A Very Bad Day For Biden - 02/09/2024

Trump won the Nevada primary caucus over Ryan Binkley (I never heard of him) by getting 99.1%. As I mentioned a couple of days ago, Nikki Haley was on the primary ballot on the 6th, three days ago, Trump wasn't, and she lost to "None of these candidates." So, the caucus is a separate election in Nevada this year. I know it's confusing, two primary elections a few days apart in the same state. I don't understand it myself, but that's the way they set it up. Of course, that's not why Biden had a bad day. It's a Republican primary that doesn't really affect Joe Biden, and besides that Trump was expected to win that one by over 90%.

Biden had a very bad day yesterday because of the report that came out by special counsel Robert Hur. Here's the part of that report which hurt him: "At trial, Mr. Biden would likely present himself to a jury, as he did during our interview of him, as a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory." Biden "did not remember when he was vice president, forgetting on the first day of the interview when his term ended ('if it was 2013 -- when did I stop being Vice President?'), and forgetting on the second day of the interview when his term began ('in 2009, am I still Vice President?'). He did not remember, even within several years, when his son Beau died." In spite of the overwhelming evidence of Biden's mishandling of classified materials that Bur had detailed in his report, it was never expected that he would be indicted for two reasons. One, you can't indict a sitting president. And two, the two-tiered system of justice this administration has corrupted into their institutions such as the DOJ and the FBI, whereby if you're on the conservative republican side of the aisle, you're toast; if you're on the left, you get a pass. Politically speaking, I don't think Biden can recover from this. I mean if he's not competent to stand trial, then he's not competent to be the most powerful person in the world, the commander and chief with nuclear codes; that is of course, POTUS (the President of the United States). Before this, I wasn't quite sure if Biden would drop out of the race, but now it seems impossible for him to make it to the finish line.

Ok but this is actually really fucking funny.

The thousands of National Guardsmen President Trump sent to Los Angeles in an authoritarian power play are working for free. More than a dozen guardsmen told Military.com that they remain unpaid, as they have yet to receive official activation orders. Receiving such orders would allow them to receive pay, Tricare health benefits, and Department of Veterans Affairs eligibility. Without them, the troops dispatched aren’t getting anything. Trump’s abrupt deployment of the guardsmen, against the wishes of Los Angeles’s mayor and California’s governor, circumvented executive norms and has resulted in thousands of soldiers who aren’t sure if they’ll be compensated for the work they’re doing. Guardsmen have also complained about their living conditions, as many of them are sleeping on cots at a Naval Base on the edge of Los Angeles. Forcing people to work for no pay is very on brand for the president. (Source: The New Republic)

Basically, because Trump cut a lot of corners in mobilizing the California National Guard against the wishes of, yanno, the government of California and because LA hasn't actually become some lawless warzone like the far-right media keeps saying...there isn't actually a lot for the National Guard to do (besides stand around and protect ICE agents).

Unlike the Marines Trump also sent to Los Angeles, the National Guard aren't full-time soldiers. They train part time but otherwise have normal day jobs that they depend on to make ends meet. So because Trump and Hegseth have completely fucked the process, the majority of them sitting around in pretty uncomfortable conditions (thank you, Third Amendment) and aren't getting compensated for it.

As this is a president with a long track record of stiffing the communities where he does his rallies with huge bills and didn't paying his contractors during his days as a real estate developer...it is hilariously on-brand.
