May or may not have forgotten what I posted here myself months ago so the last post had a few repeats. oops.
Well I know for sure this one won’t because I stopped posting when I started the second semester, which is what this post is about. So the drawing above is the start of working with more complex shapes, using the ones we learned from last semester. This is also where things got interesting, since I could see the potential for architectural drawings.

There are a lot, and I mean A LOT of drawings like these in my sketchbook, I’m gonna show you only the ones I find interesting.
After that we went back a bit for cast shadows, which I have decided are my new mortal enemy in art. A long time ago it was rendering hair, but that’s nothing compared to this.

The amount of calculations you need to do for this and the different formulas for each shape make me wanna rip my hair off. And that’s before getting into more complex shapes.

They're not 100% correct but my teacher said the majority of people won’t notice anything wrong so I shouldn’t worry about it. I won’t until I need it for a personal project, then I’ll get very annoyed again.
After that nightmare I got rewarded with finally using colors to render for the first time!!! I love rendering with colors so I was very excited haha

The copper (right middle sphere) is my absolute favorite, and my teacher really liked it as well.
We also had a small lecture on arrows and ribbons/fabric and we got to render them with colors as well.

For all the colored drawings I used a combination of alcohol markers and colored pencils. The markers melted and blended the pencils and I could use this to mix colors I didn't have. For example, I didn’t have a red marker at all.
After that we had a fun exercise where we needed to either study an object or design our own. The purpose was to use the previous lessons about shapes in perspective, and the rendering of different materials. I went with a gun design, but not just any gun-this one is technically 3 guns, a pistol and an SMG that you can connect and form an assault rifle. So I designed each gun separately (somehow I managed to turn this exercise to designing 3 objects instead of one, leave it to me to make it harder on myself lmao), and thought about how they connect, making sure the chambers kinda align and stuff like that.
I don’t wanna brag but I got the highest grade in the class for this assignment. Mostly because I’m the only one that actually rendered the different materials (or tried to), but also because my teacher liked the idea and thought it was interesting, and something people would actually buy if it was real.

It’s not the best but I literally didn’t have a grey marker so I was pretty limited. I chose a stained-glass theme for some reason, I didn’t want to make it a normal looking gun. The scan made it a bit more contrast-y than it is irl.
After a huge break we came back and had one lesson of silhouettes, something I kinda knew but never went out and made studies of. The challenging part of this was the time limit, at the start we had a minute, but it went down to 30 seconds. We were allowed to go overtime but it wasn't considered good.

On the same lesson, we also had life drawing, using each other as models. We had to get the pose down in one minute, and then take that as a reference for a more detailed drawing. I chose to completely change the context at that point lol

The next lesson was about isometric perspective. I don’t think I’ve actually talked about this here, but I got scammed by a guy who asked me to make him a city island in isometric perspective, then when it came time to pay, he “took a vacation” for two weeks. Came back to tell me he’s definitely gonna pay me. Proceeded to disappear. Anyways I haven’t done isometric from that moment until this lesson, where we were given a prompt word and had to draw an environment following it. I used only colored pencils for this one because I forgot to bring my markers, but it was a nice restriction to only use 12 colors and try to combine them to make the rest. I really enjoyed this one since I got the freedom to make something cool.

(the prompts are top-to-bottom forest, COVID-19, underwater and space) my teacher walked up to my desk to see what I’m doing while I worked on the space one, and he said “you are crazy” every time he passed by. He showed everyone’s work around, and a lot of people liked mine :) The space one is based on a black hole btw, but if it was an eldritch horror.
The last lesson was a time for the teacher to review everyone’s work one by one, so most of the time we were waiting for our turn. He put up a pic of an old camera if any of us wanted to draw it, but I used it as a reference for a building because it reminded me of art deco architecture. After finishing that, I had an idea for a shrine kind of place, inspired by a spot I built for a friend’s minecraft server that we didn’t end up using. And I topped it off with Lykena and Eivrun sketches (that for Eivrun might turn into a full painting when it’s her turn)

The entire year my teacher was occasionally asking me if I’m not getting bored, because we were going through a lot of basics I was obviously proficient at already, but I always found something new to learn, no matter how small, even on topics I practiced a lot before. So I’d say this workshop was very useful for me. And besides, it’s always good to get critiques from a professional, and from people who are interested in art.

Week 3 Studio Tutorial – Section and Auxiliary Views
This week was an introduction to both Section and Auxiliary Views, as well as further practice for orthogonal technical drawings. While I have some experience in section views from last terms BENV1010 assignment, auxiliary views was a concept I was completely unfamiliar with. Initially it took me some time to wrap my head around how these projections were formed, but eventually I figured out Auxiliary Views conceptually through revising the material on moodle.
Week 3 Task: Orthogonal, Sectional and Auxiliary Views of a Tapered Block.
This week we were tasked with creating a technical drawing of a tapered block using novel views. This block was presented in an isometric view with the dimensions present.
Similarly to last Week 2, I started the technical drawing with a general block out. This was done by observing the overall dimensions of each view of the Tapered Block, and representing each view with a rectangle. Due to the auxiliary projection, the spacing between the different views were relatively tight.

Below is the final illustration of the Tapered Block. I rectified some of the mistakes made in week 2's technical drawing, such as writing everything capitalized and with a more consistent font. Additionally, I had a more comprehensive use of dimensioning in this week's Illustration.

Overall, I am happy with my technical drawings of the week. Some improvements could be made to the drawing however. The inconsistencies of the arrows is still prevalent in this week's work. Additionally, the placement of the title block breaks conventions as they are typically placed in the bottom right hand side of the illustration.

I’m not bored of RPGs

Almost all isometric computer roleplaying games are broken into islands. There is a campaign map operating like a vast sea, and within that sea one visits small places with a clearly marked border. Instanced dungeons where a poor laptop can muster a fireworks display for your heroes.
How refreshing that Pillars 2 leans into that. Islands within islands. Thematically a voyage across the sea, replete with sea shanties. I applaud the structure of this game. It is a delight to discover remote islands that hold illustrated text adventures in addition to the meat and potatoes combat.
And the combat really is meat and potatoes. You get to choose two professions, allowing really dumb combinations like my paladin who had to choose between summoning bats or tanking the front line. The benefit of all this is that you can find ways to entertain yourself if you get bored of all the murdering. I avoided the ship to ship combat as it is a weird mini game that I don’t like. You can largely do without it, and if you make enough allies during the main quest you can get to the final battle free of cannon balls or uninspiring melee.
The main story suffers from trying to have a connection to the first game. I really would have preferred to tackle this adventure without that baggage. When I go off the beaten track the game is a lot of fun. Fortunately the open sea has little in the way of tracks. It is a game weighed down by hubris and experiment but still manages to tread water in a sea of similar titles.

This is a mostly classic roguelike. I say mostly because it has some very linear boss fights you’re forced to repeat, and it offsets the lack of a hunger clock by just dumping more monsters into a level. By “dump” I mean they’re just new things there without any logic or tactical threat.
However, Tangledeep has a lot of nonsense you can get up to: You can summon plant monsters. Multiclass into a soul drinking summoner. Plant trees. Keep pets. Visit bonus dungeons. Make food (mostly curry). There’s other stuff too, I just kinda lost track.
I got invested enough to come up with a specific build. One that would summon lots of monsters and teleport around the map with a combination of skills I’d pick up from two of the fighting professions. Eventually I died and I couldn’t imagine playing a different style of character. The new classes I was unlocking weren’t offering new pets or movement skills so I haven’t played since.
I enjoyed my time with Tangledeep a lot. Mining the powers from all the classes was a fun project to play out during the delve. Had I survived I’m sure I would have engaged with all the other features the game has. I want to say you should play the game without permadeath, because the structure doesn’t reward it. I think one should play their first game with permadeath on to get to grips with using skills, then turn it on to start a new game. Picking classes in the right order and taking only the skills you need. The game kind of expects you to do this by offering a tougher dungeon on future play-throughs. Some solid fun to be had here when you figure out what settings you should turn on and off. The developer has been kind enough to offer a lot of them.
Devil May Cry 5

Okay, it’s not an RPG but it’s really good. A pure expression of joy in videogame form. It dares me into thinking it’s gone too stupid, but then yes, yes I really do need to cut down this boss with two motorcycles, it’s the best tactical option.
I’m too old and slow for these sort of games and yet DMC5 encouraged me instead of frustrating me. From fans of the series I’ve heard it does its forebears credit. One can only hope that its creators have more games like this to share in the future.
Final Fantasy X

I’ve stopped at the Blitzball tutorial, I do not want to play this mini game. I don’t like any of the characters in this game either. It took The Witcher 3 about eight hours to win me over, which is kind of acceptable in a huge RPG. But I’m not even meeting NPCs that I like.
I’ll have to come back to this one.

Constraints do interesting things to games. In FF12 we have what wants to be an open world MMO type of game and it thinks it’s running on a Playstation 2. So the whole world is broken into islands.
Sounds like an isometric CRPG to me. It even leans into that constraint, creating strange geometries to navigate with a pace to encounters that you don’t really see in modern sandbox games. In an open world there must be empty spaces. To create immersion and to allow monsters to chase you for a reasonable distance before giving up. You need boring bits. FF12 removes those boring bits, creating a world that feels like a traditional dungeon on a massive scale.
Then it puts those boring bits right back in. All the way in.
FF12 is a real-time game. You assign commands and your heroes act them out. You can also set your heroes on auto pilot. The game lets you buy more specific commands from shops, allowing you to create an undying death machine out of your party. This starts out really fun. You unlock abilities on your character’s skill-tree-board-thing and continue to tinker with the death ball. But even though you’ve unlocked an ability, you have to first find it in the dungeon world. And some of the ways you find them are bullshit. Be prepared to walk in and out of an area to dice roll a boss fight into appearing (not a bug - that’s what you have to do). Be prepared to navigate a dungeon that has a 42 minute explanation on youtube (and it’s been edited). Be prepared to find Dispelga on route to a boss and only find Dispel after you looked it up on a wiki (it’s in the corner of a really easy dungeon that I already cleared). Unlocking abilities this way sets expectations. I know I’m missing something and I’ve paid to unlock it - I’m committed. As I got further into the game’s list of status effects and party buffs my frustration grew.
The story has a cast of amiable characters struggling against occupation by the Empire. It’s alright. I remember all their names but couldn’t honestly tell you how I got to where I am or what started it. In a game which is largely about exploration it works pretty well as a backdrop.
It’s a very unique game. A hybrid of MMO and isometric RPG made from the JRPG mindset. The modern ports of the game feature fast-forward buttons that apologise for the self-indulgences taken in its original form. It is a decent thirty hours of fun and a further ten hours of not much fun. I certainly recommend it to roleplaying game enthusiasts, but with caveats for completionists.

I experienced Pokemon Red on my then-desktop-PC whilst listening to the album Gran Turismo by The Cardigans. I couldn’t stand the high pitched beeps of the menu so I preferred to listen to the latest CD I had. The song Explode is burned into my mind next to stamping on a monster’s head and stuffing it into a ball. It’s not something you need to know, but I thought I’d tell you about it.
The conceit of why you are stuffing classic monsters from Final Fantasy games into balls prisms does not need explaining. Nor does one need to know why the two main characters help form two stacks of three creatures. Who cares why these stacks combine the powers of those within to create a hybrid JRPG avatar.
World of Final Fantasy cares. Oh boy does it care. There’s not a single button on my gamepad this isn’t getting away without two minutes of banter between the characters to explain it. Cutscene after cutscene rolls by. They often come in pairs so I pause and skip ahead just in case. Even after you complete a cutscene the characters lock out the controls and have a jolly good chat about what they’ve just seen. In its defence it lets you skip being waterboarded with the story and run the game at what feels like 1.5x speed. But there’s still a lot of busy work when it comes to skipping cutscenes. There’s loads of them.
I really like the combat. That is, I really like it when I have a monster that does the right colour damage for capturing a new monster. It’s a refreshing take on Pokemon that is utterly wasted on the Final Fantasy franchise, but I guess it needed the brand for this weird game to even exist. If you like the combat you found in Pokemon and want something with more nuance and challenge then you should pick it up and skip those cutscenes. If you need some story to wash it down with and don’t like a shockingly linear campaign map, then perhaps put it off for a while.
7DBL (7 Day Broughlike) Challenge

I’ve often been accused of making a Broughlike. To make a game that reminds you of Michael Brough’s work: A small grid with a turn based avatar that can cast spells. I’ve often refuted this because I tend to avoid having spells in my games. There’s just never a nice way to do the UI. Us iPad owners are fine, phone owners less so, desktop users get lots of keys to press, and hooray for gamepads if they aren’t awful for any type of menu.
Those more patient than I have stepped up to the challenge. Echoing the 7 Day Roguelike Challenge (7DRL, of which I am a yearly participant) developers across the globe attempted to make a small grid with a turn based avatar that cast spells. In 7 days. They also scheduled this challenge right before the gaming event called E3. Much like the 7DRL always gets scheduled before the gaming event called GDC. We can’t have a game jam making niche games and let reporters have time to talk about it. That wouldn’t be the done thing.
The results are above average. I say this coming from the 7DRL which is generally average, equal parts good and bad. The games produced in this jam are mostly good. There’s a few which clearly aren’t finished, and yet they show a great deal of promise. Even Brough himself submitted a game, one which is quite accessible and fun. Highlights for me included controlling a rather awkward squid that had to shoot in order to turn and a one dimensional roguelike that adds depth by throwing your weapons.
I hope they do it again next year.

I released my roguelite runner Bump 2 for the small audience that appreciates it. It’s one of those games that really appeals to a handful of people, and not to others in the slightest. In homage to my own select tastes and to unjinx my collection of unfinished projects, I resolved to make Bump 2 into its best form before walking away from it. And so I did.
I’m currently working on Kobold Dungeon Tester. This is my 4th (5th if you count Roomba Quest) interactive text project. I twice tried to write a novel in my youth and this project feel like a penance for my failures. Normally I would move on, satisfied the base idea works, like a puzzle, or a high score. A few kind words have convinced me that this one is different - it’s a story, it needs an ending. I shall try to finish it as best as I can.

ABOUT TO AUTO SNAP

layers to help you organise your work and to assign correct line-weights and line-types
projecting lines to help you transfer information between views
your textbook to ensure AS1100 standards, including for dimension
From last weeks class I knew I had to plan and organise my work, such Creating layers , Naming them and  colouring them before beginning the exercise. This will not only help me keep my work organised but it will make it much easier to read and understand. Additionally,  reading the dimensions and understanding the task at hand was made easier through drawing rough sketches of views. Not only will this help but save time and help with constructing the pivot bearing on the computer.
A quarter of the way through constructing my pivot object,  I found out  that I was in the wrong view port. (Minor hiccup) Not knowing how to change or flip the image I had to re-start. A time costly mistake. I have to remember to start in the right view port, Or find a command that can help aid this mistake.
During the task I found it hard to understand how use the

I will need to take some time and research these commands and formats in order to complete my project tool this week coming.
Helpful tips and tools to use I found along the way :
⁃         Create a template for A1 A2 A3 A4 title blocks - this will help save time in the future and help set out your work
This will allow me to visualise how to space out my work and determine what template will be more appropriate to use for a tool or instrument.
⁃         To rotate the perspective view I had to use the Rotate 3d command to rotate my drawing about the x axis.
- In relation to my PDF formatting and printing layout – I must make sure that the axis starts at 0,0 or else the image wont appear in the preview print.
- Using Projection lines
- Always refer to the book for AS1100 standards

Overall this lesson helped me build on the basic skills and foundations of rhino cad and hopefully has provided me with everything I need to know in able to attempt and complete my hand tool depiction on rhino.  
Altogether the success outweighed the errors I made today. I feel like I am slowly making progress and understanding how to use rhino.

Above is my completed Isometric City with a helicopter flying across the sky. There are four Sections to my isometric city. Below I will say what each section consists of.

Section 1 : There is a military base that is put there for the protection of the main building ( tall building ). No one knows what is inside the base. There are rumors that the M I 6, Men In Black and other top top secret companies weapons are stored there to protect Shinobi Enterprise.

Section 2 : Here is the front area of the building. If a person was to follow the walk way they would enter the building and see a reception desk. There are trees planted there and different cobblestone walk ways. The walk way also leads to the car park.

Section 3 : In this section, it is the private parking for people who work at Shinobi Enterprise. There is no need for people to worry about a vehicle being stolen or damaged. The military base also covers and makes sure that the cars are safe. If you work at Shinobi Enterprise than they are ensured with maximum safety. There has been a time when a mysterious car stayed at the entrance of the car park though.

Section 4 : For the final section there are no buildings built in the area. There are 24 hour cameras operating just in case people try and sneak in or stay in the area. The area is left for any animals to venture on.

Beginning - In the beginning ... there was nothing. All jokes aside, I first started by creating a military base and a telecom building. I hadn't even built any trees or anything. I wanted to just get something down and work from there. I had a slight idea before I actually build the military building. That idea was to have all four sections be apart of the military. I was going to have my section as an entire military base. That changed once I created my telecom tower and helicopter. It felt like I would not really want to create that in the end.

Middle - In class ( to help us all out ), we where given the option to be in charge of building something that’s usually in a city. For example a church, hospital, restaurant, bar etc. I choose to do the tallest building in the city. I already new where to put the building. I was going to replace my building that I have on the military base. Although I was assigned to create the tallest building, I wanted it to REALLY stand out. I did not want it just to be a normal / plain looking building. I decided to create the logos of some of my favorite and popular shonen anime’s and put them on the side of the building. The idea I had in my head was to have the logo placement representing a floor. For example ( the logo with the skull and straw hat ) represents the second floor. The floor below that is just reception. I must admit one hundred percent. Creating the logos for each and every different shonen anime did take time. I would say that I used the pen tool for creating the logos. Once that was done I simply went to the Effect panel and clicked ( 3D - Extrude and bevel ). That allowed me to create it and give it the illusion that its 3d.  did this going all the way to the top of the building. Each anime has a head office which can be seen on the side of the building next to the logo. If you look closely you can see a table.

End - I had finished creating the building, but the isometric city still had much to be done. whilst looking at my building and where i placed it, I was trying to think realistically. What is missing and what else would be needed for the buidling. It then clicked to me. A CAR PARK! I created some lamps to lighten up the car park for nighttime. I also created a car to add in the empty car park but I decided to make it look like its entering. I was able to use my friends symbols to finish up my empty spaces. That would be some of the trees and cars. He needed to fill up a section of his as well so I decided to share my car park with him. I made my car park a symbol and he was able to transfer it to his isometric city. With the tree ( symbol ) that he shared with me, I was able to fill up another section of my isometric city. We where bouncing off of each others work and helping each other out which was really fun. We where also talking about future projects. 
Tools - Creating the isometric city, I used mainly the Pen tool, I was able to make the 3d look in the effect panel. To help me out before i started creating the city, I made an isometric grid. I was able to follow a you tube tutorial up on you tube bedsides just sitting at my desk wasting time, wondering how I am going to create it.

Mastery Journal: Professional Practice
Mastery: Personal Development & Leadership
Reading the “Mastery” by Robert Greene was incredibly insightful and inspirational. I’ve had a completely different outlook on life and my long term goals because of it.
Defining Client Needs
I learned how to effectively use type for a design, how contrasting fonts can complement each other and catch the viewers attention. I experimented a lot with different fonts and type sizes to create an appealing layout.
Brand Development
I realized how important research is while working on the rebrand proposal for Rainy Day Toys. The more research I did, the more I learned about today’s generation and how technology has had a huge influence on our culture and development.
Effective Copywriting
This was probably the most unfamiliar subject I encountered during the MFA program. It’s definitely and art in and of itself and one I will be practicing more often in order to write clever and effective ad copy.
Design Research
I learned how important website wireframes and preliminary sketches are, before actually working on the final design. I did extensive research during this course as well, it inspired me to try new design techniques.
Organizational Structures
I enjoyed this course very much because I worked on a Motion Graphic for the first time and was very pleased with the results. I experienced a lot of trial and error while using Adobe After Effects because I had never used it before but I’m glad I was able to push through it, regardless.
Design Strategies & Motivation
I was happy to find out I would be able to revise the RDT and Event Poster projects, before completing the program. I ended up making significant changes to both and it made each project much stronger than they were.
Design Integration
I continued revising the RDT logo which, I finalized on this term and started working on the Testimonial Ads I had not been able to finish when I took Effective Copywriting. The feedback I received was incredibly helpful and provided new perspectives I did not consider before. Being able to receive constructive criticism, without taking it personally - it’s crucial for any artist.
Multi-Platform Delivery
I finalized the Testimonial Ads and began to work on the Enrichment Project for Urban Gardens To-Go. Time management was a huge struggle throughout the entire MFA program but especially during this course. I had to make sure my priorities were in order so that I could complete my assignments successfully.
Measuring Design Effectiveness
Creating a questionnaire for my own work was easier said than done. I had to learn the importance of asking questions that only relate to the design itself, and nothing else. This is very important in order to truly understand how the target audience perceives my design choices.
Presentation of Design Solution
I was nervous for the outcome of this course and made sure to work very hard on my Thesis Presentation and polishing up my Behance Portfolio. Having to write essays and work on discussion posts each month, improved my writing skills greatly. This ended up being incredibly beneficial when it came down to writing content for my thesis.
Professional Practice
I learned the importance of moral reasoning and ethics, for designers, when working on any project. This is crucial during our careers to ensure we conduct ourselves in the most professional, and ethical way possible. It is necessary in order to protect our creative work, and the creative work of others. Not only that but, it also provides the tools necessary to negotiate agreement terms with potential clients.

Week 10 - Assignment 3 Development Progress
Hello, and welcome to Week 10 of my GDevelop development blog. This week I will be covering a slightly different topic as alluded to previously, where I will be talking about my currently development with the Assignment 3.
What is Assignment 3?
Assignment 3 is a group project where 2 to 4 students team up together to work on a single game that has been been designed based on their assignment 2 one page and sell sheet. These are usually based off those prototypes that have been done over the semester; platformer, asteroids and racing.
My Group
When selecting a group I chose a group which was planning on doing a similar project as myself, an asteroids based game. This was to help keep interest in the project and want to work on someone elses project, since I knew not everyone would want to give up on working on their design. The group consists of Casey, Tim and myself. For this project we chose Caseys' game design.
Chosen Game
Asteroid Field Escape is an isometric bullet where you a mining ship thats warp drive has failed within an asteroid field, and you must manuveur and destroy asteroids and pirate ships. Upgrade your ship by destroying pirate ships and mining their parts. The game is a level based game and will have 4 levels (including a boss battle)
Development
When developing the project we split the work into multiple different parts. Casey had developed a good initial prototype from earlier in the semester, however it still needed quite a bit of work to reach the standard of what we wanted to achieve. The work was split into 3 different workloads:
1. Levels - which Casey was tasked to work on
2. Enemies - which Tim worked on
3. Boss and Menu - which I was tasked to complete
Everyone was able to finish their work and merge it together via GitHub, which I have been teaching them how to use. After completing this weeks work, we needed to set a goal for next week. Using these parts that have been developed we decided to piece them all together over the next week to create a cohesive game for playtesting.

This exercise was titled ‘In the Style Of’ and required us to recreate our Analyse/Draw subject in one of four styles assigned to us by our tutors. I was given the ‘Lego TV Remote’ style (as shown in the first image) and had to draw my phone in this style. This is one of my favourite drawings I have completed as part of this project. It fits in well with my apparent drawing style which is simple, clean lines. As one can see, I have used straight geometry and an isometric view to draw this piece. I also got to experiment with colour for the first time which really helped to accurately reflect the style I was assigned.

FMP/T3 Weekly Journals
Week 1 (22 Apr 2019 – 26 Apr 2019)
This week I have mainly been trying to catch up with my older blogs as well as finishing off my final zine for Liam’s session and finishing off my character design. Because I’ve mainly been trying to update my blogs and catch up with older work, I haven’t really learnt anything new this week. This week I have managed to finish off my final turnaround sheet of my character design as well as managing to finish off my final zine. I am happy with how the character design turned out, as I didn’t think it will look good after drawing the line art. I’m also happy with how the zine turned out, as it features the art work I’ve done which most all have something in common, even though the zine is simple. The only problem I’ve encountered this week was the fact that I couldn’t figure out how to print out the zine. I have managed to overcome this by sending the zine as a pdf file to my tutor via email. Next week I need to finish off my creative cv, my zine research and evaluation, generate ideas for my FMP as well as my proposal and finish off my MG assignment. On a scale of 1 to 5, I have rated this week as a 3.
Week 2 (29 Apr 2019 – 03 May 2019)
This week I have mainly been trying to catch up with my older blogs as well as finishing off my creative cv for Owain’s lesson and my zine research. Because I’ve been mainly trying to finish stuff off, I haven’t really learnt anything this week. This week I have managed to finish the main illustration for my creative cv, and I like how it has turned out, because I didn’t think the design of the main illustration will look good enough. This week, I haven’t really encountered any problems with software, as they have been working perfectly. However, my main problem at the moment is the fact that I’m far behind on blogs, and need to get them finished off for to do my final project. Next week I need to finish the rest of my cv, zine evaluation, generating ideas for my fmp as well as my proposal and update my schedule and finish off my MG assignment. On a scale of 1 to 5, I have rated this week as a 2.
Week 3 (06 May 2019 – 10 May 2019)
This week I have mainly been finishing off stuff from my previous projects including my zine, my creative cv, my collaboration with my isometric illustration of my airport. I have also been updating my blogs as well as generating idea of what I could do for my final project. Because I’ve been mainly been trying to finish my blogs, I haven’t really learnt anything this week. This week I have managed to finish my creative CV and my the isometric city collaboration and I have also managed to nearly finish one of my important assignment blogs which are my CV, Isometric City and my Zine. I’m happy with how the Creative CV has turned out as I have been struggling with ideas of what I should include to make it creative, but I think it’s good enough. I’m also happy with how my airport illustration fits in with the city collaboration as I think it fits and blends in so well with the rest of the illustration collaboration. I haven’t really encountered any problems this week with software, as they’ve been working more or less perfectly. However I think I’m still far behind on blogs, and I’m unable to carry on my FMP until it’s done, so I’m far behind. I’m also waiting for my zine to be printed out, so I can finish the zine assignment. Next week I need to finish my cv, isometric city and zine blogs by writing my evaluation, add a few more bits of info to my zine research, and carry on with my initial research and proposal for my fmp. On a scale of 1 to 5, I have rated this week as a 3.
Week 4 (13 May 2019 – 17 May 2019)
This week I have mainly been updating my blogs and have started generating my final idea for my final major project after finishing my evaluations from my other projects. I have also learned how draw different types of perspective, including the two way perspective, whilst drawing some experiments. This week I have managed to finish my evaluations for my zine and creative cv / isometric city project as well as finishing off my proposal and initial ideas for my FMP as well as starting some pre-production work and initial research. I’m happy with how the initial ideas turned out as I have always struggled with generating ideas and didn’t know what to do as a final piece for my project. I’m also happy with how the evaluations for my previous projects turned out as I’ve been trying to get my evaluations out of the way so I can proceed with my final project. This week I haven’t experienced any problems with software as the software I’ve been using for this week has been running perfectly. However, I feel like I’m still far behind with project work and been struggling with what to do with some of the research. Next week, I need to complete my research, preproduction work and update my schedules as well as starting my final project if I can. On a scale of 1 to 5, I have rated this week as a 3.
Week 5 (20 May 2019 – 24 May 2019)
This week I have been mainly finishing off my proposal as well as starting some research. I have also started doing some experiments with drawing in preparation for my final piece as well as doing some pre-production work. I have been introduced to a website of tutorials on digital art, including painting, which I will start experimenting with in art software soon and also learned more about the rule of thirds composition. This week I have managed to finish off my proposal for my final piece, as well as managing to finish off my initial and secondary research. I’m happy with how the research turned out as I think I have collected enough research on artist biography and their artwork to carry on with other criteria. I have also managed to get part of my pre-production work done as well as creating a couple of experimental sketches. I’m happy with the sketches turned out as I think they use a lot of what needs to be included in my final piece, e.g. perspective, composition, etc. and I may actually use one of them to render as my final piece. This week, I haven’t experienced any problems with software as the programs I’ve been using have been running perfectly. However, I do feel that I’m still far behind on my blogs and my project work, and have been struggling to keep up and understanding some criteria. Next week, I need to finish off a render experiment, my final piece, my primary research and further research. I also need to update my schedule and create a source bibliography. On a scale of 1 to 5, I have rated this week as a 3.
Week 6 (27 May 2019 – 31 May 2019)
This week was half term but I have been going into college this week with the exception of bank holiday Monday, and I have mainly been doing my pre-production work for my FMP as well as starting my experiment to test out new features and techniques with digital painting, which I have learnt by looking at various tutorials on YouTube and 3DTotal.com. This week I have managed to finish my experiment for my final project and have started digitally rendering my final piece. I’m happy with how the experiment turned out, as I have managed to complete it within a few hours after sketching it on the software I use, and also happy with how it turned out, as it’s my first ever attempt with digital painting. I do think that the painting could’ve gone better as there are some areas that look quite off, but overall, I think it’s looks pretty good for a first attempt. I haven’t experienced any problems this week as the software I’ve been using has been running perfectly. However I still feel like I’m behind on blogs and journals. Next week I need to finish off my final piece, primary and final research, pre-production work, and upload the process of the experiment and the final piece as well as writing down my evaluation and updating my schedule. On a scale of 1 to 5, I have rated this week as a 3.
Week 7 (03 Jun 2019 - 07 Jun 2019)
This week was mainly trying to finish off my final piece for my final project as well as finishing off my blogs for my project. This week I have learnt a few more techniques to create my final piece, as well as learning how to paint grass better with different brushes to make it look more realistic and extending one of my techniques that include using brushes to paint sun glitter / sun reflections on the lake on my final piece. This week I have managed to finish off my final piece for my project as well as finishing off my pre-production work and written the blogs on the production of my software experiment and final pieces. In terms of software problems, I had a software issue on my computer, affecting my final piece; while recording my the production of my final piece, my computer was running really slow and eventually closed down without saving. I have managed to sort of overcome this problem by setting the software to autosave every 10 minutes. However my final piece was being saved as a png file at the time, and was unable to make any edits after that, but my final piece was more or less finished during that time. I also feel that I’m still far behind on blogs and feel like I’m missing something on my blogs. Next week I need to upload my final piece onto Bēhance for presentation and need to update my bibliography as well as uploading the analysis of my experiment and final piece. I also need to collect any further research if possible. On a scale of 1 to 5 I have rated this week as a 4.
Week 8 (10 Jun 2019 - 14 Jun 2019
This week was mainly finishing off some unfinished blogs as well as uploading my final artwork to Adobe Bēhance to showcase and present my work to others. Because I have finished my final piece and have mainly been finishing off my blogs, I haven’t learned anything new this week. This week I have managed to upload my artwork to Bēhance with a description of what it’s about, inspiration and a short summary on the process as well as managing to finish off my further research and writing a short summary on my target audience. In terms of problems, I haven’t encountered any problems with software this week as I haven’t been using any software apart from Microsoft Office, which was running perfectly. However I still feel like I’m behind on blogs as well as having the feeling of missing on something on my blog. Next week I need to start writing my evaluation for my project as well as finishing off my bibliography for my project research. On a scale of 1 to 5 I have rated this week as a 4.

Presentations:
The presentations today were very well executed and diverse. The Trump White House project was perhaps the most narrative, as it considered the appearance of the White House after 5 years of Trump. This design has certainly improved through the iterations, as the level of absurdity was fine tuned. I’m excited to visit the final exhibit in May, as the sort of atmosphere created around the model will certainly influence the perceived narrative of the observer. The Wave project was similarly well executed, mostly due to the functioning of the prototype. The combination of a well conceived physical component as well as a functioning server and website make the prototype compelling, and expose the feasibility of in-home usage monitoring. Finally, the Veggie Pet design was presented. This design does well to foster a connection to a grown plant and the intended users, children. Further iterations would certainly yield a design that educators and parents alike would be interested in. 
Furniture Sketching:
As an engineer, I sketch ideas and concepts constantly. However, my drawings are often isometric, rigid, and drawn to represent details in a design. Today’s exercise was very different, as we focused less on details and more on representing design and overall aesthetic in furniture. This made me cognizant of how heavily I rely on defined edges, angles, and measures in my drawings. However, after a few blunder, I was more comfortable ignoring detail, and found it easier to draw fluidly. Retrospectively, my drawings became more qualitative, and took less time to complete each time. With more practice, I believe I’ll be better able to represent scale in my drawings more accurately, as currently I find scaling various components of the drawing to be difficult without assigning measurements.

Iron Danger: The Story of the Story
Story beats and dialogue are finally seeing the light of the screen.
A conversation between the characters tells the player that the healer can be found nearby.
The development of Iron Danger proceeded in an equal combination of fits and starts on the one hand, and leaps and bounds on the other. From the writer’s point of view, the most interesting step appears, as story beats and dialogue, written months ago are finally seeing the light of the screen. All the while I’m going back to those earlier pieces of writing, updating them to conform to changes in the game’s mechanics, level design, characters, enemy roster, and so on. As a result, the script is constantly in flux which is an interesting aspect of game writing. Nothing is set in stone before the game is finished and shipped, but then again, without a solid script, there’s no way to make progress on the actual levels in such a story-driven game. So in this article, we take a look at the process of writing the story that we started building our levels on.
It Starts With A Secret Ingredient When I first started working on Iron Danger, I talked with our lead designer about the story, and he gave me the kernel of it. He had been planning the game for a while and wanted the story to have real emotional resonance, not just one event after another. His insight was that to guide our writing and design in a direction that would produce that resonance; the story should have an underlying metaphorical level: we should treat the story as an allegory of an inherently resonating core metaphor, like a symbolist painting or poem. I thought that was a brilliant approach, and we agreed immediately to construct the story on his core metaphor. We would not make the core metaphor explicit, but its dynamics would provide us with a foundation, on which to construct a coherent story and game experience. The events of the game and the supporting characters, seen from the point of view of our heroine, would symbolize experiences and forces, respectively, relating to this core metaphor. What a kooky, romantic way to write a game!

Concept To Outline The core metaphor provides us with an idea. But ideas are cheap, as any writer will go out of their way to tell you. So, the next step was to turn that idea into the outline of a story. For this purpose, I wrote up a sequence of major events over the course of the game, in a table with one column for gameplay events, and a second one for the underlying meta-level meaning. This table went through a number of revisions until I was happy with the logic and structure of both sides. The meta-level was instrumental in making the surface-level story work. Whenever I was in doubt about an event, or some element seemed off, I looked at the meta-level meaning and used the logic of that side to figure out how to fix the surface-level problem.
When I was happy with my table, I turned it into a 3-page prose synopsis, divided into chapters. We dug into this synopsis with the lead designer and other members of the team, seeing how it could be improved, and translating it into an idea of the kinds of game content we would need. If I had invented a character or a place, someone needs to turn that into a game asset. And if I had written an event, say “Kipuna collapses from pain”, that implied another entry on our coders’ and animators’ checklists. Based on such considerations, we moved some of the characters and events around, fusing or removing extraneous ones, and tightening the whole skein a notch. Throughout it all, we kept the meta-level story in mind, to make sure we didn’t lose sight of the emotional core of the game.
To give the player hints, we can get the characters to look at something, or we can have them talk about it.
Scenic Route Once we had a good story synopsis, it was time to refine that into a list of actual scenes. We think of movies consisting of scenes, but games, of course, are made of levels. Right? Well, the approach we took was that from the story point of view, a level would consist of one or more gameplay scenes, interspersed by shorter, story-focused scenes that would just advance the narrative instead of serving up actual gameplay. I went through the prose outline, splitting it up into scene-sized chunks. These I labelled either:
cutscenes, in which the player would more or less passively watch a short presentation of information,
gameplay scenes, the meat and potatoes of actually running around, fighting enemies, and solving puzzles, and finally,
interactive cutscenes in which the player would control the main character in exactly the same way as in core gameplay, but with the focus on dialogue.
  These were further arranged into levels, sequences of scenes that would carry from one to the next seamlessly, each level separated from the next by a cut implying the passing of time.
The spreadsheet containing all this became one of our main tools for managing the production, with required assets listed for each scene, and each one assigned to a specific level designer. Although we all collaborate on each other’s levels, one person finally bears the responsibility of bringing the level to completion and making sure it hangs together. (Yes, I’m one of the level designers too, as are the lead designer, the producer, and the lead concept artist; nobody wears just one hat in our team.)
One of the earliest features that our programmers built into the first Iron Danger prototype was an examine action.
Two Steps Forward, One Giant Leap Back Of course, no big project — even a moderately big one like ours — proceeds from point A to B in a straight line. Time and time again, I find myself going back to the story outline with revisions, and small changes to our level spreadsheet are always ongoing. That’s how it should be, too! A game isn’t a piece of writing, and its story isn’t told when it’s written down: it’s only when we’re actually playing what we’ve built that we can figure out what really works and what doesn’t, and so we jump back frequently and make the changes to the story that our experiences with the game, half-finished as it is, tells us are needed.
So, what is the core metaphor? It doesn’t matter. If we’ve succeeded, the story will be entertaining and evocative, and if not, only knowing about it would not improve things. It’s nothing unique — on the contrary, it’s almost universal — and once you know it’s there, you can probably guess when you’ve played the game if we’ve done our jobs right. Now, I’ve got to fix some dialogue to take out references to an enemy we replaced with another one — seems like the right time to add a more in-depth look at the fundamental practices for creating dialogues.

The Three Goals Of Dialogue  Aside, of course, from providing work for voice actors, the dialogue in Iron Danger serves — you guessed it — three purposes:
Providing gameplay information to the player
Carrying the story forwards
Displaying the personalities of the characters and background information about the game world
  Those are three goals that sometimes might not have anything to do with each other, while other times being intimately connected. So I want to show you how we were trying to hit those goals when writing dialogue.
The three goals of the dialogues have not been set up in a vertical hierarchy, because each one flows into the others.
It’s Over Here, Dummy You might not think so, but communicating stuff to the player can be really hard. On the user interface side, pointing out the relevant slab of pixels can involve moving it, putting a highlight around it, making it blink, enlarging it, changing its colour… the list goes on. These are all tricks that use the inborn tendencies of our eyes and brain to guide our attention in the visual field. But we’re more complex than the average mammal, and we have an additional mechanism that most of them don’t: we tend to pay attention to what other people are paying attention to. There are two ways we can use this in our game: we can make the characters look at something, or we can have them talk about it. That latter option is one of the main uses we put dialogue to.
Of course, it’s not just about telling the player where to look; it’s at least as much about providing information the characters have, that the player does not yet have because of the limitations of an artificial game world. That’s why one of the earliest functionalities our coders built into the first Iron Danger prototype was an examine action, for when the player wants to inspect something the heroes come across during the game.
We wanted to have an experience reminiscent of older point-and-click adventure games and isometric RPGs, where the characters are surrounded by a large variety of objects of interest that the players can inspect at their leisure. While we don’t focus on complex puzzles, inventory management or the like, examining objects is still a core part of gameplay, giving the player advice on what to interact with and how.
The conversations should advance the story, give the player real information about what to do next, and round out the characters and setting.
What’s Going On A large slice of Iron Danger’s total word count (I’m not sure if it’s actually a majority, but it’s a lot) is in the form of back-and-forth conversations between two or more characters — that is: actual dialogue. Much of the story is presented in this form: the characters learn and make decisions through dialogue.
It’s all skippable… but if you do skip it, you’ll probably miss a big chunk of the story. In fact, we don’t want to put in any story-carrying dialogue that’s redundant in combination with gameplay. If we decide to tell something through player action, we don’t need to recap it with dialogue, except occasionally to clarify something.
Put In Some Flavour! You could say these three goals are arranged in order of necessity: players need vital information to play the game. They want to know what’s happening in the story they’re playing. And the rest? Character personality and background? It’s just nice to have. You could say that… but I’d disagree with you. These goals haven’t been set up in a vertical hierarchy. Each one feeds into the others, making them more meaningful.
The background details and personalities motivate the player to care about the world and the characters, so the events of the plot gain emotional force. And the plot is vital to motivating gameplay: if you know that the heroine is looking for a shard of ancient power, you, the player, are going to be looking for one in the game. And going all the way around the circle, the gameplay is what brings out little details of the game world and the characters.
The short examination notes are written from the perspective of each specific character, and different characters notice different things.
Mix It Up In addition, the interdependency of the three goals brings us to one core aspect of dialogue that works: it serves more than one purpose. Information that only helps gameplay is almost always dry. Dialogue that just advances story is typically boring, and usually skipped outright. And chit-chat that does nothing except show off the characters or the setting is useless. But combine two goals and nail both, and you’re, well, not guaranteed that the dialogue is worth the player’s time, but at least it’s a start. And if you manage to hit all three, you’re doing something right.
So, optimally, we’d like our conversations to move the story along, provide the player real information on what to do next, and round out our characters and setting, all at the same time. Whenever I write an exchange that manages to do that, I pat myself on the back.
All About The Point Of View The examine action is, again, one way we try to approach this target of hitting two goals at the same time. When the player examines an object in the game, this prompts a short piece of text — a bark — from the currently selected character, just a line or two. But these barks are written from the point of view of that specific character. And different characters notice different things. Sometimes it’s even worth your while to examine the same object with two different characters, to gain twice the insight, both into whatever you’re checking out, and the characters!
