyment of the plot, especially when I’ve got so many other more recent manga I could be enjoying more than this. 
Fullmetal Alchemist Volume 8 by Hiromu Arakawa– speaking of next tier manga… holy shit. I am so scared of volume 9 and finishing this series, it’s meant so much to me and it’s really helped me immerse myself fully in reading manga. 
Lumberjanes Volume 9 by Shannon Watters– Barney is a precious precious bean and I love them! This is a roller derby volume, and it was pretty great: I’ve been a fan of roller derby since I first watched Whip It, and this volume was super entertaining!
Lumberjanes Volume 10 by Shannon Watters– wholesome volume where the parents come to visit their kids. I do feel really sad for Molly, but it was nice seeing everyone else’s parents! 
Lumberjanes: A Midsummer Night’s Scheme by Nicole Andelfinger– this was a fun bonus one shot comic. However, it does get very cheesy and it’s whole message is just so obvious  that them explaining it was very much unneeded. 
Smut Peddler Volume 1 by Various Authors– this is a fun anthology of smut comics that I super enjoyed reading. E.K. Weaver’s comic is by far my favourite, and it’s only after I realised that it was a one shot about a character in her webcomic! 
Rumple Buttercup BY Matthew Gray Gubler– a very cute children’s graphic novel about loving yourself and finding acceptance! 
Smut Peddler Volume 2 by Various Authors– this wasn’t as good as volume 1, but I still read it really quickly and had a fun time looking at the different art styles and methods of story telling!
Dream Daddy by Various Authors– there are so many good moments in this comic, it’s so great. Highly recommend if you’ve played the game, and if you haven’t, check it out, it’s real fun! Damien and Robert’s issue was by far my favourite as they were my favourites in the game too.
Tokyo Ghoul Volume 5 by Sui Ishida– finally, I’m starting to enjoy Tokyo Ghoul. It took a while this volume to actually understand what the hell was happening, but once I did, it really did become something I enjoyed.
Rick and Morty VS Dungeons and Dragons by Patrick Rothfuss– A decent enough read, although there is way too much dialogue and exposition on every page. The font is really small, too, so reading it was a hassle. 
Meddling Kids by Edgar Cantero– this book was actually terrible and I have a whole review discussing my issues and how harmful it is!
Jackass! Volume 1 by Scarlet Beriko– This is a funny, sweet manga about fetishes and blackmail. It has an age gap romance between an 18 year old and a doctor, and there is some transphobic bullying/weird treatment of bullying being okay if the person has a crush on you, but the main relationship is great, and the MC has a really lovely relationship with his older sister. 
Batwoman: Elegy by Greg Rucka– Chronicles the Alice Batwoman arc from Detective Comics, as well as giving the backstory for Kate. It’s so great having a badass DC hero who is a lesbian, whose storyline also touches on homophobia in the ‘don’t ask don’t tell’ era of the military. Glad I finally got to this!
Sparrowhawk #5 by Delilah S Dawson– a really disappointing series conclusion overall. I knew I should’ve just stopped reading after the first issue and I wasn’t feeling it, and I honestly wish I had after such a dissatisfying conclusion. Others may enjoy this, but it really wasn’t for me.
Assassination Classroom Volume 1 by Yusei Matsui— an amazing series starter! Already really moving with a teacher who spends all his time encouraging his students despite being a threat to the entire world they have to kill within the year. I have a feeling this will become a new favourite.
I’ll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara– really great non-fiction read written by a journalist who played a massive part in the resurgence of talk surrounding the Golden State Killer. You also get some of her life story, and by the end I was almost in disbelief that the author had already died by the time her work was published. I will say it did drag at points, especially in the parts not written by McNamara that had to be finished after she died, but overall a really thorough look into the cases and the victims.
The Woods Volume 5 by James Tynion IV– this series is- dare I say it- picking up? I still have issues with the representation and the fact that most of the main characters to have died, especially in this volume, were POC while the white characters are in the exact same situation and survive. Will have to see if this carries on. 
Backwards & In Heels by Alicia Malone– this started off strong, and I found out so much about women in film and their presence in the industry since the creation of film in the 1800’s. However, by the end it got so repetitive and formulaic in the way information was presented that I started skimming. This is more of a coffee-table, occasional-read book when you fancy learning more about amazing women! Also, even though there is diverse rep and talk of lack of hiring of WOC and LGBT+ women in the industry, we also get the author praising white women earlier on in the book who took on roles where they did blackface and yellowface, which really dulled down the conversation in the latter half of the book. 
My Love Story!! Volume 6 by Kazune Kawahara– so GOOD. I got so emotional reading this volume, I ended up crying. This is by far one of my favourite manga series, I can’t recommend it enough. It follows tough-but-soft boy Takeo as he enters into a relationship with Yamato, cutest girl in the universe, with the support of his best friend Suna. Truly the PEAK of romantic comedy fiction. 
When the Sky Fell on Splendor by Emily Henry– emotional, hardhitting read about a group of friends who end up with superpowers after discovering a strange alien object. It’s very reminiscent of the film Super 8 in my head, and if you love stories about not only aliens but found families through friendship, highly recommend!
The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle– I just don’t think Sherlock Holmes is for me. I love the retellings and adaptations, and in theory, I’m invested in the murder mysteries, but I just think Doyle’s prose weighs it down and there’s always that underlying racism I don’t think is appropriate to even attempt to shake.

At the start of the month, I started bingeing Dead Meat videos, a channel entirely revolving around horror. My personal favourite series is the Saw kill count videos, and the movies that changed horror podcast episode James (the host) does with his girlfriend Chelsea (who is amazing)!
I finally watched season 2 of Stranger Things! I adore Steve, as always, and it was such a solid season (BOB). However I did have an issue with the needless rivalry that festered with Elle towards Max, season 3 better sort that and stop pitting girls against each other for no reason other than because of boys.
Zoe from Read by Zoe was on FIRE this month with some really great read-a-thon videos! I loved her 24 read-a-thon vlog especially, she read only books she enjoyed growing up and it all felt really nostalgic.
This is very much a personal one, but my favourite streamer returned to a podcast with the company he used to work for, and it was just…. so heartwarming to watch. I can’t believe he left four years ago! I’ve been watching this company since I was about fourteen, so it was so nice watching this, a long-awaited reunion.
Kat at paperbackdreams did an amaaaaazing video rant reviewing After by Anna Todd, and I loved it. In general Kat is a top tier booktuber for me, I highly recommend her videos as much as I can!

It is hard to tell with Universal Pictures, difficult to keep track of the myriad, seemingly endless horror films, especially during the 1930s and ’40s, at least one film a year.
The studio’s best sound films came in the ’30s, beginning with Dracula and Frankenstein, both in 1931.  Then followed The Old Dark House and The Mummy, the best two releases of that bumper crop year, 1932, which included at least four exceptional horror productions.  The Invisible Man, with its then amazing special effects, appeared in 1933.  The decade peaked in 1935 with The Bride of Frankenstein, not only a great horror film, but a great, milestone film, period.  And, to close the ’30s, Son of Frankenstein in 1939.
Although the horror film was still in vogue, the ’40s brought a discernible decline, both in the number of releases and, more crucially, in the quality of the films.  While interesting in its own right, The Invisible Man Returns (1940) was a pale sequel after its Claude Rains predecessor.  A high point, though, was The Wolf Man (1941), recalling the glories of the ’30s, and Lon Chaney, Jr.’s first stint as the tormented man-turned-werewolf, for, yes, “even a man who’s pure in heart and says his prayers at night . . . ”

Universal’s frequent turn to horror comedies had been highly successful in 1939 with Bob Hope’s The Cat and the Canary, and continued into the ’40s with The Invisible Woman (1940) and Hold That Ghost (1941), the first in the horror genre by comedy team Bud Abbott and Lou Costello.
There also emerged a trend, sometimes tepidly executed, toward the serious and the non-monster movie, more adult fare.  The Uninvited (1944) featured a mere filament of a floating ghost, which was dispatched with some stern words from non-horror star Ray Milland.  Another remake of The Phantom of the Opera (1943), now in color, starred Rains who wreaked havoc on an opera house.  And The Unseen (1945), an early take on the serial killer, showcased a human monster, with still more non-horror stars, Joel McCrea and Gail Russell.
In the 1950s Universal had abandoned Dracula, the Frankenstein monster, the werewolf and the Mummy.  In their places, from Universal and other studios, now came aliens from outer space and insects and cephalopods giganticized by radiation from man’s mishandling of things beyond his understanding. But this is entirely another offspring of the horror film, for discussion at another time.

Returning to the ’40s, by the time of The House of Frankenstein—the gang’s all here in this one except the Mummy!—the Dracula-Frankenstein-Wolf Man movies had so overlapped, intermingled and been repeatedly rehashed that little, if anything, new remained to say—or show.
This, however, didn’t prevent production on House, and for the possible few in the audience who might be unfamiliar with the stories, lectures were deemed necessary. George Zucco, in his brief screen time, explains, as if anew, the Dracula legend, and Boris Karloff informs new viewers and reminds the old ones about the Frankenstein monster’s origins and social interaction problems.  It could be assumed that if someone is so inclined to watch House, he would have seen the earlier films and been familiar with it all.
If there were any ways for these plots and stories to be reinvigorated, or at least done with a new approach, Universal didn’t use them.  House is, in fact, two movies.  The first—and better—half is about Dracula and the Frankenstein monster; the second half concerns another of poor, distressed Larry Talbot’s search for a cure for his hypertrichosis, this serious wolf transmutation.

Compared with most of the scores in these films, Hans J. Salter, now aided by an uncredited Paul Dessau, produces a less horror-sounding main title.  Eliminated, too, is that camera roaming the traditional fog-drenched woods, most memorable in The Wolf Man, now replaced by a matte of a non-threatening blur, which seems to complement the more lyrical moments of this particular main title.
Even before the fading of the final credit, “Directed by Erle C. Kenton,” the film has already begun.  A team of four horses is pulling a two-wagon caravan through a rainy night.  As the first wagon passes in a close-up—the distorted reflection of studio lights clearly visible on its smooth surface—painted on the side is “Professor Lampini’s Chamber of Horrors.”
The caravan, to be seen later, passes by the gates of Neustadt Prison, where, inside, a guard (Charles Wagenheim), accompanied by lumbering bassoons, is bringing food to one of the prisoners.  When the guard opens the small window of the cell door, an arm reaches out and grabs him in a choking hold.  “Now will you give me the chalk?”  Just like this man to demand chalk when a common criminal would have insisted on the keys to his cell!

Now with his chalk and blackboards, Doctor Gustav Niemann (Karloff) illustrates how Dr. Frankenstein might have gone wrong in severing the monster’s spinal cord at the base of the skull.  In an adjoining cell, his one student, so to speak, is hunchback Daniel (J. Carrol Naish), a low-key hysteric (if such is possible) who will soon be humbly calling Niemann “master” and be all too willing to do his bidding.
Niemann’s objective, as he tells Daniel, is to retrieve Dr. Frankenstein’s records from his castle which, keen viewers will remember, was flooded at the end of Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (1943), drowning both the monster and the Wolf Man.
Fate, with a little help from the screenplay, generates a timely storm and lightning brings down part of the prison.  Niemann and Daniel escape through the woods, only to come upon Lampini’s caravan, stuck in the mud.  What a coincidence!  With the escapees’ help, Professor Lampini (Zucco) frees the wagons.  When Lampini says he has no intention of going to Reigelberg, not to Vasaria where Niemann is headed, the doctor has Daniel kill the showman.
As the caravan rattles toward Reigelberg—all the carriages in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories “rattle”—Niemann assumes Lampini’s identity, telling Daniel, “All the protection of a traveling show . . . free to move on to those for whom I have unloving memories . . . ”  He has several scores to settle with old enemies, including the bürgemeister of Reigelberg, Hussman (Sig Ruman, best remembered as the barracks guard in Billy Wilder’s Stalag 17, 1953).

An effective screen dissolve and Hussman is playing chess with Police Inspector Arnz (a rather tame part this time around for horror staple Lionel Atwill).  Enter the bürgemeister’s son Karl (Peter Coe) and his American wife Rita (Anne Gwynne).  She invites them to a visiting show of horrors.  “Spooks, ghouls, vampires,” she jokes.
Apparently it is during Niemann’s first show that things turn uncomfortable.  About the time Hussman is thinking Niemann looks familiar, the mad doctor shows the audience Dracula’s skeleton, snug in its coffin, and boasts, “If I were to remove this stake . . . ”
Perhaps doubting the power of the Dracula curse, or because of a mental lapse, Niemann does absentmindedly remove the stake from between the skeleton’s ribs, lifting it toward Hussman.  But, then, he’s distracted.  In the first of Universal’s (John P. Fulton’s) special effects in the film, the skeleton materializes into the corporeal Dracula (John Carradine).  Dracula agrees to serve Niemann when the doctor threatens to reinsert the stake: “I’ll send your soul back to the limbo of eternal waiting.”

After Dracula has seduced Rita, enticing her with his finger ringer that sends her into a mesmeric trance, seeing people “who are dead yet alive,” Niemann destroys Dracula’s coffin and its nighttime occupant perishes in the sunlight.  End of the so-called “first movie.”
Now, onward, to Frankenstein’s castle with all haste!  And surprise!  Niemann and Daniel find, without much trouble, the bodies of the monster (Glenn Strange) and the Wolf Man (Chaney), frozen in the waters, though, strange, the surrounding climate is warm enough for shortsleeves!  (No, no—such incongruities aren’t questioned in horror films and the most faithful devotees of the genre take all these in stride.)
Niemann thaws the two bodies, again without much trouble, and promises to cure the Wolf Man of his full moon hang-up.  Meanwhile, Daniel has taken a fancy to gypsy girl Ilonka (Elena Verdugo), whose mind seems numb to the unsavory hunchback.  She is more interested in Talbot, and numb, again, now to this guy’s own problem.  Anyway, Talbot kills Ilonka during a werewolf spell, but she kills him with a silver bullet before she dies.

Will those who are left be disposed of as well?  Niemann has dragged his feet in his promise to restore Daniel’s deformed body, and now Daniel believes his master is responsible for Ilonka’s fate and turns on him.  But the monster throws him out the window, and carries the half-conscious Niemann through the woods, pursued by the angry villagers, the familiar torches at the ready.
In restoring the monster to life, Niemann apparently neglected to improve its mental capacities, for when the good doctor warns this giant, “Don’t go this way.  Quicksand!  Quicksand!,” the monster heeds not a word, and——
Not to worry.  Next year, 1945, the Frankenstein monster, Dracula and the Wolf Man will have a whole new beginning, another rebirth, in The House of Dracula, all creatures played by the same actors from House of Frankenstein.

A long upate! Thank you for waiting while I was on a small hiatus! I’m back now! Because I was so busy in May I feel behind on my reading list, so to make up for that I’ve upped my weekly goal to 5 books. So cheer me on that I can make that goal!! I will also be straying from my “this week I’m reading:” list a bit. I bought some thrift store books and had some great finds on Rightstufanime.com’s Pride sale at the beginning of the month, so I’m trying to get some of those read before I go back to my main focuses. I’m still including my main focus books though, because they’re what I want to be reading and actively working towards, even if progress is slow because I’m reading other wonderful things. Which I’m trying to get to as soon as possible.
That being said, I haven’t made much progress in Tokyo Ghoul: Re, Sherlock Holmes, or Gemina.
Language of Thorns is so much fun!!! It’s a collection of fairy tale-like stories from the different countries in the GrishaVerse. I’m only 2/6 stories through, but I’m enjoying it, and I’ve caught wind that there’s a Darkling cameo in it? I’m excited to find it if I heard right!! This is the newest installment in my book club with @books-take-flight and our final read with Leigh Bardugo works until the next one is released.
King of Scars was absolutely fantastic. I admit I had a hard time getting into the first half, but the second half reeled me in, in a way that no one but Leigh Bardugo could do. I was absolutely enthused to have more Nikolai and Nina. And having Zoya (a wonderfully developed, strong female character) take center stage was something I never knew I needed so badly. I loved it and I can’t wait until the next installment. I’ll be doing a mini highlight of this book when I get a chance in honor of PRIDE MONTH!
Go For It Nakamura was a thrift store find, that I was very wary towards... its cover- not so pretty. But it was very cheap, and I figured it would be a nice way to read a new LGBT series (especially one I’ve never even heard of before!) and would flip in a garage sale later on. HOWEVER! I won’t be doing that. I loved it. Yes, it’s very cheesy and not exactly a rot-your-teeth-sweet love story. But it’s a very nice slice of life. Each chapter is only a couple pages, and we get not only a romantic/coming of age story in the shorts, we also get a comedy. Because the chapters are so short, there’s not a lot of commitment needed on the readers end, but it’s definitely worth a read. I like having more relaxing, low-plot books to have on hand, because I feel like we could all use a story like this on our bad days. It’s a bit unfulfilling in the romance department, but we cheee for Nakamura anyway! I’ll also be doing a highlight of Go For it Nakamura in honor of Pride Month later on.
Otome Mania I got from the same thrift store as Nakamura, and had a similar attitude towards it going in. But I was pleasantly surprised by this duology too! I love how the story is about the Otome (dating sim) industry and reads like one! I only wish it were longer. We could have had a better developed plot, and better characters . It’s a duology manga, so all the conflicts are resolved unsatisfactorily quickly, and, like in an Otome game, our characters are introduced one at a time with that chapter being the chapter with their most screen time. While that works in a game, where you have the option of exploring that character again, in a manga it feels as though there’s too many characters to get attached to in such a short time. Regardless, I enjoyed it, and was surprised to see how few Goodreads users have read it (less than a 100! Only 55 for the second book!), i hadn’t heard of it before, but I still rarely see books on Goodreads have so few reads.
Bloom Into You! I’ve been wanting to read this book! I always get excited when I hear of a new LGBT book, and this one got a very popular anime as well! So I was sooooo ready to dive right in! Going in, I had high expectations, and it took a bit to get me invested. The characters are wonderful (they give me very Liz and the Blue Birds vibes), but not quite what I expected, which was my own fault. Once I got acquainted with who these two girls actually were, I started loving it. I can’t wait to read the next one, which I thought I ordered, but I was wrong so I have to wait. I’m cheering for their romance, but also their friendship as these two girls learn about themselves and each other in this sweet High School Romance. I will also give this book a highlight as soon as I can.
Yona of the Dawn! An absolute favorite series of mine that I can’t thank @books-take-flight more for. This book we get the Yellow Dragons past, and while I knew what was going to happen, Kusanagi writes the story so well and uniquely that it still broke my heart anyway. I’m waiting very eagerly for the next book and I hope this series continues and gets to live out the authors intent for as long as possible.
Claudine, another thrift store find. I almost didn’t buy this one, because I wasn’t a fan of the art ( I came around). However, we have a trans male protagonist and I couldn’t give that up. I went into it wary, because I had been under the impression that the series was about a trans FEMALE ( I was wrong) which meant that the title of this book was a dead name. So I was cautious going into this, and didn’t come around until I read some of the Goodreads reviews, and got to about the halfway point in the book where I became more interested in our hero’s story. The Goodreads reviews helped bring the zeitgeist into perspective for me. Particularly, that this story was written in the 70s. I don’t feel confident enough in my knowledge of the subject to use that to defend this work, but please look at Goodreads if you’re curious. Overall I was pleased by the story. The art felt very fitting after a while, and I was not prepared for how self contained and tragic this one shot is. I’ve felt dissatisfied with one shots before, but this book is so complete and planned that while I would LOVE to get more of Claude’s story, having what I do I can appreciate his story all the more. It reads almost like an old epic poem, where we go through the origin and then trials of Claude’s life. And it’s through his gender and identity that we see him learn how his true relationships differ from more shallow or lust-filled ones. I loved this book, even if it was heartbreaking. I’ll be doing a highlight on this book as well.

Tokyo Ghoul Volume 10 by Sui Ishida
Illuminae by Amie Kaufman
and The Complete Sherlock Holmes Volume 1 by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
And I finished:
The Ancient Magus’ Bride Volume 10 by Kore Yamazaki
I am at roughly the halfway point in Ruin and Rising as @books-take-flight continue our GrishaVerse readathon, and the connection between Alina and the Darkling is getting even bigger and more exciting.
I’ve been reading the Tokyo Ghoul manga for a while, slowly chipping away at it. I now have the rest of the books in the first series, so hopefully they’ll go a bit faster, but not too fast! I’ve been loving the differences between root A and the manga.
Illuminae has been a joy to read! I’m in the second half and I hope to finish it this week, which would mean a review next week! The rest of the book should go fast, and I can’t wait to be more familiar with it since I’m working up to reading the series finale : Obsidio for the first time
And once again, my back burner Sherlock Holmes has stayed on the back burner.
And I got to finish the newest Ancient Magus Bride manga! This new arc has lots of promise and exciting characters! I’m loving how Josef is responding to everything and I’m curious about Rían and Philomela.
I’m excited to finish Illuminae and get started on the next book in the series : Gemina and if my manga are delivered this week I can’t wait to read those too!! Hope you all have a great week!
