Hi, hello, sorry to bother you! If you take requests and they are currently open, could you maybe identify any DNA strings in the song The Summoning by Sleep Token? 🤓 The frontman is a massive nerd and active lurker, and I feel like he'd get a kick out of something like this. Please and thank you 🙏
String identified:

Poor Fallout 4 really went completely unremembered outside one funny video that got memed. Nothing intentionally in the game really charmed people like Fallout 3 or New Vegas did and it seems like very few people felt they could get any higher entertainment value out of it than Monster Factory did and it faded from public consciousness. And I don’t remember anything else about it standing out to me as a game either, but it sucks and makes me very sad because if only Fallout 4 had been more culturally relevant perhaps it would have been able to elevate scorpionflies from obscurity.
Imagine a world where the first video game to feature this insect actually took off enough that they became common knowledge, especially from all the people who might assume the “stingwing” is just a cool made-up monster until they learn it was just lifted 1:1 from an actual animal, THEN they learn that the real animal’s tail is not a stinger at all but the male’s genitalia. It could have gone so viral. But they blew it. They put it in a game that people were just okay about. They RUINED scorpionfly’s big chance :(

sunnycotton has got me thinking about the "asking someone out with an insect" fallenclan tradition, and so i've decided to compile a little list of what insects i think have been used in the past... there are so many cool insects i WANTED to add but i'm going to try and be at least. semi-realistic. about what types of insects these mountain cats could plausibly have found.
antbite/lionsong = asian longhorned beetle
moorthistle/littleleaf = monarch butterfly caterpillar (specifically a caterpillar because of its soft texture - neither of them killed it. moor gave it to little for him to inspect and once he realized what she meant he instantly accepted. she later returned the caterpillar to the milkweed plant it had been on)
russetflare/cinderstone = eastern-eyed click beetle (russet was SO proud of catching one, cinder was reluctantly impressed)
willowsplash/bub = boll weevil
blizzardfang/crowflame = pill bug (roly-poly)
nettlestem/scorchstar = indigo duskywing skipper butterfly
newtscar/bluefern = spotted orbweaver (BEFORE evie joined the polycule)
newtscar/bluefern/evie = silver arigiope (after learning of the tradition, evie found one of these guys for his wives)
goldenstar/morningbloom = yellow garden spider
beefreckle/jaycall = praying mantis
cloudtuft/pondshine = green lynx spider (pond was like "cool thx!" at first and then cloud had to explain the tradition)
mossfrog/rustbee = green lacewing
ashblink/sleepydawn = checkered skipper butterfly
sleepycloud/ivybounce = two-striped grasshopper
yewberry/brambletuft = common scorpionfly
flyspots/wormshade = the spongy moth (wormshade didn't know about the tradition, being the kit of an ex-kittypet, and reluctantly accepted, confused. hence why flyspots thought they were mates)
pebblefreeze/human = brown centipede (these two aren't mates, and i see them as more of a QPR situation, but i feel like pebble would've given human a brown centipede anyway. he was horrified)
-🐉(i am in no way an insect expert, esp in regards to location so these still might be wildly impossbile. that's ok tho, fallenclan can exist in a pocket dimension with all the insects)
CUTE!!!!!!!!! all around very good choices (canonizing littlemoor monarch caterpillar & blizzardcrow pill bug bc AUGHHHH <3), i love the way your mind works... also pebble giving human a centipede really makes me giggle
also a few of these do have canon bugs here!

Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
Although scorpionflies may look-- and sound-- scary, they're actually quite harmless! This group of insects is named for their stinger-like appendages that resemble a scorpion's stinger. However, these appendages are actually enlarged genetalia, and are only present on the males of each species.

THE BADASS BUG BRACKET
ROUND 1, BRACKET 14
Synagris Proserpina vs Scorpionfly (Panorpa nuptialis Gerst)
Synagris Proserpina propaganda: Is this wasp a total nobody? no common name, not even a wikipedia page, just a few images on inaturalist and the sort? yes! but tell me it doesnt look AWESOME. it looks like a LITTLE DEVIL. it literally looks like a cartoon demon to me its the devil from the bible. i dont know anything about it as a species, but i am enamored and delighted by its shapes. plus, those huge horns are unique to its genus, so its special little dude. when have you seen a wasp with horns before? NEVER I BET.
Scorpionfly propaganda: its all in the name

Do you know of any bugs (other than Boreidae) that are active in cold temperatures? I’m itching to go bug hunting but I still have more than a month of snow left. :(
Thanks for letting me know your location via IM!
There are not a ton of options for bug hunting in February in your area - most bugs will be hunkered down for winter and it's best not to disturb their cozy hiding places by flipping over logs and rocks and stuff where you'd normally find lots of bugs.
There are bugs that'll come out in winter, but many of them are not super common and it's kind of unlikely you'd find them without looking in very specific habitat. That would include snow scorpionflies as you mentioned, and also snow flies, which are a type of crane fly, plus snow fleas, gall wasps, some midges and a few others that are very very tiny.
Tbh you're much more likely to find bugs indoors this time of year, so you may want to give that a go? Stink bugs, boxelder bugs, Asian lady beetles, and lots of different spiders are all common in houses in the winter. Basements are an especially good place to try and find some critters.
Otherwise there's always keeping bugs as pets! Everyone should have an isopod or two ;)

AU Posting: Poke-Hybrids
I literally made this AU to smash my two hyper-fixations together.
If there's any Pokemon you would like to suggest in slots where I am unsure of, lmk!! Especially for characters I have no ideas for (You'll be able to tell if I have nothing for them, they have ???).
Stan - Drizzile (…I couldn't resist, man.)
Kyle - Grovyle (…I mean. Who else was I gonna pick?? This one is the ONLY one that fits Kyle in my eyes! Both Stan and Cartman are jealous that he'll be able to one day Mega Evolve, which Kyle tries to ignore.)
Cartman - Pignite (Of course he's one of the fire fighting types. I only chose the Tepig line because of obvious reasons. And because I wanted 3/4 of the main boys to be from Starter lines!)
Kenny - Mismagius (Only got fully evolved b/c he ate a dusk stone at some point. Refuses to answer where he found that dusk stone though, and why he would fucking eat it.)
Butters - Togetic (Not fully evolved yet, but wants to be! He was inspired by Kenny's story, and is often found digging in South Park, just desperately looking for a Dawn Stone.)
Craig - Elgyem (…Is making Craig an alien common in some AUs…?)
Clyde - ???
Tolkien/Token - Zweilos (How these hybrids work in this AU is that there's only a rare chance for a second head to grow. He was lucky to not have that happen. Loves Nicole and supports her decision not to be like other Salazzle's.)
Tweek - Sinistea (Is more of a Ghost Ground type, being a coffee based version from this region. Get it? Because coffee grounds? …I'll see myself out.)
Jimmy - ???
Timmy - Duosion (In this AU, some hybrids evolve earlier than others. And some have subtle appearance changes. Literally only his hair changed texture, and he gained psychic powers. He's going about strengthening his mind more so he can evolve again and achieve better mobility. He always speaks with his mind, and at this point… to his friend Jimmy it just seems like he's finding an easy way out.)
Wendy - Kirlia (I mean… I had to.)
Bebe - Steenee (Wants to evolve so she can kick ass.)
Heidi - Liligant (I couldn't resist. :3)
Red - Froslass (Got lucky with Stone Searching. Found extra Dawn Stones but refuses to share with anyone. Not even Butters.)
Nicole - Salazzle (Hates her species. Gets into fights constantly with other Salazzle hybrids because she isn't getting a harem. She refuses to. In love with Tolkien. <3)
Scott M. - Combee (As he is male, he will never evolve. But he's fine with it! Who needs to evolve when just being a hybrid as is makes you 'cool'?)
Dougie - Rotom (I had to. Don't ask me why. If you have a better Pokemon to mix Dougie with, lmk.)
Mike - Gliscor (A fake bat hybird. That is NOT a bat!! Well, kind of. He only says he's a bat until people end up pointing out the other thing his kind are based on. Which are scorpionflies.)
Pete - Houndour (Not fully evolved yet, and doesn't look forward to it. He doesn't want to look super intimidating…)
Michael - Absol (Stays away from everyone that isn't his friends, because everyone else sees him as a bad omen. I wonder why…)
Henrietta - Gothorita (At least she isn't an overly girly Pokemon like some of the other girls.)
Firkle - Rookidee (Because steel bird. That's all. …He isn't one yet, but he wants to be.)
Extras: Non-canon to the AU at the current moment, including OC's (uh… OC's will never be canon obviously). You are free to draw them though, I welcome it.
Philip - Greavard (..I was gonna make him Lillipup, but then I remembered he was dead. So I made him Greavard, as he died before he could grow in his hybrid features. Still jolly and cheerful, and literally unaware he drains energy from the living.)
Damien - Morgrem (Need I say more?)
Gregory - Doublade (Sassy hero? Yes please. May not actually be Gregory talking, but the spirit in the swords he has.)
Christophe - Excadrill (Get it because he's called the mole?? No but seriously, this Pokemon just SCREAMED Christophe.)
Pocket - Lopunny (I didn't want to make him a Diggersby or a Raboot. I also find it personally funny, and no I won't say why.)
Estella - Primarina (Her mom overfed her Rare Candies to make her as beautiful as possible early on. This has made her jaded and hate her mom in secret.)
Gary - Wooloo (Unless anyone else has any better ideas.)
Scott T. - Zoruark (If anyone has any better ideas, lmk. I personally don't like to think about Tennorman that much…)
Leslie - Iron Moth (Not of this time period. Nobody knows where she came from, if she ever even came from here to begin with.)
Terrance - Slither Wing (Not of this time period either. Was brought back to life using the DNA found in the amber from ancient times. Thought originally to be from Aerodactyl, it instead turned out to be a past version of Volcarona.)
Angela - Indeedee (The female Indeedee, not the male one.)
Ebony - Cufant (I couldn't resist. :D)
Hannah - Crobat (Actually a bat Pokemon! I was saving Crobat for her. But like I said up there, the OC's aren't canon.)
Kasumi/Camilla - Alcremie (Because I didn't want overlapping species.)
Niya - Skiddo (I mean, her last name writes itself.)
Ruby - Liepard (Don't trust her cute looks. That's how she steals stuff from people.)
Skyla - Rowlett (Because owl. I do know owls will be important to Skyla's super hero persona, that's for sure.)
Cassandra - Murkrow (Wanted to keep Skyla and Cassandra related somehow.)

btw if you think the adonis blue is cool, I'd like to recommend looking up lycaenidae (gossamer-winged butterflies) or more specifically polyommatinae (blues) since those ones tend to be bright blue. there are so many cool species including the western pygmy-blue which is one of the smallest butterflies in the world, and several species that rely on ants, either for protection as a caterpillar (such as the holly blue) or as the caterpillar's food source (such as the large blue). in fact the large blue is so reliant on one species of ant that it went extinct in the UK until conservation efforts increased the population of those ants at which point the butterfly could be reintroduced again and is considered to be "thriving" here as of 2022. some of my favourite species include the melissa blue and the friday's blue, which look very similar and have shimmery blue spots on the underside of their wings. anyway thank's for coming to my TEDtalk about polyommatinae 😅

Sir Leech of the bog. What is a currently underrepresented bug in the cheap rubber bug set world you’d like to see more often?
I've already put thought into this before and have a top ten of arthropods I think should have been common in "generic" rubber bug selections:
Solifugid ("camel spider") for its unique look and viral popularity
Jumping spiders for being so widely loved. Rubber bugs still default to basically a nondescript tarantula or wolf spider every time.
Earwigs were literally the most common insect where I grew up and in many places still absolutely everywhere
Silverfish aren't as famous as roaches but still kind of a fundamental "house pest." Plus they've been made more famous by Minecraft, and you can just cast the whole bug in shiny metallic plastic.
House centipede for being another household bug people find super freaky
Ticks because they're highly common, scary and it might be beneficial if more kids knew what they actually look like
I actually used to see a pretty common set when I was a kid that included a mole cricket and a jerusalem cricket, both excellent choices, but I'd also nominate their cousin the camel cricket which a lot of people run into and find memorably freaky.
Scorpionfly, also pretty common in some parts, and just a really distinct looking creature
Bed bug, since they're an increasingly infamous real world threat once more, and because a rubber bed bug would look real nice in simple translucent red plastic
Isopod the absolute #1. Most common, most famous bug to find almost anywhere outside, there is absolutely no excuse for an isopod to have not already been standard in every bug toy set.
I left out anything I thought was too exotic, like obviously if it were just for me I'd pick out a bunch of obscure parasites and deep sea crustaceans nobody's heard of but I feel the low-cost high-volume rubber bug toys are meant to represent creatures at least some percentage of human children have a chance to encounter in their own backyard, depending on where they live, or have at least seen on TV.

I love you summer!
I love you, bird cherry flower smell. I love you, fields full of grasses, clovers, buttercups, cranesbills, ground-ivy and flowers and plants I can't even recognise. I love you cycling, I love you, planning routes and pushing myself to go longer and faster than ever before on my bike and picking up speed with every uphill and making small side to side slithering sways with every downhill and viewing the everychanging scenery around me. I love you, shady shades of green in the forest. I love you, ice cold soft drinks. I love you, walking or cycling around the neighbourhoods and viewing people's pretty gardens and houses. I love you, walking outside and closing my eyes and letting the cool drops of rain fall on my hear and face. I love you, sundried warm blankets. I love you, doodling in a notebook on a park bench. I love you, t-shirts and summer dresses and shorts. I love you, standing on the bridge and looking down to see the fish under the surface. I love you, watching tiny brown baby mallards and spotted yellow baby gulls growing through the summer months. I love you, common swift trills. I love you, wading through the cool water in my water shoes and seeing the juvenile fish swim around me. I love you, making that first dive into the water, being engulfed by the quiet. I love you, chasing perches and roaches and looking for old mussels and their trails. I love you, diving right to the bottom to see how the colour and light shift ever so subtly at the different depths. I love you, raspberry ice pops. I love you, hot surface water and the steep cold wall of the thermocline. I love you, green and yellow fields of wheat and oat and barley that sway in the wind like waves. I love you, sparkling surface of the sea that nearly blinds you. I love you, patches of fireweed and the buzzing pollinators flying from flower to flower around it. I love you, shield bugs and scorpionflies and large pine weevils and summer chafers and rose chafers and ringlets and European peacocks! I love you, small tortoiseshell caterpillars in the nettle and bird-cherry ermine caterpillars in the bird cherry. I love you, ice cream sandwhiches. I love you, warm sunny days on the porch with a book. I love you, roaring thunder and lightning, and heavy rain and hailstorms that make the roof rumble. I love you, cooler windy days when a hoodie is just the right amount of clothing. I love you, sitting outside, watching the mountainous white clouds drift in the distance and the fieldfares doing their thing, listening to the alder and birch leaves rustling in the wind. And for a moment, there's not a worry in the whole world.
Now, obviously September and October are not summer months, despite the unusually warm September we had (thank climate change for that). I was merely dreading if I would not have enough to say, if I could put into words the things I experience in the summer. Clearly, that ended up not being an issue. I love you summer!
I love you winter!
I love you, first snowfall of the season. I love you, powdery snow and frozen grass in the mornings. I love you, pink and purple sunsets. I love you, heavy snowfall. I love you, waking up in the morning to find a thick blanket of untouched white snow. I love you, skiing trips through the woods. I love you, hot berry juice. I love you, making running steps through the untouched snow to see how far you can leap. I love you, frost and snow in the tree branches making everything look glistening and perfect. I love you, grey cloudy days when everything looks monochrome except for the red trunks of the pines. I love you, downhill skiing. I love you, trying out new routes and tricks while downhill skiing and getting out of my comfort zone! I love you, hot chocolate and whipped cream. I love you, great tits and magpies flying about looking for food. I love you, clear days when the sky is blue and you remember how beautiful it really is. I love you, heavy snowfall illuminated by the street lamps at night. I love you, walking on the sea ice and lake ice and accessing places I never could before. I love you, glögi. I love you, snowflakes and inspecting your patterns. I love you, steaming hot saunas. I love you, ice swimming, even though you also frighten me! I love you, fairy lights in the trees. I love you, wind-carved waves and shapes in the snow. I love you, blue hour. I love you, warm blankets. I love you, tiny black streams still staying unfrozen and moving. I love you, icicles and other beautiful ice formations. I love you, crown snow-load and thick snow covering the trees. I love you, northern lights. I love you, fireplaces. I love you, waking up in the middle of the night in your warm bed, finding the house completely quiet as you walk through the hall, and upon looking out the window, all you can see is the calm snow slowly making its way to the ground, illuminated by the colourful fairy lights and the orange street lights. And you get this magical feeling inside of you, that you’re so warm, and calm, and perfectly safe and sound in this very moment. And you feel like you could stand there forever and just… take it all in.
I love you winter!
#only one more season :)#since this was so... “late” think of this as like a final remembrance of summer. a joyful goodbye as we're in the heart of autumn now!#sometimes its nice to look back on previous seasons. not because i miss them but because its nice that theres so many things to enjoy#and theyll come back soon enough! the cyclical nature of the planet kind of makes it that way#not fish#long post

Common Scorpionfly (Panorpa communis) - Cullompton Leat Fields, Devon - 18 May 2018 by Dis da fi we Panorpa communis can reach a body length of about 30 millimetres (1.2 in). The common scorpionfly has a black and yellow body, with a reddish head and tail. The male has a pair of claspers at the end of its tail (for holding the female during mating), giving it a scorpion-like appearance, although it is not a stinger. The adult is seen between May and September. [5] They eat dead insects (although they sometimes eat live aphids), sometimes taking them from spider webs[5] and plant sap.[8] Although fully winged, the adults rarely fly very far and spend much of their time crawling on vegetation in damp, shaded places near water and along hedgerows. Panorpa communis is an univoltine species. Eggs are laid in soil annually and the larvae both scavenge and pupate there. https://flic.kr/p/26oTWmw
