School is now less than 2 weeks away! I’ve been preparing in a few ways.

I’m almost done with “Law School Without Fear: Strategies for Success” by Helene and Marshall Shapo. I read a bit whenever I do cardio at the gym. I plan to outline Shapos’ book, McKinney’s “Reading Like a Lawyer,” and McClurg’s “1L of a Ride” (both of which I’ve already read). I also want to complete a 0L Harvard course I have access to, but I’ve avoided completing the course because I much prefer reading text to watching video. I’ll make myself do it soon, though…!

I also need to contact the disability resource center for help. I’m a little confused about assistive technology, as I’ve never had accommodations before and I have no experience with the program they gave me. I need to waive out of school health insurance, too. Bleh. I wonder if I can re enroll in school healthcare when I’m starting as a 2L I drop my coverage?

I have to do some more school shopping. I thrifted 🦋cottagecore🦋 clothes. I have so many comfy outfits now! I’m waiting for a standing desk I want to go on sale. I need to buy my textbooks still, and I hope to pick up free school supplies at community events this coming week.

If you want to support the cause from home, you can help by donating to organizations and raising awareness of the issues that ignited the protests in the first place. But if you want to be a part of the movement by taking to the streets, there are ways to minimize your chances of catching COVID-19. .

It’s impossible to be completely safe from infection. But being careful and prepared will allow you to freely exercise your First Amendment rights in the safest way possible, while also protecting your community from the novel coronavirus.

The basics: time and place

At a protest, the two most important factors you’ll be dealing with are how long you stay and whether the demonstration is in an open or closed space. It’s all about managing risk.

The longer you stay, the more likely you are to be infected if there’s someone with the disease in attendance. Closed premises—such as an auditorium or a subway platform—are worse than open-air locations, since they don’t allow proper air circulation.

If the protest you want to go to is indoors, you may want to skip it. And since there’s no particular amount of time that makes it safe to attend any large gathering (no matter where it is), plan the duration of your stay beforehand and stick to it.

Keep doing what you’re doing—and then some

No matter where you go during this pandemic, you should be taking precautions to protect yourself and others. These include wearing a mask at all times and either washing your hands when you touch something or someone, or wearing disposable surgical gloves.

At a protest, you should follow these rules even more rigorously. Without a mask, your chants for justice or inspiring speech will spray drops of saliva onto whatever’s nearby, including people’s skin and faces. Yes, this is gross, but because many COVID-19 carriers don’t know they’re infected—and you may be one of them—it also increases the likelihood of spreading the disease.

In the event you come into contact with tear gas—even a small amount—your body’s natural response will be to get rid of it by coughing and sneezing. This, in turn, will send droplets from your mouth and nose into the open air—unless you’re wearing a mask.

A face mask will filter out most tear gas particles, but even if you do inhale some, you should not take it off—make sure you move to safety first. When you’re away from the gas, uncover your face and wash it with copious amounts of water or a baking soda and water solution before you put a clean mask on. "I’d also recommend wearing goggles,” says Rohini Haar, an emergency physician and a research fellow at the Human Rights Center at the University of California, Berkeley. “That way you’ll be protecting all the mucous membranes of your face, like your eyes, mouth, and nose.”

Even glasses might help to some extent, though they’ll only protect you from particles coming straight at you. Everything coming from above or the side can easily make its way into your eyes.

You don’t actually have to be in the middle of a dense gathering to participate in a protest, though. Even in this kind of event, we should strive to keep that 6-foot distance from others as much as possible. Illinois Medical District has big plans for the future

The 560-acre Illinois Medical District (IMD) on Chicago’s Near West Side could look very different in the coming years thanks to an ambitious initiative aimed at transforming the area’s vacant land into a burgeoning mixed-use innovation district.

“We are trying to market the district in a way that embraces more urban-style development,” Ryan Gage, communications director with the Illinois Medical District, told Curbed. “If you come to the district now, some of the development is older and has a suburban office park feeling. Outlined in our master plan, we would offer a broader mix of uses and foster a physical environment that creates public gathering spaces to encourage collaboration.”

A recent promotional video previewed the IMD’s more urban future, showcasing new retail, hotel, and civic components as well as a pair of striking gold-colored towers rising near the intersection of Ogden and Polk. While the conceptual towers are little more than eye-catching placeholders at this point, the animation illustrates the area’s untapped potential.

“This is about putting a new face on the IMD,” explained Christine Carlyle, principal and director of planning of Solomon Cordwell Buenz, the Chicago-based architecture firm heading the master plan. “In the past the medical institutions have been more inward facing and islands, but new these new pedestrian spaces and redevelopment opportunities could bridge the gaps and enliven the area.”

The district is currently home to 40 healthcare institutions including the University of Illinois at Chicago Hospital, Rush University Medical Center, and Stroger Hospital and is the largest urban medical district in the country. Its leadership, however, believes there is much more to come.

“Life science in Chicago is lagging behind other cities,” Illinois Medical District CEO Suzet McKinney told ABC7 news on Saturday. “It is our goal to change that.” McKinney says her team is encouraged by new incentives such as opportunity zones implemented under the recent overhaul of federal tax laws to attract new investment.

While the IMD’s latest push to revitalize roughly 31 acres of vacant land will have a significant impact on the area, some other nearby developments are already moving forward including the retail portion of the mixed-use IMD Gateway project at Damen and Harrison.

Work is also underway to convert the historic Cook County Hospital main building into hotel rooms as the first phase of a larger residential, office, and hospitality project known as Harrison Square. Rush is planning a new $500 million outpatient care facility, and the 19-story SCIO apartment tower is slated for Ashland and Taylor.

Terahertz waves leak out of a small slit in the antenna at different angles, depending on frequency. The rec wireless communication  eiver can be tuned to select one angle, plucking a single data channel from a stream containing many channels.

Engineers from Brown University have made progress on a key component for terahertz wireless: multiplexing and de-multiplexing a terahertz stream.

Terahertz radiation could one day provide the backbone for wireless systems that can deliver data up to one hundred times faster than today’s cellular or Wi-Fi networks. But there remain many technical challenges to be solved before terahertz wireless is ready for prime time.

Researchers from Brown University have taken a major step toward addressing one of those challenges. They’ve developed what they believe to be the first system for multiplexing terahertz waves. Multiplexers are devices that enable separate streams of data to travel through a single medium. It’s the technology that makes it possible for a single cable to carry multiple TV channels or for a fiber optic line to carry thousands of phone calls at the same time.

“Any terahertz communications application is going to need some form of multiplexing and demultiplexing,” said Daniel Mittleman, professor of engineering at Brown and senior author of a paper describing the new device. “This is, to our knowledge, the first time anyone has demonstrated a viable strategy for multiplexing in the terahertz range.”

The research was published September 14 in Nature Photonics.

Today’s cellular and Wi-Fi networks rely on microwaves to carry voice conversations and data. But the increasing demands for data transfer are quickly becoming more than microwaves can handle. Terahertz waves have a much higher frequency and therefore more potential bandwidth. Scientists and engineers have only recently begun exploring the potential of terahertz waves, however. As a result, many of the components for a terahertz wireless network — including multiplexers — have not yet been developed.

The multiplexer that Mittleman and his colleagues have been working on makes use of what’s known as a leaky wave antenna. In this case, the antenna is made from two metal plates placed in parallel to form a waveguide. One of the plates has a small slit in it. As terahertz waves travel down the waveguide, some of the radiation leaks out of the slit. It turns out that terahertz waves leak out a different angles depending on their frequency.

“That means if you put in 10 different frequencies between the plates — each of them potentially carrying a unique data stream — they’ll come out at 10 different angles,” Mittleman said. “Now you’ve separated them and that’s demultiplexing.”

On the other end, a receivsmart grid sensorer could be tuned to accept radiation at a particular angle, thus receiving data from only one stream.

“We think it’s definitely a reasonable solution to meet the needs of a terahertz communication network,” said Nicholas Karl, a graduate student at Brown and the paper’s lead author. Karl led the experiments on the device with fellow graduate student Robert McKinney. Other authors on the study are Rajind Mendis, a research professor at Brown, and Yasuaki Monnai from Keio University in Tokyo.

One of the advantages to the approach, the researchers say, is that by adjusting the distance between the plates, it’s possible to adjust the spectrum bandwidth that can be allocated to each channel. That could be especially useful when such a device is deployed for use in a data network.

“For example, if one user suddenly needs a ton of bandwidth, you can take it from others on the network who don’t need as much just by changing the plate spacing at the right location,” Mittleman said.

The group plans to continue its work to refine the device. A research group from Osaka University is collaborating with Mittleman’s group to implement the device in a prototype terahertz network they’re building.

“This is a first-generation, proof-of-concept device,” Ka 4g-lte  rl said. “There are still things we can do to improve it and we’ll continue to study it.”

Mittleman hopes that the work will challenge other researchers to start developing components for terahertz networks.

“The biggest impact this may have is it may just be the kick that people need to start thinking about this issue,” Mittleman said. “That means they’ll start coming up with clever ideas that are entirely different from this one.”
