I picked up Freya so she could do her homework before we had dinner with Colten and Kailani. I’d once been angry with them for helping Katherine leave me, but I had later realised that they had done everything they could to help Katherine save our relationship.
Now they invited me and Freya over for dinner once a week. It was a great excuse to see Freya between her weekend visits, and Colten and Kailani’s youngest son, Samuel, was her best friend. He always came over when she was visiting me.
Samuel was only a month younger than her. I remembered how Kailani and Katherine had bonded over being pregnant together when we first moved in.
Their oldest son, Charlie, was a few years older, just starting high school.
Freya found him fascinating, and he was always nice to her, but obviously not too interested in playing with younger kids. Even so, Freya somehow often talked him into it, much to Samuel’s annoyance.
Charlie was just entering that rebellious teenage phase, and I knew Colten and Kailani had some problems with his attitude recently. But still, it was nice just seeing a normal, loving family.
Love.
What was love, anyway? I had tried so hard to love Katherine, but I couldn’t force it. I hadn’t been in love in over a decade. Not since Cecilia.
I felt my heart ache at the thought of her. Her smile, her eyes, her laugh. And her disappointment as she left me in the clinic, just after Freya was born. Had she hoped we would get back together?
I wondered what she was doing now. I briefly toyed with the idea of trying to look her up on social media, but no. I didn’t think I could handle seeing her with a husband and kids.
“Earth to Eric, are you even listening?”
“Oh, sorry, Colten, lost in my own thoughts for a bit.”
“Yeah, you have that post-therapy look. Did the doctor give you a lot to think about?”
I explained that I had to think about my long-term relationship goals and Colten smiled.
“Oh yeah, you should totally get back out there when you feel ready. I mean, now that even Katherine -“
He stopped abruptly, almost as if Kailani had just kicked him under the table. She glared at her husband and smiled innocently at me.
“Kailani? Please tell me, I know she tells you everything.”
“Alright… You should really hear this from her, but yes, she’s seeing someone. I mean, she’s obviously been dating on and off for the past few years, but she hadn’t found anyone serious enough to introduce to Freya until now.”
“To Freya? Has Freya met this guy, then?”
“I… I think so, his name is Conrad, he’s an actor like Colten. It seems pretty serious.”
Later that night, when Freya was asleep, I texted Katherine and asked for the whole story. Apparently, Conrad had talked about hiring someone to manage his stock portfolio, and Colten had recommended Katherine.
They’d gotten closer, and finally started dating a few months ago. It was going well. She had been planning to tell me soon, but couldn’t find the right time.
From what she told me, he seemed like a great guy. I knew Katherine would never let him near our daughter if he wasn’t – she wouldn’t even let me be around Freya when I was being a toxic idiot.
To my surprise, I discovered that I was happy for Katherine. I had felt incredibly guilty all these years for being the reason she ruined her marriage, but not give her the loving relationship she wanted. I genuinely hoped this Conrad guy could give her what I couldn’t. She deserved some happiness.
Then I felt a pang of worry.
He would become Freya’s stepdad. What if they moved in together? Would this man tuck in my daughter at night? Play basketball with her, comfort her when she cried?
Would my daughter start calling him dad? Suddenly I felt sick to my stomach.
I desperately wanted a drink.
“Don’t look at me like that, Zoe. No women, no booze. I know.”
I had to be strong, for Freya – and for myself. So I called my parents and cried instead.

Sunday, November 19 – Five Times X, One Time Y
Five Times Kim Thinks About Kissing Bryant and the One Time Kim Stops Thinking...
1.
Kim hadn’t seen Bryant all summer. He’d been away at summer camp while she was stuck in boring Middleton and she can’t wait to see him. It’s only been three months but at this age that seems like forever.
“Possible, did you miss me?” Kim turns around and runs straight for Bryant, almost knocking him over as she envelops him in a hug. He’s gotten slightly taller over the last few months which she feels isn’t fair but not a lot she can do about it. “I’ll take that as a yes then.”
Kim pulls back from the hug to look at Bryant then she smiles. Wait… when did Bryant get so cute? Has he always been cute? And this is the first time she’s noticing? Hmm… she wonders what it would be like to kiss him. No, that’s wrong because he’s your best friend and that would mess up your friendship.
“Kim, you okay?” Kim hadn’t realised she had zoned out there, “Sorry. I was thinking about what to get on my pizza later.” Bryant laughed then said, “Pepperoni, of course.”
“Duh!” Kim said before taking Bryant’s arm so they could walk back to her parents’ house. “Come on. My parents will be wondering where we are. They’re more excited than I am that you’re home.”
2.
Kim is on the sidelines in her cheerleader outfit, watching the football game and cheering on the players when she sees Bryant on the field. She waves at him and he waves back then she hears the other cheerleaders whispering about how cute he is and how they wish he’d go out with them.
Kim wouldn’t care if it was anyone else but this was her best friend they were objectifying and she wasn’t going to have it. So she looked at them and the way she looked at them shut them all up. The only thing was, the other cheerleaders weren’t wrong because Bryant was cute.
It was just a shame he was her best friend and she couldn't do anything that would jeopardise her friendship with him. No matter how much she wanted to kiss those lips of his. It had been a couple of years since she had thought about that and she was going to blame the other cheerleaders for reminding her how cute he was. She just needed to forget about kissing Bryant because it wouldn’t do her any good and she needed to move on.
3.
Kim was asked out by Nate Colten to Junior Prom and she said yes. He was very cute and a nice guy so that was good. She knew he wouldn’t try anything and she’d have a good night. It was all coming into place and tonight she was hoping to have her first proper kiss even if it wasn’t with who she wanted it to be with.
Still, she’d had plenty of kisses over the years due to spin the bottle and truth or dare. Then there was that sloppy first kiss when she was thirteen with Bobby Smith but she was determined to forget all that with a kiss tonight.
Kim was dancing with Nate to a slow song, just moving to the music and the boy could dance plus her dress was perfect for this song. She looked up at Nate who leaned down and placed his lips on hers.
It felt like magic.
At least for a brief moment because then she looked across the dancefloor and saw Bryant dancing with some upper classmate. Of course, he was with a Senior but all she wanted to do was go over there and pull him away from his date and kiss him.
Kim knew she couldn't do that because she had a date and also that would just make things awkward for her and Bryant which is the last thing she wanted. Instead, she looked at Nate and smiled while she continued to dance with him.
4.
Kim is leaving to go to Swynlake now that she’s graduated from Middleton High. She isn’t sure about leaving to go halfway across the world for university but if she doesn’t go then she might regret it. She will miss her family but she knows this is the right step for her even if Bryant doesn’t agree.
Kim hasn’t spoken to Bryant in a few weeks, not since their huge argument about her going to England and maybe not coming back. She told him it wasn’t forever and that they could FaceTime each other all the time but he said it wasn’t the same. She had hoped he would have come to say goodbye but maybe not.
“Wait!” Kim hears someone shouting then she sees Bryant running down the street towards her parents’ house. “Don’t leave yet.”
Kim looks back at her parents who nod for her to go speak to him, she’s got about five minutes before they need to head to the airport.
“I didn’t think you would come.”
“I couldn't let you leave with us fighting. It wouldn’t be fair.”
Kim pulls him in for a hug, not wanting to let go because she knew deep down he would have come so why did she lose hope? She knows better now. She pulls back to look at him, “I’m glad you did. I couldn't go without us making up. It wouldn’t feel right.”
Bryant smiled at her, “I’m sorry for how I acted. This is such a good opportunity for you and I’m so proud of you going halfway across the world. My independent bestie!”
Kim giggled, “I’m sorry too.” She thinks about it again. Kissing him. This time, a goodbye kiss but she doesn’t want to open that can of worms. Not now, that she’ll be halfway across the world and he’ll be here in Middleton. It’s not fair to him or her.
“Don’t worry about it. We’re good and now you can go off to Swynlake.” Kim nods, wondering how she ended up winning the best friend lottery because Bryant is so amazing.
“Bye Byrant. Take care.” Kim gives him one last hug before running back to her parents and the car. She waves at Bryant who waves back and she gets in the car, headed straight for the airport.
5.
Kim still couldn't believe her mom and dad had arranged for Bryant to join them on their trip to Swynlake. Kim hadn’t seen him in three years and he had gotten a lot hotter in those three years. He was still her best friend but there was no denying he was an attractive young man, even her mom had made comments over the years as to why Kim wasn’t with him. She’d obviously replied that she didn’t want to ruin the friendship and she was beginning to regret keeping that stance.
He probably had some hot girlfriend back in Middleton, someone Kim couldn't compete with and she was still trying to get over her ‘crush’ on Phineas. It was probably best she not do anything with Bryant, especially kissing. No matter how much she wanted to.
“You okay?” Kim hadn’t realised she had zoned out. She needed to stop doing that. “I’m good, Bry. I just missed you.”
Bryant grinned, “I missed you too.”
And 1.
Kim was ready to get back to Swynlake. It had been nice to be back in Middleton but it wasn’t where she was meant to be right now, Swynlake still needed her and she wanted to finish her studies.
It meant saying goodbye to Bryant again. At least for a bit.
It felt like three years ago. At least this time they weren’t fighting.
“We’ll see each other soon. Don’t worry about it.” Kim said to Bryant who nodded.
“I know but it doesn’t mean it’s not hard. I hate saying goodbye to you.”
Kim laughed, “Then don’t say goodbye. Say something else.”
Kim didn’t know what it was but the way that Bryant looked at her and the way he’d been acting lately made her think about something. Was this the right time? Should she kiss him and damn the consequences?
They stood there in awkward silence so she did the one thing she thought would ease it and leaned up and pressed her lips to his. She pulled back, unsure of what to do then Bryant leaned forward to kiss her. She placed her arms behind his neck and leaned into the kiss. After a minute or two, they both pulled back and looked at each other before smiling.
It was the right time then.

algee smith & he/him/ cis male ‷ watch out , colten pierce has crash-landed into roswell !! they look twenty-seven years old and celebrate their birthday on the first of april they are from queens, nyc, reside in tripp’s trailer park and are currently working as clerk at alien gulch. one thing you should know about them is he thinks we are all in one giant simulation.‷
Name: Colten Pierce
Age: 27
Sexuality: Bisexual (closeted bisexual)
Occupation: Clerk @ Alien Gulch
+ traits: loyal, adventurous, emphatic listener
- traits: self-destructive, reckless, impulsive
tw: addiction mention, car accident mention, death mention
Colrten was born to a young mother who only ever wanted to love her son and give him the best life possible. Unfortunately for a young mother at the age of sixteen this was seemingly impossible, especially when there was little to no support coming from the parents of the mother or his father (who was just as young). When she was seventeen, Colten’s mother ran away with him and some random guy who promised her the world.
The guy turned out to be a real piece of work. One year into the relationship was filled with anything but the honeymoon stage. Two years into the relationship with his mother the man ended up leaving her pregnant with Colten’s little sister and disappeared from their lives entirely.
The older Colten got the more the tried to help his mother out. He loved her efforts in attempting to keep a stable income but it was not an easy upbringing to say the least. By the time he was ten Colten felt like a full grown adult, especially when it came to caring for his little sister.
His mother, bless her soul, worked two jobs and one odd one every so often in an attempt to keep the household afloat. For the most part, it was Colten caring for his little sister, Sophie.
(tw: accident, death) One day while Colten was out visiting the park with his sister tragedy happened. He normally didn’t get distracted from watching Sophie…except today. He was arguing about a basketball game score when one of the kids he was in the middle of arguing with pointed in the direction Sophie was running off to. By the time Colten turned to see what was happening all he saw was his sister disappear beneath a semi truck and the rest was a tragic story.
Colten never forgave himself for that either. It showed in the way he became more detached from everyone around him, how he often woke up in a cold sweat and screaming, and it showed in the way he cried almost every night while holding Sophie’s favorite stuffed lamb.
And his mother changed after that. She no longer seemed as kind towards him as she had always seemed. When he cried for Sophie she would only roll her eyes and drink more. Her boyfriends got worse too. Overall, life got worse.
Much like his mother, Colten ran away from home at seventeen. Unlike his mother, however, he didn’t run off with someone who promised him the world. He ran off to find himself in the world and at the same time travel. He took his guitar and some clothes with him.
His guitar (Lucy), and singing, had always been a natural talent for Colten. It’s a talent he used to make money as he lived from city to city. He had always dreamed of becoming a rockstar one day, but that was just a dream
From eighteen up until recently the guy has been struggling with drugs. He has tried multiple times to lean off either, but in the end, as much as he tries, Colten always falls back into old habits. It’s to the point that the guy doesn’t see much light anymore and has accepted that this is who he was meant to be. Someone who is just waiting for the next high in life in a lot of ways.
He found Roswell, New Mexico and honestly ended up enjoying the small town from day one. He found a home in Tripp’s Trailer Park & a job as a clerk at Alien Gulch. It’s been about a year now that he’s living in Roswell and he doesn’t see himself moving any time soon. Although he’s become more discrete with his habits, he still silently struggles with his addiction. He has a big heart and uses it to help any youth he see’s that may be homeless or in need of a helping hand. You can often find him voulnteering at the nearest soup kitchen or shelter. If not then he’s offering his spot to anyone who many need a place to crash in for a night or two.
He really loves attempting to lift the spirits of today's youth and help them out as much as possible. He isn’t shy, either, to talk about his addiction to them and tell them the horror stories is has brought. Even if he doesn’t mention he still struggles with it on and off. He’d do anything to help the youth of today out as much as possible. Anything to prevent anyone from going through the path he went on.
You’ll always catch him causing a ruckus somewhere over something. Always ready for a laugh and to bust out his guitar at any open mic night.
He’s bisexual. He hasn’t opened up about it because he’s very shy about his sexuality. He’s never had a real boyfriend or gone all the way with a guy, but he’s often thought about it. He has kissed guys here and there but he’s always chalked it up to them just being drunk and it meaning nothing.
Oh...please don’t get him started on how we all live in a simulation and glitches in the matrix. He WILL NOT shut up about it once you do.

Chapter 32
Never Grow Up
Less than a year later, Samuel and I were married.
The wedding was everything I’d dreamed of. I’m sure our parents would happily have paid for an enormous wedding if we’d asked them to. But that wasn’t our style.
All I wanted was a small, intimate affair with our closest friends and family while I said ‘I do’ to the love of my life. We rented the Myshuno Observatory. It almost felt like my grandma Cora was with us in spirit.
Even Charlie showed up. I knew it meant a lot to Samuel, although his brother couldn’t stay for long.
At least he was there for the ceremony, and he came over to congratulate us afterwards.
He said he had a flight to catch, his band was on tour at the moment. I suspected that he was also trying to avoid talking to Colten and Kailani.
I wondered if Charlie actually preferred his solitude, or if he secretly wanted to be a bigger part of his family than he was.
I was grateful that I got along with my own family, especially my sister Grace. I couldn’t believe that she would be starting high school after the summer, it felt like yesterday that I’d taught her how to cross the monkey bars in our backyard.
By the time Grace and I headed inside for the reception, Charlie was gone and Kailani was talking to Jessica. Jessica had volunteered to do the decorations, beautiful blush-coloured roses everywhere, my favourite.
We kept the wedding alcohol-free for my dad, and Griffin and Daria had offered to do all the food for us as a wedding gift. It was impressive, the entire menu was vegan since Griffin had also stopped eating meat after his first visit to the cadaver lab during medical training. I didn’t blame him, it sounded horrific. Samuel hadn’t seemed as bothered.
Over by the cake, Conrad was making my dad and Cecilia crack up with outrageous anecdotes. It was strange to see my parents interact with each other. It had happened before, of course, they had celebrated my birthday together a few times when I was younger, but I couldn’t remember if they had been in the same room since my mom and Conrad moved to Del Sol Valley.
Looking at the four of them now, it was impossible to tell that things had ever been bad between my parents. Still, I couldn’t imagine two people less likely to work out. They both had a certain desperation to them, and they both needed someone to temper them, not stoke the flames.
Conrad, with his extravagant approach to life, gave my mother a safe outlet, a way to release all that intensity so she didn’t blow up.
Cecilia, kind but unwavering, calmed my father down and turned his particular brand of chaos into something less destructive.
But who was I?
Was I like my dad, prone to holding on in an attempt to do the right thing until I finally self-destructed?
Or was I more like my mother, desperately trying to make people love me until I gave up and left them in the dust?
I needed to do better than both of them. I wanted everything to work out. I shook my head lightly, trying to chase away the dark thoughts. This was my wedding day, why was I only thinking about disaster?
I went to find Samuel. He pulled me close and kissed me.
This was what I needed. My husband.
Samuel would temper me, like Conrad and Cecilia tempered my parents.
We would be fine.
By the time we were back in our bed that night, I was both exhausted and deliriously happy.
I took Samuel’s hand, marvelling at the ring on his finger.
“I can’t believe we’re actually married.”
He sent me a mischievous smile.
“Me neither. But you better let go of my hand. I need it for something.”
I was glad that we’d had some practice over the last year, otherwise I might have chickened out of my wedding night completely.
Samuel was gentle, always making sure that I was satisfied.
A small part of me wished he’d be a little less restrained, that he would lose himself in it, the same way he made me lose myself, but it was still good.

Talking about my love for my OC with @xxqueenofdragonsxx. This is my Zahira as best as I can make her, though someone awesome may be drawing me some amazing fan art of her so fingers crossed.
ZAHIRA ZELENA ZACARIAS (ZEE):
Magizoologist, works for the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures for the Ministry of Magic.
Born 9th April, 1964 to parents Michael Ivanovich (Misha) Zacarias and Magnolia Jackson Zacarias. Misha, a Muggleborn Russian Auror who is following the trail of a dark wizard and finds himself in Paris where he meets the American witch Magnolia Jackson. They fall in love and get married and Magnolia moves to Moscow to be with him and then when Zee is six, her mother is killed.
I think that it was a gruesome death, a curse that tortured her for days before she finally succumbed to her death. They were living in Russia at the time and Zee was with her Baba and Deda, as she was only six, and her mother had gone into town to do some shopping. The dark wizard was stalking her and cursed her. She was left alone in an alley to die and wasn’t found for almost six hours, by then, the curse had taken over too much of her and any attempt at saving her life was impossible. She’d lost her mind and Zee was never able to say goodbye. Magnolia didn’t even recognize Misha when he found her which was part of why it hurt Misha so much to lose her in the end.
Misha meets Sorcha Brown when Zee is eight, a freelance journalist from Scotland. Zee grew up travelling between Scotland and Moscow and she always loved animals. She spent her summers visiting her American grandparents on their ranch in Toccoa, Georgia where her grandmother owns a 50s diner called Flo’s and her grandfather is chief of police. Her stepmother is the mother she grew up with. Mama, seeing Zee’s love for animals always allowed her to bring home strays. Her father continued to work in Russia, travelling back and forth via international portkey every day when they spent time in Scotland. And when it came time for her to go to school, they decided to send her to the wizarding school in Russia — the Koldovstoretz School of Magic because it had such an amazing Care of Magical Creatures program. She speaks fluent French, Russian, and Mermish because of her upbringing and her career and a little bit of Greek.
She has 4 tattoos:
Gold and green tribal elephant on right side of ribs
Red and gold dragon across spine
Black niffler on back of her neck
Zee tattoo over scar - deep green vines with bright blue orchids scattered from the top of her left hip down the side of her thigh, wrapping around her knee, Lady Godiva hidden in the vines covering her scar lying on a bed of blue orchids ending at her ankle. I AM WOMAN written on one side, HEAR ME ROAR, written on the other.
Zee found him napping on the sofa and she smiled at the sight of him, bending to kiss his forehead. Her curls tickled his face, a small smile on his lips. Not wanting to disturb him, she hurried upstairs to pack the rest of her bag. She changed into a short halter dress over her new bikini and was admiring her calf in the mirror when he came in.
His eyes met hers in the mirror and the look in them sent desire raking through her.
“When did you get home?”
“Maybe fifteen minutes ago? You looked so peaceful having your nap.”
“I was resting my eyes,” he said, making her grin.
“Right.”
Sirius moved towards her, his eyes trailing down her body. “You look fucking gorgeous.” His gaze stopped on her leg, a brow rising. “You got a new tat?”
Zee held onto his arm as he picked up her leg to examine the new tattoo. She had gotten Lady Godiva. She’d done her panther’s sleek form in a dark black outline but other than her golden eyes, she’d coloured the panther in with flowered camouflage. Purple perennials and pink tulips, red roses and blue lilacs that brightened her leg and covered every inch of the ugly burn scar to the back of her knee. Deep green vines and leaves surrounded the outline of the panther, framing the words written down either side of the panther in cursive: I Am Woman and on the other side it continued with: Hear Me Roar.
“Fuck, that’s sexy,” Sirius murmured, his fingertips tracing the words.
“Yeah?” Zee said. “I didn’t want to look at my burn anymore so I wanted to cover it with something beautiful.”
“And the Reddy lyrics?”
She grinned. “Points to you.”
Sirius let go of her leg and bent his head to kiss her. “I love it. But you were sexy with the scar too.”
Zee slipped her arms around his neck. “And that, Mr Black, is one of the many reasons why I love you.”
Sirius slid his hands up her back into her hair. “Let’s go shag on the beach.”
She laughed as he let her go and picked up their bags. “Sounds perfect.”
As he walked out the door, she couldn’t help but think that she had never loved anyone more than the man before her. She didn’t know what the future held for her, but she did know that her future was nothing without Sirius Black and Harry Potter. (Excerpt from A Second Chance, chapter 213)
Zee’s wand was made by Gregorvich and it is chestnut as the wood meshes with her love of animals, I think it’s short like her, only 15 cm in length and her core is from a coral reef. Her wand core gives the owner patience, someone with a coral reef core knows how to bring things to fruition, provide protection for all, as well as generate longevity. They have a knack for deflecting disaster, whatever form it takes. They are also loving, nurturing, and healing; are a source of enduring friendship and support and often the glue that holds the ship together. I thought it sounded very much like Zee.
She stands no taller than 156 cm (roughly 5′1 and 3/4) and often wears 4 inch heels as if she was born in them, preferably her heeled cowboy boots. She has long dark brown hair with golden caramel highlights mixed through it. Her grandmother on her mum’s side was African-American so her skin is like a caramel toffee. She loves bright red lipstick and big earrings. She wears a white gold and turquoise turtle belly button ring and usually has smaller hoops or studs in her ears above the big hoops. As shown above and mentioned before, she is very curvy, hourglass and I picture her body type like Jaydah Doll, but her face is the gorgeous model at the top (I saw her and thought Zee).
Her pet is a panther named Lady Godiva. She rescued her from Muggles who were hunting her and her pack in Kenya. Her parents were killed and she was the only cub that she could find so she nurtured her and kept her safe. Why Godiva?
“I always admired her bravery; standing up for what she wanted and doing the only thing that she could do at the time to make her stand. No one would listen to her and she had no power and no ability to use weapons. She wasn’t a witch with powers to sway them so she set out on a horse, completely nude, and she got the attention she wanted. She made her mark. I found Lady Godiva in Kenya, hiding from the Muggles who had shot and killed her family, when I rescued her and confronted the Muggles, she jumped from my arms and stood in front of me, growling at them, almost daring them to fight her to get to me. I thought that she was making her stand, a cub with no power of her own, but she was trying. So I named her Godiva.” (Excerpt from A Second Chance, chapter 65)
Her grandfather on her dad’s side was a Muggle and veteran of the Second World War. He drove a 1937 BSA M20 and it’s hers now. She loves motorcycles and getting her hands dirty. She’s an incredible cook. She likes to read mystery, horror, and romance novels. She travels for her job and has been all over the world, but has recently been enjoying her time working in the menagerie within the Ministry of Magic and helping to organize it.
As to the Koldovstoretz School of Magic, I like to think it’s hidden somewhere deep in Russia and that it looks like the ruins Balga Castle to prevent anyone from finding it, but when you get through the warding it opens up and looks the Vologda Kremlin and Saint Sophia Cathedral, just gorgeous Russian architecture -- but not as large as Hogwarts’ castle. It says that they played a version of Quidditch there where they flew on uprooted trees instead of broomsticks -- which is another reason why I think Zee was never big into playing the sport herself. Also I imagine her as short and curvy, which means she may not have great balance on a broom, and she loves riding the motorbike and likes the Muggle machine more than a broomstick if she has to choose.
As to her family tree:
The Jacksons:
Colten (Muggle) and Florence Jackson

Iowa beats Iowa State in one of the most Iowa-Iowa State games ever
If you like punting and defense, then this was the game for you.
Final
Iowa 13, Iowa State 3. The Hawkeyes snuffed out their state rivals’ offense, had the superior punting game on the night (it’s like half of what I wrote about in the updates below), and got just enough offense to put the game away in the final minutes.
Of all the extremely grunt-and-punt ¡El Assico! games in history, this one is right up there. Take a look, y’all:
Head to Black Heart Gold Pants to celebrate, Hawkeyes. Cyclones, you’re headed to Wide Right, Natty Lite.
Fourth quarter
Iowa 13, Iowa State 3, 1:53. The game’s first turnover is a strip sack in Iowa’s favor. We’re done here. I can taste it.
Iowa 13, Iowa State 3, 2:32. Iowa did another punt inside the 20, but then there was a penalty. We’re so close.
Iowa 13, Iowa State 3, 3:33. With I! O! W! A! chants resounding around Kinnick, Iowa State once again got basically nothing going on offense, despite a helpful PI by the Hawkeyes. Another punt error by the Clones in this, the Valhalla of punting: a punt interference flag. That oughta do it. Please, Lord, let that do it.
Iowa 13, Iowa State 3, 4:47. A TOUCHDOWN!! The Hawkeyes went UP-TEMPO for much of the likely door-slammer, with Mekhi Sargent running in to complete the 13-play, 83-yard jaunt.
Either way, I’m beginning to think the under is safe.
Iowa 6, Iowa State 3, 11:17. GOOD COREY DUNN IS BACK. Iowa State’s mercurial punter zaps one out of bounds at Iowa’s 17. We’re up to 338 combined yards between both teams. An FCS QB currently has more than that by himself against Ole Miss.
Iowa 6, Iowa State 3, 13:56. Iowa missed a 50-yard field goal. I’m sorry for the terse update. I can only say so many things about special teams plays.
Third quarter
Iowa 6, Iowa State 3, 1:58. What appeared to be an ankle injury to ISU QB Kyle Kempt had backup Zeb Noland warming up. Kempt stayed in for a fourth-and-1 throw in Hawkeye territory, batted down by Iowa.
Iowa 6, Iowa State 3. Through 36 minutes, Iowa had 90 yards. On one heave from Nate Stanley to Ihmir Smith-Marsette to launch this drive, the Hawkeyes gained 45. That set up the only kick sweeter than a punt: a field goal. Significant mood:

Iowa State 3, Iowa 3. The Hawkeyes remain the state’s greatest punting team on the day, as Colten Rastetter pinned the Cyclones at their own 9, setting up a three-and-out, but then a mighty bounceback punt by ISU’s Corey Dunn, a 57-yarder! We’ve got a true duel going.
Iowa State 3, Iowa 3. The lesser Corey Dunn is back, as ISU’s opening punt of the second half goes for a scant 35 yards. Truly a Dr. Jekyll situation at punter for the Clones.
Halftime
Iowa State 3, Iowa 3.

Second quarter
Iowa State 3, Iowa 3, 1:25. COREY DUNN REDEEMED. After two shanks that set up Iowa’s only score, Iowa State’s punter pinned the Hawkeyes at their 6 with a 58-yard thumper. MY, how the punt tables have turned.
Iowa State 3, Iowa 3. Again, the Hawkeyes completely control the war of punts, as ISU’s Corey Dunn has shanked his second out of bounds. Iowa ball at the Clones’ 28, which turned into a field goal this time.
Iowa State 3, Iowa 0. Iowa’s punting preeminence continues. QB Nate Stanley unfurled a poocher that bounced out of bounds inside ISU’s 10, concluding a contentious, eight-play drive. We’re on pace for about 400 total yards in this game, just as God intended.

Iowa State 3, Iowa 0. Well, Iowa’s still winning the punt battle. David Montgomery got an 11-yard run on ISU’s latest drive, but the series ended with a mere 37-yard punt.
First quarter
Iowa State 3, Iowa 0. After Iowa State shamed itself with a 14-yard shanked punt, the most grievous of all ¡EL ASSICO! sins, the Hawkeyes capitalized by gaining one yard and missing a short field goal.
Iowa State 3, Iowa 0. The Hawkeyes have yet to do much of anything on what most people refer to as offense, but the real star of the show, punter Colten Rastetter, just drilled a 51-yarder into the corner.
Iowa State 3, Iowa 0. After an Iowa three-and-out, the Clones stormed (Iowa State term) through a 13-play, 71-yard drive that ended with a goal line stand and a field goal. ISU’s Kyle Kempt was 5 of 6 to four different receivers on the journey.
Preview
Iowa isn’t a big state, but it takes its football seriously. Saturday’s showdown between Iowa State and Iowa is proof.
At $111 just to get in, the 2018 edition of the Cy-Hawk series is the second-most expensive game to attend in Week 2 of the college football season. That’s more than it would cost to watch Clemson and Texas A&M duke it out, pricier than a ticket to Penn State’s rivalry-renewing chapter vs. Pittsburgh, and several times more costly than it would be to attend UCLA’s tilt at Oklahoma. The only game that exceeds it? An SEC East-defining showdown between Georgia and South Carolina.
Neither the Cyclones or Hawkeyes are ranked. Neither is expected to win even a division crown. Saturday’s game is popular for one reason only; a healthy dose of in-state hate. Let’s dig in.
Time, TV channel, and streaming info
Time: 5 p.m. ET
Location: Kinnick Stadium, Iowa City, IA
TV: FOX
Streaming: Fox Sports Go
Odds: Iowa is favored by 4 points.
Iowa State vs. Iowa news:
Iowa State only got four minutes into its season opener before storms washed it out. So what did we learn?
Clyde Williams is the greatest coach in Iowa State history. But he was also a Hawkeye.
Unfortunately for the good people of Ames, that team was the University of Iowa. Long before he took over as the head football coach at Iowa State, Clyde Williams was leading their in-state rivals to back-to-back undefeated seasons in 1899 and 1900 while directing one of the most potent offenses in college football.
Remember when Iowa State won five straight Cy-Hawk Trophies? Wide Right & Natty Light remembers.
Kirk Ferentz doesn’t think ISU’s canceled game last week is an advantage for either side.
Yeah, I don’t think I have experience in this kind of a deal where one team played and one team didn’t. Probably the good news for their side was it didn’t take long to grade the film on Sunday. They had five plays on each side, I think. They got done with that, and they’re moving into our preparation, so they got a jump on us there. But I’ve never had experience. I’m not smart enough to know if it was good, bad or indifferent. But it’s just one of those things, and it’s just how it shook out, so it’s how it goes going into the game.
Who will provide the offense for Iowa State?
The Cyclones lost a big piece of their offense when Allen Lazard, the highest-rated recruit the program had seen in decades, graduated. The 6’5 wideout left behind some big shoes to fill after hauling in 17 touchdown catches the previous two seasons. Deep threat Hakeem Butler is primed to pick up that slack after a breakout 2017 — but he’s the only one of the team’s top four receivers to return in 2018.
So can Butler handle WR1 duties without Lazard drawing the primary focus of opposing defenses? Or will Iowa State be forced to double down on 1,100-yard rusher David Montgomery, an already-overworked back to averaged a not-so-impressive 4.4 yards per carry last fall? Last year’s passing offense gave ISU the chops to win even when he had bad days; the ‘18 team doesn’t seem to have that feature.
Iowa State vs. Iowa prediction:
Iowa State had its season opener against South Dakota State canceled due to inclement weather, so this will be the first time we see the Cyclones in 2018. Will they be rusty? Angry about missing an opportunity for a likely FCS win? Jittery for the first game of the season in a hostile environment? Either way, S&P+ doesn’t like their chances; ISU has only a 38 percent chance to hoist the Cy-Hawk Trophy Saturday.

Mourners gather at Humboldt Broncos arena after multiple deaths in crash
HUMBOLDT, Saskatchewan — A hockey arena became the epicenter of grief for a small Canadian town Sunday, as friends and relatives gathered to mourn 15 people killed after a semi-trailer slammed into a bus carrying a junior hockey team in western Canada.
Fourteen people were also injured, including some critically, in a collision that left a country, its national sport and the hockey-obsessed town of Humboldt reeling.
The bus had 29 passengers, including the driver, when it crashed at about 5 p.m. Friday on Highway 35, police said. Among the dead are Broncos coach Darcy Haugan, team captain Logan Schatz and radio announcer Tyler Bieber.

Forward Jaxon Joseph, who is the son of former NHL player Chris Joseph, along with forwards Logan Hunter, Conner Lukan and Evan Thomas, and defensemen Stephen Wack, Adam Herold, Xavier Labelle and Logan Boulet were among the dead, according to family members, friends or former teams. Assistant coach Mark Cross, bus driver Glen Doerksen and stats keeper Brody Hinz, who was 18, were also killed.
Boulet’s godfather, Neil Langevin, said matches had been made for all of Boulet’s vital organs and that his family would stay by his side until surgery begins at 2 a.m. local time. Langevin also said that Boulet’s other organs would be donated to science.
Herold, who would have turned 17 on Thursday, played for the Regina Pat Canadians hockey team until just weeks ago. He was sent to join the Broncos for their playoff round when the Pat Canadians’ season wrapped up, said John Smith, the Pat Canadians’ manager.
Norman Mattock, a longtime season-ticket holder, said his neighbor housed player Morgan Gobeil. The defenseman was severely injured and remains in serious but stable condition, Mattock said.
He said players become part of the community fabric, doing volunteer work or serving in restaurants. Three players who billeted by the same family all died in the crash, he added.
“They lost them all,” Mattock said.
The names of all the dead and injured have not been released by police.
A vigil will be held on the hockey team’s home ice Sunday night; a makeshift stage and hundreds of chairs sit ready for the memorial. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau plans to attend.
“An entire country is in shock and mourning,” Trudeau said. “To the entire Humboldt community: We are here for you. As neighbors, as friends and as Canadians, we grieve alongside you.”
In a tweet, President Donald Trump said he called Trudeau to offer his condolences to the families of victims.
Residents of this town of less than 6,000 have been leaving flowers, team jerseys and personal tributes on the steps of the arena’s entrance, forming a makeshift memorial. One tribute included a Kraft dinner box, which was a favorite meal of Thomas. A bouquet of pink roses adorned the box, which read “to Evan, game day special, love your billet brother and sister Colten and Shelby.”
Canadians have become mourners as they have learned more about the identities of the deceased on the bus that was carrying the Humboldt Broncos to a crucial playoff game Friday against the Nipawin Hawks.
“It’s small town anywhere. We’re devastated,” said hockey club vice president Randolph MacLean. “At the center of this, we have 15 souls who’ll never go home again. We have 29 lives that will never be the same.”
MacLean said the community comes together at the arena on game nights that draw 800 to 1,000 people to the stands.
“It’s an energy that spreads through the town with road signs saying ‘game tonight,’ tickets for sale everywhere,” he said.
As is the case with small town hockey across Canada, he said, the arena is not just a recreation facility but a focus of community life with the hockey team at its center.
Canadian police said the truck driver, who was not hurt, was initially detained but has since been released and provided with mental health assistance. Royal Canadian Mounted Police Assistant Commissioner Curtis Zablocki said it’s too early to state a cause for the crash.
Hassan Masri, an emergency room doctor at Saskatoon’s Royal University Hospital who has done work in war-torn Syria, said the crash reminded him of an airstrike.
The hockey world was stunned and saddened to hear the news of a bus crash that killed 15 members of the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team. Said Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock: “It’s got to rip the heart out of your chest.”
Photographs of the wreckage showed the twisted trailer with most of its wheels in the air and the bus on its side with its back portion destroyed. The force of the crash sent both vehicles into the ditch at the northwest corner of the intersection.
Aerial footage showed the roof of the bus peeled back. The trailer of the truck lay nearby in a shattered mess, with bags of its peat moss cargo scattered all around. The tractor part of the truck was intact, lying on its passenger side.
The tractor-trailer would have had to come to a full stop before crossing over the highway that the bus was traveling on. There is a stand of trees on the southeast corner of the intersection, limiting visibility of the approach on both roads.
Michelle Straschnitzki, who lives in Airdrie, Alberta, said her 18-year old son Ryan was transported to a hospital in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
“We talked to him, but he said he couldn’t feel his lower extremities, so I don’t know what’s going on,” she said. “I am freaking out. I am so sad for all of the teammates, and I am losing my mind.”
Police said a lot of issues have to be investigated, including weather conditions at the time and any mechanical issues with the vehicles.
The tragedy brought to mind an accident in 1986, when the Swift Current Broncos team bus slid off an icy highway and crashed in late December, killing four players.
The Humboldt Broncos are a close-knit team who dyed their hair blond for the playoffs. While most of the players were from elsewhere in western Canada, they were put up by families in the small town of Humboldt.
“We’re all hurting,” said hockey arena cook Diane Sawatzky. “We’ve become like a family and try to help each other.”
Earlier in the weekend, Humboldt Mayor Rob Muench, wearing a green and yellow Broncos team jersey, hugged people as they came to the Elgar Petersen Arena in the Saskatchewan town to comfort each other and learn more.
“It’s overwhelming. It’s been tough on everybody,” Muench said. “We’re a small community. Some of those kids have been on the team for a number of years. A lot grew up in the community, and everybody knows each other.”
Multiple crisis workers were assisting relatives and friends.
The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League is a junior “A” hockey league under Hockey Canada, which is part of the Canadian Junior Hockey League. It’s open to North American-born players between the ages of 16 and 20.
