Appearance: Stella stands at roughly 5’9”, though she looks taller most of the time due to her love of heels. She has tanned skin after spending her life on a warm, sunny planet. She has the curvy hourglass figure most magazine covers flaunt and shapely limbs to make her look like a model. Stella’s eyes are a brownish hazel color, and she has lengthy blonde hair with bangs over her forehead. She has defined facial features to go along with her conventionally attractive appearance. Her ears aren’t very pointed when compared to some of the other characters’, making her look a bit more human. Stella tends to wear cropped shirts to show off her figure, though she is self-conscious about the way her stomach looks, something she does her best to hide when she has a particularly bad day. Her clothing shows off a lot of skin whether it be a shirt or skirt due to the bright, sunny planet that she grew up on. Stella enjoys wearing heels for shoes to add a bit of extra height and make her seem more imposing, though she’s usually 5’11” at tallest with her heels since she thinks any taller of heels aren’t that practical.

Personality: Stella, at least on the outside, comes off as a stereotypical popular girl. She seems superficial and boy-crazy, always going after the week’s most attractive guy her age. She’s openly obsessed with the way she looks and has a passion for fashion above all else. Stella can get sarcastic and defensive easily, almost to the point of being blunt or rude at times. Behind this mask, however, Stella is a much softer, more sensitive girl. She fears being treated as an outcast or being tossed aside since she’s always believed her worth is found in how valid others believe her to be. Years of bullying transformed her into a young woman who taught herself to fake confidence rather than actually feel it. She’s much smarter and nerdy than she would originally show, not wanting to be made fun of by others for her stranger interests. Stella’s passion for clothing design is the one thing that isn’t fake, as she’s always loved making clothing for herself since she sees it as a perfect outlet for her creativity that won’t lead to her being picked on. Stella suffers from dysmorphia, having been made fun of for her body in the past. She hates getting comments on her body since she was picked on for weighing more as a child. Her obsession with appearance is a defensive mechanism to keep from being made fun of again for her weight or other aspects of her appearance. She gets snarky and sarcastic quickly since she uses it to defend herself from those who might want to hurt her, which can cause her to get snippy at times. Stella opens up more to people who show legitimate interest in her as a person rather than just her future power or appearance, and she lets herself be vulnerable about her hidden insecurities around them.

Background: Stella was born into an unhappy marriage between her parents, Radius and Luna. Radius and Luna were set up in an arranged marriage when they were children, and while they were friends growing up, being forced to live together by the politicians of Solaria drove them apart. They fought often, and Stella grew apart from them after years of listening to them bicker. She ate out of stress to keep from thinking about how horrible her family’s dynamic was, causing her to become overweight. When she went to school after a particular summer of horrible overeating, Stella was bullied and picked on relentlessly. Stella suffered greatly for not being conventionally attractive between her needing glasses and weighing more than her classmates. She grew to suffer from dysmorphia as a result. She was also teased for her interests in stereotypically ‘nerdy’ or ‘masculine’ subjects such as sports or painting. Stella grew to resent both such subjects after years of their being the cause of her harassment. She got sick of all the bullying after years, not going to her parents about it since she knew it would cause an argument. She thought they had more important things to think about as well. To keep from getting hurt further, Stella forced herself to keep from eating for quite a while, causing her to become sickly and incredibly thin. She wound up in the hospital from her lack of food at one point when she was thirteen, and she told her parents about everything she had been suffering from. After this, Stella was told by Radius and Luna that she’s never going to not be worth their time and that she deserves to be happy regardless of what other people say. Stella’s unhealthy habits disappeared soon after this, and she got into the habit of telling herself that eating and being happy with herself is the least she can do for herself. While Stella is still seen as ultimately shallow, she isn’t openly mocked anymore, which as far as she is aware, is an improvement. She’s gotten better about loving herself since then as well, though she’s still not the best with expressing her feelings. Her parents announced their divorce the year before she started at Alfea, and while she’s been struggling to a life without both of her parents around all the time, she keeps in contact with them both since even if their marriage failed, they love Stella more than anything else in the world. She attended Alfea the year before the story starts but wound up leaving at semester after suffering from some mental health issues and struggles with her dorm mates. She returned the following year, gladly accepted by the school.

Other: Stella enjoys eating sweets when she’s not enjoying healthier foods, and after she eats a lot of sweets, she’s often seen going for a jog. She usually thinks over things while out on a run, which she does earlier on in the morning when the sun is first rising. This is the earliest Stella ever wakes up, as she’s never been a night owl or morning bird, instead preferring to sleep through both of these phases. She hides her grades from most people to try and fit in out of fear of being made fun of. In truth, Stella gets some of the best grades at Alfea, not that she’d ever tell anyone such. She enjoys tennis, and even if she was teased for liking sports as a child, she’s been getting back into it recently with Aisha and Flora. She also enjoys watching some animated shows (some cartoons, some anime), a guilty pleasure she shares with Tecna.

Position in Team: Stella acts as the second-in-command for the group and Bloom’s right hand. Stella is more pessimistic than Bloom is most of the time due to being harassed as a child so frequently, but she and the others have learned to let loose and joke around more. Stella offers a unique viewpoint due to her jaded experiences of the past, and she’s often the one who takes over with keeping everyone in line when Bloom has other things to take care of, proving to be a capable leader in her own right.

Dynamics:

Bloom: Bloom and Stella have grown to be close friends since they grew up as outcasts. They hide their feelings to keep up a strong face for others, but they’ve learned to relax and be happy around one another. Both consistently encourage one another to pursue their dreams, always the other’s biggest cheerleader. Bloom and Stella enjoy talking about relationships a lot, having similar tastes in both boys and girls, making relationships the subject of many a late night discussion.

Flora: Flora was able to see through Stella’s mask nearly right away, and she decided to do everything in her power to help Stella to embrace her true self as soon as possible. Flora encouraged Stella to take up tennis again after she distanced herself from the sport as a team, and the two enjoy taking up matches together. Stella often vents out her frustrations as the two play. Flora and Stella often share their insecurities together when times get tough, leading to a quiet, unspoken bond between the two.

Musa: Musa and Stella are much more similar than either one of them would care to admit. They both get defensive easily and hide their pain behind a mask of confidence. While they were both lonely as kids, Stella’s was against her will while Musa embraced the silence. They’re both slowly working on getting over their past issues, even if the development is quieter than one would expect. Musa and Stella often share beta versions of songs and designs to get unbiased input.

Tecna: Stella and Tecna enjoy sharing guilty pleasures often. Stella’s interests from her childhood have only increased since she joined the Winx Club, and Tecna is the perfect person for Stella to indulge in stereotypically ‘nerdy’ habits with. They watch some animated shows late into the night, both of them predicting what will happen (though Tecna is right more often than not). Stella often makes fun of the characters’ fashion senses, something that makes Tecna laugh nearly nonstop.

Aisha: Aisha and Stella are both princesses who got into traditionally masculine subjects when they were growing up, and lucky for them, they have the same hidden passion: sports. Aisha is the only one of the girls who can rival Stella’s competitive spirit when they play sports (tennis being their favorite, something they often drag Flora into). They dance quite a bit together as well and have gained a reputation as the best dancers at Alfea, often indulging in couples-based dances at parties just to show off.

Roxy: By the time Roxy meets Stella, the latter has developed greatly and moved past her issues with bullying and dysmorphia. When Roxy struggles under the cruelty of some teenagers on Earth, Stella is the first one to go to her aid, helping Roxy with everything she has. Stella and Roxy have gained a mutual respect for one another through this, and while nobody knows exactly what they talk about late into the night, the general consensus is that it’s vulgar and violent alike.

Diaspro: Stella’s relationship with Diaspro is interesting to say the least. Stella first met Diaspro when the engagement between her and Sky was announced, and while Stella was upset at first, she mellowed her anger to not hate to Diaspro since what happened wasn't her fault. The two wound up getting closer due to their common interests in fashion and their past issues with hiding their true selves. They gossip together often and have spilled much drama to one another, though nobody is quite sure what.

Sky: Stella met Sky when she was going to Alfea for the first time. She didn't talk to him much, but they kept in touch even after she left the school behind. She hung out with him and the rest of the boys often. Stella was angry with him for quite some time after hearing he was engaged to Diaspro, but she eventually relaxed her grudge, though it took some time. Stella is very protective of Bloom where Sky is concerned and gives him the ‘don't hurt her’ spiel often even if she knows he wouldn't hurt her on purpose.

Brandon: Stella and Brandon hit it off immediately, becoming friends quickly. His friendly nature helped her to become more trusting, and she opened up to him much faster than she usually does with new people. He helped her through her insecurities easily, and they have a quiet, mutual understanding of one another. Stella doesn't mind his lack of royal status, caring more about who he is as a person and the fact that he respects her as an individual and not a pawn for power.

Riven: Riven is Stella’s least favorite of the Specialists. She doesn't get along with him at all, finding him to be too rude for no reason. She can get equally as defensive, but she still makes it clear that she's trying to get better where he has made no such thing obvious. Even after Riven starts to get better and pull back on his jealousy and anger problems, Stella still doesn't talk to him much, not seeing a reason to. They don't argue as much as they once did when Stella first entered the picture, but their relationship could be better.

Timmy: Timmy and Stella didn't talk much when they first met. Timmy was shy and awkward, and Stella didn't know how to approach him. After some time, Stella started making moves to improve her relationship with him by reaching out. Timmy showed Stella the glory of animation her first semester at Alfea, and they had movie nights often. Timmy and Stella don't tell anybody about this at first since Stella is still sheepish about it, but they share many secret glances as reference jokes to their fun nights.

Helia: Helia and Stella have a surprisingly strong relationship. He saw her drawing out fashion sketches at one point, and the rest was history. He got her back into drawing, and they meet up from time to time to sketch. They also have the same interest in manga (a guilty pleasure of Stella’s) and exchange copies in between lengthy discussions about the stories. Stella also helps Helia to become closer to Flora, wanting the best for them both in her own little way.

Nabu: Stella and Nabu mostly get along because of Aisha. Stella’s over the top behavior can get to be a bit much at times, but she tones it down around Nabu so as not to frustrate Aisha. Stella is overall playful with Nabu, always trying to help him out with his relationship with Aisha. Whether they're friends or more, Nabu is happy with it, and Stella supports him fully, though this doesn't mean she'll tone down her joking. They sometimes have trolling competitions, just as a way of messing with each other with no malicious intent.

Radius: Radius and Stella were distant during her childhood. Since Radius had the responsibilities of a king combined with the issues of his marriage, there wasn't much time for Stella at first. When she showed signs of struggling with such, Radius did his best to become closer to her, and they've bonded as a result. Radius thinks of Stella as the light of his life, and he’d do anything for her. Especially after the divorce, they're closer than ever before.

Luna: Even with the divorce, Luna and Stella have remained close. Luna saw how much Stella was suffering and did as much as she could to make Stella’s life easier despite the divorce. Luna has been helping Stella through her past issues with dysmorphia by reassuring her as much as possible that she deserves better than what other people have told her before. Luna and Stella call each other each week and talk all about their lives, even if they don't see each other in person as often.

Amore: While Amore’s power is over love, her magic isn't exclusively based around romance. Amore became so attached to Stella since she could tell the fairy needed somebody to return the love she gave to do many, and Amore was happy to oblige. Amore and Stella love each other quite a bit, putting other pixie bonds to shame. They both tend to put forth a lot more than they get back, but they're always there to pick reach other back up when something goes wrong.

THE CAPPY CONNECTION

Ever since Super Mario Sunshine, Mario has been aided on his quests by a library of fairies, pixies and spirits who follow him through the adventure and lend their power to him. I believe that Cappy is the greatest of these characters, and here's why.

MAJOR MECHANIC

Since these types of characters only appear in 3D adventure games and RPGs, the first of its kind was FLUDD who served as the central play mechanic in Super Mario Sunshine. The whole thing was about spraying water on people and things so the water backpack was integral to the game. Then, in Super Mario Galaxy we were introduced to the Lumas and with it, Little Luma who accompanied Mario and bestowed upon him the spin attack ability, the core technique of both Galaxy games. You might easily overlook the Luma helper because he isn't really personified much and doesn't speak, but he does show up as part of a cooldown animation that indicates when the spin attack can be used again, so he is omnipresent. FLUDD however, is personified and will interject the action every now and then with tutorial dialogue and exposition. This type of chatty character went on to become a bit of a staple of Mario games... TALKING TUTOR RPGs are traditionally text heavy games and since Mario is generally a silent protagonist it's only natural to expect the characters around him to be the ones who flesh out the story and offer tips and advice. But the early RPGs didn't need this type of character since they were more traditional of the genre and it was the other party members in Super Mario RPG, Paper Mario 1 & 2 that offered this function, but they don't really qualify as this type of character. Eventually in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time we were introduced to Stuffwell who not only served as an adviser but also the brothers' inventory. A nifty little role, but not really necessary since other RPGs include an invisible inventory that doesn't require further explanation (indeed, the first Mario & Luigi game even had a non-sentient suitcase which served the same function.) By the third Mario & Luigi game we got Starlow who went on to be a regular in the series, appearing in the two following games and basically serving as a mouthpiece for the brothers, interacting with other characters on their behalf. Meanwhile, Super Paper Mario introduced us to Tippi whose ability to recall information on all sorts of enemies and environments was more of a holdover from the previous games where various Goomba characters offered the same service. She could also help out by finding hidden secrets but was perhaps most notable for having her own detailed backstory and a significant character arc throughout the game. Since she fulfilled her destiny and left at the end of that game, the next Paper Mario: Sticker Star brought with it a new face - Kersti whose name is a lot cleverer than her design. I stopped playing Paper Mario games at this point so I can't talk about her with authority but I understand she basically serves as the same info sprite while offering a couple of field abilities and some sort of significance in the final battle. The same can also be said of Huey in Paper Mario: Color Splash - at this point the exposition characters take on forms relevant to the game's theme. Then there's Beep-0 from Mario & Rabbids: Kingdom Battle. A different type of game entirely but relevant to this discussion since he tells you everything that's going on in the game and, as one of the very few characters who actually talks, attempts to carry the game's humour all by himself. Beep-0 is also special though, since he can actually be controlled. In fact, he is the only character you can control in this game. Technically Mario and friends all follow behind him and move to wherever he indicates during battle. But the concept of playable exposition elves is not completely unique... PLAYABLE PARTNER Looping back around to Super Mario Galaxy 2, the Co-Star Luma is introduced - a completely independent character who can be controlled by a second player. Well, not completely independent, it simply follows Mario around but will deviate from this path when Player 2's cursor is used to collect items and impede enemies. Technically this is no different from the second player cursor in the first Galaxy game but was given its own identity. CAPPY You've probably already deduced how Cappy fits into this by now: he embodies all of these features, and more! The cap throwing and capture mechanics are the entire backbone of Super Mario Odyssey and very versatile at that. Cappy himself will pop up now and then with hints on what to do next and exposition about how the plot is unfolding. He can also be controlled by a second player, and in a much more direct way than the previous examples. But there's more! Cappy is also special for having his own story and more specifically his own motivation. I think Tippi is on par for actually having a plot specific role (though if I'd have tried to cram another circle in here to reflect that it would have been ugly and frustrating) but Cappy is actually embarking on his own adventure at the same time as Mario!. His sister is kidnapped alongside Peach and he wants to rescue her too. This isn't just a creature from beyond who offers to accompany you for the greater good, you visit his home and hear his story and in this game Cappy seems to be treated as more than just a voice in your head, he's treated as a friend. There are two seats in the Odyssey and while Mario's silent nature makes it hard for him to really interact with Cappy, you do see the two chatting and relaxing between worlds. BIAS He's also an Englishman analogue with a hat theme, so that's why I love him. I think it would be hard for Cappy to show up again if a future game didn't include the cap mechanic, though spin-offs are fair game, but I do hope he sticks around and takes on a greater significance in the Mario series - I think he deserves it.

Finsterhund’s 2017 Summary of Art (and by extension, the rest of my life)

I’d be lying if I said that 2017 wasn’t an incredibly difficult year for the easily excitable finsterhund but it was also a very productive year for my art. I’m not going to deny that. A lot of issues came about that pushed me really hard, and I did break, but I mended too. I grew stronger in some ways. My writing took a nosedive and I’m not sure how to repair that, but my art, well... this is the first time I’ve ever done one of these. That should speak for itself.

In some months it was difficult to pick which one. I decided against choosing ones that may have been partially rotoscoped (such as my reaction images and most memes) and also because I tend to draw too similar to reference images I use. So no redraws of blurry HoD concept art or stuff.

This was supposed to be the picture for holidays 2016 but I’m a lazy earth boy who must’ve been slacking off because I finished and posted it right on January first! I remember at the time I was really proud of this one, and spent a lot of time on it. It was drawn traditionally and then scanned and digitized in GIMP... yes gimp. Fishy loved it and that made me happy. Nowadays I can pick apart so many flaws, especially in Andy. The lines look so shaky! Maybe I’ll redraw it for January 1st 2018! Assuming I don’t slack off again.

It was hard picking one from this month because I didn’t really like my drawings from then. Here’s art in paint of Red Spot eating a burger. I used to draw him with food when I was hungry for a while. Mmmmmm borger.

This is the month things started to take a nosedive. There was lots of good things happening, but some bad stuff too. A few new problems arose, but at the time the biggest was I found out my birth mom was being evicted and I would have to help her clear the old house. THAT old house. I retreated heavily into my artistic comforts and drew a lot of pictures of Red Spot being comforting and supportive to Andy. Red was created for that purpose after all, and Andy being a character I so closely identify with ended up being the comfort I needed especially then. Despite its crudeness in ms paint I do love this picture and should redraw it in Sai at some point.

The trials I had to face were unreal this month. The Wannabe War(tm) is well underway, and the time to return to the old house rapidly approached. I drew like there was no tomorrow, and these paint pictures were the best. Smoother lines, and more detail. When the time came to face that house things got ugly. Mom hid that my dog Jack had been dead for over half a year and broke the news only when I became distraught when I arrived and he didn’t come when I called him. My fixation on the “monkey’s paw” that was ruining everything I ever wished for started around here, and I kept breaking down. Bad regressing back to before I left that place happened. But something else did too. I DIDN’T. STOP. DRAWING. I drew more and more. Choosing to bring my laptop allowed me to make more pictures. A lot of Red Spot and Andy comfort ones, some mean little immature vent comics, and memes. Lots of memes. I was able to do the job I went there to do and returned home exhausted but VICTORIOUS. My art? Well I think I actually improved a lot then. It was predominantly due to surviving in spite of everything and the sheer volume of cruddy little paint drawings. I didn’t want to pick a mean comic and already had one ms paint Andy and Red picture in this line up so here’s a surprisingly detailed xenomorph queen being licked by a prequel era character who is a massive spoiler. Not only were both characters very complicated to draw, but I’m genuinely shocked I was able to draw an xenomorph at all.

After the painful embarrassment of April I tried really hard to relax. I was still really scared and anxious about the Wannabe incident, but it had more or less turned into a post-arms race stalemate where he wasn’t really doing anything and I just had my weapons of mass destruction pointed at him with my grubby little orange paw over the launch button which is where things have been ever since. My art took a relaxation break, but it was still steadily getting better. Late May I wanted to come up with a reason to actually celebrate my birthday (June 3rd) so I did a silly little “June is International Heart of Darkness month” post featuring Red and Andy sharing a slice of chocolate cake. I went on to say that June 3rd was “International draw heart of darkness fan art” day (real smooth you egocentric mutt) but I thought it’d be a good way to actually celebrate the day but make it about the video game that gave me a reason to live another year instead of about me aging, as I openly hate that I grow older.

A few of my friends drew HoD stuff this month, but a lot of my friends were busy due to jobs, school, life, etc. We used to be a lot more active in 2015 and even in 2016 so this did hit me pretty hard. As a result, I become very frustrated and out of spite decide it’s finally time to test my “new toy.” I don’t remember when Kale actually gave me his old tablet, but in June I finally install its drivers, get a copy of paint tool sai, and draw a lot with it. At first I hate these pictures and go back to paint whenever possible. There’s something wrong with my copy of sai and windows 10 doesn’t like the drivers. But I push myself, and I start to make more pictures of Andy, Whisky, Red Spot, etc. Not a lot of my early Sai pictures ever got posted or even made it past the inking stage, but one night I just couldn’t sleep so I drew Andy cradled in the crook of Red’s wing and got it to the flat colors stage.

I try to calm down. it’s a good month I think. Not much happens. It’s the month I finally give myself a new fursona. I decided that Red Spot isn’t “me” and I can’t use Andy in furry communities so I come up with a solution. It... it’s just Andy as a doberman. It’s a little orange doberman that wears a red bandanna and Andy’s hat... Doberman Andy. But he’s cute, and I can draw him, and so I do draw him. And he helps me get better at drawing in Sai.

The month of the solar eclipse! Me and my friend were going to go down to the US to see it together and... nope... that plan fell through. It makes me a brat, but that’s okay because I can just draw six hundred thousand drawings of Andy. That’ll help me feel better. I ended up having a sabbatical from my blog after some people on tumblr began to bother me and I put up a drawing of Andy’s shoe so nobody could go in. This is an MS Paint picture! Sadly, I’ve stopped really drawing in the program. I like how I did Andy’s face even if his hat and hair weren’t the best.

I return from my sabbatical and begin to spam my tumblr with Andy drawings I’m making in paint tool sai. The quality and style of Andy in these pictures varies drastically as I try a whole manner of new things. At one point I make a post that has five color pictures of Andy in it. It’s slowly becoming difficult to pick which picture I wanted to put here. Not because I didn’t like any, but because I liked too many. SMOL Andy was probably my favourite of the bunch. I made him more chibi and cute than I normally do. It was on accident but I thought he was too cute to go back and make him more on-model.

I was supposed to do an Andy version of Inktober but I guess the extreme amount of Andy pictures was a September thing because I burned out relatively quickly. I had some drama involving a prototype disc and also ended up having to pay way too much extra money every month until further notice but it’s a relatively calm month all things considering. The way I drew Andy in this art isn’t particularly stellar, but I love what I did with Red’s mouth and nose. I wanted to show that the way I draw Red improved too.

My chronic pain gets worse for no good reason, I get a very disturbing creeper threatening me online, and I’m generally depressed, but I’m drawing. That’s good. I start a new revolutionary technique when I rely almost entirely on the cinematics as reference and don’t reference other cartoon styles whenever I can when it comes to drawing Andy. I enjoy the result. Drawing him in a cute penguin-themed suit made my day. It was so hard to decide which one to pick this month. I loved so many of them.

Like November, but somewhat better I think. I’m still drawing Andy a lot, with Red coming along for the ride too. This one I tried to draw Andy in a more Disney-like style. I love how I did his face and freckles. The drawing of Whisky from the same post is great too. I look at a lot of my newer drawings and feel genuinely pleased with the result. I think I actually am improving, and whilst I think it is due a lot to getting sai and a tablet, it can also be because I’m becoming more skilled and getting more practice as well. Lets hope the new year brings us smooth sailing, lots of fun, and happy times our way. HoD will be 20 in 2018 and I’m ready to bring the subject of my love and joy a great two decade celebration.

There’s a talk of Divine Rays of Creation online so I’d like to address the Orange Ray because everybody’s talking of Blue Rays and apparently others are sitting quiet, like non-existing ;) I’ve a feeling that I’ve covered that topic before, but I can’t find it now, so here you go, as it’s important to ‘know thyself’.

The story goes that in the beginning of the Universe, there were 3 founder flames/lights - blue (cyan), golden (yellow) and magenta. They then mixed and created other colors - green, red and blue (indigo). Then these mixed with both the founders and others to creating even more colors.

On the electromagnetic spectrum scale, violet and indigo/blue light waves are the shortest, while orange and red is the longest. Thus one may say that the Blue Rays let go of old mental stuff and teachings easily as they trust the Universe’s guidance but the Oranges and the Reds not so well as they’re need a solid proof to believe. Blue Rays may be better in telepathy and learning things from the aura, or in spirit, but Oranges would like to have a human chat and maybe sex before judging :) Not that we are underdeveloped but we just need more proofs to figure out is one walks their talk as we like stability.

Orange Ray (in the color theory) is an amalgam, a creation of the Red and Yellow Rays (if Gold Ray is involved, then Orange gets a gold glow, or sparks).

Orange is a Ray crucial for the act of creation to happen at all. Orange Ray is the energy of orgasm, the roar, the pleasure, the major transmutation of many into One, the ejection and the injection of itself into the Universe. Orange is the very essence of the blast, explosion, the Big Bang without which tension couldn’t be transmuted into calm. It is love, intimacy, passion and wit too.

Therefore, it governs the 2nd of the 7, the sacral chakra in the human body (located below the belly button where the genital zone begins inside) which corresponds with anything pleasure (sex), joy, self-confidence and life-giving. Not just giving birth to children, but also bringing a (new) life to art, projects, ideas, moving things forward by motivation and encouragement, re-doing, re-storing things to give it a new shine and meaning.

When the Red Ray brings action, tension and a need to express itself, then Orange takes it further to 1) transmute many into One, 2) release, eject & express, 3) create a thrilling joy by purification. When all these steps happen, the energy can then settle down and one can analyze everything what happened to bask in post-creation happiness, satisfaction and harmony - here comes the Yellow Ray (of the Sun in the middle of the day), and the color of solar plexus chakra too.

The color of the Sun is traditionally assigned to the masculine energy but we all know females can be masculine too (here, here!), and humans have in fact 2 energies in one body, hence the inner conflict. As angelics, we are androgynous - we’re powered by the 3rd energy which is the mix of the masculine, feminine and the divine.

Now, people who identify themselves as the Orange Rays are: self-confident, usually well grounded, open, dynamic, multi-tasking, courageous, persistent, straight-forward, honest, positive, intelligent, intellectual, electric and magnetic at the same time, usually described as ‘hot’, ‘foxy’, ‘sexy’, generally attractive to the same and opposite sexes, which often has little to do with the physical look, but rather with the vibration of the body, the heart and mind. The Oranges love anything physical made with a use of the body, hands and legs, even hips ;). They enjoy the nature (gardening, camping, hiking, eating outdoor, visiting parks).

Of human activities however, they cherish sex the most, including outdoor sex because not only it brings their inner balance back but takes them ‘home’. Oranges are ‘natural born lovers’ who almost never need to learn anything sex-related - they just come and perform as they feel they should. They are turned on easily, and experience orgasms beyond human imagination. Oranges can have orgasms without the physical stimulation too and it its thanks to their fiery imagination. When they cum, they spiritually eject themselves out of the body, planet and galaxy and into the Universe, to their ‘home’ where they feel unlimited. They are craving for intense sex and orgasms as this is the only human activity letting them reach the highest state needed for the transmutation. The Oranges can have many sexual partners but these don’t make them feel closer to ‘god’. It’s because the Orange Rays are craving for that one and only to invest their precious, sacred powers into, the Perfect Lover who is also the boyfriend, the husband, the best friend, who stays put, is always available and enjoys passion as much as they do, etc etc. (Thus we got a Twin-Flame, to fire up as two!) It is best when said love making comes in a stable relationship, with trust and love but the Oranges can explode also during a one night stand, considering the lover is a trusted, direct and playful ‘professional’ who not only plays with the Oranges intellectually but understands their body language as well. Don’t forget about oils, candles, quiet music, massage and incense sticks. The spiritual self-ejection into the Universe lets the Orange Rays become that true sacred orange power without limiting requirements, addictions, templates, rules and regulations of the human world.

The Oranges scream loudly when they make love, but also sing aloud when they are home alone to release that constantly burning fire. If for whatever reason they cannot make love, they always ‘do’ something instead since ‘not doing’ makes them feel neurotic. They get frustrated when the Chi energy doesn’t have a creative outlet. They are very practical however and won’t make things which then they couldn’t utilize - thus they want to re-do, re-store, re-produce, then sell or at least share to hear some applause in return. They enjoy multiplying things creatively. If they buy anything or invest money in, they want to retrieve that money in any other form later on.

The Oranges are often artists, philosophers, tradesmen, business people, teachers, explorers, travelers, and/or sportsmen as they love motion (of a body or thought), yet moving on their own - exploring on foot, bike, to feel their own body strength and muscles’ effort. They love seeing things in motion too - car racing, ice skating, horse riding, a carrousel, a machine etc. but they prefer to participate in action. They have a natural ADHD symptoms which is in fact high body vibration. They are impatient but persistent which counter-weights the former and lets them achieve goals. If the goal however doesn’t materialize fast, they leave it for another time as they have no patience for waiting. The fire must burn! They bring the fire through practical, yet original ideas but they don’t have enough of patience to release them, so these must be continued by somebody who has a solid plan and more endurance. In fact, the Orange Rays could do well by selling ideas only.

The Orange Ray people are known for the self-talk which keeps them in touch with their Higher Self and confirms their best choices, but they also love talking directly to others, inducing plants, animals, insects and even items. The Oranges somewhat hate the sound of the telephone as they are afraid of anything sudden - usually unpleasant news which could disturb their inner balance, considering that it was a hard task to balance the fire. They love anything what tastes sweet (like sweet wine, dark chocolate, vanilla ice cream etc.) and very spicy too. The Oranges enjoys seeing beautiful sights - views from the mountain, dancing flames of a bonfire, sunsets, wastelands, deserts, space and freedom, hot sunshine, hot winds, hot air, hot water, and anything which makes their tense muscles in the back, thighs, sacral and root chakras (and the brain!) relax.

They love the feel during the sunset when the orange light covers everything - they then feel united with All That Is, safe and exclusively loved by the Sun at that very moment. They often paint their room orange to mimic and surround themselves with such a burning light and express own shine too. In astronomy, an orange star often means a dying star which may also bring memories of a star the Orange Rays might have lived near by and which might exploded in the distant past bringing an end to their existence. Orange light however carries deep, sacral love and thus the dying star also emanates it. A connection with the Sun, also with orange, giant stars like Betelgeuse, Antares, Arcturus, Aldebaran, and with orange rock and soil, volcanoes and lava, with Mars and/or Venus feels natural to these Orange human-angelics.

The Orange Rays cannot stand uncertainty, lack of knowledge and safety, instability, chaos, and poor life conditions. They dislike cold weather, cold winds, rain and cold water overall. Skin & joints are sensitive. Mentally, they cannot cope with enslavement, a lack of freedom of choice, sadness, sickness (own or anybody around), and they hate the low vibration overall. Very sensitive thus very reactive to sounds, colors, fragrances, forms, shapes, and said motion. The Oranges are naturally egocentric and run away from anything unpleasant as means to protect themselves from disturbance because they know it takes much of their inner power and time to make them re-balanced. They know themselves very well as they listen to their bodies, hearts and minds. If they run, it means they felt their inner harmony greatly endangered.

They are somewhat persistent to stay in the same environment for many years if they don’t find anything better as they don’t like changes, even-though they are natural energy transmuters. Transmutation through the Orange Ray is an ultimate, complete, a non-revertible experience, so the Orange knows he/she can burn out quickly if they overload their powers. That’s why adult Orange Rays are aware (through past experiences) to not engage foolishly into changing things for others, and giving them own power, if such individuals neither want a change, nor asked for help. The Oranges hate making mistakes. Every adult Orange Ray’s decision comes after lots of thinking, analysis and testing because they want to take only one action, to invest only once and well, then be at least 95% satisfied and feel secure. This is not natural, but self-taught after receiving a few bitter life lessons. The Oranges are as impulsive as Red Rays, with the difference that the Reds like keeping things for themselves, but the Oranges love sharing. Orange Rays don’t like taking a risk but are brave when they face an emergency situation, and then often lead other people telling them what to do, and fast! They turn into an adviser, motivator, protector and warrior.

If Orange Rays cannot express themselves, they get bipolar - angry and frustrated, blaming and hating everybody around for own pity, often becoming self-destructive. Then if anything finally lets them have fun, they may exaggerate or become addicted easily. Orange hates anything cold, but they’re somewhat attracted to places unavailable to them or to reserved people, as if they wanted to test themselves, to try to melt any resistance or ice away. Oranges are put off by rabble, rudeness, arrogance, stupidity, manipulation, cruelty, slavery and blindness.

The biggest advantage of being born as the Orange Ray is that you force yourself to move on after every failure because you hate that stuck energy within. You always find that one more hope, thinking that when you do things differently the next time, then you will finally achieve what you desired. You transmute everything from shallow into high, more advanced, and certainly happier. You bring fire, motivation, action into places and into people’s vibration even if you don’t interact with these. You bring hope. It’s enough that you are amongst the people or in places (which also emanate energy) and shine with your golden sparks, vibrant energy and the inner heat. You simply make depressed people stand up and move on; believe that things must be improved.

At some point, Oranges realize they came from the Sun (or Sun-like stars) and they can radiate such a physical heat too. It is important they become aware they are a sun within and they can heat themselves up anytime they want which warmth will keep them positive, away from fears and worrying.

The Orange folks serve as conductors to let raw energies from Gaia flow into the Universe, and vice versa. They do it through own bodies, by filtering, rejecting the bad and weak, letting only the best, most valuable and the strongest vibration pass through. That’s why they have to find a way, of even few ways to release, trash the transmutation process ‘leftovers’ to keep the ‘furnace’ clean. Leaving a soot in a chimney is dangerous, as it can catch fire easily! :)

Life mission of Orange Rays is to believe and trust in themselves and support own self-confidence. It’s because they are open which is great, but they may be prone to other people’s influence at times of weakness, when they run on low energy or were contacted by low vibration, or transmuted too much of raw energy. The Oranges can become very depressed as they sometime think like a victim, that if bad things happen to them it’s only about them, as if they were chosen to suffer while others have the right to be free and happy at the same time.

Angelic, unearthly beings related to he Orange Rays are Seraphim and Ophanim, Powers, elementals (ie. Fire Djinns), Dragons, Phoenix, and others who use the element of the Sun, electricity, lightning and fire as their core power (though humans with the essences of ie. Seraphim can also resonate with other colors as well).

When it comes to helpful minerals and gemstones, the Orange Rays will benefit from are those gems which rise and/or protect high vibration (antophyllit, black shiva lingam, vanadite, ruby, red and green garnets, red corral, septarians, pink and brecciated jaspers), anchor own energy (black torumaline, hematite, jasper kambaba), allow for the Universe’s & Gaia’s energy transmutation (black tektite, black onyx, sodalite), keep the mind active, balanced and confident (orange, fire and red calcites, and also calcite with rutile), keep the blood flowing well and digestion stable (agate carnelian, red jasper, hematite, bloodstone, danburite, orange opal, yellow jasper, unakite, tiger’s eye, citrine). Blue and green soothing stones like blue & green calcites, angelite, chrysocola, turquoise, aquamarine, including also white, pink and yellow opals, stilbite and celestine will let them sleep well :) Self-confidence and inner trust will be protected by tiger’s eye, mookait jasper, snowflake and Apache tears obsidians (the latter will siphon all worries and detach from unhappiness, clean them in water sometime). Sodalite will let the Orange Rays detach from the earthy plane to explore the outer zones through their higher heart and the mind’s eye. Red Garnet is perfect to keep the sexual stamina balanced and in place.

When it comes to fashion, the Orange Rays look the best when they underline their natural dynamics, thus sporty clothes may do. Orange also brings authority and leadership so both men and women look good in official suits, or even regimentals. Colors which may make the Orange feel more in tune with themselves are, obviously, orange, but also red, gold and golden, dark or pale green, dark blue, indigo, brown, and brick-like colors too. White will underline their inner independence. Black is the best contrast but only when composed with red or orange as too much of black subdues the Orange Ray’s inner fire and outer shine. The Oranges may avoid magenta and pink colors which damage their natural vibration, and light blue which makes them feel like conflicted, cold, caged and muted. Purple may or may not look good on the Oranges, depending on their physical body traits. It’s always all up to your own preference and feel.

Finally, do Orange Rays mix well with opposite colors? I don’t know. It may be that Twin Flames come from the 2 color ‘families’ - one major which lets them feel the same vibration within and which pulls them together (two Orange or Blue rays, or the ‘closest neighbors’ on the electromagnetic light scale - Orange and Red, Blue and Violet, Green and Yellow), and the other color is added as an opposite to make one twin trigger the other and teach something else ;) Ie. an Orange-Blue + Red-Indigo Rays couple, etc. I’m not en expert in these, but I know I’m Orange-Golden with some traits of Blue or Indigo and my twin is definitely one of the Indigo as not only he loves blue (I don’t) but he also creates art & music so this means he has the Orange or Red Ray’s influence.

Everyone Gets Sick Sometimes

@puccafangirl I wrote this little story for you inspired by your sick Tamatoa picture 😊I hope you like it! Chapter 1: "Come on, babe! Let's get going!" Tamatoa called, "That treasure won't collect itself!" He stood in the entrance to his cave, snapping his claws impatiently. Mollie, who's back was currently to him, looked up from her sketchbook when she heard the sound of his voice. Instead of being deep and mysterious and as utterly sexy as usual, it sounded a bit tired and raspy. She turned around, "Tama? Are you alr-" she stopped when she caught sight of him. Tamatoa looked tired and flushed, maybe even a bit dizzy. A look of surprise and concern came onto her face. "Look, babe, I know I'm dazzling, but you can gaze at me all you want later," he smiled in his usual cocky manner, but it looked like he was trying to hide physical discomfort behind it. Mollie wasn't buying that, "Are you sure you're feeling up to treasure hunting?" "O-of course!" Tamatoa stuttered defiantly, even though he felt awful. His head hurt, he felt hot and cold at the same time, his throats felt like it had a tiny monster scratching at the back of it, and all he wanted to do was sleep for the rest of the day. However, he loved treasure-hunting almost as much as he loved free food, and...okay, he didn't want to look weak in front of Mollie. She was the best thing to happen to him since finding that genie lamp. But would he admit any of this? No! The great Tamatoa was NOT going to have anyone thinking he'd gone soft! He shook his head as though trying to clear it, "I'm the picture of health, Mollie! Don't be ridiculous!" He stood up straight with his head held high. This didn't last for long, though. A wave of nausea and dizziness swept over him as his eyes widened briefly before displaying a look of exhaustion. Mollie folded her arms and looked at him with a loving "I-don't-think-so" sort of expression. She said nothing. She didn't have to. Seeing her sweet face looking at him so knowingly, Tamatoa melted inside and knew he couldn't fight it. He hung his head and walked over to the place in his cave where he slept. Flopping down dramatically with classic Tamatoa flair, he moaned, "Good gods, babe, I think I'm dying!" Mollie smiled and shook her head. He could be such a diva sometimes! She walked over to him and compassionately put her hand on his face, "You'll be alright, love. I'll take care of you," she kissed his cheek, "Now how can I help you feel better?" "Get me something shiny?" He asked weakly with a bit of a sheepish smile. Hey, it was worth a shot! "Tama, come on now..." "I don't knooowwwww..." he groaned, "I can't remember the last time I got sick. Probably because Tamatoa doesn't get sick!" He banged his claw on the ground, "Why's this happening to me?" Tamatoa looked over at Mollie, "Why's this happening to me, babe? What did I do to deserve this?" He squeezed his eyelids shut, trying to hold back tears. Mollie, her hand still on his face, rested her head on Tamatoa's cheek and started stroking his face with her other hand, "Shhh, it's okay. You're going to be fine," Mollie spoke softly and tenderly to her crustacean companion, "Why don't you take a little nap? I'm sure I can come up with something! You just relax. Your body needs it." Tamatoa whimpered and put his head down. He closed his eyes and breathed deeply. Mollie took this as her cue to leave. As she got up, Tamatoa lightly grabbed at her ankle, "Will you stay with me until I fall asleep?" He asked, almost in a whisper. Mollie smiled, "Of course," she sat down by the crab and watched him rest. Chapter 2: Normally, a human walking around Lalotai by themselves would not last even two minutes. However, nearly everyone in the realm of monsters knew who Mollie was and how special she was to Lalotai's most powerful resident, so the other monsters did her no harm. She could walk about the realm in peace. Her walk didn't feel very peaceful, though; her brain hard at work trying to come up with something for a sick crab. "Do I have ANY idea what to do? No!" Mollie muttered to herself as she wandered through the plants and rocks. She chuckled dryly, "I guess this is more evidence that school really doesn't prepare you for the real world!" THUMP! Something hit the ground loudly behind her. Mollie turned around, eyes filled with fear. Thankfully, that feeling went away as she identified the source of that noise. It was none other than Tamatoa's old friend, Maui, the shape-shifting demigod. Mollie sighed with relief, and smiled, "Hi Maui!" "Hey there, Mollie!" He grinned. Then, with a curious look, asked, "Why're you out here all by yourself? Where's old crab cakes at?" Mollie's face fell, "He's sick, and I have no idea what to do or what to get him or-ahhh!!!" Mollie nearly pulled her hair out in frustration. "Hey, no need to panic, kiddo!" Maui put a friendly hand on her shoulder, "You could probably find something to help the big guy at Kim & Kinoki's." Mollie raised an eyebrow, "Who now?" "Kim & Kinoki's. It's a shop for medicinal herbs and tinctures and such. I get my seaweed from there! Come on, I'll show you where it's at!" He motioned with his arm for Mollie to follow. Catching up with Maui, she eyed him suspiciously, "Seaweed?" Mollie was surprised to hear such a thing from the demigod. "Hey, being Maui, shapeshifter, demigod of the wind and sea, hero of man, gets stressful." He shrugged it off, then nervously added, "Don't tell Moana!" Mollie chuckled and shook her head as the two continued walking. About 10 minutes later, they were standing in front of a sunken ship with a massive hole in it, which appeared to be the doorway. Above said doorway was a sign that with the name Maui mentioned on it. "Well, here we are! Kim & Kinoki's!" Maui said, and Mollie followed him into the strange shop. Upon entering, Mollie was greeted with what can only be described as an assault to her olfactory sense. The herb and fish smell was overwhelming! Aside from that, though, the little shop was very interesting. Shelves lined with vials and jars of different colored spices, liquids, and powders. They even sold preserved monster body parts, such as tentacles, fangs, and what Mollie sincerely hoped were two eyeballs suspended in a jar of liquid. "We'll be right with you!" Called a female voice. It came from a little room behind the cash register, as Mollie noticed. The two continued casually browsing for about a minute or so when a two-headed water nymph came out of the little room. The creature was light blue and traditionally feminine with delicate-looking wings. One head had a short, dark blue a-line haircut and calm grey eyes, while the other head had tousled yellow hair, sharp teeth and eyes that were completely white. Mollie gasped upon seeing her. The two heads gasped as well. "What's a human doing in Lalotai?" The yellow-haired one asked loudly to no one in particular. Her blue haired sister gave her a stern look, "Don't be rude, Kinoki! She's probably terrified enough as it is!" She turned to Mollie and Maui smiling, "Forgive her. She doesn't always think before she speaks. Anyway, welcome to Kim & Kinoki's! I'm Kim, and this idiot," she poked the yellow haired head, who growled and snapped at her finger, "is Kinoki. Can we help you find anything? And nice to see you, Maui. You want your usual?" "Not today, thanks. I'm just helping Miss Mollie here find some medicine for her sick crab boyfriend. Got anything that might help the big guy?" Both Kim and Kinoki's eyes widened. "Ohhhh my gods it all makes sense now," Kinoki's said, staring at Mollie in awe. Mollie blushed, "What do you mean?" She asked shyly. "You're Tamatoa's human girl?" Kim asked, still in awe. Mollie's blushed deepened at the mention of her sweetheart's name. She nodded shyly. "HolyshrimpIamsosorryforbeinganasspleasedontbeangrypleasedont-" Kim clamped her hand over Kinoki's mouth and stopped her fearful rambling, "I'm sorry if we've made you uncomfortable Mollie." Kim said, blushing a bit. She took her hand off of her sister's mouth, "Anyway, what's ailing Tamatoa?" "Well," Mollie stammered, "It kinda seems like he has the flu, but I don't know if crabs can get the flu, because that's a human virus, and," Mollie got flustered, "I just, I hate seeing him like this and not knowing what to do and-" Mollie was cut off as the sisters approached. Kim put her hand on Mollie's cheek in a motherly sort of way, "Darling, I know exactly what he needs. Wait here," The sisters disappeared into their little room. After several minutes of shuffling, sizzling, and popping sounds, the pair came back out, "All done!" Kinoki grinned, showing her pointy teeth. Kim held a large jar of thick gold liquid, "This mixture of gold and Venus Death Trap leaves should have him feeling much better! Though I need to warn you," she said as she set the jar on the counter, "Most crabs have trouble taking it. The idea of ingesting gold is often troubling for their kind." "Yeah, like remember that one red crab that owns the burger joint a few hours from here?" Kinoki asked Kim, "He just about had an aneurysm at the thought of that!" Kim smiled and shook her head at that memory, "Poor guy...anyway, I hope this helps!" She handed Mollie the jar, "And don't hesitate to return for any other needs you might have!" "Wait, don't I owe you some money?" Mollie asked. "This one's on us," Kim smiled warmly. "Mostly because we have a healthy fear of Tamatoa!" Kinoki grinned awkwardly. Mollie laughed, "Well, thank you! This means a lot!" "No problem!" Kim said, "You guy's have a great day!" Chapter 3 "Alright, so how're we gonna do this?" Maui asked on the way back to Tamatoa's cave. Mollie blinked in surprise. She looked up at Maui, "We?" "Trust me, Mollie," Maui chuckled, "This is gonna be a job that requires a demigod! Tamatoa is pretty stubborn!" Mollie laughed, "You don't have to tell me twice about that!" The two of them were deep in thought for the next few minutes of their walk, trying to come up with a way to get Tamatoa to take his medicine. "You know," Maui said finally, " We could always try to put it in some sort of capsule or funnel and when he's not looking, shove it up his-" "MAUI!" Mollie shouted at him, blushing furiously, "TOO FAR!" Maui put his hands up, "Okay, okay, we won't do that! But honestly, do you have a better idea?" "Bat our eyelashes and hope for the best?" "Come on, Mollie." "Alright, alright," she sighed, "What else can we do?" Maui's face lit up, "What if we used berry juice to dye it purple?" Mollie smiled, "Sounds like a good plan! Now, where can we find some berries?" Soon enough, the two arrived at Tamatoa's lair with their newly-colored medication. "This is definitely going to work," Maui said with determination, "Now let's go fix that crab!" Tamatoa was still sleeping when Mollie and Maui entered. Mollie gave the jar to Maui, "Let me wake him up." She knelt down in front of Tamatoa's face and began rubbing his cheek, "Tama, wake up," she said softly, "I'm back with some medicine." Tamatoa let out a whimpering moan and opened his eyes, "Alright then, babe," he said weakly, "Let's have it," he pushed himself up a bit. Maui walked over now, holding the jar of purple liquid, "Here you go, buddy! Drink up!" Tamatoa looked over at Maui with surprise, "What are you doing here? And what is that mess?" "It's your medicine, silly!" Mollie kissed Tamatoa's cheek. "I know that much already," Tamatoa rolled his eyes, "But what's in it? It looks-" he paused, eyeballing the viscous liquid. Then his eyes widened, "I'm not drinking that! There's gold in it! That would be just...just blasphemous!" Maui stared at Tamatoa in awe and frustration, "How the hell did you figure that out?" "If there's anything I know about, you little semi-Demi-mini-god, it's gold." Maui cursed under his breath. "Language, babe," Tamatoa said cheekily. Maui gave him the finger. Maui turned around, "You're welcome," he said with a wink. Then he was off. Tamatoa sighed and closed his eyes. "Getting sleepy again?" Mollie asked. He nodded. "Want me to stay here with you?" Tamatoa opened one eye, "Could you?" He asked hopefully. Then he blushed, "And would you, erm, would you lie on my neck? It...feels nice when you...do that..." Mollie giggled, "Of course!" Tamatoa smiled weakly and picked her up, gently placing her on the back of his neck. Mollie curled up and closed her eyes. Soon, the two were sound asleep.

The Chalice

It was a great thing Mari was the first in line for succession. She would, one day, be a competent, pragmatic ruler. The people liked her. She wouldn’t go looking for trouble with other realms nor would she allow Hasetsu to fall from it’s glory. Yes, she’d be great at it.

Also, this way, Yuuri could live a calm, peaceful life as the second son and prince of the crown without the overwhelming pressure of having to be the one responsible for everybody else’s well being.

Not that he didn’t care about their people’s well being, it was just that there were other things he could do to serve his kingdom, things he was more competent at.

Yuuri had travelled as far as ships could take him as an emissary, getting to know many foreign places and people, establishing both political alliances and commercial agreements, befriending a number of other princes and princesses and emissaries around the globe. His family valued his work and he was content.

Rarely did he manage to spend enough time home with his family, a fact he regretted sometimes. Just that night, though, he would prefer to stay put in his chambers than attending the feast with his parents.

Every year, a grand feast was held, open for every resident and visitor of Hasetsu, to celebrate the Old Alliance, the agreement that had, many centuries before, ended the war between Hasetsu and the Old Realms, and started the Long Peace. Few of those realms existed nowadays, but the tradition remained, and people still came from many places to attend. On that day, noblemen and peasants shared the same food, sat at the same tables and danced to the same music.

The only problem was that the last time Yuuri had been among such a huge amount of people, he had been utterly humiliated.

After many months of negotiation, he had travelled to great kingdom of Sochi to seal a deal that would have been highly profitable for both parts; Sochi possessed an extensive territory vastly covered by forests. Hasetsu was small and needed the wood to build more ships. They had been willing to pay highly for it, and also benefit Soch in any future commercial dealings, and things had been working out great until Yuuri ruined it.

He had not been used to the strong, clear liquor served in the banquet that had been organized in his honor. Intoxicated with it, Yuuri had made a fool of himself, spoken without thinking, managed to offend the queen and pour his wine on the princess dress. The entire hall had laughed and mocked him, and he had sailed the very next day, deal now off the table. Ever since, he had avoided big crowds, always fearful someone around him would have been at the banquet, or heard of it.

Mari was having none of his excuses.

“Mother and Father will be disappointed if you’re not there, Yuuri. And the people want to see you. You have hidden yourself in this castle long enough.”

“I don’t think anybody wants to see me after what happened last year,” Yuuri said, staring at the sunset.

“Of course they do,” his sister said, firmly, “no one is holding that against you.” She came to stand by him on the balcony. “Besides, the feast will be particularly good this year. We have many performers visiting, those singers and dancers you love.”

“I’ve seen plenty of dancers when I was away,” Yuuri mumbled, though a part of him couldn’t help wondering if these dancer were any good.

“And if I remember correctly, you never minded seeing the same song being presented even a dozen of times.”

He said nothing, and so she sighed and ruffled his hair, before saying in a tone that was half frustration, half concern:

“Let it go, Yuuri. Everyone else has.”

Darkness fell around him as he reflected. He didn’t want to disappoint everyone further. Certainly, there would be people in the feast who had witnessed the disaster of Sochi. He’d have to face them eventually. It was time.

Taking a long, deep breath, he directed himself to the baths.

Arming tables filled the the view for as far as Yuuri’s eyes could reach. Traditionally, the feast was held in the port, a reminder of the first time a king of Hasetsu had shared food with a foreign captain, right there on the pier, thus sealing the first agreement of piece. The feast spread out from the port and took up most of the bay, including nearby squares and the largest streets. Everyone used their most elegant clothes and colorful accessories.

Yuuri was no exception. He wore dark charcoal velvet decorated with opals and pearls, and his sister looked beautiful in her carmine attire. Their parents shone in matching silver, like beacons among the people.

After the customary speech welcoming all to the annual Feast of Friendship was made, Yuuri felt much more relaxed. Mari had been right, it was time to move on. So far every single person that had passed him by had been respectful and friendly. If anybody was thinking of his failure, they had kept it to themselves. One of his oldest friends, Minako, sat by his side and talked to him throughout dinner, distracting him and reminding him that, although he loved the life of a traveller, home was still his favorite place to be.

A couple of hours had passed when he appeared. The performers Mari had mentioned in the afternoon made a colorful, flamboyant group. They were travelling artists, traipsing from place to place with no fixed home, used to perform for both kings and farmers, seeking audience wherever they could.

There were musicians and dancers, and as they positioned themselves right in front of Yuuri’s table, he saw in the middle of them a man who moved as softly and as fluidly as a column of smoke swirling in the wind. As the players told a story with their fingers, so did he illustrated it with his whole body. His eyes were closed as he danced, and his hair was as fair as molten silver falling down to his waist, a beautiful contrast to his silky purple attire, which flowed with every move of his body. When he opened his eyes, they were of the most striking blue Yuuri had ever seen. The man stared straight at Yuuri. Without breaking eye contact, he smirked and blew him a kiss.

Yuuri’s stomach sank.

This man. Yuuri had met him before. At the banquet, at the banquet in Sochi, he had seen him dancing. All of his memories from that night were covered with fog, but there was no mistaking the sway of his hips or the blue of his eyes.

Yuuri looked around, but he was alone. His parents had long gone to talk and mingle with the guests of the feast, and Minako was nowhere to be found. Mari still sat a couple of chairs away, but Yuuri couldn’t call her attention without interrupting her conversation and calling everyone’s attention as well.

He felt hot in his fancy robes, glued to his chair by this stranger’s mesmerizing eyes. Whenever he turned around or moved away, it was only to look right back at Yuuri a few moments later. It was hypnotizing. It was terrifying.

Who was he, why was he here? Had he come all the way to Hasetsu just to remind Yuuri of the banquete, to mock him?

Or to tempt him?

Regardless of what his intentions were, Yuuri couldn’t look away. The way his body spinned, the way his arms were lifted, complementing every move, it was like nothing Yuuri had ever seen before. He almost wanted to get up and joined him, become a part of his dance, a part of his being.

Afterwards, Yuuri couldn’t have told how long did the fair haired man danced for him. He would have placed his guess at at least a few eternities, but when the music ended, the feast was still taking place, people were still eating and drinking and talking merrily as if the most formidable expression of beauty hadn’t just happened right in front of their eyes. The world felt somewhat less now that it was over.

Yuuri felt a short sense of relief followed by an unexplainable pang of pain when the stranger made an exaggerated bow and swiftly walked away with the rest of his group. Yuuri was still too numb to applaud when he was swallowed by the crowd.

Other dancers came, and Minako returned, but Yuuri found he couldn’t concentrate anymore. His heart pounded in his chest, and he excused himself to go for a walk.

Many people greeted him, and in his distraction, he couldn’t even find it in himself to be anxious. He talked to residents and visitors, friends and people he barely knew, and Mari smiled encouraging to him when they crossed ways, but of the mysterious dancer that had him enchanted, there was no sign.

In the end, he walked to the very end of the area prepared for the feast, where the tables were mostly empty, it’s occupants having gone home or moved closer to the performers. An old couple lingered around, holding hands and conversing in low tones. Yuuri greeted them, but stood aside, staring at the horizon, lost in his own thoughts.

A soft touch to his elbow startled him back into reality. Before he looked up, he knew it would be him. He could feel it like a fragrance in the air, like a tingle in his skin. He looked up to the man’s eyes, even clearer in the moonlight, and said nothing. All tension he had felt before that moment seemed to flee his body, leaving something strange, akin to longing, in it’s stead. The man in front of him had a much more solemn expression than when he had been dancing.

“I was beginning to fear you had disappeared once again,” he said to Yuuri in a deep voice, soft as velvet.

“I am right here.”

“You are.” The intensity with which he was being staring at should have been unsettling. Yuuri looked down to the chalice the man held close to his chest. The man raised it, uncertainty flashing in his eyes.

“I was told that on this night, even a king shares his drink with a pirate.”

His words hung between them. Yuuri considered saying he was no king. Would never be a king. He considered saying that the other man was no pirate either. But he just closed his fingers around the other’s and brought the chalice to his lips, taking a long sip. Then he relaxed his grip, but didn’t let go as the man took it to his own lips, eyes locked with Yuuri’s. The breeze danced in his hair, and Yuuri could feel it brushing the back of his hand.

“Who are you?” Yuuri asked in a whisper, wondering if the other man could feel the warmth of his breath against his skin.

“My name is Viktor. I have come to find you.”

“Viktor.” Yuuri let the name roll in his tongue, tasting it. “Why?”

He shuddered before answering.

“I saw you in Sochi. I would be content if you allowed me to stay here, and to entertain you, and to look at you.”

Never had Yuuri seen anything as beautiful as the tremble of Viktor’s lips as they delivered their words. Yuuri’s fingers searched for those that weren’t still holding the empty glass, and planted a soft kiss to the knuckles, listening as Viktor’s breathing hitched.

“Is that all that you desire?” he asked, the steadiness of his voice surprising himself. Viktor’s hand was hot in Yuuri’s. He didn’t want to let go of it.

“It is… all that a wanderer with nothing to his name would dare to ask.”

They were silent for a few minutes. Yuuri didn’t know whether the old couple was still around. All he could hear was the distant sound of the feast, the coming and going of the waves and the thud of his heart.

“Perhaps a prince might dare to offer more.”

Viktor looked at him with wide eyes.

“But… your kingdom,” he stuttered, “Your family… How…?”

“Shhhh.” Yuuri pulled Viktor closer by the hand and was surprised when the man fully embraced him, but he found he didn’t mind. “Don’t worry about that. It’s not a problem.”

“I have waited for so long,” Viktor’s words were quiet under Yuuri’s ear, sounding like a confession. “I’ve never imagined this could be possible… I should have come sooner.”

Yuuri moved his hands to encircle the other’s waist tentatively.

“You’re here now.”

Viktor’s voice was like a prayer as he said, fervently:

“I am.”

How I would’ve done the Winn and Brainy arc in the back half of season 3:

3x10: First, have Kara visibly display her fear of Brainy, only for him to make sure she knows that he’s there in peace, only meaning to help her. Then, we’d see Winn and J’onn and Alex still be nervous around Brainy, but willing to work with him due to their circumstances. Not much would change with Kara and Brainy’s interactions or how Brainy ultimately gets through to Kara using Alex’s words, or that ending scene with Kara and Brainy, because it’s perfect, but we definitely also get a little thing with Winn and Brainy where Winn tells him like “hey, you’re not so bad after all”.

Brainy’s just casually “thank you, that was my intention” and they exchange awkward smiles, letting us know that this is only the beginning of their friendship. Alex letting Brainy sign her cast is also staying, because it’s beautiful, and maybe we get a scene where J’onn acknowledges that he couldn’t read Brainy’s mind but he still trusts him because Mon-El and Imra do? And Alex and Winn would probably agree. Also, goddammit, put the Legion rings from seasons 1 and 2 in the previously on, thanks.

3x11: Hoo boy. I’d say the setup is the same, but mayhaps in addition to the getting information on Reign thing, we have it so that the girl squad had to fight through a failsafe that Indigo installed on Fort Rozz? And that’s why the fort is falling into the star? So Brainy and Winn are mutually freaked out by this, with Winn kind of blaming Brainy for it since Indigo is his relative. They absolutely fight throughout the episode, for the same reason, with both of them feeling a strong responsibility to help their friends, and if they can’t, they’re failures. But they do come together at the end, with Winn being like “you know, I could hack you” casually, and Brainy staring at him and just being like “oh, I don’t think you would ever hack me” because at this point, we’d think it’s because Brainy is Mon-El’s best friend and Mon-El would hurt Winn if he did anything to him. This episode would definitely shake up their dynamic, making them outright antagonistic and of course Brainy’s attitude at the beginning wouldn’t change. But we definitely see both of these two coming to respect one another through how they handle the fight against Brainy’s relative. Who is in the previously on, obviously.

3x12: Someone asks where Brainy is, Winn tells them that he gave him a list of movies to work on, and/or Brainy and Imra are mentioned to be away at the alien bar/on a mission/relaxing because it’s what they deserve. Winn definitely asks Mon-El to tell him more about the Computo thing.

3x13: Why wasn’t Brainy helping to fix the ship? I don’t understand. Was it just to give Mon-El an opportunity to talk to J’onn? And for the marriage/love triangle drama to escalate? Anyway, he may be fixing the ship, or he’s looking for more Worldkillers, something. Maybe he’s still watching movies, or doesn’t want to deal with the humans. Winn definitely talks about him to someone, mentions how frustrating he is in relation to their interactions in 3x11.

3x14: Seriously, why wasn’t Brainy or Imra in this episode? Lack of actor availability? Too many characters already in the episode? I’m tired. Anyway, I don’t think Winn and Brainy’s dynamic is to the point that Winn can confide in Brainy in this episode? But I feel like Brainy definitely seeks out Winn at some point while they’re in the DEO together, and tells him that he has a parent who abandoned him too. It’s a small moment, and Winn’s not entirely sure about it, so his response to “if you want to talk, I’m here.” Is probably something along the lines of “I’ll think about that/let you know”, but we’d probably see Brainy looking into Winn’s history or asking to do so, and Winn adjusting to the idea of slowly opening up to Brainy. Maybe he jokes about karaoke, but Brainy tells him he only plays the Lumna organ, he doesn’t sing?

3x15: ooh, definitely have Brainy back in the DEO for a scene so we can have him and Winn in a shouting match. He can be off on a mission the rest of the time, but them being antagonistic under Myr’nn’s control would be excellent. Have them hitting each other where it hurts! Winn calls Brainy a glorified Windows Vista, Brainy comes up with an equally devastating insult to use against him in return! Entertaining and fantastic. Love it.

3x16: gosh. I definitely love the first scene with the image inducer being revealed and Winn recognizing it, keep that for sure. And I’d say also keep the line that’s similar to Indigo’s. And probably the Freddy Kreuger scene is good, I enjoy it, but I’d appreciate if maybe Brainy wasn’t the butt of the joke in that bit? Like maybe have Brainy know what it is but play along with Winn anyway, or he keeps guessing but Winn won’t say (as Winn looks at him proudly like “aw, he’s come so far”) - or he can’t, he keeps coughing and Brainy looks on, concerned.

Maybe he talks to Mon-El or Imra later and implies Winn is supposed to die? But they have to save him because everyone cares about him, and if killing Pestilence is the sacrifice that it takes to do that, then that’s a worthy sacrifice. Maybe, in a parallel to the 3x10 scene with Alex, we see Brainy listening in on the Winn and James conversation, understanding what Winn really means to everyone around him. And definitely keep the spinning chairs thing at the end, that was super cute.

3x17: oh man! More of Winn and Brainy (and Lena) on the Legion ship! At least 1 conversation, that’s all I ask for. But Brainy definitely shows casual concern for Winn after he comes back from reconnaissance with James, and either Winn or Brainy is just like “I’m glad you’re/I’m not dead”. And that moment with the ring is very cute and good, def. keep that for sure. Although maybe Brainy doesn’t say that it hurt. But keeping the shoulder-pat.

3x18: gosh, we definitely have a callback to the Indigo thing, with Brainy still saying that he underestimated Winn and backhandedly apologizing for it, and Winn comparing Brainy to the last Brainiac he went up against and saying at least he didn’t try to strangle Winn twice. But Brainy absolutely gives Winn the dirt, and mentions he’s glad that both of them are unlike their respective ancestors, before their not-as-awkward-but-still-kinda-awkward embrace.

Which may include a forehead kiss? Because at this point, it would be earned. Forehead kiss, in a “good luck”/ “this is how far we’ve progressed” kind of way, then a bro-hug, showing both of their methods of affection. And Winn absolutely still wears purple, because of course he would, which Brainy points out as being his favorite color. While Brainy also tells Mon-El later that he’s become fond of Winn and Kara and the others in the DEO. Because he is! It’s great! But the bug in the dirt is also present, because of course he’d come up with a way to make sure they were safe by listening in on them somehow.

3x23: Winn’s forcefield belt thing is not the reason why Winn goes to the future! It could be a part of it sure, with him developing a prototype, but that technology is definitely acknowledged as being Brainy’s, as it traditionally is in the comics. In the original timeline, he doesn’t know who came up with that, but once he goes back to the future he sees that it’s Winn’s because he survived Pestilence, when without the Legion’s help he wouldn’t have.

But it’s Brainy’s first and foremost. So, with that, Brainy is most interested in Winn and wants his help in the future because of his work on that malware he made from season 1 to fight Indigo. Even though that wasn’t finished either, it still shows his potential, and Brainy definitely thinks it would be useful in the fight against Brainiac if it was given the advantage of thirty-first century technology. And Winn and James’s conversation in this episode might be about Winn accidentally letting a guy get killed because of his tech, but it might also be about Winn being scared to face another Brainiac after Indigo did almost kill him.

But his friends reassure him, and Brainy encourages him, and we get the same ending as we did in canon, with the group hug at the end and the sweet, sweet sounds of Charlie Puth’s “Through it All” playing in the background. Also Winn acknowledges his mom, and that he told her where he was going. And him and Brainy hug goodbye again? Although I also have so much love for that original design he leaves Brainy, in the envelope with “Brainiac” on the outside and “Guaranteed to enjoy more than even dirt” on the Post-It note on the inside. So maybe it’s just that, but I’d hope they get a goodbye too.

Wrapped Tokens, Crypto-Derivatives and Candidate Ethereum Standards (ERCs).

Architecting an open permissionless financial system has been one of Ethereum's main ambitions, which is why it came about as implementing the blockchain paradigm (of a "a transactional singleton machine with shared-state") in a generalized fashion, capable of accommodating a wider range of applications on a single platform (compared to the somewhat strangely primitive, steampunk character of Bitcoin). For that purpose the Ethereum blockchain is coupled with a simple stack-based virtual machine (the EVM, Ethereum's general-purpose replicated "world computer") as the network's runtime environment for executing code residing on the shared ledger (carried out as blockchain transactions that use the ledger to globally synchronize the current state of the system across the network).

These persistent scripts, so-called "smart contracts", are triggered to execute when a transaction calls their account address. They can be thought of as stateful objects or automata that contain some custom logic exposed through API functions within the distributed peer-to-peer network and its address space, that way capable of serving the role of anything from a virtual safety deposit box, a pawnshop or an exchange, to a vending machine, a certificate registry or a notary of some sort, to a formalized pyramid scheme, a game or a money sucking trap of some sort or another. So, within the Ethereum ontology, one deals with designated objects identified through their public key or address - be those wallets or contracts.

The EVM is a stack-based machine. A stack is an abstract data type of a collection of elements that has two basic operations - push (adding an element to the collection) and pop (removing the most recently added one). This "last in, first out" (LIFO) order gives its name (a stack, or items stacked on top of each other). The above represents a simple stack's runtime (such with only push and pop operations). The EVM has a much longer list of opcodes.

These components together give the necessary base conditions for articulating more complex value statements in an open permissionless peer-to-peer network, allowing for building protocol overlays, composing specific dApps and refining interfaces that target particular audiences and interest groups as going further across the different levels of abstraction - from low-level bytecode to back-end contract logic and web application front-ends. Trying to extend Bitcoin with protocol overlays in efforts to accommodate the representing of other kinds of assets proved insufficient or inadequate based on that foundation. (A protocol overlay is similar to how HTTP, for instance, runs on top of the TCP/IP stack in the application layer of the Internet protocol suite, i.e. is an overlay on top of it.) Well-known efforts to formalize useful Bitcoin overlays and associate real-world assets with Bitcoin addresses were mastercoins and colored coins, the limitations of and frustration with which had also been one of the motivations driving the creation of Ethereum.

Account-keeping on the Bitcoin blockchain. Addresses in Bitcoin are neither wallets, nor accounts and do not carry balances. Instead, they are only used for receiving payments (there is no concept of a 'from' address) and a new address is usually generated for every new transaction. Ethereum took the basic premise of Bitcoin at the time, advancing the general concept a step further, beyond primitive UTXO coin payments (the state of the Ethereum blockchain is defined by record-keeping of accounts and their balances, rather than keeping track of unspent transaction outputs) and into something that could possibly lay the foundations for supporting an entire financial system, capable of expressing more sophisticated financial products and instruments, financial and crypto derivatives and catalyzing experimental crypto-economies (which had until then been either practically impossible or difficult and prohibitively expensive to implement within the constraints of the more conservative Bitcoin protocol). Inevitably, this also comes with its own set of problems along its path of trial-and-error (most notably, the catastrophic DAO hack which cooled everybody's enthusiasm for a long while), but a commitment to non-stagnation and continuous experimentation/innovation has also been a defining trait of Ethereum's ethos and community.

The Ethereum block architecture. Things get significantly more complex. To mention just a few, uncles are blocks which were very close to being "correct" and appended to the chain, so miners who mined uncle blocks are also rewarded for their investment, participation, and efforts to secure the network regardless. The Gas Limit field defines the maximum amount of gas that all combined transactions in the whole block are allowed to consume (similar to the maximum block size limit in Bitcoin which is measured in bytes). As Ethereum matures to develops into a decentralized, open financial system, parallel to the traditionally existing structures, advanced mechanisms and means for abstracting various kinds of assets and reliably capturing value from 'outside' (e.g., tokenizing commodities and precious metals, pegging to fiat currencies and currency baskets, etc.) become necessary, with various formulas and protocols proposed and discussed, some of which eventually getting implemented and gradually adopted across platforms and applications within the growing ecosystem.

Cross-chain interoperability and exchangeability of diverse crypto-assets across different systems and bridging between platforms is among the list of priorities in the present state of crypto-economic affairs and doing that via stablecoin mechanisms is one tendency right now which, combined with open standards and common protocols (such as the 0x protocol for decentralized off-chain exchange) together bring a set of primitives and engineering tools, easily integrated with all kinds of applications in more sophisticated structures which gradually contribute to organic growth and increased liquidity, accelerating network effects (though, as they say, Rome wasn't built in a day).

An interface contract declaring the required functions and events meeting the ERC-20 standard. The approve, allowance and transferFrom APIs expose the levers for operating on a token contract, allowing the transfer of an amount of tokens from one token holder's account balance to another.

Established technical standards and commonly recognized conventions and routines are also essential to codifying universally agreed upon formats and procedures, and some such as the ERC-20 specification of a token contract have been tremendously successful (at the cost of triggering a wave of scam-in-a-box ICOs throughout 2017-2019, as nobody would deny), while others, such as the ERC-721 standard for non-fungible tokens and collectibles might have been a bit premature, considering the subsequent clogging of network capacity as a result of the somewhat bizarre Cryptokitties mania. (All of which highlight the necessarily experimental nature of the project - in both the technical and societal sense of an experiment.)

Pushing the absurdity to the extreme just because. "MindBreed is a special type of Brainfuck interpreter that doesn't understand text input - only the fur patterns on CryptoKitties. Instead of simply typing out instructions, you must sacrifice an innocent kitty to the EVM for each added instruction." The Github repository with the Solidity contracts here.

Another up-and-coming mechanism for representing asset-backed tokens was introduced with so-called "wrapped" tokens. Which basically means converting an asset to an ERC-20 compatible token (and thereby, integrating it within Ethereum's crypto-economy), usually carried out in two ways:

Algorithmic, partially or entirely controlled by smart contracts and autonomous feedback mechanisms (e.g., locking an amount of collateral and issuing an equivalent amount of some other token or asset or automatically diluting the supply of some DAO governance tokens to re-calibrate a stablecoin's peg when market value falls below a certain critical threshold, as the case with MakerDAO, etc.), or

Semi-centralized/Federated by a consortium DAO of involved institutions and relevant bodies, trustworthy agencies and reputable parties which vote on decisions, proposals and system parameters and, importantly, operate transparently with verifiable proofs of reserves, registered and observable on the blockchain.

Obviously, this isn't a completely trustless arrangement where automation and algorithmic enforcement perfectly substitute for trusted third parties, system operators and an administrating bureaucracy (if it were that, it would quickly slide into inertia). What it tries to develop and institute instead is a regime of operating and an environment naturally conductive of healthy, beneficial market and governance behaviors via game theoretic alignments pulling the right actors and expertise where they naturally belong. While at the same time weeding out and discouraging other undesirable behaviors and ensuring there are no glaring, immediate technical or other loopholes to exploit so that one could relax assumptions under some clearly defined circumstances.

WETH: Wrapped Ether

Wrapped Ether or WETH is an ERC-20 compliant Ether. Since Ether (ETH), Ethereum's native proto-currency, does not itself conform to the ERC-20 standard specification (that defines how Ethereum tokens, or Ethereum-derived meta-currencies, are to be transferred and exchanged between one another while keeping a consistent record of the interactions within the Ethereum network), wrapping Ether as an ERC-20 eliminates the handling logic specific to ETH, allowing for directly trading it with other tokens on decentralized platforms within the ecosystem (such as Radar Relay). Technically, it's a stablecoin pegged to the price of Ether and implementing the standard token interface for the purpose of building more efficient and performant dApps, introducing standardization across them and establishing safer contract coding conventions.

"Wrapping" ETH really means exchanging it for an equivalent amount of WETH via a smart contract, while "unwrapping" it back to plain ETH means exchanging it back again (the smart contract instituted on the immutable ledger acting as a sort of back and forth vending machine). WETH is usually acquired via Radar Relay or 0x Portal through the provided interfaces there. Wrapped Ether (WETH) and its contract code can be seen on-chain on etherscan.io and a version of the Solidity code is also available on Github.

Sending ETH to the contract with the CreateToken function sends back the equivalent amount of "wrapped" ERC-20 ETH while calling the withdraw function with the number of tokens to redeem destroys them, sending back the ETH deposit. In a word, WETH makes Ether behave and transact like a token, which may be practical in the case of many applications (such as decentralized exchange). Eventually, WETH may become replaced by some Ethereum standard or another (something along the lines of ERC-223) or made obsolete after some upgrades to the codebase and the EVM itself.

WBTC: Wrapped Bitcoin

WBTC is a fully Bitcoin-backed (in 1:1 ratio) DAO-managed ERC-20 that officially launched on January 31st (now available for trading on several platforms). Tokenizing Bitcoin on Ethereum allows for much faster and cheaper Bitcoin transactions, enabling a whole host of Ethereum dApps to integrate and begin using it, that way giving both Bitcoin and Ethereum additional exposure and liquidity (most decentralized exchanges have only ETH/token and not BTC/token pairs, a gap WBTC is meant to bridge). One can think about it as an Ethereum certificate for ownership of bitcoin.

Wrapped BTC is governed by a consortium of institutions (below) performing different roles in the system. BitGo is the custodian that holds the assets (Bitcoins) and the keys to minting WBTC tokens. Kyber and the Republic Protocol are the authorized merchants who purchase the minting of tokens and from whom tokens are burnt as bitcoins enter into and exit out of circulation in Ethereum exchanges.

The parties forming the WBTC DAO. WBTC had been jointly initiated by Kyber, Ren (Republic Protocol) and BitGo, while partners include Maker, Dharma, bZx, Airswap, Hydrogen, Gnosis, Radar Relay, Blockfolio and others.

Each merchant has a key for initiating minting and burning of wrapped tokens. After acquiring wrapped tokens, users can transact them like any other ERC-20. Contract changes, adjustments and additions or removals of custodians or merchants are controlled by a multi-signature contract, the keys to which are held by institutions that are part of the managing DAO.

Custodian: BitGo

The custodian provides reliable, institutional-grade security for the tokenized ERC-20 Bitcoin and all WBTC in circulation is fully-backed, verified through on-chain proof of reserves. As the world's largest processor of on-chain BTC transactions (handling around 15% of all Bitcoin transactions globally), BitGo specializes in providing cryptocurrency financial services and regulatory compliant custodial solutions with high-security guarantees.

In 2018, BitGo launched the BitGo Trust Company introducing BitGo Custody as the first qualified purpose-built custodian for storing digital and crypto-assets. For WBTC, BitGo provides a pooled cold wallet (using off-line multi-signature keys) for supplying merchants and performs the minting (creation of WBTC) and burning (reducing the supply of WBTC when "unwrapping") operations that can be tracked by anyone through the public blockchain explorer.

Essentially, WBTC holders hold BTC by proxy via BitGo and on-chain contract arrangements. Upon redemption of BTC claimed by the ERC-20 coupon, the tokenized WBTC is burnt out of circulation. Making sure of the content of reserves is easier than, for example, with the notorious Tether (USDT) stablecoin since the accounting of both blockchains is public and open for audit and analysis at any time.

Merchants: Republic Protocol and Kyber Network

Merchants are the parties authorized to request minted WBTC tokens from the custodian. They are the institutions to which wrapped tokens are minted to and burnt from, in possession of the keys initiating either operation. Merchants play the important role of distributing the tokens, in this case, taken up by Kyber and Republic Protocol. Decentralized exchanges like these seem to be increasingly positioning themselves as Ethereum institutional and regulatory agencies, working to utilize the full potential of what Ethereum can offer.

Kyber's on-chain liquidity protocol enables instant token swap services that could be integrated into any application, while Republic Protocol provides dark pool exchanges for trading large volumes of assets via hidden order books, leveraging secure multi-party computations and zero-knowledge proofs (zkSNARKs). The Ren Project evolved from Republic Protocol as a separate virtual machine (RenVM) built around zero-knowledge protocols and strong privacy and security guarantees. When acquiring wrapped tokens through an authorized merchant, KYC'd users can atomically swap their bitcoin (via Kyberswap) for an equivalent amount of WBTC.

WBTC launched with a total of 26 partners and 15 DAO members. Among them are MakerDAO, Dharma, Gnosis, OmiseGO, Set Protocol, Kyber, BitGo, AirSwap, Blockfolio, Compound, Hydro, and others. A "Bitcoin maximalist" interpretation. Only, a sidechain by definition relies on the security and jurisdiction of its mainchain, i.e. Plasma sidechains are accountable to the Ethereum mainchain (which is not the case here). WBTC is simply a tokenized representation of BTC on Ethereum.

Overall, this introduces another important metric of measure in the crypto-economy given Bitcoin's status in that landscape. It must be reminded that the same thing is always much easier to implement in Ethereum than it is in Bitcoin, but sidechains as such are accountable to the main chains they derive from. Some decentralized exchanges can be conceived of as sidechains. And so-called Bitcoin maximalism appears to be a strange, supposedly radical expression of the crypto-libertarian ideology which claims influence from Austrian economics. One couldn't help but sometimes wonder, what would Hayek do/think about all this?

Wrapped Bitcoin Proof of Assets and Reserves

Bitcoin reserves backing WBTC can be publicly verified by opening the WBTC network order book. The "on-chain validation” link leads to the proof of asset page at wbtc.network/dashboard/audit. The token contract link on Etherscan is found here. All associated contracts have been audited by established firms including Solidified Technologies, ChainSecurity, Coinspect, and are publicly available. Any ERC-20 compliant Ethereum wallet can interact with WBTC by adding the token address: 0x2260fac5e5542a773aa44fbcfedf7c193bc2c599.

Public accountability and transparency are what is of critical importance in that context, not forgetting the original motivation and raison d'être of distributed crypto-economies and so-called crypto-currencies post-2008. But no less important is the issue of reconciling traditional structures and institutions with this newly emerging socio-technical paradigm of institutional technology and socio-economic coordination. Particularly given how the two are in many fundamental ways different in nature (as originating from and building upon an already globally distributed technology whose character is defined by open access and hyper-connectivity, or is otherwise rhizomatic).

DigixDAO and the DGX Token: Tokenized and Notarized Gold Assets on Ethereum

Digix is a Singapore-based early Ethereum DAO dedicated to tokenizing gold and precious metals within Ethereum via yet another Proof of Assets (PoA) protocol. At each step of the PoA process, proof records and audit trails are published permanently with IPFS and Ethereum. DGX tokens are divisible units representing one gram of gold redeemable from the custodian vault (The Safe House, located in Singapore).

PoA asset cards are stamped with the digital signatures of the entities involved in the chain of custody (and further validated with proofs of purchase and depository receipts, parmanently uploaded onto IPFS), namely Vendor, Custodian and Auditor. The Vendor, ValueMax Singapore, is a publicly listed company that sells London Bullion Market Associate certified gold bullion bars. The independent Auditor, Bureau Veritas Inspectorate, a recognized world leader in testing, inspection and certification services (with a 180 years history), checks the quality and quantity of the gold every quarter.

The participating Custodian Vault, The Safe House, is located in Singapore. Their vault can store up to 30 tons of gold, but in the future, Digix will look to include more vaults around the globe for regulatory redundancy. The Safe House takes full advantage of Singapore's jurisdictional and counterparty risk protections, particularly focusing on and specializing in providing such safe haven storage vaults.

Similar to the Maker DAO, the Digix DAO operates via two distinct tokens - a governance token (DGD) that grants holders the rights to vote on how the DAO allocates funds and allows them to make “active managerial decisions to any proposals submitted to DigixDAO.” And the DGX token, the actively managed product which the DAO ensures it represents a gram of redeemable gold (which can be purchased from Kyber or directly from the Digix marketplace app).

The big advantage tokenized gold has over traditional ways of trading it is the divisibility of the token without incurring any additional costs and "premiums". Also, it introduces a valuable kind of stablecoin to the Ethereum ecosystem, one which is not too correlated with the 'crypto' market overall and which the Maker DAO has planned integrating into its multi-collateral system (allowing to create CDPs, collateralized debt positions, with DGX and other kinds of assets).

sETH: Wrapped Short and Leveraged Positions via dY/dX Protocol

The dY/dX protocol is an Ethereum protocol for expressing crypto-derivatives (asset classes that derive their value from some underlying blockchain-based asset) and enabling margin trades. Derivatives are considered factors increasing market efficiency for the underlying asset by facilitating price discovery and allowing individuals to express more complex statements on price and volatility. As such, dY/dX consists of a set of protocols specifying the operation and execution of different types of financial products.

The "dY/dX" notation (also called Leibniz's notation) is known as the derivative operator, the basic rule of financial derivatives and formula for generally expressing gradients of difference (implicit differentiation) mathematically. If dY denotes the rising gradient (change in Y), dX is the lower bound or run gradient (change in X), and dY/dX is really (dY2 - dY1)/(dX2 - dX1) - the remainder from the difference. The dY/dX protocol makes use of 0x channels for decentralized off-chain exchange. Lenders sign a message in which they offer loans which are aggregated and listed on other platforms (both on-chain and off-chain).

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz was a prominent German polymath and philosopher in the history of mathematics and the history of philosophy. His most notable accomplishment was conceiving the ideas of differential and integral calculus, independently of Isaac Newton's contemporaneous developments.

A trader can open a margin position by sending a transaction to the dY/dX margin smart contract that contains the offer and locks in the deposit sent for issuing the market position contract. The on-chain contract autonomously mediates the exchange and issuing of margin trading short and long positions (as Nick Szabo first gave the example of the vending machine as the primitive precursor of smart contracts - they execute some instructions upon being triggered by what they've been programmed to react in response to).

Short Tokens and Margin Trading

In a margin trade, a trader borrows an asset and promptly trades it for another asset. The asset must be repaid to the lender, usually along with some interest, at some later specified date. Margin trading includes both short sells and leveraged longs. In a short sell, an investor borrows an asset and sells it for the quote currency, making money should the price of the asset decrease (as rebuying the asset to pay back the lender costs less than what it was originally bought for). The investor loses money if the price of the asset rises, since, vice versa, rebuying the asset to repay the lender would now cost more than the original sell-price.

That considered, a Short Token is a short position wrapped in an Ethereum token. Short tokens can be directly traded via Radar Relay like any other ERC-20. When holding a Short Token, one's return depends on the inverse price movement of the underlying token. In sETH/Dai for example, when ETH goes down, the price of sETH goes up (Dai, the MakerDAO managed stablecoin, is used to fund, buy and sell the token). Short tokens are useful in hedging risk and gaining upside in a downtrend, adding another market lever to Ethereum and the crypto-economy.

Short token positions are opened via the dY/dX protocol and last for 28 days. By the end of the 28th day the token expires and locks to the market price. Every short token is labled by the asset being shorted and the expiration (e.g., sETH 6/11). Short tokens can be either sold on Radar Relay or paid out upon expiration at expotrading.com.

dY/dX along with projects like the Dharma protocol for tokenized debt issuance are important developments for Ethereum and exemplify the possibilities of what could be accomplished within such distributed framework of decentralized exchange unbound from cultural and geopolitical constraints and state-governmental and bureaucratic regulatory limitations.

Universal Ethereum Standards and Contract Form Templates

Universally accepted technical standards that set a commonly accepted frame or format of how particular assets and objects are represented, registered and accounted for in the shared ledger are obviously an important component in ensuring frictionless flows of value, exchange and ease of interaction. EIPs (Ethereum Improvement Proposals) become ERCs (Ethereum Request for Comment) upon community approval. The informal governance process of Ethereum is similar to the well-known RFCs (Request for Comments).

"Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) describe standards for the Ethereum platform, including core protocol specifications, client APIs, and contract standards."

An RFC is authored by engineers and computer scientists that may come from many different agencies and bodies such as the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), the Internet Research Task Force (IRTF), the Internet Architecture Board (IAB). They take the form of a memorandum describing methods, behaviors, formal procedures, research or innovations applicable to the workings of the Internet and Internet-connected systems. Ethereum takes the same approach to standardizing protocols, methods and formal specifications within its infrastructure.

ERC-223: Token with Transactions Behaving like Ether Transactions

Originally proposed by an Ethereum Classic dev (Dexaran), ERC-223 defines the inverse of what WETH does - it makes token transfers behave like Ether transactions and offers a solution to losing tokens when mistakenly sending them to contract addresses. ERC-223 utilizes event handling that prevents tokens from being lost in unhandled transactions, making the transfer function throw an error on invalid transfers and canceling the transaction so no funds are lost, irreversibly locked in contracts that do not support/recognize them.

ERC-223 transaction handling. Checking if a given address (_to) contains bytecode (codeLength) to determine if it is a contract address or a wallet. If tokens are sent to a contract address, that contract must implement the tokenFallback function, else the transaction fails (the same way as if one would send Ether to a contract without the called function being explicitly defined as payable). The receiver contract interface is found here.

The economy of ERC-223 is such that users can send tokens to both contracts and wallets (both represented by public addresses on Ethereum) with the same function in a single step (instead of two, as commonly done in ERC-20), thereby increasing efficiency and lowering gas expenditure. At present, however, most Ethereum wallets don't support ERC-223 tokens.

ERC-223 contract interface. Unlike ERC-20, there's no allowance, approve and transferFrom functions. Instead of calling approve and then transferFrom, users can transfer tokens to contracts as simple as they would Ether.

Instead of abstracting away at the user interface level of an application (with the ERC-20 approve + doSomething) and therefore needing to trust the UI/UX developers, ERC-223 follows the Ethereum Classic reasoning of "code if law", implementing security on the lower levels.

ERC-777: More Transaction Handling Mechanisms, Token Registry and Event Hooks

Another fungible token aiming to improve upon and solve the issues with ERC-20 that relies on the ERC-820 (also backwards compatible with ERC-20). ERC-777 is focused on providing a wide range of transaction handling mechanisms and advanced features for interacting with tokens. It is highly customizable, allowing people to build extra functionality on top of tokens (such as a mixer contract for improved privacy or an emergency recovery function for bailing out upon loss of private keys).

ERC-820 uses a central registry of smart contracts on the Ethereum network. ERC-777 takes advantage of the same central registry to make contract functions easy to verify and instead of the 'transfer' and 'approve' functions it uses a 'send' function for transferring Ether itself (similar to the ERC-223 'transfer'). Another aspect of ERC-777 is allowing for 'approved operators' - parties that can approve smart contracts to move tokens on their behalf.

The above is the ERC-777 contract interface that the token contract must implement. The granularity function returns the smallest non-divisible unit of a token.

Both contracts and regular/external addresses can control, accept and reject which tokens they send or receive via the tokensToSend and tokensReceived functions (also that way avoiding the double call approve/transferFrom required in ERC-20). Wallets that do not contain the tokensReceived function can be backwards compatible via a proxy contract deployed for the wallet.

ERC-1155: A Multi-Token Standard

The ERC-1155 was announced by Witek Radomski, the CTO for the video gaming company Enjin. ERC-1155 takes a new method to describing tokens (non-fungible and otherwise). Items are stored in a single contract with the minimum possible amount of data necessary to distinguish one token from another. The contract state contains configuration data per token ID and all the behavior governing the collection.

In ERC-1155, one can send any number of items to one or multiple recipients in a single transaction, reducing gas costs and congestion on the Ethereum transaction pool (as was the case with Cryptokitties and ERC-721). The transfer, approve, melt, and trade functions all take arrays as parameters, which lets one perform between 100–200 such operations packed in a single transaction.

Summary and Conclusion

All the above should give one a good idea of the present state of development and maturity of Ethereum, as well as the explored avenues and areas of ongoing research. The direction Ethereum has taken significantly differs from the philosophy of Ethereum Classic, where a slower, more gradual and conservative approach to development and innovation is taken (one closer to the philosophy of Bitcoin). Regardless, one cannot deny that the entire space has been learning from the mistakes and mishaps of Ethereum, and while some never missed the chance to jump on the bandwagon of critique and tireless efforts to discredit and even disseminate aggressive, self-serving disinformation, others have quietly been taking notes on the side and yet others exploited opportunities to launch yet another "Ethereum killer". Either way, the value Ethereum has brought to the space - in experience and knowledge (the value of well-documented failures is more valuable than that of accidental success and the following desperate attempts by others to replicate it or improve upon it) is undeniable.

And while nobody can know for sure how things will unravel in the future ahead, continuous experimentation and active community discussion and debates in the long road ahead are fundamental prerequisites to the possibility of success. The incubation and hype periods seem to have cooled down beginning 2019, entering a more mature, stable phase and one more critical, self-reflective and less ideologically driven. And in the historical juncture we seem to find ourselves at, this critical phase transition characterized by rapid loss of confidence in governments and public institutions and eroding trust in traditional structures and even capital itself, paralel structures and institutions that we could transit to or fall back on are of fundamental importance in preventing a possible collapse and disintegration down to simpler levels of organization and operation, or in other words, an entering into a period of a dark age. As such, frameworks like Ethereum seem to offer a possible safety net of security, as when things get too unstable and unpredictable capital tends to flee to safety. Stablecoins and the volatility insurance institutions like the MakerDAO seem to actively work on developing could prove tremendously important (with the introduction of multi-collateral Dai and support for a wide range of assets to hedge risk with), but we mustn't forget that they are still in a way laboratories that need the parameters of reality and observing how assets behave and correlate in different circumstances. The periodic failures that take place are the price we pay for learning the way forward.

Dai, the MakerDAO managed stablecoin. MakerDAO is to Ethereum like what the International Monetary Fund is to the global economy or the Federal Reserve to the US economy. (Originally, it was proposed that Dai be pegged to IMF's SDR currency basket instead of the US dollar. But the end-goal is to diversify into all possible configurations of stability providing assets as collateral - such as DGX, REP and others, and develop a platform for flexible volatility insurance that provides protection against all kinds of scenarios and multi-shaded black swans.)

System-wide standardization and widely adopted simple mechanisms for smoothening friciton and paving the roads for capital flows are just as critically important, but we must also consider the levels of possible centralization they may in some circumstances introduce and what degree of centralization is acceptable in any particular circumstance. The Ethereum community has so far proven honest and genuine in their intentions, efforts and ethics and as such is self-regulating (despite the often unintended consequences), but we must always maintain a healthy and sober critical thinking attitude and extrapolate the effects of given set of conditions to their possible extreme manifestations, because as history has shown (for example), republics always tend to eventually develop into oligarchies just as stagnation (political, intellectual, economic) tends to allow corruption and rot to creep in. We must not forget our original motivations, neither allow them to turn into empty slogans of repetitive cliches. Instead of seeking opportunities to exploit quick profits in the rigged casino of the market, we should better consider investments and trading as making statements and pulling towards desirable futures to be. By making an effort to gain better understanding and not be cheated by people with questionable ethics, we contribute to the overall health and well-being of the system and by setting an example with what we do, we help trigger a cascading ripple effect across the system. We should consider things like Ethereum as toolkits and frameworks for building institutions - whether local, regional or international or commerical, financial, academic, professional or political. The rest is the creative efforts of our collective imagination and desire.
