“You didn’t listen.” Chaeyoung said, as Dahyun took her place at the lunch room table across from Chaeyoung and Sana. Mina barely turned from whatever she was mixing at the counter.

Dahyun sighed. She’d already been chewed out by Jihyo and Jeongyeon for putting herself in harms way. She really didn’t need it from anyone else.

“I know.”

“Idiot.”

“Oh shut up.” Dahyun threw a piece of bread at her.

“Your sister was just really worried.” Sana added, softer.

Dahyun wanted to lash out, but she couldn’t, not at Sana. She was always so kind and patient, and Dahyun knew she was only worried for her, and for Jihyo. She took a deep breath, poking around the spicy pork and cabbage someone had left on the stove for lunch.

“What was I supposed to do then, Unnie? There was an innocent girl’s life at stake. Was I supposed to let her die?”

“No, of course not.” Sana whispered. “But, Dahyun- if you want to get back out into the field-”

“I don’t.”

“Well if you want to be a hero and go on your little rescue missions, then you need to train with Momo and Nayeon again. You’re not half the fighter you used to be, you’re nearly a year out of practice. I know you know that.” Chaeyoung said bluntly.

“And you’re off balance again. It’s subtle, but I can see you favoring your left side again. You stopped your strength training.” Sana said seriously. Her eyes showed nothing but pure concern. “If I can see it, so can a well-trained enemy.”

Dahyun glared. “Cool, anyone else want to take a stab? Mina?”

Mina turned around briefly before going back to heating up her lunch. “Your lab smells like fried circuitboards.”

Dahyun sighed and began to clean up, appetite lost. “Thank you, everyone, I will weigh your opinions and decide how many floors I need to clean with just a toothbrush to make up for my bad behavior-”

“Don’t get snarky with us, we’re just worried.” Chaeyoung said. “Look, I’m sorry. I just can’t watch you get hurt again.”

“It won’t be a problem. I’m not going back out anytime soon. Clearly I can’t handle it.” She said, standing up. She heard Sana call after her as she left the room, but she turned on her heel and didn’t look back until she wound through the hallways and stood in front of her lab door.

As soon as she stepped into it, she could breathe easier.

The lab wasn’t much compared to some of the stuff she’d seen, some of the labs she’d visited when she was growing up, the few days her parents brought her to the Agency. But it was what their dad had left them with, combined with what Jihyo could get for her, and she was grateful. Most of the machines were getting old but they worked just fine, and she knew more than enough about computers and circuits to give them upgrades when needed. There was a decent amount of storage, and she’d even made one of the closets a clean room of sorts, for forensic stuff. That was Mina’s forte, really, but Dahyun had done the research and installed the necessary equipment for her.

Her workbench in the center of the room called to her - built custom to her height and perfect for gadget repairs and tinkering, with a soldering and circuitry station that allowed her to make simple one-off devices catered to whatever mission they were on. The wall of servers to her left whirred on, and to her right the wall of monitors showed security camera footage from throughout the city. She took a seat at her desk and enlarged Momo’s dash cam footage, adjusting the camera angle and zoom to show Tzuyu’s apartment building in its entirety.

“Oh, hello, Dahyun.” Came Momo’s voice through the dash cam’s audio. She must have seen her adjust it. “You seeing this? Whole lotta nothing. Good sign, but I’m keeping my eyes peeled. Nayeon’s inside with the new girl. Said everything was clear.”

Dahyun nodded, though Momo couldn’t see her.

She decided to busy herself with upgrades for the wearable cams – nothing fancy, she’d just notice they’d flicker a little bit when they got too far from the signal amplifier. She’d just ordered new Bluetooth chips, a simple fix. She heard Momo shuffle from time to time but didn’t turn down the cam audio.

“Shit.”

Her eyes snapped up to the monitor. Her heart stopped. Two men at the door to Tzuyu’s building. Both of them were sharply dressed, in crisp suits and button-down shirts, and neither looked very friendly. They looked out of place in the dilapidated neigborhood she lived in.

“Nayeon,” she heard Momo say into her comms. “You’ve got company. Two men. Armed. Both wearing holsters under their jackets.”

“Fuck.” Nayeon answered.

Dahyun immediately pulled their pictures and ran them through the facial recognition software. Their faces matched to members from the gang that had owned Tzuyu’s coffee shop.

“Shit.” She agreed.

Dahyun grabbed a comms device off her workbench and switched it to the frequency she’d calibrated theirs to this morning.

“Guys, they’re the people she used to work for.”

“Fuck,” Nayeon said again. “They probably think she knew about the raid. I didn’t want to have to use the fire escape. Dahyun, can you see if they’re back there?”

Dahyun was already on it. She flipped through a bunch of private security cameras she’d tapped into until she found one that matched. “You’re good to take the fire escape, and move towards the blue dumpsters. Hurry, Nayeon - and Momo you can swing around and turn on Front street- turn down the back alley and you should be able to see them.”

“You got it.” The dash cam shook as the car rumbled to life. Momo skidded out of their parking spot and turned sharply to the left.

The last thing the camera caught was the men at the apartment door breaking it down.

What is more important?

If you embark on this crazy hobby what to do first? Which device is the most important?

Obviously it depends on from where you start. Some of those compact stereos sound really good. I bought one for my kids so they could have tunes and leave my system alone. You may have a receiver or even a boom box. Frankly the boom box should go. If you have a receiver it needs to be as powerful as you can get, or be ready to sell her on. You may have an integrated amp which is a receiver without a radio. But upgrading means buying two pieces to replace one.

The next step is deciding where you want to go. So imagine your ideal system. No brand names, just what components you want.

All good systems have separates. Amplifiers, preamplifiers, Speakers and of course a sound source. This means as you see deals, or want to upgrade you just swap out a piece. One at a time.

Sources are tricky if you are starting from zero. I know a guy who decided that streaming was the answer. A couple of subscriptions and on his way. He had a decent little receiver. He had some favorite speakers that were good and looked rather spacey. He had a computer with a Bluetooth dongle to feed the receiver. He got backed into a corner though.

He liked the sound until he heard better. He blew his speakers because his receiver was small and clipped. Very hard to impossible to fix those speakers. So he went shopping. He has several surround receivers now as they are pretty big and cheap and he wants to pick the best one. He also has several sets of good speakers, but really wants the spacey ones fixed. He is kinda stuck and not willing to go to separates.

I of course have CDs and LPs. Either can be a real rabbit hole. Heck even streaming is a rabbit hole. There is stupid expensive stuff for all that.

Put aside the source for the moment. What is the most important part to go high end with? I say it is the preamp. It has the most effect on the sound. Get one as good as you can. You will hear differences even through lower echelon amps and speakers. The preamp does the most to the signal. If you have LPs the phono stage is essential and should be in the main preamp. I dislike all those wall wart little side things.

What is next? Speakers for sure. There is crap. There is brilliant stuff. The parameters are almost endless. Do you have a house, or an apartment? How big is your room. Married? There are speakers that are better to look at that listen to. I mean really pretty stuff.

This is almost the hardest thing to choose. Old stuff almost certainly needs repair, can parts be found? I have a soft spot for Magnepans. They look like room dividers. So cool. Hard to place properly but so cool. Oh and they can sound very nice, and they can be repaired at the factory if necessary. BUT I wont buy them. Too hard to place definitely man cave stuff.

i advise you to avoid surround sound based sets. I prefer speakers that do not require subwoofers.

As noted many times I build mine. They are great. No really they are.

Ironically you will get ok sound from less than excellent speakers provided you have a good amplifier.

What is next? Amplifier is almost the easiest thing. There is so much choice. I advise solid state. Tube amps are expensive to get and to feed glass. For less money you get more power and less likely to blow your speakers. (ironic but true). Today there is a wonderful selection of excellent amplifiers for under $1000, and a good set under $400.

OK now to the source. There are not that many CD players for reasonable money as CDs are obsolete. Our local vintage audio shop has 4. CAM has lots but kinda crazy money for most as they are all high end. I advise you to get a dedicated CD player. I have a nice DVD recorder that plays CDs, but it sounds terrible. There are still new ones out there. Yamaha has one that is "reasonable."

LPs are my thing. You do not need a $2000 turntable. There are many under $500 on CAM and the local Craigslist that are fine. You can buy new for OK bucks. They are not bad. Please avoid USB units. A very good phono cartridge may be had for $200 bucks and excellent ones for $320. Properly set up they will get most stuff off the record. Oh and get a cork mat for it.

Several gigs in and I still haven't tweaked much. We play a mix of fairly hard edged R&B as a power trio and I get full and rounded tones from this little amp that sit well in the mix with more than enough balls for most of the venues we play. IMHO H&K's approach is perfect for the lunchbox format. They've concentrated on creating separate channel voicings that are fit for purpose and what they have chosen works great for me.

If you are used to using the tone controls on the amp to get the sound you want, this amp takes a different approach. As I see it the tone controls allow you to tweak the sound for the room and stage dynamics you're dealing with. If you don't like the basic channel voicings H&K have given you then this is probably not the amp for you, though I struggle to see what is not to like.

It also take the guess work out of things. I toyed with giving the amp four stars for features as it is a lunch box and lacks the versatility of it's grown up brothers, but given the sheer useability of the amp combined with power soak, red box DI and a effects loop I believe it rates 5 stars for the format.

Korg shall not be obliged to provide support services for any Third Party Software supplied (whether relating to operating methods, defects, or otherwise). Korg provides no warranty in relation to any Third Party Software supplied and all warranties whether express or implied as to the condition, quality, performance, merchantability or fitness for purpose of the Third Party Software or any part of the same are (in so far as may be permitted by law) hereby excluded. Korg furthermore disclaims all responsibilities for direct, derivative, collateral or consequential damages caused by the use of or the inability of using the Third Party Software (including but not limited to damage of data, lost commercial profit, interruption of work, lost commercial information), regardless of the degree of damages, and even if Korg was aware of the possibility of such damages in advance.

7. SUPPORT SERVICES Support services such as technical support or upgrade support for this product are provided according to the support service policies of Korg’s distributors applicable in each country. Korg reserves the right to amend any such policies from time to time in its absolute discretion.

8. GENERAL The license created by this agreement is personal to you and you may not assign or otherwise transfer your rights or obligations under this agreement without the prior written consent of Korg. If any part of this Agreement is found by a court of competent jurisdiction or other competent authority to be invalid, unlawful or unenforceable then such part shall be severed from the remainder of this Agreement which will continue to be valid and enforceable to the fullest extent permitted by law. This agreement is governed by and construed under the local law of the country where this product has been purchased. You hereby agree to the exclusive jurisdiction and venue of the aforementioned territory, without regards to conflicts of law provisions. Headings have been included for convenience only and shall not be used in construing any provision in this Agreement.
