hiii saw your months old post about how steph and cass act maps age and maps acts like eight in batgirls. and had to come in and discuss in the ask because truly EVERY TIME cloonan writes the gotham academy kids im like shocked at how she like willingly fucks up the characters she literally cocreated? like how she wrote the batgirls themselves is its own bag of worms or whatever but gotham academy kids are crazy. like saved by the belle reve is all sorts of nonsense on its own and its one issue that theres been no followup on. what do we MEAN were brushing over colton moving to metropolis with his parents when he explicitly stopped living with abusive dad last time we saw him. what do you MEAN olives not even in the story. what do you meannnn like what are we TALKING about. and how young maps acts is crazy. like timeline wise shouldnt she be like. damians age minimum or even a little older. like what are we even doing. you literally made these guys

It is really odd to read.

I tend to treat Gotham Academy stuff as its own separate continuity from wider DC canon as it only imperfectly lines up with main continuity (don't get me started on either the Clayface or Man-Bat retcons in this), but the fact that not even Cloonan or Fletcher can be bothered making sure their own creation is consistent with itself makes it hard to treat with any seriousness.

These are largely all original characters! Gotham Academy established that Maps and Damian are about the same age (Maps might even be older than Damian, as you noted), and Damian's about 14 as of Batgirls. A whole handful of the characters have cameoed elsewhere and then those cameos are ignored.

And given that Olive's probably my favourite of the whole lot, the fact she's been missing since Second Semester is frustrating, yeah.

It's not like these characters need to appear outside of their origin material, and so choosing to use them but not bother to make it consistent with their main text, when you wrote that text, is sure a decision.

It is just genuinely baffling to me that they wrote Jackson off for season 3.

And I am aware that he was written off because it was Colton's choice to leave, and he had every right to, but in-universe wise, for the journey and story of Jackson Whittemore, writing him off was just dumb and unsatisfying and even a recast would have been better.

I mean, they set Jackson's change up in the fourth episode. Of season 1. He gets the claws in the neck and slowly starts changing and we know something isn't going right.

All of season 2 was about him and his corrupted form, that was literally the main overarching plotline.

Jackson's change and journey into becoming a werewolf literally took nearly the entire first two seasons.

And in the season 2 finale, he finally gets what he always wanted. And in, like, the most epic romance moment for him and Lydia.

And then he's just gone in season 3.

All of that. All of that was supposed to be a set-up, we should have gotten to see him freed of the kanima curse be a real werewolf, we should have gotten to see what his and Scott's rivalry would have been like now that they both were werewolves, and truly after that epic moment of love between him and Lydia we should have gotten to see them properly rekindle.

Instead, the character just "moves to London".

Which is on multiple accounts frustrating, like... the Whittemores know that Jackson has issues about his adoption so their logic is that surely it would be healthy for him to move all the way across the pond, far away from where the graves of his birth parents are? Instead of focusing on healing, together, as a family, and confronting the tragedy and Jackson's feelings about it, they just up and move him away from there. It's stupid.

Again, adore Colton, think he was absolutely perfect in the role and I wish he'd been payed what he was worth and hadn't left the show, but damn did I want to see Jackson's story continue.

I tried so many times to get a story about Flea's spleen through, but every time it got nixed by Kids' WB (not 'Gigante' enough? They took it very literally: A thumb wrestling story concerning The Flea and 'Warty' also had the kibosh put on it for the same reason :)

But after wising up and making the story about an evil medico and his creation, the spleen got its moment in the ML! sun!

The cherry on top is that amazing, inventive, hilarious storyboard by Greg Colton. Nurse Caliente is also his design!

Could you tell me about maps? I’ve never heard of her but I love dc stuff (so infect me)

BOY DO I HAVE SO MUCH TO TELL but I will be vague because her comics are very good and I don't want to spoil

Mia "Maps" Mizoguchi is from Gotham Academy, which is mostly its own thing but occasionally it ties into something the bats are doing before going back to its own plotline, where she's either the main character or the supporting main depending on what's going on

the basis for the comic is that her, her best friend olive, her brother kyle, and their friends colton and pomeline (and occasionally her roommate katherine) explore the secrets of their school, most of which having to do with olive's mom and ancestry. it's a really good read and where you'll find most of the canon content for her

personality-wise she's a fun, happy-go-lucky character who loves mysteries and making maps (hence her nickname lmao) and she LOVES the bats. she really wants to be robin and she's literally perfect for it. I (hope) think she will be since she's appeared as one in a batman: black and white issue and temporarily in a secondary detective comics plot last year where she stops some monsters with a jar of PICKLES like a BADASS (I don't remember which issues but mystery of maps just released which should have it in there EDIT: its batman 2016 issues 119-121) and she would be the permanent robin now if dc would stop beING COWARDS

The day was pretty, birds chirping, flowers blooming, so even though Queen Everly had just finished a meeting with her husband and her King, she felt good. Autumn was at her side as radiant as a summer day as they strode back to the royal chambers together. That was where Colton was. Everly’s heart melted at the thought of him. Her beautiful son. She sped up, eager to get back to him. 

When they arrived, he was giggling as her ladies-in-waiting played peek-a-boo with him in the outside chamber. He rocked back and forth on one of the soft cushions, grabbing his ankles with his chubby arms, practically shrieking with laughter. His eyes lit up like stars when he saw her. Tumbling forward in excitement, he landed face first on the ground before lurching up and running at her. “Mommy!” 

She swung him up into her arms, on her hip, with practiced ease and showered him in kisses. “How’s my little man doing?” 

He laughed, squirming in her arms before his eyes, dark brown like hers, landed on Autumn and a bold smile lit his face. She grinned back. “Mama,” he cooed happily, drooling slightly. 

They all froze, Autumn’s smile slipping, ice running through Everly’s veins, sudden and sharp. Nobody in the room moved a muscle as pregnant silence engulfed them. Colton noticed their horror and furrowed his eyebrows, looking up at Everly. “What’s wrong, Mommy?” 

Everly closed her eyes, feeling as if her heart had been ripped in two. “Honey… I…” She reopened her eyes, glancing worriedly at Autumn then back at her precious, confused little boy. 

Autumn stepped closer, looking just as conflicted as her. “You can’t call me that, baby.” 

Colton pressed his lips together as if he was about to cry. “Why?” 

Autumn stared at him desperately. “I’m not your mom.” 

Colton blinked. “But… you take care of me.” He looked between Autumn and Everly. “That’s what a mommy does.” 

“Well… yes.” Autumn agreed quietly. “But Ev takes care of you because she’s your mommy. You came from her.” 

Colton stared at her, slightly exasperated. “I know who Mommy is.”  

Autumn sighed in relief. “You do?” 

He nodded. “Yes. You and Mommy.” 

Autumn’s face collapsed. “Baby, you can’t call me that.” 

He screwed up his face in frustration. “Why?” 

Everly spoke up. “Your father wouldn’t like it very much.” 

Colton’s expression soured and he pouted, crossing his arms over his chest. “Don’t like that man.” 

Everly tightened her arms around him. “I know, baby. But he’s in charge so…” she swallowed thickly. “We have to do what he says. Which means you can’t call Autumn Mom, okay?” 

Colton seemed tired of the conversation, squirming in Everly’s arms. “Okay. Can I have a snack now?” 

Everly set him down and motioned for one of her ladies-in-waiting to step forward. “Alice, can you fetch him some food from the kitchens?” 

Alice nodded and rushed off as Colton toddled back over to Mia and Amelia who started to coo over him again, continuing their game of peek-a-boo. 

Everly sat down heavily on one of the couches and watched them, Autumn perching beside her, like a steady candle in the night. “Did we do the right thing?” 

Autumn took her hand. “Everett would kill us all if he heard that. You’re just trying to protect him.” 

“But he’s right,” Everly heard herself saying. “You’re more his parent than that monster was or ever will be.” 

“If we lived in a different world that would be true. But we live here. In a world where truth must be hidden to protect our lives. You’ve known that from the day you agreed to marry that bastard.” Autumn squeezed her hand and Everly wondered when she had gotten so wise. She had always been the better of the two in Everly’s opinions but these days Everly felt as if she would be dead without Autumn by her side. 

Everly nodded sadly, feeling the weight of it all pressing down on her shoulders. “I just wish it were different. For him.” For her son; forced to grow up in a place that demanded so much from him and gave nothing back. 

“Maybe,” Autumn said slowly. “Maybe someday it will be.”

so BARS is a pretty interesting character — in my head at least.

canon wise, we know very little about her, other than she's an omnic sniper within the deadlock gang, as seen in the reunion short. knowing this and hearing a voiceline or two referencing her over the years, i created a base for her and ran with it. consider anything else you read here to be headcanons and only pertain to my portrayal of cassidy / bars. these ideas will also tie heavily into this headcanon post. these ideas will also be a little sporadic and may not make any sense at all, i never promised a good hc post.

an omnic of few words — a founding member and right hand to colton's gang leader father, she was an ever present body at the ranch. she was respected by all and maintained high ranking throughout her entire time with the gang. intuition as sharp as her aim, she'd protect his father and the others as if they were family — seeing as she didn't have anyone else, maybe they were. nobody really knew the full story of bars, her true purpose or where she came from, but everyone knew better than to ask.

she remembers the day colton was born. and she remembers it so vividly because it was the day the boy's mother had her promise to protect him. over all else. his father included. she agreed and became a constant in colton's life from that point forward. she'd teach him firearm safety and how to shoot at an extremely young age — FIVE, "and-a-half" she'd remind his mother after giving her a near heart attack the day she found out, but bars would insist that she had everything under control, and later pointing out that he won't always have others to look after him. that even an omnic won't be around forever. that this is something good, something he should be prepared for.

they'd continue their lessons over the course of several years, colton forming a close brother / sister-like bond with the omnic. they grew attached at the hip ( maybe a bit reluctantly on bars' part ), colton always following her around during farm duties, hunting her down when he found a new game to play, or the second he'd run into any sort of problem, she was the first to know — including the night his father was killed.

bars was the only member notified — the one entrusted with getting rid of the body and scrubbing the house of all evidence. she kept the rest of the gang off his back for as long as she could, and sent him and his mother away to texas once the allegations began.

it didn't take long for the leaderless group to disperse, bars choosing to keep her distance to ensure safe keeping of the two. until receiving a phone call from colton's mother — about the trouble her son's been walking himself into as of late. how she's not sure exactly what he's up to, but she's sure it's no good.

upon her arrival to texas and swift interrogation with the teen, she finds the beginning foundation of the deadlock rebels — to no one's surprise. serving her promise to keep him safe, but at the same time knowing she can't make decisions for him, she joins the ranks of the reconstructed group.

during the overwatch raid, bars had the opportunity to keep colton from being captured, or at least aid in his escape. but she chose not to. to continue to uphold her promise to his late mother.

while his fate in the hands of overwatch were unknown, she did know his fate should he continue down the deadlock road. she's seen it before, with the ranch, with his father —

she'd watch him go, but stayed with the rebels under ashe's command, keeping a close eye on her as emotions flared once the assumption was made that he willingly joined overwatch over rejoining the gang. the two kept in touch over the years, bars updating colton on the gang's whereabouts and up-to's in an attempt to avoid potentially deadly conflict. so, needless to say, she was very surprised to see him show up to the train raid on route 66 —

anyway, neat little fact: in my modern verse, when jesse's ran out of the gang, bars goes with him. she runs the kitchen at the bar and can cook up a pretty mean burger.

she also reminds him on a daily bases that she does not care for the name he chose for the bar — :))

Interview with TikTok Star, Caoimhe Morris

TikTok is a rapidly growing social media app, created when ByteDance, a Beijing-based company, spent $1 billion to purchase Musical.ly and merged their own app Douyin (Chinese: 抖音) with it. The new app was launched in 2017. Rising in popularity each year since. In 2019, CNET announced TikTok was the 7th most downloaded mobile app of the decade, from 2010 to 2019. 

It is a micro-video app, one where users create and share videos from 15 to 60 seconds. The editing features are leagues above the standard social media apps, more comparable to that of professional editing software. 1,000 of features, from instant eye recoloring to flaming backgrounds, all with a single click. The app has videos for anyone and everyone ranging from cooking, vlogging, comedy, music, politics, and cosplay.

I asked a TikToker I’ve been following if I could interview her, she said yes. She is Caoimhe Morris, @caoimhemorris on TikTok, who has 910.7 K followers and 23.9 million likes. She is a cosplayer, famous for creating and acting as her own characters.

McPherson: What would you like our readers to know about you?

Morris: I am a geeky girl that likes to dress up and act like other people. 

McPherson: How has your life changed because of this app?

Morris: I didn’t really notice how much this app had changed my life until I realized I only hang out with TikTokers now and not even on purpose. I literally have made so many amazing friends on this app and have had so many unforgettable experiences like traveling or getting to work with brands I never thought I would, overall I’m just so grateful for getting this far. 

McPherson: Is there anything you’d change if you were given a second chance?

Morris: I try not to live with regrets because they make you into the person you are.

McPherson: How do you edit so well?

Morris: I loved the creative field even when I was younger, I wanted to act, make films, draw basically do anything under the sun but I didn’t have the people to really put it together so I taught myself how to edit, film etc so I could just do it myself. 

McPherson: What has been the best moment you’ve had so far on the app?

Morris: The best moment I’ve had on this app is probably anytime in Aruba. Gil, Jayden, Colton, the twins, Ian, Gilean and everyone else in this little familia is amazing and to know that I didn’t know them a couple months ago is crazy because I feel like I’ve known them for so long at this point and memories we have created are unforgettable. 

McPherson: What has been the worst moment you’ve had so far on the app?

Morris: Probably when I put a lot of hard work into a video and no one sees it, that’s a little disheartening but it’s ok next video will be better.  McPherson: Do you think the friendships you’ve made with other creators will last?

Morris: I hope so! I know some of us will drift apart but there are some that I am pretty sure will last a long time.  McPherson: Are there any new original characters secrets you could share? Backstories, new characters?

Morris: I have a new character I’m working on where her band and her are cursed and anytime they play their music they turn into these “creatures” but apart from that new characters are still in the works. Secrets wise the only secret I can think of is a lot of people don’t know that Frenchie kisses her victims on the cheek after she kills them. [Frenchie is Caoimhe’s mafia character.]

McPherson: Do you see yourself moving into more social media apps anytime soon?

Morris: Probably I would love to do more YouTube stuff but I think right now TikTok is good enough for me!
