Untitled Piano Composition
One of the most effective ways to create music is to let go of trying to control the outcome and allow your hands, feet, or fingers to guide you.
Here is an example of that.
If you try this technique out, please let me know how you find it!

Why How to Train Your Dragon’s music score is so good
"The term "fantasy" can mean different things to different people. It can range from knights in shining armor rescuing damsels in distress to children learning magic at a school to heroes gallivanting across space. (Finnegan) Unlike other fantasy films like Harry Potter, How to Train Your Dragon focuses on realism. Harry Potter focuses on world-building and the struggle of good versus evil.
In contrast, How to Train Your Dragon focuses on a family conflict between  Hiccup and his father over their view on dragons.
Both fantasy worlds have their own signature elements.
In addition, both are presented in both books and movies. In translating fantasy novels to films, filmmakers must use music,  cinematography, and animation tricks to get the audience to feel what Hiccup and Harry feel in their fantasy worlds.
Music is often overlooked when talking about films. However, music is constantly helping audiences follow along with the story emotionally. Each character has their own theme music; in How to Train Your Dragon, Hiccup and Toothless themes are meant to be heard and felt together. The friends' themes complete each other.

The unified theme is played triumphantly as Hiccup flies with Toothless untethered for the first time. Hiccup and Toothless' themes are played on top of one another as Hiccup releases Toothless from his trap and also in the track called Forbidden Friendship. which plays as Hiccup learns more about Toothless in the woods. The song titled Test drive plays as Hiccup and Toothless solo for the first time. "When flying, they must almost become one. In a  do or die exercise that forces both of them to let go and trust each other completely, no cheat cheats, and the music also has to do this" (Phoebe-Kate). The themes can be played in major or minor to induce different emotions. Hiccup and Toothless' themes embody friendship as Toothless' theme is not completed until the test drive.
"As Phoebe-Kate says, Hiccup's theme is played 31 times in the movie. This is a great demonstration of the brilliance of theme writing in movie scores. And we've seen it in so many scores in the past. For  decades this is how composers have created themes that make you  subconsciously remember parts of movies." (Charles Cornell) Memorable films are well directed and well scored. Those moments of tension in the final battle and the reveal of Hiccup's prosthetic leg are supported by music. That's why they are emotional and memorable.
Tumblr media
The co-directors Sanders and DeBlois strived to make the film as "live-action" as possible.
This included having actors record together. This captured real connections and grounded the fantasy film in reality. When Hiccup became an amputee, the directors knew it wasn't realistic for there to be no long-lasting consequences. Their disabilities are not presented simply as challenges. Instead, both adapt and grow closer from their experience. Maturing involves loss and change. It forces people to let go of innocent naivete. Hiccup grapples with being the chief of Berk and letting go of Toothless, and the innocence of forbidden friendship. After his father dies, he has to find his place among his people again. Hiccup's fantasy world has genuine moments of loss and change. This realism allows these animated "children's movies" to resonate with their audiences. Childhood doesn't last forever.

~Compañero, no estás solitario.
somos un bosque de hombres, somos vários.
Vayamos hombro con hombro, codo con codo
Porque si cae uno, caemos todos.

Music
So, one of the difficulties of my game development (I spent the last bit attempting to fix a pressing bug with root motion, I have a workaround at the moment...) is that, while I play music, I don’t really compose it.
Even so, I have made a few over the years for other projects, and I got a decent way through one I was liking for a title screen here maybe (sort of a Dwarven war song) and then I realized...  Wait.  This is the bassline to Under Pressure.  I mean, it’s on timpani instead of a bass guitar, and it’s about as distinct as Ice Ice Baby, but like...  I can’t do that...
Unfortunately, it has been stuck in my head for a while now, so that cuts out more composing attempts for a bit.

Today, I released my latest EP, “Classical Cinema.” It consists of three tracks, all with a direct cinematic influence attached to them. The first is “Ahsoka’s Theme,” inspired by the character of Ahsoka Tano from “Star Wars: Clone Wars.” The second is “Lost Souls, Guided by Hope,” inspired by the Andrei Tarkovsky film, “Stalker.” Finally, we have “Dawn of Man,” which is an expansion of a piece I wrote for my “2001: A Space Odyssey” “soundtrack,” “Beyond the Infinite: A Musical Odyssey.” It is now available at Bandcamp at https://brianskutle.bandcamp.com/album/classical-cinema #composerslife #composer #musicallife #composingmusic #starwars #starwarsclonewars #ahsokatano #stalkerfilm #andreitarkovsky #2001aspaceodyssey #stanleykubrick https://www.instagram.com/p/CAXj6q9p6g1/?igshid=qk6yu6fce0ax

I want to expand on the capitalist hellscape bit for a minute.
I was just discussing with my housemate, a painter, how
1) capitalism has has made it almost impossible for artists to thrive because of its intense demands (eg people like us with trauma and disabilities aren't able to get the necessary support to thrive in capitalism and have the energy to practice their art at the end of the day - that extends to anyone struggling, frankly. You don't need disabilities or trauma to struggle in this environment)
2) our toxic society's extremely thin margins of what is acceptable or "in" is solely focused on what can get the most likes, views, or money and
3) advancing tech making certain art forms more accessible to a wider range of people. This isn't a bad thing! But it has saturated the market. I got out of college at this WEIRD period in time for music composers. We learned the skills to compose but we weren't exposed to the new tech that was emerging. By the time you've "recovered" from a stint of college you realize that there are so many people able to pump out low quality work that has good production quality, giving it the upper hand in some markets. AND services like music libraries that allow people to buy music without paying the composer a living wage (hint: a fully orchestrated piece can traditionally sell for $500 per minute back in the day. It also robs composers of their ability to negotiate terms and royalties). The advancing tech is great but it also drowned out people who really) devoted their energy into learning the craft. My skills as an orchestrater are gathering mothballs.
I do think the accessible tech is awesome. The more people having access to create regardless of their background and ability to get formal training the better. Art is vital to society. But in a toxic, capitalist society that doesn't value art or artists has sort of put us in this quagmire of content.
I know there's been a lot of talk lately about anti-intellectualism and the lack of movies that have souls etc but please don't forget that we also live in the first time in history where just about anyone can create and publish art online. Watch movies posted to directly to YouTube with a thousand views. Read self-published books. Listen to SoundCloud artists. There's a whole world of low budget content out there made solely for the love of art and even if every industry is a capitalist hellscape there will still be people creating art and how lucky are we that we have access to it
