All right now we're cooking.

Somewhat.

With the new year and new habits I have been being a fucking idiot with my time and efforts yet again so we are gonna start slow. A step forward is still a step. No matter how small.

I started on a small project in Twine, a piece of software that is good for making game stories as it allows for easy drafting of visual novel style games. I got the intro and three options for it afterwards. No real characters yet just a rough start for an initial greeting. I'm going to see about drafting one story line all the way through to give myself some room to work with.

Basic idea is gonna be you just got to a college, and the goal is simply to secure a first date with one of three lucky entities. No idea how it will proceed from here though.

That reminds me there are a couple of games that would probably be helpful to revisit. Katawa Shoujo and Coffee Talk.

Both feature relationship building. Katawa Shoujo was the first real dating sim I ever played. You play as a boy with a heart condition who got transferred to a school for people with disabilities. Each of the eligible girls has a different one, from pure trauma to blindness and a couple in between. A surprisingly sensitive portrayal of relationships considering it's origin story.

Coffee Talk is probably closer to what I am aiming at creating but that is still a long way off. You play as a barista who offers comfort in the form of warm drinks and a friendly ear and advice to whoever comes your way. Building relationships and events are based around what drinks you are able to figure out. It is a fun experience that is much warmer than the world presented by VA11-Hall A despite having very similar mechanics.

I will probably go through VA11-Hall A later when I have a little more time and a better idea of the story that I ultimately want to make.

Anywho goals for next week. I'mma be busy so let's keep it simple:

Lets get the next series of choices down from Coffee Shop, I'm thinking something to eat as well, so figuring out how to add values to each choice will be next up.

Let's also do another 30 minutes of "Hooked on You."

Better to under promise and over deliver than over promise and under deliver.

VICES / BAD HABITS:

001. Inferiority Complex / Low-Self Esteem. Pearl automatically deems herself inferior to others or simply not good enough, falling victim to hysteria whenever failing to succeed on her first try. -- this usually triggers sentiments of extreme self-decrepitation or emotional fits. Additionally, these feelings of deeply seated insecurity & self-hatred turn her bitter / petty & coerce her to crave validation in any shape or form. She can come across as a know-it-all, as condescending or arrogant given how she will continuously bring up her achievements, knowledge & countless justifications as to why (e.g) she did what she did or why sth. did not work to counter these ever-looming feelings of utter worthlessness.

002. Obsessive / Borderline Neurosis. A vice that goes hand in hand with 001; Pearl is obsessed with the past (may it be in the shape of mistakes or ‘happy memories’), symmetry, cleanliness & people per se; especially Rose has always been a sore topic in that matter. In fact, her obsession went as far as to turn into a serious neurosis / the unquenchable urge to hyperfixate on something & mercilessly obsess over it in turn. Without something to obsess over, Pearl breaks apart. While she loves fiercely, this kind of behaviour is prone to “smother” those in her care. May it be through overprotectiveness or overly critical / a “mother knows best” kind of demeanour.

003. Terrible Coping Mechanisms / Living in Denial. Pearl is guilty of  “trauma compartmentalizing”; she represses her traumatizing experiences & memories in a self-destructive way. As demonstrated in “A Single Pale Rose”, her mind is structured in layers; the deeper “in” you go, the more she unravels & falls apart; on the surface, she tries to keep it all together but is well-aware of the mess waiting on the brink. -- Pearl additionally keeps amassing problems / trauma rather than facing any of them.

004. Stuck in the Past / Unable to Let Go; Probably a given one that does not require further explaining given what I already detailed further above. -- ever one to fondly remember the War & the role she had in it, she cannot let go of what once was. This is especially true whenever the casualties of war (guilt complex) or Rose Quartz are concerned; the latter coerced her to live the greatest half of her life (post Steven’s birth) trapped in a perpetual state of grieving & yearning for all she has lost.

005. Liar / secretive. Pearl has been prone to lie & twist her words ever since she was given to Pink Diamond 8000 years ago. What started as an attempt to protect Pink from the Diamond Authority soon turned second nature. While she usually lies out of a good reason, partially due to having been “forbidden” to talk about certain matters, lack of social skills + her compassion & eager will to spare e.g. Steven from harsh truths or to protect herself, it is a terrible vice she cannot shake.

BODY LANGUAGE:

001. gestures quite a lot; may it be with her hands or expressions. Usually underlines her points by sweeping arm or hand movements; prone to “put her whole body into it”.

002. Arms wrapped around her body, predominately her waist. Usually a sign of discomfort or tension that she simply cannot brush aside. Often paired with her glare wandering aside / avoiding eye contact.

003. Broad stance / legs apart as opposed to her feet usually positioned in First Position. Radiates rare moments of confidence, often paired with her hands either on her hips or wrapped around her lance / sword. She usually places said weapon on her shoulder or sprawled across it.

You live in a fantasy alongside her / the kind you dreamt about ever since you freed yourself from Homeworld’s shackles. -- it is the kind of love that demands & demands & demands all you willingly give.

003. Dance. a part of your very identity, even the part of the past you ought to loathe; a fact that leaves you aching. It is embedded in your very code. HEIGHT: 6′3″ or 193 cm. WEIGHT: between 178 lbs or 81 kg and 188 lbs or 85 kg. BODY BUILD: he’s slender, with an average weight for his height. despite not being too strict when it comes to diets or workout routines, greyson doesn’t have many issues keeping his average weight. he’s not lanky or overly slim, but he’s not out of shape either – he has a toned stomach and legs, and he has muscular arms. EYE COLOR: dark brown, depending on the lighting and weather their shade seems to vary from an earthy, coppery brown to black. EYESIGHT: his eyesight is impeccable, he has no vision-related issues so far HAIR COLOR & STYLE: if greyson was to leave his hair be and didn’t style it, he’d have a huge curly mess to deal with. on a daily basis, he keeps his hair braided into sections, tying the majority of the braids into a ponytail while leaving some of them loose. if he’s in the mood to change it up, he goes for two cornrows and if he really can’t be bothered with his hair, he’ll just braid it and leave it at that. that is, when his hair is as lengthy as it is now. when he cuts his hair and has it a little bit shorter than he has now, he either goes for center-parted cornrows or he just gets someone to braid his hair and ties it in a small ponytail. VICI. tattooed in uppercase. on his ring finger, he has the coordinates to where he and leticia got married tattooed in bold font. on very small scale/font, he has the quote i can be changed by what happens to me but i refuse to be reduced by it split in three parts on the right side of his ribcage. more recently, he has gotten XIII VIII MCMXVC - leticia’s birth date - tattooed alongside his left collarbone. besides that, there’s a KBN and a RNN - koda’s and romi’s initials respectively - micro-tattooed on his pressure point, just below his ear. PIERCINGS: he has a piercing on his left regular lobe. VOICECLAIM: asap rocky. ACCENT & INTENSITY: despite all the traveling around the world and residing in various locations over the past few years, greyson was born and raised in new york and his accent has remained intact all throughout. that being said, he has a really intense new york accent. Critical Role Miniature Rollout: C2E67

An archive and review of the minis used on Critical Role.

Quality episode, particularly in the encounter design department. Encounters with alternate objectives are so refreshing and engaging. In this session we are treated to a timed encounter, a puzzle encounter, and a spider encounter. What a deal. And the maps, as always, are stellar. The offset descending stairway was especially striking, what a smart and sharp way to present the combat. This episode ties the Campaign 2 map number record with three maps. Still holding out for that record breaking four map ep, but in the meantime let’s check out the E67 minis.

Giant Spider Dungeon Command Giant Spider / Dragoneye #54 Large Monstrous Spider

Not an especially exciting or interesting monstrous spider. But it does deliver in the biological design department. This spider looks reasonably realistic, like an arachnid that could legitimately exist. The original sculpt is from the D&D Miniatures Game and the onscreen spider is from the Dungeon Command reprint.

If this were a Call of Cthulhu campaign some party members would definitely have arachnophobia. Quite a few figures in this fight. A proper skittering swarm of spiders with some properly spidery models.

Deathjump Spider basically looks like a giant tarantula in a deadly jumping pose, a Death Jump if you will. A grand sculpt to be sure. So grand in fact that the sculpt has appeared in three different D&D products (two prepainted and one unpainted). The paint jobs look pretty unique, I would guess these are Matthew Mercer specials. Painted copies of the unpainted spider figures from the Castle Ravenloft Boardgame.

So here we have a black widow sorta design with the Spider of Lolth mini. Some quick questions regarding the title of this miniature, doesn’t Lolth hold sway over all spiderkind? How come this one particular spider gets the official Lolth title? What’s so great about this spider eh? Well the eight bright red eyes are a neat little paint detail. But the rest of the paint is nothing to write home about. And the legs are kind of spindly and goofy. Not the best spider, not the worst.

If there were a spider that Lolth would want nothing to do with, it’d probably be the Elemental Evil Wolf Spider. Totally puzzling gray/blue paint scheme, a very blobby, ill-defined sculpt, and an inaccurate name. This does not look like a wolf spider, nor is it the size of an average D&D miniature wolf. But when you have a whole mob of spiders on the table, a few stinkers are hardly noticeable.

Jester Giant Eagle Deadly Foes #032 Giant Eagle

Don’t look behind you Fjord! This figure has kind of a weird flight stand. But it works really well, so there’s not much to complain about. It’s a little wobbly, but the pose is well balanced. Excellent model resolution, all the features and sculpt details are really nicely defined. The sculpt fidelity is high enough that the flat paint actually looks pretty good. On a simpler model this paint scheme would be quite unflattering.

Caleb Giant Eagle Lords of Madness #39 Roc

A glamorous model. Just look at that majestic pose! I’m not especially into the inclusion of a stone on the base. Did the modeler/artist put a rock in the roc’s talon as some sort of delightful pun? Surely this has to be intentional. The paint on this figure is a little messy, but overall it’s a righteous roc.

A high quality miniature of a rather intangible creature concept. This figure is surprisingly true to the Invisible Stalker 5E Monster Manual art. A slightly funny looking pose on its own. But when positioned behind the mini of an unwitting victim this figure really sings!

The Zombies

A veritable horde of zombies contained in a single combat. Excluding the Mad Mage Preserved Corpse terrain pieces, there are a total of nine zombie representing miniatures. What do you say we rank them?

9. Strut Zombie Monster Menagerie 2 #008 Ghast

A decently good movement pose, but dirty paint and crummy model definition in the face.

8. Shredded Zombie Elemental Evil #009 Ghoul

A boring pose and paint scheme with reasonably defined muscle definition in the sculpt resolution.

7. Lunging Zombie Rusty Dragon Inn #005 Vampire Spawn

If it were not for the extremely kinetic and engaging pose, this model would have a worse ranking. The resolution on this model is pretty poor with bare feet that look like shoes and fists that look like spheres.

6. Neon Guts Zombie Unhallowed #44 Strahd Zombie

A model with perceivable toes and fingers. Fine sculpt fidelity but a terribly flat paint job. This zombie’s guts are hanging out, but they are oddly neon colored. Practically the same color as Caleb’s cat claws.

5. Skull-Wielding Zombie Rise of the Runelords #007 Ghoul / Undead Horde #003 Ghoul

Nice details, fun pose, neato skull and loincloth accessories. This dude kind of looks like he’s bowling.

4. Stylish Zombie Tomb of Annihilation #009 Chultan Zombie

This figure really stands out on account of its costume design. It’s very refreshing to have a generic commoner zombie that’s not wearing the same old generic medieval peasant garb. Also, this sculpt is pretty sharp and sports some clever undead details. This zombie is clearly malnourished. Bones and wasting muscle are visible in the plastic casting. Really nice. Really original.

3. Gnarly Zombie Demonweb #46 Corruption Corpse

Gross! Look at this thing. On second thought, don’t look. This is some Return of the Living Dead basement zombie level nastiness. The resolution on this figure is on point. All the visible bits of the skeleton and the textured filth sloughing off this creature is simply delightful. Of course I wish the paint were a tad more complex, but the simple paint is pretty effective on its own. 

2. Left 4 Dead Smoker Zombie Against the Giants #07 Visceral Devourer

A relic from miniature days of yore. When miniatures sculpts were literally sculpted. A relatively straightforward pose with so many beautiful details. The textures of the hanging clothing, the grimy shin guards, and the shredded undead flesh. This is the sort of richly shaped figure that is rarely seen outside this era of prepainted figures. Glorious.

1. Pincushion Zombie Undead Horde #004 Zombie

I’m a sucker for a properly battlescarred zombie. This zombie has a total of three projectiles stuck in him. Totally brutal. And on top of that, the toe of his left boot is busted open and he’s lost one of his gloves. But this undead dude could not care less, look at that expression, look at that pose, he’s having the time of his life (ironically)! This figure always gets a great response at the table. Players love it. I love it. You should love it too. 

Closing Remarks

As a DM who recently ran a miniature zombie horde, I really appreciate the variety and sheer quantity of undead in this session. Quite impressive indeed. This dungeon delve is proving to be quite the trek. This is certainly a dangerous place to take a rest. Sleep tight Mighty Nein.

Random Headcanons

001 He needs reading glasses. It's a fairly recent development (something he discovered after his resurrection) and he's not pleased about it, but it is what it is. It's rare and almost impossible to catch him with them, though, as his vanity will have him squinting at a page in front of other people before he'll dare put them on. 002 He speaks fluent, native Spanish (this is actually considered canon). The headcanon part comes in where I don't believe he was raised in England at all. His father was a British sailor (his mother is Irish - these things are also canon), but after his father's death at sea, and her with a baby to take care of, she ended up marrying a Spaniard and Hector grew up in Spain until he ran away at 13, learning both languages simultaneously. 003 Henry Morgan is the one that taught him to read, write, and mathematics. When he first joined Morgan's crew (at the tender age of 15), he was small, shrimpy, and not much good on deck, but he was smart and quick with numbers, so Morgan gave him a shot at navigation. Turns out he excelled at it. 004 With that, he was underfed and underworked on the Merchant Marine vessel he started out on, but once he turned pirate (Morgan raided the ship he crewed, and it was easy enough to just swap sides and run with it), he was entitled to a full share the same as every other crewman. So, decently fed with decent work hours, he shot up to six feet almost overnight. Which is also why he's still a beanpole. 005 He has several tattoos. Some are traditional, denoting he's crossed the Atlantic (an anchor - also for his past as a Merchant Marine), several swallows for the miles he's traveled, the compass rose because he was a navigator so long. But some are more personal and less traditional, denoting important milestones. Most prominent is the peacock (no, not for his vanity) which in the 18th Century was a symbol of resurrection, around a the scar left by Jack's bullet. His reminder he has triumphed over death. 006 He also has several scars. Some of them are stories that are hard to forget (the one on his face he got in his early twenties). Some have been with him so long he's forgotten the stories attached to them, but they're everywhere from bullet holes to great gashes to little nicks and stab wounds.

Critical Role Miniature Rollout: C2E34

A summary and review of the minis used on Critical Role.

Two episodes without miniatures and more without Yasha. What a welcome return to sword and board, combat-heavy, high adventure in this episode. Mighty exciting indeed. A reasonably long list of miniature assets and about a half dozen new miniatures to profile and review.

The Monsters

Water Elementals Elemental Evil #020 Water Elemental

Thank the gods this was not a sewer dungeon crawl. Sewage Water Elementals are bad news. Luckily, all the Mighty Nein had to contend with were normie Water Elementals. 

For my money, a good elemental miniature is one that carefully walks the line between looking environmental and looking humanoid. An elemental should look like the element they are made from but at the same time have subtle human physical qualities such as limbs, a face, etc. 

The Elemental Evil Water Elemental looks a little too much like water (as strange as that sounds). The humanoid shape and facial expression are both too vague for my taste, they are too difficult to make out. However, the sculpt, translucent plastic, and paint look brilliant, which mostly makes up for my minor, personal gripe. A very good miniature.

Genie Legends of Golarion #049 Djinni

This is an excellent genie figure. A dynamic pose, sculpt, and nice prepainted paint job. This figure has the appearance of flight without the use of a finicky flight stand and with a physical design that doesn’t compromise the durability of the figure. 

An interesting creative detail is that this genie has a cool looking fancy sword and an equally fancy sheath. But their shapes don’t match! First of all, genies don’t wear pants, so where’s this sheath hangin’? Secondly, can’t a genie just magically summon their equipment? And finally, what’s this genie doin’ with a sheath that doesn’t work with his sword?! It must be a fashion accessory or some sorta sheath-of-holding pocket dimension sheath. And if that’s the case... gimme that magic item! 

Large Water Elemental  Blood War #38 Large Water Elemental

A great example of an elemental miniature that looks like a natural element, but also has recognizable humanoid features. The mini can easily represent a regular body of water or an elemental creature. This figure has a noticeable pair of hands and a face. It looks humanoid without being distracting. And the wave appearance makes it perfect for any adventure with an aquatic, pirate, or surfing theme. 

The Villains

It’s nice to have a classically “bad guy” looking dwarf miniature. This is an Uncommon, so it’s relatively easy to get in boosters and is cheap on the miniature aftermarket. Pretty perfect for an encounter involving the large number of lackies from a dwarf-centric evil organization. The quality of the paint and sculpt work makes this a suitable PC or villain miniature as well. 

Other Dwarven Bodyguard Monster Menagerie #005 Jarhild Stoneforge

Get a load of this hairdo! Shaved sides of the head with a french braid. Definitely best in show hair for this episode. Put under that hair a quality action pose with some solid detail work and you’ve got a good mini.

Al Gore Algar Pathfinder Battles Erasmus, Human Medium

A bit of trivia, this miniature appeared previously in the World of WarCraft CelebriD&D Episode as the PC of Troy Baker. This as a great figure from a great line, the Pathfinder Battles Iconic Heroes series. All the Iconic minis are based on the canonical Pathfinder Iconics who are established class archetypes that exist in the Pathfinder universe. 

These characters seem to always get a little extra attention in sculpt resolution and paint work detail. Erasmus has a bunch of awesome details, distinct hair color, fingerless gloves, hand of tarot cards, and even a massive patterned scarf. These all match the original character art and are brought to life in miniature form quite successfully. 

The Spells

Hunger of Hadar Reaper Miniatures Bones Spell Effect: Shadow Tentacles

Hadars gonna hunger. Reaper Miniatures has some really wonderful spell effect miniatures, this one being the most obscure and specific. Very nice minis. If I did not already own an array of tentacle miniatures, I would surely purchase these. Shadow Tentacle is a solid name for a mindflayer btw. 

Hexblade Summoned Specter Archfiends #49 Cursed Spirit

This is a tricky one to identify, not a lot to go on. I reviewed the Alpha and YouTube footage like a bigfoot hunter with the Patterson film. Sadly this was the best angle I could get. The specter that Fjord summons is barely visible along the left side of the above screenshot. I should think we will see this class feature in the future and hopefully we can confirm the identity of this mini then. 

If it is indeed the D&D prepainted Cursed Spirit, I wholeheartedly support the use of this mini. It’s a fine looking ghostly figure. The sculpt and paint is so good it doesn’t have to rely on fancy translucent plastic to appear incorporeal. There is a version of this sculpt that does have translucent plastic, but the lack of paint on that iteration makes it difficult to see the details in the model. I prefer this, the original version.

Closing Remarks

The sluice is loose! What a sweet episode for combat, miniatures, and terrain. Thus far I’m enjoying Nicodranas immensely.

Caliana Hero Forge Miniature Painted by Guest Player Mark Hulmes

Another example of how capable the Hero Forge character creator is. Finding a prepaint for such a character would be very difficult, but for Hero Forge it’s no sweat. The half dragon effect in the painting is really remarkable. Very impressive paint work by Mark Hulmes. Half dragon, half half-elf, all awesome.

The NPCs

Febron Keyes  Harbinger #47 Human Thug

Stick, check. Barrel lid shield, check. Handlebar mustache, check! Human Thug has it all. This figure is a little simple, but the detail is solid. It makes a perfectly good bandit or skeevy marsh tour guide. 

The Monsters

Troll  Desert of Desolation #49 Feral Troll

For being feral this fella seems pretty put together. Hair nicely braided, clean shaven, stylish bracers, loincloth and skull buckle. This troll is great. Painting is solid, has a good weighty pose, and with lots of fun details.

This sculpt has been reused an impressive number of times. Generally a D&D prepainted sculpt will appear once maybe twice between its original release, possible promo repaints and/or resuage in board games. The Feral Troll sculpt has been used in four different product lines! D&D Miniatures Game, HeroScape, Dungeon Command, and D&D Adventure System. But that’s not all. This miniature was even made into a massive, to-scale statue:

The resemblance to the mini is uncanny. He even has the underwear skull flair! 

Merrow Tomb of Annihilation #026a Merrow (Hook) and #026b Merrow (Trident)

The sculpt on these has a nice flow. Generally, I’m not crazy about miniatures with terrain and props built into the base, but the inclusion of a wave is very nice in this case. There are so few swimming fish people miniatures and this helps fill that need. 

Closing Remarks 

Swamp life is tough, but this episode sure was easy on the eyes.

The Terrain

Wetlands Mats by Mars: Swamplands

Marsh by Mars, this is a slick map. No perceivable repeating in the textures. Really captures the marshy atmosphere. Well done Mat by Mars.

The Swamp Legendary Realms, Tiny Terrain, Model Train Trees, and Unidentified Tall Trees

Many a tree represented here. If you’ll pardon the pun, I’m totally stumped by the tallest of the trees. I’ve been unable to find the brand information. The very prominent vertical seam lines suggest to me that they are plastic toys of some sort as opposed to resin gaming terrain. I come from a long line of miniature lumber jacks, but I've been unable to identify this species.

Pillar Debris Wizkids Pools and Pillars

The miniature that should have been in the Victory Pit has mysteriously shown up in the swamp. There’s some sorta planar tomfoolery goin’ on here. A rift in time or the planes to explain how debris from a Victory Pit pillar got deposited miles away in a wetland. This is a killer piece of prepainted terrain.

The Monsters and NPCs

Kiri  Monster Menagerie 3 #005 Kobold

A smart and resourceful conversion. Kiri seems to be a repainted Monster Menagerie 3 Kobold figure. 5E kobolds don’t look particularly bird like, but when shrunk down and simplified into an Icons of the Realms mini, it very closely resembles a kenku. Very clever. The fact that this character did not just get a generic kenku or tengu mini bodes very well for Kiri’s longevity. What’s a pretty subpar kobold figure makes a solid kenku.

Crocodiles Lords of Madness #18 Feymire Crocodile

This is a great miniature. Impressive table presence and good details in the sculpt. The croc skin, ridges, and ghillie suit are all nicely defined. This figure is from the last set produced as part of the Dungeons and Dragons Miniatures Game series. The line went out on a high note with the Lords of Madness set. The fact that this is an uncommon speaks to the quality of this release. 

Closing Remarks

What I thought was a random encounter turned into a very significant NPC introduction. Looking forward to future kenku hijinks.
