I NEED more polycule rep but I also NEED polycule rep not to just be "uwu everyone is dating!!" because 9 times out of 10 that would be a disaster because relationships DON'T WORK THAT WAY, not everyone is compatible and not everyone is compatible in the same way, and I don't just mean orientation-wise, I mean personality-wise
Anyway here's my vision of the kim-ramona-scott-wallace polycule

As most of you know I teach people the art of making comics with giving workshops at VickZie Workshops. There are always enthusiast who want to learn more than we can teach in the hour we mostly offer. That’s why we decided to make a comic ourselves called: ‘Stripsgewijs’. (For now, it’s only in Dutch.)
Making a comic with my colleague @comic_void_fiction had more challenges than I anticipated. We wanted to merge our art styles in a way to make it a whole, while also having our own original voice. This demanded some experimenting, trials, errors, more errors. Which made us better at recognizing our ‘brand identity’ (fancy words make me a professional).
We are very proud of the result. We will be posting the comics some time online over at @vickzieworkshops but there are some extra’s in the comic book. Which if interested, you can buy from me or Vick! 😊

i just found your account and i'm so so so so so in love with your ocs and your artstyle and it's all just so AMAZING!!!! leave some swag for the rest of us fr!!
i've seen some of your traditional stuff and wanted to ask what pens/pencils you use to sketch?? and have you ever tried coloring/making finished illustrations traditionally?
i'm a traditional artist (i just fill sketchbooks and never make anything finished) and everytime i see tutorials for comicbook/misprint/vintage-y art it's always digital (probably because of the aging and editing possibilities). so I'm curious if you've ever tried it (or if it's even possible lol)
thank you so much for sharing your art with us!!
Oh thank you so much!! 😭
I do make lots of traditional art, and I looove working with ink. I gravitate towards Pilot fine points and Speedball for making comics, but really just experimenting with different ones on different media is the best :]
And it is totally possible to make hand-drawn misprints! Once you got your linework, get yourself some alcohol markers (preferably in cmyk colors) and lay them down individually in layers, staggering each color to one side/outside the lines a little! Also tracing over your lines with a different color pen gives you a chromatic aberration appearance, too!
Tumblr media
Also, even if you do a little ink wash/water color over your work, it can really make it pop! You can even add "stains" to the art that way...
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Also, lastly, solid blocks of color and linework over it reflecta the UPA style, which is SUPER fun to do with paint and pens!
So there's tons of ways to get your traditional art to look vintage :D I'm glad you asked, thank you!

Hi! I'm kinda shy but I love your vintage finish on your work. Would you consider offering pointers for how to achieve that vibe?
oh, absolutely!! i love that sort of style and i think more people should be able to achieve it if they want!! shouldn't gatekeep art stuff ^^ i don't really do vintage style stuff a lot, and i take more comic book/print/retro inspo than anything. but, these go hand in hand!! please know i am still learning, too! this is just how i do it.
also, there's a lot of guides for this online and tools... that you have to purchase. i can assure you everything listed here is free! (including my pirated SAI2 copy!) some things have donations available towards the artists that made them, so you can do that if you want to support an artist :D
i'll go over basically everything i know, so this WILL get long! i also spent hours going over several days searching for resources, so i'll list everything so you don't have to ^^
(PART 1/2 BECAUSE OF IMAGE LIMITATIONS!!! PART 2 SHOULD BE WRITTEN SOON AFTER THIS ONE!! reblog THAT once it's done!)
-------------------------------------------------------------
THE ART ITSELF / INSPIRATIONS:
for the ARTSTYLE and WHAT you draw: you can just draw whatever!! really, do your own thing! twist this style in your own way, it doesn't have to be a 100% accurate!! i literally used these same vintage look effects in a drawing drawn in my usual style of high roller. you can draw anything you want and you don't need to copy comicbook styles or all that!!
Tumblr media
or - you CAN take inspo from vintage comic books / artwork or other printed comics! (for me tom and jerry comes to mind as something with a toony style, since it's what i read as a kid. also donald duck comics! no need to follow this but if you wanna be extra you can! ^^ looking at inspo is good.)
however you will need to look at examples aside from just the Artstyle, to achieve the actual Look!!
here's some examples pics i took of some comics i own laying around in a shelf. these are mixed ages, the asterix and ducktales comics being older and the tom and jerry comic being newer. i have some oldies since i got them passed down! czech text + asterix jumpscare, sorry.
to move on from the artstyle talk fully and more to the general style/look part - notice how the tom and jerry has brighter colors, less dirt, and an overall better quality!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
one thing i want you to note, in older prints there's obvious color misprinting and imperfections! you may chose to do this, or don't! depends what kind of era or printing you wanna reference. of course, also keep in mind the veeery limited CYMK colors they had Back In The Day. also note the dirt!!! how some parts are lighter and more chipped and how it isn't a full block of color!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
a lot of this does parrot posessedpasm's own guide, which i HIGHLY recommend! it's where i got a jump-start on things. there's other things listed on their post, which you should give a read! goes over history of some things that will let you have a better understanding of stuff.
speaking of inspo and on the topic of posessedpasm, before we move on - they're one of my biggest inspirations for this! their art is incredible and i think it's important to look at other artists' take on these styles. go out there and look at other artists who draw in a similar style achieving the same retro look!!! (no but genuinely i could look at posessedpasm's art forever... i love just looking at it and studying it!! i want what they have... but i'm not gonna gush now!)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
ACTUAL TECHNICALITIES / HOW THE FUCK DO I DO IT ???:
FIRST, LINEART!!: i choose a brush that's somewhat fluttery and resembles ink at least a little bit, instead of a basic round brush. here's the brush i used, for any sai2 users. i'll show my krita faves after!!
Tumblr media
(note brush size, gets fuzzier the bigger it is)
Tumblr media
and the krita alternatives! i don't do inking / lineart in krita in 99.9% of my art unless i'm experimenting. but there's some great brushes you can find online to use! here's links to the ones on screen
tomb of null
buck a. brush
ramonm inktober (he just presents it but since it's his post i named it that) (download link is on the video!)
that alone already gets the lineart look just a bit. but it's not all! krita is especially useful for this, as sai doesn't have this function. (but i find my way around it
Tumblr media Tumblr media
here's a WIP screenshot i took while drawing that piece VS the final piece!
you may notice the lineart is "chipped" away in some spots. printing always wasn't perfect and created some imperfections, that may smudge and chip away as time goes on.
HERE'S A GUIDE FOR IMITATING THAT!!!!
what i do, is simply create a clipping layer on the lineart. (typically i do the lineart, then color, THEN do lineart effects, but this is just for show) (i also usually have a set, typically orange/yellow background color picked already, but i haven't done that here for Whatever Reason)
Tumblr media
set it to "erase" layer mode... (and click the little "a" to actually clip it to the layer. you could also just make a quick clipping group that does it for you!)
Tumblr media
and draw over the lineart! (preferably with a highly textured "dirty" brush!) the erase clipping layer will only erase the lineart, and nothing underneath it. you can change the opacity up and down to adjust the erasing... you can add more erase layers to play with the effect a little!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
what i then do (sometimes), i ctrl+e the lineart group to one layer. i copy it. i ctrl+z to go back to keep the group if needed. i paste the copied lineart underneath it. i add a blur filter, shift it to be slightly off from the lineart by a few pixels, and set it to "burn". i may change the color to be a very dark orange-ish brownish color. gives an effect of the lineart bleeding a little!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
COLORING!!:
color: okay so for this part i just kinda bullshit it and either pick whatever colors i want, or i color pick them from this image below then slightly alter if i need a different color. i do not have the patience to do my own cymk layer management digitally, just adding my effects can take OVER an hour and i have a way that looks nice Without It. i either fake my color misprints later or i just don't do it. still stuff to consider!
Tumblr media
(taken from posessedpasm's guide! this is how i colored my sticky lou drawing. usually i will just pick my own colors and yellow them/dim them slightly.)
how do i do it: i color in sai using my usual brush or the one i showed previously. if i color on krita i use a different fuzzy kind of brush...
some colors i do on different layers and i move them slightly to make the misprinted effect. then i may erase small bits of it to make it look a bit better if i want.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
if you really want the funky color mixing that may not be Extra Accurate anyway - draw using different colors on different layers. the layer overlapping with the bottom layer... set it to "multiply" and eyedrop the color where the two colors overlap. set the layer effect back to "normal". lock your opacity so you draw only on the Already Colored Parts and color the overlapping area using the eyedropped color! neato !
Tumblr media
ONE THING TO NOTE!!! if something is white, you should leave it uncolored/transparent. unless you stylize it to be a different color entirely, if so... go ahead! but if it's WHITE white - just don't color it at all!!!
and now, to my Favorite part - the halftone overlay effect!!! here's where things can get fairly convincing already - plus, i use this effect / similar even in my normal art!
before ANYTHING!! at least, for krita - to achieve the best look i use the newspaper plugin!
newspaper plugin for krita
FIRST, i merge the color layer into one layer and then add it into a clipping group. i then copy the color layer and paste it OUTSIDE the clipping group.
Tumblr media
then, select your PASTED color layer (named on the screenshot so u know what i mean) and go to tools>scripts>newspaper (once you install the plugin!)
i then play with the settings a bit. i typically don't touch everything - i just change the mode to Four color (CMY+K Pictures) or Four color (CMYK - Pictures) (this one usually looks better imo)
i also change the size to be smaller, usually around 4.00px.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
click OK! it'll generate cymk halftone layers IN a clipping group! don't worry about the black, you can rid of it easily ;]
Tumblr media
just close the group and move it to be inside of your color group below! clip the whole cmyk group over the color layer... and BOOM!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but that's not it! set the newspaper group's layer effect to luminosity (or whatever you find works best...!) adjust the opacity to around 50%-30% and BOOM!!
Tumblr media
though, that's not all! do the same things we did to erase up the lineart earlier to the coloring, too. same steps! in the same clipping group! just make sure it's above the cmyk newspaper group.
you can then group both lineart groups and color groups into ANOTHER group that will contain them both. with that you can then make an erase layer over them both so they both get affected by it and make it look like both got chipped away, and not like they're separate entities. ^^
you can then use this for backgrounds... text... other things!
one important thing is also getting those papery, dirty effects... which i'll cover in a reblog! (image limit :,]) alongside that, i'll list all my resources for download there!!!

[Stardew Valley] - Discovering the disaster -
[Context] : Shane needed a little walk in the forest after spending too much time closed into his room. But he's the first one who fell on the strange disaster happened.
-
This is the part of my own version of stardew valley, maybe weird for some.
I'm planning to continue the story, not in the same work I put into this two page, I wanted the beginning to be special that's all.
I'm not used to do comicbook so I'm working on finding the good artstyle for it and not killing my energy.

Genuine question for you, Archie, are you self-taught when it comes to art or did you go to school/take classes for it? I also really love your art style, could you share how you developed it? (if it's not too much to ask for that is)
Hi Raz!
Yeah, its a bit of both!! I was always into drawing as a kid, though it sort of ebbed and flowed a bit, until I was about 11 years old. It was tradition to spend a week during the summer in the city with my cousin, and during that time we did a week long comic arts workshop with a professional comicbook illustrator (whos name currently escapes me). I was hooked after that. we went to another workshop the next year, and then after that I'm pretty much entirely self taught aside from highschool arts class.
As for my art style, I pinged around through really liking anime, to really liking comic books, to really really liking fanart and artists i found on tumblr and instagram when i was young. I don't know if i would say i started doing art for the purpose of developing my style, I just drew what felt right. I would fill entire sketchbooks during my school days, drawing at every spare moment I could. drawing the same ocs and characters over and over. I have so many sketchbooks i honestly don't know what to do with them.
I think the most tangible thing i did to improve my artstyle and develop it further was drawing from references. I'd take time out of my day, usually during lectures, that i'd look stuff up on pinterest and draw it. and not just stuff i liked drawing either, I'd try to draw from a variety of things, bugs, animals, houses, plants, people. I'd do an exercise, one i highly recommend to people looking to make their lines more confident, where i'd only draw in highlighter and ink pen. the highlighter was to get the silhouette of the shape, the pen was to define the shapes. No erasing, no going back. Plant your fucking feet as it were. it helped me establish my current style of drawing a lot.
thanks for asking!

Idk if you ever read spider-gwen/gwen spider-woman, but is her comic storyline similar to her atsv storyline? like to what extent
also i can totally see her character going through the cishet -> noncanon trans icon -> trans icon in modern iterations pipeline
i’ve read some Spider-Gwen! the answer is yes and no.
Spider-Gwen first appeared as a one-off tie in for the comic event Spider-Verse. in the comics, the Spider-Verse storyline is very different to the films, focuses mostly on Pete and not so much Miles, and features Spider-People from across the multiverse being hunted down by a family of Dudes Who Eat Spider-Mans, and a bunch of them eventually team up. some of the tie-in comics for this event are like showcases of different spider-people in their separate universes and artstyles, before shunting them into the main storyline for them to appear as supporting characters. Gwen is one of these, but she was so beloved they eventually gave her her own comicbook title, Spider-Gwen, where we get to see all the cool different things about her universe, like who Captain America is, what Matt Murdock is up to, and what’s going on with venom. She also has pretty regular crossovers with other Spider-People, using technology gained in Spider-Verse. Firstly she mostly hangs out with Jess, who is also quite different in the comics (i like both versions though) and also Cindy, a different Spider-person integral to Spider-Verse. eventually i think she starts crossing over with Miles pretty regularly.
superhero movies basically always try and change major parts of popular storylines to keep legacy fans as interested as people who only ever saw the movies. how EVER, the stuff with Gwen’s universe’s Pete in the Spider-Verse films is basically beat for beat true to the comics too. there will be a lot of crossover there with backstory naturally, but all of that happened before her comic starts and is only really explored in flashbacks.

Marvel Rivals. (Closed Alpha)
...It's pretty much Overwatch with Marvel's cast. A lot of people went into this thinking it'd be a cash grab, but we were greeted with a very well made game.
Initially teased through this image, a lot of people thought it was for a mobile game, or some sort of collab. The stylization here made me think this was a mobile project. "Marvel never puts this kind of sauce on the front lines.", i thought.
Tumblr media
Come a day later, Marvel Rivals is formally revealed. This game's premise has a lot to do with the multiverse, bringing characters from all over to fight. One thing i do like about this is that a lot of these characters are inspired more from their comic book origins, rather than the more popular MCU. Wanda is actually Magneto's daughter, and their origins are more familiar to readers.
For one, the visuals are AMAZING. It's not even funny. The character design is killer, having that edge and wackiness that you'd expect from a comicbook. Going into this personally, i was worried they'd use the MCU's tired design sensibilities. None of that is here. Each of these characters look as if they've jumped off of the pages, each represented with beautiful artwork. This mix of realism and stylization is the shit i live for.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The same applies to the game's 3D models as well. They're perfect recreations of the artstyle. Animations are top notch as well.
The maps look great too, with each one having a specific context that may even include characters that aren't playable, like Spider-Zero! The maps also have unique entrance animations that play into the story being told.
Tumblr media
The gameplay had some serious work put into it. Each hero may seem familiar, but they each have something that makes them unique. There's things unique to this game, like team up abilities. When you start a match with two characters that can "team up", both players will get an animation play on their screen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They're mostly passive abilities that can make your character play better. Some of them are more mechanical too, with rocket being able to hop on Groot's (another player) back.
Obviously, this game is here to challenge Overwatch. Most that have tried in the past have either failed or didnt get the chance, but... i think this one actually has a shot. If it's this good in alpha, god knows what a full release will look like. We're not even at the beta.

(I always thought the reason why the X-Men weren't that meme'd on was because their comicbook artstyle is less interesting and accessible than manga and anime... And the 60s Spiderman you and the anon were talking about. For me, it's easier to apply my own art style on a drawing that's already stylized to some extent than one that constantly aims to be realistic or hyper-realistic and lacks much personality. It's easier for me to meme something like the "chimp with a gun" from Hellboy than anything X-Men.)
to be honest i dont think many of the 90s marvel cartoons get that many memes, one I'm suprised didnt become a meme is the big Sentinel trying to get away and saying "I am still plugged in!"

Comicbook cover. Here's the Blurb:
The USS Voyager continues its journey through the delta quardant, when they encounter a strange wormhole. The next thing she knows, Janeway wakes up in what seems to be a motel room, and wearing orange jumpsuit along with weird boots. Now she needs to get back to her ship, and perhaps with the help of an android , she may just be successful.
Hey, so this comic I'm making I started work on a while ago on deviantart, but now I've decided to redo it on tumblr with an updated artstyle. Hope you enjoy this as much as I enjoy making it!

Adobe's motives are to own the copyright to all AI art, not to defeat the AI art lol. They are literally on the edge of being sued because they stole art to feed to their AI (and they now want to copyright that artstyle they stole).
This would actually spell out doom for the artists if it actually passes. Not only will Adobe get insane profits off of AI art, but that means all your favorite TV shows and comicbook art styles are becoming properties, and all your fanart from those shows of comicbooks are now infringing the copyright.
If you ever saw that extremely on point Total Drama or My Little Pony fanart, well all those fanartists would be infringing the copyright. And I'm not even gonna talk about the Marvel comics fanart, because that's owned by Disney and they will sure as hell enforce their copyright.
adobe is actively pushing to make art styles intellectual property covered under copyright law and artists online are doing shit like this

monday 6th November 2023 comic books
★○★○★○★
Tumblr media
★○★○★○★
what is a comic book?
A comic book, also called comicbook, comic magazine or simply comic, is a publication that consists of comics art in the form of sequential juxtaposed panels that represent individual scenes.
for me the most important thing about comic books is;
colour
art style
visual
interesting (ish) character design. - with character design it does not need to be too interesting unless it has something to make them stand out.

I have decided to leave it sketchy as of my incision of how the scene should go down.

trying to design sweeny Todd
as much as I love my artstyle I did not see It being perfect for how I envision my part of the comic to go.
I have started designing my incision on how Sweeny Todd would look in my head, bad part, I do not know how to draw biological men well. so I started with basic shapes of a circle and a diamond and worked my way up from there.
Tumblr media
I started adding colour when I got to an okay spot in my sketch
Tumblr media
although its not my favourite design for his character I kind of like how it turned out despite it not being my usual artstyle

Finth Concept Art
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He is Finth, it's a made up name btw. He is another chatacter from my comicbook.
His appearence is obviously inspired by Kel from Omori. His eyes were taken directly from that artstyle. He's a basketball player, although that idea was inspired from lots of friends of mine, since I know lots of people who play basketball.
I might need to change his appearence, since I think it looks too similar to Kel, but I don't know. :^)
