thinking about how gideon understands wake's conversation with john so she must have been speaking her oppressor's language to her oppressor. thinking about how wake's full name is italicised, a literary convention indicative of foreign words. thinking about whether wake even knows the meaning of her name at all or if it is just about keeping it alive at this point. thinking about if she knows any of the destroyed languages of the planet that her ancestors escaped ten thousand years ago before they were erased entirely. thinking about wake and how two thirds of her name is derived from anglo/western culture just so the devastating impact on indigenous people of the erasure of their traditional knowledge and culture could be contextualised in a way muir's (predominantly) white, anglo/western audience could understand. thinking about wake and how she was angry enough at the imperial systems of power she spent her whole life fighting against to exist as a ghost for twenty years after the fact of her death. thinking about how all augustine offers her efforts twenty years after the fact of her death is belittlement of her people and a toast. thinking about [a giant shephard's crook emerges from the wings and yanks me sidestage]

Wanna hear something that just occurred to me?

I haven't actually read the unwanted guest yet (gotta get on that), but I've seen lots of people discussing the whole "permeability of souls" thing, and one post in particular about how maybe Alecto dislikes gingers bc John's spent the last couple decades hating Wake. So I had this thought: Gideon has hated Harrow as long as she can remember, and only starts warming up to her when they go to the First House. This also happens to be when she is forced to largely stop using her two-hander and regularly spend large amounts of time away from it—the sword which we now know was being haunted by her mother's vengeful spirit. Could that be a coincidence? Absolutely. But, I think it's interesting to consider the possibility that Gideon's perception of Harrow over the years has been colored by her mother's hatred of necromancers.

Anyway now I want to reread the first book and see if this holds any water whatsoever lol

Her hands come away sticky. Red. Simply by giving her son life she has already killed him. He is doomed from the beginning. Her love will not save him from suffering. Because the thing cradled in her arms is not a baby, it is a sacrifice: born amongst the other bleating animals whose blood will one day be spilled in the name of what demands it. the night is silent with anticipation. has anyone in this fandom ever acknowledged the fact that harrow believes with 1000000% certainty that she was able to unlock the tomb because she's a Super Special Magical Girl (she is, not the point) and has no idea that it's only because she had gideon's blood/skin under her nails when she opened it

like what the fuck is learning this going to do to her chopped up little brain. it's going to destroy her. it's going to completely ruin her sense of self. the only reason she kept LIVING was because she was able to open the tomb and look upon the girl inside it. and to learn that it's NOT because she's The Necromancer Divine, that it's actually her life-long feud with gideon that allowed it to happen? that gideon is the biological child of the Emperor Undying? never mind all the other information we learn at the end of HtN while harrow is fighting gideon's bio mother in the river (she also doesn't even know that wake gave birth to gideon lol)

anyway I think harrow is going to feel very normal about all of this (she's absolutely not)

Actually fucking crazy how Pyrrha had to feel her partner of over 10,000 years die, wake up alone in his body, square her shoulders and pretend to be him (not even for the last time), and then find the current most important person in the world to her, a woman who she'd only recently learned had not been killed in a way that mattered, and shoot her in the head.
