I’ve been experimenting with colored grounds quite a bit lately, which can give a painting a more consistent tone and can influence the tint or ‘temperature’ in a warmer or cooler fashion. A Violet background has worked well for photo reproductions and plays nicely with skin color. Reds and Orange have added a lot of warmth and consistency to my 4 Cobalts palette. Sap Green and light Blue create some interesting interactions. I love working with Neon Pink, but it’s difficult to work organically in developing skin tone with such an intense color... nothing else can compete until you cover it up a bit.
