What Can We Do About Spotify’s New Payment Policy?
Spotify’s recent announcement has made many small artists mad. (See this post where I’m mad about it for more information as to why or shoot me a message if you have specific questions!)
Here are the things to do in case you don’t want to read my long explanations:
1.) Reach out to your favorite small and large creators.
2.) Look into other streaming platforms.
3.) Ask Companies for Statements and Send Feedback.
4.) Contact News Organizations
5.) Reblog and Share Your Experiences Online
I’ve provided more detail on each step under the cut. Feel free to add to this list, too!
1.) Reach out to your favorite small and large creators!
Not a lot of people are talking about this, one way to fix that is to bring it up, especially to those who have platforms. Podcasters, YouTubers, and especially musical artists. Large artists on Spotify have the clout to make a difference, but getting influencers to spread the word will be helpful as Spotify desperately wants to control how this change is perceived. (They literally framed their policy as giving millions to “new and emerging artists”, though if you read the policy you’ll see that’s not the case.)
Also send your favorite small artist a kind message about their music as many are feeling invalidated by this decision.
If you’re an artist: Politely ask artists you look up to for advice or opinions, express your distress if appropriate.
If you’re a fan: Politely express your concerns to larger artists and ask if they have an opinion. Also look for ways to help support small creators you enjoy. Not everyone can afford merch or to buy a song outright, but even a message can help keep us motivated.
2.) Look into other streaming platforms. Both artists and consumers:
It’s no secret that streaming platforms pay artists almost nothing per stream, but artists are entitled to their money no matter how little. There are plenty of other streaming sites so if you currently pay to use Spotify, now may be a good time to consider other options before the policy goes into effect in 2024.
Obviously Apple Music, Amazon Music, and Youtube Music are all options if you’re looking to pay for a new service that’s popular and has a similar catalog/features to Spotify. However Youtube videos on an artists official channel will also help support and there are plenty of other options like Tidal or Sound Cloud.
Try to see how these companies compare in price and artist payout to make a decision that best fits you.
Also! Streaming Options I Just Learned About:
Resonate is a site that offers a “Pay2Own” model. Essentially, you only pay when you listen, doubling the cost each time, and once you’ve listened to a song enough to have paid about $1.40 it’s yours forever and you don’t have to pay more. And most of that money goes straight to the artist as Resonate is a CoOp.
SonStream is more direct and has you paying about $0.03 per song. Straightforward. If you don’t listen, you don’t pay. Meaning you can adjust how much you spend if needed each month rather than paying a regular subscription. They just put out Android and iOS apps and it’s free to use, meaning you only pay for what/ how much you listen to. If you want to more directly support an artist, see if they’re on there.
For consumers and fans: There are a lot of options for gaining access to music while still supporting artists, go forth and discover what's right for you!
For artists: See what sites will be best for you, if your distributor doesn't distribute to a site you think is good for you, see if you can upload it yourself.
3.) Ask companies for statements and send in your feedback.
Now is an excellent time to attempt to contact Spotify, Distributors, Labels, and other involved companies for statements about this issue. The more they have to talk about it, the bigger deal it will be. Contact their competitors, ask for their statements. Ideally, they’ll be forced to release public statements and add to the spread of news.
Additionally if their shareholders get upset, Spotify will sweat even more. If you’re a shareholder or know one, please open up the conversation.
Now is also an excellent time to tell Spotify that you don’t like this choice as a consumer, then come back in a week and do it again. Keep the pressure on. You give them money to access music while supporting artists. If the artists you choose to listen to aren’t compensated, why give them your money?
Contact other services as well. If you’re a customer for another service, emphasize to them how you dislike Spotify’s decision and want to ensure they keep paying their artists.
If you are an artist: Contact your distributor or label. Tell them your concerns and ask how they are going to help you.
If you are a consumer: Figure out how to give feedback and send it. Try multiple avenues. Always be polite, but firm.
4.) Contact News Organizations
Again, Spotify really wants to control the narrative. We should not let them. Send a tip to your local newspapers or news stations. Contact major news stations. Tweet at them.
If you’re a consumer/ fan: Contact stations and politely ask if they have any intentions to cover this story. Explain how you’re disappointed that other stations aren’t covering it. If someone in your local area has covered it, offer praise (or if it was covered poorly, critique) and ask if they plan to follow up. Point to any public statements from artists or companies.
If you’re an artist: If you are comfortable, try reaching out as above and offer to interview with them (especially if it’s for a local story). It’s good for your business as you can get in front of people, and show how this is affecting artists in your community. If you’re not comfortable with that, you could also release a public statement on social media and point the news in that direction as a source.
5.) Reblog and Share Your Experiences Online
I’ve seen a lot of people say that only fake artists (AI and bots) will be affected by this. If you are a small creator and are comfortable/ safe doing so, share how this policy will affect you. It will help us be seen and help fight that argument that no "real" musicians are being hurt.
And if you’re comfortable, reblog this post or talk about these changes on your socials. Share Spotify’s Statement and point out the flaws in their argument.
Not everyone comes to Tumblr for this sort of thing, I totally get that. Not everyone wants to be faced with cold reality on their fun app and you are not obligated to engage in cold reality on Tumblr. That’s not what many use Tumblr for, but I find it strange that something like this isn’t being talked about more on this platform. Kind of seems like something Tumblr users would care about, so let’s spread the word and talk about it.
And that’s what I have. Look, some of the things in their update are good. Trying to stop AI shenanigans and people gaming the system is a good thing. However, the 1000 streams per track policy will hurt Spotify’s smallest creators far more than those putting in minimal effort.
Thank you for your time and good luck to my fellow small musicians.

i think my favourite thing about aom is that you can tell everyone (except maybe alice) fucking hates each other but they're also trying to be so calm and polite about it. the breakfast scene where orpheus infodumps about mary is the best example of it. his pointed comments so clearly digging into sore spots for both melly and frederick, melly's seething tone of voice when orpheus addresses her about loyalty before immediately throwing the heat onto frederick, frederick just setting down his drink, dismissing the whole thing, and then immediately fucking off but not without one last pointed glance at orpheus, it's so good. like i am just waiting for these people to rip each other apart. alice is on her own quest and getting dragged into these people's beef by virtue of just existing near them and being way too nosy for her own good, it's the fucking best

Honestly, the craziest part of accessibility is that there aren't many abled people (and disabled people who aren't disabled in Every Way Possible) who wouldn't benefit from any of the accessibility options out there
ALT text has made it so much better to navigate image-based pages! I'm not visually-impared, but tumblr is terrible at loading images, and I'm not always connected to WiFi. People who add ALT text make it easy to satiate my curiosity when images don't load! This, coupled with actually learning how blind and visually-impared people navigate the online world, has inspired me to do my best to emulate the things I find helpful, even if the way it helps me is very different than theirs. Having a sense of scale in how it helps me versus how it actually makes the internet usable to the blind and visually-impared is something I do try to keep in mind.
Navigating a world with accessible options is primarily going to help the disabled, and it's imperative to keep this in mind. I do think, though, that illustrating just how much accessibility impacts even abled people's lives can help inspire people to think, "wow, I can't imagine a world without [accessibility option] and I don't need it, but it makes life so much easier." The more I interact with accessibility options I don't need, I still find it so helpful. I can't even imagine how amazing it is when you do need that accessibility and it's actually provided to you.
I don't think that abled people should only be in it for themselves. Again, accessibility should put disabled needs first and foremost. But I can't help but wonder how many people you can get to understand this by first saying how it impacts them, too.

i think edward little would be great at emails actually. i think he'd love having to opportunity to think abt what he needs to say and formulate it well and concisely. i think he'd write perfectly ok emails, to the point but polite enough not to be blunt. in normal circumstances he'd receive normal emails and write normal replies and it would be fine. the problem in terror is that he keeps getting increasingly upsetting emails from his boss and they're all no-reply

persona 3 and twewy spoilers but
i just need to ramble about how the hypothetical bad ending of twewy (neku shoots josh) is basically what happens to ryoji and makoto at the end of the year. neku and makoto both discover that the weird guys hanging around them are actually supposed to be in some way battling against them. and because fate is cruel, they have to choose whether to kill them or spare them for the sake of having brighter lives. joshua tells neku that he’s going to “erase shibuya” while ryoji says killing him will make makoto and his friends forget about the coming fall to save some stress. (interestingly enough these motives range from judgement to guilt)
joshua and ryoji are related to destruction in some way. joshua is trying to see if shibuya really isn’t worth erasing and ryoji is literally death/thanatos and nyx’s messenger. despite knowing this, neku and makoto still struggle to choose because to them, the care and love they have for their friends hasn’t gone. alongside that, their motives to keeping them alive is also because of the fear of losing the bonds they’ve built together than simply just saving shibuya or protecting your peace from the fall of the earth.
there are differences between joshneku and ryomina, but the similarities are still there. i love joshneku and shuake comparisons, but I find that ryomina is also very fitting.
okay what I’m saying is this dynamic makes me ill

Sseing my people praise the tortured poets department like its the best thing to ever exist is painful.
Lyrically? It’s trying to be poetic in the way that a writer like jane eyre would be, but removing the substance and replacing it with purely the aesthetic
Compositionally?? Boring asf
Then throwing shade at joe for having mental health issues is insane

Alright yall like don't wish on the Ghoul boys' downfall now.
We shouldn't hate on the creators just cause they wanna make more money- all us are doing the same thing, WE LIVE IN A CAPATALISTIC SOCIETY.
Its not the "trying to make more money" that should be the problem here, it should be about how they went abt it.

I don't know why my dash kept showing me "datv critical" posts but I got sick of reading it and seeing people fail to actually pay attention to the game they're trying so hard to deconstruct and say is irredeemable shit that I finally just blocked the damn tag. My sanity will thank me later for it.

A HSR AU idea
Caelus and Stelle are a demon and human pair of siblings, both are very unique in their own way. Stelle is a demon that doesn't need to eat humans to survive and Caelus is a human that eats demons to gain their powers. The two have decided to join the Trailblazers, a group of stand alone demon investigators and sometimes hunters when things get serious.
March 7th: Another member of the Trailblazers that is looking for a demon who has all her memories, or so she thinks.
Dan Heng: A demon hiding as a human and choosing to make his living as one, but so far he still needs to drink blood every now and then. He doesn't remember much from his past life but he gets glimpses every now and then.
Himeko: A human investigator who looks around for more demons regarding their origin. She didn't have teaching in mind when she came to this field of study but so far her four students have learned many things from her.
Welt Yang: One of the so-called ‘Reformist demons’ who, unlike normal demons, completely rejects eating any kind of human tissue and blood. So far he has survived by eating animal flesh that has a lot of proteins related to that of human flesh.
Pom-Pom: Vengeful spirits come in many forms, and one of them is Pom-Pom. Although the only thing Pom-Pom seems vengeful about is cleaning everyone's mess after a fight.
#honkai star rail#The prompt is in the demon slayer universe#Or kny#Since the Trailblazers don't exactly have a god or bad side to follow in game I kinda just let them be researchers or investigators#Instead of outright slaying demons#In this case the Xianzhou. Belobog. And the Galaxy (or just ) Rangers are the known factions to deal with the demons#Whereas there IPC. Genius society. And the Stellarons are the factions on the side of the demons.#Though in many ways they vary.#Genius Society members only want the immortality for their research and don't care much about having to eat human flesh#IPC wants a world of all humans having perfect immortality and becoming demons#The Stellarons just want to kill humans#Belobog is composed of humans who want all demons to go extinct due to the damage they have caused#The Xianzhou is composed of reformed demons and humans. Both choosing to coexist in peace with heavy consequences when a human is harmed.#The galaxy rangers are all humans with more extraordinary abilities and personal beefs with demons than the rest.#The fsctions here aren't exactly divided between good or bad like in kny where it was more obvious.#Both have their own contributions and problems. Instead the line would be whenever or not humans are better or demons are better.#And their stances about that vary from pure Absolute yes or no to they are equals to in some extent they are better or worse to#It's hard to say.#The other groups I've not mentioned because I've yet to fully read on them but here are some headcanons#—Argenti is the first knight of beauty that's demon#—Ratio is the first human of the intelligentsia guild#—Reca and Black Swam are more on the spirit side.#—Acheron is a newly turned demon that still thinks they are human#—The stellar hunters are dead set on killing every demon more so than belobog#—The family cares deeply about those who have been transformed into demons and through.... ways... tries to make them go back to being huma#—The fools are vampire who are too tired of political shat. They just enjoy being whatever.

People are getting really mad at leftists for the amount of young racist white guys like it’s their fault fascism has become so popular. It wasn’t even Gen Z pushing the whole we’re gonna save the world’ shit it was everyone else shifting the onus onto the new generation and then the branding stuck.
