Companion: Sophie Thatcher joins the "good for her" cinematic universe

One of my most anticipated releases of the new year was Drew Hancock’s sci-fi thriller, Companion. Starring Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid as lovers—or so we think—this movie was many things but above all, it was fun. It runs a little over 90 minutes and not a second of it goes to waste, though the third act was a touch weaker than the first two acts and could have benefitted from more of the snappy dialogue that made the movie shine. Still, I found more to like about it than not and it’s got the potential to be a fun Valentine’s Day watch—provided your partner doesn’t mind a little gore.

Sophie Thatcher just might be climbing the ranks of the scream queen hierarchy, taking her place near the top alongside celebrated horror icons of this generation, Florence Pugh, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Mia Goth. Not only is she magnetic to watch but the emotion—or lack thereof—that she expresses with her eyes alone sets her way above some of her contemporaries. Her character, Iris, was just enough of a manic pixie dream girl in the first half of the movie that her character development feels equal parts realistic and satisfying. Every final girl should come out of their film a little less wide-eyed and a little grittier, and Thatcher does this perfectly. By the time the credits roll, you can tell she’s reached the end of a journey—and you’ve gotten there with her.

Equally impressive was Jack Quaid, who managed to be almost likable before he revealed himself as the quintessential incel tech bro. While it was clear he was a caricature, Quaid’s acting felt fresh in a way that is hard to come by in the latest batch of movies that seem to pander to Millennial and Gen-Z audiences. It’s easy to harp on or make jokes at these generations’ expense; it takes a lot more work and is a lot more worthwhile to write something worth laughing with, not at. Regardless of how you feel about nepo-babies, Quaid is a good one to watch.

I wanted much more from the supporting cast, which included Lukas Gage as Patrick, Megan Suri as Kat, and Harvey Guillén as Eli. I especially wanted more from Suri’s character Kat, who could have subverted the girl-hate trope but instead played into its patriarchal hands. Lukas Gage was fantastic but this movie was overly heavy on fantastic male performances, whereas it only had one truly stand-out female performance: Thatcher’s. That could have been intentional, but it’s 2025: every movie should be passing the Bechdel Test by now. 

Performances aside, Companion had stellar writing, fun costumes, and a pretty, yet eerie, soundtrack. The 97-minute runtime flew by and I didn’t want it to end. Thatcher and Quaid had incredible chemistry that was the right amount of off-putting and his pet name for her—”Beep Boop”—was funny and concerning in equal measure. My personal favorite choice the film made was to have it conclude with the same monologue that it opens with. Every good thriller should leave its audience feeling a little unsettled, and Companion did just that.

If you liked Companion, you might enjoy: Fresh (2022), Don’t Worry, Darling (2022), or Ready or Not (2019).

So, here is my take on Ash's relationships with his traveling companions.

Misty: I don't ship them, but I do think that they have a really strong bond!! I actually headcanon that Ash didn't really enjoy Misty's company untill they parted ways, and that's when he started to miss her. It could go the other way around too. Unfortunately, this relationship is faltered by the fact that Misty and Ash clearly didn't like each other in the beginning and said some pretty nasty things to each other. To end on a positive note, pokeshipping is not my favorite, but I think Ash and Misty will always have a strong relationship with each other!!

Brock: I think Brock and Ash have a pretty good relationship, kinda like Brotp except for the fact that I don't ship them romantically. I think Brock was necessary for Ash's growth and I think Ash's company softened Brock up, he became nicer in other words. They are close friends and nothing more or less. Brock is an excellent older brother figure to Ash and he has been with Ash the longest out of his traveling companions so that also earns their relationship points.

Tracey: Yeah, this might be controversial but I think Tracey was the third wheel in Orange Islands. He practically invited himself into the group and Ash and Misty could both be pretty rude to him at times. Tracey and Ash are friends no doubt, but I wouldn't say that they are super close or anything.

May: So I think May and Ash helped each other out a lot but I don't think Ash is the closest to May because if I remember correctly, he was rude to her a lot of the time, they also don't have much in common, Ash is into battling and May likes shopping and contests. So yeah, I obviously don't ship them, Contestshipping is clearly superior!! I think Ash and May are good friends, especially after Ash mellowed out, but I think Ash has a closer connection with some of his other companions.

Max: I am not going to say that these two have a super strong bond or anything but I do think they bonded somewhat over the fact that they aren't into the the girly things that May is lol. Also, Max is a few years younger than Ash so the age gap kinda prevents a close bond from happening. Still, I think Ash and Max are friends regardless and always will be.

Dawn: She and Ash are besties!! There, I said it. I don't ship them since I'm more of a Dawn x Zoey person but I love these two as friends. Who could forget their iconic high-five and these two serve as great protagonists for DP. I love how much these two work off one another, they give sibling energy for real.

Iris: Speaking of sibling energy, Iris is like the twin sister Ash never had!! Iris is also the only female traveling companion that I ship Ash with romantically. I will argue that Iris is one of Ash's closest friends. They also work so well because they are exactly alike in terms of personality. They are both hyper, stubborn, love food, and care for their friends and pokemon deeply. And who could forget that one episode where they went sightseeing in Nimbasa city together. I love the duo of Ash and Iris and I wish people would stop undermining their relationship.

Cilan: So, Cilan tended to act like a father figure to both Ash and Iris. Sometimes, I tend to get the impression that Cilan was like the "Tracey" of the BW Trio, However to a MUCH lesser extent. Since Cilan at least had a lot of nice and heartwarming moments with Ash and Iris both individually and together. It's pretty obvious how much Cilan cares for Ash and Iris since he is always super sweet and patient with them. Ash along with Iris looks up to him for advice and guidance and he also admires Cilan's cooking. The only thing holding Ash and Cilan back from being super close is that Ash and Iris seem closer to each other, both in age and personality. Regardless, Cilan and Ash are still good friends and I think they always will be.

Clemont: If there was a male companion that I would ship Ash with romantically, it would have to be Clemont. Diodeshipping for life!! Ash and Clemont have been spotted touching each other several times, like putting their arms around each other while walking. It's also no surprise that Ash admires Clemonts inventions and Gadgets more than anyone else hence "Science is so amazing!!" Clemont and Ash also have never argued, at least to my knowledge. To conclude, I think Clemont is the closest to Ash out of the male traveling companions, Probably tied with Goh.

Bonnie: Unfortunately unlike her brother, I think Ash and Bonnie have the least amount of connection out of his traveling companions. (Besides maybe Chloe, but I don't count her as a companion and I haven't seen JN) I say this because I don't remember any significant interactions between Ash and Bonnie. But on the bright side, it's not like Bonnie and Ash truly need each other since Bonnie has both her older brother and Serena (who she has a much stronger bond with) to look out for her.

Serena: Alright.... These two are friends and nothing more. Yes, Serena has a crush on Ash, but Ash clearly doesn't feel the same way about her. If these two ever got together, their relationship would probably only last a few years max since they both have entirely separate interests and goals. I would even go and say that Serena and Ash have the least amount in common out of the traveling companions. Ash and Serena did help each other out a lot, but I think at most, they are good friends. Sorry Amourshippers.

So I am not fully done with my binge watch of Sun and Moon, but when I am done, I will make a separate post like this for the SuMo companions.

Earlier this week, we were able to chat with the incredible Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid to discuss their wicked new film, Companion. The film, which comes out this Friday, succeeds as a sharp and hilarious takedown of toxic masculinity and abusive relationships. And while the story admittedly centers on Thatcher and her iconic character, Iris, it takes a terrific ensemble to help the movie…

saw companion last night, which was a pretty fun watch. as robot movies go it wasn't really saying anything particularly new or groundbreaking but that's not what it's supposed to be, i don't think. it's more of a comedic twisty crime movie where things keep going wrong in unexpected ways, and it was definitely good at being that. i'd heard it described as one of those films you should go into without knowing anything and you probably don't have to, but i think my experience was enhanced by not knowing what to expect next. thankfully the film knows that "sophie thatcher's character is a robot" is not the main twist and gets that out of the way as early as possible. (i'd only seen one teaser trailer, which is just her handcuffed to the chair and burning her arm on the candle, and tells you nothing about the plot of the film, so i was going in pretty blind.)

the figure of the robot woman is usually used as a commentary on misogyny and the idea of men wanting girlfriends they can literally own and who will serve them devotedly without a single thought for themselves, and there's certainly plenty of that here, but it's not entirely about that. (diversity win! gay men can treat their partners as objects and possessions too!) this is not the kind of film that's really going to explore that theme in all its implications. it's a tight runtime. still i think the opening shot of iris serenely walking through a grocery store aisle pushing a shopping cart is intentionally evoking the iconic final shot of the stepford wives

having just caught up with severance i think there's a lot to be said about the parallels between that situation and fiction dealing with clones, sapient robots, and other artificial versions of "real" people developing self-awareness and questioning their individuality and personhood, and their rights as sapient people. i just hope no one tries to comment on any new fiction about this kind of thing with "this is more relevant than ever in the age of AI technology!!!" because fully sapient ai is a completely different world than what "ai" is used for in reality, and very much not what we have to worry about regarding it, and any commentary you can make about the current discourse surrounding ai will have to be different from "what if it gains self-awareness and Takes Over???"

that said, i like that our more modern examples exploring that theme are tending to come down on the side of the robots asserting their personhood. since fully sapient robots are not likely to be real anytime soon i feel like i can identify with them more easily; just because i think and process the world differently from you doesn't mean i'm any less real, right?

There's always something a bit unsatisfying about self closing paradoxes... kinda like "oh it was all a dream so it didnt matter". but i think in this one it was crunchy enough with other things that i think it was balanced.

anyway i dont think the political stuff is what it was really "about". i found this story very moving on what it was (imo) rlly about: ruby's fear and experience of being abandoned and also the general "fear of approaching death"

and obvs a bit of other emotional beats that are more specific to doctor who's long running stories: like the doctor "always does this" ie leaves everyone of his friends behind and there's the lingering tragedy that this will happen, as well, to ruby inevitably, then also both ruby and the doc becoming 'detached' from real life (ruby basically never investing anything in those relationships w/ those guys bc she was 'absorbed' by this mystery /clearly a parallel to her being absorbed by her parental origin) and also how tourists cant watch where they step / the doctor and co arent always respectful to the 'silly traditions' of the places they visit (tbh excellent bc to overcome my "this show has the white man's burden' engraved in its dna" meta... the show is gonna have to keep making story like and like Demons of Punjab for at least 3 more decades lol) (basically tldr i think it fumbled the politics stuff but it was rlly crunchy where it mattered. also, ....... i think this pretty much confirms that ruby isn't her own mother / the person who let herself at the door step in Christmas, right??? like rtd had said was the short story he had concocted years ago, and was the insp for this... but he kinda used up that trick here… so it must be something/someone else, right?) sharing some Addison Project WIP for WIP Wednesday. finally started working on the first draft and having a lot of fun with it! Introducing foreign concepts is always a blast.

The two people finally walked around the room and into view. Her guess had been spot on; one krytian and one half-krytian. The krytian was tall and broad, with a long snout full of sharp teeth. His eyes were a slightly luminescent night-sky blue, all iris and no sclera, with slitted pupils like those of a cat that seemed to stare right into Addison’s soul. A tail swished from side-to-side behind him, covered with the same white scales as the rest of his body. A magnificent pair of horns sat upon his head, almost scraping the ceiling in their splendor. Most curiously, there seemed to be a symbol of some sort, painted or tattooed on his forehead; a circle, intersected by a strange shape.  The half-krytian was much less intimidating. As most half-krytians did, he still bore the iconic horns of their species, but everything else about him just seemed… wimpy. He was somehow both short and lanky at the same time, with an equally skinny tail that wrapped around one of his legs nervously. His sandy-blonde hair was limp and greasy, his otherwise tan skin was dotted with white scales in random places like freckles, and even his eyes, which were the same entrancing blue as his companion’s, lacked any hint of the intensity of the krytian’s. It probably didn’t help that his pupils were dilating in the dark room, making him look at least five years younger than he probably was and giving him the air of a lost puppy. If Addison had to guess, she would say that this was a father-son duo, based on their similar features.

a lot of stuff in this is still placeholder, like the name 'krytian', dunno if i'm gonna stick with it in the end product, but the designs should stay relatively the same. Did the designs come across okay? feedback welcome!

The Fool (Fortune's Favour) Bottle Label -- by Sam Roche.

I designed this bottle label for a small batch of personal-use mead. For two best friends who wanted to showcase a tarot theme.

Because it was their first batch, The Fool was the ideal Major Arcana. I incorporated mead/honey-themed designs within the project. Instead of The Fool's iconic bag on a stick, he carries a hive on a stick. Instead of his dog companion, he has a bee.

The symbol the two mead-makers imprint in the wax seal (not pictured) is an eye, so it was important to incorporate an eye in the project as well. I thought to make the iris blue, like a Nazar (or Evil Eye), to stay on a bit of a spiritual-theme.
