LBRY, the company whose video-sharing technology and bespoke cryptocurrency once powered the extremist-friendly video platform Odysee, announced on Twitter this week that it would close its doors after a federal judge in New Hampshire fined the firm more than $111,000 for securities fraud. The announcement saw the value of its LBRY Credit (LBC) cryptocurrency – which was at the center of the Security and Exchange Commission’s (SEC’s) two-year prosecution of the company – sink to around 1/3000th of a cent by Thursday night. Experts say that Twitter’s more receptive attitude to extremists (just this week, far-right influencers bragged about the platform giving them five-figure payments) and LBRY’s failure to legally defend its cryptocurrency-fueled “free speech” business model all cast a shadow on the future of other so-called “alt-tech” sites. How is everyone feeling after the SEC v LBRY ruling?

Many of you are likely aware that the SEC won its case against LBRY today. For those that don't know about LBRY, LBRY, is/was a blockchain-based file-sharing and payment network that powers decentralized platforms, primarily social networks and video platforms. LBRY's creators also created Odysee, an open-source video-sharing website that uses the network, and that was split into a separate company on October 1, 2021. Odysee was basically a decentralized youtube that allowed people to tip content creators. The SEC sued LBRY last March and won its case today. The following information is from the SEC's press release on the case: "[t]he SEC seeks permanent injunctive relief, disgorgement plus prejudgment interest, and civil penalties. The SEC's complaint alleged that, from at least July 2016 to February 2021, LBRY, which provides a video sharing application, sold crypto asset securities called "LBRY Credits" to numerous investors, including investors based in the US. The complaint alleges that this was an offering and sale of securities under the federal securities laws, and that LBRY did not file a registration statement for the offering. The complaint further alleges that by failing to file a registration statement, LBRY denied prospective investors the information required for such an offering to the public." This case is relevant because it puts most of the cryptocurrency market/ industry in the SEC's crosshairs. It is also relevant because the SEC will most likely use the LBRY ruling in its case against Ripple Labs, and probably the Coinbase employees that were charged with insider trading too. While it should be noted that LBRY relied on the fair notice defense, and Ripple Labs is arguing that XRP fails the Howey test, this really wasn't great news to hear. One of the SEC's main arguments was that LBRY pre-mined its tokens, and kept a portion of those tokens for itself, and also that the LBC token did not have a use case when it was first created. How do you think centralized exchange tokens like BNB , CRO, FTT, Gemini dollar and others will be affected by this ruling? What about Tether? I think that each coin/its founders will have to argue that their token fails the Howey test, or that fair notice was not given. I don't think that the LBRY ruling will act as a blanket ban on the cryptos we know and love. I do think that the cryptocurrency industry will continue to feel uneasy while current and additional SEC cases are litigated. I think it is annoying that the SEC can say "you didn't give prosepctive investors information required for such an offering" when no one knows shit about fuck. Being more serious, it's annoying that while the SEC is arguing securities laws were broken, it is ultimately the hodlers of the tokens that are harmed by the decrease in price that inevitably results from a crypto being deemed a security. It's my opinion that bitcoin is probably the most safe (as everyone has been saying) from the SEC. For the short-mid term, that's what I will be focusing my DCA on. Why Odysee?

After the success of YouTube, Blogger and other systems of the so-called “big techs”, because of political hegemony and certain actions aimed at censoring anyone who broke such hegemony or minimally complained about certain entities or companies that generated income for these big techs, the need arose to create a decentralized and unobjectionable network to do so. Of course, this is not to say that these systems would simply overthrow the big tech systems, but they serve as competition and break the complete hegemony of these systems.

Of course, there were alternatives before, like Rumble, but all these sites had a serious problem: centralization. And that’s exactly the kind of problem that Odysee solves.

Overview

Odysee runs on top of the LBRY protocol, which mixes the Torrent protocol with the Bitcoin transaction system. This brings certain advantages, such as file storage distribution, where, even if you haven’t finished downloading the file, you are already distributing it among other users, and, added to the Bitcoin node system, it makes anyone with a fullnode will be able to know the exact torrent address of that particular file. Cryptoactives

As LBRY’s system was strongly inspired by Bitcoin, it’s only fair to talk about its cryptocurrency system. The LBRY protocol has its own cryptocurrency that serves, among other things, to post your media on the platform: the LBC. Your Odysee account works like a cryptocurrency wallet, where you can put and withdraw your LBC, as well as US dollars, which can be used to send and receive donations (and even advertisements in the future).

Among other things, you can quickly and accurately see where your LBC left and went to records, and even export this data for viewing in other programs such as Microsoft Excel or Libreoffice Calc.

Freedom of expression

The foundations of the LBRY protocol are based on values ​​of freedom of expression. This means that there is no big tech behind it saying what should and what should not be shown to the user. Neither Odysee nor LBRY will simply cut your reach let alone put a stamp with “partially fake news” below your posts, videos, music or files.

Privacy

You don’t need to have a big tech email account or hand over all your preference data and other personal stuff to a central entity just so you can watch your videos whenever and wherever you want. Odysee and LBRY themselves are much less intrusive on the privacy issue than YouTube and its alternatives.

Of course, you’ll end up giving in certain data, including to activate the advertising system, but that doesn’t mean that you’ll have to show an unknown corporatist everything you have and do.

Remuneration
