prolonged baby fever vs the knowledge that we will never have the money to raise a child properly
#ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh#i know lots of people 'make it work' with medium incomes but the fact of the matter is i would feel extreme guilt and anxiousness#knowing that we just don't have everything secured / squared away to provide all of the things that we would want to as parents#it makes me sad that we likely won't ever get there but i am also coming to peace with the fact that if its not for us then its just not#it doesn't have to be more serious than that#childcare in my area costs like 2000 a month and that's just so we could continue working at our current income#no money for a house#college costs the type of food we like to eat which is already expensive enough as it is#idk i would just want to be able to be a little bit more secure but every year shit gets more expensive#we had a conversation a month or two ago where we agreed that if we won some sort of lottery or SOMEHOW#came into a fuckton of money then we would do it no question#but there's a certain amount of financial requirements we'd both like to be able to meet before we considered it otherwise

What's the best food to have at a sleepover? I’d have a blast at a sleepover if my friends and I were to get a square-cut cheese pizza with a box of wings. Cheesy nachos with beef would be great too.
How did you meet the last person you shared a bed with? We were introduced by our respective friends.
Do you like the yellow cheetos better or the orange ones? I don’t like Cheetos, period. Cheese puffs never did grow on me.
Where did you buy the shoes you wore today? My mom got it for me two Christmases ago.
Do you have any half siblings? Nope. But this year I found out I have a half-cousin (and possibly half-cousins) from a trash uncle who apparently fooled around behind my aunt’s back, but I have no desire to associate with her or that entire family altogether.
How many DVD players are in the house? We still have two lying around but we haven’t used either in 6–7 years.
Do you like the last song you heard on the radio? I cried, because I needed to hear the lyrics that were being sung.
Do you know anyone who has been on TV? Sure, mostly some of my friends’ parents.
When going shopping for junk food, what's the first thing you pick up? My eyes usually dart to the Pringles before anything else. And if there’s also any salted egg chips that looks appealing enough for me to pick up.
How would you react if you found out you had a long lost sister? I think my literal first reaction would be to be pissed at my parents for hiding such a secret from me for a long time. It would depend on how they explain the situation if I end up wanting to meet her or if I can do without.
At sleepovers, do you usually stay up all night or actually go to sleep? Hahaha I’m the grandma that passes out. I’ve never successfully stayed up at a sleepover and for some reason I’m always the first one to start getting sleepy. I guess all my friends’ bedrooms are really that comfy.
Is there anything in the room you're in that's really dusty? [continued from last night] For sure. There are some things in my room I barely use or move around so it definitely wouldn’t be a surprised if they’ve since gathered up a fine layer of dust.
Do you know anybody with different colored eyes? Yeah, someone from my high school has this condition.
Are any of your relatives vets? [continued AGAIN from the night before last, lmao send help] As far as I know, no. We’re not really the type of family that produces doctors, and I believe we lean more towards law.
Who cleans the most in your house? Oh my mom, for sure. She wants all chores done a certain way, and she’s always genuinely happy to do everything herself.
Do you own any shirts that cost over $100? No. I think my most expensive shirts are my wrestling ones, which never went above P3000, I think.
What about any shoes? Do you think that's a lot of money for clothes? Yeah, well shoes are generally more expensive so I’ve definitely spent more on sneakers than I’ve ever had on a shirt. I think a pair of shoes that go for P5000 is fine because for the most part it’s also already a testament to its quality. I draw the line at P5000 shirts, because you’re only paying for the label at that point.
What's the movie theatre in your town called? Ours don’t have names. Most of our cinemas are housed within malls, so whenever we make plans to watch a movie we just mention the mall.
How many minutes do you consider late? Idk man, I prize punctuality a lot. People to me are either early, on the dot, or late.
Is there any jam in the fridge right now? No, we don’t really consume jam. We’re not a very spread-y kind of family, come to think of it. We prefer meatier stuff in our sandwiches.
What did you get your best friend for their last birthday? I learned iMovie throughout my UTI-slash-fever horror experience so I can make a video for Gab that compiled her friends’ greetings in time for her birthday. I wasn’t able to get Angela anything because I was still looking for a job then and didn’t have any source of income; and because Gab broke up with me on that day so I was too distraught to be doing anything.
What about your mom's and dad's last birthdays? My dad was abroad for his last birthday. I didn’t get my mom anything because we don’t have that kind of relationship.
What kinds of food do you dunk into milk? Uhm mostly none, because I never really have milk unless I’m at a hotel or at a friend’s, lol. I’ve dipped chocolate chip cookies into milk several times though, and those didn’t turn out bad at all :) I’m a fan of the mushiness.
Do you have any current or past teachers on your facebook friends? A couple of my high school teachers are still my Facebook friends. I never added nor received requests from my college professors, which I prefer tbh because I’ve always viewed college profs as having a more professional vibe compared to my grade school and high school teachers, who were like parents to me.
Are there any baby pictures of you up? Like, the room I’m currently in? No but my school portrait from Prep is framed and hanging on my wall, which is the closest thing. I was already 7, though.
Do you have any friends who have bleached blonde hair? Nah. I have a lot of friends who’ve dyed their hair over the years, but none bleached all the way through. Gabie did, but just for her tips.
How much sugar do you like in your tea/coffee? Lots. I need every trace of it feeling like black coffee removed, haha.
What color is the cereal in your cupboard? We don’t eat cereals in this family; we’ve always enjoyed a classic Filipino breakfast. Sometimes we’ll get cereals I guess, but we never eat them the traditional way; my mom and sister usually just snack on them straight from the box on non-breakfast hours.
Are you wearing any jewlery that a boyfriend/girlfriend gave you? No.
Has a boyfriend/girlfriend ever given you jewlery? Yes.
Have you ever seen the last person you kissed cry? Many times.
Would you rather work at a gas station or be a maid? I hate chores and touching other people’s stuff, so I’ll go with the gas station. I could meet different people from that job too, which sounds more interesting.
What's the closest store to your house called? Just Things. Basically sells hype merch, including the P5000 streetwear shirts I called out earlier, for all the hype heads in my area.
Do horror movies scare you more when they're 'based on a true story'? The biographical nerd in me obviously gets excited, but I don’t get scared. I get more invested when they include snippets or updates about the real-life counterparts and go beyond the vague ‘based on a true story’ banner.
Do you still talk to the last person who hurt you (emotionally)? Yeah but I really need some sort of coin bank thing for it for every time I do so because idk why I still hang around sometimes.
Is there an outdoor movie theatre where you live? Not where I live. But I do know that because of Covid, some malls outside of my city have started offering drive-in cinemas, which were never a thing here before.
What color was the last food you ate? Golden brown, yellow, black, red, green. It was a truffle and mushroom pizza that I treated my family to because I had gotten my first paycheck this week and I would’ve looked like an absolute ass if I spent it on anything else other than my family. I MEAN I wanted to treat them too, of course, but I won’t deny that there’s an underlying reason for me buying the food as well. Welcome to a firstborn’s life in the Philippines (and in Asia, tbh).
Have you ever seen your mom or dad drunk? My mom has been tipsy, but not drunk. My dad never lets himself get swayed by alcohol. He’ll still get a single bottle of beer, but I’ve never seen his demeanor change.
How expensive is too expensive for a pair of jeans? Anything above P7,000 or P7,500, maybe.
After seeing a movie, do you go to a site to enter a review about it? Nah, I’m not the Letterboxd type of person. I’ll sometimes tweet about a movie, but only if I found it good or intriguing enough.
Have you ever done that? No. I’m not the best movie reviewer, so even though I’m aware of Letterboxd’s or IMDb’s appeal I’ve always been too shy to share my thoughts or ratings just in case someone ends up criticsplaining a movie to me.
Would you consider McDonald's a restaurant? I know what route this question is getting to but I’m too tired to defend my thought process, so suffice it to say I love McDonald’s, lol.
Do your parents vote? LOL my mom only started doing so again when I registered - before 2016, she cast her last vote back in 1992. Of course, her opinions were wrong for both the presidential (2016) and senatorial elections (2019) haha.
My dad does not vote and he stopped giving a shit about Philippine politics when he started working abroad 20 years ago and increasingly spent more time overseas than he does in his home country. Which, honestly, as sad and bad as it sounds, I totally understand. He’s completely detached from the goings-on in our country that to make him vote would be just as useful as letting him purely guess his choices.
Are there any creepy pictures up on the walls of your house? We’ve never gotten such a comment before, so no.
What's the last thing you were excited to eat? The pizzas I bought tonightttttt :> I got truffle and mushroom pizza and quattro formaggi pizzas and they were from Motorino, this fancy (and pricey) place I used to go on dates in that I haven’t visited so long.
It’s hilarious because I didn’t even plan on buying any food today as I’m stingy with money...but in my shift today I was tasked to order food bundles for certain media partners we regularly collaborate with. I kept ordering all these fucking pizzas for people I don’t even know and I got so jealous???? So I ended up buying for myself at the end of the day HAHAHAH
Do you ever hit electronics if they don't work? I smack them against a surface, but I rarely hit them with my own hand.
Who’s the most romantic person you ever went out with? I’ve only gone out with one person and, her toxic traits aside, I highly doubt any future prospect would ever come remotely close to her.
Is there anything hanging from the ceiling in your room? My bedroom light.
How would you react if your best friend was pregnant/got someone pregnant? She’s not planning on having a kid any time soon so I would assume it happened by accident, and I would assume she would be in distress. That said, my instinct would be to be there for her and support her in whatever she does moving forward.
Do you know who Lisa Simpson is? Sure thing, she’s my favorite.
Have you ever had a crush on the last person you spoke to online? No. I’ve never even met her.
Have you ever seen the last person you hugged dressed up fancy? Sure, my grandma dresses up for parties and other formal events.
(If your parents married), Do you know where they got engaged? No. My dad didn’t even pop the question; at some point they just sat each other down, had a long talk, and decided they’d get engaged. Idk where it happened though. Maybe while on a date somewhere?
What color was the last cup you drank out of? Copper.
What was the last picture you printed of? I honestly can’t tell you. I’ve printed a number of documents for various adulting tasks lately, but I don’t know the last time I specifically printed out a photo.
What restaurant has the best fries? I’d have to go with Army Navy. Or if we’re going with fast food, Jollibee.
What does your mailbox look like? We don’t have one. Messengers just insert envelopes through our screen door.
Have you ever gotten something stuck on the roof? We have a rooftop, so that’s never been a problem for us.
Have you ever had a surprise party thrown for you? No. I don’t think I’ve ever been that important for anyone.
Is the room you're in organized? It can do with some fixing, but it’s not terrible.
Would your mom make a good president? She’d be the most organized, neurotic, and punctual president in the history of presidents, but I doubt she’d be of help in conflict resolution or law-making, or any decision-making aspects that go with being president.
The 2nd class you had last time you went to school: ever skipped it? I don’t think I ever skipped that class in the short time I took it before Covid took over.
Do your aunts and uncles have kids? Yeah, nearly everyone does.
Is this survey interesting so far? I liked it.
Do you say fancy or formal? Or something else? Depends on the context. I use both as I think they have different connotations anyway.
Does your English teacher have kids? The last English professor I had doesn’t.
Does your computer make a lot of noise? The fan whirs when the laptop gets too busy. The noise is definitely noticeable considering how quiet my laptop is 98% of the time; but I wouldn’t call it bothersome.
Do you see movies at home or in the theatre more? Home. I watch at the cinema like, a maximum of 5 times a year.
What's your favorite thing to eat during a movie? Potato Corner fries. Non-negotiable.

Waiting In Vain : Chapter 16
Bad Day.
Months had passed by. And the duo’s relationship had only went up from the beginning. Marley was surprised that she was not tired of Erik, there was never even a point where she wanted to be away from him. Of course they both had to live their separate lives , but being together was euphoric . Marley had never felt quite like this before , even with other man that she loved . This felt different.
Yes, she knew that it was love .
That’s what she told him, and even though he hadn’t said it back yet , she felt content . Marley couldnt hold how she felt about him in . She had to let him know she loved him one night , while there were laying on her couch . “We good , Marley” was all he said . He just held her tight until she fell sleep in his arms.
Erik showed her how much he cared for her every day. Flowers because it was Wednesday , foot massages when she was tired . Food whenever she was hungry and he even helped her find a new job . Marley was no longer faced with irritable complaints from consumers over the net . And no more slaving for the drunk men down at the bar with Becky.
Marley was now a proud employee at Steinway. Steinway was a global company . A trusted billion dollar business who created technology that controled security systems for some of the worlds most prestigious places . Mass museums, federal reserve, and most of all, protected government agencies .
Marley had a degree , but her major in Liberal arts she knew, would not get her in the door. Erik made her apply anyway .
“They might not even know they need you, always go for the job you think you won’t get” He encouraged her one night , while eating those famous tacos and watching Game of Thrones.
One resume, an exceptional cover letter written by Erik, and two interviews later...Marley was hired to assist the head of public relations. Her duty was only to serve the person who protected the brand of the company . Marley had been there for a while now, and was making a good amount of money.
It was her birthday on this day. She never made a big deal about it . Marley hadn’t had a party since her mom died . So to her , it was just another day . Most people in her life didn’t know when it was, just the few who were close to her . Becky knew and called her early in the morning with a long drawn out version of the birthday song . In the past , Tiana and her aunt didn’t even acknowledge her birthday. Trey would always buy her something expensive, but nothing memorable or noteworthy.
Erik knew that it was her birthday. Of course he was away for work, or whatever he did . Erik admitted... or hinted that his job wasn’t exactly what he told her before . She didn’t press him, but at times she questioned if what he did was legal . The gun was still in his dresser . “It’s not necessarily illegal” he’d toy with her mind whenever she asked him . She was no stranger to crime, seeing as Trey was the poster child for that . But he wasn’t as secretive as Erik . Nor was he as well paid .
Marley hadn’t talked to him all day . After numerous attempts at calling him, she figured he was busy . Until it came to the end of her work day . Her stress level was through the roof , constantly staring at her cellphone. Hoping that the next notification would be from Erik. That’s all she wanted . No party, no gifts , just Him.
Marley had received a birthday card signed by most of the employees . She knew it probably was company policy, but she was thankful . Marley had been there a little under two months , so most people didn’t know her well . To who she assumed was the head of the employee committee, walked by and wished her happy birthday . Marley had just finished typing the notes from the meetings her boss had. It was almost five , and she was off at four thirty .
The days leading up to her birthday were always filled with anxiety . She knew she would cry , she cried on her birthday every year . From loneliness, feeling like she was aging and yet so far behind in life . Most of all, she cried because it was another year without her mom. All day she had been fighting back her tears with fake thoughts of being happy . It was working, for now but she knew that eventually she would break . Becky begged Marley to come to the bar around seven that night . Before the sports crowd packed the bar . Becky wanted to give her gift before her work shift . Marley figured she’d eat fatty bar food and take a few shot alone. Or with some of her old co-workers. Ones who actually knew her and would be semi-genuine .
Since she was leaving later than usual, she was in a rush . The Steinway building was half an hour from her apartment . With traffic she would get home around six, that didn’t give her much time to get ready . Marley logged out of her work computer , gathered her belongings and rushed the halls to the elevator. She dashed through lobby to get to her car . Her phone buzzed in her hand , excitedly she glanced at it , praying that it was Erik . Marley didn’t even see the burly white guy walking towards her . She ran right into him and almost fell to the ground . He seemed to be in a rush much like her . All Marley could see was the back of his red slick hair and the flag of the Netherlands on his arm. Marley knew that because her old college roommate was from the Netherlands and had a flag on her side of the wall .
“Excuse you, fucking jackass!” Marley shouted . The rude guy was already outside of the building. Being the only black women in the lobby, everyone’s eyes were drawn to her already . Even more now since she shouted. She wanted badly to yell at them too for not addressing the man who almost knocked her down .
But , it was her birthday. She had some place to be.
She made it to her car , but she was still boiling with anger . Especially after she gave calling Erik one more shot . He didn’t pick up. “Fuck it!” She screamed , then punched her steering wheel . It honked abruptly, scaring an old woman who was walking by. A groan escaped her lips and she rested her head on the seat . She took a breath, the lump in her throat wanted for her to cry badly . Her lip trembled . Marley missed her mom right now , more than ever . She would make it better . Probably go fight the man who knocked her baby down. Marley laughed at the thought of it . Of those people thought Marley’s outburst was bad , they probably couldn’t have handled her moms .
Marley got herself home, late but it was nothing she could do about it now . She got ready to go to the bar , nothing special but she was cute enough. Her phone buzzed when she walked out of the door . It was nothing but a message from Team Snapchat , probably wishing her happy birthday . She giggled a little because that happened every year . Marley didnt bother to call Erik again, him not answering would only make her more upset.
She made it to the bar . A few cars were parked in the lot. The lights werent on. The windows were tinted but there was a small window space at the top of the building where light would shine through . Which wasn’t odd . Marley had worked shifts when the bar opened late . It was a family owned business and sometimes they were unprofessional and opened when they wanted to . Customers still came though . Marley would even get paid under the table some weeks , so they could avoid tax issues and healthcare costs .
She yanked on the door. It wouldnt budge , it was locked . She knocked on the door hard and announced that it was her.
“I’m coming!”
Becky’s voice rang through the closed door . Marley could hear the tampering of the lock . Becky opened the door wide , exposing the few co-workers who were waiting for Marley to come inside.
“Surprise!” They all shouted at the same time. She couldn’t believe it. A party, for her? She was important enough for them to go out of their way and do this. Becky walked towards her , holding a small chocolate cake with lit candles .
“Chocolate, my favorite, thanks guys!” Marley Jared chocolate cake, but she wouldnt tell them that . Everyone looked so pleased .
“Please don’t cry” Becky playfully rolled her eyes at her friend . Who seemed to be getting emotional
“It’s just-“ Marley began to speak, but got choked up . Her voice shook . She didn’t want to cry in front of everybody, so she quickly sucked it up with a deep breath. Becky couldnt help but laugh . She took her into her arms and hugged her . “I just hate my birthday, that’s all”
Not being able to cry was killing her . She looked around at everyone , overwhelmed at everything . Surrounded by people, she still felt alone . Nobody who loved her was there . Yes , these people cared but not in the way Marley needed .
“Do you want us to stop this ?” One of the other co-workers asked . He could tell by the look on her face that something was off. Marley shook her head quickly
“No, I’m thankful for everything” Marley put forth effort to place a smile on her face.
Marley took the time to hug everyone and thank them individually. They all started off with a shot of dark and they sang the birthday song to her . Which was always awkward. Then Becky did her renditioned version of the birthday song , where she twerked across the bar to brighten the mood .
Marley made a wish in her head, something she thought was so silly . When she was a teen she always wished that her mom would magically come back from the dead . Now that she was older , she knew it was impossible . But she still made that same wish . Then she wondered , if she could do two . There were no actually birthday rules because all of it is fake... right? She thought about something that would make her happy . Erik. He was real . And she wished that he would remain that way . Marley blew out the candles and they cheered .
“I’m sorry he’s not here” it was as if Becky could read her mind “And I had no way to tell him , I figured he would be with you” Marley ignored her. She gave Marley a small gift box , with a bow on top . It was from her . She opened it right away .
“No you didn’t” she said quietly. It was a pair of AirPods . She had just told Becky that she wanted a pair but didn’t want to spend the money on them. The fact that she was such an attentive friend really meant a lot to Marley . She could not stop hugging her .
“Tonight is not about him, it’s your birthday” Becky didn’t want the absence of Erik to ruin her special day.
“What if he’s dead?” Now Marley was being dramatic . Becky raised her eyebrows, she figured Erik couldn’t make it because of work stuff . Not anything this serious . “I haven’t heard from him all day”
“Doubt that” Becky casually handed Marley an envelope with a card inside . She figured it was a card from the bar staff.
“But still, this is not like him” she managed to rip it open while holding eye contact .
“He’ll call “
Marley pulled the card out if it’s envelope. Shockingly it was from Trey . She looked at Becky who was purposely avoiding eye contact . A few twenty dollar bills slipped from the inside before she caught them in her hand. They had not spoken since that last week of her living in the hotel . And when she found out about his child , she was completely done . “Trey came by before you got here, he wanted to catch you but I told him it wasn’t a good idea” Becky aligned a few shot glasses on the bar and filled them with Tequila . That always got Marley drunk , and her plan was to get her friend wasted .
Happy birthday beautiful
I miss you , call me.
He had hand written those simple words in the card. Along with some passage about how important the birthday person was. Marley skimmed through it, then slipped the twenties in her purse and put the card in the trash .
“No thank you” Marley spoke just how she would if Trey was actually standing there .
It took Becky pouring six shots to get Marley to finally stop checking her phone . And then seven shots to make her start talking about Erik. He always left the toilet seat up and in the middle of the night she would fall in. No matter how many times she told him not to, he would always forget . He always thought he was right , and could never admit that he had gotten something wrong . Marley was not the type of person who yearned for the last word . And it didn’t kill her if she didn’t get her point across. Not even knowing that it was what made them a match . He snored loudly when he slept, so if Marley didn’t fall first ... there would be no sleep . Then when he woke up , he never ate breakfast. Which freaked Marley out because she couldn’t function without breakfast each morning . Marley started to drag on about how much he worked out and perfected over his body . But at the same token, he’d scarf down a whole family sized meal of carbs . She was about to rant about his messy home but Becky stopped her . Even Becky couldn’t help but think about how Marley felt when she talked about her husband .
Becky had listened for long enough , the bar was now open to the public and she had to work . “Sounds to me like you guys have no real problems” she slapped the bar counter twice , Marleys head flew back .
“What!” She slurred, then swayed to the sound of Sicko Mode playing from the bars speakers . Drunk was exactly what she was now.
“Don’t sweat the small stuff , Erik is all you have... besides me of course”
Marley pondered on that statement for a while . She seemed to get lost into the view of her feet for a long time . The floor was spinning, she held on to the bar stool so she wouldn’t fall . She blinked a few times to try and sober up , it didn’t work well enough. Then , she got back to thinking about what Becky said . How Erik was all she had . Marley looked up to ask her what she meant by it, but Becky had walked away . Marley figured she had been out of it for a while . She was uncomfortably drunk , and really needed to go home .
Everyone was back working , and she didn’t have the strength or good balance to say thank you to everyone again . Maybe she’d send out a mass text in the morning, or maybe she wouldn’t. Marley just needed to leave. She snuck out of the bar . Becky would have stopped her from leaving if she saw her . Refusing to allow her to drive home drunk. Marley just knew that if she drove really slow, she’d make it .
So she sat in her car , took a deep breath and started the ignition . Thanking god that she lived close enough . Even though she knew god was not happy about what she was doing . Marley pulled out of her parking space slowly and made her way on to the street . She was doing great at pretending to be sober . Until she couldn’t , swerving in other lanes and unnecessarily pumping her breaks with caution. Tonight would have been a great night for the police to pull her over and actually do their job. They were probably harassing innocent people Marley thought, Insted of handling true crimes ... like the one Marley was committing in this moment .
She made it home safely , by nothing but pure luck . Her car was crooked , and slightly crossing the line of her neighbors spot . Marley would deal with it in the morning. Her apartment light was on. Since she was intoxicated , she didn’t see this as cautionary. Struggling with getting the key in the door, she managed to let herself in . It wasn’t until after she closed the door and began walking towards her room , that she seen Erik sitting on her couch . He stood up , holding a bouquet of flowers . Marley stepped back with her mouth wide open.
“Happy birthday baby” he smiled and walked towards her . She wanted to speak . She wanted to yell at him for not being there all day . She wanted to ask him how he had gotten inside of her apartment. But as soon as she felt his strong arms wrap around her ... she finally let out the cry that she had been holding in all day . Marley’s tears seeped into the arm of his shirt . He let her cry . “You had a bad day?” He asked her calmly. He felt Marleys head nod . The hand that was flower free rubbed against her back . He was trying his best to calm her down.
“I hate my birthday” her voice cracked , tugging on Erik’s soft side .
“I got you , and I’m gonna take care of you”
He pushed away from her , allowing the space between them . He kissed her forehead twice , then took a chance on her lips . “Wanna talk about it?”
Marley drew away from him and walked to the kitchen for a paper towel . She released with a deep sigh and giggled shortly.
“Nah” she wiped hers tear stained face then tossed it in the trash . Erik told her that he lost his phone this morning , and couldn’t find time to get another one today .
“How did you get in here?” They settled down on the couch. Close enough for Marley’s left thigh to wrap around his lap . She faced him .
“I’m from the projects . Breaking in to shit is like a right of passage” he admitted, nonchalantly he massaged her thigh.
“You broke in my house” she stated what was obvious, there was no reason for her to be upset . She knew Erik to be a man that did whatever he wanted to do.
“Ain’t nothing I can’t get into” he observed her for a second , she rested her head against the couch . Her eyes fidgety and unable to focus on one thing . “You drove home drunk like this ?” He asked , seemingly worried about her .
“I see you do it all the time” her fingers toyed with his dreads . He was so cute to her when he got serious. He was cute to her when he did anything honestly.
“Yeah but you ain’t me”
“The hypocrisy!” She shouted in dramatic form.
“So you using big the words tonight”
“Hypocrisy is not a big word, you’re just from the projects” Marley braced herself for his rebuttal, she knew he would have a comeback to match her witt.
“Don’t forget who helped you write that letter to get you that job. A nigga from the projects”
“You right , daddy” she gave in, even though they were only joking .
“I know I’m fucking right”
Marley rubbed her thumbs against his cheeks and moved in closer to him . “Just a minute ago , I was crying my eyes out” she mumbled , so close to his lips that he could feel her words . She kissed him , sweet and soft . “Make sure I never cry on my birthday again”
“That’s a lot of pressure” Erik told her .
“Can you handle it?” She toyed with him but Marley was being completely serious.
“I can handle you”
Erik yawned , and like clockwork Marley yawned too . It was contagious. Somehow his position changed to him laying completely on his back . Marley beside him still, one leg wrapped around his waist . They liked it that way . No matter where they were , they always came back here . Erik thought Marley had eventually fallen asleep, on account of her hard breathing . Until she spoke again.
“All you got me was flowers?” She thought back to when she first cake in. Marley eyed the beautiful bouquet on her coffee table . He busted out laughing , so hard that Marley had to laugh too .
“I was waiting for that question”
“So answer it then”
“I got you shoes”
“Where they at?” She pouted like a bratty child . Erik kissed his teeth .
“Where the birthday sex at?” He asked , as if she owed him and it was his birthday.
“I’m too tired , how about birthday morning sex?”
“I’ll give you your shoes after that” he rubbed her butt gently , in hopes to turn her on . It just made her more comfortable with the idea of sleep .
“I’m not a prostitute” she yawned again .
“You’re my prostitute”

fictober.13.: speech
#Fictober19 Prompt: 13. I never knew it could be this way. Fandom: Oxenfree Pairing: Alex/m!OC, Jonas/Alex (ambiguously maybe/maybe not one-sided) [future fic] Rating: T (no warnings apply) Tags: Alex is getting married, Jonas isn’t happy about that, implied stepcest Word Count: 2032
There’s a chime around the room as the man stands, tapping silverware against his crystal glass. Clean cut, clean shaven, well dressed, looking like he just rolled out of a J. Crew catalogue. That formal kind of casual. Everything about this event screams expensive informal.
The invite said casual wear. Jonas is under-dressed. As per usual, with this group. (Apart from Alex, that is. At least, how she dresses around him.)
“Thank you all so much for being here with us this weekend, for such a momentous event in our lives,” the man begins, his teeth too white as he smiles that too straight smile. “Alex and I are so grateful to all of you.”
Bullshit.
Jonas’s head cocks slightly, chiding himself. That’s not fair. He probably is legitimately grateful. He’d better be.
“Before the ceremony on Sunday, I just wanted to take this opportunity - with a much smaller audience - to say a few words. So… be patient with me, okay, I usually only make speeches with a nice array of visual aides to back me up.” The room laughs politely.
The man (Jason. Jason Flemming.) clears his throat, and his lips have that little quirk that Jonas reads as smug. Which might be unfair. He has to keep reminding himself not to be unfair. Cause Alex loves him. (Maybe.)
Jason pulls out a note card, but only glances at it briefly. "I never knew it could be this way."
His hand is on the back of Alex’s chair. He’s got a watch that probably costs more than half of Jonas’s wardrobe. Jonas watches it carefully, and tries not to see Alex’s adoring look up at her fiancé. Soon to be husband. 48 hours. Less, actually.
“I can honestly say that I am truly blessed to have Alex by my side,” Jason continues, and his hand slides onto her shoulder, squeezing for a second, even as his eyes watch the rest of the room. It’s something that irritates Jonas just a little bit. That he’d take his eyes off his bride-to-be for even a moment. “I have had the privilege to watch her grow and mature and develop into the woman she is today.”
Jonas’s jaw clenches, and he’s too focused on his breath, on keeping his temper in check, because that’s just—
“If you had told me, the night I met Alex, that years later she’d be my wife, I never would have believed you. I would have looked at her - dancing on a table, I kid you not, the night we met - and said there was no way that she could ever be tamed. Yet here we are, four years later. Alex is wearing white - and you know that’s a feat in and of itself - and my parents are thrilled to call her their daughter in law.”
Tame her. He wants to tame her. Alex isn’t meant to be tamed. Tempered, maybe, but never tamed. Yet that’s what this Jason has done. Slowly, over time, but gradually he’s been sanding away at her rough edges, polishing her up, smoothing her into something pretty to stick on his shelf.
Maybe.
All of this is conjecture on Jonas’s part, of course. It’s not like it’s something Jason has done maliciously. And Alex may have been just as complicit. But it feels wrong.
“Tonight never would have been possible without all of you; our family and friends,” he goes on. “I’m sure my own parents are well aware of our gratitude and - well, mom, I’m sure Alex is thankful for the pearls as well-” Pearls. Alex in pearls. It’s too cookie-cutter country club. Jonas glances to Alex, finally, and she’s looking just a little nervous. A little bit put on the spot, offering a crooked smile to her very blonde soon-to-be mother-in-law. “-but I want to extend my personal thanks to Alex’s family as well.” Jason himself has dark hair, like his dad. Who’s wearing Hugo Boss. To a rehearsal dinner that was labeled casual.
“To Alex’s father, David; thank you. Without you, this never would have been possible.”
Without David’s threat to stop paying Alex’s tuition. Alex had been utterly distraught, and Jonas had been the one comforting her through it, through her security crisis, when she felt like she was just hovering over a precipice of no education and no savings. The ‘compromise’ that had come to pass moved Alex out of their house and into her dad’s. She got Thanksgivings with them, but Christmas was with the new family. Jonas knows she never really felt at home there. It was why she took every break she could to come visit. But it was never the same, not really. They never had what they used to. Not that Jonas didn’t want it.
“To Alex’s stepmother, Anne; thank you, for your kindness and hospitality. You truly are the perfect hostess, and I honestly think my mother envies you.”
Translation: good little housewife. Alex may not have brought it up recently, but that was one of those things she’d mentioned a lot after the move. Feeling like she had to be performing around her new extended family. Like she was constantly being judged, like they were deciding if she was worth the investment. She was terrified, and Jonas was her shoulder to cry on as often as he was her guilty pleasure. Not— not like that. Not since they were teens. But he was the one she could wear sweats around every day, and stay up with til 2 watching horror movies (her choice, not his), and unabashedly eat all the processed foods banned in Anne’s home. He was her pillow and her ride home and the reluctant participant in every instance of acting out that she couldn’t do around her dad. Well, maybe not every instance. He got the inside scoop on some of her wild nights in college as well.
Until Jason. Until fucking Stephanie, and Casey, and Jason. Being brought into the Stepford fold, as he so uncharitably considered it (to himself, never aloud). Their gentle guidance.
It’s not fair— Jonas knows it’s not fair to think of them that way. Alex really does like them. And he’s met them and… well, aside from being kinda… basic, they aren’t too bad. Just sorta boring. Not exactly the type to go breaking into old amusement parks, or climbing around unfinished construction sites, or deciding that 21 was the year to cross bungee jumping off of her bucket list. They were cosmopolitans, she was a shot of jaeger with a coffee chaser. Unorthodox, and an acquired taste that you couldn’t really forget. Also, maybe a little fucked up on the palate. His lips twitch at that thought.
“To Alex’s mother, Grace; thank you. I have never felt such warmth as I do around you and Martin. Martin, as well, you have always made me feel part of the family.”
Jonas’s dad is smiling. He’s too easygoing. And Jason is… unobjectionable, Jonas supposes, grudgingly. Business major. Not a frat boy, but still in a fraternity. He’s generous, at least, and conscientious. Always makes an effort to follow up on things they’ve talked about in the past. He can even dial down the rich-kid thing, when he stays with them in Camena. But that’s kinda the annoying part; that he’s not that bad. Just irritatingly unobjectionable. He’s nice to Alex, he is. He’s patient with her. And he’s soft and affectionate when it matters, but… But Jonas still gets her calls when she’s upset about something. He’s still the one getting called at 3am so she won’t wake up her fiancé with panic from nightmares.
“To Alex’s brothers—”
Jonas tries not to wince. Aside from just the dropping of the step distinction, being compared to Alex’s other stepbrother is… well, insulting. The douche is a workaholic med student, who’s never in a good mood. Who can never resist the chance to throw insults at Jonas over his vocational schooling and lack of a four-year degree. In layman’s terms: Will is an asshole.
“Will; I am thrilled to no longer be the youngest child! Finally, someone to give noogies to, and lecture about— well, nothing, you’re way more educated than I am,” he grins as the room laughs. Will is smirking, and Jonas resists the urge to roll his eyes. “I fully believe that you will be the next top surgeon wherever you decide to take your talents after residency.” Optimistic, assuming the douche is gonna be a half-decent doctor, when Jonas already knows his bedside manner must be horrific.
“Jonas;” Jonas tries to put on a slight smile. It’s easier if he looks at Alex, whose eyes are bright and appreciative and warm when she looks at him. “I really do have to thank you.” Jason sounds sincere. It almost makes Jonas feel guilty. Almost. “From the bottom of my heart. I have no doubt-” Jason breaks off, speaking more casually, speaking to the room at large, with a crooked smile that feels like something he probably picked up from Alex; “-Have you guys met Jonas? Look, when I started dating Alex— he’s an intimidating guy, right?” Jason grins, looking back at him. “I have no doubt that if you ever thought I wasn’t good enough for your baby sister I would’ve been kicked to the curb in a matter of seconds - either literally or figuratively.” Baby sister. Yeah, he’s never thought of her that way. Though the rest of that is… close. There may have been times Jonas grumbled that Alex’s boyfriend wasn’t quite enough of a dick to actually deserve a threatening.
Jason goes on, jokingly. “I always have this sneaking suspicion that Alex only gave me a chance because she misread my name as Jonas instead of Jason.” There’s a tittering of laughter, and Jonas’s eyes flick to Alex, who’s blushing a little, a hand over her eyes as she shakes her head. She’s still smiling, though. It’s cute. “So for that I have to be insanely thankful.” It’s less cute when Jonas spots Jason’s hand rubbing reassuringly at Alex’s shoulder.
“Alex goes to you for everything - I think your name comes up more than the rest of my entire family-” he jibes, teasingly. It’s frustrating that he’s having a good sense of humor about this. When Jonas has always felt a little… guilty. About that. “...and you have been the most supportive stepbrother she could have ever asked for.” Oh. Oh that’s something that makes Jonas’s lips curve up a bit with his own little touch of pride. Because that’s Jason siding with him over Will. Which is kinda nice.
“It’s a little unorthodox to have a Man of Honor, but Alex has always been a little outside the box. And, I’ll admit, I was pretty jealous of you once upon a time.” Again, Jonas looks to Alex, who’s rolling her eyes, but hasn’t taken her eyes off of him. She’s still blushing. It kinda makes his stomach flip a little bit. “But taking the girls to Vegas, that was really taking one for the team, and your patience is utterly commendable— being the cock in the hen do, so to speak.” Jason has that slightly sheepish smirk as a few people - including Alex - giggle a bit at the words.
Right. Vegas. That had been…
Jonas’s brow furrows for just a second as he studies Alex. She’s still bright eyed and glowing. Like a girl in love. Even if he’s… he’s just not sure if she is. Not after Vegas.
“But that’s enough about that,” Jason smiles, gesturing to the room in a sort of apology for going on. “Suffice it to say; I’m thrilled to have not one but two new sets of parents to buy Christmas gifts for, and two new siblings to rib me about all of my bad life decisions. Luckily— I know that this isn’t one of them.” Jason finally looks at Alex. And… yeah, okay. He looks happy too. In love. Which… well. It’s good, probably. At least he’ll care about her.
“So I invite you all to raise a glass. To all of them, and to Alex. For being exactly what I needed.”

When we talk about how poor the American healthcare system is, many of our first thoughts are to those who cannot afford any type of insurance, and while that is a huge deal and definitely needs to be addressed, I want to talk about the people who do have insurance but still cannot afford to get health care.
I have insurance through my employer. Every week, $32.94 of my paycheck goes toward my insurance. That’s $131.76 a month and $1,712.88 a year. My deductible is $1,350.00 - that means I need to pay $1,350.00 out of pocket before the insurance company will even pay anything toward my health care costs. Which really means, I need to pay $3,062.88 of my own money a year before my insurance company will contribute.
And what I’m paying for is the most basic package because I cannot afford to pay into something better. This number is solely for a single person, and the weekly payments are fairly low compared to what a lot of other Americans pay toward their insurance. This is for a single person. People with partners or children will see this cost exponentially increase.
That $1,350.00 deductible will only be chipped away if I see doctors who are in network. Which seems fair enough until you need to see a specialist. Trying to find a good, compatible specialist in network can almost be impossible depending on where you live. Even if you can find someone, that specialist is most likely going to have a rather significant waiting list.
So what do you do? What if you absolutely need to see someone right away?
You can:
Wait to see that specialist who is in network and hope nothing gets worse - but you could still need to pay them out of pocket anyway if your deductible has not been met
Find a specialist who is out of network and definitely pay out of pocket, though you probably cannot afford it and could now be looking into serious medical debt if they will even see you
Go to urgent care, wait for hours, and hope it’s something they may be able to assist with - chances are they will refer you to a specialist anyway
Just don’t go anywhere and continue on with whatever is wrong until it gets to the point that:
You have go to the ER - definitely accruing medical debt or
You die.
While I appreciate what former President Obama was trying to accomplish with making it mandatory for everyone to have healthcare, he was unable to implement it in the way that it needed to be implemented. That was not completely his fault - the push back from the Republicans is what really created this bastardized version of “universal healthcare” we have today.
Right now, you are penalized every year if you do not have insurance. In 2017, it was 2.5% of your annual income - it’s expected to increase for 2018. This penalty could equate to less than what you pay if you have insurance, but you’re expected to pay this in whole come tax time - an extra expense most people cannot afford.
Due to the greed of the insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies, and corporations as a whole, many Americans are paying into healthcare they cannot actually use. They cannot afford the out of cost price to even get through their deductible, so they either end up in further debt or continue to exist with whatever ails them.
As of 12/12/18, here is a breakdown of moderate to severe mental and physical issues I cannot completely afford to take care of due to high deductibles or no coverage at all:
CTSD (continuous traumatic stress disorder)
Depression, anxiety, and disordered eating
Chronic fatigue - has been getting considerably worse over the past few months to the point I’ve been sleeping 12+ hours on my days off and sometimes oversleeping on days I do work
Wisdom teeth removal
Tooth decay - I am completely dependent on sensitivity toothpaste at this time and even then I still have moderate discomfort
Bone spurs/calcium build up/loss of movement in my right shoulder - this happened to my left shoulder as well; the bone spurs caught my tendons and began to rip at them which then caused frozen shoulder
Hand pain/arthritis
Constant nausea - most food causes me to feel like I’m going to vomit, even when I don’t eat I feel mildly nauseous
Fevers when I start my period
Intermittent pain/bleeding during intercourse
Literally a growth in my uterus that I need a biopsy on
Due to other life expenses and debt - mostly caused by medical reasons - I cannot afford to get treatment on all of these issues in a timely manner. I’ve been prioritizing my mental health, which means my physical health will have to continue to deteriorate until I’m in a more mentally secure place.
I could actually have uterine cancer - cancer has been the cause of death for practically everyone on my father’s side of the family - yet I cannot afford to follow up on it because I have suicidal tendencies and may literally kill myself if I don’t continue mental health therapy. It hurts my teeth and makes me nauseous to eat, I’m constantly tired, and my right shoulder has been dramatically losing it’s range of motion...but the only thing I can do at this time is take care of my mental trauma so I can stay alive.
To make matters even more fun, my counselor isn’t even in network so my visits are not reducing my deductible at all, but she’s been the only effective therapist for me. We should not have a system where I need to choose between a good fit therapist or someone who will be cheaper yet not help me in the long run. We should not have a system where someone has to chose between dying due to their mental health or dying due to not being able to follow up on their physical health.
The point in me sharing my health concerns is not to throw a pity party, I can manage, but because it’s so common place in America right now that what I’m saying is probably relatable for far too many people. It’s probably even laughable to people who are going through much worse situations. The point is, this is common right now due to our current healthcare system and it’s absolutely disgusting. And if you don’t believe that this is “normal”, ask people you know when the last time they even had a standard check up was; don’t ask your well off friends or friends who have good insurance, ask your “average” friends.
So if the employer based insurance can be so awful, why not get private insurance instead?
To be frank, private health insurance is completely unaffordable for most Americans. Just a quick search on Google states that for a single payer, the average cost is $440 a month for private insurance in 2018. That’s more than double what I pay with my employer based insurance. While the coverage and benefits may be better, it’s not an expense that is feasible for most Americans.
Additionally, not everyone will qualify for the ACA. Even if you do, you’re going to find it is mostly those high deductible plans as mentioned before. Their monthly cost may be lower than the other private insurance, but you’re still in the same situation where you may not be able to pay through the deductible which means little to no medical visits.
So why not find a job with better insurance or go to school to get a job to afford better insurance?
Both of those are completely unrealistic solutions.
First, just up and finding another job is not an easy task. It takes time to fully look into companies, apply, interview, and even then you probably won’t get the job. Most companies will not disclose to you what their health insurance plan is either; they will tell you they offer it but not if it’s a high deductible plan or a copay plan. Additionally, most corporations do not even offer copay plans to their standard employees anymore as they are more pricey for the company overall.
Starting college so you can “get a better job” is not something everyone can do. It does not matter if you’re going for a trade or a degree, college takes time and money to complete. Not everyone has that time, energy, or the financial ability to do so - especially if you’re already dealing with debt and mental and physical issues.
It’s incredibly ableist to assume people can “just go back” to college or trade school. Nor is it a good mindset that only certain people should be able to get health care, that it’s something to be “earned”, when we as a whole society have the means to provide for everybody.
The government absolutely needs to get more involved with what they allow corporations and insurance companies to get away with when it comes to healthcare. Healthcare should absolutely not be a commodity, it should absolutely not be a business, it has to be a basic human right.
We allow these insurance companies to make these ridiculous packages where they may never even have to pay a single cent of their own money to most of their subscribers. The corporations have the choice between spending more on their employees and offering the actual good insurance people can use or they can cut corners and costs and offer their employees the high deductible plans instead. Both of these statements are crazy on their own, but combined it creates a cataclysm in society where the life expectancy is literally going down for the first time in history because people cannot afford to get the treatments that they need.
It’s 2018, almost 2019, that is so unbelievably messed up that I find it hard to wrap my mind around it. We absolutely have the means to take care of one another, to create a healthcare system that is not made to create profit but to help each other instead. That’s the whole point of society. We have created these large communities to help one another, not use one another for material greed - yet saying otherwise is considered “revolutionary” and that’s completely unacceptable.
There is no logical reason we allow this to continue. There is no emotional reason we allow this to continue. There is no reason at all for us to allow others to suffer when we have the means to contribute and take care of others who need it, whether that be with healthcare, food, shelter, or otherwise.
Capitalism is a disease which has unfortunately infected a vast amount of people in America and elsewhere. There are people who legitimately believe that food, water, shelter, and health are things to be earned and things to make profits from. Resources that are essential to survival should never be seen as a way to make money.
Humans do no exist for profit - no life should exist for profit.
This mindset of “us against them” or if another human-being “deserves” human rights needs to be 100% destroyed. Our planet is literally dying, our animals are literally dying, and our fellow humans are literally dying in this toxic, capitalist system we have created. The planet and ourselves cannot be sustained in this type of society.
A select few people are murdering us so they can continue to hoard their wealth and pit the rest of us against each other. We are in much larger numbers than them and we have the ability to make meaningful changes - we need to do so.
We need to stop being silent when we see injustice and let these people know we will not tolerate this decay any longer. Our future sincerely depends on this.

When Rosalina Hernández and her husband moved into their studio apartment on Los Angeles Street in South Central LA 15 years ago, the place was just for the two of them and the baby they were expecting. Back then, it wasn’t too hard to find what they needed: an apartment they could afford with just a bit more space.
But as their family grew, they remained stuck in place. Eventually, six people—Rosalina, her husband, and their four children—were sharing the one main room, a small kitchen, and a bathroom. Today, the tidy living room is also the dining room and bedroom; the bathroom serves as a makeshift closet. “It is hard, because we’re six,” Rosalina says in Spanish, clasping her hands in her lap. “It’s too small for six.” When her oldest son, now a freshman in college, needed to concentrate on schoolwork, he’d lock himself in the bathroom until the early-morning hours.
Her children ask her why they can’t have their own rooms. Her second-oldest son has always had a particular dream: to have a house, a dog, and a tree. “I would have liked to,” Rosalina says haltingly, wiping away the tears. They’ve looked for a bigger place, but they just can’t afford it. “We have to choose between [paying more] rent [for] a bigger space, or giving [our children] food and shoes.” They currently pay $700 a month in rent, something that Rosalina and her husband can afford on his salary as a garment worker. A three-bedroom apartment in LA easily goes for more than triple that. Soon, though, the Hernándezes will have no choice: All of the residents in their building are being evicted. The owner has decided to sell it, and a developer plans to raze it and build a new complex in its place. Many families have already left, plywood nailed over their doors to mark their departure. The Hernándezes were able to get a year’s extension because their youngest daughter has a severe learning disability, but the grace period ends next May.
The uncertainty has taken its toll. Rosalina’s 4-year-old daughter asks her, “Mommy, am I still going to have my same friends? Mommy, am I going to have my same teacher?” If she could, Rosalina would keep her family in that same small apartment—at least it’s home. “Cuatros paredes tienen historia,” she says. Four walls have a history.
Among American cities, Los Angeles is second only to Las Vegas (and tied with Orlando, Florida) in having the severest shortage of affordable housing for its poorest renters, with just 17 homes for every 100 extremely low-income families. The median rent for a one-bedroom apartment is nearly $1,400 a month, making it one of the most unaffordable markets in the country. Over half of the renters in LA are paying more than 30 percent of their income in rent, above what’s considered affordable; for nearly a third of those residents, rent eats up more than half of their income. “It’s not a housing crisis,” says Larry Gross, executive director of the grassroots group Coalition for Economic Survival. “It’s a housing catastrophe.”
When rents are that high, those people lucky enough to find a place have to make other difficult choices. “They have to sacrifice health care, food, clothing for their children, education, transport—all the basic necessities,” says Dagan R. Bayliss, director of organizing at Strategic Actions for a Just Economy, which is working with Rosalina and her family. Many families have two or even three people living in a single room to bring down costs. More than half of the most heavily crowded areas in the country, where the homes have more than one person per room, are located in Los Angeles and Orange counties, according to US Census data spanning from 2008 to 2012.
“It’s not a housing crisis. It’s a housing catastrophe.” —Larry Gross, Coalition for Economic Survival
Other people decide to move where rents are cheaper, but that often means longer commutes and higher transportation costs, not to mention leaving behind family or a familiar community. The Hernándezes have considered it. Rosalina’s sister and brother-in-law went to San Bernardino, where the rents are much lower, but her husband would have to drive more than an hour into the city for work every day. He currently walks to his job, and Rosalina can walk to her children’s schools, so they don’t need a car. If they moved, they’d have to shoulder that extra expense and travel time. Still, many working people make that trade-off. “We’re becoming a tale of two cities: the very rich, and the very low-income who are on some type of subsidies,” Gross says. “The middle class, the working class, are being pushed out.”

As part of the week leading up to Chuseok my school was super busy. My students had soccer games in the middle of the day, there were cultural festivities and guests and all sorts of fun things that meant I barely had any classes at all. The only day where I was with my students at my main school for the majority of the day was when we all went on a field trip to Yongin which is an area near Suwon, South of Seoul. We went to a folk village that my coworkers had trouble explaining to me beyond “The vice principal thinks it will be good for you.” It’s been awhile since I’ve been invited to go on one of the field trips so I was excited.
We took three buses to Yongin and as soon as we were there we headed straight to one of the performances. There are about three small performance areas all next to each other that host different shows. I managed to see three throughout the day. The first one we all went to was Equestrian Feats 마상무예 which happens twice daily at 11:30 and 3:00pm. It was really fun to watch the performances and tricks they were able to do.
There was however limited seating and availability to see. By the time we arrived most of it was already taken up by other school groups on field trips.
After the equestrian feats performance we split up for lunch. The students packed picnic lunches and all ate together with their classes and homeroom teachers, except for the older students who were allowed to do what they wanted and their teachers joined the other miscellaneous staff like myself at a restaurant. It was near the entrance where all the other food stands and snack shops were. However it had plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, unlike the stands. The restaurant offered a variety of Korean food and was set up like a Korean food court. You order your food, pay, and then head towards the corresponding counter to give them your receipt and wait for your food. They sold bibimbap and rice dishes, soups and stews, grilled fish and noodle dish, a variety of meat platters like jokbal (a sweet pig feet dish) and snacks. The majority of my coworkers ordered Andong-style wild vegetable bibimbap (8,000 won). I like bibimbap but it usually comes with gochujang already a part of the dish and thus spicy. Even though the menu didn’t make it look spicy what my coworkers ended up with did have that red pepper paste in it. Instead I ordered the Pyongyang-style cold buckwheat noodles or 평양 물냉면 which was refreshing on such a humid hot day and cheaper at 7,000won. Everything like water, chopsticks, scissors, spoons and accoutrements were near the pick up counters.
After some confusion I learned that I didn’t have to stay with anyone and could just wander about at my leisure until we met up later, so I headed off to explore the amusement park and see what it was. It was cute, with interesting looking buildings.
I found some of my students waiting in line for the Viking and buying gelato in some of the shops. There are about 15 rides and it’s a popular spot leading to long waits. My students told me that they didn’t ride a lot of them due to how long some of the lines were or the wait time. They had fun though, a few even went in the Ghost Zone which tells stories about the different types of ghosts found in Korea. It costs 3,000 won per adult and 2,000 for children (2,500 for teens) to visit. This isn’t the only scary ride, there is also one called “Legendary Hometown” which is 500 won more expensive no matter the age then the Horror of the Ghost Zone. I am not sure, since I didn’t go in, how much of these rides would be easy to understand since they seem to be story based.
After bidding my students farewell to wait in lines I headed across the river to visit the folk museum and some of the more historic and cultural buildings.
The first spot I visited was Seowon which was a Confucian Institute. It was also one of the filming sites for Korean dramas. Because of how big the Korean Folk Village is and all of its historical grounds it’s a popular spot for historical Korean dramas to be filmed at, having hosted film crews for various shows since 1983.
Nearby were other experiences like viewing traditional houses and how they vary depending on region, a ferryboat ride experience that was available only in the afternoon and by buying tickets at the nearby convenience store for 2,000 won for children and 3,000 won for adults.
I also visited the folk museum which had some English but not enough for me to fully enjoy it. There were many cartoons about Korean traditions and beliefs but they were in Korean. There was plenty to look at though and I was quite happy to see some old type pieces that made me missing using the printing press at my college.
Throughout the grounds were plenty of places to get snacks or drinks. Including a scholar’s home that had been converted into a traditional cafe with beautiful art.
I didn’t get anything. Instead I pressed on and found a pocket of my students sitting around eating ice cream which seemed like a good idea.
There were also a lot of other traditional buildings including one where a fortune teller stayed.
At this point it was time to head back to where the performances were held and meet up with my coworkers and students. I ended up catching part of the Farmers Music and Dance 농악놀이 performance that happens twice at 10:30 am and at 2:00 pm across from the event we were all meeting up for.
Before going home we watched the Acrobatics on a tightrope 줄타기 which I was able to see once before in Suwon. Like the other performances this occurs twice daily at 11:00 and 2:30pm. At this point I saw all of the large performances except for the traditional wedding which happens at the Nobleman’s mansion at 12 and 4pm. (except during winter from December through February)
We got good seats to see one of the tightropes but were blocked from seeing the other. I’d try to get a seat somewhere where you can see both because we were unlucky and the performer used the rope that was blocked partially from our view. The students greatly enjoyed the show and it was fun. I noticed that the host for the show was the same one who’d hosted the equestrian event and the farmer’s music and dance. From the two tightrope performances I’ve seen it seems that the performer is always accompanied by music (in this case a janggu, traditional drum) and someone else to talk with who adds some sort of comedy to the performance. It’s always fun.
I had a good time walking around the Korean Folk Village on my own. I do wish I’d had time to pop into the information building before going in to get a map with things to do before I’d gone in and been at a loss of where I was or what there was to do. I didn’t even find their website which is available in many languages including English here. My students had a lot of fun during the day, learning and enjoying their time. It seems to be a very popular spot for school trips and I can see why, there’s a little bit of educational, cultural and historical things included with fun performances and a small amusement park. Hours vary by season and weekday versus weekend but it opens daily at 9:30am and tends to close between 5:30pm and 7pm. There was plenty to do and it was very easy to spend the majority of our day there. Ticket prices range from 13,000 won to 27,000 won.
한국민속촌 Korean Folk Village As part of the week leading up to Chuseok my school was super busy. My students had soccer games in the middle of the day, there were cultural festivities and guests and all sorts of fun things that meant I barely had any classes at all.

So after writing a fic for glaiveweek, an idea came to my mind to grow that fic a bit more. So here it is. I’m starting new series, a mafia AU which basically will cover the lives of most of the glaives from the time they are about 16. I will have slightly different approach to the fic, all chapters will be a bit like stand alone stories, which could be read separately or as a part of the bigger picture. Eventually the fic will grow into Nyche fic, but slowly (sorry) and then Lunyx (sorry). Most of the chapters will be from Luche’s POV, but I’m not excluding the possibility of writing chapter or half a chapter from someone else’s POV. Hope you guys enjoy.
If you want to be tagged, let me know. If you want to be untagged, let me know, no hard feelings, I fully understand that not every fic is everyone’s cup of tea.
Fic Title: The Derelict Chapter: Chapter I Rating: G (some swearing, later chapters might be NSFW, warnings will be posted) Pairing: Luche/Nyx Other characters: Pelna, Clarus, Titus, Libertus, Selena Summary: Sixteen-years-old Luche is throw into real life after losing his part time job at a neighbourhood business. He desperately needs the job,, however finding a new one isn’t as easy as it seems until one day an opportunity runs into him. Tagging: @birdsandivory @jojopitcher @lazarustrashpit @yourcoolfriendwithallthecandy (if that’s not your cup of tea dear, let me know I know you have some objections regarding the story :D ) @kairakara101 @akiza-hades-rose
If you feel like supporting this writer consider buying me a coffee: Ko-Fi
Luche walked out of the gym not really sure what to do with himself. He loved his job there and needed the money, but the place was closing down and he had just received his final paycheck. He had to find new job and he had to find it now, but that was easier said than done. He was still in school and preferred to graduate if possible, not that he had any hope for college, that costed money he didn’t have even with scholarships. His mum was going to kill him if he didn’t graduate. But he also needed the money. She needed medication and food had to be put on the table.
“Hey, why the long face?” Nyx appeared as if out of nowhere and pushed him from behind, Luche almost falling down.
“Careful where you walk, asshole.” He grumbled, not being in the mood for any of that.
“Who pissed in your coffee this morning.” Nyx stared walking next to him.
“I just lost the job at the gym.” Luche said very quietly, but his friend heard him.
“What? Why? You were good at that thing. Best receptionist they ever had.” Nyx placed his hand on Luche’s shoulder in an attempt to calm him down, but honestly it didn’t work. He needed work not sympathy.
“They are closing the gym down. They dismissed also all the trainers, cleaners…” he sighed. “They will be selling the equipment on an auction tomorrow. Honestly with all the bigger chains around it is becoming very difficult to stay competitive. I’m stupid, I knew things were going down, but we had customers, I was hoping we could make it.
“Lu, you are one of the smartest guys I know, probably the smartest in our class if not the school. I’m sure you will find something else.” Nyx was his best friend and as such he was there when he needed him, but Luche needed work more than anything right now. “My mum is making dinner tonight, Lib is coming, his dad is nightshift, you should drop by, you can stay for the night if you want.”
“Sure.” The response came a bit automatic without him thinking over it too much. But what was there to think? His mother was in a hospital again, so as soon as he walked home he was going to be all alone in the dark apartment eating leftovers or some microwaved meal.
He never imagined his life going in that direction. When he was a kid he had a normal family, a pretty normal life. His greatest problem usually was forgetting to write his homework or not bringing a book to school. Once he forgot to pay his fine to the library and was charged fifty cents extra. It all went upside down when his father passed away and all the medical issues of his mother started. They have never been rich, but they weren’t poor either. Now things were different. His mother couldn’t work so her only income was social benefits, which was enough to pay for their rent and food, but not for the medical bills and medicine. He had to work and he had been working since he was fourteen. Now he was sixteen and had lost a job for first time, he was sure it wasn’t going to be his last.
As usual Nyx’s mum had prepared the most amazing dinner he had eaten since the last time he was there. Coming to their apartment for meals has always been fun. Nyx and Libertus were his closest friends in school and being at the dinner table with them felt like eating with his two brothers. Not that he had any siblings, but these two were the closest to siblings he would ever have.
“Luche, is it true that your math teacher recommended you for scholarship for a college?” Nyx’s mum asked as she served the last plate on the table and sat with them.
“Ah…” he wasn’t sure how to respond to that. It was true just.
“Absolutely!” Selena, Nyx’s sister responded instead of him. “He was singing Lu’s prizes to the headmaster right before he walked into our class. He used words like exceptional and talented.”
“He was probably talking about someone else.” Libertus said and laughed. “Nothing exceptional about Lu here beside his cheekbones.” Nyx smacked his friend at the back which made him say a loud ‘ouch’ but didn’t stop him from eating.
“That’s a great opportunity!” Nyx’s man continued making Luche feel even more uncomfortable. “I mean with good math grades you can go to MIT, or wherever you want. All the math and computer sciences are in demand right now. You would probably have job offers before you even graduate.”
“You can adopt him, you know.” Nyx pretend that he was annoyed at his mother’s words, but Luche knew better. He turned toward his friend and nodded at him in gratitude. “You are just all over him because he is smarter than me.” Nyx continued dragging the attention to himself, rather than allowing Luche to feel even more uncomfortable.
“I didn’t say you are not smart my dear.” His mum smiled calmly. “But I do recall speaking with your science teacher about three outstanding homeworks that you haven’t submitted yet.”
“I will write them eventually.” Nyx mumbled and dug into his plate.
Next day was Saturday, Luche spent most of his morning looking for work in the neighborhood, but with no luck. Their neighborhood wasn’t exactly wealthy. It was small tightknit community where everyone knew everyone, family businesses were mostly holding their ground against bigger chains but that was coming to an end as he new from first hand experience. Everyone was holding to their jobs as if there were the last straws and he didn’t blame them. Nobody who lived here was exactly rich, most people were passing by and even if the local owners knew him and his family, they didn’t have the resources to hire him. He understood.
His afternoon he decided to give up on his search, he could resume tomorrow. He went to street where Nyx and the others usually hang out and found them kicking a soccer ball around.
“Look who is here!” Libertus greeting him and shook his hand.
“The next Einstein.” Pelna laughed and Luche sighed loudly reminding himself that one day he will have to beat Libertus and his big mouth.
“You still mopping over that girl from the grocery store?” Luche bit back and Pelna suddenly looked as if someone slapped him.
“He has progress today.” Nyx wrapped his arm around Pelna and pretended to strangle him. “He looked at her today and she looked at him back. For three seconds.”
“She is totally into him.” Libertus laughed. “In fact, she is so into him that she couldn’t look at him for more than three seconds.”
They all laughed, Luche including, but Pelna wasn’t very happy that they were making fun of him.
“Hey, Lu!” Nyx shouted and kicked the ball toward him but before he could realize the ball was already passing him and hit a nearby car. Expensive car. The type of car that you don’t even walk next to in case some invisible dust from your coat falls on it and ruins it.
“Fuck.” Nyx froze on his spot, his eyes following the ball that by some weird physical law managed to go under the car.
Luche was the closest so he walked towards the car looking around and making sure nobody saw them. He went close to the car and knelt, seeing the ball right around the middle. He was going to kill Nyx for that. He lied down and reached under the car, grabbing the ball when something or more like someone grabbed his jeans and pulled him up.
“What are you doing, kid?” A big man with expensive suit was folding him and dragged him away from the car forcing him on his feet.
“Just grabbing our ball, sir.” Luche tried to sound as serious as he can, but truth was he was intimidated. The man was taller than him, obviously stronger.
“What’s going on, Titus.” A second man walking from the nearby building and looked at the two of them. Luche wanted to turn around and look for his friends but the man that was holding him was blocking his view.
“Found that kid under the car, mister Amiticia.” The man answered with obvious respect in his voice. Was he a driver? He certainly didn’t look like a driver unless that other man wanted a bear for a driver.
“I was just grabbing our ball!” Luche protested showing the ball to the man.
“What’s your name, kid?” the man asked him.
“Luche Lazarus.” He said a bit unsure. Was he in trouble?
“Lazarus…” the man repeated. “I think I know your father. You study down the road in the high school I assume?” Luche didn’t respond just nodded. “Yeah, your father was on the soccer team. Tell him Clarus Amiticia is sending him his regards.”
“My father passed away three years ago.” Luche looked down as he answered.
“I’m sorry to hear that, kid. He was a good an honest man.” The man reached in his pocket and only then Luche noticed the gun that was tucked in his trousers. “Here.” He gave him a business a card and Luche took it. It had the man’s name, a phone number and an address that was few blocks down the street. “If you need anything, give me a call or stop by at the restaurant.”
Luche watched the two men leave in the car and then slowly turned toward his friends. They were all staring at him as if he had grown a second pair of legs.
“What?” he asked annoyed kicking the ball toward Libertus and putting the business card in his pocket.
“That was Clarus Amiticia.” Pelna whispered as if saying the name will summon the man back. Since Luche apparently didn’t react in any way he continued. “You know how some time ago that neighbourhood was honestly absolutely trash. Like even before our parents were born probably. There was a gang around that slowly put things under control. Their control. Fast forward a bit the son of the gang members is Regis Lucis Caelum, his right-hand man is Clarus Amiticia. They are not a gang anymore of course, haven’t been in some time. Still there are rumors about how they exactly make money.”
“Pfff, Pelna saw someone with fancy car and there must be something dodgy about them.” Nyx laughed. “Pelna, some people who are from here actually manage to succeed. I’m going to be one of them.”
Luche ignored them and looked back towards the car that was long gone by now.

WHY I'M SMARTER THAN FOUNDERS
We are still very suspect of this idea but will take a meeting as you suggest. Working for a small one, and actually did.1 Understanding growth is what starting a startup: growth makes the successful companies so valuable that all the time, I would have laughed at him. You can't make a mouse by scaling down an elephant.2 Fundamentally the same thing. The culmination of my career as a writer of press releases was one celebrating his graduation, illustrated with a drawing I did of him during a meeting. Other kids' opinions become their definition of right, not just because they so often don't, but because you shouldn't have a fixed amount of deal flow, by encouraging hackers who would have gotten jobs to start their own startups instead. I wanted to start a startup.
Nerds don't realize this.3 We're default dead, but we're not fucking.4 If the founders aren't sure what to focus on your least expensive plan.5 They don't consciously dress to be popular. As jobs become more specialized—more articulated—as they develop, and startups have lots of meetings but isn't progressing toward making you an offer, you automatically focus less on them. One founder said this should be your approach to all programming, not just startups, and in particular that the environment in big companies is toxic to programmers.6 Its length and slope determine how big the company will be a flop and you're wasting your time although they probably won't say this directly. And conditions in our niche are really quite different. When Steve and Alexis auctioned off their old laptops for charity, I bought them for the Y Combinator museum.7 The world seemed cruel and boring, and I'm not sure which was worse. If there are any laws regulating businesses, you can start as soon as the first one is ready to buy.
So the randomness of any one investor's behavior can really affect you. He said he has learned much more in his own image; they're just one species among many, descended not merely from apes, but from microorganisms. When the values of the elite in this country is a policy that would cost practically nothing. When your fundraising options run out, they usually run out in the same area, they had a different goal. I think it needs even more emphasizing.8 It is enormously fun to be at least $50 million. And popularity is not a new idea. One's first thought when looking at them all is to ask if there's a super-pattern, a pattern to the patterns. You should always talk to investors your m.
If you judge by the median rather than the average. And indeed, the growth in the first place. During Y Combinator we get an increasing number of companies that have already raised amounts in the hundreds of thousands. It took me surprisingly long to realize how distracting the Internet had become, because the VCs need them more than they originally intended.9 As you go into a startup, things seem great one moment and hopeless the next. You have to seem confident, and you need to be hackers to do what we do.10 That means closing this investor is the first priority, and you get what you deserve. We do a lot of implications and edge cases. Like any war, it's damaging even to the winners.
If you're designing a chair, that's what you're designing for, and there's no way around it. The reason is that good design requires that one person think of everything.11 That's the key. Why? When I have to say, not at all, because if I'd explained things well enough, nothing should have surprised them. Don't keep sucking on the straw if you're just getting air. Raising $20,000 from a first-time angel investor can be as much work as raising $2 million from a VC fund.
In the US things are more haphazard. Whatever the story is in the form of dividends.12 It's harder to judge startups than most other things, because great startup ideas tend to seem wrong. Tell them that valuation is not even the protagonists: we're just the latest model vehicle our genes have constructed to travel around in. If normal food is so bad for us, why is it so common? The most intriguing thing about this theory, if it's right, is that it has started to be driven mostly by people's identities. This essay is derived from a talk at the 2009 Startup School. Viaweb we were forced to operate like a consulting company you might be able to make himself one. Reward is always proportionate to risk, and very early stage startups and then ruthlessly culling them at the same rate.13 A country that wants startups will probably also have to reproduce whatever makes these clusters form. There are now a few VC firms outside the US, because they don't want random startups pestering them with business plans.14
We had 2 T1s 3 Mb/sec coming into our offices. That difference is why there's a separate word for startups, and why, if they have some other advantage like extraordinary growth numbers or exceptionally formidable founders. And yet, making what works for the user doesn't mean simply making what the user tells you to. But I also mean startups are different by nature, in the sense that all you have to be a police state, and although present rulers seem enlightened compared to the last, even enlightened despotism can probably only get you part way toward being a great economic power. This varies from field to field in the arts could tell you that you might want different mediums for the two situations. Great universities? What weaknesses could you exploit? My stock gradually rose during high school. Which almost always means hiring too many people. It's so important to launch fast is not so bad, the kids adopt an attitude of waiting for college. Some investors will let you email them a business plan, but you weren't held to it; you could work out all the details, and even make major changes, as you finished the painting.
Three months later they're transformed: they have so much more confidence that they seem as if they've grown several inches taller. You can measure how demoralizing it is by the number of new customers, but it wasn't designed for fun, and mostly it wasn't. So when someone commits, get the money you need, so you can say you've already raised some from well-known investors. And this started to happen more and more desirable things. Startups are marginal. You probably didn't have a precise amount in mind; you just want to make it a much more common one. This is especially true for a service that other companies can use, because it requires their developers to do work.15 How can they get off that trajectory? All the scares induced by seeing a new competitor pop up are forgotten weeks later.16
Notes
One source of difficulty here is defined from the end of World War II had become so common that their system can't be hacked, measure the difference between good and bad outcomes have origins in words about luck. This would add a further level of links.
Robert Morris points out that this filter runs on.
From the beginning even they don't want to create a web-based applications greatly to be able to buy stock, the last place in the ordinary variety that anyone wants.
Watt didn't invent the spreadsheet. I bailed because I realized that without the methodological implications. How much better, because to translate this program into C they literally had to for some reason, rather technical sense of getting rich from controlling monopolies, just that if you pack investor meetings as closely as you raise them. When investors ask you to raise more, and mostly in Perl, and power were concentrated in the last they ever need.
The unintended consequence is that the worm might have to do it is still what seemed to someone still implicitly operating on the aspect they see of piracy, which people used to wonder if they stopped causing so much on luck. You owe them such updates on your thesis. If you're the sort of community. There are some whose definition of property is driven mostly by hackers.
The person who wins. One professor friend says that 15-20% of the movie Dawn of the next downtick it will seem dumb in 100 years, it could be adjacent.
I assume we still do things that don't include the prices of new stock. Though in fact they don't know whether this happens it will become as big a cause as it might be a special name for these topics.
But there's a continuum here. Eric Horvitz. The air traffic control system works because planes would crash otherwise.
There is of course there is at fault, since they're an existing investor, than a huge loophole.
They say to the decline in families eating together was due to fixing old bugs, and the reaction of an investor who says he's interested in you, however, you can't dictate the problem is not just that if you have to go out running or sit home and watch TV, music, phone, and that injustice is what you care about may not have gotten where they all sit waiting for the linguist and presumably teacher Daphnis, but hardly any type I. I now have on the group's accumulated knowledge.
But the result is that you'll expend a lot of investors. How many times larger than the don't-be startup founders tend to be a hot startup. But the result is that there are few things worse than Japanese car companies, summer jobs are the only companies smart enough to do wrong and hard to make you feel that you're not even allowed to ask for more than that.
There were a variety called Red Delicious that had other meanings.
Nor do we push founders to have to rely on social ones. Ed. He couldn't even afford a monitor is that the usual way of doing that even this can give an inaccurate picture.
At some point, when they talk about the details.
You could feel like a little worm of its own.
But if you like doing. As Jeremy Siegel points out, First Round excluded their most successful founders still get rich, people who had made Lotus into the subject of wealth for society. According to the home team, I've become a genuine addict. The same goes for companies that an eminent designer is any better than Jessica.
Thanks to several anonymous CS professors, Robert Morris, Jessica Livingston, and Alex Lewin for reading a previous draft.

Emergency food supplies!
This is a topic people ask me about all the time, and I really don’t know much about it and our own supplies are… a work in progress. I’m going to outline the main categories of food supplies as I see them, and I welcome any comments or ideas.
Remember, these supplies are going to be for hunkering down. You should have food (or allegedly edible food substitute) in your 3-day go-kit. If the situation is that you can stay in your house (or camping on your property) I’d recommend not using that food right away, in case the situation changes and you need to evacuate. I like to think of my go-kit as a totally separate set of supplies that I could use if I need to, but hopefully will only tap into for a real grab-and-go situation.
In the hundreds of conversations I’ve had on emergency preparedness, there seem to be two main schools of thoughts for those who are prepared.
1) I want to be as comfortable as possible after an earthquake and therefore will plan my supplies accordingly. [These people have their favorite foods in their emergency supplies.]
2) I’ll be so grateful to be alive, I won’t care if I’m uncomfortable as long as I have something, anything to eat. [These people have some combination of astronaut food and their least favorite canned vegetables from the back of the pantry.]
Neither of these viewpoints is right or wrong. I certainly know which house I’d like to be in after a disaster, but I’m also very aware that the other is way easier to plan for. Personally, I’m starting with 2 and trying to work my way to 1- with all categories of emergency planning- but it’s a long process. That’s okay. Having something prepared is always better than nothing.
How much food should you have? This is a really loaded question with a lot of answers. I’d go back to the water post for the full explanation. Make sure you have a minimum of 3 days for each member of the family. More is better. In our house, we’re shooting for somewhere between two weeks and one month, with enough water for a similar amount of time.
In my mind, there are three types of planning for emergency food supplies.
1) Food you already have in your home
2) Prepackaged emergency foods
3) Regular foods you’re able to prepare, and have stored with your other supplies
Each has their +/-, and each has different requirements in terms of replacement schedule, fuel, and water. Come with me, and allow me to display my ignorance about cooking food…
Food you already have in your home
Pros: foods you actually like to eat (that’s why you have them in your house); doesn’t require any additional supplies; everybody loves a block party bbq.
Cons: May not actually exist; regular cooking methods probably won’t be available; may take some creativity to cook up what you’ve got.
DO NOT CONSIDER THIS TO BE SUFFICIENT FOR YOUR EMERGENCY SUPPLIES. It’s likely to be your most delicious option after an earthquake- if you can get to it. If your house has collapsed, or if it takes you days to get back to your home, you’re unlikely to be able to raid the fridge or the freezer. We’ve got a chest freezer full of meat and homemade goodies like pasta sauce and jams and syrups. That freezer is in our basement, so accessing that food is a serious best-case scenario. I hope we’ll have it but I’m not counting on it when it comes to making sure we’ve got enough food to survive a few weeks.
Even if the power’s out, your fridge and freezer will keep food cold for some time. The USDA says the fridge should be cold for 4 hours and a full freezer for 48 hours, if the doors are kept closed. If you get back inside your house and the fridge is on its side with the door open, proceed with caution. Keep the doors of the fridge and freezer closed as much as possible, and use your foods strategically:
1) Eat through the fridge first, prioritizing things that will spoil fastest
2) The freezer should be the second priority since things there will take longer to spoil than the fridge
3) Canned goods and other non-perishables can be moved into the rest of your emergency supplies
4) If you have more than you can eat before it spoils, it’s community building time. Go check on your neighbors and share that quart of milk.
How long is food good for if it’s not refrigerated? Obviously there’s no one answer to that. Trust me, throw out the chèvre, but the cheddar will be good for ages. I’m not a food expert, so I’m going to recommend this helpful chart from the government (you could print it out and stick it inside your fridge, since we do have power outages from time to time). Even without monitoring with a thermometer, it should provide some good guidelines. As always, if in doubt, throw it out. If it’s fuzzy and it doesn’t bark or meow, throw it out. You get the idea.
Remember that even if you can get into your house (either to gather supplies or to stay), we’re going to be a long time without electricity, gas, and running water. That means you’re probably not going to cook things on your stovetop, oven, or microwave. You’re going to need alternative methods of cooking your food.
The BBQ/grill is a good option that lots of people already have on hand. We’ve got a charcoal grill and we try to keep an extra bag of fuel for it. If you’re a gas grilling family (seriously what’s the point you could just cook it inside for the same flavor but whatever), you should think about keeping extra tanks around so you could use it as your primary cooking tool. If you’re super fancy and have your gas grill hooked up to your gas line, make sure you know how to disconnect it and have full tanks on hand- the gas lines are going to be turned off in favor of not blowing up the neighborhood.
One of the great things about emergency planning in Portland is how many people already have camping gear. Your camp stove and pans probably won’t be optimal to cook the rack of lamb sitting in your freezer, but lots of things in your house can be made edible by heating up or with boiling water. You’ll also need this ability for the rest of the food discussed in this post (except the MREs). The amount of fuel you’re going to need will depend on the kind of stove you have. Err on the side of caution.
Some people have a fire pit in their backyard and lots of wood. That’s rad, but outside of hotdogs and marshmallows I know nothing about cooking over fire so you decide how useful that is for you.
If you’ve got a freezer full of HotPockets, I have no idea how you’re going to cook those. Most pre-made food is safe to eat without cooking (but disgusting). Also, if all you have in your freezer is HotPockets and you’re not in college, it might be time to reevaluate some of your life choices.
Prepackaged Emergency Foods
Pros: Very easy to know how much you need; don’t require much other than hot water to prepare; most good for 20 – 25 years
Cons: Can be the most expensive option; foods are often high in salt/sugar/preservatives; I’m not sure I’m interested in 30 servings of “Vegetarian chicken-flavored vegetable stew” but it sure beats starving to death.
Pre-packaged emergency foods are going to be far and away the easiest way to make sure you’ve got enough food post-disaster. Most are good for 20-25 years and don’t require in the way of preparation. Here are the most common ones I’ve come across.
The Bucket. Several people have told me they’ve bought the “Costco Bucket”, which seems to be along the lines of this or this (definitely watch the video- a jazzy little number that made me feel pretty cheerful about impending doom and optimistic about the power of garnish to give rehydrated food 3 Michelin stars). Lots of websites and companies sell them, so don’t despair if you’re without a Costco Card. The “bucket” is generally a one-month supply of food for one person. I’ve never taste-tested any of the brands (and they are legion) but I imagine they’re all pretty similar. They all require water, some are eat-from-the-pouch and some require cooking utensils, so make sure you know what you’ll need.
MRE. Meal, Ready-to-Eat (MRE) is a popular option, since you have a lot more selection and can do more mix-and-match for your own personal preference than with the bucket. Lots of MREs come with heating elements, so they don’t require a camp stove and additional water. They are extremely calorie dense (probably a pro after a disaster. It’s not going to be the time to worry about your diet). No water is required (except for drinking, most are pretty salty) and they’re designed to be eaten straight from the package. They’re pricier than other options, but also have more selection for those with dietary restrictions. Contrary to Ted Cruz’s best efforts, gluten-free MREs do exist.
Freeze-Dried Food. These are pretty common for camping so most people are at least passingly familiar with them. All require water. There are a lot of options for flavors, dietary restrictions, cook-in-pouch, etc. Like the MREs, it can get pricey to think about a few weeks of these for each member of the family. I don’t have an opinion on this, but lots of websites say that the freeze-dried food tastes much better than MREs (I think part of this might just be about being able to get something similar to your favorite foods in freeze-dried form, or how good anything tastes after backpacking all day).
Stockpiling Normal Food
Pros: Cost effective; pack your favorite foods in their actual form (rather than reconstituted); easier to get quality nutrition
Cons: Shorter shelf life; harder to plan for; takes up more space
For me, this option is more difficult for planning purposes. I can calculate 1 gallon of water per person per day, but what 14 days worth of food for two people looks like is beyond me. How many cans of tuna is that? Also, I don’t know how to cook anything even when I’m in my own well stocked kitchen. If Justin dies in the earthquake, anyone who is willing to cook for me can come over and eat his share (sorry Justin).
On the plus side, you don’t have to do any special shopping trips or visit any weird survivalist websites for this kind of prep. Most people I know who have good food supplies of this sort just buy an extra can or two of whatever each time they’re at the grocery store. It doesn’t take long to get a good stockpile, especially if you’ve got some prepackaged emergency foods you’re going to be supplementing with this real food. Some people think of it in terms of meals (we’ll eat X and Y together and we’ve got comparable amounts of each) and some people are just going to get creative with the mix of stuff they’ve got (peanut butter and dried apricots could be the next big thing, who knows).
Obviously lots of your favorite foods are not going to be suitable for your supplies- it’s limited to non-perishables. I prefer frozen vegetables to canned (and hopefully I’ll be eating them from the freezer for a few days, see above) but canned is better than scurvy. Unfortunately, even “non-perishables” have shelf lives that are shorter than I thought before I started researching this article. Here are some good websites with food suggestions:
This is a good chart for how long different types of food will last, from the CDC
As always, Ready.gov has decent, if basic, information
Nothing from the magazine RealSimple is ever actually simple, but this is a good list
I don’t intend to get too hung up on expiration dates for the food, but we will try to go through our kit twice a year (that sounds doable, right?). Here’s what a chunk of my Google calendar looks like for October:
[Look at all that free time! Let’s make plans to hang out.]
I’m also trying to remember to write on items when they were purchased to simplify the process when we do sort the kit. This system is a serious work-in-progress. Am I worried about forgetting to sort through the kit and eating those black beans in 2 years? Not really. Most food of this sort will be edible, if not palatable, long past its expiration date. An obvious exception is any container that’s swollen and looks abnormal (cans or bags of food), since that’s a clear sign of Bad News. The USDA has a pretty good practical guide on this. In general, having food is a necessity; sorting through it on a regular basis is more of an aspiration than a reality for me. Like everyone else, I’m just doing my best here.
Should you home-can your own vegetables and such? That’s awesome but not for me. Remember that glass breaks in earthquakes and pack your supplies accordingly.
Don’t forget the can opener. You’ve got one or two in your house, but just make sure there’s one that lives with your emergency supplies. It’ll make life simpler, and if you’re the only one on your block who remembered, you’ll be a goddamn hero.
Where are you going to store your supplies? Exactly what I said in the post about water:
1) Don’t store your supplies in the basement.
2) Don’t store your supplies in a room that’s over the basement.
3) Outside lockable storage (like a shed) is the best option. That’s not possible for a lot of people (myself included).
4) If you’ve a room (or garage) that’s not over the basement and not under a second story, that could be your best option. Even if your house collapses you’re likely to be able to dig out your supplies.
What are you going to store your food in? If you’ve got anything other than cans, try for something waterproof that will keep out rats and other foragers. We bought a chest from Storables (also a PNW company if you’re looking to buy local). Having it all in one container will also be helpful if we’re in an evacuation situation where we can take supplies (basically, if we’re able to use our car).
One last thought: There is no better facilitator for building community than food. Talk to your neighbors. See what they have. See what they like. Maybe you’ve got a food bucket but they’ve got that fire pit. If the power’s out for days, we’re not going to be able to eat all those burgers before they go bad. There may never be a better time for a block party potluck than after a disaster! It could be fun! It’ll be more fun if you know your neighbors before the disaster so go introduce yourself.
And, finally, here’s a handy table I made to summarize the information from this website:

I got a job at the local movie theater by Windmill-Hill
The next time you go to a movie theater I challenge you to find gum at the concession stand. As a part-time usher I can tell you that gum is enemy #1 and most, if not all, theaters don’t sell it in-house. Among those is Pintura Theater, aka the only place to catch a movie in all of Windmill Hill. And the only place I could be hired in the span of an hour.
I recently started working at Pintura. The old man running the theater, still called Red even though his hair had long since turned grey, placed a help wanted sign and I just so happened to be a broke college kid. My interview consisted of “Do you do drugs?” to which I responded “Maybe” and bam… I got the job. I was one of the four unfortunate souls Red managed to convince that spending our Friday nights in a decrepit theater was well worth the minimum wage.
My first day I got to meet the rest of my coworkers: Carmen, Joe, and Susan. Carmen worked the concession stand and ticket booth. She liked to hide her signs of middle age in at least four layers of makeup. It had the effect of making her look like a clown extra in one of those creepy circus B-Movies. Joe was a scrawny teen that loved to babble about the most obscure films he could find. He joined the theater in hopes of convincing Red to “bring some culture to Windmill Hill”. Two years later and all he accomplished was a pencil thin mustache with a side of acne. Susan was hired a week before me but had already missed work the last few days. I had a feeling I was taking her job and didn’t see her most of my first day.
As the senior employee, in more ways than one, Carmen showed me the basics of cleaning our three viewing room theater. “This is Viewing Room 1. It’s part of the original theater.” “Original?” I asked, though honestly I wasn’t paid enough to care. She didn’t seem to hear me and explained the finer points of sweeping aisles and scraping off gum. Which was no easy task. Despite the theater not selling it, Viewing Room 1 was rampant with ABC gum. I figured it was because it was the oldest room and didn’t spare it much thought. The other two viewing rooms were newer and cleaner which meant less work for me.
The rest of the tour was as uneventful as the start. Though it wasn’t going to be my main job I was shown how to work the fryers and where the key was to the frozen products. Carmen told me they had to lock up the perishable food at night due to “miscreants” which made me reevaluate her age to the next tier of old. For all I knew her and Red were siblings but I made it a point not to get too close to coworkers. A fact that made Joe all the more obnoxious.
I had a feeling that Joe wasn’t the type that made friends easily. Was it his constant references to old movies? Or the fact he chose to breathe through his mouth more often than not? Either way, he immediately latched onto me while demonstrating how to work the projectors. “Rooms 2 and 3 are digital, and therefore inferior, projectors. Easier to work but at the cost of the film’s integrity, you know? Just push a button and instant entertainment. Oh how our modern ways have eclipsed our sensibilities…” He trailed off, waiting to see if I got the reference, then sighed before continuing. “Any monkey can run the digital projectors but what I’m about to show you next takes some real talent!” Mentally I questioned how much talent could be bought in a town like Windmill Hill. It wasn’t as if my home was void of potential. We were well on our way to having the most missing persons in the country. But being known for that didn’t exactly bring in the money.
Joe’s enthusiasm for the ancient projector in Viewing Room 1 was almost contagious. I say almost because the sheer amount of cobwebs and old discarded gum was enough to make me reconsider following him inside. “Did you know almost every theater has converted to digital projectors? Awful, right?! Just look at this beauty.” I wasn’t sure what was particularly impressive about an old hunk of metal but somehow I knew Joe would clue me in. “Oh! Let me show you it in action. Can’t appreciate all it’s wonder otherwise!” A few levers and a couple switches later the ancient machine sprung to life and started playing the reel on it. Looking through the projection window it was some old timey horror film.
“The Hidden Horror of Factory Five. A classic! We have one of the only remaining copies. I was planning on showing this for this week’s midnight movie.” I apparently looked interested enough for him to explain. “Each week we run an old movie at midnight. Red finally agreed to let me do it a few months ago and it’s been quite a success if I do say so myself! Except for the troublemaker.” Joe pointed to a seat right below the projection box. It took me a moment to realize it the different coloration was due to dozens of gum pieces.
“...gross…” I mumbled as Joe continued. “Right?! Some woman keeps coming for the midnight showing and leaves her gum behind. Filthy animal. Susan tried to get her to leave and that wench put gum in her hair! Poor Susan spent all night trying to get it out. She hasn’t come back to work since…” I shuddered imagining someone putting their chewed gum in my hair and was immediately grateful the barber cut my hair a little on the short side last time. “But hey! Now we get to hang out!” Offering my most sincere “Yeah.” I left to go clock out.
Someone was already at the machine when I arrived, a girl with her hair tucked up into a hat. I figured it was Susan but she ran off before I could introduce myself. As I approached the punch cards I noticed hers was covered in sticky strands of gum. For a place that didn’t sell gum, Pintura sure had a problem with it.
I clocked out before I could be asked to clean it up.
College expenses and dreams of eating something other than ramen led to me taking more hours at Pintura. Susan’s hours, to be exact. It turned out I was the last person who saw her, leading to a lot of questioning and zero answers. But that was the way things were in Windmill Hill and it was better not to dwell on it. Maybe she made the smart decision and left this town to its own ruin. Maybe I was getting a bit dramatic as I scraped off my fiftieth wad of gum.
I wasn’t originally counting. It just got to the point that I needed to keep track of the amount of gum Viewing Room 1 was coated with for scientific purposes. That… and I was bored. Granted I wasn’t bored enough to clean off that “troublemaker’s seat” and knew the day I was asked to I would quit this job. But as luck or lack of proper management would have it, Red never entered Room 1. He just took my word that it was fully cleaned and let me collect my pay. If I were someone of even slightly less morals and more apathetic I would have probably never cleaned in there. Sometimes I wished I cared just a little less.
Then I wouldn’t have had to see her.
The Midnight Movie was genuinely a success and I had to admit I was surprised. I guess there were a lot of people in town that enjoyed old films and stale popcorn. Far be it from me to judge their entertainment standards because it meant extra dollars in my bank account. Just the thought of buying meat that wasn’t in the “special discount” bin kept me patrolling the aisles every fifteen minutes or so.
Other than my employee vest the only thing I was given for this job was a flashlight that may have existed when the “original” theater was built. I’m talking about a huge clunker of a flashlight that ran on those batteries you could kill a man with. Yet despite the size it barely produced enough light to actually illuminate anything. Red told me to use it to check for anyone illegally recording and to mess with anyone using their cellphone. I had more fun with the latter.
With each pass through the theater I had to use the light-challenge flashlight to check each aisle. But whenever I reached the row before the top I paused. The screen wasn’t very bright and what it did reveal always stopped before the back row. It was pitch black there and I should have been content to pretend nobody was there. A foolproof plan...
If I couldn’t hear the chewing.
At the start of the show it was quiet enough that I could ignore it. And I would have if it wasn’t for the fact with each theater check the sound was louder. By my fourth trip I could hear her obnoxiously smacking the gum like a teacher’s worst nightmare. A couple of the moviegoers started to complain and I began to understand why the last few rows were always empty in a packed theater.
“Hey, do you work here?” The tap on my shoulder caused me to jump way more than I would have liked. The woman behind me folded her arms and waited for a response. “Uh, yeah I…” She immediately cut me off and at that point I really should have ignored her. “Someone is chewing like, super loud in the back. Super. Loud. I didn’t pay to listen to that. Can you like, tell them to stop or something?” Before I could respond she was already returning to her seat. I muttered under my breath and began walking back to the lobby when something made me stop. Grimacing I lifted my foot and felt the familiar cling of discarded gum.
That was what set me over the top. Flashlight in hand I stomped up the stairs to the back row, using the slight suction on my shoes to fuel my bravado. I wasn’t a confrontation type of person. Few things were worth the effort of a face-to-face dispute. But I spent the last several hours cleaning this place and the idea of removing another piece of sticky garbage made me erupt. Armed with my ancient beacon I approached the source of the sound. And promptly regretted it.
The woman was there in all her nightmare inducing glory. Tattered rags of once clothing clung to her emaciated frame, covered in what I first thought were spider webs then realized… they were strands of gum. The spider like designs covered her body leading up to hair made of the same sticky substance. I couldn’t tell where the clothing ended and her hair began, the tangled mess seemed to overwhelming for someone so small. Her eyes shined in the dull light, but they were nothing but blank orbs stationed above a mouth of jagged teeth.
I watched, unable to move, as a crooked grin crossed her almost absent pink-stained lips. All the while her chewing didn’t stop, a thick wad of gum being mashed over and over again. Yet somehow through it all I heard her voice, sickly sweet with an accent I couldn’t place. “Want some?” She outstretched a clawed hand covered in gooey string that…
The flashlight fell from my hand and my eyes widened as they traced the start of the gum.
What remained of Susan rested limply against the creature’s legs. The top of her head was caved in and covered in gum. Occasionally her body would twitch, the last semblance of life she held, as more of her gumified insides were greedily dug out by the chewing woman. Bits of pink goo oozed from her ears and nose as the question was repeated.
“Want some?”
The theater’s lights flickered on and the sudden brightness caused me to wince. Opening my eyes the creature and Susan were gone only leaving behind a few rogue strands of gum. Chatter filled the air as the moviegoers started to exit, completely unaware of the monster that shared the last two hours with them. Faintly I could hear the woman who complained earlier cry out in disgust.
“Eeeewwwww! There’s gum in my hair!”

To me, travel is freedom. Freedom to explore the world, freedom to experience all kinds of adventures, freedom to grow spiritually. But unfortunately travel isn’t free. So in order to reach the freedom of travel we need to be able to financially support our dream. And this is where many people set their dream aside and wait for a time when their financial situation allows them to travel more. What they don’t realise is that in order to achieve the financial freedom to travel – we need to set travel as a priority , and from there we can start working towards our dream!
And now you’re probably thinking , who is she to judge what I can and can’t afford? Well, I haven’t had a full-time job since I was 18, and even then I was paid minimum wage. I understand what it’s like living off a student loan, trying to get through exams whilst working 30 hours a week – I’ve been there. I haven’t been financially ‘comfortable’ for as long as I can remember, but I’ve been ticking off my travel bucket-list regardless – and so I haven’t felt like I’m missing out on much!
So for you lot out there with big travel dreams and small incomes, here’s a few ways that you too can travel to all the places you’ve dreamed of travelling to. But before we get to the simple bit, it all starts with your mind set!
Change your mindset
Your biggest setback – Limiting Beliefs
Lets keep this simple – if you don’t believe you can achieve your travel goals, then you won’t. And although that may sound harsh, it’s true. But the good news is, you can change your beliefs. The moment you tell yourself you don’t have time, you could never save up the money, you are too afraid to get on a plane and fly half way across the world to a country you’ve never experienced, is the moment that you’re shutting down the opportunity to overcome these obstacles.
So how about, you start out by writing out a list of all the reasons why you think you can’t go to the places you’d like to. Write it all out, this is important!
Changing your Limiting Beliefs to Enabling Beliefs
Now what you need to do – is beside every limiting belief you just wrote down, write out at least three possible ways that you could overcome this limit!
Here’s an example:
Limiting belief
I could never save up the amount of money I need to travel around Asia for 6 weeks
Enabling belief
If I took on a part-time job alongside studying I could start saving up
If I eat out once a week instead of three times a week I could save X amount of money every week
Maybe it won’t be as expensive as I think it is – if I’m willing to travel on a budget
So go ahead and write out your list, once you’ve put aside all your limiting beliefs you can begin actually working towards your goal!
Travel on a budget
Volunteer
Oh wow, when I think about how many opportunities there are out there to explore the world through volunteering programmes, I literally just wanna pack up my bags and get travelling! There are sooo many different programmes and organizations that you can do this through – just do your research! If you really want to visit a country, don’t mind spending a longer period of time there and are willing to work.. You can do so through volunteering, and this can even involve a small sum of pocket money to spend every month – if you are on a very low budget and willing to work!
I have volunteered in Italy & Bavaria through Workaway , where I had to work up to 5 hours a day, in exchange for boarding and food etc…I sooo recommend doing this, it’s not just a time of real growth and learning, but you get to experience a whole other culture and explore another part of the world this way!
Couch surfing
If you really aren’t willing to splurge out the cash on accommodation, or should I say any cash, and you don’t mind meeting people and being semi-sociable, then couch surfing could save you tons of money! I’ve only been couch surfing once, but it is something I’d do again! It’s a great way to get some insight from a local whilst travelling, and a lot of hosts are happy to show you around the area and keep you company during your stay. And the best part – it’s totally free – like seriously!
Airbnb
So, with this one I do recommend it as an option for slightly cheaper accommodation if you are travelling alone or with another person. One of the perks is that you can find real cool and quirky places to stay that you wouldn’t be able to find on an average accommodation site. BUT, when it really pays off is when you’re travelling with a larger group of people – and split the costs – you can live like a queen for way less than a hotel room would cost you!
Blabla car
Blabla car basically connects people travelling with empty seats to people travelling the same way. It’s free, and an awesome way to meet new people whilst getting to where it is you’re trying to go. You do need to be willing to socialise with a total stranger obviously for the length of your journey – but you just never know who you might meet!
Night transport
If you are big into efficiency and want to make the absolute most of a short time period that you have to travel – I totally recommend using as much night transport as you can! it basically kills two birds with one stone – you have a place to sleep, and you’re on your way to the next location on your itinerary – what more do you want as a traveller?! Rather than paying for accommodation on top of a day trip on say a bus or train, you just pay the price for transport and when you wake up you’ll be at your destination and won’t have wasted any of your day stuck on transportation. Pretty ideal isn’t it?
Study abroad
If you’re really wanting to immerse yourself in a new experience and actually live in another part of the world, and you’re already a student, maybe you should consider studying abroad! Most colleges offer some sort of study abroad programme – some of which may require you to actually take a year out from your course to study abroad – and I guess it’s up to you if it would be beneficial enough to do so! These programmes tend to also reimburse most of the costs of going to where it is you want to go – including health insurance costs, flights, and transportation! I mean , this is kind of a once in a lifetime chance that you absolutely wouldn’t be able to get any other way. If travelling is something you are totally passionate about – grab the opportunity with both hands!?
Working holidays
Maybe you’re budget isn’t leaning towards a full on, laying-on-the-beach-all-day kinda trip, but, have you considered a working holiday? There are so many summer job opportunities all over the world, especially in places with lots tourists. This can include anything from working as a scuba-diver instructor, a bar tender, a hostel worker, a party rep, a ski instructor and the list is pretty much endless! You just need to be willing to look for something and also put the work in. Accommodation is often provided, although it most likely won’t be 5 star, this is also a way you’ll make friends and meet loads of people, and maybe even learn a few new skills!
Hostels
This is something I’d almost always pick over other types of accommodation, regardless of my budget, just because of the hostel vibe and social aspect! Hostels are super fun if you are looking to meet other travellers and love socialising..In most parts of the world they also tend to be super cheap, if you don’t mind sharing a dorm with other people.
Camping
How spontaneous are you? Camping definitely won’t be an option for everybody, but it sure is a cheap way to spend the night. It really depends what type of trip you’re on and your travel location, but if it’s suited to your trip, you should consider camping as an option to cut down on accommodation and food costs big time!
Online Side-hustle
If you’re wanting more freedom to actually travel around more and stretch out your money – perhaps you should start looking at a side-hustle you can do on the go! There are so many different things out there, and in this day and age it’s pretty simple to make money online – if you really want to! Lets say you’re a personal trainer, why not start an online coaching business where you can help people achieve their fitness goals through online contact? Or if you love writing or you’re really passionate about a particular topic, why not start a blog? If you’re artistic, why not try sell some of your art online? (etsy is a great one for this). You may have to put on your thinking cap to come up with an idea that works for you – but don’t limit yourself by thinking it’s not possible!
Visit friends
If you have friends or family in different countries, have you ever thought about visiting them? If you are wanting to travel on your own and go somewhere completely random, then this might not be an option. But if you just want a break and to maybe explore a city you’ve never been to, start thinking about which friends you have that live abroad – and get in touch with them! They’ll most likely be able to provide you with free accommodation for the whole of your stay, and you’ll also have someone to show you all the cool places to see. And of course you get to spend quality time catching up with someone you probably don’t get to see too often!
Once you’ve decided on your travel plan
So once you’ve actually decided where you want to go, how long for and what methods of travel and accommodation you want to use – you gotta make it realistic by planning out a detailed budget!
By doing this – you’re not only making sure your goals are realistic – but you’re actually writing your goal down , in detail – which makes you wayyy more likely to actually achieve it!
Writing out a detailed budget
This involves a lot, a lot of research – and this is the part I get really excited about when planning out a trip! You should start this before you have even decided for definite if this trip is within your budget – cause you might be pleasantly surprised!
To determine your basic budget, I would begin by researching average costs for : Accommodation, eating out, public transport & a return flight for where it is you’d like to go. So if I was planning a trip to Italy, it would look something like this:
Return flight to Rome – $40
Average cost of eating out for breakfast, lunch & dinner in Italy
Breakfast – $4 x 6 = $24
Lunch – $15 x 6 = $90
Dinner – $20 x 6 = $120
Total = $234
Transport in Italy
Train from Rome – Naples = $40
Train from Naples – Sorrento $20
7 hr Amalfi coast bus tour from Sorrento – $35
Bus from Sorrento – Rome – $30
Transport total cost = $125
Average cost of hostels in Italy
$20 per night x 6 = $120
Total necessary expenses of 1 week trip = $519
+ $80 for sightseeing + souvenirs
= $600
At this point I know the average expense I would have if I went to Italy for a week, and from here I can decide whether I’d like to cut down costs (I could decide on couch surfing 1 or 2 nights, or having free breakfast in the hostel 3 of the days, for example) and then recalculate my costs. If I have a little extra cash to play with, I could include spending on souvenirs and sightseeing etc. It’s really up to you how you want to prioritise your budget!
And at this point I would calculate how many weeks I have until my trip, and from there calculate how much money I would need to save per week to reach my goal of (in this case) $600.
For example, if I have 12 weeks to save up for my trip, I would need to save $50 a week!
Now, by meeting your goal of saving $50 a week, you know that you are guaranteed to reach your goal of travelling to Italy in 6 weeks. You just need to consciously work towards it every single week, and be conscious of what you’re spending your money on. I promise, once you realise your goal is achievable, saving the money will become so much easier!
How to Travel on a Low Income To me, travel is freedom. Freedom to explore the world, freedom to experience all kinds of adventures, freedom to…

When Nick Sengstaken arrived at the University of North Carolina a few years ago to start his college career, he wasn’t thinking too much about finances. But money was soon on his mind. “When I came on campus I was a naive first-year who went to the student store, bought a bunch of textbooks and then had a massive bill,” said Sengstaken, who is now finishing up his junior year.
And throughout his college career, he’s been dogged by the high cost of textbooks. Sengstaken was the campaign coordinator at UNC for the college affordability campaign run by U.S. PIRG, a consumer advocacy organization, and has always kept a close eye on student costs.
With the merger of McGraw-Hill and Cengage, two major textbook publishers, experts worry that these college materials will only get pricier.
For instance, he needed a textbook, CDs and other products for music major course he was taking. That cost him roughly $500. Sengstaken also remembers paying for codes to access digital course materials in other classes that cost him nearly $300.
Now experts worry the challenges students face in order to pay for course materials are about to get worse. McGraw-Hill and Cengage CNGO, +0.00% two major textbook publishers, announced Wednesday that they would merge, creating the second-largest supplier of textbooks and higher-education materials. Right now, five companies control about 80% of the textbook market and, if the merger is approved by regulators, that number could go down to four.
“The textbook market is already highly concentrated and this just takes it and puts it into fewer hands,” said Nicole Allen, the director of Open Education at the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC), which advocates for more open sharing of educational materials. “Students are already captive consumers in this and this would just make it worse.”
Textbook costs have skyrocketed over the past several years — the average price increased 88% between 2006 and 2016, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics — and some have worried that the relatively high concentration of the market, is partly to blame for those price increases. (Another major factor is that the consumers of the textbooks, students, don’t get any choice in what they need to buy).
Those costs have taken a toll on students. Students spend roughly $3 billion or about 3% of their $120 billion financial aid a year on textbooks, according to a 2016 PIRG report. The lion’s share of financial aid is spent on housing, food and tuition. About 65% of students said they skipped buying a textbook because it was too expensive, PIRG found in 2014.
Economics 101 might suggest that fewer players in a market means textbook costs will rise. However, Joe Esposito, a management consultant specializing in publishing and education technology, said it’s possible — at least in the short-term — that the merger will help lower the cost of course materials.
That’s because Cengage currently offers a service, called Cengage Unlimited, where students buy a subscription and get access to the company’s entire catalog for the period of the subscription, instead of paying for individual titles for each course. (It costs $120 for four months, $180 for one year or $240 for two years.) The company estimates the program has saved students more than $60 million during the 2018-2019 academic year.
‘The textbook market is already highly concentrated and this just takes it and puts it into fewer hands. Students are already captive consumers in this and this would just make it worse.’—Nicole Allen, the director of Open Education at the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition
Currently, students likely still have to purchase textbooks from another company on top of their Cengage Unlimited subscription, because the catalog is still relatively limited Esposito said. The merger will give the new combined company 44,000 titles, which could make the subscription more valuable to students and put pressure on other publishers to lower their prices to compete.
Nana Banerjee, the chief executive officer of McGraw-Hill, echoed those sentiments, saying that the merger will bring economies of scale, and offer students access to a wider selection of titles and a better overall technological experience at a lower price.
“We just don’t have the scale to be able to deliver on some of those problems of affordability,” as individual companies, Banerjee said. “This is a very serious merger based on the mission of affordability. That mission of affordability is enabled through the scale of technology.”
In addition, Banerjee said the combined company will probably have a market share in the low- to mid-teens, which won’t be enough to “start dictating a market trend.” The merger is subject to approval by regulators.
Consumer advocates are skeptical the deal will benefit students
Still, stakeholders are skeptical that the merger will benefit students. Esposito said he expects that as one or two players in the industry gobble up more market share, “you’re going to see incremental price increases.”
The textbook industry has struggled over the past several years, in part because students face challenges affording the materials. “Textbook publishers priced themselves out of their own market and now are scrambling to transition,” Allen, of SPARC, said.
The way the sector has responded to those trends, makes Kaitlyn Vitez, director of PIRG’s make Higher Education Affordable Campaign, wary of any claims that the new combined company will decrease costs for students.
In some cases, professors and publishers have required students to buy a code that they use to access homework or other course requirements. Unlike a textbook, these typically can’t be bought used, rented or re-sold.
‘The move by these publishers in order to continue operating in the space is to cut prices a little bit and to force students to buy materials.’—Kaitlyn Vitez, director of U.S. PIRG’s Make Higher Education Affordable Campaign
In addition, over the past several years, companies, including McGraw-Hill, have struck deals with colleges called “inclusive access programs,” which allow students access to digital materials that are significantly cheaper than the price of traditional textbooks, but where students are often directly billed for the materials through the schools.
The companies and the schools are required by law to give students time to opt-out of purchasing the materials. But critics worry that in some cases the window for opting out may be too narrow for students to make an informed decision. They also worry that in some cases the pricing of these arrangements isn’t clear enough for students to evaluate whether they might save by renting or buying used materials instead.
In fact, it makes sense for publishers to discount costs through these programs. They know that students are much more likely to opt into the programs than they would be to buy a new textbook the traditional way, Esposito said.
“Instead of going to a secondary market or buying the secondary materials at all, let’s bring down the cost to what you’re willing to pay,” Banerjee, the McGraw-Hill CEO, said. The company estimates that its inclusive access program saved students $55 million in 2018.
Some professors are increasingly embracing free materials
Tonja Conerly, a sociology professor at San Jacinto College, a community college system in the Houston area, said she appreciates these programs from publishers because they give her students access to course materials on day one of her class at a lower cost than physical textbook. But they’re second to what she prefers requiring on her syllabus — free materials.
‘Not having the cost of the textbook is just astronomical for them, it’s just a huge benefit for them.’– Tonja Conerly, sociology professor at San Jacinto College
Conerly has been using OpenStax, a Rice University-based database of open licensed textbooks, which allows students to access them for free in digital formats. As textbook costs have increased over the past several years, educators and some members of Congress have responded by pushing to expand the use of these types of materials known as Open Educational Resources.
By using OpenStax, the price of a textbook is one less thing her students have to worry about, Conerly said. It can be a particularly big burden for the demographic of student she works with, who are often first-generation students working to afford school and to live.
“Not having the cost of the textbook is just astronomical for them, it’s just a huge benefit for them,” Conerly said.
Conerly can use free resources for her introductory courses, but the OpenStax database isn’t yet large enough to include what she needs for her upper-level classes, she said. It’s those cases where OpexStax isn’t available that she’s using the inclusive access programs offered by publishers. “I’m just trying to get them the best deal that I can,” she said.
“I’ve been teaching for over 15 years now and I’ve always been bothered with the cost of a textbook,” Conerly said, adding that students shouldn’t have to choose between eating and buying a book. “We’ve been talking about textbooks being expensive for so long. [The industry] doesn’t have a choice but to listen now because people have options.”

My car was wrecked and the insurance company paid to have it fixed. Now they have found something they missed?
After paying out around 12,000 to fix my car (body damage only, but new car so everything came from factory) we found out there is something else that needs to be fixed and because the car is so new and they don't make parts for it, whole transmission needs to be replaced, even though nothing it actually wrong with it. Now insurance wants to total my car. I have gap coverage and want to know my options if i would like to keep my car and have transmission fixed myself. At first insurance told me they would pay off car, I keep it and get settlement money, then they told me no settlement money, but I would get to keep car with salvage title and it would be paid off, now they are saying they r trying to make sure I can keep it at minimal cost to me . The lien holder says if the insurance pays it off, they (lien holder) will not allow me to keep the car. If the insurance pays for it, isn't it their option to allow me to keep the car or not? What are my options?""
What health insurance can I get as a low income american college student?
Hello, I am a nineteen community college student living in North San Diego, California and I live with my parents. I make less that $1,000 a month working part time and going to school full-time. I get financial aid from my school, but only for the classes, not the books. My father, the only other worker in my family, makes roughly around $32,000 a year. We barely make the rent each month and barely have enough for gas. About when I was sixteen, I was diagnosed with Gallstones and was urged to better my choice of eating. Of course as a Mexican-American, I wasnt about to give up my Carne Asada or burgers so I continued my vices which led to various, and very painful gallstones attacks over the past couple of years. Now I am no longer able to eat anything without feeling sick to my stomach. I was cut out on all junk food and have pinned myself to a grilled/boiled chicken only and greens diet. I don;t eat any red meat and make sure to have fresh made fruit/vegetables smoothies. Yet, for the past four days, Like i said i haven;t been able to pass anything. I am currenly runng every morning. My father thinks I have an ulcer. So, straight to the point, I am a low-income college student with no money left over at the end of each month and I need to go to the doctor's immediately. I am an american citizen but have no health insurance at the moment. I need surgery to remove the gallstones, but first have to go an have a checkup. I was wondering if there was anyway that i can get covered? My mother applied for medi-cal but we havent heard anything in over four months and its a LONG process. Can Anyone please help me!""

Canada Car Insurance?

If anyone has a similar details, please give me your insurance quote...it does not have to be spot on. I got some from websites, but they all seem to be $320+/m which is very high...I only pay 42 ($80ish) in England, which is already very high as I paid R110 (8.50ish) in South Africa. This is for my budget to see what I can expect over there. Thanks""

Big hoo ha over teenaged car insurance?
Might take a while... Basically the people in my year at school are all at an age where were starting to learn to drive, and also talking about getting our own cars (those who can afford it) Some people are going to get their cars, and pretend that their parents are the main drivers just to make the insurance cheaper, however others are saying that insurance companies can actually catch you doing this. It makes sense that they should be able to as it is fraud, i was just wondering though, does anyone know HOW they actually do this? Is it if you make a claim? Or do they actually track where the car is going and from that work out who is driving it? Just thought i would ask to try and clear up this huge grey area, personally i am not planning to get a car as i cannot afford to have insurance with just me on the car and i dont want to screw over my mums insurance forever should we get caught pretending it is hers so do not start having a go at me as if i am going to try and cheat the system. I am literally just wondering how it is done. Thanks.""

Where can I get cheap health insurance in NYC as an individual with a relatively low deductible & low premium?
Is that even possible? My reasoning is this: I am 26 and I am self-employed. I am basically just looking for a bare bones plan that will have the lowest premium possible and I actually care more about emergency care than doctors visits. You see, I don't get sick often and don't plan to go to the doctor a whole lot...I just want something in case of an accident and the whole low premium w/ high deductibles thing won't help me...I'll be stuck with a sky high bill to pay off if I stay in the hospital. I'd rather have emergency coverage and simply pay out of pocket for a doctor if I have to. Is there a plan out there in NY that fits this? Anyone know? HELP! I make too much money to qualify for Healthy NY or another low income program..but not enough to reasonably afford a normal healthcare plan when factoring in rent and student loans. I looked around at different health insurance plans, but could not find one that is affordable to me, and has dental coverage. Over all I am in good health, have not visited a doctor since I was a kid. Last time I went to a doctor for a physical in high school, well I am afraid same goes for dental. I have not seen a dentist since last time I got a filling which was when I was like 14. I need to see a dentist ASAP, not that my teeth hurt, but I can see a cavity on my wisdom tooth. With the new health care reform and all, I am I eligible for any thing in particular? Any new programs or plans?""

G2 Auto Insurance Question!?
Hi, I am currently 16 almost 17 and I just got my G2 license. From the research that i have done I know that I need to have insurance to drive my parents car as a part time driver. I did go to driving school and got the drivers education certificate from CAA. However I am not really sure what to do now because my parents have 2 cars and my grandmother and grandfather have 1 car. I intend to use all 3 cars at different times because my whole family is very busy but i believe that my grandparents have separate insurance. I was wondering if I am going to have to pay to be a part time driver for all 3 cars or how does it work. Either way my dad is going to call the insurance company. Also if I do have to pay what do you think the price would be like and do you have any tip on how to maybe reduce cost?""

How much will two speeding tickets increase my insurance?
I got a speeding ticket last year around the same time for 15 mph over and just received another (in a different state) for going 18 mph over. Also, I have another ticket from 3 years ago (will be 3 years in a couple weeks), so that shouldn't effect my insurance after that. I called my insurance company and asked them how much my insurance would increase with this new ticket. They said $11 over six months, so that equates to less than $2 a month, which is fine, but I'm just not sure how honest they are being with me. The company got me a quote. . After I signed all paperwork and agreed to the deductions, I called the company just to verify all the information. All was said and fine. A week later they call to tell me the premium was significantly increased due to my record. While I understand, can they really tell me one thing first, have me agree and sign, then change it up like that? I had specifically asked if my record was already pulled and all my info was correct and they said yes.""
