In the Interests of Quality
Starting to assemble a list of noteworthy genre titles for 2020. Itโs a big task and I welcome the input of others! Iโm starting out by scouring Steam for eligible releases in the sci-fi category. I will move on to check some other locations later. However I am not a console gamer, so I welcome suggestions on that front.
To be eligible for my listing roundup:
Game must be released for the first time in 2020. No new translations or new ports of older titles.
Game should be reasonably complete! NO EARLY ACCESS.
Game should have non-terrible reviews - since I canโt play everything myself I have to rely on a little outside aid here to know if itโs at least worth thinking about.
Story must be a strong element of the game. Reviews should generally mention the story, and in a positive light. Many neat-looking games got dropped because people said the story was a mess, while one game is in here thatโs quite surprising but the reviewers insist it has a good story.
So first off, games that I actually PLAYED myself:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/746850/Cloudpunk/
Cyberpunk game, youโre a flying delivery driver, you encounter a lot of different stories and characters throughout the course of the night.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1047010/Synergia/
Cyberpunk but you start out working for the cops and end up getting progressively more entangled with AI rights as you go along. I personally felt it could do with more fleshing out, but itโs generally well-received.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1101310/Vengeful_Heart/
You guessed it, cyberpunk again! With a retro pixel aesthetic, and practically nobody played this except me. I think itโs a more solid overall experience storywise than Synergia is. Of the three, this is also the title with the most active protagonist. The PCs of the first two games are really just trying to get by and dealing with the crap that comes their way. This protagonist, after her life goes to hell quickly in the beginning, is trying to start the revolution herself.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1327540/Cross_the_Moon/
Itโs no secret that I was a fan of this and that itโs super-obscure and no one has played it. It IS scifi, despite the vampires. Itโs literary and strange and absolutely deserves more attention.
------
Now the list of things that I found by picking through the Steam listings which meet my scifi+story criteria but that I havenโt played myself:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/949600/Intergalactic_Fishing/
This is theย โwait, really?โ one that came up in my search which makes me curious to play it. Did not expect a fishing game to match but the reviewers SWEAR it has a plot.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1223500/Umurangi_Generation/
A photography game documenting a future gone wrong.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1323000/Space_Court/
Looks like itโs a short scifi comedy. The kind of thing that will never be noticed by the big leagues.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1321070/Death_Come_True/
Interactive movie.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/857200/Planet_Stronghold_2/
RPG with romance options
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1146310/Beyond_a_Steel_Sky/
Adventure, sort of post-apocalyptic
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1120560/Sense___A_Cyberpunk_Ghost_Story/

https://store.steampowered.com/app/941570/Relicta/
First-person adventure
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1283500/Euphoria_Supreme_Mechanics/
Adventure puzzle game?
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1137350/Filament/
Adventure puzzle game
https://store.steampowered.com/app/578650/The_Outer_Worlds/

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1181840/HIVESWAP_ACT_2/
Adventure
https://store.steampowered.com/app/717560/Lucifer_Within_Us/
Techno-gothic detective work
https://store.steampowered.com/app/983970/Haven/
I'm not sure what genre this is. Rpg/Adventure/Story/Thing
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1091500/Cyberpunk_2077/
Well this is obvious
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1058690/Signs_of_the_Sojourner/
A game about trading and conversation (which I didnโt really get into)
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1160220/Paradise_Killer/
A weird detective game.
