"The amount of electricity generated by the UK’s gas and coal power plants fell by 20% last year, with consumption of fossil fuels at its lowest level since 1957.
Not since Harold Macmillan was the UK prime minister and the Beatles’ John Lennon and Paul McCartney met for the first time has the UK used less coal and gas.
The UK’s gas power plants last year generated 31% of the UK’s electricity, or 98 terawatt hours (TWh), according to a report by the industry journal Carbon Brief, while the UK’s last remaining coal plant produced enough electricity to meet just 1% of the UK’s power demand or 4TWh.
Fossil fuels were squeezed out of the electricity system by a surge in renewable energy generation combined with higher electricity imports from France and Norway and a long-term trend of falling demand.
Higher power imports last year were driven by an increase in nuclear power from France and hydropower from Norway in 2023. This marked a reversal from 2022 when a string of nuclear outages in France helped make the UK a net exporter of electricity for the first time.
Carbon Brief found that gas and coal power plants made up just over a third of the UK’s electricity supplies in 2023, while renewable energy provided the single largest source of power to the grid at a record 42%.
It was the third year this decade that renewable energy sources, including wind, solar, hydro and biomass power, outperformed fossil fuels [in the UK], according to the analysis. Renewables and Britain’s nuclear reactors, which generated 13% of electricity supplies last year, helped low-carbon electricity make up 55% of the UK’s electricity in 2023.
[Note: "Third year this decade" refers to the UK specifically, not global; there are several countries that already run on 100% renewable energy, and more above 90% renewable. Also, though, there have only been four years this decade so far! So three out of four is pretty good!]
Tumblr media
Dan McGrail, the chief executive of RenewableUK, said the data shows “the central role that wind, solar and other clean power sources are consistently playing in Britain’s energy transition”.
“We’re working closely with the government to accelerate the pace at which we build new projects and new supply chains in the face of intense global competition, as everyone is trying to replicate our success,” McGrail said.
Electricity from fossil fuels was two-thirds lower in 2023 compared with its peak in 2008, according to Carbon Brief. It found that coal has dropped by 97% and gas by 43% in the last 15 years.
Coal power is expected to fall further in 2024 after the planned shutdown of Britain’s last remaining coal plant in September. The Ratcliffe on Soar coal plant, owned by the German utility Uniper, is scheduled to shut before next winter after generating power for over 55 years.
Renewable energy has increased sixfold since 2008 as the UK has constructed more wind and solar farms, and the large Drax coal plant has converted some of its generating units to burn biomass pellets.
Electricity demand has tumbled by 22% since its peak in 2005, according to the data, as part of a long-term trend driven by more energy efficient homes and appliances as well as a decline in the UK’s manufacturing sector.
Demand for electricity is expected to double as the UK aims to cut emissions to net zero by 2050 because the plan relies heavily on replacing fossil fuel transport and heating with electric alternatives.
In recent weeks [aka at the end of 2023], offshore wind developers have given the green light to another four large windfarms in UK waters, including the world’s largest offshore windfarm at Hornsea 3, which will be built off the North Yorkshire coast by Denmark’s Ørsted."

1964 Iso Bizzarini A3C
Following his heated departure from Ferrari in 1961, Giotto Bizzarrini who aided in the design and development of the Ferrari 250 series, including the fabled GTO, was hired by Renzo Rivolta to develop a new GT car. However, Bizzarrini’s aspirations were to create a competitive race car. The Iso Grifo A3/C would be the fruits of his labour – a powerful Chevrolet V8, sleek aerodynamics and near perfect weight distribution combined creating a competitive entrant for both the Nürburgring and at Le Mans.
Produced in 1964 Chassis B-0215 (D) – the (D) denoting right hand drive, is the example offered. It is one of the original riveted aluminium cars built by Drogo and the records declare that 0215 was red with a black interior.
More unique still, is that 0215 is the only right hand drive riveted aluminium example with a period competition history. Upon delivery to the first owner in 1965 – Derek Wharton (UK) 0215 was entered into the 1965 Autosport GT Championship at Oulton Park. Then he would compete in the Leinster Trophy at Dunboyne in Ireland later that year.

An “unheard of” marine heatwave off the coasts of the UK and Ireland poses a serious threat to species, scientists have warned.
Sea temperatures, particularly off the north-east coast of England and the west of Ireland, are several degrees above normal, smashing records for late spring and early summer. The North Sea and north Atlantic are experiencing higher temperatures, data shows.
Daniela Schmidt, a professor of earth sciences at the University of Bristol, said: “The extreme and unprecedented temperatures show the power of the combination of human-induced warming and natural climate variability like El Niño."
“While marine heatwaves are found in warmer seas like the Mediterranean, such anomalous temperatures in this part of the north Atlantic are unheard of. They have been linked to less dust from the Sahara but also the North Atlantic climate variability, which will need further understanding to unravel."
“Heat, like on land, stresses marine organisms. In other parts of the world, we have seen several mass mortalities of marine plants and animals caused by ocean heatwave which have caused hundreds of millions of pounds of losses, in fisheries income, carbon storage, cultural values and habitat loss. As long as we are not dramatically cutting emissions, these heatwaves will continue to destroy our ecosystems. But as this is happening below the surface of the ocean, it will go unnoticed.”

Since there has been some interest in my current intake, here is it broke down. I have tried numerous setups but this custom OEM+ version is the best and passes stupid SMOG visual check.
I also intensely studied the 2.5RS forums and looked at dyno charts showing that this IS the best when combined with a 2.25" cat back exhaust and equal length headers. Trust me!
This was a lot work as well as trial and error and willingness to start over again and redo it again several times. I think this was also the lightest combo if you trying to reduce weight.
One of a kind custom intake for the naturally aspirated Subaru EJ25D....
Tumblr media
First up is you need the intake tract/duct and hoses from an earlier model Subaru Impreza or any Subaru that has this intake tube vs the stock version with the "torque box" behind the throttle body. Junkyard is your best buddy.
I had expensive high performance mandrel bent blah blah blah intakes which I constantly struggled with keeping the metal tubing cool (I used a laser temp gauge). This plastic is basically the same but rarely gets too hot to touch. So, actually a cold air intake if you keep reading.
Tumblr media
Since the entire manifold needed to come out, I painted it wrinkle red and polished the runners and throttle inlet.
Tumblr media
The reason I removed the manifold was to install stainless studs to make installing the 10mm thick teflon spacers and 2 sets of gaskets easier. Similar to 8mm Grimmspeed phenolic (previously installed) but thicker. This mod makes a big difference, the entire manifold now stays cool. No more engine block heat soak, only ambient engine bay heat.
"For every 5 degree reduction in temperature, increases power by 1%"
You have to extend the EGR tube and possibly grind your ignition coil pack mounts lower. Because the entire manifold assembly will be sitting ~12mm higher.
Tumblr media
I was fortunate enough to work with the gasket maker. So he made 10mm teflon intake manifold spacers and a matching prototype 10mm throttle body spacer! Again 2 gaskets to ensure no leaks. Not sure if these were ever made available afterwards since I was the first car.
This spacer combo increased plenum volume as well as helped to keep heat transfer drastically reduced.
Tumblr media
Using my custom ported, polished and knife edged throttle body that I did myself with the coolant hose permanently bypassed and the cruise control bits removed. Keep in mind you will need longer bolts if you use a spacer here. Definitely improved throttle response after just the throttle body swap.
Tumblr media
I scored this GC8 v3 factory resonator/cold air intake inlet from the UK. It's what goes with those fender plugs. Grabs cold air from inside the fender behind the corner light up high, so no chance of sucking up water. FWIW, You really shouldn't just delete the "snorkus", seriously, it's just gonna mess up your MAF sensor.
I was also able to make the resonator from a SVX work in the 04 Outback with some persuasion. It too takes air from the same location but the box was hard to cram in the fender.
Tumblr media
The intake tract will work with whatever air filter box but in order to use the EUDM WRX intake inlet/resonator you will need the matching filter housing box from an earlier model or have to drill a new mounting hole. You will need both halves!
Tumblr media
BEST panel filter on the market IS made by Grimmspeed! Don't waste your money on any other filter! I also added a Filter Wears waterproof inlet cover/pre-filter to the resonator just incase of water spray. The factory option fender plug fills that hole.
Tumblr media
And I'm not sure if this was an upgrade or not but here is the JDM JECS MAF I am also using. Used DEI gold heat reflective tape to keep it cool and extend the life. Possibly more consistent/accurate readings?
The only other things installed are a Weapon R catch can to the PVC, which DOES keep some crap out of the intake tract and off the throttle body but probably no real performance advantage. Plus a heat/flame resistant "sock", same as around my fluid reservoirs, over the bendy/flexible bit of the intake tract just after the MAF. That area is prone to splitting/cracking with heat and age!
Now for treasure at the end of the rainbow! I am actually gonna give you nerds the mother fucking part numbers! These can be life savers when searching for parts.
*You might have to make or reuse your PVC, crankcase, IAC valve hoses. So grab whatever is attached if your at the junkyard or hit up the auto parts store.
•Subaru PN's:
Intake duct/tract (EJ22): 14457AA111
Air filter housing/box: A53FA02 (upper) & A53FA01 (lower)
Fender resonator/snorkus (UK WRX): A21FA03 or A32FA01 or A21FA00
Fender plug: 46059FA000
•Grimmspeed PN's:
Dry-Con Air Filter: 060092

Back to Uganda
25-26th February 2023
Tumblr media
Leaving the house at 2.45 a.m. and arriving in our Entebbe guesthouse at 11.30 p.m. made for quite  a long day. But all the documents were present and correct and our baggage came with us all the way to Uganda, unlike last year when we had quite a challenging start.
Some of you will be familiar with the necessities that need to be obtained  - visas are much easier because you can do most of it on line. Currency – Millions of Uganda shillings needed to pay for our transport and fuel apart from anything else, because you can’t rely on paying by card on this kind of safari.
Then it’s worth changing the SIM cards on our mobiles to make communications slicker within Uganda. That process is quite fun, as once in the relevant shop you have a session with several different people (the equivalent to “Cashier number 3 please”) before the ceremonial insertion of your Uganda card and then working out where to stash your removed very small UK SIM card for safekeeping.
After a quick sortie into the local supermarket for safari sundries – a surprisingly wide variety of goods for sale – we had a quick lunch and headed south to Nkima Forest Lodge. The weeks preceding our departure had been quite complicated and tiring,  and Ewan decided we should begin the safari with a day off.
As we came to the lodge the owner was sorting out “a little water problem” – there was none. Dry weather meant the water table had dropped, affecting the supply. And the sun had not been shining so the water was not being heated!
Tumblr media
But we were glad to arrive, and the water problem was duly sorted. We’ve been especially pleased to find we had some very congenial fellow guests: four young civil servants from UK.
I don’t know your views on civil servants but having worked in government service in both UK and Africa, we rather approve of them and recognise their importance. After all, they are the ones who try to give good information and advice to government ministers and a great deal depends on that.
The group currently at Nkima are working in conflict resolution, humanitarian relief aid, and secret projects they couldn’t name…..all fascinating and we found them irresistibly interesting and admirable. How refreshing.
Nkima is an eco-lodge, powered by the sun.
Tumblr media
Solar lights recharging.
Nkima lodge is famous especially for the chance to see shoebill storks, very rare, in the swamps around Lake Victoria. And that’s just what we did this morning, travelling in a small boat along the channels through the reeds, water lilies and hyacinths, with a marvellous variety of birds along the way.
Tumblr media
Wonderful to see so many malachite kingfishers, one of our very favourites, and exquisitely beautiful.
Tumblr media
Pied Kingfisher and a Malachite King fisher
And finally, we did indeed meet a shoebill stork, huge and impressive with quite a presence. He apparently stays in one place for 3-4 hours, catching a very occasional lungfish for a snack. We can see why people get excited about such a sighting. We were delighted later to see one on the wing, soaring, as our guide announced, “up to the clouds”.
Tumblr media
Shoebills: notes for enthusiasts. You don’t have to read this bit, but some of the info we’ve found is so fascinating we thought we’d give you the chance to share in it.
Shoebills: “perhaps the most eagerly sought of all African birds” by anyone with even the slightest interest in birds.
Two things combine to give the shoebill its striking appearance
It’s huge! An adult might stand more than 5 feet (150cm) tall. Seeing ours standing in the swamp it could easily have been a human.
Its clog-shaped hook-tipped bill, 20cm wide and almost as long, the largest of all living bird species. Perhaps not surprising that it's part of the pelican family. The bill is held in a permanent Cheshire cat smile, and the bird can look both sinister and inane. One of our young civil servants was eyeballed by a shoebill in the swamp yesterday and wondered if it was going to attack, but it just kept on smiling.
Tumblr media
More fun facts about shoebills
Shoebills live for ages in bird terms – up to 50 years. They are faithful partners for life, male and female building a grassy nest up to 3m wide on a floating island.
Parents share incubation duties. In hot weather they fill their beaks with water and spray the eggs to keep them cool. How cool is that? Eggs hatch after a month, and the dedicated parents continue to feed them for another two.
The adult birds spend a lot of time standing around semi-frozen for several hours before suddenly plunging with great drama, speed and power to make a successful kill of a favourite lungfish, a tasty toad, or perhaps a baby crocodile.
Shoebills are remarkable birds of distinctive appearance and with fascinating characteristics. Not surprisingly they come with a number of myths, legends and superstitions, and remain under threat as their habitats are being destroyed
Here in the Mabamba swamp in Uganda it really pays the local community to protect the environment and the special shoebills. Tourists, particularly birding enthusiasts but not only them, pay local people significant sums for the privilege of a boat ride through the swamp with a knowledgeable guide and a reasonable chance of seeing a shoebill.
We had a wonderful morning, and along with so many brilliant birds almost within touching distance, seeing the shoebill both on land and in the air was a precious privilege. We felt much restored.

How austerity broke Britain
“The case for austerity was presented less as an economic imperative and more as an ethical one. The UK had enjoyed many years of growth and prosperity by living beyond its means; the time had come to pay the bill. This morality tale had truly perverse consequences. A period of elite excess was twisted into a reason for popular guilt, which would legitimate punishment of the poor. On those ideological terms, at least, austerity worked: the number of food bank parcels handed out by the Trussell Trust increased by 2,612 percent under Cameron’s premiership …
“During the 1980s, the Thatcher government introduced measures designed to corrode the power of the working class and strengthen capital. The idea, as author Gregoire Chamayou agues, was to restore the ‘governability’ of society. Workers had to be reminded who was boss — and neoliberal economic policies provided the whip that would be used to beat them into submission.
“Today, austerity, combined with tighter monetary policy, is playing the same role. Lower government spending, higher taxes, and high interest rates all restrict demand, and therefore put downward pressure on wages and undermine stable employment.
“The threat of unemployment is supposed to discipline workers into accepting lower wages and avoiding strike action. The problem for the government is that working people have been subjected to so much suffering over the last decade that many feel they have little left to lose. When you can barely heat your home and put food on the table, not demanding wage increases in line with inflation seems like a greater risk than doing so.”

The disaster our cities are not prepared for (Washington Post) For days, residents of Houston struggled to survive as temperatures rose. They shared generators, filled buckets and bathtubs with ice, packed air conditioned hotels and emergency rooms. The most vulnerable struggled to get the care they needed. Many died. But in some ways, Houston was narrowly spared. Temperatures rose to the high 90s, but only for a couple of days. If the heat had stayed, the human toll could have been far worse. Experts warn this type of catastrophe—a combined power outage with a heat wave—is a scenario that cities and states are unprepared for. “I don’t think it’s likely—I think it’s an absolute certainty,” said Brian Stone, a professor and director of the Urban Climate Lab at the Georgia Institute of Technology. “I think it’s an absolute certainty that we will have an extreme heat wave and an extended blackout in the United States.” The Washington Post analyzed the risks of a prolonged, citywide blackout coinciding with a more severe heat wave. The results show that such a heat wave could kill between 600 and 1,500 people in the Houston metro area over five days. With the power grid working normally, the same heat wave would lead to around 50 deaths.
Mexico’s president asks Sinaloa cartel to act ‘responsibly’ as violence escalates in the north (AP) Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on Friday asked the warring factions of the Sinaloa cartel to act “responsibly” so no one else gets killed, after a week of escalating violence nearly paralyzed the Sinaloa state capital, Culiacan. Asked by a journalist if he trusted that the cartels would heed his call, López Obrador answered bluntly: “The president of Mexico is always listened to.” “Even by criminals?” pressed the journalist. “By everyone, more so if one has moral authority,” responded the president. The president, who leaves office on Sept. 30, has repeatedly refused to confront cartels, laying out various justifications for his “hugs, not bullets” strategy offering opportunities to youths so they won’t join cartels. The latest clashes in Culiacan are the latest example of the violence that continues to plague Mexico, where cartels employ increasingly sophisticated forms of warfare including roadside bombs or IEDs, trenches, home-made armored vehicles and bomb-dropping drones.
Seeking affordable housing in tourist hotspots (Reuters) Two European tourist and expat hot spots are trying different approaches to make housing affordable for their citizens. Greece will offer tax breaks to homeowners who convert their rentals to long term from short. Portugal is simply creating more supply by budgeting more than $2 billion to build 33,000 homes by the end of the decade.
Prague on high flood alert as central Europe faces torrential rain (AP) Prague was putting up flood defences in the city’s historic centre on Friday after Czech forecasters expanded a warning for extreme rainfall to areas of the country including the capital, which suffered catastrophic flooding more than 20 years ago. Heavy rain has pounded mostly eastern parts of the Czech Republic since Thursday, and the most affected areas may see more than a third of annual rainfall over four days by Sunday. Similar weather has been forecast around central Europe, including southern Germany and parts of Austria, Poland, and Slovakia over the coming days. “Data shows we are facing uneasy days,” Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala told a televised briefing after a crisis committee meeting, adding that in some places water levels may exceed flooding coming on average once in 100 or more years.
Russia expels six UK diplomats as tensions rise over Ukraine missiles (Reuters) Russia’s FSB security service said on Friday it had revoked the accreditation of six British diplomats in Moscow after accusing them of spying and sabotage work, signalling the Kremlin’s anger at what it sees as London’s vital role in helping Ukraine. Britain described the accusations as “completely baseless”, saying it was a tit-for-tat action after the UK expelled the Russian defence attache and removed diplomatic status from several Russian properties in May. Russia announced the expulsions hours before British Prime Minister Keir Starmer met U.S. President Joe Biden at the White House, a crucial step towards winning the go-ahead for Kyiv to use long-range missiles against targets in Russia.
India’s top court releases New Delhi’s chief minister on bail after 6 months in jail (AP) India’s top court on Friday freed on bail Arvind Kejriwal, a prominent opposition leader and chief minister of New Delhi, who was arrested nearly six months ago ahead of national elections on charges of receiving bribes from a liquor distributor. Kejriwal is the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party, or Common Man’s Party, which governs New Delhi. He is one of India’s most influential politicians of the past decade and a fierce critic of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Kejriwal was initially arrested in March, weeks before the national elections. He denied the accusations and called them a political conspiracy. Kejriwal’s party is part of a broad alliance of opposition parties called INDIA which was the main challenger to Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party in the elections, which concluded in June.
Pope’s Asia Tour Points Toward a Less-Western Church (NYT) Over the last couple of weeks, Pope Francis hoisted himself up on sore legs dozens of times. As he crisscrossed large swaths of the Asia Pacific region, he shuffled from cars to his wheelchair, from the wheelchair to makeshift papal thrones and on and off many planes as hot, tropical winds blew on the tarmac. The trip amounted to the longest and farthest reaching yet for Francis, and at 87, some of his supporters fear it may be one of his last. But that he flew thousands of miles to Asian countries with relatively small Catholic populations, braving oppressive temperatures and high levels of humidity and pollution, underlined Francis’s commitment to building a church with a less Eurocentric future. “The long distance, the fatigue, the challenges,” said Cardinal Michael Czerny, a close aide to Francis. “They are part of the message.” His purpose, he has long made clear, is to emphasize outreach and inclusivity. As he visited remote, tropical villages in Papua New Guinea, he put in practice his pledge to embrace what he calls the church’s “peripheries,” faraway, minority or poorer Catholics.
China raises retirement age (CNBC) China will raise retirement age for the first time since 1978. The country’s top legislative body has approved proposals to “gradually raise” the retirement age from 60 to 63 for men, 55 to 58 for women in white-collar jobs and 50 to 55 for women in blue-collar jobs. The move aims at addressing China’s shrinking population and aging workforce. The policy change will be carried out over 15 years, starting in January 2025. China’s current retirement ages are among the lowest in the world.
Women in Iran are going without hijabs as the 2nd anniversary of Mahsa Amini’s death approaches (AP) On the streets of Iranian cities, it’s becoming more common to see a woman passing by without a mandatory headscarf, or hijab, as the second anniversary of the death of Mahsa Amini and the mass protests it sparked approaches. There’s no government official or study acknowledging the phenomenon, which began as Iran entered its hot summer months and power cuts in its overburdened electrical system became common. But across social media, videos of people filming neighborhood streets or just talking about a normal day in their life, women and girls can be seen walking past with their long hair out over their shoulders, particularly after sunset. This defiance comes despite what United Nations investigators describe as “expanded repressive measures and policies” by Iran’s theocracy to punish them—though there’s been no recent catalyzing event like Amini’s death to galvanize demonstrators.
Underage, Under Fire (AP) JENIN, West Bank—In the web of battered, sun-baked streets winding up the hillside, bloodshed is as unrelenting as the heat. So it is not hard to see why, when raid sirens and gunfire erupted yet again on a morning in late May, 15-year-old Mahmoud Hamadneh turned his bike down an alley that held out the promise of refuge. “He didn’t do anything. He only had his books and a pencil case,” says Amjad Hamadneh, whose son, a buzz-cut devotee of computer games, was one of two teens killed that morning in the opening minutes of a raid by Israeli forces. More than 150 teens and children 17 or younger have been killed in the West Bank since Hamas’ brutal attack on communities in southern Israel set off the war last October. Most died in nearly daily raids by the Israeli army that Amnesty International says have used disproportionate and unlawful force. At the same time, Israel, which has long jailed Palestinians from the West Bank without charge, has extended that practice to many more teens. After October, food deprivation, overcrowding of cells and other mistreatment escalated sharply, the recently released and advocates say.
The sweet success of banana wine (BBC) A small-scale farmer in northern Malawi, Emily Nkhana used to discard over-ripe bananas or just let them rot, but she has now found a profitable use for them—banana wine. Extreme heat was causing bananas to ripen too quickly, resulting in heavy losses for Ms Nkhana and many other farmers who live in Karonga district. “Then we discovered how to make banana wine,” she tells the BBC, as she peels lemons that would be used to preserve the taste of bananas at the processing plant of Twitule Cooperative Group. For the farmers, it is not just about making wine—but also survival, resilience, and embracing the new possibilities that come with a changing climate. The banana pulp misture is left to ferment for several weeks, transforming the banana pulp into a potent, aromatic wine, containing 13% alcohol—similar to wine made from grapes. “It’s smooth and light, almost like a dessert wine,” says Paul Kamwendo, a local wine enthusiast who has become one of the biggest fans of banana wine in Karonga. “I had no idea one could make wine out of bananas.”
Harvest Moon (Space.com) Look up on September 17! The Harvest Moon, the full moon closest to the fall equinox, will experience a slight lunar eclipse, a foretaste of the ring eclipse of the sun on October 2. The name “Harvest Moon” comes from a time before electricity and agricultural machinery, when farmers relied on the moonlight to harvest crops through the night and work more when their cultivations were the most bountiful.
Studies on pigeon-guided missiles, swimming abilities of dead fish among Ig Nobels winners (AP) A study that explores the feasibility of using pigeons to guide missiles and one that looks at the swimming abilities of dead fish were among the winners Thursday of this year’s Ig Nobels, the prize for comical scientific achievement. Held less than a month before the actual Nobel Prizes are announced, the 34th annual Ig Nobel prize ceremony at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was organized by the Annals of Improbable Research magazine’s website to make people laugh and think. Winners received a transparent box containing historic items related to Murphy’s Law—the theme of the night—and a nearly worthless Zimbabwean $10 trillion bill. Actual Nobel laureates handed the winners their prizes.

We're going to need more copper.
John Ellis
Aug 27, 2024
1. ExxonMobil has said global oil demand will remain virtually unchanged by 2050 and warned that any move to curtail investment in fossil fuels would trigger a new energy price shock. In a forecast released on Monday, the US supermajor said oil demand would stay above 100 million barrels a day (b/d) over the next 25 years — a forecast that assumes an energy transition will fail to curb the world’s thirst for fossil fuels. Exxon warned of a new global oil shock if companies failed to keep investing to match that demand, saying crude prices could quadruple as supply fell. Exxon’s prediction contrasts sharply with UK oil major BP, which expects oil consumption to decline to 75 million b/d in 2050. The International Energy Agency projects oil demand would fall to 54.8 million b/d if governments met their climate pledges on time. (Source: ft.com)
2. The battle cry of energy transition advocates is “Electrify everything.” Meaning: Let’s power cars, heating systems, industrial plants, and every other type of machine with electricity rather than fossil fuels. To do that, we need copper—and lots of it. Second to silver, a rarer and far more expensive metal, copper is the best natural electrical conductor on Earth. We need it for solar panels, wind turbines, and electric vehicles. (A typical EV contains as much as 175 pounds of copper.) We need it for the giant batteries that will provide power when the sun isn’t shining and the wind isn’t blowing. We need it to massively expand and upgrade the countless miles of power cables that undergird the energy grid in practically every country. In the United States, the capacity of the electric grid will have to grow as much as threefold to meet the expected demand. A recent report from S&P Global predicts that the amount of copper we’ll need over the next 25 years will add up to more than the human race has consumed in its entire history. “The world has never produced anywhere close to this much copper in such a short time frame,” the report notes. The world might not be up to the challenge. Analysts predict supplies will fall short by millions of tons in the coming years. No wonder Goldman Sachs has declared “no decarbonization without copper” and called copper “the new oil.” (Source: wired.com, italics mine)
3. An experiment conducted by researchers from Leibniz University Hannover in Germany show how quantum information and the classic 1s and 0s of conventional data could be beamed down the same optical fiber. Potentially, that means an internet that's almost hack-proof – and the possibility of using existing infrastructure to connect multiple quantum computers in networks that might one day provide a unique means of processing power that could solve otherwise insurmountable computing tasks. Quantum communication requires closely-related waves of light to be sent in isolation to protect their delicately entangled relationship, which means they need to be transmitted separately to conventional data-carrying light waves. That makes it tricky to send everything down the same pipe. "To make the quantum internet a reality, we need to transmit entangled photons via fiber optic networks," says physicist Michael Kues, from Leibniz University Hannover. "We also want to continue using optical fibers for conventional data transmission. Our research is an important step to combine the conventional internet with the quantum internet."
