Finally, the completed zinc clad frame, the making of which we followed all last week. This frame -- designed to hold a color photograph of our staff taken a few years back -- was a gift for departing CEO (now current CFO) Karl Thorndike. The frame's rectangular shape, light metal tone, and smooth texture echo the metal grid of our shop's garage door in the photograph. (3/3) After the joined Hicks frame has dried, the first step in the finishing process is to gesso the frame. Here, gilder Mary Helen O'Brien heats the gesso so it can be sprayed evenly on each side of the frame where gilding will occur. In honor of International Dog Day, an oil on panel by artist Albert York, titled “Brown Dog and Clump of Trees in Landscape” (1985). York was a framer himself, and for a long time worked for framing pioneer Robert Kulicke. This frame was one of several we made to replicate frames the artist had used for his work during his lifetime. The maple frame from our previous post (yesterday), complete with its artwork, a small landscape oil on board by an unknown artist. The frame finish is a hand-applied paint casein, which was chosen by the client. We hinged the painting with Japanese paper and rice starch paste to float behind laminated UV glass, so the sight-edge of the frame just crops the edges of the image.
