Hiya, just out of curiosity if you dont mind me asking. What do you think the serious dealbreakers with PVDA you mentioned in your tags are?
Yeah sure! For context - my political stance is v much "human rights lawyer" first and foremost, which I'd situate in ideological terms as democratic socialism + humanism (for lack of a better/less archaic term). Basically, my politics are informed by a fundamental bottoms-up centering of (individual and collective) human rights and the inalienable and uncompromisable value of (individual and collective) human life, dignity and happiness. Not to "no true scotsman" bc I know that a fuckton of leftists and socialists define their leftism according to other measures, but I, personally, fundamentally do not get how you can hold leftist beliefs and yet be willing to compromise on the fundamental value of human life, dignity and rights. This stance is where my dealbreakers come from. Explanation under the cut:
So, in this context: I find the PvdA to be largely hypocritical in their stance on many important issues, and imo this hypocrisy is rooted in a loyalty to abstract ideology (communism/Marxism) over what should imo be the concrete foundation of that ideology (human dignity, structural equity, etc). Most importantly, I refuse to vote for them bc I find their stance (as demonstrated by repeated votes in Parliament, even if they often state otherwise in communication) on the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the human rights violations committed by China against the Uyghurs absolutely unforgivable, and increasingly so as compared to their very vocal stance on Israeli occupation of Palestine - either you condemn genocide and crimes against humanity or you don't. Picking and choosing is morally bankrupt imo, and revelatory of 1. the party's loyalty to (historically) communist countries over its loyalty to oppressed people and 2. yes, as revealed by the contrast, antisemitism, which has been a problem with the PvdA since long before October 7th and has been one of my dealbreakers forever as well (as it is for most European far-left parties, tbh). (Beyond the generalised antisemitism within the party, I also feel they excuse too much racism in general in order to appeal to the "white proletariat" that remains their primary voting base.)
More specifically for less huge dealbreakers, if you look at their party program and their answers to the stemtest questions etc, they're also just an annoyingly populist party that frames their surface communication to appeal to knee-jerk reactions but hide their actual stances in convoluted language - I compared the Groen and PvdA stances on many issues, and regularly the PvdA would say they were in favour of smth Groen was against or vice-versa, and then I'd read the explanation and the thing both parties actually wanted was the exact same thing, except the PvdA wanted to appear more radical than they actually were (ex.: PvdA said they were in favour of strikers blocking fellow workers' access to their place of employment while Groen said they were against it, turns out both parties were actually just in favour of striking booths to allow strikers to encourage fellow workers to strike without actually blocking their way into the building). I don't like it, it's paying lip service to appear more progressive than other left-wing parties and it rarely actually is. Another example of this is that they are against projects and education about gender identity in schools bc "imposing an agenda upon youingsters may be counterproductive and we should focus on supporting bottoms-up initiatives" which is a very nice way of framing a stance that fundamentally means "queer youth should be willing to endanger themsel ves by proposing queer-related projects to their peers and teachers and only then will we provide them with education and support - no of course this is not a way of de facto lowering the amount of queer education in schools and the exposure of minors to queer issues what do you meaaan".
Less dealbreaker and more general ideological disagreement: I'm just not a Marxist. I think the class struggle is very real, but I disagree with the PvdA's way of lifting it above all other forms of inequity and of ignoring the role other forms of structural oppression plays in class oppression. I disagree with their decentering of other forms of/structural/intersectional oppression which in my opinion and according to my research are fundamental to the cycle of oppression necessary to create a "lower class". I also (hence my vote for Groen) disagree with their decentering of ecology in favour of industry-focused "workers' solidarity", bc climate change will affect the most oppressed and vulnerable among us first and thus is not at all a "privileged Western bourgeois" issue.
But yes, TL;DR: my dealbreaker with the PvdA is its loyalty to (historically) communist countries and abstract leftist (Communist/Marxist) ideology over its loyalty to and solidarity with actual, real, concrete oppressed people.

most of these i just got a "unlikely to progress" through seek, or outright ghosted. some of them did give me the auto reject email or an email from a person for rejection. but with these numbers..... how the fuck do you think people are ACTUALLY GETTING jobs????
and mind you, this is ONLY seek (which is a big job board in australia and NZ). I have NO idea the amount of applications these places ALSO HAVE across other platforms such as indeed, jora, adzuna, ethicaljobs (for the NGO/charity etc sectors for the jobs in housing or disability support jobs etc), the dreaded linkedin AND all the other job sites.... and actual employer sites that I've applied on directly. (except for the dept of communities and justice (dcj) housing officer job that I had an info session for just on wednesday this last week.... where there were 120 other applicants in there with me, but STATEWIDE [bc it's the new south wales gov housing dept homes nsw]). but yeah. fuck off with the "nobody wants to work anymore" bs.

oooooh so open-ended I love it!
being an ~Athlete~ Nate is habitually a morning person and typically runs in the mornings. Dan can not understand this. Nate will pester Dan to come on runs with him every so often because it's good for Dan's mental health, but, god, at what cost?
Nate starts learning to cook under Dan's tutelage. there's the basics: eggs, pasta, grilled cheese, pancakes. the first time Nate manages to cook breakfast on his own he is so proud of himself. but there are a couple times when he sets off the smoke alarms.
Nate is such an easygoing down to earth guy, so he's not typically or outwardly materialistic, but every so often he will say something so rich-boy-unhinged, about food or wine or clothes or hair products and Dan takes psychic damage.
they do their own march madness brackets every year and they never win, but their bet is who loses first buys dinner and drinks next time they go out.
my favorite vocations of choice for Natie change with the wind: community outreach for a major league team, PT for a major league team, school teacher, pediatric nurse, social worker, but Dan is always a writer/house-husband/stay-at-home-dilf. he goes to grad school after college, and nate is his rock through it
(I think it was waldorfhistoria who told me that in the books Dan goes to a MFA program at U of Iowa? what if Nate followed him to the midwest? omg, what if nate follows him to Iowa and that's how he learns to be a grassroots organizer?!?! ohhhhh the potential...)
i already put this in my dilf!date fic, but Nate is the one who proposes. he plans this big romantic trip to the mountains, he gets use of his uncle's ski lodge, he books this grand romantic dinner but before they get to that night, Dan gets injured on the slopes, and Nate feels so bad about it that he just mopes the whole time bc he just wanted Dan to have a romantic, happy time and be able to walk and now he's like "i can't propose after i almost killed him!"
but Dan picks up on his bad mood and in typical Dan fashion teases until he pushes Nate over the edge and Nate goes and gets the ring and he's like "here!" and dan is just *shocked pikachu face*
but OF COURSE Dan says yes and their people are very excited and Blair says she'll be throwing them an engagement party but not until Dan's ugly walking cast is off
also when the cast is off Dan does his own proposal and gets down on his knee because Nate deserves it!
Nate's parents are Trash and aren't very supportive of date from the start but Nate goes through his mourning period and is pretty much at peace with cutting them out. If they don't want to be here then they don't deserve to be.
and all of Dan's parents (all three of em) bend over backwards to make Nate feel like he's in their family - which he like, basically already is.
the first time Alison sees him after he breaks up with Howard and Anne she tells Nate "I'm Mom. Don't you ever call me anything else."
their wedding is small. they go somewhere together every summer, a house on the beach, maybe Hamptons, maybe elsewhere, so after they get engaged they tell their people, "Okay, we're going on our vacation these days, we'll be getting married then, come if you want" (of course they want). so Jenny, Eric, Serena, Vanessa, Blair, Scott, Rufus, Lily, Alison, they all come. (Howard and Anne are not invited, but they are informed)
Eric officiates. Serena makes a toast that opens with "I take full credit for this relationship!"
Nate is not A Reader, but Dan firmly believes that there's a book niche for everybody, after some trial and error, they find that Nate's is FANTASY. Howl's Moving Castle becomes one of his favorites.
Before they have kids, when Dan goes on book tour, Nate will always come along for a week or two. He's very good at working a room, and shining a light on Dan is his favorite reason to do it.

grew up with alcoholic parents who were never violent but often neglectful and forced raf to have to learn to take care of himself pretty young. his mom suffered post partum depression for several years. she got sober when he was around 5 and they started bonding finally but dad never managed to get fully sober
did some acting out in high school but nothing major. immediately after graduating started dating delilah, the best friend of his senior year girlfriend, and got married three months later, when they were about 19
at 20 had their first kid, sadie. rafa had no idea what he wanted to do with his life and needed to support his family so he spent a lot of time going from job to job
was NOT ready to be a family man yet. loved sadie more than anything but had a hard time giving up partying and shit so by the time sadie was 5, he and delilah got a divorce. it wasn't lack of love but rather lack of being able to co-parent successfully in that situation
things got a lot better when he moved out. he took sadie on weekends and was able to do his own thing (for the most part) during the week
at around 27 he started going back to school and decided on social work. got his degree from seattle uni and then went on to do his msw at uni of washington school of social work. he started out working with schools and youth programs and finally in his early thirties landed a really good job as a social worker for troubled teens at a youth services center where he runs a program and does group therapy and some individualized stuff

B.C. pharmacists were granted limited prescribing powers under the new health plan

Big changes are coming to British Columbia's beleaguered healthcare system, including granting pharmacists limited powers to prescribe and renew medication as a way to relieve the strain on family doctors. Beginning October 14, pharmacists will be able to administer more vaccines and renew prescriptions for people who have lost their primary care physician for a limited time. They will be able to prescribe drugs for minor ailments such as urinary tract infections, allergies, acne, and indigestion, as well as contraception, by next spring. Adrian Dix also announced 128 new seats at the UBC medical school's only doctor training program, as well as an expanded scope of practice for paramedics and first responders. The healthcare crisis in British Columbia has been brought to the forefront in the last year, with staff shortages closing emergency rooms in rural communities and ever-expanding wait times for urgent and specialized care. Almost a million people in the province do not have a primary care physician. The changes announced Thursday are part of a larger five-year plan to address long-standing issues in the healthcare system. "The goal is to provide the care that patients in our province deserve," Dix said. The president of the BC Pharmacy Association stated that no additional training is required for pharmacists in the province to implement the changes. Dix stated that the new powers are similar to those already in place in Alberta pharmacies. The UBC faculty of medicine will add 40 new seats beginning in the fall of 2023, with another 40 added in 2024. An additional 48 residency positions will be added by fall 2028 to accommodate the expanded undergraduate program. According to Dix, 90% of all doctors who graduate from British Columbia stay in the province. The newly announced expanded functions for first responders are intended to improve patient care and relieve pressure on hospital emergency departments. Ambulance paramedics will soon be able to perform advanced life support and pain management procedures that are currently not part of their scope of practice. Firefighters and other first responders will be trained in blood pressure and blood glucose testing, administering epinephrine for serious allergic reactions, and preparing patients for transport by paramedics. The report outlines numerous strategies for improving healthcare personnel training, recruitment, and retention, such as streamlining how international nurses enter the system and establishing clear workload standards to prevent worker burnout. Dix stated that BC must compete for healthcare workers in the global marketplace, as demand for services in the province is expected to grow by 14% by 2032.

y'know I find it so funny how (before hopefully I shut up about them for good), that like a month after I started at my old cadetship workplace back in 2022, they made me sit through a fucking 45minute [but I dragged it out for 2hrs trying to guess the perceived right answers they wanted] personality test that listed my top like 10 strengths, weaknesses and other skills to develop (eg one skill to develop was 'influencing and motivating' or whatever, one weakness was that i often act without thinking or something like that, and my obvious strength was writing).....
and like we had full meetings about my results on that test, and how it might "hinder or aid your (my) productivity" and bullshit like that..... but then they blatantly did fuck all to develop my influencing/motivating, or whatever the fuck that bs test called them skills. they fully ignored that I was a good writer, so they never gave me blog posts or social media posts or got me to write a newsletter article to do with the marketing team. the only VAGUELY writing oriented task I did was copy and pasting case notes from the social worker/tenancy support worker into an excel spreadsheet where I (probs illegally tbh) edited the spelling, grammar and other issues with the case notes bc some of the typos drove me insane tbh. for other things, they never developed or helped curb/develop in a more positive way for my weaknesses.... and just endlessly criticised me instead or never gave real constructive feedback to help me improve.
hell, i could've even helped write the case notes for tribunal for this one tenant we had committing centrelink (aussie social services) and rent fraud wouldve been great! but NO! even that was irrelevant to me, even though I sat directly between my team leader/manager AND rent review, who talked over me about it every fucking day for 3 months. we ended up backdating their unpaid rent 30k if you're wondering. like ok yeah. given this was a management and senior management issue, that was obvs too big for a trainee to be part of. but also! I'm DIRECTLY IN THE MIDDLE of the two people investigating it???? why won't you INCLUDE me???? when you talk over me about it constantly??? dumbass workplace. I swear to fuck.
and I only say this bc I scrolled past this one shitty asf recruiter yesterday on linkedin, who was all like "one whole reason, YOU PERSONALLY have an employment gap on your resume is bc the YOU took too long to be trained by a company and that's just tooooooo expensive and wasteful on company expenses 😥😭 consider that YOU created this problem and the company SHOULD NOT have to train you well enough to do the job!"
like joey. I was IN a TRAINING PROGRAM and the useless ass company I was at REFUSED to train me at all costs and then told me to get assessed for a learning disability/depression/anxiety, bc "you just cant learn fast enough"..... when I was LITERALLY SIGNED UP TO BE TRAINED.
this WAS NOT MY FAULT. there should be adequate onboarding practices and training provided in every workplace, but I was actively being denied it bc I wasn't the bitchy backstabbing type to get anywhere in that workplace. I did not take "too long" to get trained when they actively denied me training opportunities EVERY time I asked for them, by telling me that "thats irrelevant to you!" and "just accept that it's not in your journey with us 🤷🏻‍♀️😬" . fuck you and fuck the corporate overlords who think that training people properly and adequately is just "toooooo expensive and employees should train themselves for free/at their own cost". most esp in fields like social and community work that I was in.
this workplace just did NOT want me to develop and hone my skills in any way, shape, or form, really. they instead dragged me through a useless ass personality test and deliberately ignored my interests, strengths, and weaknesses to develop and then blamed me for "being too slow" and "can't you just teach yourself?? are you Special™️ bc you can't interpret the tenancy succession policy and tenancy software procedure on your own without explicit inperson direction????" they refused to walk me through complicated tenancy procedures and policies when they'd do it with every other new hire.
I did not "take too long be trained"..... when they just actively treated me as a useless intern my entire year there. so I might as well just act as a trainee the entire time and continually ask for help even though it pisses people off (besides the point the ONE TIME I tried to solve a call on my own in the dumbass fucking 2min call window (I usually took like 15mins lmao).... I got told off bc I didn't ask for the correct paperwork and evidence (power of attorney bc the lady just said 'I think my mum has dementia.... so I'm just taking over ALL of her accounts for her) all became they NEVER let me sit on a call and listen in on what the hell to ask for (ie a living skills assessment) because THEY REFUSED to give me training on it (and also I think they thought my cert IV in housing course covered this issue. it didn't).... so how the fuck was I SUPPOSED to just automatically and INTUITIVELY KNOW what questions to ask and what paperwork and assessments etc I needed from the client???? fucking bizarre. and to this day I still have no idea if my mentor/manager ever bothered to follow up and rectify the issue for me.
also, right before i left in 2023, they actively KICKED ME OUT of an external (but internally in the office) all day training session on home visits/inspections bc "oh we booked the whole customer service team by accident!!! we booked you in error. so delet yourself now from the training invite right now!" literally the DAY BEFORE the training was to happen. yet they let the new (at the time) cadet go. and yet, they lectured me all the time on my "poor time management" and "poor planning and timetable coordination" or whatever the fuck skills. like ok given that I left that week, so in a sense, that training would've been wasted on me. but also. you told me THE DAY BEFORE and not 3 MONTHS PRIOR (ie when they booked it in the calendar and invited me to it) thag I wasn't invited??? how am I the one with poor time management in this scenario???? fuck you. bc it was the only other external training they'd offered me other than child safety and mandatory reporting.... which is understandably mandatory in this field. WHY can't you spare me ONE FUCKING DAY of outside training??? like they even denied me fucking first aid and CPR???? which is also usually mandatory in this field. all bc "you'll be with someone whose qualified??? why should we bother putting you in CPR and first aid training???"
but yeah. fuck that useless as workplace and fuck recruiters which think people who have gaps on their resume are jobless bc "oh. you just take too long to be trained, huh? what a suck on resources YOU PERSONALLY must be for ANYONE to hire to successfully carry out any role!" and my point is, they even denied me BASIC mandatory training in things like cpr/first aid??? how the fuck was I supposed to excel and be trained here????
bc it also largely falls on companies who REFUSE an employee who was ACTIVELY a trainee adequate training for dumbass toxic workplace reasons.... and also blame employees for issues they CANNOT rectify... like the shitty government aged care call centre that I worked at in feb and march this year.... all bc my phone app (which is THEIR back-end tech issue) that I couldn't fix by simply turning a computer on and off again) was back connecting to calls ALL the time, which meant I couldn't take calls during my training weeks (only 6 weeks).
so they did call me a "drain on resources" because the people who I sat with actively took quality on my calls and were apparently put in like "off boarding" mode bc they weren't actively doing the job of taking at least 30 calls per an 8hr shift.... but instead assessing me for quality. so it's also shit employers in general. so I quit instead of being fired.

since apparently nobody on this godforsaken website knows how to google things or engage critically, some of yall been usin harm reduction in completely irrelevant ways that misconstrue what harm reduction actually is and, believe it or not, that fucking hurts people.
harm reduction: is the idea that moral judgement is not a productive aspect of addiction care and accommodating drug users. it's any practice designed to minimize the potential negative consequences of drug use and prioritizes overall well-being over stigmatizing drug use any further.
harm reduction is a relatively new idea that's only been put into practice in the past few decades, which is pretty fuckin sad considering the majority of it is common sense and was already practiced unofficially in certain marginalized communities.
what does harm reduction include? a whole lot of shit
needle exchange programs
decriminalization of drug usage
community support and outreach programs
access to naxolone (also known as Narcan,) which can reverse the effects of an opiate overdose
recovery programs
supervised injection sites
access to related healthcare without threat of discrimination or legal action
etc.
harm reduction is a wide-ranging field of strategies, it boils down to respecting drug users, meeting them where they're currently at, and keeping all involved parties as safe as possible.
addiction is horrifically stigmatized, and this stigmatization leads to families being ripped apart, people overdosing, incarceration, and a host of other consequences. for many of us, addiction is a reality that we cannot ignore. it's ourselves, our loved ones, our communities. as it stands, marginalized communities are disproportionately affected by the stigma of addiction and drug usage, especially communities of color and poor communities. i am from appalachia, and while i'm not personally in recovery, i was raised by a mother who is. i grew up going to 12-step programs, and i've seen the way the system and its view of addiction destroys lives.
i say this to show the stakes. harm reduction is the first time that the needs and humanity of addicts and drug users has really been formally considered by organizations, much less local governments. it's potentially game-changing for many people. harm reduction saves lives. it keeps kids from being raised by grandparents or in the foster care system. it keeps people from OD-ing in the streets. it gives the chance for addicts to be treated like the people they are, in a world that does nothing but vilify and kill them. every overdose could be preventable. anything that gets in the way of that costs lives.
why is this relevant rn? because people online have a habit of taking serious terminology and diluting the meaning to prove their own point. i'm telling yall right now, you cannot be doing that. i don't even want to get into the specific case that i just witnessed, because point blank, yall cannot be using this to win arguments in fandom or shed accountability. harm reduction is DEEPLY stigmatized in many of the communities its most need in. in 2015, 25 to 40 year olds in appalachia were 70% higher in terms of fatal overdoses than those outside of appalachia. (source) overall, for a lot of social and political reasons, the stigma is worse in places it's needed more. (example)
can harm reduction be used in other contexts? yes!!! absolutely! (for example, it's also utilized by sex workers.) it should be used in other contexts, when it's appropriate and productive.
do you know when it isn't productive? when you're diluting the meaning by using it when talking about fandom shit. for real, if i ever have to see this shit again i'm going to lose my mind. please understand that the misunderstanding of what harm reduction is kills people. it is not a toy for you to play with. undermining the actual purpose of harm reduction gives politicians and opponents to harm reduction more leverage to block life-saving programs that are desperately needed and sorely underfunded.
this shit is particularly relevant rn because the pandemic has led to overdose rates skyrocketing. alright? ok.

for anon who asked "Can we get some headcanons for jabberwock members or like headcanons when they're together? (its okay if it was jason or nash only)" and made me realise it's about time i get these guys' personalities down
note before we start: cause i didn't know their names until i wrote this
zack is the bald one, allen is the one with a headband, nick is the other white guy apart from nash.
team hcs
nick gets bullied for being under 6ft, but not by jason
nah good old jason teases all of them for being short fucks, emphasising that they’re all 5ft tall in comparison to him
he 100% lifts things out of the others' reach and then laughs for ages after when they try get them
unfortunately though, they’re all used to this and now just ignore him. either that or nash stares at him so intensely jason actually repents and hands it back
zack’s another one with a very good glare, but he’s used it too often on jason and it’s since stopped working.
also jason gives me ‘straightens his back as much as possible when getting measured so he’ll measure in as 7ft’ vibes
oh and he thinks he could wrestle a gator and win. i’ve got no explanation for that except for the fact you can't tell me it's ooc.
allen’s very protective over his white headband - it’s his lucky item - but he’d never let anyone know that
he’s confident in his abilities like the rest of them, but there’s nothing wrong with wearing a headband just in case

they watch nba matches together and do not shut up once throughout the entire match - lots of jeering, booing each other if someone criticises a player they like, lots of “i could do that”, lots of “get your fucking hand out of my popcorn do you want me to punch you in the face” etc
they used to all live together, but nash has since moved out. he was sick and tired of trying to make people do chores, as the only one who kept their room clean.
yeah the others’ house looks like a heap of trash but also very much “where’s my toothbrush?” “it’s in the third coke can by the orange peel behind the sink” *silence* “yeah thanks” *a minute later* “who the fuck has been using my toothbrush”
they’re all “bro your dribbling sucks why are you on this team loser” to one another, but also very protective (aka arrogant for one another) if anyone else Dared to criticise one of their teammates
then again, what kind of person would criticise jabberwock
half of the time he spends with jabberwock, nash is a Single Mother TM trying to get a bunch of man children to behave; the other half of the time, he's just as bad as the rest of them
i talk about this a lot but i get the feeling nash is an exceptionally hard worker, but at least he gets to let his hair down around his teammates sometimes
nash is also the only person jason thought was truly ‘strong’ at first sight
and nash is also the only person who can beat jason in a fight, and also the only person who can get nash to train, and also the only person who can.. [etc. you see my point].
(n.b jason calls himself the ‘almighty me’, nash says that ‘even god can’t beat me’. point made.)
you know how jason silver’s motto is “I have never thought”
imagine him proudly stating that, before zack adds with a straight face, “yeah cause nash does it for you.”
in short, the team would fall apart without nash.
although the team’s communication and coordination is very fine tuned, nash is the guy who keeps everything in order off the court to prevent what is essentially a team of aces ('main characters', if you will) from falling apart
they hang out together a lot, but do all have other friend groups that do not overlap

unofficial rule not to criticise anchovies on pizza because the one time nick did, nash snapped
however pineapple on pizza is fair game, even though zack quite likes it
more than once, jason has brought a girl home and nick has stolen her attention away with effortless trick shots, funky ball manoeuvring etc
more than once nick has had to trek to nash’s place (with a black eye) at midnight to have somewhere to sleep
do you see a correlation?
oh and everyone in the team has been walked in on by nash when they were naked with some girl
nash has absolutely no shame
he apologises to the girl with a charming albeit insincere tone, and then remains standing in front of the bed/couch until his teammate does what he expected of them
usually it involves not having come to practice
allen learnt a few (emphasis on ‘few’) words of japanese before they travelled to japan and was disappointed that he never got to use them
that said, one of those words was hentai
and now a quick analysis of some panels

a) so there's at least one player who wasn't underestimating vorpal swords. if i were to overanalyse, i'd add that nick's wearing a hoodie (possibly athletic wear) whilst nash has a 'fancy' shirt on; perhaps nick wasn't expecting them to be going to host clubs instead of chilling/training?
b) i know what you're thinking: "how can you say nash is a hard worker when he didn't want to practice for the match". i reckon he was still pretty high on the complete and utter success of their previous match, that plus being around girls, encouraged him to have a more 'jason-y' personality. (either that or fujimaki didn't want to add too much depth/realism into nash's character bc he's unequivocally the villain, right? and obviously this helps with the plot and the jabberwock bad geniuses gom good geniuses rhetoric.)

earlier, i mentioned how nash is the only one that could keep the team together, and is thus the undeniable head of the team; here's a clear example. you can see both jason and zack have no interest in continuing - if anything, there's disgust in their faces, kinda just saying "we spat on all of japan, now we can go home". whereas nash won't allow for the slightest of possibilities that there might exist a team stronger than them, and hence agrees to the match. the key thing here is that the others do as he says without too much fuss.
another thing to note is nash's reference to harakiri. now what can we make of that, alongside his proficiency in japanese, in relation to his character? the way i see it, he's either a weeb or possibly has some japanese lineage. (you could spin that even further and say his mother was japanese, taught him the language, then abandoned him, and hence his almost excessive hatred/mockery of the japanese people.) (is that why he wanted to do another match in japan..?)

just a quick point. "thanks to him" - jason isn't so superior as to think that he could win this match effortlessly without nash's support. links pretty nicely with my earlier idea about how nash is the only person jason has always considered 100% strong.

yet another point about how nash is the strongest of the team in pretty much every way you can think of. you know how scary/powerful you have to be to shut jason up (after he's getting real pissed from being prevented from scoring?)

i personally think this is a pretty important panel, though i've never seen anyone mention it before. did nash grow up training in a professional basketball training situation, as opposed to growing up playing streetball like i suspect the others did? well, to answer that question, imma bring in another panel.

here we see visible rage on nick, zack and jason's faces - they can't accept their loss, which is fair enough. but i'd argue that nash's face seems to depict sadness more than it does anger like to rest of them, look at how downturned his mouth is - and he's looking away from the 'camera', as if hiding his shame.
when you combine that with what he says here, i have no doubt that this is someone who has experienced some proper lows in basketball - as would be expected from someone who's played 'properly'. he's possibly not even a prodigy like the rest of them - compare jason's motto with his. "i have never thought" versus "do not suppose opportunity will knock twice at your door".
there's various lines of thinking you could design with this - he might have been trained by alex (hence, himuro having heard of jabberwock, though he should have known of a team as popular of jabberwock regardless), he might have grown up with professional basketballer parents etc. but here's my own little theory:
nash received serious basketball training from early on - maybe because his parents were living vicariously through him, or maybe he always loved the sport and wanted to be no1. so there he was training away, but, as he grew older, it started getting all a bit too much.
he didn't want to dedicate his entire life to basketball. after all, his hobby is water sports and his speciality is boxing; that's a lot of different things to be keeping up with, whereas the pipeline for promising athletes demands people focus solely on basketball. as a result, nash become bitter: stopped attending practice regularly, got in trouble for trash talk of increasing severity, etc.
result was he was kicked out of the program.
only when he was no longer playing basketball again, did he realise how much he missed it. and hence he got into streetball, where he was tremendously successful as someone with so much training, 'elite skills', and the overly confident attitude to boot.
then, one fateful day, he met jason and the rest is history.

About Wendy:
Johanne Wendy Bariteau has a deep interest in and understanding of the criminal justice system, specifically the carceral system and its impacts on folks in federal prisons designated for women.
To that end she has worked for several organizations involved in supporting folks who are incarcerated and formerly incarcerated across Canada. In BC she was a board member of the West Coast Prison Legal Services and volunteered for BCCLA and is a member of the grassroots organizations Joint Effort, a women’s prisoner support group.
She also helps with Prisoner Justice Day Committee to organize public education events and Prison Justice Network. She is now the regional coordinator for Ontario and Québec at the Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry societies. She is also involved with other organizations, for example Anti Carceral Group and the Abolition Coalition. Working in multiple regions has given her an appreciation for the federal carceral system and how it plays out in regional contexts.
She has been interacting with students at various universities where she has been asked to lecture on the carceral system. For example, she lectured for the faculty of law at the University of British Columbia, for the Women’s and Gender studies department at Capilano University, and for the criminology department at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. Her education and training contribute to he understanding of the criminal justice system: in July 2020 she completed her Gladue Report Writing certificate with Indigenous Perspectives Society and Royal Roads University; in August 2019 she completed her Paralegal Diploma.

September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a new federal statutory holiday that came from one of the 94 Calls to Action by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. For the past few years, it’s also been commemorated as Orange Shirt Day.
All federal public service workers and many workers in federally regulated sectors have the day off to provide an opportunity “to recognize and commemorate the legacy of residential schools. This may present itself as a day of quiet reflection or participation in a community event.”
PSAC-NCR is organizing a delegation to attend a ceremony at Parliament Hill, followed by a Spirit Walk to Confederation Park where there will be presentations, music, art, and more. Check out the details of the event here: https://remember-me-september-30.org/
We will meet up in the parking lot of PSAC (233 Gilmour) at 8:30 a.m. and depart at 8:45 a.m. to walk together to Parliament Hill for 9:00 a.m. We will also have a limited supply of orange shirts to give out in the parking lot so arrive early for a shirt! Limited parking space will be available. There are parking lots and street parking nearby. Event organizers have asked attendees to practice social distancing. Mask-wearing is mandatory and vaccinations are recommended in order to protect the safety of Elders and residential school survivors in attendance.
Don’t forget to dress for the weather and bring a water bottle!
Let’s make sure to kick off the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation by bringing ourselves to the task and showing up, in whichever ways we can, to honour the survivors of residential schools, mourn the children who never made it home, and work towards truth and reconciliation not just this day but around the year.

Many settler Canadians have expressed shock at the findings of ground penetrating radar at the sites of former residential schools across the country, which have revealed the remains of thousands of Indigenous children kidnapped by the colonial state from their homes and families and Nations. These horrifying “discoveries” are already known to Indigenous Nations attempting for years to get justice.
Justice as defined by the Canadian and international legal systems is far from adequate. Tamara Starblanket carefully prepared her master’s thesis on this issue, which became the book Suffer the Little Children: Genocide, Indigenous Nations, and the Canadian State (Clarity Press, 2018). This powerful work turns the western legal system against itself despite the shortfalls of legal recourse that were founded in colonialism and imperialism. Yet, her work does demonstrate the Canadian state is culpable for genocide and violates international customary law. It explains in detail how the crime of genocide was conceptualized following World War 2 by the international community, how colonial countries, including Canada, sought to shield themselves against possible prosecution and sidestep the link between cultural genocide and colonialism.
Tamara Starblanket is Spider Woman, a Nehiyaw iskwew (Cree woman) from Ahtahkakoop First Nation in Treaty Six. Tamara holds an LLM (Master of Laws) from the University of Saskatchewan, and an LLB from the University of British Columbia. She is the Dean of Academics at Native Education College on the unceded lands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations or what is commonly referred to as Vancouver, BC. Starblanket is the recipient of the 2020 Nora and Ted Sterling Prize in Support of Controversy for her book Suffer the Little Children: Genocide, Indigenous Nations and the Canadian State.

On November 27, 2009, Mariano Abarca was shot and killed in front of his family restaurant in Chicomuselo, Chiapas, in southern Mexico. Abarca had been a key leader in his community’s fight against the social and environmental impacts of a Canadian company’s mining operations. All of the suspects in his murder were connected to the Calgary-based company, Blackfire Exploration. There never has been a full, impartial investigation neither in Mexico nor in Canada.
This case has been brought to Canada because documents obtained through Access to Information show that the Canadian Embassy in Mexico supported Blackfire extensively in the lead up to and following the murder of Mariano Abarca. Embassy officials, the family’s lawyers argue, are implicated in his death. In February 2018, Canadian and Mexican organizations asked the Public Sector Integrity Commissioner (PSIC) to investigate the acts and omissions of the Canadian Embassy in Mexico that they believe contributed to putting Mr. Abarca’s life in danger.
The Commissioner refused to commence an investigation in April 2018, and the matter is now before the Federal Court of Appeal. The Federal Court upheld his decision, which is now before the Federal Court of Appeal. We are currently awaiting a hearing date, which could be announced at any time. This is the family’s final recourse to seek justice in Canada.
As such, this roundtable will discuss Canadian practice when it comes to embassies abroad and conflicts over Canadian mining operations, asking whether Mariano’s case is the pattern or an exception. We will also explore what policy Canadian officials should be expected to follow in such cases, and how Canada’s human rights obligations are fulfilled. Finally, do we have any way to hold public officials to account when things go wrong as they did for Mariano? And if not, what needs to change?

Hey! I got three chunks of money to donate for Christmas and there's so many things that need support I haven't been able to pick where to donate them yet. Mostly I want to donate to indigenous communities and environmental protection, especially bc indigenous communities do so much amazing work to protect the environment that helping one can also help both. I saw your swift fox post and it filled me with rage- do you know if there's anywhere I can donate to help?
Hmm, I know that I have friends at this site who are a part of these Native communities, and they would be better people to ask for guidance on how to help and/or donate. I’m not really equipped to give a good enough answer; not really  sure I have great recommendations. But I guess I’d like to share a couple of resources about reservations in the region. (This is the post being referenced, about the Fort Belknap reservation’s reintroduction of the previously-extinct swift fox to the prairies of northern Montana.) And I hope that, maybe, others reading this can supply some recommendations on where/how to donate.

A couple of recent issues:
-- Fort Belknap Indian Community joined the Rosebud Sioux to launch a major legal case against the Keysonte XL project (run by Alberta fossil fuel company TransCanada, now known as “TC Energy”) in order to prevent the pipeline from being installed on/near their communities. In spring of 2020, after months of pursuing the case (Rosebud Sioux Tribe v. Tr*mp) the tribes achieved several victories in federal courtrooms in Montana.
-- In 2020, Fort Belknap formally declared a state of emergency partially because of increased risk of viral spread due to the influx of pipeline workers brought in by TC Energy to service pipeline construction.
-- Nearby, in June 2020, Fort Peck Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes began lawsuits against multiple agencies of the US federal government over Keystone XL pipeline, since the project’s route would threaten Fort Peck’s drinking water because the pipeline is planned to be built under both the Milk River and the Missouri River only a kilometer or so west of Fort Peck’s border. This would threaten the Assiniboine and Sioux Rural Water Supply System (which was left out of the government’s and oil company’s “arbitrary geographic scope of the [routine environmental health] assessment” of the pipeline project). Fort Peck relies on this water system because the local groundwater was poisoned, and the aquifer destroyed, by oil development during the 20th century. In 2020, activists demonstrated against construction of the pipeline which was taking place nearby at the US-Canada border. (Just this month, January 2021, one activist from Fort Peck was interviewed by BBC News regarding Keystone XL.)

Also worth pointing out that the swift fox reintroduction program at Fort Belknap in 2020 was not the first time that the community hosted reintroduction of an iconic extinct species.
-- Beginning in 2013, Fort Belknap began reintroducing the highly endangered black-footed ferret, which had previously been functionally extinct in the wild. (These programs join other Native reintroduction efforts in northern Montana. Again, outside of Canada, in 1998 the Blackfeet reservation was the first community/organization to reintroduce the swift fox to a region where it had gone extinct.)
-- In 2019, the Fort Peck reservation reintroduced bison, when 55 of the creatures were transferred from Yellowstone and moved to the prairies north of the Missouri River at Fort Peck. (US federal government has a policy of simply harassing and/or killing bison that leave Yellowstone’s arbitrarily-drawn formal park boundaries, and Fort Peck negotiates to have those wandering bison brought to the reservation.)

I also just want to take a moment to say that these reservations are not treated nicely by the state of Montana. Big surprise.
North of the Yellowstone region (and with the exception of the Spokane and Tri-Cities urban areas), within US borders, in the entire 2,600 kilometers (1,600 miles) between Seattle on the Pacific coast and Minneapolis and the shores of Lake Superior, there is no city with a population of over 190,000. So, the northern Great Plains are relatively isolated from easy access to metropolitan resources (internet, cell service, grocery stores, etc.). Within Montana borders, south of the Missouri River, the Plains landscape features badlands and hosts a lot of cattle rangeland and coal mining. But the landscape north of the Missouri River was historically covered by Late Pleistocene glaciers, so the soil is different, which attracted settlers more interested in farming, and this region hosts more cropland. This expansive cropland eliminated most native shortgrass prairie, so the agriculture has not been kind to the swift fox (or black-footed ferret, bison, pronghorn, etc.). Four of Montana’s formally-recognized 7 reservations are located in this region: the Fort Peck reservation, Fort Belknap reservation, Rocky Boy’s reservation, and the Blackfeet reservation. There is also the Little Shell Chippewa Tribe.
The Little Shell did not even receive formal recognition from Montana until 2019, and they only own about 3 acres of land.
The Blackfeet reservation struggles to gain access to infrastructure funding and has a poverty rate 3 times higher than the rest of Montana despite the fact that the reservation sits directly on the border of Glacier National Park, a major international tourist destination which attracts big-money visitors. In 2019, the Nat!onal Park Service estimated that Glacier added $484 million to the “local” economy.
