Of all the weird commensense that gets passed around as self-evident on tumblr, the bone-deep conviction that corporations spend tens or hundreds of millions of dollars on media franchises and then consciously decide to make them bad on purpose so people hatewatch them really has to be one of the strangest.
Like, The Big Bang Theory ran for 12 seasons and won 7 Emmies. If you're engaging in media discourse on tumblr, consider that you might just not be that vital an audience.

man I am thinking about it but Zephrah is but one of the Ashari homelands, thus Keyleth is the heiress apparent of the air ashari people, the princess, and she was chosen which is cool according to the wiki even if Vilya was her mother she still had to be chosen to go on the aramente, which I wonder if she failed would her nobility pass on to the next person? Does her princesshood come from her mother or her position as tempest-incumbent? I would imagine the second one And I wonder how this stacks up legitimacy wise to the rest of Tal'dorei and Exandria proper cuz Syldor only seems super impressed by Percy even tho Syldor sucks and is a shit metric so nvm but inside her domain, her small but significant section of people, she is a la Germany during the 1700-1800s, a princess amongst the 3 other leaders of the Ashari, now it seems the Ashari governmental system is at least a little less centralized than say Tal'dorei but it still technically has Kiki as their princess now I'm making a point with this so bear with me,
And Percy, in much the same position, is, or was the second he stepped back into Whitestone, and especially showcased in TLOVM, the Big Man on Campus, the top authority, in fact he says in EP 64 to Syldor that he is of the Royal House of Whitestone, before his lil responsibility shirking ass defected to Cassandra he was the boss here, and if Whitestone is a Royal House and yet outside of Uriel's jurisdiction and his line of succession too, and Whitestone has had a Duke and a Count within it's borders as well and Percy being able to title people higher than he is, or being lower ranked than the people of those houses when they are not the main and royal House of Whitestone, is just silly and commensensically incorrect so he's higher here than duke, count, and baron, that's like principality status, one rung below Uriel's deal, a little Monaco in the Europe that is Tal'dorei. so he's a Prince, was probably the Grand Prince in the wee moments before he gave it to Cass, he's a Prince which is so cool, prince of a similarly insular people to Shepard, just like Keyleth
Keyleth is a little more involved in, to borrow from kerrick's letter, the 'gardening' of Zephrah post campaign but still she and Percy are on a very level field here which thrills the Me because it's two stressed out, very lonely and burdened babies, too young for this shit, with surprisingly good leadership skills and without either of the parents that knew how to do all this ruling stuff trying their very best to get through it all intact, Percy might took a hard left into evil demon territory for a second, but no wonder honestly that those two latched onto each other so hard, they had one other person who knew intimately the pressure the other was under, and I mean it goes even deeper truly,
They would have only began preparing Keyleth for her aramente when it became clear Vilya failed hers, years after she left, and Percy might not have been Julius or Vesper but after the massacre in the back of his mind he had to have known that when he went back he'd be in Charge for however long it took him to kill himself revenging his family, so by the time the two of them met they really were side by side with the wide gulf of Responsibility they Weren't Ready For in front of them, which makes it cuter to me that this was how Percy attempted to bond with Kiki at first prestream but like
Man, my little Royal Duo, kicking ass and taking names, Percy mighta broken the mold a little with this council but y'know I think if it were really a big deal despite Keyleth taking BH to him directly they would have had to talk to Cass and the rest of the Council first upon meeting them all so 😌 council served it's narrative purpose now my lord and lady can rule as they please, or at least Vex can which I will take to the Bank, I mean Lady De Rolo Coinmistress of Tal'dorei and her trophy husband? Absolutely (also this makes vex a princess by marriage and also it'll make Vax a PRINCE by marriage when they get him back (cuz they're gonna I choose to believe, it's what Vex deserves damnit, I refuse to be pulled from this fantasy) and he'll hate that it'll be so cute and funny)
But man this friendship, forged under the stoop of backs bowed by such responsibility set on them both far far far too young but bearing it flawlessly anyway, really is so... Percy's going to freak the fuck out when he finds out what Otohan did to her, it's gonna be so good
Their friendship man, it is so important to me. They see each other, they understand, through thick and thin and they are both broken and and a little fucked up but they still stick by each other, Keyleth rails at Percy whenever his bloodlust during the Briarwood arc gets outta control, and Percy's always there to shore Keyleth up when her charisma falls a little flat, it's a friendship built on being seen so deeply and understood in a way that only they can, even if it still isn't quite enough to mend their worse habits, even if it isn't enough to convince Percy to forgive himself then and it isn't enough for Keyleth to acknowledge that the past did happen and was horrible but the bright future is still being written. And they mirror each other sometimes, look at Percy during the Briarwood Arc vs Keyleth and Raishan, look at Keyleth seeing how poorly revenge treats Percy and yet committing to it anyway, they are so similar in so many ways. But it is enough, to be seen by each other.

"Given all that, there would have been no downside to the Dems passing an IRA that subjected the drug companies the same modest, commensense, market-based discipline we see in Canada, or the UK, or France, or Germany, or Switzerland."
This is really the story of the Democrats since 2000. They introduce these "compromise" measures that are supposed to get everybody on board and then their enemies all get enraged and puffed up and refuse to cooperate.
This seems to have no obvious benefits; it makes the Democrats look bad to their constituents and also doesn't get any cooperation.
Capitalists hate capitalism
Tumblr media
As the Marxist agitator Adam Smith once said, “People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public, or in some contrivance to raise prices.”
Smith understood that capitalists hate capitalism. They don’t want to compete with one another, because that would interfere with their ability to raise the prices their customers pay and reduce the wages they pay their workers. Thus Peter Thiel’s anticapitalist rallying cry, “competition is for losers,” or Warren Buffett’s extreme horniness for businesses with “wide, sustainable moats.”
These anti-capitalist capitalists love big government. They love no-bid military contracts, they love ACA subsidies for health insurance companies, they love Farm Bill cash for Cargill and Monsanto. What they don’t love is markets.

If you get pissy and ignore her when she tells you she’s stressed and in a bad mood, Then why should she be there for you latter on when you are in the same mood she was in? , Even friendship doesn’t go one way.

Semi-Coherent Thoughts on Caste
Tumblr media
(since I forgot to finish the draft I had on finishing this, might as well make it a full review)
It’s an interesting book, in that it’s a well put together argument for the contemporary liberal commensense on racism in the published and edited book form. If nothing else, it saves me the embarrassment of drawing a line between ‘article worth referencing’ and ‘some guy’s hot take’ when it comes to defining that.
The book’s central thesis - that the American racial hierarchy is best understood as a caste system with white at the top, black at the bottom, and everyone else awkwardly shuffled somewhere into the middle as convenient - is, like I said, basically the consensus position in liberal circles at the moment, if not quite in those terms. Wilkerson actually follows through on that and spends a decent chunk of the book detailing and comparing it to two other caste systems - mostly the Indian example, though with occasional digressions on Nazi race laws and antisemitism. (I’m honestly a bit curious why she didn’t use the racial system in, like, Mexico or Brazil since they seem like fairly obvious comparisons. But it’s pretty clear from the book that it’s the Indian caste system that caught her imagination. Well, and on a persuasive level it’s probably useful for the main comparison to not be based around white people)
Wilkerson hits all the requisite basic points - ‘white’ and ‘black’ as identities were invented in the New World to justify the slave trade and prevent the lower order of European indentured servants from allying with African slaves on class lines; slavery was an engine of atrocities, a major source of wealth for white Americans, and societally brutalizing, basically training white society that black people’s suffering was utterly unimportant; the Redeemed South post-civil war was run by exactly the same people as the old slave system was very nearly as oppressive and enforced with exemplary brutality (with plenty of blood curdling anecdotes of lynchings to make the point); race was and is a totally incoherent concept and outside of the central places for NW Europeans and Sub-Saharan Africans who counted as white and where other people slotted in the hierarchy was, if not totally arbitrary, then entirely down to the politics of the moment; processes like redlining and exclusion from the GI bill prevented black families from building wealth or entering the middle class the way others were able to during the 20th century - like,  if you’ve been even slightly keeping up with The Discourse, nothing particularly new, though nicely written and well put together with footnotes.
(Though I mean, discussing it in terms of ritual pollution makes the way white communities literally paved over public pools and abolished public school districts rather than integrate them marginally more comprehensible.)
When the book gets to the modern day, it gets much less interested in describing the caste system or what it’s like living under it in general than in the experiences of black people who gain access to areas or positions still viewed as white-by-default. Which is to say, there’s a casual mention here or there about the wealth disparity, but in terms of focus it’s overwhelmingly about successful, wealthy or credentialed black people, since America’s generally traded explicit racial segregation for segregating by class instead. Which I mean, does make sense, both in that ‘being poor is shit’ provides significantly fewer news stories of particular outrages to draw upon and because that’s very much the group Wilkerson’s in and she uses her own experiences as illustrative examples throughout the book. And, as far as being a persuasive work goes and given the really obvious intended audience of ‘white democrat who voted for Biden and really hated Trump but hasn’t paid much attention to the whole racial reckoning that’s theoretically happening”, someone whose Just Like You getting mistreated entirely and obviously because they’re black is probably more convincing than trying to explain the cycle of poverty or War on Drugs and how it ties into mass incarceration (which got bizarrely little attention). Still, like, it gets noticeable after a while.
This isn’t helped by a deeply uncomfortable chapter analogizing human society to the pack structures of dogs. Like, it’s certainly not the only thing the book’s about, but there’s very much a view floating through it that humanity does have an inherent hierarchy of talent, and that one of the greatest injustices of racism is that it deprives humanity as a whole of the genius and leadership of the ‘natural alphas’ (her words) with the bad luck to be born outside the upper caste, and forces people temperamentally unsuited to the command and rule into the role just because they were born to the right parents/with the right genitals/skin tone/etc. Which is all very r/neoliberal, but sure, except it does make the general lack of concern for nature’s cashiers and ditch diggers a bit disquieting.
Also I know ‘solutions’ chapters in books like this are inevitably slapped together at the last minute, but I’m mildly shocked by how, well, milquetoast the book’s proposed answers are. Like, the book goes from an anecdote of the author panicking after Trump got elected that we’re heading into a new 1880s to a heartwarming anecdote about how she was able to bond with a MAGA-hat wearing plumber over both missing their dead moms and make him treat her like a real human being through that. And then the explicit proposed solutions are ‘do a Truth and Reconciliation Commission” and “bond with black people over hobbies or shared experiences or something and treat them as individuals”. Which, sure, good advice, but also feels pretty woefully inadequate given the previous 400 pages.
But yeah, interesting enough read. And now I really need to find a good book or three on Indian history.

my parents are honestly so ridiculous LMAO, i just have to laugh at them sometimes otherwise I'd go insane from stress!
so yesterday my mum decided "lets just take the fall and get netflix i guess" and apparently didnt tell my dad?? so he came home from work and my sister was watching shrek the musical (cursed), and was like "...okay?? wtf???"
and now he's trying to set it up properly (I'm assuming he's trying to figure out how to put a bunch of parental locks in place bc my parents are terrors and don't trust us to use our own commensense even tho their youngest child is 16 now and their two eldest are moved out and i am 18)
but he's getting so ANGRY and FRUSTRATED abt it, and im like?? just calm down maybe??? he's sulking on the couch now in front of the TV fiddling with netflix and googling (he's terrible at using google) stuff. i think he's upset w my mother that she went and got netflix without telling him properly or having him there, but of course he won't say anything like that to her bc my mother is a unholy terror and the supreme leader in this household, so he'll just grumble and sulk instead.
but I just can't NOT laugh bc how dumb?? is it?? to get so angry abt Netflix??? just calm down and you'll think clearly and also maybe stop putting insanely strict parental locks on literally everything??? you've already instilled a traumatizing terror in talking about sex and drugs and anything u disagree with in us so why would we use the family netflix account to watch anything rated above PG-13 lmao???
