Long before Tiger Woods offended Black America by refusing to label himself as just a Black man, Mariah Carey was the original Cablinasion, acknowledging that the sums of her parts be acknowledged equally. (All together now, her mother: Irish, her father: Black and Venezuelan.)
For White America, it was simple. She was Not White. She could have been half-Sicilian and a quarter-Martian, she was still thrown in the same pot: Not White. Black people, for the most part, sucked their teeth and rolled their eyes. Her father was Black and Venezuelan? How come she couldn't be just black? Mariah's decision - and ability - to acknowledge more than just two races became a distracting issue.
"It was a problem because of the way I look," says Mariah, running a hand up her bare arm. Her skin is much lighter than the average Italian. "We're such a visual society. As soon as we look at someone, we have to put them in a box." (Indeed, the caramel complexions of famous biracial figures like Halle Berry, politician Barack Obama, Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix and Lenny Kravitz make them black, period.)
In his review of her debut album in Playboy, noted Black music critic Nelson George alluded that Mariah was a white girl who sang like a black girl. When Mariah read it, she was furious. But she was politely encouraged by her label to let it go. What would be so bad if people thought she was say, Italian?
"It's not like they overtly said it," says Mariah. She stops herself and rolls her eyes. "I mean, they did," she tosses off under her breath. "But I could not control my response to him because I felt very offended. I understand people being put off by me. But I'm only going to take so many shots."
At a luncheon with Black music journalists, 20-year-old Carey confronted George. "I told him I didn't appreciate what he wrote. And that was at the very beginning of my career. There's never been a time when I didn't spell out exactly what I am. But for some people, I was still just a white girl. To others, I was a Black girl who was just passing." Years later, Mariah went toe-to-toe with a stand-up comedienne who used the n-word when referring to Mariah and mocking her friendship with rap artists.
"This is a woman that belongs to two groups that I do not belong to," says Mariah, her voice rising. "If I'd ever said anything about those two groups, people would be picketing in the streets. And you know what? If I was two shades darker, there'd have been people protesting for me." Instead, Mariah called the NAACP herself to complain. She says that the commedienne's one-woman-show was taken off the air as a result.
"It's easy to take shots at me," she says, shrugging her shoulders. "No one feels like they need to protect me."
It's a strange position to be in. All of her life, Mariah admits to being desperate to fit in. And yet, for better or for worse, she's consistently rallied against anyone who attempted to create any kind of box for her - literally or figuratively. Even if it was the head of her record label, her husband, or both.

How to fall in love via Deneuve Magazine Personal Ads Circa 1993
❖ Go to your mailbox and see that your latest issue of Deneuve magazine has been delivered. It’s in a plain brown envelope, but you still take it all the way inside the house before you open it.
❖ Take a moment to gaze at the cover and appreciate the fact that it’s named after Catherine Deneuve in honor of her sex scene from The Hunger which awakened us all.
❖ Flip past the first few pages of ads. Do I want to fax away for a brochure about the chance to go on a Kenyan photo safari with the world’s first out lesbian commedienne? What about the Olivia Thanksgiving cruise?
❖ Enjoy the Editor’s Column about how our new President Clinton has pledged to make real progress for the LGBT community. Bask in the warm glow of happiness knowing that the gay dark ages are finally coming to a close.
❖ Chuckle at Alison Bechdel’s ad for the Feminist Bookstore Network and wish you had one of those stores near you.
❖ Keep up with the state of the lesbian nation via the letters to the editor. Aren’t the repressive laws being passed in Oregon and Colorado shocking? Goddess bless that Kentucky baby dyke having to dodge the KKK at her high school 🙁
❖ Read the wedding announcements and get all choked up, remembering why you’re here. Resist the urge to flip to the end and see if there’s anyone new from last month. Hope springs eternal!
❖ Oh, the 20th anniversary of Naiad Press! I love their stuff! Especially how all the covers look like they’re printed with ink that was on sale. I wonder if they have any more copies of that Lesbian Queries book from 1990???
❖ Audre Lorde sure is gonna give them hell at the march on Washington, eh?
❖ So many bookstores. So many books.
❖ An article about Safe Sex! Hell yes! Even though lesbians don’t get AIDS because we’re God’s chosen people, this will be fun to read about in theory! “After all, aren’t we told that lesbians and priests are in the lowest risk category?” lol people thought priests weren’t constantly having gay sex. Simpler times.
❖ An interview with Alison Bechdel! She’s so swoony.
❖ Articles about soap operas, speculation about Hilary Clinton, gossip about Madonna and Sandra Bernhard. And what about Whoopi Goldberg? And that Ellen lady? She’s been on Arsenio Hall acting all cagy about the men in her life. A list of women we wish were gay, including Joan Jett? Didn’t she sing Crimson and Clover without changing pronouns like waaaaay back in the 80s
❖ Music reviews: Sweet Honey in the Rock and Alix Dobkin! We’re almost to the ads…
❖ Labrys jewelry, freedom rings. C’mon, let’s get to the good stuff!
❖ Here we go! Classified ads– 30 words for $20! Queer personal finance, we buy used computers, a lesbian resort in New Hampshire.
❖ Personals at last! Is my woman here?
❖ Hey there’s that woman who has an ad every month expressing her ‘complete and sincere respect for’ women in military, fire, police, private security, corrections’. A gay male ad would say ‘Uniform fetish’ but apparently we’re too delicate.
❖ Bisexual boston babe ‘femalely handsome’ looking for someone who’s ‘nice to look at, not a feminist and not a bitch’. Next!
❖ Lonesome in Wyoming, Bisexual Bodybuilder, Softball is over, time to find someone warm for winter, Reubenesque Arkansas Buddhist…
❖ Find a girl who sounds promising– seems interesting and is not too far away. Spend a day or so composing a letter with a pen and piece of paper introducing yourself. If you don’t have a photo of yourself that you like, have a friend take one. Then finish the roll of film and bring it to the Fotomat and wait a day or so and then pick up the prints and hope you like one of them. Choose one anyway, and put it in the envelope with your letter.
❖ Get a stamp, hang it on the mailbox, never hear anything ever again.
❖ One month later, go to your mailbox and see that your copy of Deneuve has arrived.

BOOK | The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo by Amy Schumer Looking back, it seems very strange that I asked for Amy Schumer’s debut memoir for Christmas back in 2016 (and it also seems to be a running theme for me, oyyy). But I suppose I had the same idea back then as I do now, when I decided to finally read it: dear book, change my mind about Amy Schumer. And surprisingly enough, it kinda did.
Tumblr media
This book was good. Like, dare I say I would keep this book on my shelves (my rating system is basically keep it vs. sell/donate it, and this one is surprisingly a “keep it”). While Amy does at times go too far and/or make some offensive comments, they were few and far enough in between for me to still enjoy the book overall. They weren’t overpowering like some people can be. And with those offensive comments, she is definitely aware of what she says and often immediately rebuts the jokes to readers before they cause an uproar about them (I’m sure if I dug deep enough into the interwebs, people probably did call her out on it anyways, but still, she was aware). I wouldn’t say I was supporting the things she said, but knowing what I know about her comedic style (read: she literally makes her living on being vulgar), I let it be and kept reading.
That’s not to say that the things she did/does/will do didn’t bother me at all. As a writer and a reader, sometimes it can hard to be on both sides of the conversation. Like it’s hard for me to say that I was very much entertained by her book, knowing full well that she’s also done/said/been many things I don’t agree with. Which might be why it took me a good long while after reading her book to properly write about it (I finished it about two weeks ago). To be quite frank: I really liked her writing style, I loved how candid she was, I loved how empowering she seems to be, and also honestly how relatable she was throughout the book. But then I see things like this article shared by a Goodreads reviewer, who actually took down her review because she didn’t want to promote Schumer anymore and I get it that stance too. Because I don’t condone her supposedly doing or being those things either (joke stealer, racist, etc). So I’ve narrowed it down to this... Basically, I think I feel about Amy Schumer the way I feel about Lena Dunham (it makes sense, since they’re close friends) – I don’t outright hate her, but get a slight uneasy feeling, or some other feeling I can’t quite pinpoint exactly, whenever she’s mentioned or involved in something. I honestly took the dust cover off TGWTLBT so I didn’t have to constantly look at Amy’s face and get that feeling. Coincidentally, I think that also made me disassociate her from the book enough to enjoy it. It’s weird, I know, but I think that was a thing.
Despite all that mumbo jumbo, reading her memoir has actually given me – believe it or not – a greater appreciation for Amy Schumer. She may be crude and uncouth (wait, did I just quote Titanic?) but I discovered she is is so much more than her stage presence. She is Amy, an abuse survivor; she is Amy, the sexual assault survivor; she’s Amy, the advocate against gun violence; she is Amy, whose father was an alcoholic and has multiple sclerosis; she is Amy, her sister Kim’s best friend; she is Amy, of a broken family; she is Amy, the feminist. I’m not saying that a celebrity has to have lived through such hardships for me to consider them human like the rest of us, but my god, if they don’t help put things in perspective, help put you in her mindset. She is not perfect – like constantly referring to herself as “Long Island Trash” and always calling her facial features “pug-like,” both so sad to me when I read them – but she is fiercely dedicated to all that is most important to her. Including her craft as a comedian. And, not gonna lie, I learned far more about Amy’s sex life than I ever thought I needed to know too because she’s such an open book.
So to answer that question, of whether I would watch her show (or honestly any of her shows)? Maybe. I have a feeling I might just like her on paper, more than on screen. But I guess we’ll just have to find out, won’t we?
