Thru Hiker Eddie and Trail Angel Steve
When he was a kid, Eddie used to go on little day hikes with Wayne- it got him out of that awful house, and Wayne always taught him something new about how to get by out on the trail. As he grew older, the hikes got longer, until Wayne was taking him on 2, 3 day backpacking trips. When Eddie finally moved in with him, hair shorn and scarred in ways people couldn’t always see, Wayne took him out for a full week. It took over half of it for Eddie to start acting like himself again.
After that, hiking was their thing. It was what they did anytime they got into a disagreement, any time that Hopper brought him home by the scruff of the neck with threats about this being the last time he’d get off with only a warning- they took to the woods and walked until something in both of them settled.
So when Wayne died, too young but entirely content with his life, Eddie knew what he had to do. He was going to fucking Cheryl-Strayed his grief and hike the PCT from border to border. Wayne had talked about wanting to do it a million times, but he could never afford the months that he’d have to take off to do it. But Eddie was making decent money as a musician and the only real plus side of this whole situation is that he could convince his manager that between the grief and the stark beauty of the Sierra Nevadas, he’d come out of this with two or three albums worth of material.
Becoming a Trail Angel had honestly been an accident, for Steve. Robin had accidentally found herself engulfed in a group of backpackers on a day hike out at Walkers Pass and had endeared herself to them immediately. So when Steve showed up to the parking lot to give her a ride back to town, he was met with a group of ten or so chatting up a storm with his best friend. He agreed to take them all back to town, as long as they were patient enough for him to make trips- he could only squeeze five in at a time, with their packs. It was on his third trip that he realized no one in the car knew Robin, and that they’d just assumed he was a Trail Angel. After they explained what that actually was, he found he liked the idea- it was a decent drive over the pass, and the people were great. So the next day, when he noticed a group of hikers that he had brought down the day before sitting at a bus stop, he pulled over and asked if they wanted a ride back up.
The way it escalated after that, well. Yes, technically it was completely under Steve’s control, but he’s never really been able to help the way he just wants to, well, help people. He’s off for the summer, but the time people start showing up at the pass, so it’s pretty easy for him to go up to the trailhead and perform a little trail magic- in the summer months his trunk is always full of snacks and water and half full trash bags, and he’s always willing to load a few strangers into his car for a ride back to town. Once the crowd thins out, though, that first summer, it leaves him feeling a little hollow. See, Steve’s not a big hiker. Sure, he’s fit enough that he could probably pull off at least being a section hiker, but hiking leaves him too alone with his thoughts for his taste, so taking on the PCT doesn’t really feel realistic. But the way the hikers talk about it? The magic they experience along the way? The clarity they reach? Steve wants that. So, he does something a little stupid. He follows them.
Lone Pine, Bishop, Mammoth, he follows them all the way up to Mount Shasta before he turns back for home. Two or three days in each town, he got real familiar with the people at the back of the pack of that year’s Northbound hikers. And it felt good, to have something to do over the summer, a way to get his own little taste of the PCT.
It becomes a thing, every summer. He does what he can for the majority of the hikers as they enter the Sierras, and then he follows them up California. The towns tend to treat him just the same as the hikers- he takes up odd jobs that none of the hikers seem inclined to take, does what he can to help the communities as he drifts through, even makes friends with the local angels. And it settles something in him, sends him back into the school year ready to deal with the chaos of his fifth grade class.
Steve meets Eddie the way he meets all his hikers- set up with his car at the Walkers Pass trailhead, a friendly smile and a good snack in hand. They don’t exchange many words- Eddie had really just come down for the pit toilet, but he’s still torn on whether it’s any better than shitting in a hole in the woods. Eddie heads back up, expecting to never see the pretty boy with the moles ever again.
Until he’s there at the trailhead just outside Independence. He accepts a ride, then, and trades names with the trail angel. And again in Bishop, where he learns that Steve does this every year. He looses him for a bit, until he snags a ride from Steve down to Meyers. That time, he tells Steve why he’s on the trail- it’s the first time he’s ever ridden down in Steve’s car without any other hikers present, so it’s a bit easier to open up. The ride back up to the trail the next day is significantly quieter.
Eddie’s not quite sure when the songs he’s writing in his old beat up journal go from grieving to longing. It’s hard to trace, when the emotions can feel so similar sometimes. He thinks some of the songs in the middle of it all are about both. He feels a bit guilty about it all- this trip was supposed to be about Wayne, about closure. It wasn’t supposed to go like this, falling for this elementary school teacher turned trail angel who is clearly sorting through his own shit if he spends his summers chasing people who are chasing their own dreams.
But still, Eddie writes. He writes songs like he’s never written before. Sure, he’s got plenty of songs about lusting after boys and those big scary feelings nobody wants to talk about but everyone wants to hear. But nothing like this weird sort of pining for a guy he’s spent maybe a total of 6 hours with.
Still a little reckless in his grief, Eddie leans into it. He fosters his longing little feelings until it blooms into a full blown crush. At that point he’s creeping ever closer to Mount Shasta, the place Steve had told him was his last stop coming down from the trailhead at Sierra City. He wasn’t eager to bring this last meeting closer, but he knew dragging his feet might cause him to miss Steve all together as he heads back down the road to home.
Nothing happens at Mount Shasta. Steve tells him it’s his last day before heading back- he’s got a long drive ahead of him, so he won’t be shuttling anyone up to the trailhead the next morning. He wishes Eddie a shy farewell as he climbs out of the passenger seat one last time- jokes that if he ever finds himself on the trail again, Steve would be more than happy to give him a ride.
The rest of his hike is rough. He’s got a tangled mess of emotions that it takes the next thousand miles to sort through, his grief over his uncle twisted up with this fresh grief of his weird little totally unrequited crush in a wholly unpleasant torment. The last 98 miles, he forms a plan.
He gives himself until the next June. Time to mourn, time to see if the feelings fade, time to put out the album he wrote on the trail. He names it something poetic, maybe something to do with trail magic or the nicknames of the hikers he met along the way. Maybe it’s after Wayne’s favorite trail. Maybe it’s simply called The Pass, a nod to the place he first met Steve.
The next June, when the weird feelings are still there and he missed Wayne but it doesn’t feel like it eats him alive every day anymore, he packs himself into his car and drives the 140 miles up to the Walker’s Pass trailhead. He provides a little magic- food and drink and a friendly face- while he waits for his angel to return. And he does, driving back up that windy road and pulling into the parking lot beside him.
Eddie asks him to dinner, and Steve accepts. Turns out he’s been harboring a crush for the past year too. It goes great, and even though they have to wade through the long distance- Eddie’s got his life in LA and Steve’s not quite ready to leave his town- and the trail- they make it work.
They get married up at Walker’s Pass. It’s Steve’s goodbye to the trail, despite having moved to the city a year prior. His own little bit of trail magic to carry with him the rest of his life.
The trail provides, after all.

Living with Sokka certainly had its ups and downs. On the one hand, he always kept things interesting—you never knew what you might come home to find, and he often made you laugh so hard you had tears streaming down your cheeks. He could also MacGyver just about anything that broke in your apartment (usually broken by him, however). You’d only had to call maintenance once, when you’d found him stuck under the kitchen sink, absolutely drenched, and shouting for help as water viciously sprayed from the pipes and the garbage disposal made some sort of ear-splitting shriek.
On the other hand, his mind moved a hundred miles a minute and he often forgot little things, like closing the kitchen cabinets or starting the dishwasher. One such thing he tended to forget was to finish his laundry. Often you’d find his still-wet clothes in the washer or his clean clothes in the dryer, having finished several hours ago. The two of you had worked out a deal: if Sokka did the dinner dishes and bought the snacks for Movie Fridays, you’d make sure the apartment ran smoothly despite his forgetfulness.
That’s how you found yourself dumping a load of his clothes onto his bed after finding them in the dryer while trying to do your own chores. You picked through the shirts and boxer briefs before settling on stealing a deep burgundy sweatshirt—an unspoken part of your deal was that if you found his clothes, you were allowed to steal a t-shirt or sweatshirt of your choosing because he knew you liked to wear the oversized tops on lazy days.
He came back later that night to find you standing in the kitchen, scrolling on your phone while you waited for your tea to steep. Your wet hair hung around your face and you wore the red hoodie with sleep shorts and thick, fuzzy socks.
“Hey,” he said, dropping his backpack on the ground by the door and kicking off his shoes.
“Hey.” You looked up at him as he bustled around the kitchen, tossing something into the microwave. “How was work?”
“Annoying,” he sighed in irritation, making you grin. He turned to you and frowned, reaching out to tug at the sleeve of your sweatshirt. “Where did you find that?”
“I stole it from your laundry, stupid. You left your stuff in the dryer again. I’ve never seen this one before, did you just get it?”
“Uh... yeah. Thanks for doing that for me.”
“Mhm.” You slipped your phone into the front pocket and cradled your mug. “Why do you ask? Do you want it back?”
“Nah, it’s okay. In fact, keep it. Red doesn’t suit me, I don’t know what I was thinking when I bought it.” He had a smirk on his face that made you very suspicious.
You raised an eyebrow while you slowly sipped your tea. “If you say so, Snoozles.” You flicked his arm as you passed him to retreat into your bedroom for the night. “Don’t forget to pick up your bag. And snacks for Friday night!”
“Yeah, yeah,” he responded through a mouthful of noodles.
Tumblr media
You and your friends were gathered in the living room like every other Friday, this week to watch Jurassic Park (yet another classic that neither Aang nor Zuko had seen, much to everybody’s disbelief). Katara and Aang sat together on the armchair, Zuko sat between you and Sokka on the couch, and Toph sat on the floor with her back against the sofa next to her service dog, Badger. You had your legs thrown across the guys’ laps and all eyes (except Toph’s) in the room were glued to the screen. Well, for the most part—Zuko kept looking over at you all night. You tried to keep your attention on the dinosaurs, but you could feel him staring at you. Eventually you caught his eye and raised your eyebrows expectantly. He simply flushed and looked away. You furrowed your brow and turned back to the movie, pulling your hands inside the sleeves of Sokka’s red sweatshirt and sticking them in the pocket.
“Did you guys know that Spielberg wanted the raptors to be taller for the movie and then a few months after they wrapped shooting, paleontologists found a new species of raptor that actually fit the movie portrayal really well? They almost named it after him,” Sokka said with his mouth full of popcorn.
“That’s nice, Sokka,” Katara responded absently, obviously not listening.
“Yeah, and they made the T. Rex sounds with an alligat—oof!” He wheezed when you jabbed your foot into his stomach. “Asshole!”
“Pack it up, IMDB,” you huffed.
“I just thought it was interes—ouch, Toph!” he yelped when Toph punched his shin.
“Stop talking, I can’t hear anything!”
“Just watch it!”
“I can’t!” Toph barked. Sokka crossed his arms and slumped down, grumbling to himself. You and Zuko glanced over at each other and broke out in grins, pursing your lips to hold back your laughter.
As the movie progressed, you noticed the tension in Zuko’s shoulders. He had his jaw clenched throughout the whole scene with the kids trapped in the car with the T. Rex attacking. You nudged him with your knee and he turned to look at you.
“You scared, Zu?” you teased in a low voice, leaning forward to squeeze his bicep. “You want me to protect you from the dinos?”
He rolled his eyes but still lifted his arm, inviting you sit up and tuck yourself into his side. As you leaned against him he seemed to loosen up, settling into his seat and resting his head against yours. Sokka noticed this and looked around Zuko to waggle his eyebrows suggestively and very conspicuously, making your face heat up in embarrassment. Unfortunately, the idiot had caught wind of your crush on his best friend and had been relentlessly tormenting you about it ever since. You glared at him until he sat back, looking disgustingly smug.
After the movie finished, everyone got up to stretch and refill their drinks before the next one started. While talking with Toph in the kitchen, you noticed Zuko standing outside on the balcony by himself. You excused yourself from the conversation and made your way out to him while all your friends hooted in the background. It seemed everyone knew about your attraction to the boy, except for the boy himself.
“Hey,” you said softly, stepping outside. He looked around at you and gave you a small smile that made your head spin. “You okay?”
“Yeah,” he sighed, “just getting some air. It’s getting hot in there with everyone in the room.”
You nodded and stood next to him to lean against the railing. After a few beats of silence, you could feel his stare on you again. You met his gaze curiously. “What’s up, Zu? You’ve been looking at me all night.”
“Nothing, it’s just—“ he narrowed his eyes and cocked his head to the side as if inspecting you “—is that my sweatshirt?”
You frowned. “No, I took it from Sokka.”
“Lying bastard.” His eyes widened at your offended look when you rounded on him. “Not you! I—um, it is mine. I gave it to Sokka the other day and when I asked for it he insisted he already gave it back to me. The fucker gaslit me over a sweatshirt.”
“Sounds about right,” you giggled. “I’m sorry. I’ll give it back before you leave.”
He pulled at one of the drawstrings. “You can keep it, if you want. It’s, uh—“ he cleared his throat “—it looks better on you.”
You stood facing each other now, barely a breath away from being chest-to-chest. “I can’t take your sweatshirt.”
“You take Sokka’s all the time.”
“Yeah, because he always forgets his laundry in the machine. He owes me.” Zuko laughed a little at that, still fiddling with the string. You could feel your heart racing at his proximity. He sucked in a breath and seemed to brace himself for his next words.
“I kind of like how you look in my clothes, though. Might have to start leaving my stuff around here so you stop wearing Sokka’s.” The confidence in his voice was betrayed by the rising blush on his face that surely rivaled your own as you stared up at him with wide eyes.
Your lips parted to speak, but no words came out. All you could squeak out was a soft, “Zuko,” when he raised his hand to brush a loose piece of hair back behind your ear. You felt frozen, rooted to the spot, when his fingertips grazed your cheekbone. His hand lingered there, palm radiating heat into your already flushed cheeks.
“I—“ he pulled his hand back and chuckled nervously, scratching the back of his neck awkwardly “—sorry.”
“For what?” you asked.
“I don’t know.” You grinned at each other and in that moment it could’ve been just you and Zuko left on the planet and it wouldn’t’ve mattered; everything you wanted and needed was right there in front of you, if you were bold enough to take that final step toward it.
“Zuko—“
“Hey, we—oh!“ Both of you whipped your heads around when the door slid open to reveal Aang standing there. His whole face went red and he laughed in embarrassment. “Sorry! Just wanted to tell you guys we were gonna start the movie, but no rush! Take your time!” He started to back away and you felt yourself release from Zuko’s magnetic pull now that your small bubble had been invaded.
“It’s okay, Aang.” You smiled gently at your friend and started to make your way back inside. “We were about to head in anyways.”
Aang shot Zuko an apologetic look before nodding and hurrying away. Zuko couldn’t find it in himself to be bitter about the ruined moment when you reached out towards him and gazed up at him with those warm, bright eyes. “You coming, Zu?”
“Yeah, right behind you.” He took your outstretched hand and laced your fingers together, squeezing his palm against yours.
Maybe you weren’t the last people on Earth, and maybe you hadn’t taken that leap just yet, but something between you two shifted and finally clicked into place out there on that balcony. Everything would work out just fine—he knew it in the way you kept your fingers slotted perfectly between his as Jaws played on the television, and in the way you quickly rose onto your toes to press a kiss to his cheek in the hallway before he left. He couldn’t wipe the dreamy little smile off his face for the rest of the night, even as he laid awake in bed thinking about you.
Yeah; everything would be just fine.

Cruel Summer- Part 4. Out of the Woods
Tumblr media
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods? Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet?
Part 1. Getaway Car
Part 2. Holy Ground
Part 3. Afterglow
Tumblr media
It’s gonna break his heart, and it’s gonna be her fault entirely, but not one thing that’s worth it comes without risk. This is exactly the price she’s worth and even though it is crazy that he’s choosing to give her all the power to break his heart and hurt him like no one’s ever done it before, he knows this is exactly what he wants to do.
He’s gonna get to know her, the real her, even if it’s the last thing he does.
“So, I’m gonna ask you a bunch of questions and you have to answer honestly and directly. No walking around the question. No cryptic answers. Nothing vague either. And you can’t ask me anything.” he tells her, over breakfast the next morning, allowing a smile to play on his lips.
“Okay.” She mumbles while still eating the boxed waffles they prepared, but also mentally praying he asks questions she can answer and it’s nothing too risky for them.
“What’s your favorite movie?”
She couldn’t help but just smile at that.
They spent most of the morning sitting around in the different areas of the cabin, talking. Well, it was mostly Tom asking questions and Amelia answering them. He asked about the basic favorites, like food, places, and stuff, but he’s now venturing into her experiences growing up and he’s not surprised that she turned out to be the wildest kid ever.
“And you were... how old when you did that?” Tom asked Amelia while he was laughing at the story she just told him.
“I must’ve been 15 at most! I’m telling you Tom, I was a wild teen!” Her head was resting on his lap, his hand running through her hair as they enjoyed looking at the lake right in front of them. Silence fell between them after a while, and even though his fingers were still fidgeting with her hair, the atmosphere got heavy and uncomfortable.
Amelia wouldn’t admit it out loud, but the burden in her heart kept getting heavier by the minute, this was a nightmare materializing under her nose. She was trying to riddle this all over again, trying to find the right words to keep everything together, tiptoeing around to make sure the bomb won’t go off on her. Just like sitting with her father for dinner. This used to never happen with Tommy.
And then there’s Tom, desperately trying to figure out if she’s okay, if he’s okay with him being in this situation. For four years, all he’s ever wanted was to make her happy, to see her free and make all of her dreams come true, see her become the best woman she could be, but instead he’s seen her build her walls higher and become more and more submissive to her dad and that sucks.
After about an hour of absolute silence, Amelia shot up from Tom’s lap and extended her hand out to him. “Get up, we’re going shopping!”
He gave her a puzzled look, but he obeyed her all the same, not letting go of her hand and bringing it to his chest and smiling at her.
“What will we buy?” he asked with an amused look on his face.
“Dinner.”
Tumblr media
They spent most of the remainder of the day browsing the small town near the forest, looking at all the stores and playing around in thrift stores and costumes, all before hitting a Walmart and stocking up on all their favorite movie night snacks. The whole situation felt almost normal, almost like the old times.
Looking at Tom laughing and smiling, joking around and being the bouncy ball of joy that he’s always been is refreshing, it’s the happiest she could possibly feel. Just one laugh and she can forget everything that’s ever gone wrong with her life. But it sucks that it never lasts too long. It’s just a couple of minutes. But that’s enough.
They loaded all three frozen pizzas that are gonna be eaten mostly by Tom, along with all the five pints of ice cream that are mostly for Amelia and the rest of the junk food on the trunk of the car, and they made their way back to the cabin, blasting the music high as they sang along to their favorite road trip playlist all the way until they pulled up to the cabin. The smiling and laughing seemed familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. It was normal for their old selves, but not at all familiar to them after the picnic situation. It’s almost like it never happened.
Almost.
They set up their movie night in their room, not even caring about crumbs on the bed or grease on the sheets, they played The Exorcist even though Amelia hates scary movies, but it gave her a reason to cuddle up to Tom while eating. The pizzas were gone within the first 20 minutes. They almost didn’t hear the rain when it started pouring, but they didn't care, it gave them more of an excuse to snuggle up further in the blankets and scoot even closer together.
She would never admit it, but one of Amelia's biggest fears was thunder, so once they heard it, she held on to Tom for dear life. Things got worse when the electricity went off after lightning struck incredibly close to the cabin.
They looked at each other for a second, trying to find their faces in the dark, until Tom took his phone out and turned the flashlight on. "Okay, what should we do now?"
"Don't ask me, I'm terrified right now!" She said, still holding on tightly to Tom and refusing to let go.
He got her to stand up and help him find something they could use to illuminate the place a little bit. They started with the fireplace, because Amelia refused to move away from Tom as long as it was pitch back, so the little bit of light the fire provided got her looking around the living room for flashlights or candles or whatever, while Tom did the same all around the cabin.
They found some candles and a couple of flashlights that they got working by taking the batteries from the remotes. They stayed close to the fire anyways, but they brought the rest of the food and the blankets just to eat their anxiety away while cuddling and assuring Amelia that there was nothing outside that could harm her.
At around 1 am, they heard a pretty loud crack coming from the porch right outside the cabin, Amelia screamed incredibly loudly and probably popped Tom’s eardrum in the process, because he got so startled that he jumped around an inch to his side; but after the initial shock, and seeing that Amelia won’t stop going on about their time being over and how being murdered by psycho wasn’t the way she wanted to go… he decided to go check on whatever was going on outside.
It was just a branch that fell off a tree and hit the porch.
He did pull a prank on her by dragging the branch around the porch while screaming for help. But then he heard Amelia screaming and running around to hide instead of going to see if he was okay. Charming, really.
He got back in the cabin and found Amelia facing the front door, armed with a ladle as a sword and a pot top as a shield; he could not laugh at the picture in front of him, he loved how silly Amelia could get if she allowed herself to let loose.
“Is that really how you were planning to defend yourself against a potential murderer?! That’s a ladle! Not even a knife?!”
She then started laughing her ass off as well, dropping her “weapons'' and holding her stomach as she laughed freely and loudly. Tom went over to her and hugged her as they continued to laugh. The storm and darkness long forgotten.
Tumblr media
They stayed in the living room, close to the fire for as long as they could, Amelia was starting to drift off in Tom’s arms, with his fingers slowly running up and down her arm, feeling his steady breathing and slow humming of that very first song they danced together the very first night they met.
“Ames, I got something for you” He merely whispered, not wanting to break the peaceful atmosphere they had fallen into.
“Really? What is it?” She asked with her eyes still closed.
Tom reached down to the pocket of the pants he was wearing earlier that day, a small box appeared in front of Amelia’s eyes, who panicked immediately and sat up straight as a reaction. She turned to face Tom as her hands covered her mouth.
“I swear it’s not a ring.” he said calmly. She sighed in relief and relaxed a little bit, she still felt alarmed since a gesture like this is something she doesn’t deserve. But he looks so pretty and he’s looking at her in that way that makes her knees weak.
The box opened to reveal a gold necklace, a small pendant of a butterfly being the main view; it wasn’t anything flashy and full of diamonds like the presents her father gives her when he’s trying to get her to do something. It was simple and perfect, exactly her taste.
Amelia’s eyes welled up with tears and she grazed the pendant ever so slightly; she then looked up at Tom who was looking straight at her already, he watched all her movements intently, fascinated by how she admired the little details he thought of while picking the piece of jewelry for her.
Of course, when he bought it he thought this moment would be a lot more romantic and serious. Not under candlelight, with no electricity, after a horrible storm and after a horror movie-like crisis. Not a night after having a fight where she practically told him she’d be breaking up with him. But it doesn’t matter.
“I got it for you because I want you to always remember that you have your own wings and can fly anywhere you want, whenever you want to. You don’t need anyone’s permission.”
She stared at him, box clutched to her chest and she started crying passionately, letting herself sob and feel the pain she had been carrying for the past two years and that was inflicted by her entire family.
“Tom… I’m set to be married in three days. I’ve only ever met the guy a couple times in my life, but I can’t get out of it without losing everything I have or putting you at risk and… I have no wings Tom. I have no wings, I have no life. I’ll be tied to my father and my family for my entire life and there’s nothing I can do about it.”
She was crying and sobbing, face red and puffy. Tom had never seen her like this, so completely wrecked and raw. It was heartbreaking, both seeing her in that state and taking in what she just said.
“We’ll figure this out, okay? It’s okay. We still have tomorrow, don’t we?” she asked, taking her face in his hands and looking straight into her eyes to reassure her.
“Thank you.” She replied in a whisper and grabbed his hand to kiss it.

“Cerebos: The Crystal City” Actual Play Part III: The End
This is the third and final entry in a series of posts recounting a session of actual play from Cerebos: the Crystal City, currently crowdfunding on Kickstarter. The first two parts can be found here:
https://tumblr.penguinking.com/post/646498084013195264
https://tumblr.penguinking.com/post/646788426842128384
This session was conducted on March 20th, 2021, with Matthew Dorbin as GM, and Amelia Gorman, Ashley Flanagan, Will Mendoza, and Kevin Snow playing. The events of play were recorded by Zach Welhouse.
The First Leg of the journey has ended, and the Lady in Blue is the Seeker. She remembers her past: she was a small-time crook who left the City by the Sea to kill her murderous, thieving sister. Having pieced together her past, she has until arriving at Cerebos to decide if she still wants to kill the Lady in Red.
The Unqualified Robot, Tinderling, and the Lonesome Seafarer won’t find the answers they were looking for in Cerebos. However, they’ve ridden the rails with the Lady in Blue long enough they may have learned something else. Aiding her in her journey may clarify their own futures.
Tinderling and the Unqualified Robot hope the Lady in Blue will kill her sister. Actions have consequences and violence is sometimes necessary to restore balance. The Lonesome Seafarer has had enough pain. She hopes the Lady in Blue will be able to move on – or find common ground with the woman who did her wrong.
Sixth Round of Train Actions
Tinderling notices an enormous marble building in the distance. From its Greek pillars and statues of Justice, it’s probably a courthouse. None of the travellers are on especially great terms with the law, but the train stops anyway. This journey isn’t just about them. There are other passengers too!   A trial is in session when the passengers arrive, and it requires four jurors. As outsiders, the travelers are unbiased. Wigged functionaries encourage them to attend the day’s arguments.   It’s the trial of Hodur, Norse god of winter and accidental murderer of Baldr. Baldr is testifying when the jury enters: “My death was absolutely necessary! My death was all part of a larger plan!” He cites Romulus & Remus, Osiris & Set, and other famous examples of fratricide. Sometimes a death is necessary for the greater good.
Tinderling’s player spends 1 Momentum to create a Danger 2 Stop as a Saintly Revelation. She doesn’t want to make the journey to Cerebos more difficult for anybody, but she does present the Lady in Blue with an argument to stay the course.
As with the previous Stop, the other travelers should have received a Train Action before arriving at the courthouse. The GM had been keeping an eye on the clock and made an executive decision to ensure the trains kept running on time. The whole session, including several snack breaks, fit into a four-hour session with only fifteen minutes of overflow!
Stop Actions: The Trial of Hodur
The Unqualified Robot has decided to Seize the Opportunity to divest itself of its past wares. It is defined by actions now, not junky gadgets. It offers gadget after gadget from its backpack to passing barristers, seeking some way to communicate. It rolls a Success and scores a giant foam finger with “FRATRICIDE” written on it. The new jury is fitting in with the trial, so the Danger reduces to 1.
The Lonesome Seafarer waits for a lull in the trial and vaults out of the jury box to cross-examine Hodur: “Did you mean to kill Baldr?” She rolls 1 + 5 = 6, but spends a rank of Tunnel Vision to really focus on the heart of the matter and eliminate all obstacles. The rerolled 1 becomes a 5, netting the Lonesome Seafarer an Inspired Success -- and one Momentum to her authoritative hat for rolling doubles!   Hodur begins to weep under the incisive questioning: “I could never have done it if I had known! Even if I had to for a better future, I couldn’t kill my brother!” The Stop Danger is reduced to 0. Had Tinderling paid an extra Momentum while setting up the Stop, the Unqualified Robot or the Lonesome Seafarer would have received a keepsake for their efforts.
Tinderling, disgusted by Hodur’s breakdown, starts carving something rude in the juror’s box with her bird bone sewing needle. She’s learning that she’s really into this justified violence thing. How come these people don’t understand progress is impossible without sacrifice? She rolls to Release the Touchstone – a symbol of peace – and succeeds.   The needle snaps. She burns with clarity and gains one Contemplation.
The Lady in Blue isn’t in danger. She rests, shakes hands with a few visiting gods, and loads up on jury cookies. She removes one Momentum.
The court is in an uproar over Hodur’s outburst. The travelers aren’t interested in being further embroiled in someone else’s problems, so they sneak out back and return to the train.
Sixth Round of Train Actions (Continued)
The Lonesome Seafarer triggers a Revelation to counter Tinderling’s full-throated endorsement of fratricide. Two high-pitched voices begin shouting from the next car: “I hate you! I wish you weren’t my sister anymore!” The fight spills over into the travellers’ car as two six-year-old girls shove and cry into each other. It’s a Danger 2 Event demonstrating that just because siblings fight doesn’t mean they have to be enemies.
The Unqualified Robot triggers its Saintly Revelation. Since leaving the courtroom, it has been busy building an effigy – a new sibling – from its unsold junk and extraneous body parts. If it can’t communicate with people, maybe something closer to its temperament will do the trick.   Calamity strikes! After a disagreement, the Robot and its twin begin to fight. Encouraged by the violence they’ve recently observed, it escalates. Presumably the twin was at fault. The Robot’s player explains, “I think the moral here is the danger siblings hold and how they must be destroyed.” The Robot Battle Event is Danger 5, threatening to strip the train to its bones. Luckily, Cerebos is in sight!
Since the Saints and Demons have introduced their Revelations, it’s time for the Endgame. Cerebos arrives! Its towering spires of crystal and neon illuminate the night. Squabbling siblings, a pair of robots engaged in an all-out hurly burly, and passengers who have begun to take sides pour from the train, attracting the attention of a number of station agents armed with stern frowns and truncheons.
Normally, the gates of Cerebos are a Danger 2 Stop, but the unresolved Events from the train boost it to a worrying Danger 4.
Stop Actions: The Gates of Cerebos
Tinderling stands on a barrel and fans the flames of animosity, pulling unrelated passers-by into the fight: “Hey! This is what happens when you have an evil twin. Monsters are monsters and they don’t change!” She Causes Trouble to boost the Stop to Danger 6 and extend the scene. Everyone receives an extra cycle of Stop Actions.
The Lonesome Seafarer also trusts her words to address the growing riot, arguing for peace. She draws on the harsh lessons she learned from Scurvy, her missing mate: “You have to give people a chance to change!” It’s like shouting into a storm. Fists and rocks fly as she takes Damage, her words unheeded.
The Unqualified Robot briefly breaks free from its apocalyptic struggle with its evil twin. These… emotions are just holding it back. It tries to Release its last remaining expression slide, a smiley face defaced by angry eyebrows.   An Ugly Break. Communication is easy when it involves throwing things. It gains Momentum on its whiskey flask and gains Contemplation. It thanks Tinderling for introducing the path of rage.
The Lady in Blue lays into the fray with elbows and right hooks, clearing people away from the Unqualified Robot. They’ve shared whiskey. Everyone just needs to stand back. She takes Damage and reduces the Danger to 4.
Tinderling is taken aback at the chaos she has unleashed. It was all going so well, but the Unqualified Robot is taking a lot of hits. It’s burning too bright! She Seizes an Opportunity and starts laying into station police and onlookers alike. Even spending Burns at Both Ends to flare up like a hero, she takes Damage to reduce the Danger to 3.
The Lonesome Seafarer pushes through the thinning crowd of combatants to the main event: robot vs. robot. She engages the evil twin with watertight logic and the Coat of Thesus Trait: “That robot is made out of your same parts! Why would you fight yourself? That’s not fratricide. That’s suicide!” After a string of unlucky rerolls, she ekes out a Partial Success, taking Damage while wrestling the Evil Twin off the Unqualified Robot. Danger 2.
The Unqualified Robot scrambles back, throwing everything in reach at its evil twin: unsold junk, garbage, rocks. It’s not enough. The only way to end this is to carry its actions to their logical conclusion.   The Unqualified Robot tears off its head and flings it at the effigy.   The effigy, stunned by the extreme act of violence (and the high-velocity assault) explodes. Danger 1.
The Lady in Blue needs a moment. Watching her travel companion tear off its head to kill its sibling is a lot. Battered passengers and station police slink off. A siren wails in the distance.   The Lady in Blue turns to the squabbling children from the train, who stayed focused on one another the whole time the battle raged around them. “Kids. Let’s talk. What happened?” she asks.   The sisters explain a very long, very important story that involves teasing and boysenberry (or possibly poisonberry) tea. It is ridiculous.   The Lady in Blue sighs long and deep. “It’s not like I’m not already headed to Hell. Try this, kids. This is what real poison tastes like.” She offers them each a sip of whiskey, transferring their animosity to her as they taste the rough, foul drink. Two-vs-one isn’t fair, but the Lady in Blue weathers their coughing and shin-kicking.   Failure. The Lady in Blue takes stress Damage and the round ends: “I solved a fight between two children and I feel terrible about it.”
Epilogue
Tinderling, the Lonesome Seafarer, and the Lady in Blue walk the backstreets of Cerebos. They don’t glisten with empyrean light like the main thoroughfares, but neither are they patrolled by gendarmes searching for whoever it was who started the brawl at the train station.
The Lady in Blue takes out her revolver, spins the cylinder, and stares down the barrel. She pops out the last bullet, sheathes her gun, and leaves her fellow travelers. She has chosen the Devil’s Path, deviating from her initial goal thanks – in a strong part – to the tragic brutality of the Unqualified Robot.
Everybody looks at their goals, laughing at the fresh round of revelations. The only thing left to do now is tally up Momentum and Contemplation to make epilogue rolls.
The Unqualified Robot died doing what it loved: throwing something. The end. No moral.
Tinderling is a member of the Walking Wounded, unable to settle down in Cerebos, which seems just as bad for workers as the City by the Sea. Nevertheless, she’s gained a newfound appreciation for robot rights.   Before leaving for Cerebos, robots were machines, jerks, and scabs to Tinderling. But the Unqualified Robot taught her that treating robots like tools would only lead to calamity. Maybe her redemption lies in solidarity with all workers...
The Lonesome Seafarer’s epilogue roll is similar to Tinderling’s. Scurvy isn’t in Cerebos, but she’s found moderating influences elsewhere: “That robot ripping its own head off has taught me some valuable things about myself.” She still hopes to find her missing mate someday, but it isn’t quite the obsession it once was. In the meantime, she’ll keep traveling.
The Lady in Blue rolls a 4: Self-Actualization! She acknowledges the wrong the Lady in Red did to her, but finds peace in putting aside revenge. She’ll live her own life, not one controlled by a further descent into bloodshed.   Strolling the streets of Cerebos, she sees Tinderling passing out leaflets and the Lonesome Seafarer inspecting a ship-in-a-bottle in a shop window. She feels a fondness for the Lonesome Sea Captain, perhaps from the adventures they’ve had or perhaps because it was she who first directed the Lady in Blue to Cerebos.   “Captain,” says the Lady in Blue, taking the captain’s arm. “How do you feel about having a whiskey with me?”   “I’ve only had grog before,” the Lonesome Seafarer hazards.   “I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.”
The Lady in Blue and the Lonesome Seafarer walk through the electric streets, arm-in-arm, in search of drinks.

Helluva Boss Vol 2: Loo Loo Land
Striker awoke with a start, panting heavily. His heart pounded so fast that he thought it would burst out of his chest at any moment now. The imp sighed as he ran a hand through his ash white hair.
He had that nightmare again. He didn't cry, as he had no more tears to shed and it wouldn't being her back but the wound was still raw. He'd tell himself that he did what she asked of him: to save their son. However, the guilt was still there.
Striker went to the kitchen for a glass of water. As he looked through the window, he noticed it was raining. There were no thunders tonight but still, he better go check on Jake just in case.
Something pulled on his pants. Speak of the devil! Striker looked down and found the infant next to his leg, his little hand grasping his pants. How Jake managed to crawl all the way down from his nursery was a mystery to Striker.
"What's up, kiddo?" Striker asked, not really expecting an answer. Jake reached out his hands, asking to be picked up. Sighing, he bent down to pick up his son. " Can't sleep either, huh? That makes two of us, my boy," he said gently as he walked up the stairs. "How about we keep each other company for a while? It'll be less lonely that way."
Striker sat on his bed and placed Jake on his lap. He entertained the little one with the rattling of his tail for a while until Jake lost interest and snuggled into his father's chest, yawning. Striker knew what the little one needed. Jake protested via whimpers as he was tucked back into his nearly started to wail if not for the familiar sound of a guitar's strings and his father's voice as the cradle was rocked from side to side.
Come stop your crying
It will be alright
Just take my hand
Hold it tight
I will protect you
From all around you
I will be here
Don't you cry
For one so small
You seem so strong
My arms will hold you
Keep you safe and warm
This bond between us
Can't be broken
I will be here don't you cry
'Cause you'll be in my heart
Yes, you'll be in my heart
From this day on
Now and forevermore
You'll be in my heart
No matter what they say
You'll be here in my heart
Always
Always…
Jake had long been lulled into sleep by the end of the song. Smiling, Striker kissed the little one's forehead.
"Good night."
*HB*
"M and M, J and S, get in here! We're going to Loo Loo Land!"
Striker frowned under his hat, annoyed at having his nap interrupted. "Isn't that the rip-off of Lucifer's far more popular LuLu World?" he inquired, raising an eyebrow.
"That's right, Strike! Stolas is paying us extra cash for making sure he and his daughter are still breathing by the end of the day."
Striker covered his face with his hat again. "Sorry, Blitz, my contract only includes assassination jobs."
"Look at it this way: you're going to 'assassinate' whoever tries to lay a hand on Stolas and his daughter."
The cowboy frowned. "Why us? Doesn't that blueblood have a whole legion of guards at his disposal?"
"Come on, dad! I want to go to Loo Loo Land!" Jake pleaded, taking his father's hat. "I've never been to a theme park!"
"Yeah, Strike, it'll be fun!" Millie wrapped an arm around the cowboy's shoulder. "You won't find a cheaper theme park in all of Hell, plus it's a good opportunity for you and Jake to spend some quality time together!"
Striker would have protested further, but Jake (and Blitzo) were giving him the 'puppy eyes' face. At last, he murmured. "Ugh. Fine."
They picked up the owl Goetias in I.M.P.'s van and went straight to the theme park in the Greed ring. As always, Striker and Jake rode Bombproof to avoid an overcrowding inside the vehicle, especially with two bluebloods inside.
Striker'd seen a few tv commercials about Loo Loo Land, but something he'd learned over the years is that no intentional rip-off of anything was worth wasting money on. He was soon proven right once they arrived at the place. Most of the attractions within Loo Loo Land were either broken, cracked, or disheveled-looking. And judging by the look on Octavia's face, she didn't like it here either. Jake, on the other hand…
"Cool! Look, dad, there's a carousel! Can we go? No, wait, I wanna try the roller coaster first! Whoa, is that a dragon? I must pet it!" the impling was running around the place, awing over the rides and booths with wide eyes.
"Blitz better add another zero to my next paycheck." Striker murmured under his breath.
"Woow! I haven't been to this place since I was a tot! It hasn't changed a bit- oh, LOOK!" Millie pulled Moxxie and Jake into a hug and gestured to an old dinosaur-like animatronic. "It's Big Woobly!"
"That is… deeply upsetting," Moxxie whispered.
"Oh, come on! It's fun! You've never been here?"
"No, theme parks always disturbed me. Especially the mascots."
"I agree with Moxxie." Millie, Jake, and Moxxie himself gave Striker a baffled look. "As incredible as it sounds."
"Well, hey there!" Striker was caught off guard as Moxxie suddenly jumped into his arms with a frightened yelp as a guy in an old cartoonish apple costume appeared out of nowhere. The only reason he didn't drop Moxxie was that he too was disturbed by the awful, smelly costume. "I'm Loo Loo! Welcome to Loo Loo Land! If ya'll get hurt, just try and sue us!"
Striker quickly wrapped his tail around Jake's waist and lifted him up before he could get too close to 'Loo Loo'.
"Hey, dad, let go!" the impling protested.
"Stay away from that predator, kiddo." Striker finally dropped Moxxie to the ground.
"I have a question."
"Well, ask away, little girlie!" the mascot made a poor attempt at goofy laughter.
Octavia sneered. "Is it true this park is just a really shameless spin-off or Lucifer's far more popular Lu Lu World? This place reeks of insecure corporate shame."
Striker held tightly unto Jake until they left the creepy mascot behind. Being new to this place, he decided to follow Millie and Moxxie around for a while.
"You really love this place, huh?" Moxxie asked casually.
Millie nodded eagerly. "I love this place! My parents would bring me and my siblings here when they could swing it. Money-wise."
"Dad, look!" Jake ran towards a gift shop and pressed his face against the window, eyeing a plush dragon like the one on the Petting Zoo. "Can I have one?"
Striker only had to look at the price, 400 souls, to reply. "Absolutely not."
"Whyy?"
"400 souls for a doll you'll end up throwing away? Don't you wanna throw away all of my salary, since you're on it?"
Jake pouted, arms crossed. "Meanie."
"He does have a point. I mean, that much for a novelty cup you use one time?" Moxxie added, pointing at said cup worth 29 souls.
"Cause it's Loo Loo Land!" Millie chirped.
"Listen to your hoe, Mox." Blitzo seemingly had no trouble with loading up on the theme park's merch. "Hey, Strike, how 'bout you and I take the first watch while M and M have a little fun with Jakey?"
"Can I, dad? Please, please, please!"
Striker sighed. "Fine. Just stay close to Millie and Moxxie and listen to whatever they tell-"
"Um, Striker, I have to interrupt your fatherly monologue, but they already left." Blitzo was right. Millie, Moxie, and Jake were gone already.
Striker merely sighed and loaded his rifle.
*HB*
Jake still couldn't understand why his father had never brought him to Loo Loo Land before. This place was incredible! The rides, the junk food, kicking the guy in the Loo Loo costume; for some reason, he couldn't resist the urge every time he saw the apple costume. And of course, Moxie simply had to ruin everything. His wimpy stomach couldn't handle The Lawsuit ride and he ended up vomiting unto the people in the front car, Jake included. They had to get him new clothes in the nearest gift shop.
"You're so lucky my dad wasn't here or he would have fed you to that," Jake pointed at the dragon peeking over the Petting zoo fence.
"Okay, guys, how about we take a look around the smaller rides?" Millie suggested.
"You mean the kids area? That's where the Petting Zoo is! Can we go there to see the dragon?"
"I don't care as long as I don't have to get on top of it," Moxxie murmured, his hand still clutching his stomach. Jake squealed happily.
There were lots of animals at the Petting Zoo. Jake recognized some from Wrath, most notably some Hellhorses with green fire to reflect Greed. He had seen how Bombproof's fire color change from orange to red each time they entered Pride, and it had changed to a minty green when they entered Greed. There were other animals he had only seen in books too, but his attention was entirely focused on the giant red, black and white wyvern. Known as Hellvern, it is native to Greed and is often used as a 'guardian dog' of sorts by Overlords.
Jake felt a shiver down his spine as the giant dragon stared down at him curiously. Taking a deep breath, he stroked the animal's snout. Once he realized his hand was attached to his body, Jake began to laugh and jump.
"I touched the dragon, I touched the dragon!" he cried out happily. "Just wait until I tell dad!"
"Oh, I bet he'll be very proud of you!" Millie smirked, ruffling the impling's hair. "
Afterward, they took a break from the rides and wandered around the snack and game booths. Jake and Millie ate big cones of ice cream bugs and fried butter sticks. Moxxie chose not to consume any 'junk food of questionable origin'.
"This place is amazing! Man, I wish I'd come here sooner!" Jake said happily as he looked around the game booths.
"So Striker has never brought here? He would have loved the rides for sure!" Millie pointed out.
"Nah, dad's never been too fond of machines. He'd rather do things the old-fashioned way."
Moxxie scoffed. "Yeah, why would he come to work on a horse otherwise?"
"Well, at least we don't waste time on looking for a parking spot."
"Touché, kid."
"Hey, now that we're on it, I don't think we've ever met your mom."
Jake stopped in his tracks. His… mom? It's the first time someone's brought that up. Dad has never talked about her and there are no photos of her in the house. But surely he had one, right? Everyone has one.
"Hello, hello! Step right up and win a thing!"
Millie's excited cry distracted Jake from his thoughts. "Oh, look, Moxxie! A thing!" The 'thing' in question was a purple stuffed penguin-like creature with imp horns and pink overalls.
"Oh, you like that thing?"
"Yesss! I don't really know what that thing is but I want that thing!"
Moxxie smirked. "Finally, something I can handle." he placed a soul bill on the counter. "Okay! One game, please!"
Unsurprisingly, the cork but the target. To Jake's surprise, however, the target barely moved. Moxxie didn't seem to mind since he had hit the bullseye.
"Strike one, little man!"
Moxie's smugness faded instantly. "But I hit it!"
"Hmm, I don't know what to tell ya, buddy. The target, see?" the vendor pointed at said target "It didn't go down, so yeah, no go, bro."
Growling, Moxie placed another bill on the counter and fired another cork at the bullseye, but again it didn't move. Annoyed, Moxxie slapped the pistol. "The Heaven's wrong with this thing?!"
"Oh. Man, a real shame, I tell ya." the carnie made crying gestures in a mocking manner, prompting Moxxie to slam yet another bill on the counter.
*HB*
As incredible as it may sound, Striker envied his son. Jake was probably having a great time at the admittedly cool-looking rides while he is stuck babysitting a blueblood. He couldn't say he was completely bored, though. Turns out the pervert was right when he said there'd be lots of people going after him. Striker even ended up making a bet with Blitzo over who could shoot more people by the end of the day. Up to now, Striker was winning.
The cowboy casually spotted Octavia, who by then looked like she'd snap at any second now. He couldn't blame her, the show's musical number was rather bizarre.
"How come that pervert hasn't noticed his daughter is not enjoying himself at all?" he asked Blitzo casually.
"Not our business, Strike. We're their bodyguards, not their family therapists. Speaking of which," Blitzo shot an assassin in the back before he could stab Stolas. Blitzo smirked. "That makes it four on my count, Striker."
"Let's save that for later, Blitz. Looks like the mare's finally kicked." Striker motioned to Octavia as she fled the tent, Stolas following closely behind.
"You should find Jakey. It's Millie and Moxxie's watch, anyway, they can go keep an eye on Stolas."
Striker nodded gratefully and left the circus tent. Surprisingly, it didn't take him too long to find Jake, Moxxie, and Millie. They were at a shooting game booth. Judging by the enraged look in Moxxie's face and the 600 souls in the vendor's hands, the wimp just got scammed.
"Hey, dad! You won't believe what I did, I petted a dragon!"
Striker chuckled and petted the boy's head. "I'm glad you had a great time, kiddo."
"Hey, you, cowboy! You look like ye might be better at shooting this sad little fella."
Striker frowned. He knew from experience that these booths were rigged to scam customers out of their money at the vendor's leisure. He had a better idea. Smirking, Striker pulled out his pistol and handed it to Jake.
"Show them what you got, kiddo."
The impling's face lit up. He pointed the barrel of the weapon at the carnie to give him a fright before shooting all of the targets with flawless precision in quick succession. The bullets went right through the targets, leaving big holes. The carne was reduced to a trembling, frightened mess.
"H-Hey, take it easy, p-pal…" he stuttered nervously as Jake pointed the gun at him again.
"That's my boy!" Striker laughed, patting Jake's shoulder.
"Now I think," Moxxie sneered as he leaned unto the counter. "That you owe us a thing."
Something crashed through the roof of the shooting gallery and on top of the carnie. The group leaned in to take a look.
"Sir?" Moxxie asked.
Striker sighed once he turned around and found the theme park literally on fire. "Really, Blitz? I leave you alone for a second and you screw the damn place up?"
"Oh, hey guys!" Blitzo seemingly didn't hear him as he drew his pistol. "You should probably go, uh, make sure Stolas is okay. I got some… unfinished business to take care of."
The group dispersed, with Millie quickly grabbing her plush thing. Strike quickly picked Jake up and moved out of the way as Blitzo fired at the burning robot; the thing caught the bullet in its mouth and curled up to roll towards Blitzo in a fiery charge. Blitzo jumped out of the way just as the robot hit the booth and it exploded in an inferno of green flames.
"Um, Dad, should we lend Blitzo a hand?"
"I suppose so lest he ends up blowing the whole place up with us inside."
Jake smirked as he spotted the dragon from before on the loose. "I got an idea!"
Striker knew what the boy was thinking. He wasn't sure if it was such a good idea, though; he's dealt with wild hogs, hellhorses, and many fauna, but never a fully-grown Hellvern. Then again, he's always liked challenges. He had Jake climbed onto his back and cling to his neck.
"Hang on tight, my boy, this will be one hell of a ride!"
Grabbing a discarded rope and tying it into a lasso, Striker expertly threw it over the dragon's neck and pulled, tightening around its neck. When the animal reared back and spread its wings, Striker took advantage of the momentum to pull himself onto the Hellvern's back.
"Easy, there! I'm your new master now!" the cowboy shouted over the Hellvern's angry shrieks, pulling the ropes tightly in the manner of reins. It wasn't that hard, as the Hellvern had already been tamed. Otherwise, it was like riding a giant version of Bombproof.
"Woohoo! Can we keep the Hellvern, dad?!"
"I already got enough with a Hellhorse, kiddo!"
Striker led the animal through the green inferno, eyeing the crazy robot going after Blitzo. Millie and Moxxie were shooting it, but it was far too fast for bullets. Striker couldn't contain an excited 'yeehaw' cry as he whipped the Hellvern forward and it snatched Robo Fizz right before it could run Blitzo over; the animal threw Robo Fizz into the air before eating it whole.
"Got a new mount, Striker?! Can I keep Bombproof?!"
"In your dreams, Blitz!"
They barely made it out of Loo Loo Land before it was consumed by flames, then made a run for it before anyone could identify them as the people who destroyed the place. Mammon would look for heads to roll before the day's end, after all.
*HB*
"Best… Day… Ever…" Jake laughed in-between exhausted pants as they got home that night.
Striker fell on top of the couch, groaning in exhaustion. "We're taking the rest of the week off, kiddo. If Blitz calls, tell him Bombproof has a cold or something like that, but I'm not moving from this couch."
Jake joined his father and snuggled against him. "Thanks for taking me to Loo Loo Land, daddy."
"I'd say 'anytime' if the park hadn't been reduced to ashes." Striker chuckled, eyes closed as he wrapped an arm around his son.
As Jake snuggled into his father's arm, he thought about what Millie had said back at Loo Loo Land about.. "Hey, dad?"
"Mmm?"
"Can I ask you something? "
"What?"
"Well…" Jake took a deep breath. "Do I have a mom? I mean, Millie has one, Moxie too, Blitzo… Even Stolas's daughter has a mom. I've never seen any pictures and you've never told me about her…"
Jake trailed off as he heard snoring. Dad had already fallen asleep. He must be really exhausted, Jake thought. I can ask him some other time. I'll let him rest for now.
Striker didn't open his eyes until he was certain that Jake had fallen asleep; then he carefully cradled his son in his arms and carried him upstairs all the way to his room. He carefully tucked Jake in as quietly as possible; Jake shifted a bit, but otherwise didn't look like he'd wake up anytime soon. Striker smiled as he stroked his son's hair.
It's not that he didn't want Jake to know about his mother. He wanted to tell his son about the wild-spirited, strong-willed woman that stole his heart. He really did. But he just couldn't find the words to explain what had happened to her. Just even remembering her was like adding lemon and salt to an open wound. Striker would tell Jake about his mother eventually, just not now.
The cowboy carefully placed the stuffed dragon he had grabbed from the shooting gallery in Jake's grasp, carefully leaning in to kiss the boy's head.
"Good night."
*HB*
Well, seems there's been a hint about Jake's mother. What do you think happened to her? I might go into details later on.

you should have listened to sunoo when he said that it wasn't a good plan to travel to a foreign country on impulse.
you wouldn’t say you’ve ever been the most courageous person in your life. determined to break that trend, you planned this super out of the blue trip without much thought.
yeah. maybe this was a bit TOO courageous.
you didn't comprehend what compelled you yet here you were, arriving at paris charles de gaulle airport.
you stared at the large windows of the airport, viewing the plane that you had just left.
the gate for the concluding passengers had been locked by the flight stewardesses.
one of the stewardesses obtained eye contact with you, before shooting a smile and lightly bowing her head.
you absentmindedly returned the gesture, mind elsewhere.
bustling throughout the airport were people hurrying to their connecting flight or slumping into their lover's arms
people carried two or more suitcases with various bags strapped on their bodies, nothing on you besides a petite sling purse and one small carry on suitcase.
as weaved your way through the mass of stressed travelers, you briefly thought to yourself
how the hell did you get here?
2 days earlier
clusters of kids outfitted in blue gowns and caps could be recognized a mile away.
the graduation from high school to university.
your friend minji encloses her arm around your shoulder, your arm resting on her waist.
minji’s mom was stood in front of the both of you, gesturing wildly as she tried to take the ‘perfect graduation photo’ as she had put it
"okay pose! get a little closer, perfect. 1, 2, 3"  your friend's mom counts.
the camera shudders which creates a beaming light to flash, eyes faintly twitching.
shrieks could be heard throughout the campus as girls queued up to take their final photographs with the popular guys.
minji's mom draws back the camera and we check the picture.
"it's cute," minji exclaims, peering at it a bit more closer. you nod your head in approval.
you would miss minji, one of the friends you could constantly count on in math class when you neglected to do your homework from binging korean dramas.
"i'll send you the picture later (y/n)! don't forget about me alright? you have my socials and you can always talk to me," minji grasps your hands
you smile, feeling sad at the departure of your best friend, "of course minji, don't forget me either"
"i could never," she brings you into a secure hug.
"sweet pea perfume," you say and she chuckles. sweat pea was minji's preferred perfume and you would miss that aroma.
"i have to go now, but i'll see you around okay?" minji says.
you could notice tears well up in her eyes and she fans her eyes to prevent the tears.
"don't cry ji, i'll start crying," you joked. "i live near here and you can always visit me! my door will always be open."
she smiled, "the same goes for you." her mother shouts her name before she has to go.
"alright, see you around," you wave to her as she leaves.
on the opposite side of the garden, your mom signals to you with your bouquet of red roses in hand.
"are you ready honey?" she asks you and you smile, nodding your head.
the car ride was in pleasant quietness, light radio music fluttering in. you had taken off your cap and laid it in the car seat next to you accompanying with your bouquet.
you had glimpsed outside to see your campus still arranged with your classmates, beaming and posing for additional pictures.
you bitterly smiled.
for the first time, graduation didn't appear like one of those liberating scenes of a movie,
1 day ago
you sprawled on his bed, staring straight up. a fan in your hand, fanning the perspiration that threatened to come.
your eyes match the fan's speed directly above your neighbor and best friend, sunoo's, bed.
his air conditioner was broken. with the avail of those elementary paper fans and the only fan stationed in the house, you were able to find comfort
you questioned if he ever got frightened of it dropping on him when he slept.
sunoo occupies the bathroom that's joined to his room, applying some light powder.
your mind strays, more thoughts simmering in the back of your brain. you sigh for the 10th time and sunoo being exasperated, allows out a loud groan.
it draws you out of your daze and you snap your head towards him."
"what is with you? what is on your mind sunshine?" he shuts his cushion, flinging himself on the bed.
"are you ever scared of the fan falling on you?" you felt the bed dip
"no, it's been like that for years, and don't change the subject. what's wrong?" sunoo retorted
"what makes you say that? i'm fine, " you answer
"uh-huh," sunoo rolls his eyes
it's the blatant eye-roll rather than the hushed one, he implied business
"you've been sighing for the past ten minutes, spill," sunoo says
of course, sunoo could recognize your distress. what sort of best friend would he be if he couldn't distinguish your emotions?
you huff, " okay then"
"i don't know why but i just feel stuck? i just graduated high school and nothing feels different, i mean it doesn't have to, but what do i do now? maybe i just watched too many movies"
sunoo tsked, " (y/n). sweetie, i graduated last year and i'm still stuck here. i do nothing besides go out or stay in my room. no in-between."
"but you have something sunoo. you have a bunch of your friends, you're an instagram star and i don't know, it's just different, "
it was accurate, sunoo was extremely popular. he had a bunch of friends and acquaintances from being the vice president.
sunoo inflated up on social media for his content from makeup to dance practices, a versatile instagram star.
you conceal your face with your hands before emitting a loud groan.
sunoo remarks, "i don't know how i can help you (y/n)? maybe you should try to rest a bit"
"easy for you to say, you, who isn’t dealing with a mid-life crisis, " you whine.
"this isn't a mid-life crisis, this is a post-graduation crisis which is totally normal. how about going out of town? obviously not to paris or whatever but maybe, what was her name again? minjoo's town!" sunoo suggested.
"obviously not to paris"
"not to paris"
"to paris"
"paris"
what about paris? paris was considerably away from your town and had a ring on the tip of your tongue.
you had sprung up, grasping sunoo by the shoulder and shaking him, "you're a genius sunoo! paris is a genius idea."
sunoo's eyes widen and he shakes his head while attempting to pry your hands off of him.
"no, you have to think rationally-"
you released sunoo from your hold which let him stabilize his spinning head.
"and i am! i need something new. being in this town for my whole life makes me realize, maybe i just need a spontaneous trip. "
your words scarcely blur together, adrenaline rushing through your blood as you understood this could jolt you out of your post-graduation slump.
"but-"
"no buts! pass me my laptop,"
present-day
you are currently disliking your choice, anxiety rushing through your veins, but it's too overdue to have other opinions.
you had landed in france and this was a life-altering moment; a chance of a lifetime.
peering nearby, you squint at the tiny english translations of the signs. you pull out your phone.
you open up the camera to see if zooming in would improve it for your eyes. as if on cue, your stomach rumbles vaguely making you startled.
you panicked as the pocket that was previously supplied with snacks became loaded with empty wrappers.
maybe if you would be lost in this wonderful city, you might as well try some of their famous pastries.
your muscles had retracted, the result of finally getting some movement after being restrained in a metal machine that was adjacent to the fiery sun.
you stumbled across this petite bakery and enter, sparingly bowing your head.
the owner was an older lady with her greying hair that designed it to resemble ashy highlights, pulled into a loose bun.
"que puis-je vous offrir?" she smiles.
"i'm sorry, i don't speak french?" you admit, embarrassed
as much as you assumed duolingo and rosetta stone could benefit you on a flight to paris, the only thing you could accomplish to say without messing up is "bonjour"
"that's fine mademoiselle! what can i offer you?" the lady shifts to englsih
you let out a sigh of relief, appreciative for blundering into this bakery.
"may i have your most popular pastry to go and a water bottle?" you smile, fishing out some euros.
you had looked down to the currency that you had exchanged before embarking on the plane.
"of course mademoiselle!" she says, reaching behind the counter and with her gloved hand, seizing a chocolate croissant.
"that will be 4.12 euros!" she rings you up in the cashier.
"is this the right amount? i'm not very good at counting euros," you revealed your hand where the money was.
she nodded her head and took the money, printing your receipt out. before giving you your receipt, she interviews you with a question that you weren't confident in answering"
"if you don't mind me asking, why are you here in france? not to sound rude! but i'm just curious"
you softly smile, sensing the kindness illuminating from her tone of voice. she wasn't rude at all and she was asking a simple question, but your brain struggled to obtain an answer.
"well, i would say i'm here to explore?  i just finished high school and life felt incomplete. my best friend jokingly said "go to paris" and so I booked a ticket."
you look back up at her to see her delicate gaze. the rustling of the paper bag stopped the moment of silence
"that's amazing mademoiselle! france is the city for that. you must visit the notre-dam cathedral while you're here, it's beautiful. and maybe even find some love?"
she winks at you and you engage with a small giggle.
just like the show "emily in paris," you could merely fantasize about living a life like hers but it was an altered universe. she was an employed woman and you; a fresh graduate from high school.
"maybe! but i'm not looking forward to dating right now"
it wasn't a lie nor the truth. you would love to date someone right now but dating someone from a foreign country with a language barrier? not the most desirable idea. the owner laughs, handing you your pastry and water bottle.
"thank you for dropping by here mademoiselle! please enjoy your time in france,"
"merci beaucoup" you stumbled out, providing a small wave out.
the airport seemed to be more crowded than before. slowly opening the wrapping, you take a bite of the chocolate croissant and let out an audible gasp.
unquestionably, one of the greatest pastries you have tried in your life.
you promptly pull out your phone, snapping a picture for your instagram story. it was an adorable picture with the bakery in the background with the chocolate croissant in hand.
with "just landed" as your caption, you posted it to your close friends story. almost a second later, sunoo request to video call you.
you were welcomed by a piercing shriek into the phone.
"YAH I WAS JUST GREETED BY YOUR PARENTS WHO SAID YOU WERE AT A SLEEPOVER FOR A COUPLE DAYS? SLEEPOVER MY FOOT? YOU'RE IN PARIS-"
sunoo screeches over the phone and you timidly grimace, turning down the volume as people begin to stare.
"sunoo, i'm currently in a public airport with no earbuds plugged in, can you please STOP screaming?" you whispered audibly to him.
"OH, I FORG- sorry," sunoo sheepishly responds.
"my parents would never let me go this far so i just had to lie that i was going to a sleepover at minji's house which is out of town. plus i'm only going to be here for two days," you consult him.
"you saw me buy the tickets sunoo. why are you scolding me now? shouldn't you have tried to stop me while i was in the middle of buying the tickets?" you added.
"well now i want you to come back, who am i supposed to hang out with for the next 2 days?"
though it was dark in the setting sunoo was in, you could practically see his pouting face.
"you could hang out with jake? or sunghoon? aren't they both your friends?"
jake and sunghoon went to the same school as sunoo and you're buddies with them. you've known each other since middle school but jake and sunghoon were always closer to each other just like you and sunoo.
"jake and sunghoon hyung are busy on a vacation together in the bahamas"
you stifled a laugh in, "good luck being alone for the next two days."
"not funny (y/n)! besides that point, what if you get caught?"
"don't worry, i won't get caught because you're the only one who knows about this .as long as you don't rat me out sunoo," you scowl at him.
"i won't, i won't, i promise but you have to buy me something? deal?”
you roll your eyes, "deal mr. sunoo-shi, i have to go now. i need to try to find my hotel"
"be safe, love you!"
"i will! love you too"
you sulk after the call ends. without your best friend on your side, you felt a little feeble and lost but it's not time to be pondering like that.
paris awaits and you couldn't linger at the airport the whole day.
first challenge
getting to your hotel was a struggling. wandering around a city with no basis of the language besides "hello" and "thank you so much", didn't do enough for you.
first, you had to find a taxi that could converse in english. most people had turned you down as you couldn't speak french.
thankfully, it was a fortunate day and you met this kind lady who had coffee-colored curly locks, gentle chocolate eyes, and light freckles scattered around her face.
"do you speak english?" you crisscrossed your fingers, your legs close to giving out after scrambling for taxi drivers
"yeah, i do mademoiselle! would you like to hop in?" she extended a friendly smile and you had never felt bricks lift off your chest faster.
she opened the back of the taxi and you scouted in, permitting your purse to lay on your lap.
the women examined both directions of the road, looking out for passing cars and entered the driver's seat.
"where are you heading mademoiselle?"
you swiftly pull out your phone to your notes, "hotel le walt paris?"
you corked your eyebrow, making sure it was the right name before she nodded her head.
"a very famous hotel huh? right near the eiffel tower. i recommend that you wait till it gets dark and sit on the balcony to see the eiffel tower with lights. it's beautiful"
you smiled at the kind words of the lady, "i will surely try that! thank you miss..?"
"elena! elena is fine and you mademoiselle?"
"i'm (y/n)"
"it's nice to meet you"
"likewise"
the entire ride, you felt at some peace finally conversing with someone who understood english,
after a 30 minute drive, you had arrived at your destination.
feeling a sad departure from this mellow woman, who turned out to be 19 seeking to make some pocket money in the summer, she was one of the first people that you had grown connected with throughout this ride.
"elena, though it was a short time, thank you for keeping company"
you present her with a warm smile as she unlocks the door for you. you exit the taxi, clasping at your phone.
"here, give me your phone."
you softly planted it in elena's hand. you were perplexed about why she showed you your home screen until you realized you had a password.
you enter your password, giving it back to her. she did a bit of clicking and you could see her hands typing something in before returning the phone back to you.
"that's my instagram, stay in contact with me alright?"
you felt the sides of your lips curve into a slight smile. you dragged her into a soft hug.
"thank you elena"
she visibly hesitant before easing into the hug. she softly rubbed your back.
"i have to go, i might get fired if i stay here too long"
you bided her a fare-well. thirty minutes was an extended time to get a know a person.
and that was the first friend you met in france.
second challenge
checking into your hotel wasn't as difficult. most people could speak english and besides the uncanny looks that you received from the clerk, check-in was pretty smooth.
"here you are mademoiselle" the bellman lowers your suitcase in front of your hotel door.
"merci beaucoup,"  you smile and he returns the gesture before leaving you.
you look down in your hand where you are grasping the card tightly. you scan the card against the door meter and it flickers twice.
red, green
the door clicks before you push on it and reveal your hotel room.
at first glance, your mouth dropped.
the hotel room seemed better than it did on the online photographs which was a rare possibility.
though it was a small room, it was renovated beautifully.
overhead the king-sized bed, there was an extensive painting of the eiffel tower. a blue chair that held a place directly by the bed along with a little wooden table.
the hotel was fine but you definitely weren't
"(y/n) shut down in,"
"3"

before thinking, you throw yourself on the bed having the jet-lag kicking in. the bag offers a 'thump' sound as it connects with the ground.
'ouch that hurt'
you fish through your pocket, pulling out your phone. it was hardly twelve pm and you were already fatigued.
what was your strategy? you were in france for two days and you don't have a plan to do anything.
first things first, you needed to sort out this jet-lag.
 1) taking a shower
showers are always a great way to awaken and could shake you from this daze. you endured a scream as your water turned to be ice cold. someone must be utilizing the hot water. that shower unmistakably woke you up
2) skincare
after getting out of the shower, skincare was the secondary way to wake up. cleansing with toner, dropping essence into the skin, and implementing a nice coat of moisturizer to lock-in.
3) fueling with food
food can beat anybody out of slumber if they're fueled with enthusiasm but you didn't have any food on you? that indicates it's time to go out and explore france.
unfastening up your suitcase, you drabble on what you can wear.
reconciling with a simple pair of denim shorts and a light pink tank top, you catch a fast mirror selfie.
being content with the ultimate product, you smile to yourself.
"phone, key, wallet," you whispered, securing the thoughts of having everything.
everything was arranged to go and it was time to tour paris.
third challenge
cruising through paris would be by notably the toughest challenge while you were here.
you had your phone to navigate solely with wifi and you couldn't be that favorable to be able to meet people who could speak english all the time.
you had entered a small restaurant, where you worked to communicate with people in defective french but they moderately understood what you wanted.
after that fiasco trying to order a chicken frricassee, you were able to appreciate your time there along with sending a picture to sunoo who reacted with,
"can that be the souvenir you bring back to me TT?"
you chuckled at the message, knowing typical sunoo, and finished up eating.
eating wasn't the one exclusive thing available in france. there were various activities but you were too afraid to venture any future for the hotel. getting lost too was easy.
that being said, eating after eating all you could do was roam around the city. it was around 2pm and you could spot a diverse crowd of people.
you could see kids. in uniforms that just got out of school or a cute couple that was experiencing their date.
you slightly squint and cover your eyes as the sun is at its highest point.
yes, paris was lovely and you would prefer to travel more but but you didn’ toriginally have a plan
for a couple of hours, you completed wandering around the area where your hotel is. you wished at moments like this that you would have jungwon, sunoo's friend, with you to help navigate you.
jungwon was also a friend you guys met in middle school but he went to your school. very mature for his age and great at preparation.
before you knew it, the sun had died down and it was time to retreat to the hotel.
'ah right! elena told me to look out at the eiffel tower as it gets darker'
you softly tread back to your hotel, observing the blisters at the back of your foot.
you could clearly sense the entire day of walking take a toll on your body.
you scan your key card and fling your bag to the floor as soon as you get inside. you open up your suitcase to change into suitable sleeping clothes.
you briskly cleansed your face and tied your hair back.
you had approached the balcony, guessing how to cautiously open the glass door.
you gradually shift the handle to the right and the door made a scanty creek. you gingerly put more stress on it, opening the balcony wide.
a distinct gasp could be heard from you.
subsequently taking a step onto your balcony, the frail breeze made you quiver in the long black tee that adorned your top half and the sweatpants that settled on your waist.
the balcony was small, barely able to move besides staying still.
you had peered to your right, glancing at the eiffel tower.
elena was correct. the eiffel tower was breath-taking at night. for the first time when landing in france, you could feel in harmony. below you was a crowded street.
it was only 8 pm yet you could feel your eyes droop as opposed to the bouncy pair of kids that ran through the moobs of people.
the radiant yellowish glow of the eiffel tower was able to save you from dozing off. you softly hum 'fly me to the moon,'
'fly me to the moon,' didn't have significance, it felt appropriate in the second.
you hadn't regarded it but a figure had gently peeked out of the other balcony, attentively listening to the silky melody that you were humming.
"nice song"
a voice interrupts and your humming had come to a halt, eyes widened.
you had turned to the origin of the voice and discovered the culprit
the balcony alongside you.
"thank you"
you glanced over, granting him a slight smile before he returns it.
"new to paris?"
he questioned, now you guys facing each other.
"yeah, just arrived this morning, and you?"
you asked before he softly smiles.
"not really, i've been here multiple times but the feeling is something i'll get used too."
you hum as a response
"how did you know to speak english to me? do i really act like a foriegner?"
you were growing more drowsy but this stranger was fascinating. who else could say they met someone and talked to them from a balcony romance?
"english song, random guess"
you nodded your head, not certain if he could see you but that was all you could muster up.
there grows stillness beside the bustling street below until the stranger breaks it.
"i know this sounds weird but since you're new here, would you like to go out with me tomorrow to travel the city?"
that question felt like ice water was just splashed onto your face. the proposal startled you.
the stranger didn't appear like a bad person. been to paris varied times, can acknowledge good music and good at conversation.
as much as this stranger flatter you, how could you trust him?
"as much as i would love to, how do i know that you're not trying to kidnap me, even worse, kill me?"
he stifles a laugh.
"hey knock it off, this is a very serious question, balcony boy"
you snicker, desiring to know the answer than anticipated.
"i promise you that i won't try to kidnap OR kill you. i'm just offering and you can even pat me down before we go out together."
this was by far one of the most peculiar offers you had received but this was THE stranger offer you came to france seeking.
you know sunoo would not advocate for numerous reasons and you can hear his voice already
"number one, dangerous"
"number two, dangerous!"
"number three, DANGEROUS!"
but sunoo isn't here right now. you chose to grab the opportunity. france had provided you luck today.
"alright then"
a moment of silence goes by before you hear him clearing his throat.
"you're serious right?"
he glances at you and your eyes lock. though you can't see that well due to the absence of light, you nod.
the eiffel tower gave you enough light that you could make our curious eyes, tall nose, fair skin that radiated in the soft lighting, and full lips that were curved into a smile
"i'll see you at the lobby at eight,"
next morning
to say you were nervous was an understatement, you were terrified. you agreed to a stranger who claimed to know paris like the back of his palm. you met him off your balcony and now you were agreeing to go a date with him?
"you must be out of your mind!" sunoo exclaimed through the phone.
"well yes i must have been at 8 pm last night when fatigue was hitting the hardest but how can i say no now?"
"i don't know maybe, I DON'T KNOW YOU STRANGER DANGER?" sunoo shouts
and like you foretold last night, sunoo was not a big supporter of this idea. over the course of fifteen minutes, you had been continuously scolded by him.
you cringe, " sunoo, i promise that i'll be fine. i just need you to help me pick out an outfit"
sunoo rolls his eyes, "what are your options?"
though sunoo wasn't supportive of this, he couldn't let you go on a date without style.
you held up two choices; a blue floral dress that settled to your mid-thigh and a pink tennis skirt with a white cami shirt.
"well do we like this guy or do we like LIKE this guy?" sunoo questioned.
"what- well i literally met him last night? so i don't even like him, we're just going out for this one day since he offered"
"uh-huh, then the blue floral dress, it's hot there right?" sunoo says
"super hot," you groan.
you glance at the time, 7:00 am.
"i have to start getting ready sunoo, i'll update you later alright?" you smile
"alright, try not to get killed but have fun too! love you"
"love you too," you say back before hanging up.
you quickly hop in the shower and make sure to not take too long.
doing skincare, putting on the outfit, and spraying a little bit of perfume, you are ready to head out the door.
one last check to make sure you have all the things.
7:58 am
you quickly head down to see several people in the lobby.
a bellman, a pair of teenage girls who seemed like they were dragged here, a couple around the mid-40s trying to check-in, and a teenage boy that rested on one of the lobby seats.
it was evident who the balcony boy was but you just called out to be safe.
"balcony boy," you say.
the teenage boy that was seated turns around before flashing you a smile.
"miss singer,"
you airly chuckle at the nickname.
observing him in person was a lot different. you could see his long body proportion, bright eyes, sharp jawline, with fair skin that complimented his rich brown hair.
a distinct experience from seeing him on the balcony.
"i'm (y/n)! and you?" you ask
"i'm lee heeseung"

Take me Home, Country Roads
A Writer Wednesday Story
Pairing: Jack ‘Whiskey’ Daniels/GN! Reader
Word Count: 2,313
Warnings: Mentions of Jack’s late wife, but this is entirely fluff
Permanent Taglist: @phoenixhalliwell @star-wars-hell
You and Jack had never had an easy relationship, but it all seems to be coming together now. Especially after you and him decided to have a kid via surrogate. The only issue? Your daughter is nine hours away. I guess this calls for a road trip.
The prompt for this week’s Writer Wednesday was given, as always, by the lovely @autumnleaves1991-blog.
Tumblr media
“Baby,” Jack shook your shoulder, making you groan and roll over in bed. “Baby.”
“What?” You said slowly, sufficiently cranky after having been woken up before the sun rose. The clock over Jack’s shoulder read 2:37, and you really wanted to hit him. Why the hell were you awake?
Jack kissed you, and you had half a mind to bite him for waking you up so damn early. “Daniels,” you said against his lips. “You aren’t winning yourself any points with me right now.”
“Mhm,” Jack hummed. “C’mon. We have to go.”
“Go?” You sat up, rubbing your eyes. “Go where?”
One of Jack’s old shirts was tossed in your direction, and he smiled. “We’re picking Frankie up today.”
Immediately, you felt giddiness fill your stomach as you jumped up, suddenly very eager. You passed Jack, the both of you going about your morning routines in a very rushed way. Today was the day you and Jack were going to drive from your house in Texas all the way out to the middle of New Mexico to pick up your newborn daughter, Marie Francesca Daniels.
It was nearly three in the morning by the time you were ready to go. Jack yawned, filling a travel mug with coffee and handing you your own travel mug. “Do we have everything?”
You nodded. “Car seat is in the car already,” you said, checking the items off your fingers as you went. “Diaper bag was packed yesterday, I have that audiobook downloaded, you have the address in your phone, and I just packed snacks.”
Jack smiled, kissing your forehead. “Are you ready?”
“No,” you admitted. “But at the same time, yes. I can’t wait to have her here.”
“I can’t either,” Jack reassured. “C’mon, we have to hit the road.”
Despite the early hour, you didn’t sleep at all in the car, opting to instead listen to the audiobook you had picked and relax, watching night darkened landmarks pass you by. Exhilaration kept your eyes as open as they’d get until breakfast, and you paid half attention to the book while Jack drove beside you.
Nine and a half months ago, you and Jack had sat down to have a very serious discussion. Did you want kids or not? Jack had, obviously, said yes, but after the catastrophe that was his late wife, he was hesitant. You were in a similar boat. Kids would’ve been nice, especially considering your ranch house was built for a family, but the process of having kids was something you could never see yourself doing. So after much discussion and a few angry nights, you and Jack found a surrogate. She wasn’t that far away, and she was super sweet. The three of you had met once, to confirm the pregnancy, and all of you had cried. Since then, her health had been well and steady, and last week she’d given birth to your baby girl. She was named after two of Jack’s great grandmothers, one from his mom’s side and one from his dad’s.
The sun rose earlier than you expected, peering over the hills as Jack continued westward. The hospital in New Mexico was nearly nine hours away, meaning you wouldn’t even reach it until a bit past noon, and you wouldn’t be returning home until well after nine pm. But you didn’t mind, not for this.
Nearly four hours into the trip, at 7 in the morning, Jack found a relatively healthy place to stop for breakfast. He walked in and got two bagels while you sat in the car, texting the surrogate. She had just woken up, and was almost as excited as you and Jack were for today.
“Whatcha doing?” Jack asked, getting back into the car and handing you a paper bag with your bagels in it.
“Texting Jackie,” you said. “She says Frankie is doing a-ok, and is eager to come home with us.”
Jack smiled. “Still can’t believe you let me name her Francesca.” He handed you your bagel, and you grinned.
“We made a deal,” you said. “You could name her Francesa as long as it wasn’t her first name. No matter what, I knew we’d be calling her Frankie.”
“We can call her Marie when she’s in trouble,” Jack said, leaning in close and giving you a kiss. “Thank you.”
“For what?” You asked, laughing as Jack trailed his kisses down, tickling your skin with his facial hair.
Jack smiled, humming against your skin. “For letting us have a baby.”
“Oh Jack,” you murmured, abandoning your breakfast so you could turn your full attention to your cowboy husband. “I wasn’t ever going to stop you from raising a family. Ever.”
“I know,” Jack reassured. “What do you think about having another one? That house has room for three or four.”
That brought a huge smile to your face. “Jack,” you said seriously, humor tinting your voice. “Let’s focus on one for now. We can revisit this conversation in two years.”
Jack pouted, but accepted, leaning back so he could eat his bagel and get back on the road. You ate slower than Jack, absorbing the audiobook you’d started playing again and enjoying seeing all the passing land outside the car.
A few more hours into your trip, and you were bored out of your mind. The book was super good, and you kept trying to focus your attention on that, but nothing could kill the boredom that was building in your chest.
“What time is it?”
Jack sighed. “Ten minutes since the last time you asked,” he said, taking your hand and kissing your knuckles. “It’s about ten thirty.”
You groaned. “Fuck,” you said, dragging the word out. “I’m so damn bored.”
Jack chuckled. “My laptop is in the back if you want to screw around with that solitaire program.”
It was better than doing a whole load of nothing, so you grabbed Jack’s laptop and set it up on top of your thighs. “Am I even allowed to use this?”
“Why wouldn’t you be allowed to use it?” Jack asked.
“What if I uncover some big Statesman secrets,” you said, logging in regardless. “What if I destroy the world?”
Jack smiled. “You cannot destroy the world from my laptop,” he reassured. “Not that one, at least.”
“This one?” You looked up, surprised. “You mean to tell me you can destroy the world from a laptop you own?”
Now Jack was full on laughing. “Yeah!” He said. “My work laptop. It stays at work though.”
You made a face. “Well that’s boring,” you decided, clicking on a solitaire game. “When do you want to grab lunch?”
Jack shrugged. “According to the GPS, we’ll get there a little after noon, so what do you say to eleven thirty? That way we have time to eat and stuff, plus the car won’t smell.”
It seemed reasonable to you, so you nodded. “Sounds good,” you said, sliding down in your seat and beginning a forty five minute long solitaire tournament with yourself.
“Babe,” Jack said softly after you finished the tenth game, nudging you. “Take a look at this.”
You shut the laptop off and looked up, immediately feeling yourself gasp. Outside the car was a sight you wished you could experience forever. The road stretched on as far as you could see, empty except for you and Jack. The sky was a beautiful picturesque blue with only the barest clouds, none of which dared block the sun. The earth was a gorgeous orange dirt, striped in various shades. Ahead of you stood a few mesas, breaking up the flat expanse of land. It was perfection, and you couldn’t help but pull out your phone to snap a picture.
“It’s beautiful,” you breathed softly. “Absolutely beautiful.”
Jack smiled. “There’s a small town ten minutes from here,” he said. “We can stop to grab lunch, and then it’s only another half hour until we’re there.”
You looked at Jack, surprised. “Was I really playing solitaire for that long?”
“Yes you were.”
Lunch ended up being from a food truck, considering that was all you could find in the middle of nowhere, New Mexico. When you got out of the car, you immediately groaned, stretching your legs out and feeling your back pop.
Jack smiled, grabbing his hat. “Feeling okay over there?”
You shrugged. “I’ve been through worse,” you decided, looking around. “This place is so cool.”
“Reminds me of where I grew up,” Jack said, putting his arm around you. “Although my hometown had more grass and less sand.”
While you two ate at a small picnic table, you texted Jackie, telling her you were only half an hour away. She responded with enthusiasm, and you sent her the picture you took of the landscape.
The final leg of your trip was very quiet. The audiobook had finished, and neither of you wanted to break the delicate silence in the car. Well, silence was relative, considering Jack was humming John Denver while he drove, but you didn’t mind.
When you finally pulled into the hospital parking lot, you had trouble getting out of the car. Inside that building was your baby, your little girl. When you looked over at Jack, he looked just as nervous as you. “Ready cowboy?”
“Ready,” Jack confirmed, taking your hand. “Let’s do this.”
Finding the room wasn’t hard. A very sweet nurse led you to Jackie’s room, and you stared at the door for a solid minute before knocking.
“You’re here!” Jackie said, smiling as Jack opened the door. “She’s been an angel for me all morning.”
You nodded, unable to speak. Wrapped in a soft blanket in Jackie’s arms was your baby. You and Jack had both seen photos, but it seemed nothing would compare to the real thing. Jackie stood, still holding Frankie. “Do you want to hold her?”
Jack stepped forward, and Jackie put Frankie down in his arms. Jack smiled, cradling Frankie close to his body. “Hey baby,” he said softly. “It’s me, your daddy.”
Jackie stepped back, towards you. “He’s a natural,” she whispered to you.
You nodded. “Thank you so much,” you said. “I don’t ever think I’ll be able to thank you enough for what you’ve given us.”
Jackie smiled. “I’m just glad I was able to help you two.”
After nearly half an hour of sitting and waiting, you and Jack both holding Frankie, a doctor came around to release her. He checked your daughter over and deemed her okay to leave, and the four of you all walked out together. Jackie waved and smiled from her car as she drove away, rolling her window down to give you one final goodbye.
You got into the driver’s seat, looking back at Jack, who was settling Frankie into her car seat. “How goes it back there cowboy?”
“Got it!” Jack said triumphantly, smiling and kissing Frankie’s head. “Sleep tight baby girl.” He closed the backseat door and got into the passenger seat. “Still can’t believe she’s ours.”
You smiled, taking his hand. “We have a daughter.”
Jack nodded, his eyes watering. “A daughter,” he said softly.
By the time you were half an hour away from the hospital, it began to feel more real. Every so often, Jack would check the backseat, finding Frankie asleep every time. She slept soundly, and you almost recommended Jack do the same. He’d been up since really early, and you could tell he needed rest.
Two hours towards home, you realized that would’ve been disastrous.
Frankie started to cry, and almost immediately, Jack looked at you. “What’s going on?” He asked, eyes wide. “Is she okay?”
You nodded. “She’s probably hungry,” you said, carefully pulling over and putting the car in park. “Her bottle is in the diaper bag.”
Jack took a breath and nodded. “Okay,” he said. “I got this.”
He got out of the car and picked Frankie up, carrying her to the front seat with him. “That’s it,” he said softly, grabbing the bottle and beginning to feed her.
You smiled, grabbing your phone to take a picture and send it to every single one of Jack’s coworkers who you had contact with.
“What are you doing?” Jack asked, barely looking up at you.
“Giving Tequila sufficient blackmail,” you said with a smile. “And showing Ginger her new niece.”
Jack made a face, laughing when he looked back at Frankie and found her copying his scrunched up face. “Aren’t you just a little troublemaker?” He said. “I know my mama can’t wait to meet you, bumblebee. How’s that sound? Wanna get spoiled by your abuelita?”
You couldn’t help but smile at that. “Jack,” you said. “Put Frankie back in her car seat, I have to keep driving.”
“Can I hold her for a bit?” Jack asked, looking up at you with his pleading puppy eyes. “Please?”
Taking a deep breath, you sighed. “Fine,” you said. “But only for a little bit.”
Jack smiled, twisting a bit so he could get himself buckled back in. As he did so, you turned the radio on, dialing the volume down a bit.
You drove like that for a bit, with Jack cradling Frankie in the front seat. He hummed along to the radio, rocking Frankie as he hummed. Finally, the cursed song began to play, and Jack lit up.
“Almost heaven, West Virginia. Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River. Life is old there, older than the trees. Younger than the mountains, growin' like a breeze,” he sang along softly with John Denver, and you smiled, turning the radio up a bit. Jack continued to sing, putting a gentle lull over the car as you continued your drive home, your tiny family of three comfortable and together at last.
“Country roads, take me home, to the place I belong. West Virginia, mountain mama. Take me home, country roads.”

rocking chair pt 2
"Where are you heading?" Link asked as he watched his girlfriend get dressed. It was her day off and recently all she wanted to do was stay home and sleep, as she was nervously anticipating their sons arrival.
"A meeting." She responded, running a brush through her unkempt hair.
"Not that there's anything wrong with it, but you've been going to a lot of meetings recently. Is everything okay?" He asked sitting up on his elbows in their bed.
"Yeah, I mean I'm nervous for the baby and all. This whole time I was thinking if I can just make a healthy baby it'd all be fine, but that's not where it ends, you know?" Link nodded his head in agreement, the whole length of her pregnancy so far he'd been a nervous wreck, which was very uncharacteristic of him. "And my friend Louise, it's her first time going to meetings in a while and she lost her sponsor, so now I'm her sponsor I guess."
"That's good." Link smiled, admiring his girlfriend. "Be careful though, I don't want you overexerting yourself. We don't want our little guy coming too soon."
"I'm not going to overexert myself." She sighed, her boyfriend was very protective of her since they found out about her pregnancy. It was comforting for Amelia since she didn't have that the last time, but it was also stressful having him breathing down her neck every other minute. "I'll be home after dinner." She smiled as she went back to kiss him before she left.
________________________________________
"I promised." Link sighed throwing down his screwdriver to his side.
"I doubt she'll even notice if it's an IKEA chair." Meredith rolled her eyes as she sat on the picnic bench in her backyard. Link had asked if he could use her yard, so he could surprise her with it, and she wouldn't see him struggling.
"I promised I'd build her a rocking chair, I want to do this."
"You may want to, but can you actually do it?"
"I can." The man huffed as he looked back on the blueprints he drew up. "If I can put bones back in place for a living I can definitely build a rocking chair."
"Whatever you say." Meredith smirked as she took a sip of lemonade.
"Are you just gonna sit there or are you gonna help me?" Meredith seemed to consider this and assured him she was going to be no help and walked back inside. He then picked up his phone and clicked on the contact he was looking for.
_______________________________________
"Three donuts already." Louise sarcastically said as she walked up to the snack table after the meeting.
"And what is that your third coffee?" Amelia playfully bit back, as she wiped her face of the donut powder.
"Want to head down to the coffee shop down on the corner?"
"Oh so I can watch you drink coffee and I'm stuck with hot chocolate."
"Precisely." Louise smiled, the pair then walked down the street in the light rain. Once the two were sat down at the booth in the coffee shop and had ordered them had started up with conversation again. "So how are you feeling?"
"Hey, I'm your sponsor. I'm supposed to be asking those questions."
"You were pestering me that whole meeting, I should get a chance to check in on you. Is Atticus still bugging you?"
"He's just so restless." Amelia ran her finger over the rim of her mug. "I just want to sleep and all he wants to do is prepare."
"Roles seem reversed." Louise smirked, bringing the mug to her lips. "He's nesting and you're hibernating."
"I guess. I'm just nervous."
"Have you voiced your concerns to him?"
"I mean, he's really understanding. He accepts my grief revolving around my first son, but he just doesn't get I just need to be left alone. He's just breathing down my back alllllllways."
"Last time, you were all alone. This is different now, your baby's father is with you." Since the two had started to talk, they immediately clicked and felt comfortable in confiding in one another. "It's normal to feel like that. Have you asked him to back off."
"No I haven't." Amelia sighed playing with a hangnail on her hand. "I want this relationship to be different. I don't want lying to protect the other people, and I don't want resent him eventually. He's just sooooo happy, and all he wants to do is take care of me. I just want to be  left alone and to do things for myself."
"You know what you need to do. You just said it, you've got to be honest."
"Why do you always have to be right?" The neurosurgeon groaned, before starting to ask the latter questions in how she was doing.
________________________________________
"And your an orthosurgeon really?" Winston asked as he sawed a piece of wood. "And you can't construct a simple rocking chair?"
"Okay, okay, I get it I’m a failure is it out of your system yet?"
"Yeah just about."
"How did you learn how to do this?" Link asked as Winston helped him hold the pieces of wood steady as he hammered.
"My grandfather. He loved to build, he was the only relative disappointed when I turned out to be a surgeon and not a carpenter." The younger man chuckled.
"He must've been devastated." Link sarcastically remarked, the more time he spent around his girlfriend the more sarcastic he became.
"What made you think you could build a rocking chair?"
"Not really sure. Amelia said she wanted me to build one, I think she knows I can't really do it. I've been doing little DIY projects and now she likes to tease me so at first I thought this was a joke, but then realized she was serious."
"I think it's really amazing y'all are making it work, you guys seem to really love each other." Winston smiled, he had just reconnected with Maggie and couldn't believe how fast he was falling for her. He wanted to see if what he was feeling by was possible, he saw these two fall in love so quickly but didn't know if it was out of obligation.
"I know what it seems like, I'm staying out of obligation but it's not like that. I love her, she's the only person I've truly truly loved." Link smiled uncontrollably, he couldn't believe he was this guy, the hopeless romantic and the soon to be father.
"I didn't mean it like that. It's comforting to see, because I'm falling for Maggie so quickly it doesn't even seem real. So if it happened with you and Amelia, I don't know gives me hope."
"I honestly never really believed in love when I met Amelia. From what I've experienced so far, love just kinda happens, there's no timeline it's just, what ever happens, happens you know?"
"Whatever happens, happens." Winston repeated, smiling at the thought, it was oddly comforting.
_______________________________________
"Looks great. You did a good job." Winston congratulated as the two admired the chair in Meredith's backyard. They had been working on it for a little over a week and had finally finished. "Ready to bring it over?"
"Yep!" Link smiled proudly. The two loaded the rocking chair into Winstons car, hence it being bigger, and secured it and made their way to Links apartment. The two brought the chair into the apartment surprised to see the lights turned off. "Amelia?"
"Did she say she was home?" Winston asked as they set the chair down into the nursery.
"Yeah, she did." Link walked out into the hallway, and check the bathroom and bedroom. Link then went to the front door, after hearing a knock. He quickly opened it expecting his girlfriend. "Oh, Louise. Hi."
"Amelia called me earlier and asked me to come over."
"Did she say why?" Links nerves staring to rise.
"No, just asked if I'd come over."
"Huh." Link moved to the side to let her in. "I just got home and she isn't here. What did she sound like on the phone?"
"I mean she seemed a little shaken up, but I wasn't concerned."
"Huh." Link sighed as he walked over to the kitchen table and picked up his phone to call his girlfriend, and was surprised when Maggie barged in.
"Maggie?" Winston was surprised to see his girlfriend run through the door.
"Where's the fire?" Link asked feeling his anxiety start to bubble.
"Oh umm, to see the cat." It was obvious Maggie was lying, and Link assured her that was a bad idea before she even spoke. "Amelias at the hospital, she's having contractions. And wanted me to grab the hospital bag."
"Amelia's having contractions? It's too early." Link had begun to panic, he ran back into the nursery and grabbed the bag. "Why didn't she call me?" Maggie stopped him before he exited the door.
"I don't know, it's early they've got her on terbutaline to try and stop contractions."
"How couldn't she call me?" Link asked hurt, and jumped when an arm met his shoulder.
"She's just scared. She's not trying to shut you out, you know that." Louise comforted, and Link nodded assuring he understood. Amelia confided in him the other night about how this pregnancy scared her and wasn't used to someone being there for her. "When you go to the hospital don't freak out."
______________________________________
Amelia wiped the gel off of her stomach. Carina had just done a final scan before letting her go home. They were able to stop her contractions and now she was on modified bed rest. The door than abruptly opened, and Amelia felt her heart drop. It wasn't that she didn't want to tell Link but she was panicked when the contractions started and didn't know what to do.
"Link. I'm so so so sorry. You see I thought they were just Braxton Hicks so I called Louise, and then I was like oops these aren't Braxton Hicks. So then I went to the hospital and Maggie saw me and then she offered to get by bag, but my contractions have stopped and I'm not gonna over exert myself and it's all gonna be okay." Amelia quickly ranted, but was immediately comforted when her boyfriend engulfed her in a hug. “I'm sorry I didn't call you."
"Don't apologize." Link whispered as she rubbed her back. "Don't be sorry. You were scared, this is new for you. But I'm here, we're in this together."
"God, I love you. Anyone else would've been so pissed."
"Well I'm not anyone else." Link smirked.

Class 1-A Game Night Headcannons
Here’s a lil somthin that popped into my head.
Tumblr media
∘₊✧──────✧₊∘∘₊✧──────✧₊∘∘₊✧──────✧₊∘∘₊✧──────✧₊∘
Yuuga Aoyama
This boy has no shame
They could never beat him at Just Dance or Twister he’s just too bold
They could never let him and Mina play against each other on Just Dance they were dancing till they dropped.
TWISTER ohh boy y’all know his pose right? Once he does that he automatcally wins everyone else is wayyy to embarrased to continue.
Mina Ashido
Just Dance QUEEN
She and Aoyama battle in Just Dance
One of the best people to sit next to in Uno
Sometimes they just play Life just for fun but she always wins. She has a whole family, a car, a house, and a whole lot of money
She totally stole everyone’s money
Tsuyu Asui
She normally likes to play calm games that won’t end friendships *cough* UNO *cough*
She could totally own everyone in Clue, she just knows your tells.
She always comes in third in monopoly, she knows what to do with her money and how to properly spend it.
She says “Sorry” in Sorry
Katsuki Bakugo
UNO.
Don’t play with this boy, and if you do, don’t sit next to him. One of two things could happen
1. You get PLUS 2′d and 4′d a bunch of times or at least until someone reverses it.
2. They could be plaiyng with the “7, 0 rule” and you get a hold of his arsenal deck and just have a whole lot of plus 2′s and 4′s you just kept looking back and forth from your deck to him
One time Hagakure thought it would be fun to play with jumbo cards you sat there lookin like:
Tooru Hagakure
She is in charge of game nights
If there’s a game they want to play they’ll have to talk to her first
She has all the games ready for next week, sometimes she asks Momo to make an extra copy of cards
If they play mafia and she’s the murderer she always wins, you could never tell if she was the murderer. She could be smiling and they would never know.
Watches all the chaos go down during Uno
Tenya Iida
Monopoly.. oh boy
Takes his money very seriously, he always wins no exceptions
If you land on his properties yes it’s plural you gotta pay right then and there
Run out of money?
Don’t ask Iida he can and will make you pay interest.
Supervises Uno he knows what that game does to people
Kyouka Jiro
Does that thing where you only move the controller in Just Dance and still manages to get 5 stars
She ain’t sorry in sorry
She could win Clue as the murderer if she just keeps her straight face the entire time
Jiro is not the one to mess with in Uno you plus two her, she will stack that hoe
She would totally have music playing in the background
Denki Kaminari
MARIO KART AND SMASHH
Does that thing where a blue shell is coming and you back up into 2nd place
They can’t beat him at those, with the exception of Sero and Kirishima they could beat him and Mario Kart if they tried a bit harder
Bakugo wipes the floor with him in smash
Totally asks Hagakure to put more plus 2’s and 4’s in the deck to watch the chaos unfold
He could never win clue as the murderer if you ask him the right questions he will get nervous avoid eye contact and start laughing
Could never win Monopoly he always gets in jail, he’s in there so much they just made him a little jail box
Eijirou Kirishima
Hypothetically speaking if you had a Wii he would be BOMB at the wii sports games
Y’all remember those?
If you play tennis with him your not making a point on him, it’s like he’s a different person
If you’re on his team... you’re exercising whether you like it or not
Casually throws blue shells at Kaminari
No one has the heart to plus 2 him in Uno
Bakugo did it once and everyone yelled at him
Kouji Koda
Like Asui he doesn’t like friendship destroying games
You could NEVER get him to play Just Dance, Twister, or that heads up game
Loves Monopoly! Until Bakugo needs money..y’all still lookin for those games pieces
Basically any game that is calm, and doesn’t require him to talk much he’s down for
Izuku Midoriya
I like to think he had little game nights with his mom therefore, he will most likely win.
Uno? He sits across from Bakugo he knows.
He asked Iida for money in monopoly and came in dead last.
He’s a pretty fast learner so he’s the only one who could keep up with Kirishima in Wii sports.
Blue shelled Kaminari and laughed
Because of him everyone knows why the game was called “Sorry”
They once played Jeopardy but with hero questions... He got all the points
Minoru Mineta
Oh honey oh honneyy
He’s banned from Twister.
He’s surprisingly pretty good at clue
Brings popcorn to Uno
Got plus 38 in Uno
He’s fun to be around if he behaves
Mashiroao Ojiro
HES TOO NICE
He will never plus 2 anyone, even if it’s his last card
If someone lands on his property in Monopoly he just apologizes to them
Says sorry in “sorry” like Izuku
He gets concerned for his classmates in uno
Shocks him how one card could ruin friendships
Rikidou Satou
Candy Land
Despite the way he’s built he’s good at Jenga
Never wins Twister he’s too big
Bakes snacks for game nights, lil muffinss, lil cupcakesss.. YES
He knows the power of the plus cards
Bribes everyone to stay calm with cake
Hanta Sero
MARIO KARTT
Him and Kirishima are usually neck and neck throwin red shells at each other
Taped Mineta to the wall when he was bein a perv
Pretty decent at Twister cause of his long legs
hides the get out of jail cards from Kaminari
He could win Uno without using plus cards, he just sits next to the right people
Mezou Shouji
Doesn’t really play that many games
He doesn’t participate in Just dance or Twister
Everyone had to teach him how to play certain games
He prefers to watch everyone play UNO and make sure Bakugo doesn’t explode the table
Could easily win clue, even though his mask hides his face it’s completely straight
Shouto Todoroki
Okay I know I said Shouji doesn’t play many games but this boy?
HE HAS NEVER PLAYED ANYYY
Every time someone suggests a game he’s like “what’s that?”
They had to teach him how to play EVERYTHING
One time Izuku needed 500 dollars in monopoly and this precocious baby wired him 500 monies..
Uno. They can’t do anything to him they would just feel so bad, with the exception of Bakugo of course he regrets nothing.
Lil bonus- He finally wins a game of uno and goes: “As Y/N would say: ‘Suck on that.’ “ He says it so calmly
Everyone is startin at him before you go “They grow up so fast”
They looked at you like:
Tumblr media
IM SO SORRY SKGKSH
Fumikage Tokoyami
Dark shadow...
He’s banned from UNO he’s a little cheater
But JENGA?
He’s the champ, dark shadow helps him find the best places so he usually wins
He’s also pretty good at battleships
Since dark shadow is his total opposite anything Tokoyami is not down for he’s gonna do
You’ll never catch him playing Just Dance. Ever.
Hagakure once thought it would be fun to play poker (no bets of course)... when I tell you Dark shadow PLAYED DIRTY
He would always win and since he and Tokoyami are attached they both won every round
Tokoyami is down to play Uno he thought it was a harmless card game.
Until he saw the raw power of the plus cards.
He never thought he’d see so much madness that was caused from one card
Dark shadow totally eats Mineta’s popcorn
Ochako Uraraka
I like to think her parents held little game nights to keep her mind off of the financial issue they were having
The best person to hang out with during games night hands down
Comes in second in monopoly she’s an expert on saving and spending money
Y’all remember when the had the little aurora thing goin on after her internship? Yeah that’s her in Uno
Don’t test her she’s locked and loaded
Will do Just Dance but she’s not as competitive as Aoyama and Mina
Loves playing “Life” she thinks it’s cute and simple
Momo Yaoyorozu
Helps Hagakure plan game nights
Makes extra Uno cards to shuffle plus 2’s and 4’s in the deck
Class 1A mom will not hesitate to break up a Uno fight
Loves the game “Life” even though Mina steals her money
Brings tea for Satou’s treats
She’s really good at battleships
Really good at clue she knows the right questions ask, and thier tells

Crowley x Reader. We Met Before. P3/7
Summary: You end up living with Bobby after your parents die. You go to church and meet Priest Crowley and you end up getting along (if you know what i mean). A few years later when Bobby passes you move the the bunker with Sam and Dean and end up meeting Crowley again.
Part 1  Part 2  Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 Part 7
Warnings: Mention of loss, Spelling mistakes, you go to church?
Around 2500 words.
Let’s Get Coffee.
“Yay thank you” You yelled heading up the stairs to get changed…
Training went well, although you didn’t really do much. Bobby who was still reluctant helped you to shoot inanimate objects and some basic hand to hand combat with no weapons, because in his words “you won’t always have a weapon on you so that’s the best place to start.” You are pretty sure it’s just because he is buying time before the brothers come into town so they can deal with the more athletic training. Not because Bobby wasn’t good, he was but he was quite impatient and not the best Teacher.
Time Skip to the Next Saturday Night brought to you by Juliet.
The last week consisted of a few training lessons here and there, you were starting to get really good with a gun, and to Bobby’s ‘luck’ he did some blade training and you actually weren’t half bad. Right now, you were eating takeaway, 8pm, on the sofa with Bobby watching some old tv show.
“So kid, Winchesters are coming round tomorrow. Want me to pick you up from church to save you walking so you can see the two idjits sooner, I know you miss them”. He said emphasising miss in a teasing manor.
“Oh yeah soo much” You replied rolling your eyes. “But no, I’m good, I’m actually going out after for some coffee”.
“So, you and Lena finally meeting outside of church?”
“Nope”
“Wait so who are you meeting with then? A new boyfriend of yours? If so, I want to meet him first.”
“What? No, I’m not completely sure, just a group of us meeting up after church.”
“What do you mean you don’t know. Who asked you? That old woman that lives next to the church because if so, I wouldn’t go she will just talk everyone’s ear of about her cats”
“No, the Priest actually just to share ideas about the bible after.”
“Right well err have a good time?” He replied unsure
“Thanks Bobby I’m gonna head up now and sort everything out and go to bed”
“Don’t use up all my water, I’ll see you after your coffee, call me if you want a lift.”
“will do, night”
“Night kid.”
*Beep Beep* Your alarm read 8:30 Sunday. You go up and got showered and dressed. You opted for an outfit which made you look good but it was still simple and casual, whether you were trying a bit harder because you were seeing Crowley or because the boys were coming you wouldn’t say. You grabbed an easy snack and decided to take the scenic route as you had 30 minutes to get there and you didn’t want to wait around. You arrived exactly at 9:32 and waited a few minutes before walking in, no sign of Lena anywhere, strange. Your seats however remained empty, so you sat once again on the seconded row back. Just as you received a message.
Lena- Sorry my mums not feeling well so I’ve had to take my brother to football. Hope service is good.
(Y/N)- No problem, have fun at football.
You replied before muting your phone and sliding it away just as Crowley came out.
“Good Morning…………………………………Thank you all for coming. Bless you all and I shall see you next week.”
Looking up at the clock reading 10:30, everyone stood up and headed out the door, you however being unsure of where you were going for coffee waited at the end of the pew, letting other passed. You didn’t really focus on the topic at hand but hoped you could blag your way through the teachings of rich man and Lazarus. As everyone left Crowley once again was behind you smiling.
“(Y/N) how are you?”
“Hi, I’m good thank you, how are you doing?” you reply, once again you feel strangely flustered.
“Better now that’s over and we can go get coffee.”
“Oh yeah about that where are we meeting?”
“I was thinking the little café down 3 blocks over. Small and easy to find a table.”
“Mrs Wolowitz’s?”
“Yes, That’s it”
“I think I know the way; well you better go, and I’ll meet you guys there” You say about to head off.
“I’m sorry love, you must be mistaken I meant just the two of us. If that’s alright”
“Yeah no sorry that more the fine, I just assumed.” You stuttered out. You hadn’t meant to jump to a conclusion but that seemed more likely then just you two going out for coffee. Alone in a small café. Damn it (Y/N) stop thinking again.
“Do you want to follow me in my car? In case you get lost?”
“Oh um.” You awkwardly laughed. “I actually walk here so I’ll get it up on my phone”
“No, no don’t be stupid you’re going in my car.”
“I wouldn’t want to intrude”
“No come on let’s go.”
The car ride was short and pretty much silent but not awkward. You were nervous but also happy you weren’t going to be stuck with a bunch of old Christians arguing about meanings. Before you got out the car, he took his clerical collar of leaving him in a normal black shirt. You got out, got a table and ordered your drinks, and reluctantly allowed Crowley to pay.
“So, Y/N how did you find todays service?” Crowley asked looking straight at you for an answer.
“Oh um, it was good” you replied suddenly feeling nervous and unsure of how to answer. You were sat in a café, with an attractive Pastor whose stare seemed to go straight through you.
“Anything to add? Any views on the passage?” Crowley said seeming slightly distracted.
“Not really no. Sorry maybe you start an idea and I’ll add?”
“I don’t really have any either, well to be honest with you I would rather get to know you then your views on the bible.”
“Me?” you smiled, this just got better now it’s apparent you probably aren’t going to be sat discussing the bible over the next half hour or so.
“Yes you” he replied a small smile resting on his lips.
“Well what do you want to know?” you didn’t really know what sort of thing to tell him so thought it best to just ask.
“Well how about we play a game?”
“A game?”
“Yes, a game, you know an activity one engages in for fun?” his smile turning slightly into a smirk.
“Oh, thanks I didn’t know what a game was, what sort of game?”
“I ask a question and you ask one back?” he paused “if you would like, if you wanted to sit around and talk about bibles, we could ask biblical ones”
“No normal questions are fine; you can start since I don’t know what games are” you say sarcastically.
Just then the waiter came and delivered your drinks, nodding his head slightly at your companion before he left. You took a sip of your drink as Crowley moved on; this wasn’t what you though this evening would be but it’s definitely an improvement.
“If you could go anywhere in the world where would you go?”
“(Y/A) {your answer}”
“Why?”
“It just seems perfect. I could see myself walking around and just admiring everything there you know?”
“Well hopefully one day you’ll go.” Crowley took a sip of his steaming drink and returned to looking at you. Really looking at you, it was weird, like he was genuinely interested in what you were saying. “I’ve been a few times and I must say the {landmark} is beautiful to visit.”
“One day I will see it, anyway you seem like you’ve been to loads of places where have you been?”
“Pretty much everywhere, I do enjoy travelling.”
“wow, I wish” you sigh out.
“Do you travel?”
“Not really, when I was younger me and my parents would move around America but that stopped a while ago.”
“Oh, how come?”
“They died so I moved in with my godfather and haven’t left town since, I know if he could we would go but he needs to stay here for work and everything and now I’m blabbing on again sorry.” You said it more as a fact mentally ready for the normal oh I’m sorry and what happened and are you okay to come.
“No don’t apologise I’m interested and I’m sorry to hear about them but your godfather sounds like a good man, and maybe one day you can travel again, maybe even the world, what do you plan on being in the future?”
“Definitely the plan, and I’m not sure yet. What about you have you always dreamed of being a pastor?”
“No, definitely not. I’m only a substitute pastor anyway if there’s such a thing.”
“what do you do then when you’re not?”
“I guess you could say I’m a businessman, I mainly make deals and such.”
“oh, is that why you always travel?” You say looking down at your drink and sipping.
“Exactly why my job requires a lot of popping to places. Now if you will humour me, I’m curious, you go to church but don’t seem completely religious, is that so?”
“What do you mean?”
“I don’t mean to offend you, but I notice you zoning out during teaching and you just seem… I don’t know how to put it.”
“Well if I’m honest I’m not sure about it really. The whole believing in God thing. I mean I’m sure he’s there, but I don’t think there’s much he can do.”
“So why go?”
“Well my mum used to always take me and well it makes me feel closer to her, I’m sorry if that offends you.”
“Not at all, not at all” he said a slight smirk on his face again.
This was weird, not in a bad way but weird. As the time passed, he started to become even less like a pastor and more like a friend. You continued sharing random stories finding out how he grew up in Scotland and all about his random like and dislikes. He was a nice guy and you no longer felt nervous. Time went by and you both ordered another drink. Now your cups were sitting empty and you were discussing what the best era would be to live through, when your phone beeps.
12:51
Bobby: Hey, hows the discussions going, what time do you think your going to leave I dont know if I can deal with them alone any longer and theyve only been here 3 hours as it is.
You: oh, sorry I didn’t realise the time, um ill finish my drink and leave soon. Tell them I say hi.
You slid your phone into you pocket and looked back up at Crowley. Wow you had been sat talking for over two hours.
“Everything okay?” he asked
“Yeah everything is fine just didn’t realise the time. Sorry I’m going to have to go in a minuet I have guests over and completely forgot.”
“No problem, would you like a lift back?”
“I can walk it’s fine.”
“Please at least let me drop you of at the church, I need to pick up some things there anyway.”
“Okay.”
With that the two of you got back into his car and arrived back at the church both getting out and standing in the completely deserted parking lot.
“Thank you for the lift, and the drinks.” You smiled checking you had everything and looking up at him.
“No problem I had a good time, and maybe if you would like I could get your number and we could do it again sometime, get to know each other a bit more, maybe over some food.”
If you didn’t know any better it would sound like a date offer, in fact part of you wishes it had been but pastors don’t date, do they?
“Yeah sounds good today was fun.” You grab your phone pulling up your number.
“I’m sorry that may not have been clear enough” he said looking at your phone and entering your number into his. “I was referring to going out on a date.”
“But you’re a priest?” you blurt out before thinking. Mentally slapping your head.
“A substitute priest love, and like you I don’t hold religion too close to my heart” he said chuckling and putting his phone away.
“Well in that case that sounds great. I better start heading back but text me.”
“I will, safe walk home, if you’re sure you don’t want a lift.”
“I’m sure, goodbye Crowley”
“Goodbye Y/N”
And with that you left. What just happened?
*Times Skip Home*
You walk through the door into the lounge greeted with the boys and bobby drinking beers and talking, coming to a halt when you walked in.
“Y/N, hey how have you been” Sam asks looking up at you smiling. Before you could answer Dean butted it.
“Y/N Bobby here tells us you’ve been out talking about the bible, please tell me you haven’t it’s like half one.”
“Nice to see you to Dean, and no I haven’t I met with a friend. I’m great thank you Sam, how are you?” you reply going to sit down before realising a pair of legs in the way. “Deans move your legs”
Reluctantly he swung them over the coffee table allowing you to sit down.
“Good thank you” you’re not sure if Sam would have continued but bobby spoke up.
“A friend? You said you were meeting with a group of you, lying, now are we?”
“what? No, I just got a bit confused we were going to talk about the service but we got distracted. But what’s more important is what you two have been up to.” You reply casually leaving out the fact you had spent the last two hours with a male and had half planned a date.
“No, what’s more important is you are 18. And we have something for you.” Sam said poking his head around Dean.
“Sammy’s right Dean said pulling something out his duffle bag. It was neatly wrapped and slightly battered around the edges. Sam definitely wrapped it.
“Guys you shouldn’t have.” You said unwrapping it. At first you saw a leather-bound book. It was bound with a rope wrapped around and decorated with a light house on the front.
“Open it up (Y/N/N)” Sam said.
Unwinding the rope, you opened it up to find postcards and pictures from the boys, all in Sam’s writing.
“We, well I thought you could have a journal to note down anything you want its always good to have one. The postcards and stuff are from each of the places me and Dean have been. We knew you wanted to go, and you always want to here stories so I thought it would be a good way to make it seem like you were there.”
“Sam it perfect thank you so much.” You stood up and hugged him before taking a seat back down noticing Dean had a scruffier package in his hand.
Accepting it and opening it Dean began.
“I’m not as thoughtful as Sam but I saw this, and thought would like it.”
It was a rope necklace with a stone on the end. Under the stone was a small piece of card with a handwritten message explaining the stones properties of protection and healing. You read it and put it on twiddling the stone in your fingers (You can change stone to your liking).
Tumblr media
“It’s beautiful Dean thank you very much” you say leaning over to hug him.
“I’m glad” he says pulling back smiling.
The evening goes on, you order food and joke with each other, Bobby leaving to go to bed and the three of you falling asleep sprawled out on the couch and armchair around 11pm
Wow that was long and mainly build up, but don’t worry romance will be in the next one.  I hope you enjoyed this though, thanks for reading.

Once Bitten, Twice Stupid prt 191
191
Lance spent every moment he could before they left making sure the house was cleaned from top to bottom, then bottom to top. The nursery had gotten his blood flowing again, Pidge roped into playing delivery person for him as he fixed up his garden, mulched and pruned, then scolded himself over spending so much money. Then there was Pidge’s birthday party that they’d nearly missed as Lance had let the days of the week slip by. If it hadn’t been for Hunk, they would have been fined a hefty present tax, and had Pidge teasing them for the rest of their lives. The party was small, games and alcohol, Lance trying to do the catering, while Hunk tried to make sure he got in and did everything that needed to be done before Lance could do it. Moving felt better than sitting still. Keith letting him work until he was too tired, then would force feed him as he put him down for a nap... from which Lance would wake up and find himself cleaning again.
Deep cleaning the house felt good. Keith putting up with hanging the washing out, then bringing it in. Everything from the linen cupboard hit with vinegar washes to kill any mould particles that thought they had a right to make themselves at home. The only room to escape was Matt’s and Rieva’s, as they were entitled to their privacy, and Rieva was being fussy over how many hours he was spending on his feet. He’d been banned from cooking by her, and even having to get up to pee earned him a scowl over being on his feet. She’d smacked when he’d tried to mow the lawn, pretty much chasing him back inside and forcing him to leave his precious lawn half mowed. He was an old man robbed of his pleasure as far as he was concerned. Sure, he was plenty sleepy during the day, but once he’d been stung with cleaning bug, it left him feeling useful, and being outside meant he didn’t have to listen to Rieva scolding Keith for letting him do too much.
Honestly, when they’d left the house for their trip, the only thing he was sad about was leaving Blue and Kosmo behind. The pair seemed to think that his cleaning was for their benefit. They’d taken to playing in the middle of night, which spilled over into Blue less than ceremoniously waking them by jumping on Keith’s head as Kosmo barrelled up the bed to get to her. The pair thick as thieves and Blue not afraid to use her humans as a convenient escape. The drive was something like 6 hours, with Keith being on edge over how he’d react to being in the outside world again. His ego putting Lance’s ego on edge, leaving them having a spat just as they’d put their bags in the back of Lance’s bronco. Lance had faith that Keith could do this. Keith had anxiety gushing out of every pore by the bucket load. When Keith snapped at him, Lance had snapped back twice as hard.
This led to a very tense first hour of driving. No radio. No snacks. No talking. There were plenty of snacks packed. All the snacks and drinks within hands reach sat on the backseat. Hunk had baked cookies, and sent along a bag with them, that they were absolutely not allowed to open until they reached the hotel. Their planned six hours seemed so long, until they reached the first unplanned stop on their trip. Keith pulling in at a service station, Lance knowing instantly that his boyfriend had to know he needed to pee. Even when they fought, Lance knew Keith still had his best interests in mind.
With breaks in almost every small town they passed through, Lance felt like he’d peed his way half way up America. They’d stopped for lunch at a kind of backwards diner off the main road. The food greasy, the milkshakes icy, but the company made up for it. Being alone with Keith felt soothing, despite the shaky start. He didn’t have to adult. He didn’t have to run around after anyone. He didn’t have to worry about the tiny flecks of dust that seemed to have it their personal mission to settle almost immediately after he’d dusted. All he had to worry about was Braxton-Hicks contractions that worried him a whole heck less now he’d been through real ones, their twins spinning summersaults, and Keith’s terrible choice in music... that’d he’d never admit to secretly loving, especially when Keith would seem to forget he wasn’t alone and start singing along.
Seeing Keith smile, and having his whole attention sent Lance’s ego into some kind of blissful state. His scent filling the car, accidentally, as he found himself getting horny from watching Keith be so happy. Keith teasing him as he pulled off the main road at the first available chance, for some very awkward car prepping in which Lance got a leg cramp and Keith smacked his head on the sun visor. It then progressed to out of the car sex, Lance lost in bliss all over again at the feeling of Keith’s hands over his skin as his head swam, drunk on Keith’s scent. He hadn’t known what he’d missing, or maybe he had, and that’d contributed to him discovering that he didn’t mind Keith biting his neck, or nipping at his nipples hard enough Lance was sure he’d end up pierced by Keith’s fangs. He’d been so caught up in cleaning, that being intimate had slipped the last few days. He’d become such a slut for Keith’s undivided attention that he could have purred contently, like a fat cat whole stolen a whole bottle of milk for himself.
He hadn’t told his boyfriend, but he’d packed to play a girl depending on the kind of town it was. He looked female enough to pass. No fake chicken fillets were required to fill out a brallet anymore. He’d packed a wig, and a dress, kind of embarrassed over both, yet willing to face the embarrassment if it meant making the trip easier for his boyfriend. When they’d climbed back into his car, Keith was all smiles as Lance curled into him, ignoring his own rules over seatbelts and sitting properly in a car. He didn’t need to fear his car rolling over, not with Keith behind the wheel, plus leaning against Keith meant kisses on the top of his head as Keith drove, Lance unable to offer to drive thanks to no longer fitting comfortably and a new fear that they would crash and he’d lose the twins if his stomach impacted against the steering wheel. This was really nice. Just a vampire and his werewolf boyfriend off on a life changing trip, and some alone time, until they were party crashed in a couple of days by humans. Yeah. It was nice.
    *
The hotel was a piece of shit and Keith hated it. The town he’d once apparently called home, now verged on some kind of city. The sign in boasting a population of 3000 people, though you wouldn’t know it with sheer amount of people at the hotel. Kids were yelling as they played in the tiny pool in the centre of the U-shaped complex. Parents yelling at their spawn. Their room was upstairs, and the bedding so basic it made his bedroom look fancy. For a hotel boasting about being the only one in town, they had nothing to boast about. Every noise seemed to drift right and through their room.
Late to check in, Lance offered to go in, Keith shaking his head at the offer. He could totally handle one 2 minute interaction. Said interaction blowing out to 20 minutes, with far too many questions asked. No. He wasn’t there on a get away for Easter. No. He didn’t have kids. No. He didn’t have a wife. Yes. His eyes were an unusual shade of purple. He didn’t know what the old man behind the check in counter got from his interrogation, but he was lucky Keith didn’t snap with how tired he was. He didn’t blame Lance for the numerous stops they’d made, but he did think that maybe they should have split the drive and found somewhere to camp overnight, with less fucking people around.
Coming waddling out the bathroom, Keith noted Lance had packed his own robe. His stomach on display, with the looped belt sitting just below his breasts. Their room was so “Lance-esque” that his boyfriend blended right in with brown shag pile carpet, khaki bedspread and orange flowered wallpaper. Being Lance, his boyfriend had fixed the dripping shower, instead of simply complaining to management. Keith annoyed his boyfriend didn’t care that the hotel wasn’t great. He was certain he’d heard more than one couple doing the do well into the hours of the morning when normal people should be sleeping. Hell. He should be sleeping. All the scents and sounds, coupled with a boyfriend hogging the blankets had made for a long night.
Seeing him watching, Lance shot him a smile. Opening his arms, Keith made straight for Lance. The vampire chuckled as he kissed Keith’s hair
“Come on, it’s not all bad”
“It’s not all that good either”
“I know. It’s only for a few days”
“This place is awful”
“It’s not getting a good Yelp review, but it’s not completely horrendous”
This was no place for his pregnant mate. A budget hotel room with a TV smaller than Lance’s laptop, and way too many people
“How do you think this isn’t horrendous?!”
“Because you’re here”
Lance’s sincere answer made him splutter, Lance chuckling at him as he kissed his hair
“I know it’s not what you expected, but it’s not forever”
“There’s so many people...”
“I know. It’s a lot for your senses. Why don’t you take a shower? We were both too tired last night, and I want to go get something decent to eat. Maybe find you some coffee?”
Coffee sounded good. Showering sounded like too much effort, but after tossing and turning all night, it’d feel good to feel clean of their bedding
“Okay...”
“Don’t take too long though. Your kids are seriously craving pancakes and I might have to stab someone if I don’t get them soon”
Keith gave a weak chuckle, not at all looking forward to the outside world
“We can’t have that. Get dressed and I’ll be out in a bit”
The shower ran out of hot water halfway through. Keith kicking the wall tiles hard enough that he cracked the tile that took the main impact. Not that he felt bad about in the slightest. When he’d been on the streets, even a place like this would have been heavenly. Now he’d gotten used to being pampered by Lance and the niceness of Platt. He’d been spoiled. He shouldn’t be expecting city niceties in a backwards town like this.
With a towel barely bigger than a hand towel around his waist, Keith walked back into the bedroom to find Lance had gotten dressed. He’d stumbled to a stop as he stared at his boyfriend. Lance was in a dress. An actual flowy white dress. A wig of long brown hair flowed down past his shoulders. Catching him staring, Lance sighed at him
“Don’t look at me like that”
“Like what?”
“Like you’re confused. Our friends might be okay with me being pregnant, but I don’t want people making assumptions and being rude as fuck”
They could go fuck themselves sideways as far as Keith was concerned. Lance was Lance. Lance didn’t love wearing dresses and hiding himself... He shouldn’t have to, either
“You dressed like that for me? You didn’t have to...”
“It’s fine, babe”
“But you’re a man...”
“Who’s currently pregnant and just wants his pancakes in peace. Besides, I like to think I look cute”
He did... but it was so freaking weird. Lance was Lance... and now he suddenly had a girlfriend in place of the man he loved
“You always look cute, but I don’t want you to be uncomfortable. I don’t want you to feel you have to hide away”
“I know. Look, I figured it’d be easier for these poor country folks. Or don’t you like it? I mean, I can change, but I’m okay for now... more importantly, you know that’s the bath mat you’ve got around your waist, right?”
No. Why hang it up if it was meant for the floor?! Keith’s cheeks flamed, scrambling for an excuse he pathetically replied
“It does the job”
Lance could only shake his head at him. Keith feeling that was fair
“I did pack our towels. I thought you’d like something more familiar from home. I just didn’t think to grab them”
Lance meant he hadn’t thought to grab them as he rushed off to vomit. Keith copping both the wet noises and the scent. Neither making him feel all that good about their “holiday”
“I’m going to get dressed. Please tell me you’ve found where we can get coffee?”
“As if I’d make you wait for coffee. There’s a restaurant not far from here”
Thank god for that. He had no idea how this was all going to work, or when they’d be finding his dad’s grave. Now that they were here, he didn’t know how he felt. Yes, he was glad to be there with Lance. But at the same time, everything outside the confines of their crappy room scared him. Logically no one would recognise him. Not when anyone who’d last seen him had seen him as a little kid, but he still feared it. He feared someone from the past coming up to him to say “Oh my god! Are you Keith? I remember when your father died...”. He didn’t want to be remembered. He didn’t want the awkwardness or pity from some stranger. He didn’t even know if he wanted to stay in town long enough for Curtis and Shiro to join them. He did know he wanted to find the shack he’d called home... but even then, he didn’t know what he’d do when he did. All of it felt too much, but all of it would bring some kind of closure. That was if he listened to Lance... Lance who was annoyingly right more times than not. All he could do was hope that he was strong enough to see this through, and that Lance would remain by his side, no matter how he might react.

Glancing at the clock on his bedside table, the bright red number shone brightly in his room. Reading the number on the clock, he groaned, 2:19 in the morning rolling back over to stare at the ceiling once again. Sleep wasn’t coming easy tonight, if he was honest with himself, it didn't most nights, not since he left for Brazil six months ago.
The one thing that always sent him soundly to sleep was a twenty five-hour flight away. The twelve-hour time difference didn’t help as he knew it was two in the afternoon in Japan, also wasn’t a thing, they were a person and as much as he wanted to hear her sweet voice that always soothed him yet, he knew that she would be in a lecture right now.
To Toru Oikawa home was not a place, it was a person. That person was his highschool sweetheart. The girl that stood by his side no matter what, whatever the outcome of a game, she knew his true self, the one that wasn't this popular arrogant pompous prince facade he put up to protect himself. She knew the side that was a little broken, the side that doubted his abilities as a person and as a setter. The one who would stay up late into the night after she would listen to him whine about Kageyama or Ushijima so she could bring him freshly made milk bread the next day. The girl who would scold him for pushing himself too hard and hurt his need once again. The girl who asked him to teach her how to play volleyball and the rules.
The adventurous spirit he feels in love with that would try and convince him to join in her passion for adrenaline-filled adventure and sports, she would often scare him half to death when she happily run and jumps off a sixty-foot cliff into the sea, he could hear her excitable scream as she plummeted into the water to below. He was sure that she would be the death of him. His mind flashed back to the time they were at a cliff that was known that experienced rock climbers would visit and climb the wall, before they had gotten together, it was probably one of the moments he realised how much he was in love with her.
“Y/n, seriously what if you fall doing this and get yourself killed?” he asked as he nervously watched her walk along the base of the cliff her climbing sunglasses hid her e/c eyes, but he knew it held an excited glint as her fingers ran over the crevices, she would often grip them and try with footholds to see if that way was an excellent place to start. “Your parents are against this, you know this!"
"And you know I would do this either way. If it goes wrong and I die then no one can tell me off, and if it goes right then they’ll never need to know!” She grinned at him making sure her hair was tied tightly before her hands dipped into her chalk bag hanging from the belt loop on the back of her shorts before clapping them together removing the excess dust and began the climb. Toru spent the whole time at the bottom freaking out, she would often stop to work out where to go next or re-chalk her hands where they were beginning to sweat. When she was 3 quarters of the walk up the cliff face, he climbed up the footpath to the top to meet her. When he made it to the top. There she was already sitting down on the grass looking over the view in front of her.
“Hey Ru,,” She leaned her head on his shoulder as he took a seat beside her, the sun was low in the sky, nearly setting.
“You scare me so much with your love for adrenaline you know that right?"
"Sorry, I just love the rush,” She murmured quietly so as not to disturb the peaceful setting of the sun, as they sat there. It was the little things like this that he loved, just watching the sky turn from blue to have orange, yellows and reds dusked the sky, with the girl he loved resting her head against his shoulder, even if only half an hour ago she had given him heart failure, he knew she would never stop with her the love for adrenaline-filled adventures.
The ding from his phone brought him out of his memories, picking it up he was a text from her.

She was right, he would often get out of practice when she would have been asleep, but she was scrolling through youtube or Tumblr and sending him random things to laugh at or smile at when he gets back to his phone.
My king of the court 2:49am
Want to have a chat? (⌒‿⌒) xxx
not even a second later, the screen flashed up with the contact picture for her. He loved that picture. It was her looking over the sea, her hair blowing in the wind and a surfboard under one arm. The red and white striped bikini hugged her body with a pair of red booty board shorts.
He ran his finger over the green answer button as he held it up to his ear.
“Hey, my lil daredevil.”
“Hey king of the court, I miss you.” Her sweet voice seeped through the speaker of the phone, and he sighed in contentment. It had been six months since he had seen her, held her in his arms, heard her voice in person, and it broke him. They both knew this was going to be heard being nearly eleven thousand miles away from one another, they couldn’t just drop everything and be by one another’s side like they used to be. Toru already felt incredibly guilty for the fact he couldn’t be with her for her birthday and Christmas was only three weeks away.
“I miss you too, my love. How was your lecture?”
“It was good, we did lots of things about knees and how to help them when they are in pain, so I can help you more now.” He loved the fact that she had taken sports therapy as a minor subject, so she could look after him, her major was anthropology. He still wasn’t sure how she managed to worm her way around the board to have these two subjects that really did not correspond at all with one another, but she did. “What did you want for Christmas?"
Y/n was known to get her Christmas shopping done early. "You?~” He questioned with a laugh, “I jest baby, as much as I wish we could spend Christmas together, but you know I will love anything you get me, so surprise me."
They continued to chat for a while before Toru finally yawned.
"I better try and get some sleep,” He yawned again,
“Oh, before you go, I won’t be able to talk for the next day or two. I have a huge essay due in a few days, and I want to get it done."
"Of course baby don’t worry, good night lil daredevil, I miss you, and I love you loads."
"Sleep well, I miss and love you too, my king.” He hears her blow him a kiss over the receiver before they end the call.
“Still no clue?” Y/n looked up and in front of her was her classmate, Tetsuro Kuroo, he was leaning against his car with his hands shoved into his pockets.
“Nope, not any clue at all!” Y/n laughed as she walked towards him. “Ready?“ She grinned and nodded, jumping into the passenger seat as they took off for the airport.
A whole Twenty-five hours later, Y/n arrived in Rio, the heat was intense, she was glad that she was wearing shorts and a tank top, somehow managing to drag her two huge suitcases, with smaller ones on top, next to her she waved over a taxi and gave the drive Toru’s address. Her arms leaning on the open window as she watched the scenery outside it was stunning, she could see the emerald blue sea in the distance. The drive wasn’t too long, and she knew that when she arrived at his apartment, he would be at practice till late this afternoon.
Stepping out of the taxi, she was met by Toru’s landlady who grinned at Y/n, she knew she was coming, they had constantly been communicating for the past three weeks planning and keeping the secret between them Y/n flying to Brazil was a surprise for the love of her life of course. Paying the driver, she followed the sweet little lady to Toru’s flat. She pulled out the master key and pushed the door open. Y/n couldn’t help but laugh at the state of the flat, she apologised to the landlady who was shocked at the state clearly didn’t know what her boyfriend was like, he usually was pretty tidy, but training seemed to be keeping him so busy. Waving goodbye to the landlady, dragging her suitcase in the bedroom before setting to work on cleaning the flat, she had about eight hours to get this done. Grabbing his washbasket, she began collecting his clothes up that were strewn across the bathroom floor and sitting room, she put a wash on, hoovering, polishing the whole apartment before moving on to cleaning the bathroom. She washed the windows before moving into the kitchen which was the worst room of them all, dirty dishes, glasses, mugs, pots and pans all over the place. Once everything was clean, Y/n grabbed the spare key from the hook and headed to the local shop to get the ingredients for his favourite snack. While she waited for the dough to raise, she changed her top to a cropped loose front tie kind of floral wrap.
Eight a clock rolled around, and all Toru could think was coming home and get into the shower, he knew his apartment was a mess, but right now he didn’t care, and he was off tomorrow so he would do it in the morning and he would finally be able to speak to his Lil daredevil after she has spent the last day and a half doing that essay of hers.
"Olá Toru.” His kind landlady greeted him with a light knowing smirk on her face.
“Olá Beatriz.” He smiled at the little old lady, shrugging off her smirk, before sending her wave, watching her turn back around and continue to tend to the flowers outside the apartment block as Toru trudged up the steps to his apartment. As he neared his door, the smell of his favourite treat-filled his senses, it smelt just like Y/n’s. He must be craving it so much he must be imagining the scent of milk bread now, he tried to bake it himself, but it always seemed to go wrong or not taste anything like Y/n or his mums for that fact. He sighed sadly as he unlocked his door and pushed it open, to be greeted by a clean apartment. His jaw dropped as he stared around his apartment, wondering who the hell broke in and cleaned his apartment. The sound of water running made his head flick to the doorway of the kitchen. He slowly walked towards the sound, the smell of milk bread getting stronger as he approached.
A heavy thump caused Y/n to smile to herself before turning around, finding Toru standing in the doorway, his mouth opening and closing like a goldfish.
“Welcome home Toru.” She gave him that loving gentle smile, in a flash he had her wrapped up in his arms off the ground, peppering kisses all over every bit of visible sink he could causing her to giggle.
“You’re here,” he mumbled, burying his face in the crook of her neck, continuously kissing the spot taking a deep breath in finding her smell the same as always, that sweet peachy smell.
“I’m here baby,” she cupped his face in her hands, planting a delicate kiss to his lips, “Go have a shower, you reek and by the time you get out the milk bread will be ready.” She pushed him away giving him a slight slap on his arse as he walked out the kitchen, jolting at the contact laughing, but as he got to the doorway, he glanced over his shoulder making sure he wasn’t dreaming, that she really was here, wearing a cute like apron her hair tied in space buns as continued to wash up the utensil she had used making his favourite food.
“Make sure you get those sweaty clothes in the basket please.” Waving the wooden spoon, she was washing up at him with a pointed look.
“Yes, ma'am.” He saluted with a cheeky grin before heading off to the bathroom, gym bag in hand. He put his sports kit and clothes in the now-empty hamper, he smiled, finding the clean teal blue towels hanging on the railing, clearly, the ones that Y/n had brought with her. He was still in shock that Y/n was here in his kitchen, she had cleaned his whole apartment and was making his favourite treat. He didn’t think he could love her more than he already did but in that moment he just fell more in love with her than he ever has.
Clambering out of the shower, he headed towards the bedroom where he found Y/n rather immense suitcases on one side. How long was she staying? Those two cases along with the two smaller ones most likely had all her belongings in. He pulled on some boxers and shorts before he wandered back towards the kitchen, rubbing his hair with the small hand towel.
“You moving in or something, with those suitcases baby?” He joked as he stepped through the door.
“Yep~” She replied, popping the p, as she got the milk bread rolls out of the oven before shutting the door with her foot and placing them on the cooling rack that was on the table, she watched as Toru took in a deep breath as he smelt the bread he seriously missed this.
“Brilliant!” He laughed, taking a seat at the table before he clicked that she wasn’t joking as he suddenly all but yelled: “Wait, what?!”
“I have transferred to the University of Rio, and I start after the new year. I’m here to stay, I’m not going anywhere, I’m not leaving your side again.”
He just sat there gawking at her, did she really just drop everything in Japan to be here with him. “You didn’t drop everything in Japan just to be here with me, what about your parents or your friends?” Removing the apron, she placed it on the counter before leaning against it, facing him with a smile on her face that just reminded him that she really didn’t have a care in the world.
“My parents, as you probably guessed, we’re kinda against it, but they know that once I set my mind to something I’m going to do it, and my friends are your friends, they know how rough we have had it the last six months, we both have barely slept. We got so used to sleeping next to one another that sleeping alone doesn’t cut it. You are my home Toru so wherever you are, as long as I am with you I am home.” She walked around the table placing her lap as she draped her arms around over his shoulders, gently caressing his fingers against the bare skin of her hips, he had missed the smoothness of her sink under his fingers.
“You’re my home too baby,” He replied, kissing her with so much passion before pulling away, “Are you sure about this?"
"Yes Toru I want to be with you, and if it means being here in Brazil with you or in any other country I will always be by your side, I can do Anthropology anywhere, and I am studying Sports Therapy to look after you, and we both know that’s why.” Placing a kiss on his forehead, she watched as his eyes flickered around her own to find any kind of regret or lies. “I’ve missed seeing my king on the court playing volleyball where he belongs, and also this."
He couldn’t help but chuckle as she gestured to his toned naked torso with a wink, he had become even more muscular and defined in the last six months. Toru wrapped an arm around her waist as he hooked the other under her legs, hoisting her up as he stood up and headed towards the bedroom.
"Toru?!” She squealed her arms tightening around his neck instantly, knowing what he was planning.
“Now, now that’s not what you normally call me~” He smirked as he threw her down on the bed, she rolled her eyes.
“What about the milk bread?!”
“That can wait, I have something much more appetising in front of me .” He smirked hovering over her, his head lowing to nip at her sweet spot, eliciting those sweet sounds he loved and missed so much.
That night was the first time the pair of them slept better than they ever had in six months. They were home, back in one another arms where they belonged and where they always will be from now on. Together, Y/n had brought her one-way ticket home, and that is where she will stay with him, it didn't matter where they would end up on this planet just so long as they were together.
Home.
He was hers and she was his.

The Marvelous Misadventures of One: S. Marvin Argentum Ch. 1: To County Kerry and Back Again
Summary: Marvin goes to clear his head, and gets caught up in a huge conspiracy in the process.
A/N: *side eyes at the recent Techno and Quackity lore* I saw it, and I’ll address that loaded but fun character development it another time. I don’t have Dream in jail . . . yet, maybe . . . so fortunately so I don’t have to adhere/spoil it too closely.
Chapters: 1, 2, 3, 4
Marvin relaxed a bit, as much as he could, into the train seat he was in. His train was traveling from Althone down to his mom’s home in Kelly’s Bay, Ireland.
He’d lost his mask and cape long before he got to the train, and he felt very exposed and uneasy without them. The long scars down his face on display for all to see. But he was going to distance himself from everything that had happened recently.
Fortunately he had nine hours to nap and think. His phone was silenced, except for emergency calls. This would be the start of a time for meditation and reflection.
And it was, for about two hours.
“Marvin?”
The mage did everything in his power not to jump or startle. But when he looked over to see Ghostbur materialize right next to him, he just about launched himself out of his own seat.
“Fook!”[1] Marvin cursed.
“Oh sorry,” Ghostbur held up his hands in apology. “I didn’t mean to startle you, I just wasn’t sure it was you at first without your mask.”
“How the fook[1] did yeh[2] find me?” Marvin hissed, trying to keep his voice down.
“Well I followed you and Average to the station,” Ghost admitted. “You looked really sad and lonely, so I figured I should keep you company.”
“Ghostbur,” Marvin tried to keep his voice down and his anger obviously. “I’m tryin’ ta get away from the heroes. Not brin’ it with me.”[3]
“Yes, you mentioned that, but I just wanted to keep you company,” Ghostbur told him. “Toms was lonely when he was sent off and I didn’t want you to be lonely.”
Marvin was about to snap back that being lonely with his thoughts was the whole point, but at the mention of Tommy, or “Big Man”, and about some more pieces of what had to have been a very tough period in Tommy’s life he decided not to.
“Yeh sure Tommy won’t mind yeh bein’ here with me instead ‘a with him?”[4] Marvin asked.
Ghostbur looked at him hands, “Tommy has Tubbo and Ranboo and . . . Tommy likes them more.”
Feeling like that hit him a bit too personally, Marvin sighed. “Fine, yeh[2] can come with, just make sure yeh[2] don’t tell people who I am.”
Smiling, Ghostbur perked right up, “I won’t, I won’t, I promise.”
Ghostbur more or less kept his word. He meandered up and down the train and they reached County Kerry. Ghostbur was enthralled by the nearby sheep fields. He would lean over the fence and feed them. His sheep companion field often trotted by his side. The farmers and dogs weren’t too keen on him, but the sheep seemed to adore Ghostbur.
One rental car later, Marvin slipped into a petrol station to grab some snacks. No one seemed to recognize him anymore, which Marvin was eternally grateful for.
The ghostly young man was floating next to Marvin as he was in the back grabbing some drinks. He was floating upside-down.
“Mar— uhh, mage I don’t know, uhm,” Ghostbur immediately corrected himself.
“What?” Marvin sighed, closing the fridge door a bit harsher than he needed to. “An’[5] Marv is fine.”
“One of the demon hunters is here,” Ghostbur whispered, hunching in on himself to make himself smaller.
“From Egoton?” Marvin tried to look around the shelf and saw someone in a dark cloak talking to the person behind the register.
“Fook,”[1] Marvin magicked his mask into his hands and put it on. “I’m supposed ta[6] be on leave, stay back here and[5] stay down.”
“Okay,” Ghostbur nodded nervously.
Marvin braced to start casting spells as he walked out. “Well, this is a shite meetin’. The fook yeh doin’ so far from home?”[7]
The hunter turned and pulled down their hood, revealing themself to be the Grandmaster’s second-in-command, “I thought I detected your aura close by.”
“Why don’t we take this outside?” Marvin snarled. “Leave the nice human out ‘a[8] this?”
“Of course, of course,” Taylor promised, and began to back out. Marvin rushed to pay for his things and handed the bags to Ghostbur, who was ordered to stay back in the shop as Marvin stepped out. People were definitely starting to recognize who he was now.
“Yeh need ta turn back around an’ head back o’er ta Egoton, before this fight gets nasty,”[9] Marvin warned. “Not on the clock, supposed ta[6] be headed back home.”
“I would have left you be, but I need help,” the hunter said.
“That’s what the rest ‘a yer Guild is fer,”[10] Marvin spat.
“The Guildmaster is planning another attack on Egoton, but she’s got help,” Taylor told him quickly. “I’ve tried everything to stop her, but she’s only doubling down, all she cares about is killing demons.”
“Why haven’t yeh[2] told the other heroes?” Marvin demanded.
“Are you kidding me?” They spat. “Spade would kill me. Besides, the Host didn’t let me even get close. I’m being watched by the Guildmaster’s favorite hunters. I only just managed to lose them.”
“What are they gonna[11] do?” Marvin demanded.
“The Guildmaster has been talking with the CIA and some showboat freak that’s got a vendetta against the Entity. He passed all the tests as a human but there’s no way that thing is human.” Taylor wasn’t meeting his eyes and they looked pissed. “I think his name is Mark or Marcus.”
Something triggered in the back of Marvin’s memory. He wasn’t sure if he’d heard something in passing but he could have sworn he knew what person the hunter was talking about, but his mind couldn’t conjure a message.
Either way, the demon hunters team with a dangerous personal enemy of Dark’s and the government was a bad idea.
“Shit!” Taylor spat, looking back and pulling out a staff from their robe. “No!”
Marvin looked around, expecting to see more Hunter walking over to him, but he only saw Ghostbur fall out of the little convenience store’s door. He was desperately trying to be discreet and failing.
“Wait, he’s with me,” Marvin got in between the hunter and Ghostbur, readying his cards to defend him.
“With you?” Taylor balked. “Are you insane? Do you know who that is?”
“I work with a guy who’s sleepin’[12] with a mob boss behind my back, an’[5] a demon kid who talks ta[6] squirrels.” Marvin could already feel his blood pressure rising again. “Don’t talk ta me about knowin’ who people are, ‘cause I don’t, an’ I think you do either.”[13]
Ghostbur began getting close but was clearly nervous. Marvin looked at the people watching them and Marvin decided, “Maybe we should get outta[14] here.”
Taylor looked around and threw down a smoke bomb, letting Marvin get into the rental car with Ghostbur and the hunter and driving away, which was immediately tense because Ghostbur was obviously nervous. She was sitting in the back of the car.
Ghostbur was turned around his his seat, looking sadly at her, “I’m sorry if old me ever hurt you in the past. I can’t remember if we’ve ever met.”
“What are you playing at?” The hunter snapped.
“I’ve had really bad memory since I discorporated,” Ghostbur ducked behind the chair. “I know I was a terrible person but I don’t remember you.”
“We never met,” Taylor told him and Ghostbur visibly calmed down.
“Oh, that’s a relief,” Ghostbur sighed and turned around. “Have you met Friend? He’s quite lovely.”
“Don’t summon yer[15] sheep inta[16] my car,” Marvin told her, he knew he shouldn’t be driving to his Mom’s house but he knew that if he didn’t visit her after telling her he was coming back to town and didn’t visit her he would be in trouble. She would find him and that was the last thing he wanted. Besides, he could probably keep the hunter in the car. He glanced at the hunter in the rearview mirror. “So yeh’ve ne’er met Ghostbur, but yeh know who he is?”[17]
“Their entire pact has titles,” Taylor told him. “Philza the Angel of Death, Techno the Blade, Lady Death, Wilbur the Sootling, and Tommy the Child Soldier.”
Marvin thought back to Tommy, laughing and joking around with Ethan and Tubbo. He’d seen Phil and Techno, knew they were dangerous, but he could only imagine the kinds of things Tommy had been through before meeting him in an almost empty sheep field with Ghostbur.
“I’m Ghostbur,” Ghostbur corrected, trying to hide behind the seat again. “Wilbur is dead.”
“Is that so?” The hunter demanded. “Why would the Angel of Death allow that?”
Ghostbur fell quiet, and Marvin verbally moved in to save him. “Hey, I’m gonna[11] call the heroes before I lose all my service out in the middle ‘a[8] fookin’[18] nowhere.”
Before the hunter could argue, Marvin was already speed dialing Chase.
It took a couple rings before Chase actually picked up and Marvin could tell there was someone else talking to him but over the hum of the car on the road there was no way to tell if it was Dark or Jackie.
“Yeh[2] good?” Chase asked.
“Wish I was,” Marvin told him. “The demon hunters are plannin’[19] an attack on the city next week.”
“What?” Chase demanded in shock and someone on the other line was talking to Chase. “Is it on Friday?”
Shit! Marvin thought and his eyes darted back at Taylor and his knuckles went white on the steering wheel. “Is it on Friday?”
“Yeah, why?” Taylor asked.
“Shite, that’s the wedding,” Marvin hissed, then shouted back at the phone, “Yes!”
“Fook!”[1] Chase spat. Then Chase leaned away from the phone. “The fook yeh wanna do?”[20]
More muffled speaking followed.
“That . . .” Chase cut off, leaving Marvin unsure if he stopped talking or Marvin just couldn’t hear his rebuttal. But it let Marvin narrow down who Chase was probably with and talking to. “Look, Marv, I’ll call yeh back later. Gotta talk ta Dark about this.”[21]
“Yeah, that makes sense,” Marvin said, “take care ‘a yerself, ‘kay?”[22]
“Yeah,” Chase hung up, leaving the car in silence.
“What happens on Friday?” Taylor leaned forward closer to the driver’s seat.
“There’s a wedding, one ‘a Dark’s sons an’ one ‘a our aged out apprentices is gettin’ married next week, an’ this is too coincidental,”[23] Marvin explained.
“Is that what the event is?” Taylor realized. “We were told there was some big festival or gathering.”
“Nothing bad ever happens at a festival,” Ghostbur mumbled blankly, as if recalling some past, bad memory.
“Okay, okay, we’re comin’ up ta my stop, I gotta talk ta someone an’ then we can come up with a plan,”[24] Marvin told his passengers.
“Alright,” the hunter seemed to calm down.

Why am I so tired all the time?
4:30 am: youngest child wakes up after wetting the bed. change child, change bedsheets, replace drinks, turn night time music back on, convince youngest child that it is in fact still night time. Climb back into bed a 4:55.
5:00 am: eldest child comes to tell me that youngest child wants to play. I am aware, because I have heard her loudly declaring such since I left their room. Tell oldest child to go back to bed. Pray that, somehow, for the very first time, they will put themselves back to sleep.
5:05 am: give up on hopeless prayers. Get up and take both children to the living room. Change the youngest into underwear. Log into tablets and override the “do not turn on until 6 am” setting. Wait for coffee to finish brewing.
5:23 am: extract self from underneath 2 children and a dog to pour first cup of coffee. It’s half caff, because spouse has a heart condition. Remind self that I can have several cups with impunity.
5:45 am: Eldest child is unhappy with the pre-made breakfast provided for him the night before. When asked what he would like to eat, he responds, “bacon, chinese food, or pizza.” Explain, again, that we need a variety of foods for our bodies to grow strong. Spend 15 minutes convincing him to eat $5 worth of blackberries as a compromise.
6:12 am: Finish 2nd cup of coffee, realize that eldest child’s night time pull up is overflowing with poop. Usher him to the bathroom for a bath. Feel humbled when I realize that I spent 10 years in grad school, and yet I am still reduced to wiping shit off another person. Calmly remind eldest child that he is capable of using the potty, and that I have confidence in him.
6:30 am: Spouse awakes, complains that he slept poorly. Roll eyes and go back to drinking 3rd cup of coffee, in between being elbowed in the stomach and explaining that no, I do not know how to work the video game you just downloaded 15 seconds ago. Remind self that I am their physical and mental safe place, which is worth the literal bruises and mental stress.
6:45 am: extract self from pile of children and dog by physically lifting each dependent off my lap. Verify that spouse is up for supervision duties, collect running clothes, and start treadmill.
6:47 am: stop treadmill because youngest child has entered the room and decided that I will not run today because it’s not fair. Remind self that arguing fairness with a 3 year old is the definition of futility. Gently remind her that I love her, she is a big girl, and she can play independently while I run.
6:49 am: start treadmill again. Nagging calf pain seems to be back. Scale back workout, remind self that value of the run is not the distance. Do extra core workout to compensate.
7:30 am: shower. Mediate 2 sibling fights from shower. Fortunately, children are camped out in the bathroom with me, so I don’t have to leave a trail of water through the house to interact.
7:35 am: Marvel at the thought that spouse takes a 45 min shower. EVERY DAY. Note gratitude that I am working from home, and no longer have to style hair and makeup.
7:36 am: Refill kid drink cups for the 3rd time today. Spend 30 minutes convincing, cajoling, and bribing kids to put on clean underwear. We no longer try for clothes.
8:06 am: turn on work computer. Respond to a weekend full of emails. Handle 5 pressing tasks for side hustle, reasoning that if I get them out of the way, I can push the rest of that to do list to after working hours.
8:45 am: Answer persistent pounding on locked office door. refill drinks and provide snack. Reassure youngest child that mommy is still here, but she needs to work.
9:03 am: debate whether going to the bathroom is worth leaving the office and the begging that ensues. Make wrong choice either way.
9:15 am: morning meetings get shuffled later, because childless coworkers “are running late this morning.” Marvel at the concept of 9:15 am being early.
9:30 am: solid wall of meetings until noon. Update team on status at end of last week, despite not remembering what you just ate for breakfast. Realize that you haven’t eaten breakfast. Run training and introduction for new team member. You are the only woman on the team,  so you get do the training because “you’re so good at explaining things.”
12:00 pm: Call youngest child’s preschool, make sure you can bring by her supplies and still adhere to Covid protocols. Preschool is also side hustle, so cram a parent and employee meeting into a single hour. Explain that new registration system will, in fact, be more efficient than old paper system. Remind preschool staff that we committed to going paperless. Make small talk with preschool teachers until the hour is up. Hop in the car and speed home.
1:00 pm: children adhere to my side the second I walk in the door. Spouse is in the shower. Children have eaten approximately 3 bites of their pb&j sandwiches, and demand different lunch. Remember that you have not eaten lunch yet. Refill drinks for 4th time, provide reasonable lunch alternatives.
1:25 pm: Remember that you scheduled a meeting for 1:30, and. you need to be present. Calculate that extraction from children is not possible in 5 minutes, and take meeting with youngest child on lap. Despite having weaned 1.5 years ago, youngest child decides that you’re still nursing, and pulls down top on video call. Spend most of call switching on and off mute. Catch every 3rd word.
1:45 pm: apologize to team, promise to reschedule a follow up with more focus. Hang up, extract youngest child’s arm from shirt. Refill drinks for the 5th time. Bribe children to get in bed for a nap with the promise of a visit to nana and pop this afternoon.
1:48 pm: children’s beds have been stripped, due to accidents last night, but spouse “doesn’t know where the clean sheets are”, and so hasn’t remade beds. Children petition to nap on the floor. Explain floor is not comfortable. Find clean sheets, make 2 beds, take everyone to the potty, tuck both children in.
2:20 pm: Realize that you have 40 minutes of actual work time left today, outside of meetings. Try to prioritize, with the knowledge that whatever you get done will not be enough. Deny request for drink refill.
3:00 pm: kick off afternoon meeting block. Try frantically to make the 40 minutes that you did get to work sound like a whole lot more. Wake children up during bathroom break so that they’ll be able to sleep tonight. Refill drinks for 5th time.
3:45 pm: Curse the fact that youngest child has inherited your distaste for waking up. Gently coax her awake in between meetings.
4:00 pm: Wrap up last task from meetings, make list of all new tasks. Realize that today you have checked off one task, and received 7 new ones. Promise self that you’ll get your work laptop back out after the kids are in bed. Ignore the sense of despair that threatens to overtake you.
4:20 pm: Bribe children into putting on clothes with promise of fruit snacks at grandparent’s house. Feel mildly guilty as you put on your second round of workout gear. Load children in double jogging stroller, jog to grandparent’s house.
5:00 pm: collect children to head home for dinner.
5:10 pm: threaten no more fruit snacks if children don’t put on their shoes. Grandparents go get them more fruit snacks.
5:23 pm: explain that the sun is going down in 24 minutes, and that we have to leave now to get home before it gets dark. Remember that time is immaterial. Wish for that blissful sense of ignorance.
5:37 pm: push 100 lbs of toddler and stroller up giant, hilly driveway. Spouse greets us with “what’s for dinner?” Politely remind him that he promised to plan and make dinner while we were gone. Grit teeth at his “I didn’t know what to make” response. Quickly run through available, easy, acceptable options and make dinner.
6:15 pm: serve dinner. Eat own dinner in 2.5 minutes, then spend rest of meal refilling drinks and plates, heating up or cooling down, and cajoling children to eat anything at all.
6:45 pm: Announce that tonight we don’t need to take a bath. Youngest child immediately melts down, because she wanted to take a bath. Eldest child melts down because, even thought he didn’t want to take a bath, he wanted to taunt his sister while she was in the bath.
6:53 pm: Loose temper for 1st time today, scream that children need to brush their teeth. Step away to calm down. Spouse gets upset because “You can’t handle the children without yelling.” Bite tongue all the way through to avoid snarky reply.
7:10 pm: read 2 story books. Read one more. Explain again, that mommy cannot read anymore, and daddy will come read for a little while. Extract self from pile of children, and tuck both in. Hugs, kisses, and fist bumps. Twice. Then once more, after you’ve left the room.
7:15 pm: contemplate second shower. Decide that you didn’t really get that sweaty on the walk, and it’s not like you’re going out. Collapse on sofa with phone and mindless tv.
7:25 pm: spouse comes into the living room after harrowing duty of reading for 10 minutes. Hand over the remote, pull out side hustle lap top and finalize tasks for the day.
8:30 pm: remember that you promised to do main job work. Bring out that laptop to run some code while you continue side hustle work.
9:15 pm: Finish side hustle work, give up on main job work for the evening. Mentally apologize to team for not making more progress, promise to self that you’ll be more focused tomorrow.
9:30 pm: tell spouse that you need to go to bed. Endure his eye roll and disappointed face. Apologize for needing to go to sleep so early, and reassure him that you’re doing the best you can.
10:15 pm: eldest child has night terror. Comfort eldest child until he’s calm. Comfort youngest child, who is upset at brother’s screams. Realize that spouse is still watching tv in the living room while you comfort children.
11:00 pm: listen to youngest child cry for 10 minutes until spouse begrudgingly tends to her. Remind self that it is not solely my job to comfort our children. Try to go back to sleep.
3 am: eldest child wakes up with question about mushrooms that is vitally important. Answer to best of middle-of-the-night ability, acknowledge that you appreciate his curiosity, but that there are times when questions are not appropriate. Get him back to sleep.
4:30 am: youngest child wakes up.

1x10 discussion questions
one season down, two to go!!! this has been so much fun y’all. i've watched s1 all by my onesies a totally normal amount of times but watching with all of you is it’s own kind of delight. your jokes and your takes are a+++. truly enhance the experience. and i know i say it every week but a sincere thank you to @pynkhues for organizing and all the work you put into it.
ANYWAY enough of the gross emo stuff.
1. What was your favourite scene of the episode? Tell us why!
this is a question with an objectively correct answer and it’s when dean gets hit by a car. the last scene is p good too i guess.
2. Was there any scene that missed the mark for you? And if so, how?
the line dancing scene chills me to my core but that says more about my feelings about line dancing than the scene itself. it’s not so much that it misses the mark as much as i consider it a personal attack on part with repeatedly saying sauce arms and making me remember the bandaid.
3. Let’s start from the top! That scene with Rio and Turner! This is our first ever Rio POV scene, and a lot of crucial information is delivered in it – from what Rio’s like as a crime boss to the situation with Eddie. What do you make of this scene? And do you think Rio ever saw Turner as a real threat?
rio saw turner as a whole ass snack and he was right
4. It’s Beth and Dean’s twentieth anniversary! Beth warms to him again over the course of this episode before the cancer lie is revealed. What do you think the trajectory of Beth and Dean’s relationship would’ve looked like if the lie hadn’t been revealed?
eventually beth would’ve taken out the trash. i don’t think there’s a version of the two of them that would work long term as long as beth is coming more and more into herself through crime and dean is, you know, dean. would’ve totally derailed the brio pacing though so someone get that doctor a medal.
5. Annnnd on a related note, do you think the cancer lie is lost to us forever, or that the show might still throw it back on the table at some point?
i have deep seated tv-related trust issues so i’ve convinced myself that no we won’t so i can’t be any more disappointed than i already am
6. Ben has his first few days at St. Anne’s, and it goes well, despite Annie’s reservations. Do you think Greg was right to change Ben’s schooling? Do you think Annie was right in having her reservations? Or is it some combination of both?
as a product of a catholic school elementary environment i feel extremely qualified to say that catholic school kids will fuck you up and annie was absolutely justified in her reservations. that said, clearly the public school kids were also fucking ben up so greg was in the right too. the moral of the story is kids are assholes.
7. What do you think the show might be saying with the fact that Annie’s son finds safety at a school called St. Anne’s?
you know i never connected those dots before. it’s a little on the nose but it makes me go awwwww so i’ll allow it.
8. What do you think of the Fine & Frugal job overall? Do you think it was a good idea to set Rio up in the way that they did? Do you think it was a good way to get the money for Sara’s transplant?
the (second!! second!!!!) fine & frugal job was, to put it mildly, extremely stupid. just the fact that they robbed it for the second time is enough but oh my GOD the rio portion of the plan tips it over the edge. it’s too many levels of stupid i can’t list them all. it’s the girls at their most short sighted and it makes me want to bang my head against the nearest flat surface.
THAT SAID one thing that i’ve always really loved about the show is the girls are like, truly awful at crime in many ways and fairly consistently reap the consequences of that. i love that they’re sort of bumbling their way to success with their individual talents and determination but not being like, smooth criminals or whatever. i’ve watched the version of this show where that happens (*stares in weeds*) and it’s infuriating.
9. What do you think of the scene with Tyler at the end and how he let the girls off the hook in exchange for getting to be the hero? What do you think this tells us about the overall themes of the show?
i love the hell out of tyler that pure hearted himbo. i know there are deeper thoughts here around male entitlement and how it’s seen through characters like boomer and dean and turner and rio but it’s late and my brain is there. i do like how it’s mmmmmm underscored? subverted? by tyler basically asking annie to make it seem like he’s someone to be taken seriously. it reminds me of a little kid asking for help playing dress up or make believe. idk idk idk pretend i said something smart.
10. Mary Pat discovers Boomer’s been spying on her! It leads to one of my favourite fights of the entire series between Mary Pat and Boomer! What do you think that fight told us about Mary Pat and Boomer’s relationship so far, and who each of them are as people?
Tumblr media
mary-pat was deeply wronged and in a different ‘verse is bffs with the girls. JUSTICE FOR MARY-PAT
11. On a related note, what did you think of Mary Pat going to Beth with the news?
i love it, for as much as mary-pat tries to walk tall and carry a big stick or whatever, as soon as stuff starts falling apart her first instinct is to run to her crime mom for help. THEY SHOULD BE FRIENDS DAMMIT.
12. Beth throws down a pretty big bluff with Annie and Ruby about going to Canada to take over Rio’s business. Do you think she actually intended to go through with it? Or do you think she was just joking? Or was it something in between?
you know how sometimes people tell jokes that are so funny hahahaha but also omg you guys what if we really did it? it’s one of those.
13. In 100 words or less, please describe your emotional journey in watching Stan find out what Ruby had done for the money to save Sara.
N O
14. Annie and Greg have a pivotal moment together as co-parents at the end of this episode. Do you think this is a satisfying culmination to their arc across this season? And do you see any sort of future for them as a couple overall?
probs not any time soon bc i think zach gilford got another job but i hope so bc i love them lEaVE mE aLoNE
15. That! Final! Scene! Between! Beth! Rio! And! Dean! So much emotion! Give us all your thoughts, comments, feelings! And pretend you were yet to see s2 - what would you predict the outcome would be?
i love literally (like, actually literally) every single thing about this scene. truly god tier and we haven’t even gotten to the dean gets shot/face-touching/E L I Z A B E T H stuff. i’m trying to remember what i thought when i first watched this but honestly i think i was just mashing the next episode button over and over like some kind of psychotic chimpanzee on meth bc netflix wasn’t loading fast enough.
