April 14, 2023: Spring Poem, Colleen O’Connor
Spring Poem Colleen O’Connor
It’s April again. Which means I’ve lost interest
in months and days and sons. Which isn’t fair. Sons
are born but they are made men, made tangible
by their makers, by their makings. It isn’t their faults.
What is it then that I’ve lost? My interests, flitting from me
in the dark, obnoxious wisps. Which isn’t fair. I’ve lost
interest in days and now the nights are all flitting wisps, bright
as daylight and just as thin, my interest in them waning like some
bored, listless moon. It’s April again. I want to leave it all.
Which isn’t fair. Neither am I. I abandon
my wisps. I leave them to their mothers.

cw: discussion of christian traditions, specifically catholic sacraments
The two hottest topics in second grade are cursive and Communion.
For Will, the first one is pretty boring. He’s already known how to write cursive for a year. His sister, Sarah, exclusively writes in cursive now that she’s in fourth grade. Will has to know it if he wants to communicate with her. But he has to admit, it does make him feel special when Lucy needs his help forming those tricky handwritten Q’s.
Communion is a little more interesting. He’s not thrilled about the suit part, but he is thrilled that he might get to process into Mass with Lucy by his side. Unsurprisingly, though, Lucy has complaints, most of which are far too advanced for the other second graders to fully comprehend. She says it’s silly how she has to wear a white dress and a veil.
“If I wanted to practice getting married, I’d do it at recess like a public school kid,” she says, and everyone else groans. They’re all looking forward to the pretty white dresses, especially Sadie. Whenever they all get together and play at the Doyles’ house, Sadie grabs her white gloves and pretends to be a debutante (a word Will doesn’t understand and, at this point, is too afraid to ask about). Will and the other guys just humor them. All they have to do is show up in the suits their moms picked out a year ago.
Will’s a little more on board with Lucy’s second complaint: The bread isn’t bread enough.
“I heard that in Protestant churches, they give you full pieces of fluffy bread,” she says one day on their way back from Reconciliation. “Here, it’s just a wafer. That’s not as good.”
Will thinks about it for a minute. The wafers don’t look like much. Sarah says they don’t taste like much, either. Like air with a puff of yeast. Will always thought that description was pretty funny, but Mom always makes Sarah apologize for saying it.
“It’s the Lord, Sarah Grace,” Mom always says. “The Lord is more than enough for you to eat. And for crying out loud, we always go to McDonald’s after Mass.”
But Will thinks he knows what Sarah’s on about. He thinks he knows what Lucy’s worried about, too. She’s also worried about the wine.
“I know it’s supposed to be blood, but it’s still going to taste like wine,” she says. “My parents said wine doesn’t taste good. I heard that in Protestant churches, they use grape juice. Grape juice tastes good.”
Will takes notes. Fluffy bread. Grape juice. When he accompanies his mother to the grocery store the following Saturday, he asks for those specific items. To his surprise, Mom agrees with a knowing smile.
“Wanting to practice your First Communion,” she says. “Oh, Will. You’re too sweet.”
He lets her believe that. She’s not wrong, exactly. It’s just less about the practice and more about making Lucy happy.
So, that afternoon, less than a full day before Mass, Will pulls Lucy into his backyard and presents her with the fluffy bread and grape juice.
“I didn’t want you to miss out,” he says. “Your idea seems better, anyway.”
Lucy gives him a look that he won’t forget for the rest of his life. He has no real way of knowing it, but it’s a look he’ll see on her face a lot until the day he dies. For now, he just blinks it in. Beautiful.
“Will,” she says, “you’re too sweet.”
He’s not sure if that’s supposed to be a compliment, but he grins from ear to ear like it is, anyway.

On Flashback Fridays I will share with you the books I was not able to review when they were first released that have been screaming at me from my To-Be-Read bookshelf. Murder at the Blarney Bash (A Beacon Bakeshop Mystery) Cozy Mystery 5th in Series Setting - Michigan Publisher : Kensington Cozies(January 23, 2024) Paperback : 352 pages ISBN-10 : 1496741749 ISBN-13 : 978-1496741745 Kindle ASIN : B0C3WXQNNN Audiobook ASIN B0CRJNB9R7 Follow the aroma of shamrock sugar cookies to the Beacon Bakeshop, a lighthouse on the shores of Lake Michigan where amateur sleuth Lindsey Bakewell is busy preparing for Beacon Harbor’s St. Patrick’s Day festivities – with a little help from her adorable Newfoundland, Wellington, of course! Lindsey is baking up a storm—shamrock sugar cookies, Guinness chocolate cupcakes, Irish soda bread—for the well-timed grand opening of the Irish import gift shop, the Blarney Stone, owned by her boyfriend’s uncle, Finnigan O’Connor, recently relocated from the Emerald Isle. But it’s Uncle Finn himself who seems full of blarney when he gleefully reveals a pot of real gold he claims he stole from an actual leprechaun. And Finn’s fortune takes a turn for the worse when he’s arrested for the bludgeoning of a small unidentified man dressed as a leprechaun—the murder weapon alleged to be his now-missing shillelagh. Eccentric Uncle Finn may enjoy believing he’s outwitted a leprechaun, but he would never be so deluded as to clobber one with his walking stick. Now Lindsey will need more than the luck of the Irish to seize a golden opportunity to catch the real killer . . . Dollycas's Thoughts Beacon Harbor is going all out for St. Patrick's Day. Lindsey Bakewell and her staff are pulling out all the stops filling the shelves at the Beacon Bakeshop but also making Guinness chocolate cupcakes with Bailey's buttercream frosting, shamrock cupcakes and cookies, creme de menthe brownies, and a Bailey's cheesecake for the grand opening of the Irish import gift shop and the Blarney Stone micropub. The new businesses are owned by Finnigan O'Connor, uncle of Lindsey's boyfriend Rory who has moved to town straight from the Emerald Isle. The celebration starts out with the annual grade school Leprechaun Parade with Uncle Finn, his daughter Colleen, and their gorgeous dog Bailey leading the way. Every student marching in the parade receives a free shamrock good luck charm from the Blarney Stone. Uncle Finn is quite the storyteller, most get grander with each telling. The latest is that he stole a pot of gold from a real leprechaun on his way home. Not sure what to believe Rory and Lindsey know there is more to the story. Bad luck comes when a small man dressed like a leprechaun is killed, beaten to death with a shillelagh, that appears to belong to Uncle Finn. He is taken into custody and while he may have tricked the leprechaun out of his gold, he never would have killed him. Lindsey will need all the good luck she can get to bring the killer to justice and free Finn. _____ I am loving this series. In this 5th installment, it's about St Patrick's Day and all things Irish. With an Irish grandfather, I have a wee bit of the Irish in me so this story delighted me. Lindsey and Rory's relationship is growing so naturally. Tuck is a little broken-hearted because Kennedy left town, but she is back and she didn't come alone. The staff at the Beacon Bakeshop are working together like a well-oiled machine and Lindsey knows she can count on them. Her parents leave Beacon Harbor for the colder months and are spending two weeks in Maui, but the local gossip mill works fine. They sometimes find out what's going on before Lindsey. I was happy to see some of Rory's relatives come to town. The introduction of Finn and Colleen gave the character of Rory more depth. All the core characters continue to develop and are always engaging. I was happy to see Kennedy back but she tested my patience a time or two. I am so excited to see Lindsey's Newfoundland, Wellington has a new friend in Finn and Colleen's Great Pyrenees Bailey. This story is so well-plotted and executed. Finding the right connections between the victims and the suspects. Lindsey went above and beyond to follow the clues and find key pieces of evidence to move the investigation forward. Thinking she had it figured out but no, there was another twist. The pressure to move when time was of the essence. The scene witnessed followed the fabulous team takedown with a fantastic assist which was then followed by a funny situation while waiting for the killer to be taken away. This was all perfectly paced and my eyes were glued to the pages. I love the detailed descriptions Ms. Hannah gave throughout the story. Truthfully with the lighthouse having a resident ghost, a leprechaun running around town peeking in windows, and hiding pots of gold was a true possibility. We learn in the acknowledgments that the author's son gave her the inspiration for this story. Like his mother, he must have a keen imagination. It is what makes her stories so much fun to read. Trust me, you will be craving St. Patrick's Day treats. There are 5 tempting recipes following the story. Murder at the Blarney Bash has extraordinary characters taking on a perplexing mystery with a side of leprechaun lore and a bunch of Blarney. I escaped right into the pages and was completely entertained. Next up Murder at the Lemonberry Tea. It has a November 26, 2024 release date. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Thank you to Kensington Cozies and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC. Your Escape Into A Good Book Travel Agent About the author Cozy mystery author, Darci Hannah, is a native of the Midwest and currently lives in a small town in Michigan. Darci is a lifelong lover of the Great Lakes, a natural wonder that inspires many of her stories. ACE AIR: COLLEEN O’CONNOR
vimeo
Program: Ace AIR Location: Ace Hotel New York Date of Stay: 07.23.17 Artist: Colleen O’Connor
During her night at Ace, Colleen O’Connor recorded an interview with Sidney Smith, who had until recently been working remotely as co-director of Kimberly-Klark from Berlin.
In her initial proposal of the idea to Smith, Colleen explained:
“I think that your being involved remotely could actually turn into something quite poignant and having to do with itinerancy, travel, (hotels), (lost in translation), etc. Because I don't really know much about your interests, or your practice, or you. I thought this might not only be a chance to sink into the experience of working remotely, which is so often a primary mode of relation in an internationalized economy and art market, but also just to work on something collaboratively with you.”
Colleen O'Connor is an administrator living and working in New York City. Her work focuses on labor, finance, psychoanalysis, and sound. She is a co-director of Kimberly-Klark in Ridgewood.
This July, our AIR program is curated by the team at Kimberly-Klark, an interdisciplinary project space located in Queens, NY. Founded in 2014, the space aims to help artists and curators realize exhibitions that may be more ambitious or comprehensive than previous endeavors. Their shows have been featured in Artforum (online), ARTNews, and OFluxo, among others. They are open on Sundays from 12-5 and by appointment.

Anastasia: A Projected Journey to the Past
If you want to find out if Grams from Dawson’s Creek kicks the bucket, you should click Keep reading!
I am not one of those people who has had the Anastasia movie playing on a loop in my head since childhood. Perhaps I could never wrap my mind around the whole not-disney but disney-like thing.
Coming into this show, excited by the cast and creative but concerned if it will end up my “taste”, I definitely was ready to have some questions and critiques.
1) The projections, I mean...the PROJECTIONS! At first I thought it came across as cheesy, but once i saw the Romanoffs dancing across the mezzanine walls I was hooked and realized that they really did bring something unique and elevated to this show. I am loving how technology is bringing lighting and set design into a new era
2) Christy and Derek, These two are powerhouses who really were so lovable as the romantic leads. Their chemistry was definitely subtle, but it didnt seem forced which is always nice.
3) Countess Lily is a queen and the Dowager Empress deserves a one woman show. I would literally watch just the two of the sitting at a table drinking tea and chatting for HOURS
4) At the end of the day, this was a solid, show-tuney, musical that doesn’t try to be edgy or evolutionary. I can see die-hard Broadway fans being sated but not overjoyed, but I can see tourists and young girls falling in love with the story, cast, and songs. And sometimes, that’s enough.
PS...She doesnt die..yet

house key
At the end of the night, Lucy blames her hormones for the way she cried at Colleen O’Connor’s kitchen table.
She’s about two months pregnant, and she’s been planning for her casual-not-quite-but-definitely-shotgun-somewhat-religious wedding with Will, scheduled for early November. Her parents have helped with some of it, but no one’s helped more than Will’s mother, Colleen.
Lucy wasn’t really expecting Colleen to be so happy about the whole thing. She was confused and nervous about the baby, but when Will insisted he and Lucy wanted to get married, Colleen was suddenly thrilled. She said it wasn’t like she was losing her only baby boy. It was like she got to plan a party.
And Colleen loves planning parties.
That’s going to be the best thing about having Colleen O’Connor for a mother-in-law, Lucy thinks. Out of all the moms in Lucy and Will’s class, she always threw the best birthday parties. She had the best food, the best games, and picked out the best outfits. Even Will always looked adorable on his birthday.
It’s never just birthday parties with Colleen, either. Last year, she and Pat celebrated a non-milestone anniversary with chicken piccata, lasagne al forno, and mascarpone cheesecake she made all by herself. Apparently, she’d been taking private cooking lessons in the kitchen at Giovanni’s, which the head chef just … gave to her, for free, because he liked her attitude. There’s just something very good about Colleen. Even when she’s nosy, you almost kind of appreciate her for it.
At least, that’s how Lucy feels, as the sixteen-year-old girl about to marry Colleen’s one and only sixteen-year-old son.
Ever since Lucy figured out how she felt about Will, she’s been worried about Colleen’s opinion of her. Intellectually, she’s always known that Colleen is a very kind person, but she knows how mothers can get about their only sons. That kindness could have been gone the minute Lucy was no longer just Will’s friend from next door. From the minute she and Will held hands outside the Our Father, Lucy was convinced Colleen would hate all the things she said she liked about her. She was convinced Colleen would call her names like dirty feminist and aspiring career woman, which to most mothers who look like Colleen, are the scariest things a woman can be.
But that’s not what happened. It’s not what happened, and now, they’re here.
Lucy’s sitting at the kitchen table, looking between her notes about The Picture of Dorian Gray and affordable wedding dresses for pregnant eleventh graders. Colleen comes back into the kitchen, spinning a ring of keys around her index finger.
“This wedding dress thing is too hard,” Lucy says and puts down the magazines. “You’d think I was marrying the fabric more than the man.”
Colleen smiles.
“I’m more than happy to help,” she says. “In the meantime, I got you something.”
Lucy furrows her brow as Colleen removes one key from the ring around her finger. It’s just a small silver key. It doesn’t look like much. But as Lucy runs her fingers up and down its grooves, she knows exactly what it is – exactly what it unlocks. Her face falls, but in the best way it could.
“Colleen,” Lucy says. “Is this a copy of your house key?”
Colleen nods.
“I figured since your folks had to give Will a copy of theirs, it was right to give you a copy of ours,” Colleen says. “You’re the kind of person we want sitting in our kitchen, Lucy.”
Lucy laughs a little.
“What?” she asks. “Short and unassuming?”
“Kind and hard-working,” Colleen says. “Smart, too. The perfect match for Will, no matter how quickly you ended up there.”
Lucy blushes. Before long, the blush turns to tears. Not long after that, her whole face is red again. She can’t tell Colleen why, but she can think about it to herself.
It hasn’t been long since Lucy Callaghan thought no one would ever like her and that no one would ever understand her. Just over ten years ago, she was the perennial misfit – too old to be a child, too young to sit through faculty meetings with Mom and Dad. But now … now Colleen O’Connor is looking her in the eye, and she approves. She doesn’t think Lucy is too weird or wrong or any of those other much words she’s spent too long attributing to herself.
It doesn’t seem like much, but for a brief moment in Lucy’s life, it’s grand.
She runs her fingers up and down the grooves of the key again.
Another home.

so, Passover started Friday. last night was the full moon. today is Easter. which means that the O’Kohen-Wayne-July clan, that consists of an Irish Catholic married to a Pagan (with a basis in Judaism) and a Jew (O’Kohen-Wayne) and an Irish Catholic married to a Jew (O’Connor-July), have had a very interesting weekend. and a separate Pagan and her wife, who is most likely Greek Orthodox, definitely got dragged into all of it. because that’s what happens when you get socially adopted by your best friend and her insane family and your wife’s best friend is part of the other half of said insane family. not that Adeline minds, she loves Cassie and the whole lot of them, it’s just hilarious to think about.
